I agree that the most important thing is making the playoffs, not winning the division.

However, anyone who doesn't think blowing a 14 1/2 game lead to the Yankees would not affect the psyche of the Red Sox organization doesn't understand the dynamic of the rivalry. It probably would affect the front office more more than the players.

The last thing Larry Luchino or Theo Epstein wants is to have their team blow a seemingly insurmountable lead to the Yankees. Especially if the Yanks beat the Red Sox in the ALCS in the last inning of a game in Yankee Stadium that could have been played in Fenway but for the collapse. This scenario would be their worst nightmare. The Red Sox incessant anti-Yankee media blitz would have to come to a grinding halt.

The Red Sox are smart and use their anti Yankee propaganda machine to promote and merchandise their team. It's pretty hard to use that strategy when you're team has embarrassed itself against the Yankees.

Still think we lost to Detroit series last year because Game 2 was rained out (I was there until 10 before they called it), and the game was played the next day dring the afternoon. The Stadium is so much more intimidating and alive at night. The day they played was much like today-- beautiful and not a cloud in the air. The Yankees-- and their fans-- are not as jacked up as at night. Heard Jeter make that comment about Game 2 as well (though he was not making excuses).

No matter what the year, no matter who is on the team, we always end up being stifled by some dog sh*t pitcher. Amazing.

PB in DC ...you are assuming that we don't have a shot to either with the division all the way up until the last game of the season NOR do we have a shot to be a #2 or #1 seed either. My 2 cents is that we will....Have a great day, though....I will keep projecting positive and keep the OPTIMISM flowing,,,NEVER SAY DIE !!!

Glad we got a bad game out of the way before the playoffs. I would expect a couple down games 16-17 game tear the team's been on (including the weekend's tough games) which is why I was hoping they wouldn't finish the season on a 21-4 run and go right into the playoffs.

Magic number for a playoff berth is so close I think it'll be OK to take it easy for a couple days. They still have to win to clinch, and can't screw around so much they forget how to play.

I'm not worried about a struggling in a couple meaningless games this week if it helps the team get ready for the meaningful ones next week. Our boys are a game or two away from playing in October, which was more than we could have expected 4 months ago.
