Game 150: Orioles at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 17, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Here is the lineup:

YANKEES
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Posada C
Giambi DH
Cano 2B
Mientkiewicz 1B
Hughes RHP (3-3, 4.91)

Pregame chatter: Yanks are facing RHP Daniel Cabrera (9-16, 5.37). …
Check out the blog WFAN’s Sweeny Murti did on his weekend in Boston. For a radio guy, that Murti can write. The benefits of a Penn State education, I guess.

UPDATE, 7:14 p.m.: The Yankees are 1-4 in games following a series against the Red Sox. The Red Sox are 1-4 in those games as well. The Yankees have been outscored 36-29 in those five games, the Red Sox have been outscored 32-29.

That should tell you something about the emotion the teams put into the games each other. Meanwhile, I’m listening to the radio and John and Suzyn seem personally offended that Phil Hughes gave up two runs. “And there’s not an out in the Baltimore lineup!” Sterling said. Well, there must me an out or two someplace. They’re 64-84

I’m giving baseball a break tonight and going for a walk with my iPod then to a movie. Enjoy the game.

Hope we see Bad Daniel today. Ejected in the Boston game, no suspension?

  2. jennifer 27 in 07 September 17th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

He was suspeneded 6 games if I recall.

  3. Ethan Foxx September 17th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Ever wonder how the Yankees get so much young talent? Here’s how they do it, and how the Red Sox counter.

    Okay guys:

Don’t worry, I’ve seen squirrels today!

    Anyway:

*We need to pick a player to rag on!*

Seriously. It worked with Giambi, Matsui and the Mient Man…

  5. Bob from NJ September 17th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

    Very nice.

  6. SJ44 September 17th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

He is appealing a 6 game suspension. That’s why he is available tonight.

Tonight is the night the bats need to come alive again. Except for two 8th innings (Friday and last night), the bats were quiet all last week.

The way you beat the bad teams is to pound them and pound them early.

At this stage of the year, you get an early 4-5 run lead against teams that have nothing to play for, they go quietly into the night.

The Yankees inability to beat the Orioles this season is what’s keeping them out of first place. Time to change the karma and tonight is the perfect time to do it.

  7. mel September 17th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

    Thanks, all.

  8. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

It seems that Damon throw harder in left than in center. Is that an optical illusion or what?

re-sign doug m. for next year. His glove is still great for a late inning defensive replacement. Who knows how Phillips wrist turns out.

I mentioned this a couple days ago and after watching this series I have to mention it again. Lowell at first next year? The guy kills us everytime we play them. He is probably the m.v.p. for boston this year. Besides supposidly being a good clubhouse guy.

  9. Nick September 17th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

Good lineup for tonight. The glove of Mientkiewicz came up big yesterday and he could surprise with a couple of key hits against the O’s.

I’m leaving for the game soon. I’ll say hello to the squirrel!

  12. mel September 17th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

    SOS,

Lowell’s having a great contract year. He’s already said that the Yankees are near the top of his list.

    http://www.bostonherald.com/sp.....id=1031666

And as a bonus, there’s a picture of Papelbon that sort of reminds you of Shill.

  13. Sam September 17th, 2007 at 5:19 pm

Is Farnsworth available.. Has not pitched in 7 starts and the pen seems weak with no Chamberlain?

  14. JCR September 17th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Man I hate Lowell… I can’t stand him and Youkilis, I hope I never see any of those guys on pinstripes…

  15. AD September 17th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Why isn’t Melky playing?? Hurt or benched (day off) because he looks like he’s lunging at every pitch? Let’s hope Matsui gets on a roll after his day off.

  16. nettles September 17th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

    Come on, Franchise!!!

  17. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

    mel,

Thats a great picture of puckerbon, but the bent over schill after the homerun shot yesterday trumps that.

  18. mel September 17th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Lowell’s o.k., but he sure seems stiff over there in Boston. He looks so sad all the time and much older than his 33 years. Maybe he’s still a Yankee at heart because he’s very reserved.

If Alex opts out, Lowell may become a very rich man. Boston might go through the roof to keep the Yankees from snatching him up. That seems to be their m.o. nowadays ala Matsuzaka and Gagne.

If Alex hits the market, will he look to be playing 3B or SS?

And yes to whoever asked, Ellsbury does look like a very young Beltran. As soon as I thought that he looked Hispanic the announcers said he was Navajo. He’ll probably be their Jeter in the future. Scrappy Doo’s (Pedroia) alright but he doesn’t have that aura and he looks so eager.

  19. 2007 Yankees September 17th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

Mike Lowell is a good guy and a damn good ballplayer. That said, picking up somebody from the RS is never a good idea, especially when he is going to want BIG money based on this year’s stats. Let the RS re-sign Lowell for the BIG $$ and hope his stats fall back to where an aging veteran stats are.(see Varitek)

  20. EY September 17th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

LOL if Lowell won’t be third base for us. Because AROD is staying. (unless they move the banged up Jeter away from SS, and Arod back to his old place, then that’s a different thing)

  21. 2007 Yankees September 17th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Melky needs a day off anyway. Hopefully JT tells him he is benched tonight for sliding into first.

  22. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Guys! C’mon! We need to rag on someone! :-D

  23. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

Rebecca – I missed something – what’s the “ragging on someone” thing and how does that mesh with optimism?? :)

  24. Giuseppe Franco September 17th, 2007 at 5:38 pm

Sweeney usually does have something interesting to say — whether you agree with him or not.

He’s a Big Ten rival for me because I graduated from Purdue.

  25. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Sherri: The past few games we’ve done the following:

Against Toronto, we ragged on Giambi pregame, and Giambi had a grand slam.

Next night we ragged on Matsui, and he had a 2 run single.

Last night we ragged on Mient, and his defense saved the game.

  26. mel September 17th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

    Guiseppe,

I thought you graduated from the Hollywood School of Cosmetology?

  27. Jax September 17th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Ethan Foxx they get young talent by drafting better in recent drafts and making wiser international fa signings.

  28. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

    Minky was great last night!
Matsui might still need a little ragging…
Do pitchers count? If we rag on Hughes, maybe he can do a job on the O’s!

  29. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

    Well, I don’t think Hughes needs it…

    Matsui it is!

  30. Big Johnson September 17th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

“Last night we ragged on Mient, and his defense saved the game.”

There were a lot of heroes last night. In my opinion Minky was the MVP of that game. Without his scintillating defense, the game gets out of hand early and Clemens gem becomes rubble, and Chamberlain and Rivera never get into the game.

This is why I have been so adamant about defense. Philips or Minky need to start at first. With Giambi there, we lose one of the biggest games of the year without question. You simply do not sacrifice defense for a big hitter. If you have two equally competent players at first, than sure take the hitter. The Sabremetric nazis will never be able to account for this kind of play in their dizzying maze of statistics.

Hopefully last night was enough to convince Torre of how defense at first is so much more important than anything on offense. Then again Igawa was warming late tied at one.

    BJ

  31. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

    Becca-

Melky and Matsui deserve our ragging the most. Here are their Sept. BA/OBP/SLG:

    Melky .190/.242/.241
    Matsui .125/.308/.200

That is brutal, and Melky’s season line is down to .336/.408/.744. Those numbers would be barely acceptable, IF he played gold golce caliber centerfield defense. And I have seen no evidence in statistical results or by viewing to support the notion that he does. Not to mention, he simply LOOKS terrible lately.

What more can I say about Matsui but that the Yanks simply need him to get in going by the post season.

I fear “ragging” on those two will be lost. So how about this: “What have you done for us lately, ARod”! A weak overall series in Boston and an ugly line of .125/.308/.125 over the past week. With only one RBI and nary an extra base hit since you dominated in KC.

Sure you can hit the weak Central teams, but to become a True Yankee (TM) you need to get it done against the AL East! In September.

  32. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 5:55 pm

    BJ:

The very very very first thing I was ever taught about baseball was courtesy of my older brother: A good defense will ALWAYS beat a good offense.

  33. Skinny Mike September 17th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

I agree. Giambi should never be used as anything but a DH and late game post hitter. That is where is value is at its highest.

  34. Skinny Mike September 17th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

    *pinch hitter*

  35. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

    Micheal T:

Well, A-Rod is WAY WAY WAY overdue to hit one out.

Melky’s slump I think has been overshadowed because of his defensive play, because Matsui and Giambi were slumping and because while Matsui hits behind A-Rod, Melky hits 9th.

As I said before, I don’t like Damon in CF, but Melky needs the day off.

  36. foobar September 17th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

It’s getting tiring seeing that false science “sliding headfirst doesn’t get you there any faster” and intellectually-challenged “otherwise olympic runners would do it” stupidity passed around as truth on every blog. For the nth time, olympic runners don’t do it because…well, sliding on rubberized latex probably will break something, esp with 9 others huge, muscular guys running at over 20mph right behind you. DUH. Nothing to do with getting there faster/slower.

Now if they want to get on Melky for sliding feet first, that’s fine, yes that indeed slows you down

Meanwhile, sliding head first (and executing it well) indeed gets you there faster, at some expense of injury risk.

What Melky did the other night was stupid, not because he slid, but because he slid feet first.

  37. Skinny Mike September 17th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

We do not need Melky to be red hot to win in the postseason, but we do need him to be productive at the plate. Need to get him going again in the next 2 weeks.

  38. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

That seasonline for Mleky is OBP/SLG/OPS

  39. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Minky or Phillips at first – agreed!!!

  41. Mike S. September 17th, 2007 at 6:10 pm

    AD:

Maybe Melky isn’t playing because his average, near .300 not long ago, is now .282. Hopefully a day off helps. With his speed, he really should try a drag bunt sometime….and no sliding into first when he does it!

  42. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 6:13 pm

    This amused me:

    “Boston Red Sox
Coco Crisp: He didn’t really used the “P” word after Friday night’s loss to the Yankees, did he? Even as a negative. He said, “It’s not the time to panic.” It wasn’t the time to drop that word into a conversation.”

    LET’S GO YANKEES!

  43. Tommy September 17th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

Yeah, that is great writing from Murti. Are f’en kidding me. Kiss ass much, Pete?

  44. randy l September 17th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

“What Melky did the other night was stupid, not because he slid, but because he slid feet first.”
i’m saying asking this totally to cause trouble. if running through a base is faster on offense, then why did mientkiewicz dive for the bag last night and tag it with his glove? was that stupid? should he have ran through the base tagging it with his foot. he does get his side of the base so he could have done that.
i think maybe it’s faster to dive for the bag on defense ,but not on offense. just kidding.
…and then clemens slid feet first into first to make an out. there sure is a whole lot of diving and sliding going on at first base. just saying.

  45. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

    skinny mike and bj,

agreed, defense wins championships. We have enough hitters to score some runs. Look at the 2001 team. They were possibly one of the worse hitting teams we had and were one inning away from being crowned.

Giambi pinch hitter. If Sierra,Strawberry,Fielder could do it and accept it why wouldnt he.

Time to grind out some wins. Playoffs are not blowouts. Its more of the tight scoring games, pitchers battling and timely hitting that get you over.

    *GAME TIME NOTES*

    · Dice-L next start has been pushed to Saturday, giving him 7-days off.

    · Bostons arrived in Toronto at 4:00 AM

    · Sox are complaining about the Toronto’s “cold” 60° weather

    · Best reaction to ShelleyGate by Matt Schweber: Sometimes, it’s necessary to express the truth, no matter how vulgar, unseemly, or even obscene it may appear. I commend Shelley Duncan for the courage of his conviction and the valor to convey the truth.”

    · Boston Hearld says the Soxs are in a “dumpster of denial”

    · Bernie Williams will be performing with Jose Feliciano at the Utopia Paradise Theater this Saturday night

  47. Mike S. September 17th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

I looked it up. Melky is 1 for his last 31.

  48. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Yanks seem to have a trend of let downs after many of their exhausting Boston series. Last time was Tampa … remember that disaster of a series?

Daniel Cabrera is only 9-16. He’s big and can throw hard, but he’s erratic & inconsistent, and occasionally he’s shown really good stuff. I saw NY face him at the stadium on a night when NY could only muster a weak hit or two against him.

After this Boston series NY better not be complacent or take for granted they’ll beat him just because he’s 9-16 and playing for Baltimore. If NY goes in with that frame of mind instead of going out and playing good ball, Cabrera could pitch well enough to capitalize.

  49. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    randy L:

It’s not a dumb question, there are actually some physics behind slinding (in theory). See the wiki link below. To me, the issu is that it makes sense for a fielder to dive because: a) you have to catch the ball with your mitt, not your foot, and b) if you are diving to the bag (Like minky di last night), they aren’t usually runnign full speed and it is much easier to “time” the dive correctly so that you land exactly on the bag. If Melky could do this running to first, he might get there a little faster ,, putting aside injury risk. But he can’t, and you can verify this by watching his slides/dives where he wither takles 3 stutter steps to slow down, or hits the dirt 5 feet in front of th bag and slows donw quickly.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does.....ase_faster

  50. Mike S. September 17th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

    1 for last 27. Sorry. Still….

  51. Rick September 17th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

Lowell ? For the right $$$ and a sincere desire to play in the Bronx opposed to silly Boston, I’d consider him for a 2-year deal with A-Rod moving to SS and Captain Jetes prolonging his career by shifting to 1st base. It could be a good move for all concerned but that’s for offseason discussion.

  52. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    Dr. A–60 as cold?!

I would think Boston has thicker skin than that! Heck, when it’s 60 in Syracuse it’s time to break out the bikini!

…Okay, maybe not right now, but in April when we’ve got that first warm day after MONTHS of 10 F weather…

  53. Phil - 27 in '07 September 17th, 2007 at 6:29 pm

There is only one reason to dive or slide into first base: to prevent a collision. The batter has the right of way and should always run through the bag unless he is going to be tagged while the 1B is away from the bag and the runner is trying to avoid the tag.

The reason defenders dive is because they cannot overrun the base for fear of colliding with the runner. The runner has the right to the bag and the line through the bag. The reason Rocket and Minky dove was to be able to take a direct route to the bag and to not run through it and get nailed by the runner.

  54. Hobs September 17th, 2007 at 6:35 pm

    Okay…

sliding into first no matter the slide does in fact slow you down. You begin decelerating the moment you leave the ground so running hard all the way through the bag is your best bet.

Sliding into second/third is quicker because the impact with the ground decelerates you faster and more adequately than running standing in. By lowering your center mass it is MUCH less likely your inertia will carry you off the bag as it would if you tried to come to a halt standing up. This is also ignoring the obvious notion of becoming a harder target to tag…

Olympic runners don’t dive because they are afraid of getting hurt…If they had to stop exactly on the line at the end of the race I garuntee you they’d all be diving at the end….

  55. Hobs September 17th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

woops…i meant “olympic runners don’t dive NOT because they are afraid of getting hurt”

  56. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Putting Jeter at first is a good idea, but I dont think hes ready to hang em up at short yet. I expect him to come out next year and play gold glove caliber defense, being the proud competitor that he is.
A-rod is to big now to play short. I think he is comfortable playing third(from what iv heard).

If Jeter were to go to first than there would be no use for Lowell unless we lost A-rod to free agency.

Again, if all stays the same for next year. I would enjoy watching Lowell play first base in a Yankee uniform. GOOD GLOVE,BAT AND ATTITUDE.

  57. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:36 pm

Regarding whether a head-first plunge to first base gets you to your destination faster than running through, it does.

So why don’t Olympic sprinters do it? Because they’d tear half their bare skin off every time when they land, and probably get injured with a variety of other performance-hindering bumps and bruises too. Often, they’re racing in qualifying heats and need to run again (usually needing to go even faster) soon after a race. If they’re running multiple events they may have to rave a qualifying heat the same day or the day after a final.

It’s actually better for their bodies to gradually decelerate after a race rather than stopping abruptly in any way, which is why you often see them coasting 40-50 meters into the turn after finish line of a 100m race.

So, they could steal an occasional race but they don’t do it because they can get injured. Same applies to baseball players. Baseball players are at less risk of injury because they dive onto dirt rather than a track, they’re wearing thicker & more skin-covering clothes than lightweight lycra shorts, many are wearing gloves, some are wearing pads, and they’re all wearing jock cups. Yes, that cup DOES make a difference in diving if you’ve ever tried it with or without.

  58. Dr. Acula September 17th, 2007 at 6:38 pm

that’s not cold, but I don’t like it when temperatures drop so quickly – four weeks ago it was a nice 80 degrees.

  59. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

I dont know if this question has been asked but if you slide head first, would that get you their quicker. I saw Ricky Henderson and Vince Coleman do it with the notion that it did. Not sure.

  60. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

    Sorry,

Ranting guy you answered my question.

    Need to refresh more often.

  61. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

SOS – it does get you there quicker if you don’t dive too early or too late.

  62. Global Warming September 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

I like Damon in CF, Melky has been abysmal with the bat.

With Doug M at 1B, it’s a good balance between hitting and defense.

This lineup and Matsui DH/Damon LF/Melky CF/Giambi 1B look to be our Playoff lineups. Sort of a 1A and 1B, depending on who you play and who is pitching. If we are matched up against the Angels, then you will probably be seeing Alphabet Soup at 1B for the majority which is the right thing to do.

  63. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

    SOS27-

I like defense as much as the next guy, but it really isn’t as simple as “defense wins championships”. What wins championships is consistently scoring more runs than your opponents. Usually, but not always, this is a combination of good pitching and hitting, with defense and potentially speed on top of that. But pitching is much more important in preventing runs than defense. 2001 was a great example of balance by the Yankees, 3rd in league ERA and 5th in runs scored. I don’t have any team defense stats handy, but really doubt that was an above average defensive team with Jeter at SS, Sori at 2B, Bernie in CF and Kobby in left.

For fun, here are how the Yankees in the last run “did” or didn’t do it it. ERA Rank/Runs Scored Rank:

    1995: 7th ERA/6th RS
    1996: 2/9
    1997: 2/2
    1998: 1/1
    1999: 2/3
    2000: 6/6
    2001: 3/5
    2002: 4/1
    2003: 3/3
    2004: 6/2
    2005: 9/2
    2006: 6/1

Of the “Ring: teams, we had 1 that was a result of great pitching and timely hitting in the post season with a medicore offense (1996), 1 that was simply dominant in all facets of the game (1998), one thas was great and well-balanced between pitching and hitting (1999) and one that was simply lucky/intangibles/”knows how to win” (2000).

Of the teams that didnt win, the 1997 club was claerly the best but just had bad innopportune luck in the short series, with an untimely gopher ball by Mo. The 2003 club also had good enough pitching and hitting but ran into som hot young arms.

Since 2003, they simply haven’t had pitching good enough to win series in the post season as the elite teams cool off the great offense.

  64. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:41 pm

    Sos … Me too sorry

  65. Hobs September 17th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

And i know the decelerationg from the .002 seconds you’re in the air is nothing major…but I’d have to see video evidence of being able to bend and explode off your legs with a perfect dive (avoid ground friction) while mainting constant velocity…to me I don’t see that happening.

There are way to many variables in this to come to a definite conclusion sitting at a chair. Live testing is needed for this to really be settled. Mythbusters did it if I’m correct and found out that you are slower sliding…

  66. Dr. Acula September 17th, 2007 at 6:42 pm

I was thinking about Lowell as a possible 1st baseman. And we would fit our need for a right-handed bat.

  67. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 6:43 pm

Yes, my son always gets very frustrated with me when he comes at me with, “Do you know why the other team won??” And I always say, “Yes, they scored more points.” :)

  68. Phil - 27 in '07 September 17th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Please allow me to give you some empirical (sp?) evidence:

I coach high school baseball and every once in awhile, one of the kids pulls a Melky. To stop them of the bad habit, I have him run three times sliding into first base…then have him sprint through first base three times. I time all of their runs. I always have them do the slide runs first while they are fresher. Guess what always happens?

That’s right…running through the bag always gets you to the bag faster.

  69. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Having said that, I think it takes a balance of offense and defense. You can’t win without having the most points, and you can’t have the most points without having good defense (usually).

  70. Global Warming September 17th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

By the way, big props for Roger Clemens last night, what a performance by the old timer.

  71. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

I wonder if Michael Johnson could run as fast in sweats, batting gloves and a jock cup, would the world record for 200m be less than 19 seconds instead of 19.32?

  72. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Yes, Roger really impressed last night. Thankfully, more so than 38complaints.com impressed.

  73. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Yes, the ROCKET was TOUGH ALL DAY!! Did you hear the announcers saying that Joba has been hanging out with him, and has told Rocket when he does certain things, “You’re doing it this way, but you told me to do it this way…” and Rocket told Joba to “do what I say, not what I do.”

  74. Phil - 27 in '07 September 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

If you have the most points, you’ll never win. If you have the most runs, you’ll always win. :)

  75. S.o.S.27 September 17th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

    Michael T,

Great stats. But doesnt great pitching and great defense go hand in hand. Perfect example, yesterdays game Doug saved a couple of runs for Clemens. So it will show Clemens pitching a shutout but in reality if it was any other first baseman their,it would have hiked up his e.r.a.

  76. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 6:51 pm

    Phil – point taken! :)

  77. Global Warming September 17th, 2007 at 6:54 pm

One last thing, I’m hoping we don’t face a typical post Red Sox Series let down here at Game 1 against the Orioles.

    That would be disappointing.

  78. Ranting Guy September 17th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

I ran track for 7 years (many moons ago) and in track you learn that a well-timed lean (or lunge if you’re either desparate or dramatic) will get you there sooner, and an I’ll-timed lean/lunge will not.

Same goes for a dive which is not worth it because it’s just asking for an injury anyways. If you don’t time it right you won’t get there sooner. You could, but unless you’ve practice it once in a while, you probably won’t.

Pitching and defense are definitely “partners” in keeping runs off the board. But, I would argue that dominant opitching (i.e. no walks and lots of Ks) can cover up for poor defense. But: lots of balls in play coupled with poor range up the middle like the 04-06 vintage Yanks is not a recipe for success.

ah, but phil, you the tester has already made up your mind. if you are clicking the stopwatch, you are hardly impartial. not exactly a scientific test.
maybe some people are better at diving than others. according to some theories a dive to the base that is all in the air so there is no friction slowing things down is the fastest. a dive would be an athletic move and someone like ricky henderson might have it down where a david ortiz might have a little problem with diving.

They have played like garbage all year against the Orioles.

Its hard to explain but, it comes down to pitching. The Orioles own Yankees pitching. Its not going to change now so they better bring the lumber the next 3 days.

Hughes again showing why he’s not yet ready for primetime. Simply can’t throw enough quality strikes to be a consistent pitcher at the ML level at this time.

If I’m Torre, and they make the playoffs, Ian Kennedy gets a start before Hughes. He’s a better pitcher.

Hype is one thing, production is another. Right now, he’s more hype than production. Its not like he has to face real teams. He’s facing awful teams and still can’t find any consistency from start to start.

IPK has shown me a lot more than Hughes, but he is already at 165 innings this year. With 2-3 more regular season starts he will be above 180 for his first year as a pro. This is probably a huge increase over a year for a college pitcher.

It is going to be a dilemma down the stretch and into the playoffs.

  166. SJ44 September 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

    Michael,

Perhaps but, he is older and more experienced, in terms of pitching, than Hughes. I think he will be able to handle it.

Put it this way, Kennedy knows how to pitch. Hughes does not. That can’t be overlooked when putting together the playoff roster.

Plus, Kennedy seems to be getting better from start to start. I just don’t see that with Hughes.

He can’t pitch at Yankee Stadium, can’t throw consistent strikes and, as I have maintained since he has returned, has less velocity and stuff than he did prior to his injuries.

I’m all “patience” and all that stuff. However, its a pennant race and he is in the rotation. Either do the job or find somebody else to do it. It may sound harsh but, that’s the reality of playing for a team that has playoff and World Series aspirations.

Putting the team in another first inning hole against a horrible Baltimore team is inexcusable.

They have a bunch of guys in that bullpen. First sign of another struggle, get him out of there and find somebody else.

You hate giving these games away to the Orioles. Their inability to beat Baltimore is why they are in second place.

  167. Miller September 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

reall BBB, you are right, Its getting to the point where Matsui doesnt show any signs of getting out of this slump which is possible as to why Arod hasnt hit a homerun in 31 AB. Just a thought.

Most troubling about Hughes is that he has had about thirty 0-2 counts the past four starts and I can’t remember him striking anyone out without getting to 2-2, 3-2 or the like.

SJ- To me Hughes or IPK isn’t a matter of who is better right now, it is whether you want to risk piling 200 innings onto a 24 year arm that probably only threw 150 last year.

  190. SJ44 September 17th, 2007 at 7:49 pm

What’s worse is, he can’t locate it. Since he has come back, he pitches backwards. He doesn’t challenge guys with his fastball late in counts. Its almost as if he is gunshy and is trying to trick them.

Its why its always dangerous with pitchers who have missed a lot of time. They lose the feel for how to attack hitters.

There is an art to pitching. Its not just throwing or the radar gun. We see that in Kennedy’s starts and saw that with guys like Clemens and Schlling.

Right now, Hughes doesn’t have that yet. Will he get it? Hopefully, at some point in his career.

He’s young and he has that going for him. I know this much though, if I’m the GM, and the Twins call about Santana, I would trade Hughes in a heartbeat for him.

    Joba or Ian? No way.

Looking at the standings, it wont make much difference what happens in CLE Vs DET series as long as we win 2. If CLE is swept, we have both CLE and DET behind in standings, if DET is swept our wild card lead will be huge and if it goes 2-1 or 1-2, we gain ground on one and dont lose any ground to other.

  210. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 7:56 pm

    SJ44,

You’d be selling low on Hughes if you traded him for Santana now. You admit he’s lost his touch because he’s been injured last year. He’s thrown a few good games and this one still isn’t in the books yet. I like Kennedy too but he’s only had 3 September starts. Jeff Karstens had a great September too last year. I’d go to war with Kennedy, but stuff-wise Hughes is much betetr. Even with a bad year, if I had to include one pitcher for Santana it would have to be a touch and feel guy like Kennedy as opposed to someone most think could be a future ace in Hughes.

  211. Kevin M. September 17th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

SJ44…Looking forward to you jumping on the Hughes bandwagon once he settles down here. Remember when you said you’d rather have Jeff Weaver than Hughes down the stretch??? Have you checked their numbers since you said that?

one question that hits me about this game is why do two old guys averaging about 43 throw as hard as a touted yankees phenom. i know it was a fast espn gun last night, but what’s up with hughes’ velocity ?

  222. Giuseppe Franco September 17th, 2007 at 8:00 pm

  235. Big Johnson September 17th, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    “Joba or Ian? No way.”

There is only one logical reason not to trade any of these players, next year is Santana’s walk year. If you could swap any one pitcher for Santana with equal number of contract years you would do it in a heartbeat, trust me.

Sanatana has dominated the league for years. Chamberlain for weeks. Kennedy for days. They all have tremendous potential, but there is absolutely no guarantee.

One could only dream that a Chamberlain or Kennedy could become half of what Santana is. He is that special. Chamberlain or Kennedy might become special. The jury is out. There is no pitcher or prospect in this league ANY GM wouldn’t trade for Santana. You are kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

I love Kennedy and Chamberlain as much as the next guy, but saying you wouldn’t trade them for the single most dominant pitcher over the past few years is emotional and irrational.

    BJ

  236. SJ44 September 17th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

Anybody who wouldn’t trade Hughes for Santana is crazy. One guy is either the best or second best pitcher in the league, is lefthanded and still young.

The other is a young kid with potential. Its a no brainer deal for the Yankees although I am well aware that’s a trade the Twins would never make.

  239. CaptainsCorner September 17th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

It seems like Hughes has trouble in the the first couple of innings of every game he starts. He throws way too many fastballs and thinks that he can over power batters with it like he did in the minors. When in the majors it isnt that good of a fastball. He also hangs way too many curveballs. Joba and even Kennedy have so far looked way more polished with their pitches then he does.

  240. migames September 17th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

The hypothetical was a one for one type swap which I am well aware is not going to happen.

Obviously, a Santana trade would require multiple players.

The only way you trade for him (or attempt to) is knowing you can sign him to an extension prior to free agency.

If he is willing to test the market, clearly, you would just wait it out.

Jenn: I think you mean the Tigers last year?

  257. Giuseppe Franco September 17th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

The problem is not that Hughes is throwing mostly fastballs. It’s that he’s not locating them well and doesn’t have good command with it.

Clemens throws about as hard as Hughes right now and he pitched great last night.

The fastball is still the best pitch in MLB if you can locate it. Every other pitch in a pitcher’s arsenal is setup by it.

  258. passer by September 17th, 2007 at 8:12 pm

May be it is a good idea for Phil to throw an inning to the bench guys before every game.

  259. Kevin M. September 17th, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Captains’ Corner…your analysis is correct but I put the blame on Posada for calling only FB’s in that first inning. I think they talked to Phil when he was struggling and told him to stop shaking his catcher’s off (which he used to do quite a bit but never does anymore). Once PO started calling some off speed stuff mixed in the resutls changed immediately.

  271. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 8:16 pm

What you are really dong if you trade one of our kids for Santana is trading a no-cost starter for 4 years plus about $180 million to get Santana for 6-7 years, including next year. And if you don’t sign him to an extension, you are trading young, under control talent for a one-year rental.

And, if you wait until 2009 you could have Santana, and the kids, spending only the money and draft picks.

This isn’t a no-brainer, unless you look at the strawman of Santan vs. Hughes and put aside the control/monety issues.

Meanwhile, that was the chating on a fastball I was calling for last AB from Matsui.

“Not with Chamberlain BJ. That’s a kid I don’t deal.”

I understand the emotion. Its not a strategic move though. If Chamberlain had two or three years of dominance I would agree with you. No pitcher, even Joba is beyond a trade when you are talking about the single most dominant guy in the league for years. Further, he is not some 40 year old guy we are talking about here.

The only upside to a Joba is years, and you would have to guarantee me he will perform at that incredible level. You are not improving talent wise. You are risking everything for perhaps a couple of years.

Ponder what I am saying a bit more and I think you will see it really does make more sense.

I don’t think anyone would dispute the notion that if the Twinkies are going to allow Santana to hit the market, the Yankees will be major players. Despite the current “plan”, all bets are off when a premier SP becomes available.

I’d be stunned if that ever happens, though. As we all know, the one of the worst/cheapest/crookedest owners in baseball owns the Twins.

Joba hasn’t even shown his full reportoire of pitches yet. He unveiled his 12 to 6 curveball last night and his changeup is dynamite.

I am not “off” any bandwagon. We are having a baseball discussion. Its not cheerleader practice.

I hope the kid does very well. Let’s be honest, he’s facing a team that quit a month ago. Do you not think he should be solid in this game?

  308. Kevin M. September 17th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

They had this long shot of Poppi sitting on the bench hanging his head.

    6-outs left.

All the talk about ‘let-down’ – it’s all ON boston.

  341. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

back to the Johan Santana discussion, does anyone think the Yanks could get him without giving up Joba? I’m curious what other teams would offer. You’d have to give up top young talent plus pay him $175M/6 range – or something close to that. The Twins might ask for Joba and Hughes.

  342. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 8:45 pm

  345. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

Trick to Phil Hughes’ starts: Have someone else pitch the first inning, or let Phil take a first inning’s worth of warm up pitches!

  347. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 8:48 pm

Based on the depleted state of the Twins’ minors system, the team that offers 3+ position prospects will probably have an inside track to Santana.

It would make a lot of sense for them to trade Santana to the NL, where they wouldn’t have to see Santana 3-4 times per year.

    September 17th, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I’m all “patience and all that stuff.

  352. ~Adam. September 17th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Does anyone else think that Hughes just needs to warm up longer? Once he gets out of the first, he’s great.

  353. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Sherri – I think the Yanks could maybe get Santana for Hughes and 2-3 of their top 5 non-Joba minor leaguers. However, I guess it would all come down to who the other teams offer. If Boston offered Ellsbury and Buchholz and the Twins were going to bite, how much would NY offer to keep him out of Boston? The Twins will not have a hard time finding buyers, even if Santana would command a huge deal.

  354. Dr. Acula September 17th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

Maybe we can get Santana in return for a Scoresâ„¢ franchise ;)

  355. ~Adam. September 17th, 2007 at 8:50 pm

  356. dontfirecash September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

I wouldn’t trade anyone for Johan. Why pay for a guy twice?

  357. Dr. Acula September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Seriously Rebecca, you just need to stretch out that arm – that and an emory board glued to your glove.

  358. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

There is no way the Yankees should give up TWO top pitching prospects for Santana. That makes no sense at all, no matter how great Santana is. Two very good young cheap pitchers are more valueable than one great one. Remember, the kids are 7 years younger than Santana too.

I’d consider Cano, Kennedy and another prospect as a starting point for Santana if the fo decides a trade is necessary. Maybe Horne could be thrown in too if the Yanks don’t think he’ll become a star. Santana, Wang, Hughes and Joba is a great rotation for years to come.

  359. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

    I love Joba-

Now you are throwing down the gauntlet. I was a pretty darn good athlete back in the day and even played high caliber baseball into mid high school. Of course, I did have to move over from short to 2nd due to lack of arm strength.

I don’t really think it has much to do with athleticism. Throwing hard is simply amatter of generating arm speed, which is a natural talent that can be imprioved withn reason by mechanics and coaching. But I knew some pretty bad atheletes in little leagyue/legion who could still bring it.

  360. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 8:51 pm

  363. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

YankeeJosh – even if its the best pitcher in baseball? you know Boston would be as active as anyone in that bidding. Can the Yankees let him go to Boston even if they offer a ton of talent? That would be quite painful.

  364. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 17th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Getting Santana might be a big bonus, he might perform “Oye Como Va” for us!

  365. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

If I had to pick a “natural” trade partner for the Twins, it would probably be the Dodgers. They are loaded with position prospects and have the revenue stream to support the $25M/yr that Santana will require.

The Diamondbacks have almost as deep a pool of talent, but not the cash.

Don’t count the Mets out. If Omar put two of Gomez/Martinez/Milledge in a package, the Twins would be interested.

  374. dontfirecash September 17th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

    Sherri,
They can “buy” him in the 08-09 offseason. I’m pretty sure Cash said the following earlier in the season: “Why pay twice for a guy?”

  375. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

    Boston Dave,

I understand. And no one wants Santana here more than me. But for Santana you get 30 starts a year, where he is dominant. If you trade Joba and Hughes for him, you are losing 60 very good starts a year. So even with Santana being great 30 times, you still have 30 games you’d have to fill that you wouldn’t by keeping the players. Thus, if I am making the trade, at worst I give up ONE stud pitching prospect. Melky, Cano, Miranda, and Tabata could all be included too. But the team needs 5 starters and given what we’ve seen of Joba and Hughes, giving up 2 for 1 is not a wise move imo.

  376. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

  398. Terry in N.H. September 17th, 2007 at 9:06 pm

If the Yanks could acquire Santana and still employ Joba and Kennedy i’d do it. I think the world of Hughes and he is still very young and raw in some ways, but Kennedy would offset the rotation of Santana, wang, Joba and etc. I is always in my mind that the Yanks should only aquire him only if he is offered and the Redsox are invovled, but getting him as a free agent and having a rotation of
    1.Santana
    2.Wang
    3.Joba
    4.Hughes
    5.Kennedy

that is a freak rotation which would blow the sox rotation out of the water. Kennedy is the only “soft” thrower of the bunch, but has better control.
If they were to obtain Santana the Yanks should package Hughes “I feel sick saying that” along with Hilligoss and Tabata. That sounds like alot of talent to give up for him. I’m at a lost on this one!

    Boston Dave,

That’s a really tough call. I’d hate giving up Joba, since his stuff looks so awesome. Santana is older and if he breaks down the trade could be awful.

I’d at least have to consider it. If I’m throwing Cano in, I’d probably try and get the Twins to take Kennedy. I love his moxy, but for Santana he’s the chip I’d try and use if the Twins bite. If not, with Joba I’d probably have to insist on giving up lesser secondary prospects or players.

  409. David September 17th, 2007 at 9:09 pm

Okay, who’s going to defend Phil loading the bases up?

  410. David September 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

And you guys are nuts to think of trading Joba/IPK/Hughes (any combination or any one) for Santana.

Johan is only getting older people. Let’s ride our kids as long as we can.

  411. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Man, Phil has got to get those first inning jitters out of his system!

Though, if K-Ram does the job here, Phil can get his first Stadium win…

  412. I love Joba September 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm

    Please let Edwar do well!

  417. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    Terry,

I agree, if you trade for Santana you can only give up one of the big three- Kennedy, Hughes, Joba.

Let’s also remember we still don’t know what Joba would do as a starter in the Bigs. He’s been awesome in relief, but can he keep it up from 7 innings? That’s still not proven.

  418. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

IMO, the Yankees aren’t a good match for the Twins, trade-wise. The Twins have no position players, particulary infielders. The Yankees do not have MiLB depth in the IF, so the teams like the Angels and Dodgers, who have a ton of MLB ready IF are the best matches.

However, since the Angels won’t trade their prospects (Bill Stoneman might be the worst/luckiest GM, along with Bill Bavasi in Seattle), I would suggest Dodger blue for Santana. As I indicated earlier, that would keep him out the AL as well.

In the NL West, Santana might very well have an ERA under 2.00.

  419. This Year 27 in '07 September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Torre the moron shows up again. Hughes has no arm strngth because he was injured fo so long. He should have had Edwar ready to go as soon as he reached 80 pitches. Cash, please ease him out next year. And if Guidry is not telling him this stuff, he should go as well.

  420. Michael T September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

A litte dodgy bringing in Edwar, as the most likely outcomes are strikeout or HR.

This is where you need someone who keeps the ball in the park, but I guess it is too early for Viz in the Torre playbook (TM).

  421. migames September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Okay, who’s going to defend Phil loading the bases up?

I will. Eric Gagne was warming up and hit Phil’s elbow

  422. Chicago Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Yes, Phil still can’t seem to cut down on his pitch count and/or stretch out his starts. Also, his K-to-walk ratio isn’t improving much. Hopefully he’ll get better next year once he’s 100% healthy…

  423. David September 17th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

    Go NYR -

This is a playoff race. You take him out as he obviously cannot find the strike zone.

The kid is done. Get a fresh arm in and get out of the inning. The time for learning was a couple months ago.

  424. Scooter September 17th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

I’m a little nervous with Chocolate Rain in this situation, but it’s time to get Phil out of there. He gave us a good game and it’s time for the relievers to do their part.

Already everyone wants to boot Phil back to the minors. He did good.

  425. Dr. Acula September 17th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

digya know he got divorced from Nancy.

  426. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

dontfirecash – i have to disagree with you. the twins are NOT letting santana hit free agency. they will trade him and the team that trades for him will only do so if he signs an extension. i am sure santana will only sign with a team he wants to play for, but i dont think he hits free agency. unless the twins new GM is a complete imbecile, they will sign him or trade him next season or even this offseason.

  427. 13 September 17th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

And if Joe did not take Phil out we would be yelling at Joe for mismanaging. It was time to take him out, he ran out of gas.

Really? outside of Beckett they have a shell of Schilling and 3 prayers. Please. This thing aint over.

  437. jennifer 27 in 07 September 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Nice JOB. All in all Phil pitched a pretty good game. He had a bad first, and got into trouble in the 6th. He’s good inbetween. They just need to figure out how to fix the ends of the game.

  438. tonyb September 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

I don’t think you can defend Hughes loading the bases. It seems to be a product of throwing alot of pitches early in the game and having nothing left in the tank in the 6th. Phil does not have the stamina needed to go beyond 100 pitches.

Oh, and Edwar is the shizzle. Nice to have a strikeout artist to bring in for situations like that.

  439. randy l September 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    michael t-
throwing hard is an athletic ability, but you can improve it a lot with training. for a simple training program to do with no equipment or radar gun,go on to a football field where you can measure yardage accurately. if someone can throw 90+mph they can long toss the whole 100 yards. whatever your maximum distance is, throw every day for a few weeks and you’ll see your distance increase. if your distance increases, your velocity of course does too.

  440. Dimitri September 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

who uses the term “wall of sound” more? Michael Kay or Phil Spector?

  443. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

p.s. dont fire cash – santana took much less money to stay with the twins originally. he is less likely to cry for $28M a year if he can just sign a longterm deal with a team for $25M/yr. he could….. but he seems less likely. at this point he probably jsut wants to be on a team that will contend and not be cheap in keeping their talent.

  447. Go NYR September 17th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

I would not want Johan anywhere nea this team. He would be our next Randy Johnson, Kevin Brown type pitcher. Plus he has let up over 30 homers. Thats a red flag to me. His homerun total has steadily increased the past few years. Johan Santana, no thanks.

  448. 13 September 17th, 2007 at 9:16 pm

  449. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

i am not betting on it, but boston could legitimately be swept in toronto and the yanks could and probably should sweep. even then, boston has a cake schedule with oakland and minnesota basically packing it up already. but it could get close… really close….

Gibbons is not making the same mistake with McGowan that he did with Halladay. He’s starting the 9th at 105 pitches.

  456. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:20 pm

go NYR – Santana is 28 – generally thought of as a pitchers prime. are you really comparing him to guys who were over 40 when NY got them?? santana is still the best pitcher in baseball. he can give up HR as long as he keeps his ERA down. he probably doesnt quite have the intensity he would ahve if he didnt know his team sucked. you can say you dont want to give up talent and $$$ for him, but its not really right to compare him to Unit and Brown.

  534. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Tom Caron and Jim Rice (NESN post-game) are talking about how the Red Sox have a 6 game edge for the Wild Card, and how it’s not whether you win the Division, but that you get into the playoffs. Their contention is that the RS “should” be okay for the WC.

  535. Go NYR September 17th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Mat with one tI was basically saying that the Yankees dont have much luck with big name pitching acquisitions. They come here and get hurt or are horrible. Its not worth giving up our prospects or a ton of money for a 30 year old pitcher. Its not long before the downside of his career starts.

  536. Mat September 17th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Boston Dave, 100 agree with you, was a way for a few minutes when i saw that ridiculous post.

Also, ball flys out of the homer dome in left.

yanks should do everything in their power to get santana.

  537. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

If the Yanks take care of business and win 2 of 3 against Baltimore, even if Detroit takes 2 of 3 from Cleveland, the Yanks would then be just 1 behind Cleveland. If the Yanks pass cleveland, then you let the Tigers and Indians fight it out for the Central and secure the wild card. So, Tigers victories do help, though not as much as Tigers losses obviously.

  538. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

  548. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

I don’t know if they are conceding the division, but they are certainly very, very nervous, because they just can’t find any SP, other than Beckett. He’s been a true ace for them (like him or not), but after that, it’s actually pretty awful.

  562. Mat September 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Yanks have not had luck with big name guys lately. They had some pretty good luck with Key, Cone, Wells and even Mussina

their luck would change if they traded for good pitchers as opposed to media hyped bums like UNIT, vazquez, pavano and Brown. Unit was way over the hill when he joined the team. His numbers were much better in the NL.

Stay away from the marginal national league pitchers.

Johan — proven commodity. There are like 5-6 guys in his league. Halliday, Peavey, Oswalt, Webb and sabathia as of late.

if the yanks are going to make a move, they should only go for that calibre of player.

  563. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 9:42 pm

NYR and PBL – i cant argue if you are saying that the yanks should keep Joba and Hughes… but dont call Johan a risk or an aging veteran. he is in his prime and ill take any best from anyone who thinks he will falter. he is nasty.

Santana will probably never happen since the twins would pretty much require

    Melky
    Joba
    Hughes

I just dont see their GM getting out of the twin cities alive if he makes a trade for anything less during this offseason.

if the yankees can get him for less, they should pull the trigger.

Look, you need to selectively move guys in the minors when they have value for major league ready guys, especially if you can get studs like santana.

Why didnt Viz start the inning…Since when is Ramirez a pitcher that should be trusted in the 7th inning of a game you have to win?? Where is Farns…??? What is Clueless doing with this game..He is treating it like the game against Toronto when he brought Britton in..Makes no sense…

You can have Ramirez start the inning. However, he has to be out of there after the Roberts hit. That was a mistake and it cost them.

For whatever reason, they can’t pitch to this lineup. The only way to beat them is to keep scoring. Need more than 7 tonight.

Farnsworth either is still hurt or may pitch the 8th.

Jorge has got to stay at first. Its the 5th time in the last month he has gotten thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

over looking pete blog from saturday’s game during the break. this killed me:

UPDATE, 4:52 p.m.: I see Dane Cook in the Fox booth. What a time to not have a hand grenade. I remember hearing about him last year, wondering what all the fuss was about and then watching his show on HBO. It was brutal.
I used to get comedy albums when I was a kid. Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Rodney Dangerfield. Those guys were funny. Dane Cook is like a drunk guy at a bar at 2 a.m. who thinks he’s funny and he’s not.
But some marketing whiz at MLB figures he’s down with the kids and they hire him to do promos. You know who should do promos? Roberto DeNiro. Everybody likes DeNiro. Or Denzel Washington. Who doesn’t like him? Get Jay-Z. But Dane Cook?

The o’s have walked over 600 batters!! WOW

  662. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Denise – i hope they pitch Buchholz. he will have a tougher time with Toronto and he is approaching his “max innings”. i hope they push him too hard…

Boston Dave, your dispatches have the air of a resistance fighter in occupied France during WW2. I love it. Keep the faith, brother.

  671. Luigi September 17th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

hasn’t hafner been struggling with injuries all year?

  672. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 10:11 pm

yeah well, a no hitter against the lowly Orioles is a lot different when your team desparately needs you and you are not pitching at Fenway…..Jays need to work the count on him Wed nite.

  673. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Sherri – good point. I like Minky too. he may not be an every day 1b but he’s a good guy to have on the team.

  674. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

They are starting Buckholz because they need to push Matsuzaka to 6 days’ rest. He has been brutal the past two months.

  675. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

luigi – probably. he cant be this bad. either way, i hope the injuries linger into the division series against the yanks

I know you guys probably know this, but did you see where Buckholz already has his own blog? http://www.buchwild.com (careful with the spelling!)

  679. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

are the sox definitely starting Buchholz? last i heard it could be Clay or Tavarez.

  680. Rey22 September 17th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

This should be Igawa, Britton, Bruney, or Ohlendorf’s inning. No need to run Viz out back there, again.

  681. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Supposedly, Buckholz will be on a very strict pitch count on Wednesday, as he’s near his pre-set limit. The vets in the Red Sox’ clubhouse are clamoring for him to start game 2 of the ALDS, as he’s “clearly the second best pitcher we have”.

  682. Brandon September 17th, 2007 at 10:15 pm

Sherri…. wow… i just went to the Buchholz blog. rather than making it seem like he is tooting his own horn, he has “The Baseball Insider” post his accolades for him. what a joke. I don’t see Joba doing this.

The Orioles will never be a good team since Cal left. Their owner could give 2 sh-ts about them, all Angelos cares about is his law firm….and money. he won’t sell b/c he is still making good money off owning the O’s. it is sad, b/c Camden Yards is a beautiful ball park, been there many of times, there are plenty of ball fans in the area, they just don’t see a point in going to the park with that product on the field.

com’on Farnsy !!! god it pains me to say it, I believe in you too some how some way !!!!!

  815. Bobcat September 17th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Mussina for 5, Ohlendorf for 1, Pettitte for 1, Edwar for 1, Mo for 1, if it’s a close game.

  818. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Yeah, why would the Angels want us in the ALDS? they’ve owned us! Boston plays them better. Check out the cheer to take Farnworth out!

Put it away Farnsy!!!! lets go yanks!!!!

  820. Luigi September 17th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

  821. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 17th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Optimistically speaking, there is NO reason Mo should have to be in this game…

  826. CaptainsCorner September 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

When you see the word disaster in the dictionary Farns. picture should be right next to it. What did he throw 50 pitches in that inning? The AAA kids are better then him.

  827. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

the Yanks ahve played the Angels fine this year and will be the hot team going into the playoffs.

is anyone watching the catastrophic collapse of the Phillies?

  828. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

this is truly pathetic that Farnsworth well rested arm couldn’t close this thing out…..I sure hope we don’t need him in the postseason…its like he is on Boston’s payroll or something.

  829. Dimitri September 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Honestly, I want to see the Angels in the first round so we can finally end this “Yankees can’t beat Angels” crap.

  830. Chicago Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

My sympathies to Mariano’s arm…and the arms of all the other burned-out arms in the Yanks’ pen…

  832. YankeeJosh September 17th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

i can’t believe rivera is coming into this game.

It’s all been downhill for O.J. after they stopped making the Naked Gun movies.

  867. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

why does Mo have to make it interesting so much lately? is he lights out still?

  868. SJ44 September 17th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

Farnsworth hasn’t pitched in over a week. You expect rust.

The problem is, short starts burns out bullpens. They need starters to go deeper so you don’t burn guys like Ramirez and Viz for multiple innings.

Also, if you look at the season series, the Orioles have pounded every Yankee pitcher this year. For whatever reason, they own the Yankees offensively.

Its why they need to score 10+ runs a game against them. Anything less, its still a game.

Every year, there is a team Yankee pitchers can’t get out. Two years ago, it was Tampa Bay. This year, its Baltimore.

  869. Shirley September 17th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Farnsworth pitched poorly, but it never seems to me a good idea to boo your player. Great Rivera got the job done as he usually does. However, with a five-run lead in the ninth inning, we still needed Rivera to secure the win, and that bothers me!

  870. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

    lol Denise

  871. Chicago Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:10 pm

I think Mo is simply fatigued, used-and-abused, etc., etc. It’s a disease affecting everyone in the Yankee bullpen these days… (except maybe Joba, and even that is changing now!)

  872. randy l September 17th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

right mike- i meant to set up rivera or to spell him when he should be unavailable.
i still wish we had proctor back. it constantly seems like the yankees are a decent reliever short out there. if not proctor than someone. anyone. having to bring your closer in a game like that. damn.
but wow! the lead is 3 1/2 on the tigers and it’s 3 1/2 behind the red sox. there’s a nice symmetry to that. it’s been a good night.

  873. JoeT YANKEES September 17th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

I don’t blame you Peter, when I have to listen to John and Susan (however she spells it) I often want to take the night off from baseball too

GO YANKEES, great win, with of course the exception of Krazy Kyle

  874. Stuart September 17th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

The problem wiht Farnsworth is he stinks. If he just stunk that would be bad enough but he stinks and cannot pitch more then 1 inning or in back to back games and often is not available becuase of numerous maladies.

they have 3 guys in the penthat is it.. the rest are nothing; mo, viz, and joba and that is it…

Hughes looked good except for his usual terrible 1st inning , why does he stink in the first inning…

this pen is why torre burns everyone out… the Orioles probably left 13 men tonight…

  875. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

BJ Upton steals HOME…. 4-3 Tampa

  876. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 11:16 pm

I dunno, I think OJ would be available and we know he needs the money, since his book proceeds goes to his buddy, Ron’s, family….

BJ Upton just stole home to make it TAMPA up 4-3!

  877. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Orioles left 11 on base, we left 12!

Hughes must need longer to warm up on days that he starts….

  878. randyhater September 17th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

“The Yankees will need him (Farnsworth) in the playoffs.”

To do what, open the champagne bottles with his teeth? The best thing about tonight’s win is Farnsworth further exposing himself as untrustworthy without costing us a game. And spare me all the excuses about rust, his sore neck, his glasses being too tight, etc. The guy’s horrible and always has been. Cash should keep him off the post season roster as it’s the only way to keep Joe from using him in a big spot.

Terrific win all around and with Mussina going tommorow, Joe was 100% right to empty the pen to lock this one up. Pick up two more on Boston by close of business on Sunday, and next week will be very, very interesting.

  879. Denise G September 17th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

the Orioles announcer, former player, Rick Dempsey, can’t even pronounce Cano’s name right, he did it twice…so funny

    sweet victory

  881. Chicago Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Question is…Will Mussina be effective tomorrow, or back to his old ways?

In the meantime, hopefully A.J. Burnett can school Boston like he did the Yankees the last time out.

  882. Boston Dave September 17th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

call me crazy but i really expect Mussina to pitch well tomorrow – by well I mean 6 1/3 2ER but that isnt bad

Mussina s/b fine tomorrow, just how long is the question

  886. Brandon September 17th, 2007 at 11:42 pm

    oh god Wussina pitching tomorrow

APB on every bat in the Yankees lineup tomorrow, stand on alert

  887. PittsburghYankeeFan September 18th, 2007 at 12:32 am

Farnsworth should have to earn a playoff roster spot. You cannot be inconsistent and be trusted.

Proctor would have been used and likely would have lost a few games in the past few weeks–great trade for Betimit, and Joe’s toy was taken away.

Wait for Santana to be a free agent. I agree with Cashman–why pay for him twice? He’s NOT going to sign an extension without testing the market.

Mussina has to pitch his way onto the post-season roster. They are trying to win the WS, not make a temperamental pitcher happy.

If Burnett toasts the Sox, and Yankees win tomorrow—two in the loss column with 11 to play??? Could it happen?

  888. I love Joba September 18th, 2007 at 12:40 am

If the Devil Rays had just held on to those 2 games last week it would only be 1 in the loss column right now.

  889. I love Joba September 18th, 2007 at 12:41 am

Also, I hope the guys come ready to score some runs tomorrow. We are probably going to need a lot in order to win. Hopefully A-Rod can get back on track tomorrow. He’s due for a homer.
