Yankees get their workout in

Peter Abraham

As this exclusive grainy cell-phone camera photo shows, the Yankees are working out at Jacobs Field.

Roger Clemens, by the way, says he feels fine. Here’s the audio of his chat with us in the clubhouse:

Here’s a little Derek Jeter:

In terms of other news, Joe Torre said the decision not to have a lefty in the bullpen was not difficult. They didn’t use Ron Villone much down the stretch in games they needed to win., Why would they use him now? Several of their RHPs have good splits against left-handed hitters anyway.

Chien-Ming Wang handled himself quite well in front of a packed interview room. His parents are coming from Taiwan for the game.

Hope Wang’s parents get plenty of sleep!

  2. Joe

Wanger is man. I hope he does well with his parents in the house. He defines “Cool as the other side of the pillow”

    Go Yanks!!!!

  3. jennifer 27 in 07

Is this the first time his parents will see him pitch? I hope he won’t be too nervous pitching in front of them.

  4. grafxkid

Oh Dear God No. I hope he won’t be nervous pitching in front of them. NOT NOW!!!

  5. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

Phillies just hit back to backers.

    3-2 Rockies.

  6. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

That is a great story. It’s great that his parents are able to see him pitch. They must be so proud! I know that as a Yankee fan that I am definitely proud of the pitcher that he has become!

  7. new girl

Any audio from Wang’s press conference?

  8. FAH - Bring it back in 2007

    How Sweet! :)

I believe this is not the first time his parents see him pitch in major league. But it is probably the first time in the playoff!

    GO! NYY! GO! Wang!

  9. james

Hey Pete who if anyone does Wang hang out with now that his road dog Meyers is no longer on the team.

  10. Julio

Check out PhilipHughes.net/forums tonight and tomorrow for an upcoming contest in which you will have the opportunity to win a Phil Hughes signed 8×10, as well as a Joba Chamberlain signed card.

  11. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

I think that with most pitchers nerves would be an issue, but not with Wang. He doesn’t get nervous. I am sure that if he would have been too nervous that he would have asked his parents not to come. Wanger stood his ground in last year’s playoffs and I’m sure that he will do a great job tomorrow!

  12. Miller

Ill tell you what. Everyone and their mother said the Yankees weren’t making the postseason this year. And now everyone and their father are saying the Tribe will take the series.

Im feeling pretty good right now.

  13. saucy

gotta love the grainy-cell phone pics from almost upper deck, behind the plate… vintage abraham!

  14. RollEZ

Lol did anyone hear the end of Jeter’s aduio? You hear someone say “Hey guys we got Rocket over hear.” and in mid-answer Pete gets up and walks away, I guess to get the scoop on the Rocket for us. It was just funny.

  15. Phil - 27 in '07

Verducci on the FAN with Mike and the Mad Dog just brought up a great point regarding the bullpen:

With all of the off days, Chamberlain and Rivera could be used for up to 12 outs in a game. That’s 4 innings, 2 each. Throw in the Viz and you won’t see Veras, Ohlendorf, or Farnsworth in any close situations, according to Verducci.

  16. Yankees Chick

    Interesting point Phil…

The one thing everyone worries about with Torre is his bullpen management, and rightfully so. Let’s all hope that Mattingly and the Gator guide him CAREFULLY…

  17. Dr. Acula

_Any audio from Wang’s press conference?_

Nah, no audio, but will video do??

_You Give Us 2-Minutes And We’ll Give You Da’ Wanger!!_

    He’s shy, and that’s cute.

  18. Dave

i dunno why everyone thinkgs the yanks leftie hitters and bad against lefty pitchers – matsui’s splits are pretty much the same against lefties and righties, Cano actually hit better against lefties this yr. Abreu hit 262 against lefties – not good but not awful. Damon’s career splits are even and hit better against lefties this yr. I know sabathia is tough on lefties but the yankee hitters arent too bad against them. Mienky was horrible against lefties this yr but we arent really starting him for his bat …

  19. Doreen

    Dr. Acula –

THAT WAS AWESOME! Thank you so much.

I’m very, very impressed by Wang’s English and the way he handled himself. No interpreter!

  20. Andrea

Doreen: Wang hasn’t had an interpreter for a while. That impresses me quite a bit.

  21. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

Does anyone think that we could used a roster better than Bronson Sardinha. I am sure we could use a pinch runner but surely there was someone faster or who had more value like maybe Gonzalez as a defensive replacement at all the infield positions. I would have even preffered to have another reliever rather than waste a spot on Sardinha. While we were at it, why didnt we give Felix Escalona a roster spot too?

  22. barbados

If we get leads in these games, I expect to see plenty of Joba, maybe to an alarming degree. best spot for him to enter the game (IMO) is first sign of trouble, 6th inning on. he is the man to extinguish fires (and then start the following inning). from there it’s Mo for 1+ with maybe a sprinkle of the Viz. Really gotta hope the Viz is sharp (we’ll need him). I doubt we see Farns, Ohlendorf, or Veras with a lead, but it doesn’t mean we won’t need them to come up big in close games for us.

  23. Doreen

    Andrea,

I did not know that. I’ve never seen him interviewed before. I don’t think I’d do quite so well in a different country — speaking anyway. I have a great admiration for anyone who comes to our country and learns at least enough of the language to be able to communicate in every day situations. To any country, for that matter.

  24. Felipe from Brazil

thanks for wang’s video Dr. Acula! Awesome stuff!

  25. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

By the way, Matt Holliday just homered (off of Tom Gordon). Rockies up 4-2, midway through eight.

  26. Dave

i like sardhina on the roster – we need speed off the bench. Thnk redsox and roberts in 2004. Without him, the yanks would have won that series. I like gardner better but he isnt on the 40 man which sucks. He shuld be on merely for speed purposes – he is the fastest runner in the organization.

  27. CY Yang

    Dr. Acula –

Thanks for the video. That’s our Wanger!

He and the Yankees got a whole nation behind them!

Yes, let CMW speak his most comfortable language – baseball tomorrow!

  28. Dave

I love how gordon went to philly and left the yanks to be a closer and now he is an eighth inning reliever – ironic

  29. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

Dr. A- Great video of Wang! He’s definitely from the school of the soft-spoken. He has the right attitude and a firm head on his shoulders.

  30. Andrea

Doreen: agreed. It’d be impressive if he answered all the questions even with a translator by his side, but he does everything without a translator at all. I can’t remember if he had a translator at all last year, but he hasn’t had one at all this year. It’s hard enough for me to learn Spanish and French, and they use the same alphabet we do. Can you imagine learning Chinese?

I like Sardinha too. When you have a pinch runner, that’s really all they’re for. He’s good at running. What else do you want from him?

  31. migames

tom gordon, picking up where he left off

  32. DMan

Take your deep breaths and relax right now.. 24 hours from now, it’s time to get our game faces on!

  33. Yanksta

Speed is good!!! I like the roberts comment!

    Yanks crush tribe!

  34. Vicki

Here’s some news… A-rod’s having another baby! Good for him…

  35. Dave

Can someone post an article that says kennedy is out of the alds roster due to back problems and that he may start in the ALCS? I cant find any recent article that talks about kennedy, his back problems, why he isnt on the roster, that he may play in the ALCS or anything of that nature.

Lackey is already sucking. I thought they should have starter escobar for the first game. Lackey has been their “ace” the last couple of seasons but i never thought he was all that great. Escobar has a career yr and always had the stuff to be an ace – he finally showed it this yr. Missing Colon is really hurting the angels. Colon, Lackey and Escobar sounds so much tougher than Lackey, Escobar and Weaver.

  36. Sherri

Dave – I remember reading somewhere that Kennedy was sent to Tampa for rehab, and possibly inclusion in 2nd round – is that not right?

  37. jacob

“I love how gordon went to philly and left the yanks to be a closer and now he is an eighth inning reliever – ironic”

Um, that’s not irony. But hey, school learnin’ fo anotha day, amirite?

  38. Rockin' Rich 27/07

Thanks for the video, Dr. It was just great to see and hear our guy.

(In honor of CMW, I’m going out for dim sum tomorrow for lunch.)

  39. april

I think Wanger hangs out with Joba quite often (Joba even kissed Wanger and said: “I love you Wanger” during the celebration the other day!)
Indeed, they are extremely 2 different types of persons.

Here is what Joba said “We’re two totally different people, but for some reason, I can get him to talk. When he would miss one of my calls, he’d call back and say, ‘Joba, you called. What do you want?’ I’d tell him I just wanted to say hello.”

Is A-Rod the only Yankee that has a daughter? As far as I know, Posada, Farnsworth,Joba all have a son. Clemens have four and Pettitte has three. Even ex-Yankees, Cario and Proctor, have a son. I am just curious.

  41. gayle

Posada has a boy and a girl
