Workouts on tap for this afternoon

Peter Abraham
October
3

The Yankees have a workout scheduled at Jacobs Field at 3:30. Their clubhouse opens to the media at 2:30, so I will be headed over there in a little while. The Yankees arrived here last night.

Joe Torre and Chien-Ming Wang will have formal press conferences this afternoon. The Wanger is no fan of these but he handled himself well last season before Game 1 against Detroit.

While working on a story just now, I was researching Joe Borowski. The numbers are not pretty for the pride of Bayonne, N.J. In seven career games against the Yankees, he has allowed 15 hits (five homers) and 12 runs in seven innings.

He has faced the Yankees five times in the last three years and allowed nine runs on 10 hits (four of them home runs) in five innings.

But Cleveland does have excellent set-up men in Rafael Perez and Rafael Betancourt.

I just hope the boys stay true to form and have a patient approach at the plate. It seems the times the team has gone flat offensively this year have been when they get first-pitch swinging happy.

CLE middle relievers don’t scare me much. Getting Sabathia and Carmona out after 6 inning (preferably 5) is the key.

    Work those pitch counts boys!

  2. Evan

I really hope the series comes down to him. Both teams are pretty similar: good patient lineups, a dominant setup man, good pitchers for games 1 and 2, questionable pitchers for games 3 and 4. It’s gonna be close, and being able to steal a game in the 9th may be the difference.

  3. chris in fairfield

i just got word on the red sox / angels game tonight …
    1. vlad to dh
    2. no chone figgins
    3. no garret anderson
    4. no gary mathews .
    5. and no colon at all .

  4. CY Yang

Go Wanger! Let your pitching does the talking!!

  5. jennifer 27 in 07

Geez looks like we would have been better off facing the Angles. The soxs wills team roll them.

  6. Jim Clark

Is Borowski the second most famous person to come out of Bayonne?

  7. Reflaxion

    * Getting Sabathia and Carmona out after 6 inning (preferably 5) is the key.

I doubt it’ll be all that easy with Sabathia. He frequently goes 7-8 innings.

  8. mel

    Chris,

Colon & Matthew I heard about. Vlad to DH, too. But no Chone or Anderson is news. Lackey has horrible #s at Fenway, too.

  9. Armand

I just want to say.. I’m watching Skip Bayless right now on ESPN First Take.. he is absolutely insane.. what the hell is wrong with this guy!? He predicts that Arod won’t even have a SINGLE RBI.. and that the Yankees will flameout.. This guy is annoyingly pretentious.. i was shouting at the TV.. lucky that show ain’t on HD.. I might want to punch him..

  10. Global Warming

I don’t want to hear about how players have done against the Yankees. I repeat I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT.

What short memories some of you have. *Kenny Rogers* people!

On a second note, I am really worried about Wang pitching on the road potentially twice in this series. For some reason he is not the same pitcher.

  11. Kill-Schill(ing)

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Sunday in NYC.

Is this something we root for? A cancellation would postpone Games 3 and 4 one day and allow both Wang and Sabathia to pitch Game 4 on Tuesday.

I know everyone is terrified of Carmona. But given his performance last year as a closer, I’m not convinced he has the constitution and poise to be dominant in a pressure situation. Sabathia worries me but the Yankees seemed to handle Carmona on that Friday night in Cleveland during the regular season.

This is also the first year Carmona has pitched 200+ innings. In 2006, he only threw about 100 IP (combined in MiLB and MLB) and in 2005, 173 innings combined in AA and AAA.

Any thoughts about whether to root for a rain-out?

  12. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Having Bartolo Colon would have hurt the Angels. He seems to have completely lost his game. I know that he continues to have elbow and/or shoulder trouble. I’ve always thought that he was too heavy.

The Yankees had success against Carmona last time and while Sabathia has great numbers this year, remember that’s he not bulletproof or untouchable. And Wang and Pettitte aren’t exactly a couple of no-name journeymen.

  13. Global Warming

“Getting Sabathia and Carmona out after 6 inning (preferably 5) is the key.”

Um no that isn’t the key. Cleveland has an equally good middle relief.

  14. Global Warming

“This is also the first year Carmona has pitched 200+ innings. In 2006″

    Tell that to 07 Verlander.

Kill Schill: I went to the rain out game last year. It sucked. We had to sit around for 3 hours, then go home when they finally postponed it til the next day, then the stadium was only like 1/2 or 3/4 full. It didn’t have a playoff game feel to it, really. I mean, it was my first playoff game, so it was still awesome, but it didn’t even have the buzz of a Yankee/Red Sox game.

  17. wood is good

It will have to rain for 14 hours Sunday before MLB postpones a playoff game.

  18. chris in fairfield

    hey global !!
wang on the road is a little bit worrysome but would you rather have pettitte and clemens at the jake then wang at home for game 3 ( you know how torre says games 3’s are pivital ) ? or do you go with your #1 ( wang ) for the first game ?

  19. Gayle

Weather for MOnday does not look good either

Sunday (24 hours): A few thunderstorms possible. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s.
Monday (24 hours): Occasional showers possible. Highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 60s.

  20. Kill-Schill(ing)

Trust me, Andrea, I realize what a tremendous inconvenience a rain out poses but I’m willing to endure it, if it benefits the Yankees. They Yankeees (and their fans) got screwed last year because MLB scheduled that Game 2 at 1:00pm and Zumaya was throwing 100mph in the shadows.

    I don’t know when they would re-schedule a rain-out this year however.

Global Warning, if you recall, the Tigers shut down Verlander last year for a month before the playoffs precisely for that reason; he was suffering from a fatigued arm. What’s more, he was less than totally dominating in that first game against the Yankees as a consequence. He was better than Mussina, of course, but hardly unhittable. Damon went deep on him, if I recall, and his fastball was down a few mph’s.

I’m not taking anything for granted. But I remain cautiously optimistic about the Yankees prospects against Carmona.

  21. Global Warming

Chris in a perfect world I’d line the starters up Pettitte, Clemens, and Wang. I know this seems a bit loony but that would assure Pettitte for a Game 5 on the road and Wang a start at home.

In reality though you have to give Wang the nod in game 1. He’s had an outstanding year and is our ace, hopefully he gets rid of his road demons. Clemens uncertain status doesn’t help either…

  22. Carmine

Sabathia’s a big boy because of all those innings he eats. He’s the kind of guy who will pitch 7-8 innings even in a poor start where he gives up 4-5 runs. He’s just that kind of a pitcher that can put a bad spot behind him. The best way to beat him is to have your starter outduel him because he’s not likely to get rocked. In his career, he is 1-7 against the Yankees with a very unflattering ERA, but they haven’t seen him in a few years so that almost means nothing. Then there’s Carmona, a tough lineup, and IMO the best bullpen in the AL. It’s not going to be an easy series by any stretch.

  23. Andrea

Kill Schill: but that was my point–wouldn’t it NOT benefit the Yankees? If we had to sit around wondering if they’d play, so did the players, including Moose, and we know how much he likes wondering if he’s going to pitch.

  24. mel

Isn’t Westbrook the scheduled Game 3 starter? I take my chances with him pitching. Actually, if we can win 3 games against Cleveland, I won’t ask for anything else…this week.

  25. MJL

    Armand -

I don’t consider Skip Bayless a human being, and you shouldn’t either.

  26. Bosco

The major issue with Carmona is that he’s just like Wang, a groundball pitcher that doesn’t strike enough guys out and is therefore inconsistent. Just like Wang, if the defense is good behind him and he gets a little luck, he’ll be tough. Otherwise, he’ll get rocked.

  27. MJL

There’s only a 30% chance of precipitation on Sunday, it’s still early so lets hold off on the wishful thinking of Wanger pitching Game 4. Also I have Game 3 tickets and wouldn’t be able to make it if it’s postponed to Monday, so that simply can’t happen.

  28. mel

I heard that Skip Bayless got run out of Dallas for his constant dumping on their pro teams. It got really ugly.

  29. Wolf In Pinstripes

Armand, I can’t stand Bayless either. I’m surprised other commentators don’t punch his lights out, to be honest with you. It’s all a show with guys like him – be loud, obnoxious, offensive, and unapologetic about it. It’s almost as if they pattern their personas off of someone like Dr. Cox on “Scrubs”. LOl

  30. Wolf In Pinstripes

Yeah mel – Bayless was the one who suggested Troy Aikman was gay, for one thing.

  31. Doreen

A rainout won’t benefit the Yankees, because no one will show up at the stadium the next day, and they effectively lose their home field advantage. That’s what happened in game 2 last year, at least one of the things that contributed to that ho-hum loss. (The Loss wasn’t ho-hum, but the play was.) And if it’s Moose who’s delayed (same pitcher as last year, by the way) that’s not good either.

  32. Bosco

Bayless just does what he was hired to do. Say controversial stuff with no factual basis and piss people off. Not really sure why anyone bothers to pay attention to him anymore.

  33. MJL

    Wolf-

Dr. Cox at least has foundations for his rants. Bayless constantly just thinks of what the most outrageous scenario possible is, and uses it as his own prediction. But hey, he fits in perfectly with the rest of ESPN’s personalities!

  34. Bob from NJ

Perez and Betancourt are 2 of the top 5 relievers in the entire league. All this nonsense about Cleveland’s bad middle relief corps is just that – nonsense. Borowski is awful but he will only pitch in save situations, which aren’t necessarily the most important or high leverage situations in the game.

  35. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Skip Bayless and Jay Mariotti are cut from the same cloth, the same exact cloth.

A rainout would sap any energy and momentum that the Yankees had built up, just like what happened last year. When you’re winning and things are going well, the last thing that you need is to take a break and to have to worry about Mother Nature.

  36. mel

Really, Wolf? He must know with the name ‘Skip’. What does it matter, Troy has more talent in his pinkie than that Skip. He won 3 Super Bowls?

Speaking of PC, I’m going to repost this link. Mixture of pettiness, venom, baseball envy, and there’s a dig at Sheffield in the Joe Torre entry.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....ortCat=mlb

  37. Wolf In Pinstripes

LOL – well said, MJL. :D

  38. Bob from NJ

A rain out would not benefit the Yankees. I was scared to death of the Indians in a 5 game series with an extra days rest – that means Sabbathia and Carmona will pitch 2 games a piece and Perez and Betancourt can pitch in basically every game. Luckily the Red Sox picked the longer series. The less rest, the better for the Yanks.

  39. Onkel Bob

    Armand, Wolf et al…
Bayless is from Texas, ’nuff said?
He was a writer here in the Ess Eff Bay Area until he was run out of town by the local radio tag team of Ralph and Tom on KNBR. They constantly exposed his know-nothing stance and as such made it difficult for him to peddle his wares here. Fortunately for him, ESPN has a lower threshold for knowledge and values controversy over intelligence. ESPN, after all, employs Steve Phillips.

  40. Armand

at least i know i’m not alone in seeing this Skip entity as an a$$.. Skip Brainless..

I really don’t feel that Carmona is a threat.. if he flamed out in the closer role, he might not do to well under playoff duress.. esp considering every inning is like a 9th inning anyway.. I like our chances in this round. Positivity!!!

  41. Wolf In Pinstripes

Too true, mel – none of what these guys say matters. I think they realize that too, and they are just up there as entertainment mouthpieces. Like Bosco said – they do what they were hired for. Oddly enough, ol’ Skippy isn’t very popular with the ESPN brass either. Check out the wikipedia page on him. I looked that up to confirm what I thought he had said about Aikman, and it’s interesting to see how he is perceived by his own network’s bigwigs –

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skip_Bayless

  42. Gabriel

Until Cleveland wins one game agains the Yankees this year…we OWN them…and we will carry that confidence and our talent to a quick series against them. IMO, Indians win ZERO or only 1 game this series,,,then we prepare for our next victim ( either the Angls or Bston will suffice )

  43. Bronx

The major issue with Carmona is that he’s just like Wang, a groundball pitcher that doesn’t strike enough guys out and is therefore inconsistent.

If Wang and Carmona are inconsistent, who is a consistently good pitcher? There can’t be many of them around the league.

  44. mel

Am I the only one that thinks it’s funny that the more Cleveland talks about the 0-6 record against the Yankees meaning nothing the more it starts to mean something?

  45. Armand

nice find there Wolf, but i don’t like the one line that says

“substantial number of fans praise Bayless for his eloquent analysis, willingness to espouse viewpoints not commonly considered by others, and the professional manner by which he conducts himself.”

when has this happened? I have not witnessed this!

  46. Rocco

    From the Skip Bayless wiki:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skip_Bayless

“Because of his relatively brash claims and stances, Bayless has been publicly criticized by some high-profile sources. Le Anne Schreiber, the ESPN Ombudsman, criticized him for being so “absolute” in his arguments and for yelling too much on TV [1] and ESPN columnist Bill Simmons has taken multiple shots at him in his columns. PTI personality Michael Wilbon called Skip Bayless “a moron” for his belief that someone should verbally challenge Tiger Woods through the media. Although Bayless was removed from ESPN’s regular columnist network, he still holds a position with the company as an analyst on the ESPN2 sports talk program, ESPN First Take. His network demotion has not seemed to affect his sizable popularity among viewers, for better or for worse.”

  47. Armand

how unfair is it that people like Skip Bayless get paid to do this kind of drivel? and i mean, constantly..

  48. migames

skip bayless is to sports what bill orielly is to news

  49. Armand

cannot be put more rightly migames… kudos..

  50. Wolf In Pinstripes

I agree Armand. Unfortunately, there are people out there that eat up that kind of behavior and think that taking an unpopular view makes someone “bold and courageous”. Come on – shooting off one’s mouth like a jack@ss and belittling the subjects that help you earn a living is not exactly the makings of a Nobel Prize hero.

  51. Doreen

    Mel -

Wow – just read the story you linked to. I don’t know how you write so scathingly against one particular team if you are a reporter, unless it’s for a local paper, a small local paper at that. The bias and nastiness are truly not called for.

You know it’s truly funny (not ha-ha funny, ironic funny). The Yankees get clobbered in the hometown papers AND in every other domain. Is there anywhere, anywhere a body can go to read positive reports on the Yankees?????

  52. mel

“He continues to provide analysis, generally considered sub-par and often ridiculous, usually commenting with insider-type perspective from the executive and former player sides of discussions. He has claimed that 10 different teams would make the NL playoffs because he often flip flops his choices based off how well that team is doing at the time.”

Found this in a wiki search of someone else from ESPN. Guess who?

  53. pat

    Who is Steve Philips.

  54. mel

    Doreen,

Simmons is not a reporter, he’s a “columnist” so he was more rope to hang himself with. He’s a card-carrying member of the Red Sox Nation, but he’s toned it down this season because he’s convinced that he was personally responsible for Boston’s collapse last year. He said the division was won already when Boston got off to a hot start last year.

He’s o.k. and actually very funny in a self-deprecating way. Now his Laker hate really gets under my skin.

But did you catch the Gary Sheffield joke? He actually tried to put a disclaimer in there. Hilarious!

  55. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Survey says- our “expert and former GM.”

  56. Rocco

    Doreen,

I was just thinking the same thing reading that “25 people to watch in AL playoffs” article. ESPN needs to hire an anti-Bill Simmons that watches every yankee game (Bill admitted in the article that he watches every Red Sox game) and knows what he’s talking about.

  57. Doreen

    And another thing…

Every other team’s hometeam broadcast crew is clearly pro-their team. Homers every one of them. There is nowhere a Yankee fan can go and get that. Not that you want it all the time, but when criticism comes from every angle and every outlet, it would be nice if every now and then someone would openly root for the home team. The only guy that comes close is Mercer.

Truly, I appreciate the professionalism that Yankee broadcasters bring to the booth in NOT being blatant homers; I’m just saying, once in a while, it would be nice.

  58. pat

    Doreen

That’s why they say if you can make it NY, you can make it anywhere. Lots of critique, little love and a big dose of what have you done for me lately is the life of someone in the public eye in NY.

  59. mel

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner, Pat!

Surprisingly very little substance to the article. One very juicy tidbit that I had not been aware of, but may explain his LOA in 1998.

  60. Doreen

    Mel -

I did catch the Sheffield joke. I wasn’t sure if it was anti-Sheff or anti-Joe, or maybe he just killed two birds with one stone, so to speak. :)

I guess if one is not a Yankees fan, what he wrote could be looked at as ascerbically witty. But then there does absolutely need to be another “columnist” who can go toe-to-toe with him and take jabs at the Red Sox.

  61. Doreen

    Pat -

Yup. That is so, so true. The highs are heavenly, but the lows are hell. And, everyone’s a critic, as you said.

  62. Rocco

cal ripken just said he wishes he was derek jeter.

  63. Doreen

A lot of people wish they were Derek Jeter. :)

  64. mel

    Doreen,

That’s why we fans have to stick together. The broadcasters have to be extra careful, and even Michael Kay has openly said “If us Yes broadcasters said [what those guys said] about our team, can you imagine the [flack] we’d get for it?” O.K. that was a really bad attempt at trying to remember what he said, but basically he was saying they have to bend over backwards to not be homers because it is the New York Yankees. And if you think about it, it is an embarassment of riches. It’s like money, if you got it you don’t need to talk about it.

  65. Gayle

Please remove Frank Thomas from this program right away he is awful

  66. MJL

Simmons is the worst…no idea how he’s had all this success.

  67. Rocco

    mel,

I see your point, but Kay shouln’t get excited when the other team hits a home run. I don’t want him to be like the white sox announcers, but at least don’t make us fans feel worse when something we don’t like to see just happened.

  68. Gayle

FYI if anyone is interested in watching the press conferences you can via yankees.com and click on the link where it says postseason press conferences they start at 315

  69. saucy

    mel,

i think i remember that from Kay. didn’t he mention the white-sox announcers?

  70. S.o.S.27

I wish I had Derek Jeters black book with all the hotties he went out with. Offcoarse being able to date them just by making a call.

    Jeters god.

  71. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Gayle- You’re right, the Big Squirt is off to a rough start as an analyst. He comes off as bland and unsure of what he wants to say. It doesn’t sound like he will make much money as a public speaker after he retires! :) Just my opinion.

  72. mel

    MJL,

Simmons enjoys great success @ ESPN *because* he’s a Yankee hater.

  73. Gayle

J Dawg soright if y ou are a postseason analyst you need to give an answer not be indecisive and worry about next year. he could not answer if Holliday was safe then didnt answer who is better lackey or Beckett. Why are you there if you dont give your ompion as you faced them both this year

  74. mel

Why did Ripken say he want’s to be Jeter?

  75. Rocco

Because he’s been in the post season every year.

  76. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Gayle- Right, I also prefer the honest and hard-hitting analysis, not the indecisive, beating around the bush stuff.

On another note- It’s already apparent that TBS will play John Mellencamp’s “Our Country” on EVERY commercial break during the postseason. Be ready!!

  77. mel

    Thanks, Rocco

Would those games have counted in his consecutive game streak?

  78. saucy

those games should count against his consecutive game streak!

  79. Gayle

J Dawg the reason is that it is called The CHEVY pre game show Chevy is sponsoring it. I would think during the game it will not be the case lol

  80. Jeff NJ

Re positive articles, read Joel Sherman in the NY Post today. Not sure where some people got the idea he is anti-Yankee, I think he is very fair and if anything leans towards us. His article is about how win or lose, he is not going to blame A Rod. There would be no postseason without A Rod. He’s right.

And then there is Lupica. The guy writes one article about the Mets saying how they were unlucky. I think the only reason he addressed the Mets at all was because the Daily News paid for him to go to the game, least he can do is write a story. It was very hard for him to write an article with out his hilarious line “Family Guy Clemens”. He is back to pressuring A Rod and the Yankees today. I don’t how this guy still has a job.

  81. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Ha! Maybe it won’t play so much during the game. I’m a proud American just as much as the next person, but I’ve heard that song far too many times!!

  82. Gayle

Ok complaint number 1 you need to show the player introductions for game 1 in these series. yes I know it takes away from your commercial endeavors BUT it is a big deal and special part of postseason

  83. jennifer 27 in 07

How exactly were the Mets unlucky? They played one game under .500 since June 1st? They were lucky the Phillies let them hang around that long.

  84. Gayle

feed just came up for the press conferences

  85. MJL

    Mel –

    Good point.

  86. section 344

Bayonne in the house. yes Borowski is probably the 2nd most famous person to come out of Bayonne. Chuck Wepner is from Bayonne, and he knocked down Ali. Also we have 2 kids from Bayonne at college right now in Jerome Hayes at Penn ST and Kenny Britt at Rutgers.

  87. Yankees Chick

Cleveland’s pitching is scary, no doubt about it. And it is definitely true that fact that the Yanks swept them in the regular season really means nothing in the post-season; they didn’t even face CC all season and obviously they will both be trotting out their top rosters. I DO think, though, that the regular season sweep will help the Yanks walk into the series with a little extra confidence.

  88. DMan

It’s whole new season now.. The regular season numbers lie sometimes when it comes to the post season..

  89. Gayle

Wow Ohlendorf and veras make the postseason roster

  90. Rocco

    Olendorf is a good thing

  91. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

    Hey Yankees Chick,

I enjoyed reading about your tussle with those nasty Red Sox fans.

  92. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

    I posted this yesterday.

I might have one extra ticket for Game 4. Tier Box MVP above the Yankees dugout. I would just want to get my money back.

If anyone is interested, I’ll know on Saturday.

    Thanks.

  93. Bosco

I can’t think of any situation I’d be happy seeing Ohlendorf or Veras in the postseason. Maybe if we’re up 20-0, but that’s it.

  94. jennifer 27 in 07

Can someone post the roster for us poor souls stuck at work?

  95. Jeff NJ

Jennifer, I agree, the Mets were not unlucky, they were bad. Good riddance.

As for the roster, where are people seeing it? I am glad that Ole made it if that is true. He has looked good. Did Villone make it too?

  96. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

I like the idea of Ohlendorf on the postseason roster. He will bring the element of surprise. He also got good experience in pitching at Fenway Park, which went a long way toward getting his feet wet.

Note: Rockies up 3-0, bottom of the 2nd. Could be worse, Matt Holliday struck out with the bases loaded.

  97. Gayle

I am listening to the Torre press conference on MLb.com he went through the roster as well as the starting lineup I didnt write it down (lineup) or full roster I am sure Pete will have it up as soon as the press conferences are over.

Like I said things that stand out

    Sardinia
    Ohlendorf
    veras

Villone and ramirez are off (Joe said that after thinking and discussing about the left hander bullpen option) that it was unanimous to not go with Villone and a lot of it had to do with the fact that they really didnt go to him in crucial lsituation in spetember (through no fault of his own) and talked about control (which sort of in my opnion doesnt make sense with veras)

  98. Yankees Chick

I’m wondering how everyone is feeling about Matsui and his knee trouble… Torre says that he will probs be used as DH, so its good that he wont be in the outfield (and we are lucky that we have plenty of people to play outfield these days), but I worry about him even DH’ing if he isn’t feeling 100%. Thoughts?

  99. Jeff NJ

I don’t think Matsui’s knee is an issue. To be honest Damon has generally looked better in left than Hideki. My biggest concerns in this series are the lefties getting to Sabathia, the middle relief not named Joba and Mussina in game 4.

  100. jennifer 27 in 07

Wow this really is the new Yankees, the old one would have brought on Villone because of the expierence. Which leads me to believe that they would go to Hughes first in an emergency situation,. only because he has done better than Mike as of late.

  101. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

I’m with Torre DHing Matsui; I prefer Damon in left.

  102. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

“Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe) –
look at your name. youre the kind of fan she was ranting against. thats irony.”

No, my name is strictly for comedic purposes. I am not the type of fan she was ranting about.

  103. Global Warming

    “Sardinia

    Villone and ramirez are off”

    B-E-A utiful!

I’m glad that Ramirez is no where near the postseason.

i find it difficult to take the playoffs seriously because of all the days off and a five game series. in the regular season , the good teams are identified. i’m not sure what the playoffs identify. what were the cardinals last year? they certainly were not the top team in baseball. making it a crap shoot where anyone can win may bring in more casual fans, but i’d like a playoff system that actually identifies the best team. having an 8 day series where a team only uses three starters is a joke. teams should have to play every day and use their whole staffs.
i naturally hope the yankees run the table, but if they do, what does it really mean? you could put tampa bay in the playoffs and they could do the same thing. it’s just a poorly designed system that is dumbed down for the casual fan.

Yeah, Jeff NJ, plus Damon’s been hotter at the plate than Matsui lately. Although I never discount Matsui’s hitting – and maybe the break, mentally, is a good one — he can regroup at the plate. He’s one of the lefty hitters I don’t usually worry about facing a lefty.

I’m pleasantly surprised Ohlendorf made the roster. I thought he’s looked good, and his stuff is a bit different. Lots of rookie arms here – Hughes, Joba, Ohlendorf and possibly Kennedy if they get in the next round. Wow. Veras, though – I haven’t really been all that impressed, but he doesn’t look like he has the capacity to melt down that Ramirez has shown. Ramirez — either very good or very bad, and I guess you can’t take that chance at this time of year.

I heard Torre’s press conference, but he said the lineup very quick (gm 1). Does anyone have it?

  107. Jeff NJ

No Duncan or Giambi in the lineup for game 1. Matsui as DH.

  108. saucy

Randy L, couldn’t agree more. especially the pitching.

  109. Matt

    Who follows A-Rod??

  110. Jeff NJ

I think I heard Posada batting 5th after A Rod, that is the right move.

    Jorge batting 5th is perfect.

  114. Global Warming

You would be right Jeff NJ.

Sweeny Murti just confirmed it on WFAN.

  115. Matt

    Thanks

I got a request yesterday for photos of Tom Brady wearing a Yankees hat.

Background: He was photographed sporting a Yankees hat in West Village on May 2nd with his grrl, Gisele Bundchen.

Disagree on the lineup- would’ve opted for Duncan IPO Matsui for game 1, but in the scheme of things does it really matter?
The Yankees come well armed and if the offense performs at 90% of what they’re capable of and the starting pitching gives them a decent 6+ innings, the Yankees will emerge victorious.

Any predictions out there?? I say Yankees in 5-games, with a loss in the first game. As far as I remember Wang hardly ever pitches well on too much rest- he is too strong so his sinker doesn’t sink.

I’m ok with Matsui at DH just on GP, but if he struggles you have to give Duncan a shot. I was surprised to see Duncan not get the call in game 1 myself from what we’ve been hearing, but then again, we’re not able to find out how Godzilla is feeling or looking in person since having his knee drained.

Angels are going to roll over in this series, they look as capable of winning as Britney Spears does of opening a day care center…..
