Good night from Fenway Park

The Yankees finish the season series with the Red Sox 10-8 with wins in eight of the last 10 games. That could be significant if the teams meet again next month. Would that surprise anybody?

The Yankees were talking about a few main topics after the game: Roger Clemens and his grit, Derek Jeter’s ability to rise to the moment, Joba Chamberlain’s curveball and the defensive clinic Doug Mientkiewicz put on at first base.

Clemens on Jeter: “He’s one of the reasons I got back up off the couch.”

Joba (2-0) got the win but it was Clemens who set the tone with six brilliant innings. I asked Jeter if the Rocket gave them more than they expected. “What else could he have done? He loves big games,” Jeter said.

The Yankees return home for a seven-game homestand that starts tomorrow night. They’ll be a tired bunch. But every game is big with the Tigers hanging in behind them.

Thanks for all the participation. I’ll catch you tomorrow.

the look on pedroia’s face when joba threw the curveball was proceless

he started walking back to the dugout before the ump even made the call.

    Minky is our first baseman!!

Best 3 game set of the year so far. Hands down. Amazing victories. I am absolutely pumped for the playoffs.

Hughes needs to bring his A game Monday. he has had 2 good outings in a row, we need him.

tuesday and weds baltimores starters are very beatable. Monday it is Cabrera who is erratic but can get on a roll….

Boston threw 105v pitches total tonight, cabrera may do that in 4 innings Monday

Meanwhile, Schilling is at Mass General trying to get Derek’s shoe removed from his keyster.

I’m keeping my eye on the Tigers. I’m in no way celebrating early– not this season. The Yanks have to keep on playing hard, and pitching well to get through these next 2 weeks unscathed.

We’re facing the bottom barrel of the AL East– but these games are the closest thing teams like the Orioles, Rays, and Jays have to the playoffs

They will fight us tooth and nail to eliminate our Yankees from the Wildcard. Tooth and nail.

    A couple of things:
    1. Pete, you have the greatest job in the world.
    2. Even though Jeter’s hurting, is there anyone else that you want at the plate in that situation?
    3. Thanks to whomever posted this link (http://www.vintagecotton.com/s.....d_sux/male) mine is on its way, I can’t wait to wear it during the playoffs.
    4. Lastly, I can’t wait for October, true we’re probably getting in on the WC, but who really wants to play the Yankees right now? no one.

  11. Nate September 17th, 2007 at 1:55 am

Wonder if Melky will get a day or two off with all these callups…he’s only hitting .190 in Septmeber.

  12. eelz September 17th, 2007 at 1:58 am

i know he’s not contributing too much these days- but i still love shelley duncan.

Nate, Melky would have gotten a day off if Justin Christian or Brett Gardner was up here. Unfortunately Justin is out for the season & Brett has been snubbed for Sean Henn, Ron Villone and Jeff Karstens :(

Wow. What a game, huh? I missed the last 2 innings, but I’m glad I did because I probably would’ve smashed my computer.

I gotta say that I feel much better now than I did before the game started. I know we’re not supposed to count on help from anyone and control your own destiny, but being 1.5 ahead of Detroit would be too close for comfort.

Yay! for the series win, and being only 4 back in the loss column this could be HUGE.

Yankees know the drill, but we got to take care of the remaining teams. We have a better record against Boston than Orioles.

Also, Cleveland and Angels are tied. If we get the wild card I would much rather face the Indians. The west coast kills the Yankees.

Good win tonight. Blasphemy, for sure, but the Yankees might want to consider using Joba to close against the Red Sox. Mo’s faced the Red Sox so many times. Of course a lot of tonight was his own making. Not advocating hitting anyone, but Mo killed Ellesby’s continuous hit streak since he got called up.

One more thing. Listening to the Pats/Bolts game on the the radio and the radio guy (Madden?) was telling a story about running into a fan wearing a Chargers jersey and Red Sox cap. They asked him about it and he replied, “Self-defense, man”. And the broadcoasters had a good laugh about it saying that’s how it is.

  15. E-ROC September 17th, 2007 at 2:18 am

I’m a huge fan of Brett Gardener and I think he’ll be a our 4th outfielder or at least, be in spring training competing to be the 4th outfielder. The Yankees might elect to keep him AAA to see if he can improve at that level.

    Go Yankees………and Ravens!!

  16. Brandon September 17th, 2007 at 2:20 am

I know E-ROC but it’s only a matter of time before Action Jackson passes him.

    GO YANKEES !!!….& GIANTS :(

p.s. Great outing by Roger tonight. Like most of you I was hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst. Roger wanted to come out for the 7th, but they slammed the door shut on that idea.

Since I’m a big fan of football, I watched that Giants game. I don’t know what went wrong in that game, but Manning showed up and the defense didn’t. I don’t know if Strahan even played. I changing it back and forth with the Colts game. Everytime I would turn it to the Giants game, I saw Strahan standing on the sidelines.

  19. Brandon September 17th, 2007 at 2:45 am

Eli and Plax are the only ones showing up, this who Giants defense and offensively overrated players like Shockey should put a bag over their face

  20. RJPinstripes September 17th, 2007 at 5:40 am

Jeet the Treat and Marvalous Mo and away we go!

  21. Joan in Cheshire September 17th, 2007 at 5:49 am

Never again do I want to hear that Arod is an MVP – He is not. He is a me too player and a me too person. Never mind the team, the wife, the child — it’s all about Alex.

In the meanwhile, Derek Jeter continues on his march towards a first ballot ticket to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame. In all my years of watching baseball, I have never seen such a complete player as Derek. He’s truly a champion on and off the field and those of us who get to see him on a daily basis will never see his likes again. Enjoy him, praise him and thank Dorothy and Charles for sharing him with baseball fans everywhere.

  22. LCâ„¢ September 17th, 2007 at 6:52 am

    Joan,
And where exactly would the Yankees be this season without Alex? He’s hit 2 walkoff homeruns, 2 gamewinning hits off of Papelbon(IN FENWAY), and over 50 hrs this season. Not to mention he’s been a great influence over Melky and Robbie. Yet he’s not an MVP? Instead, he’s a “ME” player? Please. I love Derek as much as the next person, but that doesn’t mean you have to diminish what Alex has done.

  23. Damien September 17th, 2007 at 6:55 am

Joan: You’re post was dumb. Very, very, very, VERY dummb. I too love the Captain. But to disparage A-Rod after the season he has been having is assinine. I mean I can’t even begin to fathom how wrong you are here. It is making my head hurt.

A-Rod has CARRIED this team for most of these season. He is having one of the best offensive seasons in the history of baseball. By anyone. EVER. He’s come through in “the clutch,” in the “non-clutch,” against great pitchers, against bad pitchers, in the first inning, in the ninth inning and every inning in between.

It’s comments like yours that make me think he SHOULD jilt us and go finish out his career as one of the two best players (him and Ruth) in the history of the game somewhere else. We don’t deserve to have him our fans can spout drivel similar to what you just wrote.

    Just minbogglingly assinine…Wow.

  24. Damien September 17th, 2007 at 6:58 am

Excuse the typos in my previous post. I believe I still got my point across.

  25. Sherri September 17th, 2007 at 7:22 am

I’m not sure how Joan got A+B=C. Yes, Jeter is phenomenal, but because he is great, does not mean A-Rod is not. very strange post. Do not diminish was Alex has done for the Yankees this year.

  26. pat September 17th, 2007 at 7:25 am

    Joan
Why the need to compare players head to head? All the members of the 2007 Yankees bring a skill to the table that makes the team stronger. If you want to hate the player, okay, but appreciate the play.

  27. mary ellen September 17th, 2007 at 7:49 am

Last night Jeter showed, once again, that he is the heart, soul and face of the Yankees. They don’t call him Capt. Clutch for nothing! A-Rod is amazing too, and I think the media created an image of him that is bogus. Without him the Yanks would have no hope for the playoffs, as he carried the team during a really bad stretch. He definitely puts too much pressure on himself and this weekend it showed up again. If he can find a way to just relax and play his game, he’ll give us some very exciting moments in October. Just because we worship Jeter (and I admit, I’m guilty of that), we should show appreciation for the mega-talent of A-Rod, because we need him to win the big prize this year! GO YANKS!

  28. BBFan September 17th, 2007 at 8:36 am

No quesiton it is people like Joan who were booing A-Rod last year. They never learn. I wonder what they think about Jeter being on a funk intil that homer.

Without A-Rod, we are not talking about Playoffs this year.

Jeter is great, but all said and done after they both finish their careers, A-Rod will be placed well ahead of Jeter by baseball historians. As someone said above, A-Rod will rank second only to Babe.

  29. jennifer September 17th, 2007 at 8:38 am

Wow, Alex is having one the best all time seasons while carrying this team and he is garbage, because he went into a mini slump? Like that hasn’t happened to every single player on this team including our very own captain. He happened to hit a very big homer while in it. It is truely assine to critize Alex after what he has done this season. Give Jeter props he came up huge in a big spot.

  30. WTF September 17th, 2007 at 9:12 am

Does Joan rememeber who won Friday night’s game with the go-ahead single off Jon Papelbon? Apparently not.

    eelz: That’s not Shelley’s autograph.

  32. 13 September 17th, 2007 at 9:23 am

The Yankees are a TEAM. Look at what Jorge’ has accomplished, as another example let alone Chamberlain, Huges, Petite, Damon in the last half when he was done healing and getting in shape. Each of the Yankees are Yankees. They play big.

  33. chris in fairfield September 17th, 2007 at 9:33 am

i can see immediate dividens with minky at firstbase . the problem is if minky is at first and damon and matsui trade left field and dh it leaves giambi at $20 million on the bench . normally you have to play the guys that get the big bucks .

  34. chris in fairfield September 17th, 2007 at 9:40 am

the other thing is all these players are left handed batters .

  35. pat September 17th, 2007 at 9:48 am

When I hear some of the experts say that A-Rod needs to have a great post season for this season to mean anything, it makes me angry. While I hope he has a mind boggling post season, discounting what he has done to help get the team get to this point is petty and uninformed.
