Scenes from a celebration

captc6ec43932a5142029f3d9e92a38b61a0yankees_devil_rays_baseball_spd127.jpgThe celebration was far more wild than expected. But with so many young players on the roster, there was a lot of alcohol being sprayed. Shelley Duncan and Brian Bruney were among the wildest along with Melky Cabrera and Robbie Cano.

The funniest thing came near the end. Chris Britton took a shower and was back at his locker when Bruney dumped a beer over his head. So Britton needed another shower.

(Name deleted) is going to have a major dry cleaning bill, by the way. Hope YES pays for it.

Doug Mientkiewicz was the smartest guy in the room as he put on some swim goggles to keep the champagne out of his eyes.

Joe Torre, as you would imagine, was very emotional. He spoke to the team for a few seconds before Derek Jeter grabbed him. As the celebration died down, he came out of his office and spoke to a few of the beat writers who have been around the team.

He mentioned Mike Mussina, who lost his spot in the rotation only to win it back. To Torre, how Mussina handled that setback was a symbol for what happened to the team.

“That was special,” he said.

Mussina, who is not a party guy, celebrated with his teammates a bit then grabbed a beer and sat in Torre’s office with the coaches. The hard feelings are forgotten, there are more games to play now.

Then there was this quote from Alex Rodriguez:

“This feels like home. It’s hard to believe that I played for another two organizations. So much has happened to me here, adversity, some success, that I feel like anything but New York feels weird for me now.”

Here is some audio:

I sure hope Torre comes back next year, along with A-Rod, Posada, Rivera.

  2. rbizzler

Thanks Pete. The insight is greatly appreciated, especially from fans who happen to call places other than the NY metro area home.

    Here’s to a fantastic postseason….

  3. MJL

    Don’t leave, Alex.

  4. Dan

Wow, great quote from A-rod. Seems like he’s going to stay after all.

Also, its interesting to see how the different players partied. You have to respect Mike Mussina for his attitude during the latter half of the season.

Also, did Britton have his pinstriped bathrobe on?

  5. Jim Clark

You never get tired of winning.

  6. eelz

    thank you peter

  7. Bob

    Tomorrow nights final score:

    TB: 25
    NYY: 0

    LOL

Party on guys you earned it.

  8. Stuart

I 2nd Moose’s class under the adversity and his ability to stick to it and turn things around. he is a peculiar guy, very smart and prickly but showed some real determination and class in how he handled his demotion and his recent turnaround…

The young guys made a big difference this yr. you can hear it in Torre’s words or the vets.. Duncan, melky, cano, hughes, joba, nad others really gave the team new life and energy.

Congrats… No matter how much money you have they do not give you the wins. 7 yrs of 90 or more wins in a row and 13 yrs. in a row in the playoffs those are historic #’s and they were buried at 21 and 29 and things looked bleek. they traded for no big names they added guys from there own system and got Betemit in a trade that was it..I also forgot they got Clemens who helped for sure but is a bit player at present……………………………

Steinbrenner looked old and different in the pictures to bad, he is a hard guy and all that stuff but at the end of the day he wants one thing to bring championships to NY, is that a bad thing???\\\\\\\\

Torre still mismanages the pen and refuses to pitch Mariano on the road in a tie game and that is not real smart but the players love him and he is class all the way..

  9. Brandon

Alex we’re going to tie you down to that locker, you aren’t going nowhere !!! ;)

  10. Kill-Schill(ing)

Please God forgive me for quoting Richard Nixon but I thought all of you might appreciate the following quote from his Farewell Address.

*”The greatness comes not when things go always good for you, but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes; because only if you’ve been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.”*

  11. IPPG

Where is Wang? Was he not invited to the party after winning the game?

  12. Jim Clark

I grew up in the CBS years. I know all about deepest valleys and highest mountains.

  13. JoeT YANKEES

Thanks Pete – any other pictures?

I’m in Florida and the Rays coverage well, doesn’t deserve to be called coverage, after the game they went to comercial and when they came back they were talking about Carlos Pena’s homerun.. I wish MLB.TV wouldn’t get blacked out when they play TB

  14. JeterForPresident

When Mo was being interviewed by Kim Jones, Cano was lurking behind him and looked like he was already wasted. I’m glad the kids had fun, but I have faith in Torre to let everyone know that this is just the first step in the process.

  15. CaptainsCorner

As Borowski blows his 2nd save in a row. It looks like he is getting ready for the post season and the Yankee bats.

  16. Brandon

Pete why is this the 1st time I’m hearing the 2007 catch phrase is *ENERGY* ?

  17. G. Love

That quote from Arod is awesome. I hope he’s being genuine and I hope he listens to heart instead of Boras for the first time in his life. The Yankees will give him tons of money and he’ll set records and always be remembered as a Yankee from here on in.

Just like his quote said, it’s almost starting to feel like he never played for Texas and Seattle. There’s nothing wrong with spending the rest of your career as a Yankee and I’m happy to see him admit that much.

  18. Sherri

Pete, Thank you so much for everything you do!! It means so much the insight you provide to us on a daily basis.

To A-Rod – WE LOVE YOU, MAN!!!! DON’T GO ANYWHERE!!!
A-Rod quote: “I love New York!”

TOUGH ALL DAY!!!!!!! HERE WE COME, OCTOBER!!!

  20. Thomas

Mussina is not a party guy. Thats so him. Hahahaha, I know these Yankees players better than a lot of my friends. Sad.

  21. corsari

October here we come! Great job by the team to overcome an abissmal start of the season. The team absolutely earned this playoff spot.

    I HOPE THAT A-ROD STAYS.
HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT MONEY TALKS AND 3RD BASEMEN WALK.
IN THE EVENT A-ROD GOES WEST, I HEAR THERE’S A PLUCKY , YOUNG 3RD BASEMAN ACROSS TOWN WHOSE TALENTS ARE BEING WASTED RIGHT NOW!

The one major thing I learned from being a part of this blog: Don’t trust the people who don’t want Torre back another season.

We were 14.5 games back, people! Now we’re going to the playoffs! October was meant for the Yankees.

  28. hmmm

“We were 14.5 games back, people! Now we’re going to the playoffs! October was meant for the Yankees.”

when were the Yankees 14.5 back from the wildcard?

  29. Drew

We were only 9 1/2 out of the Wild Card, but that is still remarkable given the fact that we had to pass several teams along the way.

  30. rover

torre didn’t make all the people happy all of the time. probably won’t ever do that. but now at the least, we have our chance. there are a lot of heroes on this, team, torre is one of them.
someone said this may have been joes finest job, i cannot disagree with that.
    go yanks

  31. Denise G

    Rover,

I believe it is not Torre’s job to be popular and make everyone happy during the season; see Terry Francona…

At the helm as Manager, you have a job to do and sometimes that means hurting feelings, demoting a player that he been there for you in the past but is dreadful now…etc.

It’s a tough job and not done well by many – we’ve got a great one, JOE TORRE.

we can work on the bullpen issue!

  32. Sara

Now the real Yankee season begins!!!!!!

  33. Yankees Chick

torre truly is one of a kind. say what you will about his “hard” managerial skills – there is not another manager in the game that connects to his players the way he does, and that is just so great to watch.

i will admit, i teared up watching torre get emotional last night!

  34. Ronald

That quote from Arod is awesome. I hope he’s being genuine and I hope he listens to heart instead of Boras for the first time in his life. The Yankees will give him tons of money and he’ll set records and always be remembered as a Yankee from here on in.

With summer rapidly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about sun, fun, swimming pools, beaches and water sports.
the first item on your checklist should be swimming goggles, summer is coming and the bikini-girl is waiting for me, so……..

I need a swimming goggle, is anyone knows this website?

IMO , it is very cheap
