Division series FAQ

Based on the e-mails that are pouring in, here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Postseason roster: It’s not due until noon Thursday. The Yankees aren’t expected to reveal the final selections until Tuesday or Wednesday. When it’s official, it will be posted here.

Game times: We’re still waiting. As soon as they’re available, they’ll be posted.

Ian Kennedy: He is in Tampa and has been cleared to throw. He’ll keep his arm in shape and be ready if needed in the second round. He is getting a 48-hour pass to get married on Saturday.

A few of his buddies, Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes among them, hope to attend the ceremony.

Game 4 starter: Joe Torre knows but he’s keeping it to himself for now. Bet on it being Mike Mussina with Phil Hughes ready to come in quickly.

Hope that clears up a few things.

    Thanks, Pete. You’re the best.

I am really, really surprised the Joba and Phil are going to allowed to attend, even though I understand the wedding is on an off-day. Unless they’re chartering a private means of transportation?

  2. Bob

I don’t like the idea of them being able to go.

  3. Larry Mahnken

“I don’t like the idea of them being able to go.”

This is a really stupid thing to say.

It’s their friend’s wedding. It’s an off day. Let them go.

  4. BigYank1

I like the fact that our young pitchers are close friends. They can really help each other in the years to come with making adjustments of MLB baseball.

  5. Bob

Well Larry, oh wise one. Considering Clemens is a big question mark for Sunday, and Hughes would likely be the one to go if he got lifted early, I’d prefer if he wasn’t flying back from a wedding the night before.

  6. Ryan CT

Foxsports has the Yankees game time at 12:00 for all 5 games. That can’t be right can it? I find it hard to believe all 5 games would be at 12:00 for the Yankees. Maybe its just like that until everything is all set up or something.

  7. chris in fairfield

i heard the ” moose to start game 4 with phil hughes ready to go if anything happens ” chestnut from a few people in the media . man , no confidence in the moose . i bet he shuts ‘em down . the thing that worries me a little bit is how the wanger pitches game 1 on the road . when the series goes to the bronx tied 1-1 . lets see how the tribe handles 57000 crazy fans in the chill of early october .

Pete — Is this Bruney “I’m shocked” quote from the Post after being told he won’t be used in the post season true?

I just can’t imagine this guy is as dense as the media makes him sound. Tell me the truth.

How he could be shocked about this after the dreadful season he’s had and the fact that he did nothing positive for this team this season just blows my mind.

I think a guy who has struggled as much as he has would be slightly humble at this point in the season and hope the organization doesn’t completely give up on him.

The Yankees should charter a plane, and have someone to keep an eye on them We don’t need anyone drinking too much and not being able to pitch.

  10. KurticusMaximus

Where was Kennedy in the farm system when he picked a date for his wedding?

Nothing against the guy, I’m glad he’s getting the time off to go, but seriously- if you play baseball for a living, especially for the Yankees organization, shouldn’t you just consider October untouchable? This seems like poor prior planning.

  11. Matt

Are you sure the wedding’s not in New York, Bob?

  12. Matt

He definitely wasn’t expecting to be with the Yankees, Kurticus. And his fiancee has her own basketball playoffs in November or something, so the window was narrow.

  13. Bob

I thought I remember reading it was in St. Louis.

  14. Skippy

The wedding’s in St. Louis and I recall reading that Kennedy cleared the date with the Yankees before setting it. Of course this was probably about a year ago, at least.

  15. CaptainsCorner

I am really surprised that Joba and Kennedy would go to the wedding. I understand that it is there friends wedding BUT it is not like the wedding is 4 days before the play offs or after it is right inbetween and they have a game the next day. They need there heads in the right place, especially Joba. We know the kids can get crazy and hopefully they are smart about it but I would hate to hear how drunk they got. Kennedy said that the wedding is in St. Louis and he planned it in the off season and asked Newman and he said it was a good time. He started the year in A ball so he figured the highest he would get is AA.

  16. Darrin

The key question re: Joba and Hughes attending the wedding in St. Louis is — what time is Sunday’s game scheduled? If the Yanks get the 8:00 time slot okay. But what if they get the 1:00 game? You want Joba and Phil partying til midnight at a wedding reception in St. Louis Saturday night with a 1:00 first pitch in NY on Sunday? I don’t.

Perhaps they’ll be able to attend, so long as they are back in NY right after the ceremony.

  17. Dr. Acula

    Gawd!

I can’t believe Ian is going through with the marriage!

Can’t he fake an injury or something?

He’s only 22. Man O Man, who gets married these days, let alone, at such an early age.

I blame Liberal-Hollywood for this disaster!!

  18. randyhater

Oh, Kennedy’s wife has a basketball game? Well that’s definitely more important than our little thing.

Kennedy should be told to reschedule his wedding during the offseason. It’s four months long, I think he can find a date that fits his wife’s calendar.

As to Hughes and Chamberlin, of course they shouldn’t be allowed to go, and the fact that they’d even ask shows a lack of professionalism that the team should smack down right quick.

Of course who can blame them? It was a week ago today, when the division was still on the line, that the team was more concerned with a Wizard of Oz homage than they were with playing winning baseball.

  19. 77yankees

Long time lurker, 1st time poster. As mentioned above, when Kennedy set the date he obtained permission from the Yankees. And FYI, his fiance plays college bball, so she has to get married before practice & the season starts. Finally, there is no way Joba or Hughes should miss the wedding. Its (hopefully) a once in a lifetime event. Its not like they would be missing a game. Finally, jennifer, I LOVE the optimism. :)

  20. VTYankeeFan

    Randyhater, get a grip.

Kennedy’s wife plays shooting guard for USC’s women’s basketball team. Her season starts (practice) in a week and she is unable to get time off either. This was scheduled way earlier in the season when no one in their right mind thought it was even remotely possible that Kennedy might be in the Majors, especially the way the Yankees carefully monitor their pitchers. Rescheduling a wedding is no small task, so the Yankees are right for not asking him to consider it.

Joba and Hughes should be allowed to attend the ceremony, but not the reception. They will be in Cleveland on Friday anyway, so head to St. Louis from there, see their friend get married and then head to NY. If Clemens can’t go in Game 3, Mussina is likely to get the start before Hughes anyway, saving Hughes for Game 4. This shouldn’t be that big of a deal and not attending the reception eliminates the risk of excessing drinking.

The Wizard of Oz thing was a rookie hazing – something they have been doing for years. If you think that prevented them from winning the division, well, I am glad that you aren’t either the manager or GM.

  21. ND Yank

Didn’t Pete just mention the ceremony and not the reception? Fly into St. Louis late Saturday morning, hit the church and then fly to NYC on early Saturday evening. Think about it, that’s probably better than these guys hangin’ out in the city all day anyhow.

  22. jennifer 27 in 07

KurticusMaximus HE STARTED OUT IN A BALL. He spoke to someone within the Yankee org and asked, they said it was okay for him to choose that since the minor league season was over by than. NO ONE THOUGHT A PITCHER WOULD START OUT AT SINGLE A AND END UP IN THE MAJORS ESPICALLY IN THE YANKEE SYSTEM!! When was the last time that happened?

  23. ND Yank

    Get a clue randyhater.

  24. jennifer 27 in 07

I don’t get the hate on the kids. Oh he shouldn’t get married on that day, and they shouldn’t go. Give me a break. They will and should be allowed to go. YOu give them a curfew and tell them not to drink too much. If you don’t think they’d be out partying if they were in NY anyway you are clueless. The rumor was in 2003 that Jason was out PARTYING like a wild man the the night before he asked of the lineup.

  25. randyhater

    VTYankeeFan,

The future Mrs. Kennedy’s college basketball practice is more important than the playoffs? Practice?!

It’s about professionalism and focus. If you don’t think those things are important in baseball, you apparently missed what happened in Flushing over the weekend.

Team goals take precedence over personal business than can easily be rescheduled. Kennedy’s fiance apparently understands that. He should too.

  26. Chris NY

who cares about the wedding, only important thing in there was that he can pitch in the ALCS if needed. If Hughes and Joba go, the team will make sure they understand the responsibility involved and quite frankly, everything I’ve read about their poise and composition tells me they’d be responsible enough and back in time to get well rested. St. Louis isn’t exactly the other side of the earth.

That said, if it were my team, none of them would be going anywhere………… but they’re professionals.

  27. #54

Adding my 2 cents on the wedding.

Who takes only 48 hours leave for their own wedding anyway? I’m guessing the 48 hrs. means they had any post-wedding or honeymoon plans cancelled due to playoffs, rightfully so.

It makes sense to me that Kennedy should be approved leave for his wedding considering its HIS wedding and he had no reason to anticipate being in the major leagues when he set the date. So that’s cool.

BUT, I would think the Yankees would be reasonable to tell the other players who are invited that due to playoffs they cannot attend out of state weddings the night before a playoff game. IF the team felt that their presence was even potentially crucial to Sunday’s game or had any reason to worry about activities at the wedding they should tell Hughes and Joba not to go.

Having said that, I think its cool they are allowing them to go to their buddy’s wedding as planned and hopefully have a good time. I’m not concerned about it. Seeing what we’ve seen of Joba so far I’d bet my money that Joba will be hurrying back to the stadium to show everyone he’s ready and eager to get in the game.

Joba? Phil? Sorry, no wedding for you. Baseball before marriage, just like the rest of us.
