Role reversal in New York

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 20, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I’m listening to the Mets game while doing some work.

Two points:

1. Howie Rose and Tom McCarthy are excellent on WFAN.

2. Who could have imagined that on Sept. 20, the Mets would be playing a life-and-death game extra-innings game against the Florida Marlins and the Yankees would be sitting back smiling on their day off? Hopefully this season teaches everybody (again) that nothing is decided on Memorial Day.

These are going to be bad, bad times for Willie Randolph if the Mets choke. He likes to say he’s seen everything but that would be a new experience.

I feel bad for Willie. He lives fairly close to me…

Even so, I’d always much rather be a Yankees fan. Which is, coincidentally, why I am one…

  2. Dr. Acula September 20th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

USA Today says Big Papi may sit out Friday’s game (knee). Looks like they’re putting it all on Beckett.

  3. ShamDOG September 20th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

AMEN PETE!!! PROPS TO UR ESPN CAMEO

  4. YankeeJosh September 20th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

I like Howie Rose but his “put it in the books!” can get a bit annoying.

    Rebecca,

I like Willie but I grew up a Yankees fan in the 1980′s when the Mets were the team and 1986 scarred me. They can never lose enough for me.

    Acula,

Friday is big. Jays have the pitching edge (slightly) and with Beckett going, the Sox could get a game back. Hopefully not.

  5. gayle September 20th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

    Lets go Phillies!!

The big mystery is where is Billy Wagner

  6. Joe da man September 20th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

The Mets just lost. Phillies won theirs. This will be tough of that other NY team.

  7. Matty R September 20th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

Friday’s game is huge as you said YankeeJosh. Not only because the pitching duel, but also we have their next top 3 facing us and we don’t wanna fall behind in this series 0-1. Another big game is monday. With the Sawx off and the Yanks playing, we have a chance to clear that .5 game in the standings and keep things even.

  8. Dr. Acula September 20th, 2007 at 11:05 pm

    Yankeejosh,
You are so right, That 86 Mets team was the most unlikable team in history. I actually found myself rooting for the Redsox! That was a dark time in Yankee fandom. I hope I never live to see it happen again. Gary Carter, Ray (Suckerpunch) Knight…UGH…

  10. YankeeJosh September 20th, 2007 at 11:11 pm

    VOIII

It’s interesting, because I’ve found taht people around my age who grew up then hate the Mets more than the Sox, but those slightly younger or older tend to dislike the Sox more.

I admit I was rooting for the Red Sox then. No internet, and too many Met fans around. And my camp, little league etc always took trips to Shea and I wanted to see the Yankees!

  11. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 20th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

I was always a fan of Gary Carter and Nails Dykstra (until he got to Philadelphia), but I really didn’t like anybody else. I never liked Keith Hernandez except for the time that he was on Seinfeld.

  12. kd September 20th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

is there a youtube link for pete on espn?

  13. Let's go Philly September 20th, 2007 at 11:17 pm

    Mets. Love Them. LOL.

  14. Ed FL September 20th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

I am sorry for Willie Randolph. He was a fine Yankee and a gentleman.
Pete, like kd said, any youtube link?

  15. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 20th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

So now would be a bad time to mention that in October 1986 I was diaper wearing and bottle fed, all six months of me?

  16. Andrea - 27 in 07 September 20th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

KD: go to the post that Pete says he’ll be on ESPN and Dr. Acula posts a link where he posts the segment Pete is on.

  17. YankeeJosh September 20th, 2007 at 11:26 pm

    Rebecca,

Be glad you were spared the dark times. Though I do like breaking out the names of Yankees from that era when anyone suggests I’m a bandwagon fan.

Speaking of Yankees from that era, I was at one of the Yankee fanfests in the 1990′s and met The Count, John Montefusco. I told him that he was one of my favorites as a kid and he gave me a look and said I was still a kid. Apparently very sensitive about his age.

  18. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 20th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Willie Randolph is as sharp as a knife, he’s just had some bad luck. He does such a better job as manager for the Mets than Art Howe, Jeff Torborg, Dallas Green, and Bobby V among others from previous years.

  19. Deep to Left September 20th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

    Thanks Rebecca,

Just rub it in to the old guys. I’m old enough to remember that series quite well. It was my DAUGHTER who was diaper wearing and bottle fed. She was 11 months old at the time. :)

  20. gayle September 20th, 2007 at 11:30 pm

If we are going to talk 1986 this is the one and ONLY time that I rooted for the Red Sox as I was in college at Boston University and on top of going to a lot of games at Fenway that year being a tried and true Phillies fan it is against my nature to root for the Mets under any circumstances lol

  21. BryanK September 20th, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Pete link was posted by Dr. Acula in the Joba post.

  22. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 20th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

YankeesJosh: I was, but my older brother was 10 in 1990–the perfect age to remember the dark, dark years of the early 90s!

Deep to Left: Sorry, man, but it’s true! I’m a young one!

  23. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 20th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

There nearly weren’t any Red Sox in that ’86 series. The Angels and Donnie Moore were one strike away. What happened in the World Series definitely overshadows how Boston rose from the dead to oust them in the ALCS.

  24. randyhater September 20th, 2007 at 11:36 pm

    YankeeJosh & VoIII,

I hear you. I was a kid in the 80′s and hated the Mets way more than the Red Sox. People not old enough to remember will find it hard to believe, but the Mets friggin’ owned New York in those days and every housewife and cab driver wore one of those absurd dayglo blue hats with the orange NY. Boston was just a doormat franchise who we’d made a habit of wiping our feet on, and my personal hatred for them started when they choked away that Series. If anything, Toronto was the team that pissed me off the most in the AL.

  25. LCâ„¢ September 20th, 2007 at 11:41 pm

    Rebecca,
Don’t feel bad, I wasn’t born until late ’88 lol

  26. YankeeJosh September 20th, 2007 at 11:42 pm

    Randyhater,

You got it exactly right. That’s why no matter what I can never root for the Mets. The only times I do are when they are playing AL East opponents in the regular season. Last year I had to root for them against the Red Sox since we were in the division race.

Pre-1996, the highlight of my sports life was the Dodgers beating the Mets in the 1988 NLCS.

  27. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 20th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

It was funny to watch how many sorry teams that the Mets had in the early and mid ’90s. They changed managers every other year and had players like Bobby Bonilla and Vince Coleman who were hurt or past their primes.

  28. Ashley September 20th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

In October 1986 I was in my moms belly, lol.
I wasnt born until 5 months later.

LC it looks like you’re the youngest so far.

  29. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 20th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

    LC: You baby, you!

  30. yanksfanlv September 20th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

I was just a wee lad of 3 in 86. I didn’t even have a team until I moved to a new city in 96 and the first kid I met was a die hard fan.. well we all remember how 96 went and ever since then I have been die hard, pretty much bordering on obsession Yankee fan.

  31. Darrin September 20th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

I was never a Mets fan, but I’ve always hated the Red Sox more. To those unlucky ones who did not experience that 6th Game of the ’86 WS first hand….well there was nothing like seeing it live. Beyond doubt it was the most impossible ending I’ve ever seen. I mean, Boston could not possibly lose that game…and they did. Incredible.

  32. R.B. September 20th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

WFAN is must-listen radio these days.

I LOOOVE Goose Gossage. Here’s a quote from him on Joba from the Times:
“I saw him throw those two pitchers over Kevin Youkilis’s head when they played Boston. I loved it. The same thing used to happen with me when I tried to get it inside. When I missed, my body would get out front, my arm would lag and the ball would fly. And guess what? It was a great purpose pitch, only now they’re protecting these hitters every chance they get. It makes me sick. I went crazy when they tossed the kid that day. I screamed, ‘What the heck is this game coming to?’

You guys are making me feel real old. I’m going to take a Geritol and go to bed. I was a freshman at St. John’s… and skipped my classes and hang out in a friends basement in Queens… to watch Bucky Dent deposit his homer in the net at Fenway in the playoff game. Bill White… “Deep to Left!” OK… I’m going to grab my shawl and get some shuteye… dreaming about how we’ll be just a half game out 24 hours from now!

  36. Dr. Acula September 21st, 2007 at 12:11 am

    Deep to Left-

_You guys are making me feel real old._

Ya got any teeth left, DTL ??

  37. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 21st, 2007 at 12:11 am

    Dude, guys, get this:

*There is, currently, on Kansas City, a pitcher with the last name of Buckner, and the first name of Billy*

…Parents must be HUGE Mets fans…

  38. VOIII September 21st, 2007 at 12:23 am

    Why can’t I post??????

  39. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 21st, 2007 at 12:24 am

VOIII: I was having trouble the other day as well, but changing my name seemed to help.

  40. Darrin September 21st, 2007 at 12:27 am

Don’t feel too bad, Deep to Left. I also saw Bucky’s homer that day, though I was in elementary school not college ;)

When you mention Bill White, it makes me long for the days of those great announcers White, Messer and Rizzuto. It’s hard to believe that the Yankees once had announcers who did not say “It is high, it is far……etc..”

  41. VOIII (try again) September 21st, 2007 at 12:34 am

    Deep to left,
Those were great times. I became a Yankee fan in 75 and as a 9 year old watched them get Reggie and watch some of the most entertaining players of all time go to the series 3 times in a row…Didn’t develop the Hatred for the Sox until they got Pedro. Up to that point I just felt pitty for them. Will alway cherish the Bucky (F’ing) Dent HR….

  42. VOIII (try again) September 21st, 2007 at 12:37 am

I really started hating the Mets after they got Carter. That 86 team really burned my @$$…Watching the Yankees celebrate the 2000 championship on the Shea Stadium mound will always be one of my most cherished memories…

  43. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 21st, 2007 at 12:38 am

I got cheated out of Rizzuto.

I didn’t start following the Yankees in earnest until AFTER the ’96 season…

  44. VOIII (try again) September 21st, 2007 at 12:45 am

Scooter was the best….My wife only new him as the guy from the Money Store :) Anyone over 35 will know what I mean…

  45. fleas September 21st, 2007 at 12:51 am

    who says advertising doesn’t pay??

“I’m Phil Rizzuto from The Money Store..” Haven’t seen the commercial in over 25 years ..

but I can still see him in front of the glass windows while being broadcasted on WPIX (Channel 11)

  46. VOIII (try again) September 21st, 2007 at 12:54 am

Good advertising sticks wit you….Does this phone # ring a bell 226-0841? still remeber the jingle as if it were yesterday….

  47. RSM September 21st, 2007 at 1:24 am

This thread is awesome. The discussion brings back some great and some terrible memories. I grew up in the 70′s worshiping Reggie, and one of my closest friends was a huge Munson fan. We’d banter back and forth about who was more important to the team. Then my father would chime in and tell us how Mantle trumped them both, while my grandfather swore it was Joe-D that was the greatest. Unfortunately, those arguments ended abruptly when Munson died. We mourned for months.

FWIW, until the last decade I would have considered The Dodgers our biggest rivals given how many times we’ve faced them in World Series over the years.

The things I miss the most are from those days are: 1) A healthy Steinbrenner, and 2) The Scooter. Rizzuto was the best. My father had a store in Hillside, where The Scooter lived. People around there loved him, but always talked about how cheap he was. For all his fame, he was like a any regular guy. That’s lost today with how insane players salaries are. I remember Rizzuto’s Money Store commercials like they were yesterday. I think The Money Store and Crazy Eddie accounted for like 75% of the commercials on WPIX.

  48. JIm Clark September 21st, 2007 at 2:51 am

Good thing Rizzuto never leaned back and showed his belly like the fat slob “What’s the story, Jerry?”
I don’t hate this current batch of Mets players (Minaya signing a known cheat like Mota actually takes some heat off Cashman signing Juice Giambi) but that batch 20 years ago were slime. Except for Ed Hearn.
RSM: For years I always felt the same about the Dodgers. An extraordinary franchise under the O’Malleys: Alston and Lasorda for 45 years? The Yankees had something like 25 managers in the same time. Always wanted to play them in October..get revenge for being swept in 1963 (finally forgave Pepitone for losing Clete Boyer’s throw about 5 years ago) and now 1981. Now it doesn’t much matter. They still have Scully but that’s about it.

  51. Deep to Left September 21st, 2007 at 8:51 am

    Doreen,

Queens St. John’s. Only for a year though. Then I moved to Connecticut.

    Rebecca,

Getting cheated out of Rizzuto is the right way to phrase it. He was one of a kind. Just a great guy. He was born in Glendale, Queens, where I grew up… but obviously it was way before my time. My father and I did spot him in town once when I was a kid. I imagine he was visiting a friend or family member.

  52. Ellen September 21st, 2007 at 11:18 am

Great memories, guys! The Money Store and Crazy Eddie: “when you’re feelin’ ready, come down to Crazy Eddie …” An oldie but a goodie (at least until he went to prison and all!) :)

what’s funny, when you think about it, is that a lot of red-sox fans would probably be upset about that if they knew…
