Wang up next; Clemens can be replaced

Peter Abraham
October
7

Chien-Ming Wang will pitch tomorrow.

The Yankees can replace Roger Clemens on the roster tomorrow. It’s a new rule. The catch is he would not be available for the ALCS. They have four choices: Kennedy, Ramirez, Britton or Villone.

Joe Torre said it was being discussed.

Quote of the night from Johnny Damon: “We’re playing for a manager that we love. We’re playing for fans that we love. So we’d like to prolong the season as long as we can.”

  1. Andrew

Clemens is done. Hughes takes his spot in the rotation, Kennedy takes on the role of long relief. Unfortunate, but you’ve got to win the games in front of you.

  2. Greg

Clemens should be able to pitch out of the bullpen for the ALCS I think

  3. EricNS

Well said Johnny – I thought old age gave GS some maturity but he still thinks this is football – just sign the checks George and keep that fat mouth shut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Sylvia

    Kennedy should replace Clemens.

  5. eric

gotta be Kennedy if he is healthy

  6. YanksFanLV

What a game. I was in the sportsbook @ the Venetian. I’m pretty sure there were only about 3 other Yankee fans there, and about 200 Yankee haters. The first 3 innings were no good, but I stuck to my guns, and then I got to celebrate to a silent crowd. It was awesome.

    Go Yanks

  7. KurticusMaximus

Greg- No, the new rule is you can replace an injured player on the roster, but that player can’t come back in the next series. So if the Yanks replace him with somebody, he’s out for the ALCS.

  8. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

I imagine Moose is available for long relief if need be.

I don’t want to see anyone but Kennedy–who should be fresh from his honeymoon…replacing Rocket.

  9. hoho

Peter, any word on how moose feels about this?

  10. Tim

    Yeah..Wang will pitch tomorrow …

But as the official site of Yankees ..the starter is Moose

Who is the exact starting pitcher for tomorrow’s game?

    Fans from Taiwan

  11. Sherri

    Gotta be Kennedy.

  12. Mike Ashmore

Not so sure I like this rule. The guy’s a starting pitcher, seems odd he can be replaced in a series.

  13. nate c.

    team – what a win.

rebecca – well done with the optimism.

    buster olney – shut up.

  14. CGramazio

Kennedy’s been away for a while now and probably not quite ready, I’m betting it’s Villone. Torre likes Villone’s make up and he could come in handy against some of their lefties. Then they bring Kennedy in for the ALCS.

  15. JT

ANYONE INTERESTED IN 2 SGL TICKETS FOR TOMORROW NIGHT?
1 IN TIER 4 THE OTHER IN TIER 13
    FACE VALUE

  16. Andrea

Tim, and anyone else asking: Wang is pitching tomrrow. Torre announced it. Yankees.com (and we all know ESPN) has been known to be wrong before.

  17. Sherri

I figured they would use Wang for game 4, but what about game 5? Can Pettitte pitch Game 5?

  18. Jeff C

Wang’s record on 3 days’ rest?

  19. zack

Im very happy that Joe Torre has corrected the mistake he made last season when he did not send out CMW on 3 days rest for ALDS Game 4. CMW is going to come out strong and with something to prove, and he has great stats pitching at home. Also, I don’t think you can trust the moose in a must win situation like this and pettitte is an excellent pitcher for a game 5 if the yankees get there. Also, I am extremely happy that the yankees will not have to face fausto carmona again in this series, because he SHUT THEM DOWN and sabathia did not look sharp. Paul byrd hopefully will give up a few runs and if CMW is his normal self, a few runs should be plenty. The bullpen will be a little weak tommorow, with Joba almost certainly out after throwing 30+ pitches, so they will need CMW to go deep. Its going to be interesting. Cant wait to see what happens.

  20. Andrea

    JT: Id be interested

  21. JT

    andrea

    what is your email?

  22. MJL

Yeah who’s it gonna be tomorrow? Pete says Wang, yankees.com says Moose…either way I’m not exactly confident.

On something completely off-topic, does anyone know what the intro song for Matsui is the first time he comes up? I know the 2nd 3rd and 4th times are the Kill Bill song, TNT, and Kashmir, but I’d like to know that first one and it’s bothering the hell out of me.

  23. MJL

JT I’m also interested, what’s face value?

  24. 56Bomber

Not sure if I would add Kennedy to the roster for the Division Series. I think doing so would make him unavailable for the ALCS…which Clemens will also likely miss due to injury. I know we have to win the ALDS first but not sure we’ll need IAK in game 4 with both Wang and Mussina ready and I doubt very much that Joe would use him if we make it to game 5. I’d rather have IAK on board for the ALCS – a 7 games series. I’d probably go with Edwar.

  25. we miss paulie

What exactly is wrong with Roger anyway? Did anyone specify why he left the game?

  26. Jim Clark

Go with Kennedy. Joe said that “Moose is comfortable” with the Wanger pitching tomorrow. A hamstring injury is two weeks off. Good bye Roger. Thanks for trying. I’m sure you will console yourself with the $19 million you made.

  27. Andrea

    jt: al147966@gmail.com

  28. JT

    $58 each

    $116 for both

  29. 56Bomber

Roger in a postgame interview said he “locked” up. Not sure exactly what that meant… but he was referring to his hamstring.

  30. gayle

only 2nd time on 3 days rest he pitched that time 4.2 innings in relief

    clemens strained left hammie

  31. JRVJ

    56bomber,

Perhaps you know something I don’t, but I thought that what Pete was implying is that if substituted, CLEMENS would not be available for the ALCS (not his replacement).

I also would go for Kennedy, but not so much for tomorrow, but for Game 5 (arguably, Mussina and everyone else is the replacement for an ineffective Wang or a long game).

  32. Sherri

Clemens gave it everything he had. You really can’t ask more than that. The time he’s spent with the young guys IMO is invaluable. Thanks, Rocket!!

  33. pat

If they add Kennedy to replace Roger, it’s Roger who isn’t available for the ALCS. With his hamstring he’s not going to be available anyhow.

  34. MJL

Damn, thanks but no thanks, I’m gonna try and get free tickets through work tomorrow, otherwise just watch on TV.

  35. 56Bomber

    JRVJ,

My bad – I guess I read too much into it. I think they’ll go with Kennedy unless his inning count is too high.

  36. KurticusMaximus

The new rule is, if Clemens is replaced this series, Clemens is not available for the next series. Whoever replaces him is available though.

Previously, if a player was hurt mid-series, he couldn’t be replaced. Under the new rules, injured players can be replaced with another player of the same type (a pitcher must be replaced by a pitcher, a position player by a position player, etc), but the trade-off is that the injured player is unavailable in the next series (which shouldn’t be a big deal if the player is injured- I think this is just to prevent teams from abusing the rule to effectively expand their roster).

So, assuming Clemens is hurt, he can be replaced but that means he couldn’t appear again until the WS, if NY gets that far. At this point, though, I’m not sure Clemens has any juice left. The guy has guts, but guts only get you so far.

  37. scarletknight64

You dont have to bring Kennedy up to use him in the next series. I think you are allowed to change the roster each round. The injury rule is a different consideration. So its possible to bring in a reliever for Clemens. Disqualify him for next round and still change the roster.

So for example, they could activate Villone for Clements and drop say Ohlendorf and activate Kennedy for round 2.

I could be wrong but I think that’s the way it works.

  38. whoa

They may love Torre, but that’s irrelevant. His bad managing has cost them for too long.

I think they are playing for themselves, which is a good thing. They have been choking in the postseason since 2004. Hopefully, they got the junk out of their collective systems tonight and will play like they do in the regular season.

  39. Shirley

    Well said, Johnny Damon.
If Kennedy’s back is no longer a problem, I go for him.

  40. Tim Chen

    Hi..Sherri ..

Andy will be game 5 starting pitcher…Sure

    Hi..Andrea ..

    Yes,,Wang for tomorrow’s game..

It’s my deep hope Wang can pitch long ..then Kelly and LV will follow Wang’s inning…

my MSN enkidu0830@hotmail.com I am the fans from Taiwan

  41. Chofo

That hamstring ended the Rocket great career. He deserves some respect, specially after trying to do his part.

  42. HALLELUJAH HOLLA BACK!

Honestly, you gotta take villone. I know we all love Kennedy but if using Kennedy for this series means he misses next series (if we get there) is too big a risk.

Also, Villone is a lefty and Torre likes the lefty option in the pen against ppl like Hafner, Sizemore, etc.

  43. Bob from NJ

Hold out for the chance the Rocket can pitch in relief in the ALCS. If Kennedy is healthy, he should replace Veras for the ALCS.

  44. Bob from NJ

I’m glad they are going with Wang tomorrow. But using Joba for a 2nd inning tonight with a 5 run lead was idiotic.

  45. whoa

    Villone stinks.

  46. Bob from NJ

Villone is terrible, there is a reason Veras was chosen over him.

  47. Carmine

Anyone know Wang’s numbers on 3 days rest? And Pettitte would have 4 days rest for a potential Game 5.

  48. Stuart

I use Minky Tommorrow because of Wang…

I replace Clemens with Loser Villone.. IF they get to the next round Kennedy replaces Clemens and Hughes gets the ball.

Hughes 21 got a playoff victory, not bad considering many of the experts on these blogs thinks he will be pitching in AAA next yr.(those people have no minds)……..

Joba can go 1 Monday and Mariano will do what he has to do, Moose in long relief.. get to game 5 and deal with it………………………

  49. Stuart

wang has pitched 1 game on 3 days rest in the playoffs in relief agains the sux, he pitched pretty well..

he will be fine only threw 80 pitches and loves pitching at home, all is fine in Yankeeland..

  50. Carmine

Speaking of Minky tomorrow, he’s 6-19 in his career against Byrd. Giambi’s not as good, so looks like a good choice in Doug on both accounts.

  51. randyhater

Not only should we add Kennedy, he’s the only guy I’d use tomorrow in relief before Joba in the 7th and Mo for the 8th and 9th. If I were Cashman I’d ship Veras, Farsworth, Ohlendork and Mussina ahead to Cleveland just to be sure Joe doesn’t call their number.

I’m expecting big things from Wang. There is no way he craps out twice in a row. Coupled with the fact that Eric Wedge (the same genius who pitched to Arod with an open base in that walk-off game back in April)is channeling his inner Torre and going with his “trusted guy” Paul Byrd over Sabathia on short rest, I think Game 5 is as close to a lock as you will ever see.

By the way, where’s all the backstabbers who wanted to push Matsui down a flight of stairs in favor of that sweaty has-been Giambi? I guess they’re all busy now throwing dirt on the Captain.

  52. Carmine

Wang actually threw 94 pitches in Game 1.

  53. Bob from NJ

Chamberlain isn’t going to be available tomorrow. He was exhausted by the end of the 8th. Farnsy should have came out for the 8th with a 5 run lead.

  54. Carmine

Who ever though Jeter and Posada would be the least potent hitters in our lineup for the division series? Jorge’s just looked awful.

  55. Chicago Dave

Didn’t Byrd shut us down in the Division Series against the Angels a few years back?

  56. Vader

Wang has only pitched against the Tigers and Angels in the post season.

  57. Carmine

    Bob:

I agree completely. I figured they’d bring in Farnsworth for the 8th. Get Mo warming if anyone got on base and bring him in at the first sign of trouble. No reason not to warm him up as they brought him in the 9th anyway. If we’re going to have any sort of success even just over the next 2 games, we’re going to need to some degree to be able to rely on relievers not named Mo or Joba.

  58. Bob from NJ

Who cares what Byrd did years ago? He’s at best a league average pitcher. We should feast on him tomorrow. We need to jump on the Tribe before they can run the Rafaels and Jensen out there.

  59. Vader

And the Indians counting this year.

  60. mel

Wow, the excellent adventure continues. Great contributions from Damon, Cano, Hughes, and Matsui.

Also very glad that Alex was able to get the monkey off his back.

Hoping that Wang can come out tomorrow and pitch a great game. Otherwise, Mussina should be able to pick him up. I feel better with Wang/Mussina rather than Mussina/Wang. Mussina has experience with successful long relief.

Was not happy that Joba was in for two, but as long as it doesn’t hold him back tomorrow, that’s o.k.

Anyone that dumps on Roger is not a true Yankee fan. He could’ve packed it in months ago and collected his pay, but he believed he could do it. His body wouldn’t allow him to.

Roger is done, and he should be replaced by IPK.

Thanks, guys, for the link to the SI article on Joba. I didn’t cry, but pretty darn close.

Play tomorrow, win tomorrow. Go Yankees!

  61. Bob from NJ

Farnsy could have handled the bottom of the order and Mo could have jumped up like he did when Joba got in trouble. Could be a very, very costly mistake. I hope we don’t see Farnsy or the Viz in a high leverage situation tomorrow night.

  62. Kill-Schill(ing)

Anyone know what Wanger’s numbers are on 3-days rest?

  63. Chicago Dave

Bob – Yes, obviously the Yanks need to jump on Byrd. However, they should have feasted on Westbrook from the first batter, and it ended up being a struggle in the early going. Needless to say, hopefully tonight’s hitting carries over into the first few innings of tomorrow’s game. If we don’t get to Byrd early enough, Wedge will bury us with all his best bullpen guys.

  64. randyhater

We kicked Byrd’s candy-ass up and down River Avenue in Game 3 of the ‘05 ALDS. Only problem: Angels kicked R. Johnson’s ass even further.

He’s garbage and will not make it out of the 3rd inning.

  65. Bob from NJ

I hope no one is trashing the Rocket. He’s the greatest pitcher of all time, and he did as well as his body would let him. I applaud his effort. Great move by Clueless Joe pulling him when he did and going to the Franchise. I dislike Torre and think he should be gone, but he handled The Rocket well tonight. Good move there.

  66. Carmine

Paul Byrd started Game 3 of the 2005 ALDS. He got a no decision and his line was 3.2 IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, and 2K. We also pounded him earlier this year where he lost to Mussina in what was probably Moose’s best outing of the year. His line there was 2IP, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 1BB, 1K. We’ve hit him well in the past, so let’s just hope the lineup can keep up what it got going tonight. Byrd’s no slouch and he’s not going to roll over and die because of how we’ve handled him in the past.

  67. Chicago Dave

Everyone clamoring for Clemens to come back for the ALCS…Did you actually watch him pitch tonight? He was struggling mightily with his control, and his velocity wasn’t great, either. When he did get pitches in the strike zone they tended to be very hittable. This is what happens when an injured 45-year old tries to pitch against a potent lineup…Not pretty!

I think Clemens’ career is officially over (or, at least, it should be!)…

  68. Bob from NJ

Chicago Dave – we just had some bad luck early tonight against Westbrook, we couldn’t string any hits together. It was only a matter of time, though. I hope it will be the same tomorrow. I can’t believe Wedge isn’t going with CC. Then Carmona could pitch game 5. That’s terrible managing I think. Another good move by Clueless Joe going with Wang on short rest. I must be losing my mind.

  69. Anthony

Gotta go with Villone. Ohlendorf has already shown the risk of putting in a rookie. Luckily Hughes and Joba have been able to handle it. Kennedy can wait until the ALCS if we get there. For the time being, I think it’s more likely that we need relievers over more starters. Villone has had some time off and can probably come back strong for an appearance or two and with all those lefties, we should have a lefty. Next series drop both Ohlendorf and Veras and pick up Edwar and Kennedy.

  70. Chicago Dave

Carmine – Thanks for the stats on Byrd. That ‘03 Division Series was so bad that I guess I just remembered every single Angel doing awesome against us…My bad!

  71. catya

Damon how about a win for the owner who’s finan

  72. Chicago Dave

Bob – I, for one, don’t mind Wedge’s decision to go with Byrd one bit! ;)

  73. Jack in Taiwan

Let’s go Wang, Let’s go Yankees!

I have great faith on Yankees, Wang & Pettitte will have a good start in game 4 & 5. Let’s just enjoy the game and see how yankees overcome.

  74. Carmine

I looked up Wang’s numbers on 3 days rest in the regular season. He has never started on 3 days, but has relieved and his line was 4.2, 6, 2, 2, 1, 2. He apparently has also started on 2 days rest? I imagine that was after a relief appearance. His line there was 7, 8, 1, 1, 2, 2.

  75. catya

Damon how about a win for the owner who’s financing the two million dollar payroll

  76. Carmine

    Chicago Dave:

Yeah, as far as series eliminations go though, that series wasn’t so bad. We didn’t play terribly. We were in it up until the 9th inning of Game 5. It definitely wasn’t as bad as the 04 ALCS or last year’s ALDS.

  77. JT

    1 TICKET STILL AVAILABLE
    FACE VALUE
    TIER 13

  78. Chicago Dave

Let’s hope that Wang can somehow keep his cool for a change with men on base. Regardless, he’ll have to pitch with a lot more focus and composure than he had in Game 1.

  79. Bob from NJ

I can hear the announcers/read the stories now. “Wang has so much pride, he was so upset after his game 1 performance, he wants to represent his country/family/people well, he has SO MUCH PRIDE. HE’S ASIAN!!!!THEY’RE SO PRIDE. HIM AND DAISUKE. SO PROUD! HE WILL PITCH WELL OR COMMIT HARI KIRI”

I love the subtle racism when announcers discuss Asian players.

  80. Love Foul Pole Squirrel

    For those who are interested:

Wang only pitched ONE game on 3 days rest. That was on 5/29, 2005 against Red Sox. He came to relief Moose.
    His line was:
    4.2IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 2SO.

PS: Peter, anyone knows what’s up with Wang’s road/home split? Steven Goldman said it’s psychological. Do you hear anything from Gator?

  81. Gabriel ( Yankees Fan FOREVER )

I hear crickets, where I used to hear…….

  82. Chicago Dave

Carmine – You’re right…’03 wasn’t the worst! Still, hopefully this year will end up being much, much better!!

  83. Bob from NJ

I’ve read on baseballthinkfactory or somewhere like that that the reason is that the Yanks’ ground crew soften up the infield so Jeter and company can get to the grounders.

  84. Bob from NJ

For Wang’s home/road splits that is.

  85. Chicago Dave

Bob – Yeah, Jetes needs a little extra help to get to those grounders these days!

  86. Carmine

Yeah, I’m in stats hunter mode tonight. Kind of interesting that Wang had a 4.91 ERA away this year vs. 2.75 at home, but had a 10-4 and 9-3 record respectively. I guess that would mean he gets better run support when he pitches poorly, though that theory was absent in Game 1.

  87. Carmine

Reverse that: he was 10-4 at home and 9-3 away.

  88. Love Foul Pole Squirrel

    To Carmine:

The start after 2-day rest for Wang was followed his save in Baltimore last year. He pitched against Red Sox and won the game. His line:
    7IP, 8H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 1SO, 1HR(by Ortiz)

  89. Bob from NJ

Carmine – that’s just a certain degree of random variation over a smallish sample size (in reference to his run support). His home/road splits seem to be significant, though.

  90. Kill-Schill(ing)

I’m a little worried if he hasn’t done it before but I trust him more than anyone else but Andy, and he obviously can’t go.

  91. cc

Johnny D’s quote should be memorized by all the Yankee haters who think the team doesn’t have heart…

  92. catya
