Playoff roster set

Peter Abraham
October
3

RHPs Ross Ohlendorf and Jose Veras are in.

RHP Edwar Ramirez, LHP Ron Villone and RHP Chris Britton are out.

Torre said that Veras was on the roster all along because the staff is so impressed with his stuff. They went back and forth on Ohlendorf but decided they wanted his ability, velocity and stuff ahead of Ramirez.

OF Bronson Sardinha is also on the roster as a pinch runner.

It’s hard to believe that the Yankees are going into the postseason with so many new faces. But it’s a sign of where Brian Cashman is taking the organization.

i like it, edwar’s too iffy, villone to average, britton too fat. sorry chris

  2. Peter Rabbit

Do we have the full complete list yet?

It’s kind of weird not having Edwar! Ross and Veras are so new, this is so weird! I feel like I hardly know them! AHHH!

  3. Rockin' Rich 27/07

We shall see, but on the surface it looks like a sound decision.

I just realized that there are no lefty relievers on the roster, but that doesn’t bother me one bit. It was a good decision to leave Villone off. Cashman’s youth movement is king and I am proud of it. And Sardines made the roster!!!!

    i like it. thanks peter.

though i’d love to see veras avoid the walks

  6. Waterdog

Size has nothing to do with it. ABILITY…….

  7. I love Joba

I have not been impressed with Veras, but hopefully he can prove me wrong here.

I’m disappointed however to hear that Torre opted to play Matsui instead of Duncan at DH against Sabathia.

I only hope Matsui proves his late-season slump owed to his balky knee and that its draining will result in him getting his swing back.

He look awful through most of September.

I’m glad to see Ross on the roster, but the truth is that he wont pitch unless it’s extra innings or a blowout. So in reality, it’s not a big deal. I’m super happy that we don’t have to worry about Villone being forced into the game to try and get a lefty out in a big situation. Now Torre won’t have the pressure of going “by the book”.

Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if Ohlendorf is the first reliever the Yankees employ in the series. I picture the Yankees down 4-2 patiently working Sabathia until he runs out of gas. I could see Ohlendorf coming in the 6th, maybe even to get the first win.

  11. Guy Incognito

Smart moves. I loved what Ohlendorf showed in September and Veras was good in his last few appearances.

Ollie gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 and a third; two ER and a dinger. Righties were 1 for 9 off of him.

Edwar and Britton, see ya…they didn’t play well enough.

Who’s the lefty arm in the pen now? Igawa?

  12. Jeff NJ

NO lefty in the pen. Having a Loogy in the pen did not work out. Give me a righty who can get both lefties and righties out any day. Torre had problems with making too many moves to use the Loogy anyway, so this helps Torre manage smarter.

  13. Bosco

Duncan isn’t very good, no reason to start him over Godzilla.

  14. Bosco

No point in carrying a lefty when all your lefties are bad. Cashman made the right move there.

No way! I’m in shock. Absolute shock. (That’s a good thing).

I didn’t want Villone, but I can’t help but feel a little bad for him:

“I heard it last night, but I didn’t even think about it, not for one second, Villone said yesterday after a workout at Yankee Stadium, before the Yankees flew to Cleveland. “I’m thinking about Travis Hafner and Grady Sizemore, the guys I’m going to be facing, who can run, what their strengths are.

Disagree on the lineup- would’ve opted for Duncan IPO Matsui for game 1, but hopefully Torre’s decision proves sound.

The Yankees are formidable so if the offense performs at 90% of what they’re capable of and the starting pitching gives them a decent 6+ innings, the Yankees will emerge victorious.

Any predictions out there?? I say Yankees in 5-games, with a loss in the first game. As far as I remember Wang hardly ever pitches well on too much rest- he is too strong so his sinker doesn’t sink.

  17. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Something must be wrong, I’m looking on my TV to see what time the Mariners play, and I can’t find their game!!

  18. Chris NY

    i like it

  19. Thomas

Hopefully, Wang has work hard on these off days so that he is not too strong on his start. His problem, as of late, is that he has been getting the fastball up in the zone and it is getting smashed.

  20. Mike S.

A small surprise, since Matsui is 0 for 9 vs. CC and CC is tough on lefties.

Anyone who thought in July that should the Yanks rebound to make the playoffs that the postseason roster would include Joba, Veras, Duncan, Sardinha, Ohlendorf and Veras raise your hand.

    I thought so.

  21. Mike S.

    Sorry, mentioned Veras twice.
