Damon later said this:

“We just can’t panic. We need to come in here and be the same team we’ve been for the past four months. It’s only one game. They need to beat us two more times and the last I saw, we’re a pretty good team.”

    Damn straight Johnny.

    Remember guys, Don’t Stop Believin’

  2. Dave October 4th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

posada needs to step it up – im surprised he did so poorly tonight and swung at bad pitches – he had one of the best post-seasons of the team last yr and a career yr this season and certainly wasnt slumping last week. Matsui and Melky sucking tonight was no surprise- matsui is hurt and was horrible the last couple of weeks. Melky hasnt hit in a month besides one game, he shouldnt even be starting in the playoffs. The lineup tomorrow should be damon jeter abreu arod giambi posada matsui duncan cano. No bunching up of lefties and matsui can bat seventh instead of fifth so arod wont be pitched around.

Leadership like that is why Johnny Damon is so important to this team. He’s been there before, he knows that it is only one game, and that we have plenty of life left!!

  4. Dave October 4th, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Talk is cheap jonny – this team didnt show tonight any of the good team that they are.

  5. Jim Clark October 4th, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Tomorrow is Andy Pettitte who has post season success wired into his DNA. Losing game one is not a good thing but it isn’t
    a knockout.

  6. Dave October 4th, 2007 at 11:31 pm

im not worried about pettitte but the yanks really need to come out swinging tomorrow- carmona as just as good as sabathia this yr – not a lefty granted but still pretty damn tough.

  7. Carmine October 4th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Carmona was very good this year, but Hughes did outpitch him when last we faced him. We need a quality 6-7 innings from Pettitte to hand it to Joba and Mo.

  8. Carmine October 4th, 2007 at 11:46 pm

I also don’t see how Posada wasn’t part of the Yankees dynasty. He was more or less platooning with Girardi in 98 and 99 and our everyday in 2000. Drove in 86 runs in 2000 as well. Not too shabby for a backstop.

^ignore above, meant for other thread

Johnny Damon, in the 1-in-a-billion chance you will ever see this comment:

    THANK YOU!

Put perfectly. I’m sitting comfortably in my room, far, far away from any ledges.

Would you like to join me?

BTW, Everyone check out how clever the title is on Becca’s latest blog post. Clever and literary, a very formidable combination. Keep up the great work and catch some squirrels tomorrow.

Kill Schill–Hah! Thanks! Headlines are my favorite part, so I’m glad you like =D

I am negative that I start to dislike myself…

But tonight there was plenty of reasons to be negative!

Horrible all around. Could not have been worse!

I’ll use your optimism for now, because I don’t have any.

  14. whoa October 5th, 2007 at 12:14 am

    Damon > Matsui

  15. ray(sox fan) October 5th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Over and over again I have seen the Yankees lose the first game of a playoff series and still win the series, so I still believe the American League finals will be between the Yankees and the Red Sox (although I am very aware that the Angels will not be giving up anytime soon).

  16. Dr. Acula October 5th, 2007 at 12:19 am

you know why F.D.R. is our greatest president? cuz he repealed prohibition!

nothing like some Brooklyn Ale to chase away a headache.

    Okay, batter UP!

  17. Darrin October 5th, 2007 at 12:21 am

Trying to be optimistic here….. A couple of days ago I posted what I thought was a realistic “scenario” for this series: Indians behind Sabbathia bust up the Yanks in Game 1; Pettitte wins a tight Game 2; Yanks win a wild, high scoring Game 3 back at the Stadium; Indians down 2-1 get desperate and pitch Sabbathia on short rest in Game 4 and Yanks win with a late rally.

    1 down….3 to go.

On a more “analytic” note, if the Indians are gonna hit .600 with 2 outs and RISP, the Yankees don’t stand a chance. Baseball series tend to have a “flow” to them though, and we’ll see if those numbers don’t balance out a bit.

I’m not in the least bit panicked. Yet.

If Andy ends up being just “ok” tomorrow, don’t be surprised if Torre pulls out all the stops. I can see Pettitte potentially being lifted after 5 and then Joba for 2 and Mariano for 2. With all the off days and rest, this could be a viable scenario.

  18. keith October 5th, 2007 at 12:25 am

wait i figured damon would blame A-Rod. After all, he DID go 0-2.

  19. Darrin October 5th, 2007 at 12:27 am

ray(sox fan): That is true. The Yanks lost game 1 of the ALDS in 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2004 and won all of those series. I can remember the panic that ensued in ALL of those series when they dropped the first game. The time during that 5 year stretch that they won the first game (2002) they ended up losing the next 3 games in a row!

True, that does not mean they’re guaranteed to win this series, but baseball is a game of confidence. Believe me, the team knows about all the historical statistics. Hopefully, it gives them confidence that they can come back.

  20. Rich October 5th, 2007 at 12:28 am

in a three game series, the quality of the starter tends to go down and the liklihood of a win behind your starter goes down.the yanks get better as the the games get deeper. howver, i predict yanks lose tomorrow, lose the series in 4. cc will pitch again next week much better the tonight.

I have seen several comments about Wang’s record on the road. What is his record at home versus on the road this year? Just curious.

  22. Dr. Acula October 5th, 2007 at 12:33 am

geez, it’s an early game tomorrow 5:07 EDT.

  23. Dr. Acula October 5th, 2007 at 12:34 am

They must be freak’n out in Chicago.

They’re not sayin “Loooou” – they’re sayin “BOOOOOOO!”

  24. Dr. Acula October 5th, 2007 at 12:39 am

    Wang

    ERA
    @ Home 2.75

    @ Road (grass) 4.16

  25. E-ROC October 5th, 2007 at 12:59 am

I think Wang will pitch game 4, IMO. He might be more effective pitching on short rest and at home. I thought Duncan should have started against CC, but it is what it is. Go Pettitte! We got this. Go Yanks!

  26. E-ROC October 5th, 2007 at 1:01 am

I might actually stay up for tomorrow’s game. It’s at midnight here in Turkey.

  27. SJ44 October 5th, 2007 at 9:43 am

The team showed up last night. Wang didn’t.

Its easy for the entire team to look bad when your starting pitching is awful.

The playoffs are about pitching. They aren’t going to pound the ball like they did in the regular season. Its not how it works. The opposing pitching is much better. The Yankees have to match it . Last night, they didn’t.

Its a 4-3 game in the 5th, they have momentum, and Wang wasn’t able to get the job done. That’s the game.

If Pettitte pitches well tonight, they have a great chance.

If not, tee times will be in place next week.

Somebody has to step up and pitch like they aren’t afraid of the moment. They have the best possible option in that regard going tonight. Just have to hope he can get the job done as he has in the past in these situations.
