Wang makes a dream come true for sick fan

091807_17451.jpgI know we have a lot of readers in Taiwan who check in around this time. This is for you guys …

Chieh-Ju Tsai had a photo taken with Derek Jeter and got Alex Rodriguez’s autograph before the game tonight. But it wasn’t until she met Chien-Ming Wang that her dream came true.

Tsai was at the Stadium as part of a Make-A-Wish Foundation trip. The 16-year-old from Taiwan, who has a rare blood disease, wanted to meet Wang and see the Yankees play in person. She made the 20-hour trip on Sunday and will return home tomorrow.

“This is very exciting, she said.

Marisa Mar from Make-A-Wish in Taiwan said that Wang gave Tsai an autographed jersey and other memorabilia along with posing for several photos.

“He was very gracious and humble, she said. “He is the most popular celebrity in Taiwan. Everybody watches him.

Wang regularly visits sick children when he is in Taiwan during the off-season. This is the first time a child came to New York.

“It’s nice that people want to meet me. It’s the least I can do, he said. “I feel honored that she would want to come to a game.

Wang is not pitching until Friday, a day after Tsai leaves. “I told him to win the game for me, she said.

“The 16-year-old from Taiwan, who has a rare blood disease…”

Today I had a tough day at work but after reading this I think my toughest day is nothing compared to what she and many other kids with diseases deal with everyday.

  2. gianthinker

Good for you Wang. There should be more sports stars like Chien-Ming Wang.

  3. Wolf In Pinstripes

Way cool. I love reading about stuff like this. Thanks, Pete.

  4. mel

What a touching story. Best wishes to Ms. Tsai.

  5. josh

I hope Wang wins the Cy for her…. now that’d be sweet…

  6. Josh

wonderful story, but cmon make a wish foundation, keep her there the extra damn day and let her see him pitch!

  7. Summer

Awww, that’s sweet! :) It’s too bad she isn’t able to stay for the game on Friday, but I hope he wins it for her!

  8. Khoa

Very cool. You guys remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer promised a sick kid Paul O’Neill would hit a ridiculous number of dingers for him? Hilarious!

  9. whoisthedogg

Sometimes in the heat of a pennat race we forget that these guys are real people. These are the types of stories that contribute to all that is right in the human animal.

Wang is a class act and I am glad that he is a Yankee!

    Three cheers for Wang

  10. Becca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    Class act.

  11. Ashley

    Thanks for sharing Pete.
I love reading about how kind our Yankees are!!
Wang is an awesome guy, I hope he wins the game Friday for her!!

  12. Skippy

As if there aren’t already enough reasons to love Wang.

  13. ami

This is definately for all of us loyal readers back in Taiwan!
    Nice job, Pete.
Wondered how come the news was not on the local papers.
Thank you for the inspiring story.

  14. YanksFanLV

This is awesome, Great work Pete, you always bring us the stories that we would never read about in any other news outlet.

  15. StandingO'neill

Hey if they can keep her around for another day I have an extra ticket for Friday, I would gladly give it to her. Pete make it happen, lol

  16. Michael

I love Yankee fans. Standing O for StandingO

  17. Bob

The Make-A-Wish Foundation does incredible things for these kids.

  18. bloodyank78

Tiger Wang; sooo glad he’s a Yankee. What a wonderful gesture. If anyone ever has to; or better yet desires to, pick a charitable foundation to donate to Make-A-Wish is about as good as you can get. Class move by posting this Pete. I hope your associates from other outlets spread this story, it’s great stuff.

Well, I am one of the guys watching this blog in a quiet manner
from Taiwan too. But after reading report I can’t resist myself
to drop a line to greet, good job Pete. What a story! A badly
sick girl came to admire Wang to make a wish in a long flight.

IMHO, Wang stands out in a humble manner and contribute greatly to Yankees
with a lot wins. Wang makes himself as a silent pitcher and blame
himself for jobs not well done. Wang acts low profile but it turns out
a great fading virtue. I imagine that girl likes Wang’s way to
get admired, an old fasion way.

    Ryan

  20. Tseng

This almost makes me wish that I had a….. no no, I won’t go there.

  21. Twenty-Three Grannies

Great story. Wang always works hard and is a class act. There’s not much more you can ask.

(Hopefully Chad Finn gets to read this. What kind of name is Coco for a dude?

  22. DadinIowa

Thanks for the story, Pete. It is easy to be impressed with the humbleness of many of the Yankees. Rather than insulting opponents and making excuses for their own failures, many of our Yankees have the class to praise opponents (whether the Yankees win or lose), not gloat, and to take responsibility for losses as a team. Even without the championships, most of the Yankees play, talk, and live like true champions. Credit needs to go to Steinbrenner all the way down to the lowest person on the payroll.

We need to hope and pray that the girl is able to overcome her illness, a fight much more important than any sport.

  23. E-ROC

    CY Wang!

  24. Steve

In such tense game plays into play-off, It’s so warm to see a story like this. Wang did set a good example and made people fond of him. GO Yankees.

  25. CY Yang

I really appreciate Wang and many Yankees stars who did great charity work off the spotlight. It helps me to defend that professional sports games are not just about money… These pro athletes do have big hearts.

  26. Mei

    Thanks for the story, Pete.

  27. Grace

Just saw Stephen Liao’s article about the young girl.

Knowing taht she just pass the joint exam for senior high school this summer, and enrolled in the best girls’ senior high school (Taipei Municipal First Girls High School )in Taipei city, that’s a very tough school..

A lot of the kids who suffer diseases are very hardworking…

    Best wishes to her….

    Thank you PETE!
    !!

CMW is one of the unsung heros who puts others first. His quiet and respectful demeanor apparently carries over to his private life as well. I’m sure he is beloved in Taiwan and he should be – never a wrong step from this kid. How refreshing.

  34. Chueh

Halladay is a tough opponent.Wish Wang can do his best to help Yankees goal the American East Championship.

  35. JL

    This is great stuff Pete.

  36. saucy

Good story Pete. It is too bad she can’t stay for Friday’s game.

  37. EddieInTaiwan

Pete, this story is one of top stories in Taiwan today! By the way, the girl was from the best high school in Taipei. She must be very smart. Best wishes for her.

  38. Jenny Lin

As one of this blog’s loyal readers from Taiwan who never post a word here, I feel like it’s time to break the silence and say something — Great job, Pete. You’ll never know how much your reports on these little things about Wang have consoled and encouraged us in Taiwan. We know more about Wang by your articles. You are an important “Bridge” that connect us fans with Wang. Thank you and keep the good job!

  39. Kuan An Chiang

This is a very good story.

  40. YL

Not only people in Taiwan love your story, I do too. Thanks.

  41. Owen Lee

Thank you for the touching story ,many people in Taiwan have seen this .I also believe that many people will change the impression of the Yankees.

When Wang win, the people of Taiwan will be particularly emotional excitement.

    GO!Yankees!

  42. 筱佩

    很感動~
    洋基的員都好善良唷~!!

  43. Hou

I am one of the “silent readers” in Taiwan, but I
think this is a good chance for me to break the silence.
For years I know the Yankees are all really kind,
and I believe Wang just passes down the good tradition.
    Good for you, Wang!

  44. YankeeHater

Don’t let my name scare you. Wang turns my prejudice all the way around.

A nice guy and a lucky girl make a touching story. Make-a-wish foundation should have recorded the whole trip to make a good TV in a public channel to raise more money to help more kids in misfortunes.

  45. Angela

It’s so touching! I am a truly Yankees fan and can’t wait to see Yankees keeps winning!

  46. Taiwanese

    Thank you, PETE

  47. Taiwanese

    Thank you, WANGER

  48. Maggie

Thanks, Pete. Well, Wang didn’t win his 19th today. But he’s our forever hero no matter he wins or not.
