Soak up the champagne, there’s a game

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Sep 27, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Powered by a fine night out in Tampa, onto the day after the celebration …

Chien-Ming Wang became the first Yankee to have back-to-back 19-win seasons since Tommy John in 1979-80. Since World War II, only Wang, John, Vic Raschi (1948-51) and Mel Stottlemyre (68-69) have accomplished that.

Doug Mientkiewicz is 14 of his last 28 with 6 runs, 5 walks, 5 extras and 8 RBI. Meet your starting first baseman for Game 1.

The Yankees have six players with 71 or more RBI (A-Rod, Matsui, Abreu, Cano, Posada, Jeter) and seven with 90 or more runs (A-Rod, Abreu, Jeter, Matsui, Posada, Damon, Cano). What a relentless lineup.

No word yet on the postseason roster and don’t expect one until the deadline. There is no upside to revealing it early.

Back later with what is sure to be an interesting lineup.

List of things Yankee fans can use as Sox-bashing ammo:

    -Papelbon’s fist pumps-
    -Rookies dressing in costumes-
    -wildcard celebrations-
-The pic of Theo being sprayed in the mug with champagne in ’04-

    It’s been a good month.

  2. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Terrific stat up above showing that Wang is the first Yankee with consecutive 19 win seasons since Tommy John. 19 wins is tougher than ever these days. Wang is as solid as a rock.

  3. aghhhh September 27th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

Anyone have anything to say about the “Yankees, Gone Wild” celebrations which would never, ever happen because they are too classy to celebrate the wild card? I imagine there are some choice quotes from 2004 as well.

It must be tough for the NYYFans crowd these days. Unless something changes in a hurry they will enter the playoffs with nothing to play for. They have stated with much vim and vigor that a WS title via the wildcard is meaningless. Man, I will feel sorry for them when they have to abandon the season on Oct 1.

I’ll bet Torre, Cashaman and the team told Big Stein they won the World Series. Hell, he wouldn’t know the difference, he dies happy and everyone gets a bonus.

    It’s really a win-win.

I had the game on Tues. for a little while, and the entire time Kay was ranting about how home-field advantage isn’t a big deal at all in baseball, that it didn’t particularly matter, that the Yankees could win anywhere, theoretically, that it was more important in hockey/ basketball…

It would have been an interesting take from someone who was arguing this in the abstract in May, for example. Coming from Michael Kay on YES as the Yankees stare down being on the road through the AL playoffs… has a different ring to it.

    From Sosh….

  4. Don V. September 27th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Its a lucky 7 for both Runs and RBI – Melky also has 71 RBI.

  5. adkwriter September 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

I wonder if Torre will let a senior player be the manager on Sunday

  6. Tony Gicas September 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

Leche has 71 RBI too, Pete

  7. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Michael Kay is a moron. Not even Yankee fans take him seriously.

Just think, Wang has 19 wins and he was on the DL for the first month or so of the season. Imagine if he started the season on time!

  8. Ashley September 27th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Hey Tony Gicas you read my mind, lol
I was going to tell Pete that too.

Except I was going to say Hey pete you forgot my man Melky, he has over 70 RBI’s!!

  9. rbizzler September 27th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Is this what you guys are doing on SOSH? I thought you and ‘Big(ger) Schill’ used it as a forum to debate the nuances of Everquest. Enjoy your first round flameout….

  10. Doreen September 27th, 2007 at 3:55 pm

In my mind, Pettitte should have 20 wins this season, or close to it, also. In the beginning of the season, he just didn’t get any run support (nor in his last game). He could easily have had 5 more wins. Ah, but such is baseball.

  11. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

The Yankees may see an extra bit of Scott Kazmir tonight. Kazmir is six strikeouts behind Johan Santana for the AL lead. I had no idea that he was second in K’s. The last quote from Pete was funny to me- “back later with what is sure to be an interesting lineup!”

  12. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

I don’t know about you, but right now it feels so much better than it did last year, because we clinched by winning, and not by Detroit losing.

We’ve done this on our own.

Oh, and that 48-24 second half record?

    In 1998, we went 54-28.

    48-24 = 0.667 winning percentage.
    54-28 = 0.659

Unless I can’t do math (which, unfortunately, is a distinct possibility), we’ve just knocked the socks off of 1998.

I wonder if anyone’s realized that?

  13. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

(that was copy/pasted from my blog)

  14. Stephen September 27th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

    aghhhh,
The Yanks don’t even need any Sox-bashing ammo, because the “Sports Illustrated” curse is on. Or, at least we can hope it is.

    Good night, Paps.

SOSH is a Red Sox forum.

  18. ray(sox fan) September 27th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

    I could be mistaken….but I think Damon only has 60 rbi’s….not over 90.

  19. Doreen September 27th, 2007 at 4:13 pm

Ray – Damon has 90 runs scored, not batted in.

  20. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Ray- Pete said that Damon has scored over 90 runs, not driven in 90. His average isn’t as high as usual, but he’s still a good table-setter for the rest of the lineup.

  21. Sara September 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm

ray Damon has over 90 runs scored.

  22. mel September 27th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

    Found this interesting blog article:

    http://community.foxsports.com....._Ring_True

  23. ray(sox fan) September 27th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Thank you all for the clarification…..sorry about that…guess I got confused!

  24. mel September 27th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Micah Owings filled in for Brandon Webb today. He threw 6+ shutout innings AND went 4-for-4 with 3 doubles, 3 rbi’s. That’s pretty impressive.

  25. VT Yankeefan September 27th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Read the passage again. Damon is is in the list of 7 guys with over 90 runs scored, not RBI’s. A-rod, Abreu, Cano, Matsui, Posada, and the captain on both the 70 RBI and 90 run lists. Not to shabby I’d say. Bring on the post-season.

  26. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Hey, what happened to Joel, that Tigers fan from yesterday that proclaimed that the Yankees would lose 4 in a row and the Tigers would win 4 in a row and win the Wild Card?

Poor chap. He must be sad :P

  27. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Andrea–Think he feels bad? Think about how Steve Phillips must feel!

  28. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Eh. Steve Phillips can suck it.

  29. Sara September 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Rebecca..we still have 4 games to play!

  30. ray(sox fan) September 27th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

    Andrea
I can appreciate that you are wondering what happened to Joel. In the same vein I am wondering what happened to Vito who made tons of predictions about the Sox losing to Oakland…the Yankees going undefeated the rest of the season, and insisting that the Yankees would win the division.

  31. Bob Michaels September 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Vic Raschi was known as the Springfield Rifle( Mel Allen)

  32. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:32 pm

Sara: That was me. I meant 5. I was thinking in my head 4 games left today, the kid said 5 games ina row yesterday. I thought no one would catch it. You people catch everything!

  33. The D train September 27th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

    Andrea :

Joel has returned to Bellevue where his computer privileges have been denied. He expects to be released in time to go to Lakeland, Florida in March of ’08 where the Tigers train.

  34. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

understandable ray….as much as we appreciate Vito’s optimism, I’m not sure any of us *really* take his “predictions” seriously. But in his defense, at least he says all that stuff on a Yankees board, and doesn’t (to my knowledge) go onto Red Sox boards or Tigers boards saying that stuff.

If he does, not gonna lie, that’s pretty foolish. We all would have loved to see the Yankees (well, not you obviously) finish 96-66, I don’t think any of us thought it would happen.

  35. mel September 27th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

    ray,

That’s actually funny. Sticks and stones. Nice try, but the opinions of Red Sox fans don’t bother us here one bit because the Yankees were down, but definitely not out.

  36. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:37 pm

So, let me get this straight…The Sox are going to the playoffs, which are right around the corner, yet their devoted fans would rather Yankee-bash on a Yankees blog then commune on a Sox blog and rap about their team’s bid for the WS title? That’s very telling of the mindset of your average Sox troll… Pathetic!!! Get your priorities straight, please!

  37. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

This ray is actually not a troll (unless a troll has stolen his name). He usually comes on here to actually have a discussion with Yankee fans.

  38. Gayle September 27th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

yes somewhere along the way we lost the Seattle Trolls (they made a very brief appearance) as well as the Tiger ones. The red Sox ones will be here for a bit longer I am sad to report.

  39. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Andrea – Yeah, and Pedro and Zimmer were simply having a little play-fight a few years back! Give me a break…Sox fans who want to have a “discussion” on a Yankees blog. Don’t believe the hype…

  40. ray(sox fan) September 27th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

    Andrea
I certainly understand a fan wanting their team to do well and to be optimistic about it. I actually think it is cool how many fans on here support their team the Yankees with the spirit of optimism and the talk about the squirrel! My issue with Vito was not his optimism, but his trash talking in the extreme….putting down other Yankee fans that didn’t agree with him…saying outlandish things about other teams….and guaranteeing that his predictions would come true. That type of approach constitutes being a “Yankee troll” and most definitely attracts troll comments from other people.

  41. mel September 27th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

I’m sure the others here will agree with me when I say that we’re sorry that Vito offended you. Since he’s our village idiot (no offense Vito!) I’ll apologize on his behalf. Sorry about that.

  42. will September 27th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

    chi dave,
Ray’s actually not a troll. he came on and congratulated us on making the playoffs. he’s a baseball fan who happens to like the redsox. it doesn’t speak much for his taste, but he’s not a troll. much more civil than most of our fellow yankee fans were earlier today here.

  43. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Guys (and girls) – Please stop apologizing to Sox fans (for Vito or anything else, for that matter). You’re making me ill. I suppose you’re going to be wringing your collective hands for “aghhhh” next…

Remember that you are Yankees fans and this is a Yankees blog. Vito is also a Yankees fan. ‘Nuff said…

  44. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

Chicago Dave: I actually have had some discussions with this particular person (unless there’s multiple people people named ray who are sox fan and also reasonable on here?) and he’s not a troll. Never does the troll thing. If his intnetions are malicious, he doesn’t show it.

ray: I typically skip over the troll comments, so I really don’t have any idea what they say most of the time. Once or twice I’ve gotten sucked in, but for the most part, I haven’t really read them, so I really don’t know what a “troll” comment is, but Vito seems to get the brunt of it. I got trolled once though. Someone pretended to be me and posted a not-so-nice picture. It was weird! I don’t really even say anything, and I got trolled. Weird. So as a Sox fan, are folks in RSN panicking as much as people here seem to think they are? or since the lead is back up to 3 with 4 left to play, is it all good?

  45. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

P.S. – Fine, Ray is a fine fellow…Have it your way. Still, do we really need to be apologizing to him? Think about it…

  46. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Andrea, I would NEVER go to any other team’s blog, let alone on a Tigers or BoSux….And just to make a point…how would my 96-66 prediction be looking right now, if the Yankees had not basically LAID DOWN for the last game of the Blue Jays series and the 1st game here at Tampa ?…We would be sitting 93-65, only one game out of the division lead with 4 games left against bottom dwellers Tampa and Baltimore and Boston having to play Minnesota and Oakland. I would THINK that the Yankees would have made that PUSH to win the division at that time, and 96-66 would have only required a 3-1 over the last 4 games…oh, and Ray…I’m right here, PAL….waiting with GREAT anticipation to see IF your beloved BoSux can even make it to the ALCS, because the Yankees WILL be there waiting for your sorry excuse for a team to continue it’s mediocre 2nd Half play into the Playoffs. The BoSux Idiots MAY be able to ride their 36-15 start into a Division Championship Playoff Berth, but your sorry team has Nothing, likely for LAA, but even if they scrape by them…there is not a Yankee Player that doesn’t know that they totally have The (total joke ) Nation’s number this year. Look at the Yankees record against your Losers lately, pal. Pretty sad, your collection of stiffs are. I truly hope the Yankees get the chance to MASH on the Idiots in the ALCS…although I totally doubt that BOS has the heart to even win more than one game in the ALDS. Here I am, Ray…right here, pal. You got something for me ???

  47. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Hey, and what about them Yanks?! Which regulars will play tonight? Guesses anyone?

  48. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

oh,,and Ray…a troll is someone that goes to ANOTHER team’s blog and trash talks….this is a Yankees blog…if you dont’ like it, go away !….Mel, thanks for the Village Idiot comment ( not too worried about it though )…Outlandishly yours……Vito…

  49. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

Vito: I assumed you’d never got on another blog. I don’t go on other blogs though, so I wouldn’t be able to say for sure. You’re excited, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We like your enthusiasm, whether I totally think your predictions are possible or not. By the way, what happened to your crazy name with the symbols? it makes me nevous that you’re not you without them…

  50. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

I predict you’ll see The Attorney General and Betemit starting side-by-side on the left side of the infield at some point in the next four games (maybe even more than once).

On another note, I know the Yanks need to rest their regulars, but if they put the “C” lineup out there against Kazmir tonight it could get ugly real fast. I realize we have now clinched a playoff spot, but I still hope we don’t tank the remaining regular season games.

  51. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

I’d love to see Sardinha and the Former Attorney General get a start!

  52. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

Chi Dave: above, someone said they heard Shelley Duncan would be starting in RF. So I guess that means Abreu rests.

  53. mel September 27th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

    Vito,

I definitely said it with affection and with tongue in cheek.

  54. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Andrea ….a simpleton Troll just used cut and paste to impersonate me with the symbols too….Let the trolls have their fun. They are truly sad people and living on borrowed time anyHOO. Also, when BoSux are eliminated early and the Yankees win the WS…then he who laughs last….

  55. yankeefan September 27th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

W00H00! here’s to the best team the past 4 months! and here’s to the best fans for continuously believing! i don’t care who we play, i’m confident it will be a great postseason!

  56. Jake S September 27th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Would you all shut up please? A troll is someone who posts comments for the sake of stirring up a reaction. Ray is not doing this. End of story. Stop running away all the Sox fans, it’s nice not to be a completely insular community.

  57. Jake S September 27th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Also, using BoSux is about as dumb as calling the Yankees the Spankees or something stupid like that. Are you five?

  58. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

And another thing…I think it’s unfair that the Yanks called up the likes of Chase Wright and Matt DeSalvo for the end of the season, but not Wil Nieves. Yes, he sucks, but he honestly did more for us (relatively speaking…even if he didn’t hit a lick he still caught a bunch of innings) than either of those guys. So, I (for one) he deserved a token start or two once we clinched (i.e. now!).

  59. Jake S September 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

What did Wil Nieves do for us exactly? Besides suck a lot, I mean.

  61. Gayle September 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pm

On the Nieves thing here is a question because he is out of options if they had called him up would that effect anything. remember when they demoted him last time he was automatically on wiavers being as he was out of options.

  62. Felipe from Brazil September 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

“That type of approach constitutes being a “Yankee trollâ€? and most definitely attracts troll comments from other people.”

humm, maybe it’s just me but I tought that a yankee fan couldn’t be trolling a yankee blog… except you can prove Don Vito was trolling around some bosux site you can’t point your finger at him…that’s ridiculous.

  63. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Jake S: Wil Nieves was well-liked among the pitchers. That’s a big deal.

Chi Dave: I think that Chase Wright and Matt DeSalvo were still on the 40 man roster and Wil Nieves wasn’t. I THINK. I’m not sure there’s a way to check now. That might be why. And Chase Wright was part of the championship winning Trenton Thunder, so it was part of his and Tyler Clippard’s reward.

  64. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:04 pm

Jake S. – I guess you don’t remember the games he caught, thereby allowing the Yanks to give Jorge a rest. Furthermore, if you add up the innings Nieves caught versus the innings Wright and DeSalvo pitched, it’s no contest.

I already said Nieves sucked, but you’re missing the point… Torre said they called up guys like Wright and DeSalvo to “thank” them for filling in. Well, Nieves essentially “filled in” the second catcher spot until Molina arrived, and, again, he gave the Yanks a lot more innings of play than either Wright or DeSalvo…

So, the point is simple…If Wright and DeSalvo deserved a “thank you” call up, then so did Nieves.

  65. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Gayle – If what you’re saying is true, then I guess I can see why they didn’t call him up. Still, my argument was more about the general principle of the thing…

  66. Todd Drew September 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

    Chicago Dave,
I think the Yankees would have loved to carry three catchers through September, but Wil Nieves is not on the 40-man roster and they couldn’t clear room for him without exposing someone to waivers.

  67. Gayle September 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Just looked it up Andrea is correct Will is NOT on the 40 man roster

  68. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

Everyone’s being a little bit snarky tonight.

I think we all need to take a deep breath and count to 3 and think this….

THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!

  69. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Ahh, poor Nieves…screwed by a technicality!!!

  70. Luigi 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

nieves is not on the 40 man roster, for him to have been called up someone would have had to been DFA’d

i dont see one person worth cutting on the 40 man roster for wil freakin nieves

  71. S.o.S.27 September 27th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

    Jake S,

I agree, Nieves was well liked by his teamates and all but didnt contribute on the field what so ever. Every game I watched him,the opposition was running wild on him. Im fine if the backup cant hit, but at least help out on the defensive end. I dont think he did anything to warrent him being on the roster.

  72. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Andrea – “Snarky”…I like that word. Kudos to you for using it effectively!

  73. Stephen September 27th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    Chicago Dave,

I think it does Nieves a disservice to call him a fill-in. He won the job legitimately in spring training, and Cashman said that many senior pitchers had called him during spring training and the regular season to say how much they liked working with him and hoped he’d stay with the team.

He may not have been the best choice, but he was hardly a fill-in.

  74. Doreen September 27th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

Could it be we all stayed up late watching the clubhouse celebration, and then, since we were up anyway, catch at least a little of Larry David on Centerstage?? Thus, not getting the necessary beauty sleep resulting in the overall snarkiness? :)

  75. Luigi 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

nice guys dont win you ballgames

  76. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Chi Dave: someone else used it the other day and I decided to integrate it into my vocabulary.

  77. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

OK, I think everyone is officially missing the spirit of my argument now. Suffice to say, I’m not asserting that Wil Nieves was the second coming of Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Bill Dickey, Thurman Munson, or even Jorge Posada. Also, I’m not saying they should have DFAed someone else to put him back on the roster. (Well, maybe I take that back…I would have gladly dumped Bruney or Farnsworth for a bag of balls!). It was just a simple idea, really… But perhaps I was being too cerebral. Forget it, OK?

P.S. – Chase Wright and Matt DeSalvo also suck. Can we all agree on that, at least?

  78. Bronxie Brenda September 27th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Seeing the Yankees in the postseason as usual – - terrific.

Listening to John Kruk, Steve Phillips, Mike Lupica et al backpeddling – - priceless.

  79. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:16 pm

Chicago Dave: I do not agree. Chase Wright was pretty good against Cleveland and was pretty good against Boston until “the incident,” and then they never gave him another chance. Matt DeSalvo was great against Seattle and had some other good starts. He was awful out of the bullpen and awful his second time he was called up, and I’m blaming confidence. I also have a giant crush on him.

There’s something about those 2, and I think they could be good. I’m not ready to give up on them. I have no confidence in Tyler Clippard, however.

  80. mel September 27th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Since you guys are talking about Nieves and his status:

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....8;c_id=nyy

The bit about Nieves is in the Bombers bits at the bottom.

Check out A-rod’s quotes about joining the Yankees’ 150 RBI Club in the main article.

  81. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

For all of you Nieves fans today:

(from yankees.com) – Bombers bits: Wil Nieves, who made the Opening Day roster as a backup catcher, has been working out in Tampa just in case the Yankees need a catcher in an emergency option during the playoffs. Nieves said that he can become a Minor League free agent Oct. 1 but will delay his decision to see if the Yankees need his help.

  82. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Bronxie Brenda – Did you see the Kruk “analysis” that ESPN kept showing right after showing highlights of the Yanks game highlights and celebration from last night? I don’t think he’s backpeddling at all. He’s still slamming the Yanks every chance he gets…

  83. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

…and to the Red Sox fans who find the need to post at Yankees Blogs…I have NEVER posted at nor visited a Boston Blog, but I would venture to guess that if I put the name Vito ( Yankees Fan ) and started posting comments, I would not be welcomed….continue your silly strategy out into the real world BoSux fans….get totally dressed up, head to toe in your Idiot Garb and walk into Yankees stadium, plant yourself RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of about 50 Yankes Fans and see how well they listen to your OPINION on things….NEWSFLASH : They care about as much as I care, which is about as much as 99% of Yankees Fans…..ZERO….We hate your team…You hate our team….We are heated rivals and there is no love ! Sorry to smack you in the face with reality, but the truth sometimes hurts pal. If you want a group of people to talk to and to mostly agree with you…GO TO A BOSTON BLOG, EINSTEIN !!!

    Torre just said on WFAN:

Joba can be used everyday in the post season because of all of the off days.

  85. TKinDC September 27th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

Joe Torre is on the FAN – - – not going to go nuts going after the division and is going to rest guys. He is comfortable with Moose pitching if he needs a 4th starter because Hughes is “not as comfortable with his stuff” as he should be.

I think Moose can do ok against Cleveland but I wouldn’t want to see him start against Boston. JMHO

  86. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

    Torre on the FAN:

-If we need a fourth starter, we are going with Moose.

-Minky earned a few postseason starts due to his hitting since coming back from the injury and due to his experience.

  87. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:25 pm

Andrea – Give me Tyler Clippard’s start against the Mets any day over ALL the starts made by both Wright and your crush DeSalvo. As for Wright, walking (or balking) in a run is an “incident.” Giving up four straight homers is officially a travesty! As for DeSalvo, he doesn’t have major league-quality stuff period. He looked good at first because he was a junkball pitcher facing a free-swinging club (Seattle). Once hitters (quickly) figured out he couldn’t make them swing-and-miss with anything he actually threw in the strike zone, he was exposed.

In terms of your “crush” on DeSalvo…You should view him as most guys view Anna Kournikova…We all realize she can’t really play tennis worth a damn, but we like her because she’s easy on the eyes. DeSalvo is your Kournikova! ;)

  88. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:26 pm

    Torre on the FAN:

-Guys will be rested over the next few days. Rest is more important than the division push.

Most importantly he has not yet decided who will manage on Sunday they are still kicking it around

  91. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Bring back Ruben Sierra to manage the last game! (Kidding!!!)

  92. LCâ„¢ September 27th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Who’s that crazy guy with the gravel voice on Daily News Live?

  93. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

    Torre on the FAN:

-They have still not decided who will manage the final game on Sunday: Posada was the first name discussed.

  94. mel September 27th, 2007 at 5:31 pm

    Don Vito,

You may be the village idiot, but you can see through the passive-agressive tactics of the Red Sox “fans” that come here. lol.

  95. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

Chicago Dave: the Mets suck against rookie pitchers. look at Clippard’s second start against the Mets. And it was Clippard who balked in a run, not Wright.

I just would have liked to see Wright get another chance. I liked DeSalvo, regardless of everyone calling him a “junkballer.” He just lost confidence. All I’m saying is I wish that they got chances over Clippard.

  96. TKinDC September 27th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

As far as letting a player manage:

Do you think if A-Rod gets to manage, he will put Torre in the 8-hole????

    :)

  97. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:36 pm

Andrea – I was just using the walking/balking in a run thing for sake of comparison. I didn’t even remember that Clippard balked in a run.

Still, to an extent you have a point…Was Clippard markedly better in his ML starts than DeSalvo or Wright this year? Arguably no. Or, at least as far as the stats go, he wasn’t clearly better. However, I still think he has better stuff than either Wright or DeSalvo.

Be honest, now…Your opinion of DeSalvo’s pitching is heavily influenced by your opinion of his looks! ;)

  98. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

if you’re calling me the village idiot for my entertainment value…if you’re calling me an actual idiot,,,we MAY have a problem ( JOKE ! ) SO, it seems the Yankees are gonna coast now…I guess that is OK, as it seems almost 100% that we face CLE in the 1st round…..So let’s get rested up for winning just 11 more games and collect RING NUMBER 27….FOREVER GO YANKEES !!!

  99. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

Chicago Dave: I think looking at their stats isn’t really a fair assessment, especially of Wright, since he really only mad a start and a half. Maybe the other two it’s a fair assessment, but him more than the others, I just wanted to see him get another chance.

It wasn’t so much DeSalvo’s looks (he’s a strange looking dude, those rosey cheeks and carrying around that lollipop and everything!), I just liked his attitude. DeSalvo is awful out of the bullpen, too, so I think looking at his stats, that has to be taken out.

  100. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:40 pm

If the Yanks are truly coasting, then maybe they should start Wright, Clippard and DeSalvo over the last three games (after tonight).

  101. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

start DeSalvo? don’t you tease me Chicago Dave!

  102. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:43 pm

Andrea – Well, I was agreeing to throw out the stats (in my last post). I was basically saying that, even throwing out the numbers, I still like what I’ve seen of Clippard’s pitch repertoire better than that of Wright or DeSalvo.

Still, I also agree that, if anyone should get more of a look (in the future), it’s probably Wright more than DeSalvo.

  103. mel September 27th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

    HaHa, Vito

I don’t think you’re an idiot at all, just having some funs with someone whose criticism of you was unwarranted. Love your posts in the last 2 months, because I’m a really superstitious person and deep down in my heart I believe the things you espouse. I just never post them because…I’m superstitious

  104. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

“start DeSalvo? don’t you tease me Chicago Dave!”

Sorry, Andrea, didn’t mean to get your hopes up!!! It was just a passing thought…

Seriously, though, do you really have the hots for the guy?! I’m having a very hard time believing that DeSalvo is what young women would consider to be a “hottie” these days!!!

  105. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

I sincerely doubt that any young women find him to be a hottie. But I’ve got 2 English degrees and am a book lover, so that whole “I have a list of 500 books thing” was a real plus for him.

i just liked his demeanor. After the failed experiment with Chase Wright, it was good to see him have some confidence. I just liked his attitude. When I’m at the Stadium I sit by the bullpen, and he has a lot of fun out there. Last time I was there, he looked like he was having a lot of fun joking around with Kei Igawa and Tyler Clippard. Just looks like a fun guy and I want to see him do well.

  106. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 5:49 pm

    That being said,,,Yankees PostSeason Record: 11-5 !!!

  107. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:50 pm

Andrea – OK, fair enough! You’re certainly allowed to like whomever you want…

Heck, since they’re all Yankees, how could I object!!

  108. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Chicago Dave: don’t hate me, but i also like Brian Bruney!`

  109. JJ the jet plane bitches!!! September 27th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

    wheres the lineup?

  110. Mark September 27th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

With the thin amount of lefthanded bullpen talent out there, it’s not the worse idea to see if Chase Wright can develop into a good one in spring training. Sean Henn has run out of chances.

  111. alice September 27th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

    cm wang is HOTT

  112. mike September 27th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

    ya wheres the lineup

  113. John September 27th, 2007 at 5:54 pm

The very well-connected Gordon Edes is informing me, via his sources in St. Petersburg, Fla., that the Yankees, who face the Devil Rays and Scott Kazmir tonight are lagging a little bit after clinching a posteason berth last night. Some observers down there were astonished at how hard the team celebrated, especially compared to the muted toast the Sox made in the same ballpark when they clinched. It seems the Yanks are pretty convinced it’s the only celebration they will get to have before October gets underway. And today they are taking their time getting to the ballpark. The last bus from the team hotel left at an unusually late 5:30 p.m., and the team is not taking batting practice. Their starting lineup still wasn’t posted as of a short time ago. Are the Yanks conceding the AL East?

  114. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

Andrea – Bruney?!!!! OK, you’re officially “off the reservation” as the saying goes! I was willing to capitulate and give you DeSalvo…but now you’ve taken advantage of my generosity!! Off with your head, you recalcitrant woman!!!!

  115. John September 27th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

    Forgot the link:

  116. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

Chicago Dave: it’s purely a personality thing! He was awesome with the little kids that were screaming into the bullpen during a day game one time, and he officially won my heart. and then this past weekend, he basically told the skanky girl that was annoying our entire section to bugger off. Chair breaking notwithstanding, I like his personality.

  117. LCâ„¢ September 27th, 2007 at 5:59 pm

    John,
I think Joe already said he’s going to set up for the playoffs, so the division is obviously not their main concern.

  118. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

John – Are you a Sox fan?

  119. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

Great shot of Jeter getting lifted up and hugged by A-Rod on YES.

  120. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

John–The Yanks don’t care about the AL East, or, at least, not to the point of it mattering.

They were 14.5 games out of a playoff spot at once; that they’ve made the playoffs at all is something to celebrate.

Also, you have to remember that for a lot of the Yankee rookies, this is the first time they’ve ever done it…

  121. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

Andrea – Now I’m having a distinct sense of deja-vu…Didn’t we discuss your Bruney crush a while ago? Seems I remember you telling me the story about the kids screaming and Bruney putting a finger up to his mouth and politely telling them to shush-up. Or am I dreaming all this?!!

  122. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

If ever Kazmir was primed to have a dominating performance, I think it’s tonight…It’ll be a “B” or “C” lineup for the Yanks, and they’ll probably all be hungover and bleary-eyed from last night. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kazmir flirted with a no-no…Honestly!!!

  123. Andrea September 27th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Chicago Dave: I told someone that story. Probably you!

He was being really nice to screaming kids again this past weekend (the Sunday game) and this skanky girl–at least 18, too old to be screaming into the bullpen, wouldn’t shut up – kept trying to get bullpen guys to wave at her. Bruney was nice at first, but finally looked at her and was like “enough,” and put his hand up and told her to go sit down.

  124. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Chi Dave–As long as Micheal Kay doesn’t mention the CD Player again, I think I can handle it.

  125. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Rebecca – What’s this about the CD Player?

  126. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

Chi Dave–Kazmir used to be on the Mets. Rumour has it that Leiter and some other vet were working out, when Kazmir changed the music they had on the player and put on Eminem. Legend says Leiter than went and complained to the GM or someone, and badda boom, Kazmir was traded.

This is, of course, urban legend…

  127. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:16 pm

OK, since the lineup isn’t posted yet, here are my most up-to-date guesses: Duncan in right, Cabrera in center, Sardinha in left, Betemit at third or second, Gonzalez at short, Minky at first and Molina at catcher. Some combination of A-Rod, Jeter and Cano will definitely sit, but not all three.

  128. Chicago Dave September 27th, 2007 at 6:17 pm

Rebecca – That’s quite an urban legend! Then again, wasn’t Phillips the GM at the time? If so, he’s such a true idiot that I might actually believe the myth is true!!

  129. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

Rebecca- Wow. I’ve honestly never heard that before! It would explain why they seemed to dump Kazmir so quickly.

  130. LCâ„¢ Umbeleebable! September 27th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

The lineup still isn’t out yet?

  131. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism! September 27th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Chi Dave–It would explain a lot!

J-Dawg: Really? Micheal Kay mentions it all the time!

  132. Phil - 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

Rebecca you forgot to tell them that Leiter has denied this everytime Kay brings it up.

  133. LCâ„¢ Umbeleebable! September 27th, 2007 at 6:20 pm

    J-Dawg,
I heard Kay and Al talking about it once in the booth, and Al said it was nonsense. But who knows?

  134. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Yeah, sadly I am down in the wrong part of the country. :) I can’t get YES or MLB Extra Innings except for when they do free previews.

  135. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    :) should be :(

  136. Pittsburgh Yankee September 27th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

    Hey Sox:

Who’s going to pitch game 2 in the ALDS? Matz? 38bigones? (hey his Boston house is for sale, hmmm), Wakefield? Lester?

Better hope Cleveland loses, so at least you only have to trot out 2 starters, not 3. Gagne or Okijima in relief? Great, boys and girls. Better hope your offense can give you at least 5-6 runs per game. Wait…you mean your seasonal runs per game is less than that?

Do you really care where the Yankees are in the playoffs that much that Gordon Edes is posting when their team bus left for the Trop tonight? Man, the Yankees must really be in your heads. I guess when your division rival picks up 11.5 games on you in the last 110, that can kind of do that to you.

OK, enough with the troll response for now…

  137. Jim Clark September 27th, 2007 at 6:27 pm

Jim Duquette was the Mets GM when the Kazmir trade was made. He says he didn’t speak up against it because there were 11 people in the room and didn’t feel comfortable doing so. Kazmir has said he got along great with Leiter and Franco although they may have wanted a trade to get second half help to make the playoffs one more time (the Mets were 3 games behind Atlanta).

  138. UncleDonVitoBellamo 27 in '07 September 27th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

Hey John the Boston Fan…I’d post a link for YOU to go to,,,but I’d get in BIG TROUBLE !

  139. Doreen September 27th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

Since it is Leiter in the booth with Kay, I would say chances are about 100% that the CD incident gets mentioned yet another time.

Lately, Michael Kay gets on my nerves. And he was really off his game last night.

  140. saucy September 28th, 2007 at 12:09 am
