In a bizarre game, The Yankees were beaten by the Indians 2-1 in 11 innings.
A swarm of “midges” had an impact on the game.
So far it has been another rough postseason for A-Rod. This notebook also has updates on the lineup, Bob Sheppard and Derek Jeter.
If there’s a Game 4, Chien-Ming Wang could get the call.

joba didn’t get the job done. no excuses. bugs obviously bothered him, but other guys did fine with those same bugs. he’s not the reason we lost though. although he blew the lead, the overrated disgrace of an offense only managed 3 pathetic hits. fire torre asap after the yanks get swept.
After we win Game 3, I fully support the idea of starting Wang on three days rest. He’ll be in a better rhythm, he’s a better pitcher at the Stadium, and hopefully this will allow him to get lower in the strike zone.
The offense will respond in Game 3. This team has the potential to be great, and a great team responds when their backs are against the wall. They are also not ready to see the last of Roger Clemens yet. Put the factors together of the season ending and Clemens retiring, and being in front of their home crowd. Those factors will all inspire the offense to kick it up a notch. Let’s hope that we will see Roger start at least two or three more times!!
Pete – how come everyone else has A-Rod 4-47 since Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS and you have 4-50?
Who’s right?
There will be a game 4. Andy Pettite pitched 1 for the ages, put that team on his back. There is no way in HELL we lose this next game. Andy gave that team everything he had and I am 110% sure the Yankees that showed us heart and strength this season will show up sunday. Last night I was almost in tears, I will never forget how Andy pitched last night. Its also very weird how things aren’t goin the Yankees way. Joba has been so automatic for us, who woulda thought BUGS would of been our downfall? No way. We’ve got something to prove and we are going to fight until the end. Sunday night we’re going to root for our Rocket and root for our god damn team. I have never been so hopeful in my life. The Yankees are going to play for their lives.
LETS GO YANKEES!
Lawnmower: If if you look at Game 4, he was hitless in his final 3 at-bats. So both are right.
this team is finished. 57 year old clemens will get lit up like its the 4th of july. bank on that.
Reposting from previous thread. I posted there too late.
A few points:
1. Joe Torre is plain clueless. When the bugs were swarming like that it did not even occur to him that he should ask the umpire to suspend the game for a few minutes. Whether the umpire would have agreed or not he should have tried. It is no different from not bunting against Schilling during bloody sock game.
2. To Peter and all…thinking that Posada and Mo will leave if Torre is not brought back (not fired as he has no contract for next year) does not make sense. Just because Joe leaves they will just go to a foreign place and deal with all strangers – players, coaches organization. Common on, show some commone sense.
3. A-Rod, I want him back, he is great player. He is having a funk in October for now in New York, though his overall post season stats are not that bad. Yanks will offer him a very good pacakge. If he is still looking for the msot money and opts out, he should be let go. Yanks can always trade surplus pitching prospects and get a young 3B, as there are no realistic options in FA.
4. For all those who bash A-Rod for his failures in October, what about Joe Torre’s failures in October for even much longer period. Also, at least in this series, how about the failures of all other offensive players including Jeter. So, stop picking on A-Rod alone.
5. I am still hopeful we will win this series. If we win convincingly on Sunday, the tide will turn around.
BBFan,
what are you talking about: “Joe Torre’s failures in October”???
any manager working now in the MLB or any wannabe manager would take Joe Torre’s failures along with his triumphs any day over any record that they themselves have assembled. No manager is perfect and I for one, am sick and tired of the Torre bashing. If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t even be in the post-season now. is there any other manager out there that has accomplished as a manager what Torre has? Mike Scosia has been deemed the best manager, but what has he won? NUTIN!
Excuse me, I along with legions of other Yankee fans have a right to get on A-Rod. All year this guy ran his mouth through his agent Scott Boras about how he wants a new contract, will opt out to seek one, wants $30+M/yr., etc., like he’s worth that money when he isn’t because he hasn’t produced when it counts the most: in October, the postseason.
A-Rod is 0 for 6 including 3 popouts and 3 strikeouts in this year’s A.L.D.S., the true mark of a scared bi tch choker which is what he is with his embarrasing hyperventilating at the plate and never shutting his mouth after a poor game. Say “no comment” or shut up then play and execute. I don’t want to hear that you’re pressing, this, or that. Did Scott Brosius ever hyperventilate? A-Rod wants all this money (when he already got $252M guaranteed) after this year, he should earn it cuz he hasn’t cuz posting 54 HR and 156 RBI in the regular season is just negated by a sad-sack 0 for 6 with no balls hit out of the infield, outs on contact 3 out of 8 plate appearances, and 4 for 50 with ZERO RBI since the 2004 A.L.C.S. Who cares about 1987 Andre Dawson or 2007 Carlos Pena? Who cares that the Seattle Mariners finished 116-46 in 2001?
The Yankees should let go of this overpriced postseason choker and sign Mike Lamb to be the 3B for a year and $4M cuz Lamb can’t possibly su ck in the postseason as badly as or worse than A-Rod. Let’s say the Yanks get swept or lose in 4 and A-Rod doesn’t drive in a run. Even if the 2008 Yanks got knocked out of the postseason in the A.L.D.S. yet again, say in 4 games, and Lamb went a paltry 1 for 15 with a walk, 10 strikeouts, and one RBI, he, a guy under contract for only a year and $4M would have one more RBI than A-Rod drove in after (A-Rod’s) homerun in Game 3 of the 2004 A.L.C.S. That’s how badly A-Rod su cks in the postseason.
“Don’t blame A-Rod, the rest of the team didn’t hit or do anything”, blah blah blah well you know what? WRONG. He was the only one to have RISP last night and he failed miserably: 2 strikeouts. Melky hit -he hit a solo homerun, did his part. He saved a run with his arm. Abreu got a hit, stole second to set up an RBI single for A-Rod last night. Abreu drove in a run in Game 1. Jeter got a hit last night, that’s more than what most Yankees have done in this series. Cano and Damon hit solo HRs last night. Shelley Duncan got a pinch hit and scored a run in Game 1. What’s A-Rod done?
NOTHING.
To all you people who say the 2007 Yanks wouldn’t have made the postseason because of A-Rod: If the 2007 Yankees get knocked out of the postseason in the A.L.D.S., A-Rod will be
Reason #1 simply because of his postseason choking since 2004. His poor postseason negates what he did in the regular season because the whole of the season, not just the regular season is what matters, it just is, deal with it. Bill Buckner had a solid career and 1986, but he will be forever known as the guy who let the ball roll under him in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Bonds will forever be linked to steroids, cheating, etc. Trevor Hoffman will forever be known as the biggest chokeartist reliever. On the other side, Scott Brosius will forever be known as a guy with limited talent who made the most of his opportunity to play every day and win and executed.
Oh b.t.w. ever heard of Chien-Mien Wang who won 19 games and Andy Pettitte who won 15 games? Take away either guy and A-Rod is the 2007 version of 1987 Andre Dawson. Thankfully Wang wasn’t a one-year (2006) wonder and Andy wanted to come back.
A-Rod is on his way to being the Dan Marino of M.L.B. and not even cuz at least Dan got to the championship game. I can’t even call A-Rod the Jim Kelly of M.L.B. because Jim got to the big dance 4X and missed winning in one of them by
a few feet. A-Rod isn’t even Bonds cuz Bonds went to the World Series.
Wow. It’s getting a little scary in here. Peter, you may have to post some anger management resources just as a public service lol.
Jeter’s future wife
Oh please here are at least 14 guys before Torre who got the 2007 Yankees into the postseason:
Wang, Pettitte, A-Rod, Rivera, Jeter, Posada, Matsui, Abreu, Chamberlain, Hughes, Cano, Cabrera, Vizcaino, Dunca5, Mientkiewicz (defense mostly)
Scrapheap pickup Aaron Small, reclamation project Shawn Chacon, and Kevin Brown injury replacement callup Wang saved Torre’s as s in 2005. Go check their stats then tell me what Torre had to do with any of them. Torre had nothing to do with theor success save no-brainer pencil them in -he lucked out with them just like he lucked out with Joba this year.
Yeah, it’s sooooo tough calling in Mo then Wettleland;
Mendoza then Nelson/ Stanton then Mo; Joba then Mo.
It’s so hard to pencil in Knoblauch/ Jeter/ O’Neill/ Williams/ Martinez/ etc. with Brosius batting 9th.
yeah, the deal with people getting on AROD is b/c he is playing with the largest contract in baseball history and yes, great, he had an outstanding MVP regular season, what did that win us? It won him the MVP most likely, but what did the team win? so far, nothing but a spot as the wildcard, which I understand that is better than 26 other teams playing all season, but those players aren’t playing with the largest contract andhthen wanting more by opting out. if AROD doesn’t perform Sunday and then if we play MOnday either, if he had any class, he wouldn’t opt out and play with the contract he negotiated years ago b/c he knows he didn’t get it done. I don’t understand how the extra money will chanage his lifestlye, but sticking it out under your current contract with your current team could possibly change his life…..
joba had Flies all over his flabby carcass…sweating up a storm on the mound and blowing it big time…I LOVE THIS GAME!
Choke Rod
This may be too much logic for you to handle but….basball is a team sport.
Using your example, while I appreciate the contribution that Petitte and Wang have made to this TEAM, neither Petitte nor Wang have 0.0 ERA’s or have struck out every batter they faced. That means someone got an RBI in a game they pitched in order for them to get the win. Someone made a play behind them to get an out. This year many of those someones was A-Rod.
I hope you are as passionate about something else in your life as you are about A-Rod. If you do, you must be a very successful person. If you don’t, find it quick because you are wasting talent and energy.
what I mean by Torre getting us to the postseason, is that given the infamous 14.5 GB, he never talked down to the players, somehow stayed calm and never paniced, that this is a long season and just take it one day at a time. no finger pointing, etc. I really do believe, no matter what you believe, that he is responsible for the comeback…I’m entitled to that
Jeter’s future wife
I agree with you that if Arod has class he would come back to the Yankees and obviously would still make a very nice living. I just wonder how much influence his agent Scott Boras will have on Arod. Scott Boras is notorious for pushing his players to explore all their options to go for the top dollar no matter what. For example, he is JD Drew’s agent and he somehow convinced the Red Sox that he was worth a boat load of money which I think a lot of people would disagree with.
I disagree that class has anything to do with contracts. If someone offered you a job for $5000 more than you were making now, would it be unclassy to take it? $5000 probably wouldn’t change your tax bracket or give you a different lifestyle. Would you tell them you don’t deserve the raise because you missed a few deadlines or didn’t turn in assignments? Taking it one step further, if your boss found out about the offer and offered you $10,000 to stay, would it be less than classy to take it because you were making $10,000 less for doing the same job last week. Class has nothing to do with contracts.
How ’bout for once giving credit to an opposing player instead of hating on our guys. Yeah they ALL sucked at the plate, not just A-Rod, but that is because a tremendous pitcher with great moving stuff, made great pitches all game. Except for Melky’s blast, he never put the ball up in he zone or over the fat part of the plate. 19 Groundouts. A-Rod actually had a good at bat at the end, fouling off good pitch after good pitch, with Carmona never giving in & finally prevailing.I was hoping after the great year he had A-Rod would finally maintain that great relaxed demeanor he showed this year in the post season at long last, but it appears he has let his demons win out so far. I’m hoping there is still a chance. I hope fans will chant MVP instead of boo him Sunday & spur him on, as he did finally win over his teammates & fans alike this year, & this is our last shot. We need him to win & here hoping he will finally come thru & stay a Yankee for life. Go Yanks.
since every other yankee player has been on fire this postseason, it’s clearly A-Rod’s fault that they’re down 0-2. How ’bout Matsui or Posada’s 0-7s, including both making outs in huge situations with the bases loaded? No, let’s take a tiny sample size, hammer A-Rod, and then watch as the best hitter in baseball walks after this year. It’ll be like the Chargers and Norv Turner–incensed at watching Marty Schottenheimer’s teams underperform in the playoffs, the Chargers replaced him with a coach who guaranteed they wouldn’t be back. Pretty much the same deal here…
