That’s the (regular) season

Peter Abraham
September
30

The Yankees won 73 of their final 112 games after that 21-29 start. They also finished with 968 runs, the most for the franchise since 1937.

“In a lot of ways it was an amazing season,” Jorge Posada said.

Posada enjoyed his stint as manager. Joe Torre sat down the end of the bench talking to Chien-Ming Wang (”It was boring,” said the skipper. “That’s one thing I found out. But if you ask him a question he gives you a funny answer.”). All in all it was a carefree day.

Well, except for Derek Jeter. He was peeved that his buddy Posada made Andy Pettitte the bench coach.

“He was a terrible manager. There were a lot of problems that we’re going to keep in-house for now,â€? Jeter said. “He was awful.â€?

Jeter was kidding. At least we hope so.

    Pete,
Can you gage the attitude from this years club to last years club as they were headed into the postseason. Can you recall were there allot of question marks? in regards to the pitching staff and also with the return of sheff & matsui to the lineup? I need to be reminded because last years postseason was to short and to painfull. THANKS.

  4. Franklyn

good to see an upbeat and happy team headed into the playoffs. Go yanks!

  5. ron

1998 team scored 965 runs. 2007 beat them by 3 runs. 2007 allowed 777 runs, while 1998 allowed 656. there is your difference in 20 wins.

  6. kd

I wish Jeter would open up a little more to the media. It’d be interesting to see what he really thinks

  7. Matt

The ‘98 team only scored 965 runs.

  8. Carmine

Who would’ve thought back in May when my Met fan friends were heckling me and all I could say was “the season’s not over yet” that by October, the Yankees would take the wild card with 94 wins and the Mets would not make the playoffs? I have no sympathy for the Amazins.

  9. LCâ„¢

T-Shirt Hell just made this Mets shirt LOL

    I S H I T YOU NOT!!

    LMAO !!

  11. Dr. Acula

Well, tomorrow is Monday, October 1st.

I hope the Mets get to the office bright and early and use the entire month of October to prepare for _next year_ ;)

LOL Bonus: Boston acoylte Peter Gammons just said, the Mets players should look to the Yankees to learn how to play the game.

  12. VOIII

I visited a Met Blog just for some good reading ;) …They are calling for Willie’s head, naturally, but what gauls me is that they want Gary Carter to replace him…Ugh… If I have to see that Jerks face on my TV during the Sports news again(Flashbacks to 86)…I may have to gouge my eyes out.

  15. Andrea

I haven’t seen the waterless toilet ad, but now I’m intrigued.

  16. Kill-Schill(ing)

Ayone know what time the Yankees playoff games will be played?

I assume Games 1 and Games 2 are in prime-time? No?

ANyone know what time they’ll play Game 3.

  17. NH Mike

    Pete,

Any news on first pitch times? Do we have to wait until the final of tomorrows’ NL game?

  21. Andrea

I keep getting Derek Jeter Ringtone and Laser Hair Removal for Men (discrimination :( )

  22. Joey Bagadonuts

You may recall Pete saying something about how the blogads can be generated by the use of certain words here in comments, which is why we were sometimes subjected to Red Sox crapola

    speaking of which

could the “waterless toilet” ad have appeared because of this….?

  24. jennifer 27 in 07

Joey Bagadonuts you just made me laugh!!

  25. Dr. Acula

NL schedule won’t be determined until tomorrow.

D-Back get to choose 7-day or 8-day schedule.

But we do know D-Backs host the Cubs and Philly hosts either the Padres or the rockies.

So come Thursday, the games will be Us and one of the above NL games.

I imagine if it’s the Philly, TBS/MLB will schedule the Yanks at nite (remember this about money).

Now if it’s D-backs, there is an outside chance TBS/MLB may schedule the DBacks/Cubs at nite, cuz of the oddity of seeing the Cubs in the postseason.

  26. Boston Dave

yanks better be at night or im gonna have to use some vacation days.

  27. Lynn

So will the players that don’t make the playoff roster go to Tampa to keep in shape just in case of injury and a need to be added in the ALCS or will they just stay in NY?

  28. Batty

I’m suddenly really sad that regular baseball is over. Yeah, the post season will be a lot of fun but it just means that the end is nigh.

Also feel really bad for Willie. This one will be very hard to sleep on tonight.

  29. Andrea

Does anyone know if/when an encore of today’s game will be on? I want to see Jorge manage!

  30. huuz

i hope we face Carmona during the night.

    ERA (day) : 2.14, 84.0 IP

  31. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    Hey everyone.

    What’d I miss?

I mean, aside from Mets/Phillies? They were kind enough to update us on that at the Bills/Jets game!

  32. Joe from Long Island

Rebecca – Yanks won, 10-4; some good pitching from several in pen, including Joba (his scheduled one batter) and Ohlendorf (though he gave up a run). Even Kyle was OK pitching the 9th, though he may have tweaked his groin, after which he gave up a HR, but then struck out the last batter. Abreu got his 100th, and 101st rbi. No one hurt, otherwise. But LOTS of angst at Shea. Lots.

  33. pat

Encore at 11pm and 9am on YES

  34. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    joe and Pat: Thanks much!

I’ll probably catch a bit of the 11 PM encore…and then fall asleep five minutes later…

  35. Jim Clark

    Resign Posada as player-manager.

  36. Sherri

Pete – I believe a TROLL is impersonating Rebecca.

  37. '07 Gabriel ( #27 in '07 )

Yankees and Angels should both win their series, 3-1 or 3-0. Cleveland and Boston both don’t have eith the pitching OR the hitting to match up and will go home early. It will be the year that the Yankees FINALLY get over the stigma of not being able to finish of LA Angels in either a regular season or playoff series.

  38. Jeter's future wife

that’s surely not Rebecca! Pete check the IP address!

  39. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    …Trolls stole my name.

I trust you guys know which is the troll and which is not.

  40. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

Hah! You guys are faster than I am! All that sun is making me sloooow today…

  41. philly

    Pete,
Find that Fake Rebecca, delete post then delete them forever. Typical BoSox Fan

  42. Sherri

I emailed Pete a little while ago about the troll. That’s just sick.

  43. CATYA

    I emailed Pete too rebecca

  44. murphydog

Great day for the Yanks to relax and take a deep breath before they start shifting gears for the ALDS, ALCS and WS. Next stop, the parade up the Canyon of Heroes.

I feel bad for Willie Randolph. He’s gonna get the blame (and probably the axe) even though he doesn’t play the games. Owners never seem to understand how a manager can lose in such historic fashion. Unless it’s Joe Torre and it’s the 2004 ALCS.

Sherri: either you are right about the troll or Rebecca has just developed multiple personality disorder – - not to mention a bad case of potty mouth. (And she seemed like such a nice girl too).

  45. murphydog

    Rebecca… BTW, I was kidding. I know it wasn’t you ; )

  46. Sherri

murphydog – but you did say “potty,” so you’re probably going to cause some more of those waterless toilet ads!!! LOL

  47. Andrea

    That troll was fast.

Thanks for the encore Pat. Sometimes they’d do the encore (maybe it was just once) at 7 for a day game. They tricked my dad into thinking it was live and he was wondering why it was so bright.

  48. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

You guys are amazing! And the good sort of amazing, not the Mets sort…

It takes more than a troll to get under my skin…but wow, I feel at home here, thanks everyone!

    Hey, got a question:

Would anyone be up for ‘campaign 27 in ‘07′ shirts? I kind of feel like making them or something…

  49. Andrea

Rebecca; isn’t it weird getting trolled (That’s what I call it–not sure what else to call it…)

I got trolled once. It was a strange feeling!

  50. CATYA

Pete emailed me and said ,when reporting the trolls mention the thread and the time in your emails.Legal will handle the rest.

  51. Sherri

Rebecca – I’m of the superstitious sort, and getting a shirt that says “Campaign 27 in ‘07,” no matter how much I support it, just makes me a little nervous.

  52. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    Sherri–Understood!

(Would you be up for a shirt after we achieve it, then?) ;)

  53. Kat

Rebecca – I made a “mission 27″ shirt and wore it to opening day. Now I am going to wear it to the playoffs!!!!

  54. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

Anyone got tix to any of the playoff games?

  55. Andrea

There’s actually quite a few people with jerseys with number 27. Unless th ey’re really bit Darrell Rasner fans, or there’s someone else I am missing, I think that’s a pretty cool idea.

  56. Sherri

Sure – a shirt after we achieve it would be PERFECT! :)

  57. Andrea

Clay: I’ve got ALCS home game 2 and World Series game 2. I didn’t bother with ALDS. At the time I didn’t care but now I want them and can’t find them. I suck.

  58. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

    Kat–That’s awesome!

    Sherri–You’re on!

  59. Florida Yank

After all is said and done, this regular season roller coaster ride was worth it. The way these Yankees found themselves was far from boring and there’s still plenty of gas left in the tank. Let the next season begin.

    OPTIMISM RULES !

  60. Dint

Remember the A-Rod mission website from the beginning of the season? Man did that turn out to be unnecessary.

  61. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

    Andrea,

I know a bunch of season tix holders. How many tickets are you looking for for the ALDS? I’ll check around.

  62. Ross

It was really nice to see Molina getting those hits, today. Whatever happens, I would really like to see him back next season; a very solid defensive catcher, who seems to have fitted in extraordinarily well, too.

  63. Andrea

Clay: just 2. But I don’t really want to spend a lot, since I already spent so much on World Series and ALCS (which is kind of why I missed the boat on ALDS) Thanks!

I checked on stub hub and ebay and stuff, and they’re asking $80 and $100 and stuff even just for bleachers per ticket for ALDS. That’s just plain crazy–actual face value is less than $30!

  64. BX 12 Fordham Rd

I am in Barcelona for work this week and it is going to be a lot of early to bed, 2am wake up calls and mlb.com for the first few games.

in ‘03 I was in Germany and watched the Boone hr from the office at 5am or so….one of the greatest nights ever and I am screaming and jumping up and down in an office building in Bonn…..

  65. pat

I remembered about the project A13 website about 2 weeks ago. I never checked it out before the season but looked at it a few weeks ago. The guy who did it couldn’t have possibly envisioned A-Rod having the kind of season he ended up with. Talk about optimism.

  66. Miguel

Peter, thanks for all the great reporting this season. I’d hate to lose you, but you might wanna consider applying for this guy’s job. I voted “none of the above”. Apparently, according to MLB.com, the Indians have won “the only postseason matchup between the two clubs”, in 1997. It’s as if 1998 never happened! Don’t these people have editors? This is not some mom-and-pop paper based out of Findlay, OH….it’s MLB.com! And it’s not just a simple fact thrown into the story, it’s kind of central to the article. This writer has an amazing job; he gets paid to follow baseball. He can’t even get the most basic facts right. Lame!

You would think that one of the requirements of being a “national baseball reporter” is a thorough grasp of recent MLB history. I figured there was such a thing as “fact-checking” too. oh well. thanks for the blog Pete, it’s first-rate!

there’s no such as a sure thing in baseball… but I am more confident going into the post-season this year than I’ve been in a few years. their attitude is so positive – - and I think we’ve got all the youngsters to thank for that. Mr Duncan has been great in his official rule as “Spirit Coordinator”.
