Rocket is a go for Game 3
Just spoke to Mike Dougherty of The Journal News, who is covering the Yankees in the Bronx today. Roger Clemens threw 69 pitches in a simulated game in Tampa today, facing minor leaguers.
Assuming his left hamstring feels fine today when he gets to Cleveland, Clemens will start Game 3 in New York on Sunday.
There will be no word on the roster today. The Yankees are carrying a few extra pitchers and the final decisions will be made tomorrow.
I’m headed over to Jacobs Field now and will post a report later on the Indians.

Great news on Rocket. I’m not all that comfortable with Moose just yet, so it’ll be nice to have Hughes backing him up.
I’m hoping Ohlendorf makes it in – in my eyes, he’s earned a chance.
Assuming his hamstring is fine, I think the rest will really be good for him. I’m looking for a solid outing.
I wish the Rocket the best of luck in the world. He’s an absolute gamer and I have nothing but respect for him. Roger is one of the true greats on the mound and in the clubhouse. I am looking forward to seeing the Rocket’s red glare on Sunday.
If we don’t get the sweep…I am way more comfortable having Wang go on only 1 day “short” rest in game 4, then have Andy ready on Normal rest in the event there is a game 5, thanto have Moose OR Hughes hit ANY first round playoff mound. If Torre uses Moose or Hughes in a game 4, then Wang will be pitching on too much rest in Game 5 and that has proven to be trouble for him as his sinker tends to flatten out.
Dog justed asked Torre if Rocket had trouble during the game who would he be likely to have shadowing him to come in. Torre said Mussina has good numbers against Cleveland and he would be a possible choice. That sounded to me like Joe may be leaning towards going with Hughes in game 4.
Per WFAN. No Wakefield on Bostons roster. Back is acting up
I agree with Gabriel, but Joe wont do that to Moose (maybe unfortunately). I just hope Moose has a quick hook if he doesnt look dominant right off the bat. We can’t afford to spare anybody’s feelings if its going to cost the season.

They’re going to carry a 3rd catcher, who, ironically caught Wakefield pretty well.
So out of 10 “expert picks” on espn.com for this series, only THREE are picking the Yankees to take it. Stark, Caple and Bryant. Everybody has been proving us wrong all year, I hope we continue to surprise. We finally have a TEAM this year. It feels great. And kicking everybody’s butt to accomplish 27 in ’07 will be sweeter!!!
Oh & I forgot, or maybe I missed the announcement, but what day and time do the Metropolitans play again?!!? Ha! Oh right. I forgot. They choked with 17 games left. (sorry, thats for all my friends who are Mets fans who kept telling me it wasn’t too late to ‘cross over’ and join a winning team before the All-Star Break.)
Some, may wonder why Roger chose NY instead of “Bawston”.
2 Reasons:
To help Yankees get #27,and to be identified with with the most storied team in baseball, when he’s inducted in the hall of fame, wearing his 3 WS rings and Yankee cap.
So you see the money is great, but the glory is more meaningful!!!!
GO ROGER
I don’t care if Roger is trying to be a white knight. As long as he doesn’t fall off his horse, it’s all good.
great news! i am sure roger is fired up.
Carrying a third catcher is very odd. Also if I recall correctly he didn’t hit very well.
Roger Clemens= Rooster Cogburn.
J-Dawg – Hell yeah!!!
I still like Moose over Hughes. I’d prefer Moose to start and Hughes in long relief. I have the utmost confidence in MOOOOOSE. Phil too though, but i’m just saying…
Hey, don’t want to bombard you with links, but there are a lot of great stories online:
-Article on Bernie talking about Melky (NY Post)
-Article about Minky honoring Andy on the field (The Journal/Bergen Record)
-go to espn.com to rank the playoff teams
Wakefield being left off doesn’t hurt them at all. If they had the short series then maybe it would (but is Wakefield really any better than Lester?), but then again we’d be facing Carmona twice in that case.
No big deal. 3rd catcher is strange though. Are they dying to pinch-hit with Doug Mirabelli that badly? Who’s he going to hit for? I’d think a pinch-runner would be more valuable.
Oh well. Go Ohlendorf!
This is why the Rocket came back. I expect a great performance.
He’s no Tommy Glavine!

I know you’re being positive but the utmost confidence in Moose???
I think we’re all semi confident but utmost???
Mel-
Feel free to bombard us with links, I’m too lazy to go find the articles myself. : )
Sorry to disappoint Mr. Worthy, but yeah. UTMOST. lol.
and I see Clemens coming into game 3 ala Willis Reed!
If we all listened to the “experts” over at ESPN we’d be playing golf right now like the Mets. Right??
Games are won on the field.
I hope that getting Cleveland is the gift we all hoped for. IMO they need at least a split if not up 2-0 going back to the Bronx.
Because after Wang and Petite it is time to pray that Clemens or Moose don’t do a Glavine imitation which they both did earlier in the season. If Clemens falters in his start they need to relieve with Mussina not Hughes. Despite his lack of experience the team deserves to have an able bodied pitcher starting games 3 or 4 not mopping up after C or M.
LOL MJL,
I guess you do a lot of research at your job where you tape 2 shows on Monday.
Here’s a link to the SI Yankee page. It’s a great source for articles. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....s/yankees/
The link to the ranking poll’s in the last entry.
I’m not disappointed. I’m impressed. I wish we all could have the utmost confidence in Moose pitching.
I hope he proves it on the mound because we need him here if we’re going to survive and advance.
so..Vegas has the Yanks 3-1 favorites to win the whole thing. If they could get past the first round (i hate 5 game series) then I think they will go all the way!!!
Mel -
Haha, luckily I’m not in the research department or I think I’d shoot myself. And since you mentioned it, even our designated rep who’s supposed to go the games can’t go on Monday (if necessary, of course) now because of the early start times. So his clubhouse/press passes go to waste. How lame is that.
Clemens better be 100%, we can’t have any less then that on the mound this October. This is our year to go far.
I trust that Clemens won’t take the mound unless he feels confident.
I’m with hating 5 game series also. Similar to the NBA hating it and changing all first rounds to 7. I just cannot stand all the politics with commercials and channels prolonging playoffs though. Its awful!!
Okay I’m taking a survey. I have a 30th birthday party to go to on Saturday. Should I order the “Ya Gotta Bereave” shirt? He is a huge Met fan. Should I torture him?
Nothing to do with anything, but can you believe what a loser Britney Spears is? She lost custody of those two beautiful children…to K-Fed!
It’s really not nice, but I loved Sarah Silverman’s quote at the VMA’s, “They’re two of the most adorable mistakes ever.”
Great news! Let’s go Rocket!
Mel -
I guess she had problems before, anyway, but I have to wonder if anyone bothered to see if she had Post-Partum Depression. It seems to me that after the kids were born she really spiraled downward. It’s one of the saddest stories because of those two little boys. As far as Britney is concerned – I guess that poptart is cooked.
I feel bad for those children. They have a nut for a mother, than everywhere they go people are snapping pictures of them. I saw video of them last night on tv, they were scared!! They were holding hands. ;( I say give those kids to a family who will love them and take good care of them .
Mel-
I am so pi$$ed about the britney situation. a few months ago I drafted Lindsay in the first round of my corner-bar death pool, and I thought I was so smart, cuz none of my dawgs knew who Lindsay was. Now, I’m kicking myself, I shouda took Brit!!
Everyone knew that Clemens was going to take the ball..it is just what are your going to get from him? There was absolutely no way he was going to say he cant go. Which is kinda scary.
The part of the team that really scares me is the bullpen. Especially after watching the game last night where each team pitched about 5 innings of shut out ball. The Yanks would never be able to match something like that. If the starter only pitches 5 innings or even 6th..who are you going to pitch? Ohlendorf better make the roster. He keeps the ball down and has really good stuff. Veras is way too wild, and Ramirez is just not good enough, if he doesnt get ahead then he is batting practice and is gives up homeruns.
That is terrible dr. LOL
Great news about Clemens. The best news of all is we won’t have to hear Michael Kay repeat the phrase “Rocket relaunch” ad nauseum.
One of the best covers the NY Post has produced
http://tinyurl.com/yvkuhu
Right up there with “Headless Body Found In Topless Bar”
are we really talking about britney. I need some baseball, is it thursday yet?
I think Rocket knows he’s only got so many bullets left in that arm and he’s close to the end.
The stadium will be packed and in his corner. I expect a huge effort from him and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he dominated. He’s had rest. I don’t dout he’s focuses.
I don’t think I’m wishful thinking here, I just think the guy has heart and a lot of pride and he came back to the Yankees this season to win this thing.
The difference between last years Yanks and this years are guys like Pettite and Rocket who you know can aleady taste the ring.
I can’t imagine him going out like that sissy Glavine did on Sunday.
I’m worried about Mussina game 4 though — He’s not great in a big spot. He’s a shell of his former self. I can see him giving up 6-7 runs in two innings. Joe has to be diligent and if Mussina lets in 3, he has to pull him. If it goes 4, the bullpen should be on red alert and getting loose as soon as he puts guys on base. After watching that Met debacle, it’s easy to see how fast a game can spin out of control when you have a finesse veteran on the mound who refuses or is afraid to challenge in the strike zone.
Dr. Acula,
Your death pool comment killed me, then your link to the bimbo summit really scared me. Either you have an encyclopedic mind or you have way to much stuff on your computer.
migames,
Yes, we are talking about Britney. There’s only so much you can say about the collapse of the Mets and Roger’s hammy. Should we talk about Isiah instead? lol.
ack! That’s “too much stuff”.
I just hope and pray that the Rocket shuts down the Indians like he did the Sox at Fenway. That would be the ultimate f-u to all the critics.
Isiah Thomas has accepted the Mets offer to throw out the first pitch at Shea in the playoff opener.
