Statement from George Steinbrenner
Spokesman Howard Rubenstein released this statement attributed to George Steinbrenner:
“I’m elated we have clinched the playoff spot.
After a tough first half of the season when everyone seemed to lose faith except for our players and our fans, the team has really stepped up and shown themselves to be the champions that they are. With hard work and determination, we were able to clinch a playoff position and are now heading into our 13th consecutive postseason.
I congratulate our players, Joe Torre, and Brian Cashman. I really like the mix of veterans and younger players who have contributed to this comeback. It has been exciting to watch them play, coalesce and pull together. The fans and I look forward to the team accomplishing our ultimate goal — bringing a world championship back to New York.”

Here Here I agree
Please tell Howard Rubenstein that the serial comma isn’t necessary.
No thank you George for believing in this team !
That statement says it all! Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner!!
Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner!
Here’s to 27 in ’07
I too love how this team coalesced as the season went on. Gotta love the statements from the Boss.
Thank you for being a wonderful owner George!
Yankees are just the best. Class and Professional. Gotta love the heart this year.
I hope The Boss is feeling better and I’m sure he’s a happy camper tonight, but I can guarantee these are not all his words.
Judging by the AP photos taken of him tonight, he doesn’t look great.
Agreed. From what I hear, those words aren’t George’s. I hear stuff from Tampa, and what I hear about George’s health isn’t good.
Off to October….
Gotta reverse the bad mojo. Last time the Yankees were wild carders was way back in ’97 against these same Cleveland Indians.
Yanks cannot fall into the same trap as they did against the Tigers last year. Domination in the regular season means absolutely nothing now, and Cleveland is playing terrific ball.
I live for the Steinbrenner Missive, even though I have my doubts that he wrote this one. He is a larger than life owner, cartoonish and legendary at the same time. Probably the last of a breed given the amount of corporate ownership and corporate mentality in baseball today. I hope he is truly well and can enjoy this moment.
Now, 20 years ago, I could have never imagined I would say that.
That said, our work is not done. Cleveland or Anaheim matters not.
This team will not be denied.
Carl Pavano steals money again according to the Times in talking about the players meetiong to determien shares a player who has spent at least 5.5 months on the major league ropster or DL automatically gets a full share. What a gig this guy has.

You know it.
Anybody got a link to those AP photos of Big Stein?
Anyway, it’s good to hear from him even if those might not be his words…
Nevermind found them with a quick search.

He’s looking better than last time I’ve seen a photo(ST). What do I know though?
Theme music to “Patton” should be played to accompany Steinbrenner missives.
I’m still laughing at Giuseppe Franco’s name. God I hate Procede commercials.
Thanks Boss.
George is still a larger then life character after all these years. His words still carry a great deal of weight among the Yankee faithful. Good to hear from him and better he was able to see the game tonight in person.
The Rajah of Rehab (remember that one?) should donate his playoff share to a children’s hospital or the Jimmy Fund or some other worthy recipient…IMHO.
Wow, that picture of Steinbrenner is very telling, he really doesn’t look like he’s all there. That’s sad, I’ve always liked George.
I guess we’re getting closer to finding out what George said to Roger so many months ago. That’s part of why I believe Clemens will rise up one last time and help bring home the ring.

.
We may not go 96-66 as I have been typing a lot. We may not even face the BoSux…, but this team IS gonna win one more for The Boss and Mr. T. Congrats to ya, Yankees.
George’s actual statement:
“I want some Yankee Beans…”
George actually looked better than I expected in those photos given all the news about his condition. He was well enough to interact with the fans at least – I expected him to quietly come and go from the stadium.
I hope we can bring home #27 for him this year. He more than deserves it.
Steinbrenner is the man, but one thing chaps me about him:
Can he at least give one tv interview or leaving the ballpark appearance before this year’s end? He’s basically getting a brand new ballpark with all the bells and whistles for virtually nothing, so the least he could do is make an appearance of some kind. I know we all nickname him “King George” but he really isn’t a king, so he should stop acting like one. He’s lucky N.Y.C. isn’t one of those cities who say “You pay for it” and believe me, his product would’ve fallen wayyy down in price had he moved the team to NJ (then they wouldn’t be the New York Yankees or the Yankees anymore, change the name). N.Y.C. had all the leverage to tell him to pay for the whole shebang or a much, much bigger chunk of the bill. He’s obviously not bedridden, an invalid, or demented (as one article Peter posted about on here intimated George is).
Yes, he’s always been front and center and I understand he’s not in the best of health in recent times from what I’ve read, but since he was healthy enough to show up at the Trop’ last night and/ or meet with Torre, he should be good to go to say a few words to the press even if it’s as he’s about to enter his limo. It just comes off regal and flippant more than eccentric.
I don’t mean to come off like I’m getting on George, but I’m a little annoyed at the “George as an unseen prescence” thing.
Not sure what you are talking about???
The Yankees are paying for their own stadium. The city is only paying to improve access and parking around the stadium.
I completely understand why The Boss isn’t doing interviews these days.
Clearly, he is not in good health and you can see it in the AP photos.
If the guy isn’t well enough to attend the postgame celebration, I think that is a pretty good indication that he isn’t exactly feeling energetic these days.
I tend to believe that his “people” don’t want him in front of a camera as much as anybody. If he doesn’t look or sound good, it’s obvious why they would shy away from that kind of publicity.
“After a tough first half of the season when everyone seemed to lose faith except for our players and our *fans*”
i guess he doesn’t read this blog.
george is the man…i hope he is able to enjoy the quest for 27 in 07…Go Yanks
