Toronto shuts down Wells for season

Peter Abraham

Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells will miss the series this weekend. He will have shoulder surgery on Tuesday and has been shut down.

Wells is not having a good season (.245/.302/.402) but is formidable player, so that’s a break for the Yankees. Toronto does have its best starters lined up and is coming off a sweep of Boston, however.

Thanks to everybody who e-mailed saying they saw me on SportsCenter tonight. I didn’t start sweating like Albert Brooks in Broadcast News, so I considered it a success. It was good to be on with Dan Shaughnessy, a writer I have a lot of respect for.

Meanwhile, the coolest e-mail of the day came from Frank in Wollongong, Australia. He is a Yankees fan who gets his news from the web and reads the blog. He signed his e-mail, “Good energy, Frank.”

Good energy, I’ll take all of that I can get. Thanks for the e-mail, Frank.

Finally, the Yankees gave away a Jorge Posada poster at the game yesterday. If you have a kid who’s a Jorge fan, drop me an e-mail and I’ll happily send it your way.

UPDATE, 11:15 a.m.: The poster was given away. Sorry I only had one.

Just don’t forget us when you make it to the big time there Pete.

Only saw the clip from Dr. A, when I got back home. You did wonderfully!

Toronto will be tough, no doubt, but the Yankees are home and I am certain they can pull off the wins when they need to–you can’t believe they don’t want the division, not now that it’s so close.

    Peter-

Regarding your reader from Australia….I had a chance to live and work in Sydney for three years, if you ever get a chance to take a trip….do it. It is a spectacular nation with great people.

They also produce more than their fair share of MLBers for a country of 18m

Congrats Pete on the appearance. Wells is exhibit A on the perils of long term deals. I love him as a player, but when you are on a budget you cannot afford to have your marquee guy on the shelf or play hurt (which is what Vern has been doing). Being that the Yanks are not on a budget we don;t have those worries. Oh, how the other half lives….

I heard you on ESPN. I wasn’t watching but it was on in the background. I didn’t really hear it but I heard them thank Pete(r?) Abraham at the end of the segment and I was like ‘HEY!’. Congrats on the appearance.

OT: Average age of Yankee starters this series – 28.5 years old. That’s amazing considering Clemens has a start!

  6. eelz

graeme lloyd, ryan rowland smith, peter moylan– and watch out for adam gilchrist in a few years!

    Once again, congrats Pete :)

I can’t believe the Orioles took 2 our of 3 from the Blue Jays in Toronto, considering they barely made an effort here in New York and Toronto swept Boston :S

Anyone get a TV grab of the interview?

Didn’t catch you on SportsCenter Pete, but I’m sure you were great. I would have loved to have seen you on with Shaughnessy, I’m not a big fan of his, but my buddy did date his sister Mary for a brief stint. He met her the same night I met my wife at a little bar called Birds in Hollywood. Now I’ve got about two degrees of separation from you…small world.

I dont get this, all I hear is how formidable Toronto is (believe me I know they can pitch at times), yet they keep losing. Why? the offense isnt good and neither is the bullpen. hmm, I think I saw some good starts by the Yanks versus them and then some hits to break games open. Quick second looks at the same pitchers usually dont produce the same results. Pettitte and Wang on the their second recent starts vs Boston. Something tells me Ian and A. J. will not dominate the lineups again.

Most of the time, your assessment would be correct. However, Burnett has pitched against the Yanks twice this season and has been lights out both times.

Secondly, the Yanks haven’t beaten Halladay in 3 years and his lifetime record against them is something like 10-4. They’ve had just as much trouble with him over the years as they have Johan Santana.

It’s not that simple that the second time around the Yanks will pound these guys. Perennial Cy Young candidates like Halladay are always tough no matter how often you face him.

Burnett is a really good pitcher when he is on his game. McGowan is pretty good too and pitched well against the Yanks twice this season (although they did know him around last time).

If the Blue Jays can get their bullpen shaped up next season, they are going to be a formidable bunch indeed.

will pete be on in the morning edition of sportscenter too? i really wanted to see what espn wanted him to talk about…

    anyone have the clip online?

  13. Sema Lee

There is a recent article about the Blue Jays’ lack of offense:

  14. Woah

YES NO VERNON WELLS! THIS IS VERY GOOD NEWS :)

  15. Rob(Middletown, CT)

Not really. Wells has been terrible this year. The question is this: is the guy they will plug in to replace him better or worse than (the current, injured, edition of) Wells? I assume Rios will move to CF and they will play a prospect in RF?

  16. Bosco

I think they’ll most likely move Rios to CF and then play either Lind or Stairs in RF.

  17. E

However, we won’t have to worry about any trapped balls getting called as outs this time around.

There is 20 M of us now, BX 12. :) Glad you liked my home city – it is an awesome place, bet you know it pretty well after three years there.

Nice to know of more aussie Yankee fans, Frank from Wollongong (nearly called it The Gong, lol)

I think Grant “Ball 4″ Balfour from the DRay’s might be Australian too?

  19. Angel©

“and watch out for adam gilchrist in a few years!”

Haha, Eelz. Actually, he could probably hit a baseball pretty well, given the way he hits a cricket ball.

Re ‘the Yanks don’t have a budget.’ That idea is pushed 24/7 by those who wish to engender hatred and envy against the Yankees and the accomplishments of its individual players (they’re just on a team of rich guys getting it done”). The secondary gain is to steal more money from the organization and give it to lazy owners who aren’t required to say where a penny of it goes. There are enormous expenses, they operate at a loss, and various partners haven’t taken profits in years so more could be put into the team. To add someone to the roster at the present time for $10 million would cost an additional $4 million in luxury tax (as I understand it)to be sent to the plush offices of MLB, Inc. YES Network ownership is divided among a few parties and one or more of those parties may be shopping their shares. There are many factors, but I don’t see any sign they’re without a budget. This may not have been meant literally, but can be taken and run with.

  21. The D train

Toronto losing Wells hurts and they’ve recently lost Troy Glaus for the year also and both did damage to the Yankees in the past. Rios, Stairs, and Zahn shouldn’t be overlooked and their pitching is good. They won’t be facing a weak 5-9 hitters like they saw with Boston but they can still pitch.
This is a good chance for the Yankees to play under a playoff mode if treated as such.

  22. dmm

what is the yanks record vs toronto this year?

  23. ShawnChacon

Why do you have respect for Dan Shaughnessy? The man is a paid clown. You’re a better writer than him. And you’re a pretty bad writer, Pete.

    Find new heroes.
