Big Stein: No comment (and that’s too bad)
George Steinbrenner can do what he wants. He can talk to who he wants. He can fire who he wants.
But when he showed up at the game tonight, he refused to talk to any of the reporters waiting for him. The same was true afterward.
If he actually does feel fine, if he actually is in full control of the team, then he should park himself in the interview room and take questions. Tell us why Joe Torre is managing for his job. Tell us your plan to keep A-Rod. Tell us what you think of the kids on the team. Drop a few choice words on the Red Sox.
The Yankees drew 4.2 million people this season. Those folks paid a lot of money for their tickets, their parking spots, their cold hot dogs and warm beer. They deserve some answers.
Stop and talk, George. The people want to hear what you have to say now more than ever.

Chad Jennings
Sam Borden
Josh Thomson

Yeah, I wanna hear about how he wants Oliver Platt shot
He’s getting old. He may not be in perfect possession of his wits, and that’s certainly not a condition where you’d want to talk to a hoard of reporters. I hate to say this Pete, but lay off him. I know that you’re hungry for a story, but come on.
um actually im not waiting and holding my breath waiting for him to answer questions. he doesnt owe anything to you or anyone else. he speaks when he wants to and thats fine with me and most fans i know. as long as he spends billions putting a good team on the field thats all im concerned about.
Stein doesn’t owe anyone anything. No one forced those people to buy tickets. He doesn’t have to explain himself to anyone. Good for him.
you’re the man pete.
He’s in charge but i would like to know what his plan is. If he dumps torre, the core is going to leave to. What then Big Stein?
Pete,
” Da boss” will blow a gasket if he had to talk to the
press right now,he’s very upset with this team.Wouldn’t you
be upset too facing the uphill battle we have? It’s probably
these last few years, Yankees’ performance that’s effecting
his health. I KNOW IT’S KILLING ME!!!!!!
Disagree completely, Pete. You’re way off here. Every year he does all he can do (sometimes too much) to give his team the best chance to win. He has earned the right to do what he wants. He was just trying to get his boys (which are really his investments) fired up. There is nothing wrong with that.
Regardless of Big Stein’s intent, he did light a fire under the Yankees’ collective ass tonight. If he was using the Torre ultimatum to motivate the team, then mission accomplished. I’m looking forward to the Worm Killer back at home tomorrow night (or tonight, I guess) against Paul Byrd (who sure seems to remind Michael Kay of Kelsey Grammar). Hopefully they can get to him early and avoid the Rafaels. Let’s keep the optimism going. 27 in ‘07! And I’m out.
I also think you’re way out of line here, Pete. If anything, the players and coaches owe him some answers (which they provided a few of tonight) and us fans owe him some thank yous, for actually caring about putting a successful team on the field, and not just about the bottom line.
And you owe him a thank you for your job. If it wasn’t for Big Stein, the Yanks might not be so popular, and NY maybe wouldn’t need 10 beat writers, or however many there are. Be glad you’re not still covering college sports.
Talk about being ungrateful. As if spending $200 mil on a team wasn’t enough.
You could not be more wrong, Peter.
Are you really so naive to believe that George is fine when such a loquacious guy suddenly needs a filter in Rubenstein?
He doesn’t owe it to anyone to speak to the media at length.
With all due respect, Peter, it seems that whenever Torre’s job is on the line, you lose your objectivity and sense of perspective.
It’s very unbecoming.
Pete, why does Big Stein owe you something? What more does he owe the fans other than the $230 mil he shells out to put a competitive team on the field?
You should be grateful you have a job covering his organization.
I agree, it’s his team, he doesn’t have to answer to anybody.
Yeah, I don’t think an owner needs to have accountability in the sense of speaking to the media. If he is moving the franchise in the wrong direction(cough cough Angelos), then he obviously owes something to the fans. But really only managers and players owe anything to the media.
Pete has a right to his opinion, just like we do.
So I wouldn’t say he’s wrong. We can disagree with him, but I wouldn’t say he’s right or wrong in his opinion.
I would have liked to hear from Steinbrenner. Maybe not after this game–but definitely after the series.
Guys, Pete is a newsman, he is doing his job here. He wants the people to talk so he can write about it. When The Boss chats, it always makes for good stuff to write about.
I would like to know why one day he tells Torre he is managing for his job and the next day has no comment. Perhaps he isn’t well and what he said he didn’t mean and now is keeping quiet. We won’t know til someone tells us, be it the Boss directly or through Howard R.
Pete, I agree with you here. Sometimes I try not to think of George as a child in grown man’s clothes speaking loudly at those who he hopes can poor champaign on him after a championship.
Of course he has the right to say and do as he wants, he owns this organization, but really, let’s not forget this is an entertainment business and some semblance of acknowledgment to the fans and journalists who make his enterprise what its worth is not a bad idea.
It’s easy to cower behind the banners and owner’s box tinted windows and toss muddy words on people you are dissatisfied with, it’s a complete other thing to be able to face the bright lights and attempt to defend your thoughts through your own mouth not that of a press release or PR lackey.
The Stein of Old still lives!
Pete the yankees fan have a jewel of an owner. He is willing
to spend money when other billionaire baseball owners
won’t.
Also, all year he’s stayed out of this fiasco, and let
cashman and torre do their thing(when collectively
speaking.)
WE WILL HEAR FROM HIM SOON ENOUGH.
As Mr T would say “I Pity the fool”when he does speak!!!!
the hotdogs may be cold sometimes, but they sure are good Pete lol, and your right George should have sat down for at least a few minutes and answered questions.
King George Rules….
He cares as much about this team as the fans do. Name any owner like Steinbrenner. I wouldn’t trade him for the world.
Go Yankees!!
Mat,
if his health is an issue, one off the collar snide
question, could be incendiary to him.He will speak !!!!
Too bad this stein isnt like the one on sienfield.
And if you think the hot dogs at Yankee Stadium are cold, you should try a Fenway Frank. Those things are foul. They’re pink and cold as hell. They’re cylindrical bologna in a bun. Gross.
Pete, you’re way out of line here, buddy. Stein doesn’t owe you or anyone else a thing. He can do as he pleases. You’re lucky he’s around so you have a team to write about.
everything about fenway is gross, by no means just the dogs.
Peter, I disagree with you.
You as part of the media may want some answers but I really doubt the majority of Yankee fans give a hoot.
Steinbrenner doesn’t owe us anything.
Well maybe a calzone.
Hate to break it to you, but only a bunch of myopic Yankees fans feel that Steinbrenner acts in anything more than capricious and ego-centric way with his management of the team. Are you all saying there’s no right on the part of you, the Yankees fan base, to know WHY these sorts of statements are made or WHAT Mr. Steinbrenner’s vision for the future of the Yankees organization is (apart from more rings)? Perhaps you don’t want to think about it?
Nobody outside of New York City really thinks Steinbrenner does everything he can. We thinks he shoots the club in the foot.
You’re way off Pete. He’s an old fellow who probably isn’t all there all the time. It’s probably best for him not to speak publicly too often, and that is fine with me, and I suspect, most Yankee fans.
Let him have his old age. All his millions have earned him that, if nothing else.
He’ll talk when the Yanks win more than one game. What’s changed? It’s still must win . What’s he gonna say that he hasn’t already. Go Yanks 27 in 07′ Win one for the Skipper.
your entitled to your opinion!!!!!
Viva la Stein!
I agree with 12345 100%
“Tell us why Joe Torre is managing for his job.” Isn’t it obvious?
“Tell us your plan to keep A-Rod.” Pay him lots of money.
“Tell us what you think of the kids on the team.” Thank god for them or we wouldn’t be in the playoffs.
“Drop a few choice words on the Red Sox.” Tough to talk crap when they’ve advanced and we’re down 2-1.
No one cares what he has to say now. He already made his statement.
Wow, I didn’t realize there were so many Steinbrenner fanatics around here.
Even CEOs are expected to communicate to their share-holders every now and then. It’s not entirely unreasonable for fans to expect the same from their team’s owner, especially when that owner is as public as Stein is.
I can’t say I’m surprised he’s not talking to the press, but it’s not outrageous to wish he would. Nor is it fair to say “Stein doesn’t own anyone anything.” Steinbrenner has made his name on being a very public owner, and NY fans wouldn’t be out of line to expect that to continue. Especially after he issues an ultimatum like he did yesterday.
I have a question guys… is Steinbrenner making the money back?? Like, is he taking in a profit from this?
Hi Pete,
One of these days, you will be 77 years old and semi-senile. You won’t be worth a billion dollars or in the public eye, but perhaps there will be moments of lucidity where you recall your glory deals of beat writing during the wild ’00’s, and pontificate about how the Yanks were so much better in your day. And you will be humored by your family.
Steinbrenner has reached that point in life where it’s time to leave him alone. If he doesn’t want to talk, leave him be. If he wants to spout off, humor him. It can’t be easy for such a proud man to know that he isn’t what he used to be. No need to shove his deficiencies in his face.
I deserve no answers. As a fan, I only deserve that he does hit utmost to see the best team put on the field. Find me another owner that wants to win as much as he does.
Mr S seems to comment selectively. If he has his faculties about him he should sit down and talk to you guys. We have all earned the right to hear what he has to say. He owe$ us that much. It’s easy to blast people, shedding light in a thoughtful manner; not so much.
I think it’s fairly clear, Steinbrenner is not in control of all his facilities. Pete’s right to address this. Look, if this was the George Steinbrenner of old, the same George who loved the spotlight, he would have stopped and said something…obviously it’s not.
George is the lion in winter. Which makes me question the Ian O’Connor article even further. O’Connor, from what all of you say, is tight with Steinbrenner, the perfect herald to deliver a Steinbrenner message. I say Steinbrenner message, because perhaps Hal Steinbrenner was behind that message as well. George is fading, Hal is now taking over, but he still needs the leverage dad provides, who’s to say that he didn’t have a part in the relay of that message. From all accounts Hal wasn’t too into taken over the Yankees, but when Swindal was ushered out of the picture, he had to step up. Odds are he figures what worked for dad will work for me. We’ll put out an ultimatum, slap dad’s name on it and stir things up. I don’t know, maybe it’s far-fetched, but George is obviously no longer the Boss we once knew.
I’ve got to completely disagree with you here. Why does he have to talk to the media right now? Because we (the public) want answers? He just gave us the answers the other day. And, for the record, I’m one of the people that paid for about 25 games this year with the beer and the hot dogs and all that. Do you know why I paid for those games? Because George spent $200M this year to put a good product on the field.
George is dying everyone…and I’m not saying that for effect. He’s at the end of his rope. It’s been a great ride. He WIll go down in history as one of THE most influential people in spoerts EVER.
It’s all he has left. To react in any emotional way is what he wants. He wants a reaction. I have the most respect for him as a owner and businessman because of how he has made sure the Yankees stayed on top.
When was the last time we heard from him?
He might have most of his facilities, but he’s looking for reason to live. What he said about Torre gives him a spark.
Torre is the manager of the year. A-Rod is the MVP. But Stienbrenner might not see next year and this is the only way he knows how to be relevant. Let him.
Go Yankees.
Some of you are missing the point. George told Ian O’Connor and Pat Milton of the AP a few months ago that he feels fine and is in control of the team.
OK, fine. Then so what owners do and talk about the team. Don’t hide behind a spokesman or talk only when somebody breaks through.
The Yankees are what they are because so many people care. To me, the less secrecy the better.
I also had to chuckle when some people suggested I should be grateful to Steinbrenner for my job. Well, I don’t work for Steinbrenner and newspapers would cover the team whether he owns it or not. The Yankees were around for 60 years before he showed up and they’ll be around after he’s gone. I’d also be very happy to cover Division III baseball like I did once before. I like writing and baseball. In fact, once I make some money I’d love to find a small town on a beach somewhere and write a book or do some travel writing. The Yankees are a good gig but it’s not what I live for.
My job is not to appease the man, it’s to provide you with information. If he’s as lucid and in control as he says he is, then what harm is there in speaking?
Don’t be an apologist for a billionaire. You should want accountability.
If Steinbrenner had made a statement after the game or allowed questioning, would Abraham praise him for it? Or would he be like other two-faced dimwitted New York sports media types
(Lupica, Russo, etc) and rip him for “taking away the glory rightfully due Torre and the players”?
The man wants another ring. Whats wrong with that? If he doesn’t want to sit in front of cameras and reporters, he doesn’t have to. He’s earned the right to do whatever he wants in my book. The only accountability I want is a 27th championship, same as George.
george speaks with his wallet. the only accountability we want is getting the best players possible and george is always accountable in the department.
Yep Pete you are so cool. If the Yankee’s were a laughing stock and no one cared about them, you would be reporting on a girls highschool basketball team. No big diff right? So you do owe him some respect. Not showing any just shows your true colors. Doesn’t mean jack to me. I pegged you for who you really are when you talked trash about Darryl Strawberry for no reason.
If he wants to dress up in a clown costume and talk via text who cares? Not the fans. There’s no information we want or need at this time.
When he slashes the payroll to $50 million and they start bringing in scrubs then we’ll want accountability.
So because George told those people that he is fine, then now he has to speak about the team whenever the media wants? Firstly, of course he’s going to say he’s fine. That doesn’t take away from the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Secondly, he made his statements the other night. We just heard from George about his thoughts on Torre, A-Rod, the team, and the umpiring. Now we need him to clarify?
And by the way, I am almost always on the side of the media when it comes to these things. I just think in this particular case, given the obvious health conditions, you should give him a break. If this was George from even 5 years ago, you know as well as I do that he’d have spoken more. It’s not.
JLB, you sound like an idiot. If the Yankees were a laughing stock and nobody cared about them, Peter Abraham would still be working for the Journal News writing about the Yankees and probably getting paid the same amount of money. The only difference is the blog would be less successful and less people would read his articles.
“Some of you are missing the point. George told Ian O’Connor and Pat Milton of the AP a few months ago that he feels fine and is in control of the team.”
Do you honestly expect George to tell anyone for public consumption that he is declining, that his memory fails him at times, that he takes meds for it, and that he fears how much more he may decline in the future?
Come on, get real. I can’t believe you’re that naive.
George is free to talk when he and where he wants.
All you have to do is to read between the lines.
who cares what the owner thinks? you just want your quotes. no one really cares what the boss thinks. he’s so unpredictable that it doesn’t matter at all. he won’t be the owner for much longer, so it doesn’t really matter. let’s just win tomorrow!!!
>
He’s not as lucid and in control as he says he is; that’s obvious, and I’m fine with him pretending otherwise. The harm is in making a mockery of an old, proud man who is in the twilight of his years.
Your job is to obtain information that readers desire. I don’t desire Steinbrenner to be pestered for a cheap headline, and I don’t think I’m in the minority.
Someone just wants a story.
You’re not in the minority, NPT. It’s clear from these comments that you’re in the majority.
Leave the old man alone, Pete. He’s a human being, not a character in that book you’ll write someday.
Hey bogus whoa,
Find your own user name.
I tend to agree with Pete. If Big George can criticize, then he can say something when they do it right, even if it’s just to say, “Okay, that was one. They’ve got 2 more.” If he hadn’t said anything to begin with, it wouldn’t matter, except that most owners do take questions to some degree. Like it or not, he’s a public figure. The players/manager have to take questions, so why shouldn’t he? It comes with the job, right?
I’m still not convinced of Steinbrenner’s overall health. He’s a very proud man, and having been in the process of dealing with my own aging father, it can be very difficult to admit that you can no longer do things you once could. I understand the reasons for preserving his larger-than-life figurehead, but maybe it would be better for him and everyone involved, if the family would just call it like it is, IF, in fact, things have deteriorated. George has not been shy about talking to the press in the past. We all get older. Nothing we can do to stop it.
Before anyone slams me, I know my opinion doesn’t mean squat. I’m just sayin’….
You guys are too funny!!
The way we argue and fight around the dinner table.
Guys, we gotta save some of that spice for da Turkey-day spat! Member, it’s just ’round da corner!!
Why would George ever sit down in front of a room full of reporters? He doesn’t have to do that anymore.
I may be wrong, but if the Yankees were a laughing stock, I’m pretty sure the different NY and Metro papers would not cover girls HS basketball over them.
I have t osay I agree with Pete. Especially in this day in age shareholders want more accountability from their CEOs and Chairmen. Now before you say “this isn’t a business!!” I say “BULLSHIT!!” It’s nothing but. George is majority owner/Chairman…pure and simple. Just because he may own most of the thing outright, investors..whether it’s his kids, a bank, or we “unimportant” but NUMEROUS owners..the fans who keep this corporation going buying Yankees gear and watching YES and buying warm beer want to get some answers about the future of our investment and OUR company.
And in regards to the questions about WHO said what…if King George really made that comment…then I don’t care if you’re senile or not…you made the comment…stand buy it. That’s what he wants out of Cash, Torre, and the team. If it’s Hal…if you’re “stepping up” then step up and admit YOU gave the ultimatum and not blame it on your Dad.
In general, owners should be seen and not heard. The only thing I expect from any owner is to field a product that has an opportunity to be successful.
It could be that George has his good days and his bad days and that Ian O’Connor just lucked into a good day.
What the ratio of good/bad days are, who knows?
“The people want to hear what you have to say now more than ever.”
It sounds more like the media wants to talk to him more than ever. I’m with the majority here. He can do what he wants. It’s his team and he’s earned the right to. I want to hear from the players and the coaches… not from the owner. What the owner has to say short of declaring a fire sale isn’t going to have any effect on weather or not I buy tickets. What do you think is so different about football? Everyone hates a meddling owner in that sport and doesn’t want/need to hear from him. Why is baseball different? I like that he’s given Ca$hMoney control. Lets leave it at that.
I’m one of the 4.2 million who spent a lot of money on tickets, parking, cold hot dogs, and warm beer. I really don’t care what George Steinbrenner has to say at this point. I just want to see the Yankees win tonight and force a game 5. The only “people” who want to really hear from Mr. Steinbrenner at this point are the folks in the media such as Mr. Abraham. You want Mr. Steinbrenner to give you a collateral story that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual game being played. Stop using the fans as an excuse as to why Mr. Steinbrenner should answer your questions. It’s cheap and your much better than that.
Pete..you reporters are all cut from the same mold. The BOSS doesn’t have to talk to you EVER ! He is a free man in a free country and he will talk to or not talk to anyone he wants. Owner of the Yankees or NOT, you have NO RIGHT to demand that he talks to the press, and I, as a Yankees fan, say that YOU do NOT represent ME in your demands.
“He’s not as lucid and in control as he says he is; that’s obvious, and I’m fine with him pretending otherwise. The harm is in making a mockery of an old, proud man who is in the twilight of his years.
Your job is to obtain information that readers desire. I don’t desire Steinbrenner to be pestered for a cheap headline, and I don’t think I’m in the minority.”
VERY well said.
“Don’t be an apologist for a billionaire. You should want accountability.”
we’re not being apologists. We’re standing up for someone who is clearly on the decline. If anyone truely believes that he’s as good as he claims then they’re being foolish. If they desire, Seniors deserve to be left in peace. Imagine if people were hounding your grandfather when he was in severe decline. We do want accountability but not from him. He signs the checks and gives this team pretty much everything they need to win. He’s not putting out a team with a $30million payroll and it’s not like he can go coach or pitch 7+ innings
Pete…you should really be ashamed of yourself for your comments here. If you don’t believe that Steinbrenner has some very serious problems with either Alzheimers or senility then your either very naive or just not that smart. It’s painfully obvious to anyone who follows this team that he’s not well and has been getting progressively worse. And if you’ve ever had a relative have similar problems you’d know that you can get occasional days/moments of clarity.
For Christ’s sake everyone in the media needs to stop ambushing this guy and leave him alone so he can save a little bit of his dignity. You should all really be ashamed of youreslves.
“Pete..you reporters are all cut from the same mold. The BOSS doesn’t have to talk to you EVER ! He is a free man in a free country and he will talk to or not talk to anyone he wants. Owner of the Yankees or NOT, you have NO RIGHT to demand that he talks to the press, and I, as a Yankees fan, say that YOU do NOT represent ME in your demands.”
Show me, please, where he demanded that the Boss must talk. This comments section is quickly becoming full of people who if in San Francisco are blindly supportive of Barry Bonds.
And if he is not well, and if he is senile, he is doing a disservice to the team he and we love by being in control and making decisions.
If he is that bad, it would be best for the club and for himself to turn the organization completely over to Hal and the not so with it Tampa office. George can still criticize and critique, he’s earned that, but I fear his ability to make any decisions for now and the future if he is as bad as some of you say.
Deryck…did you read Pete’ Post ? “then he should park himself in the interview room and take questions.
*Stop and talk, George.* The people want to hear what you have to say now more than ever. ”
The Boss has done more for this team than anyone appreciates…and it is not BLIND SUPPORT….I am making an informed decision that I think Pete and the rest of the NY Media thinks The Boss OWES THEM AN INTERVIEW….if you did not pick up in this post that Pete thinks The Boss OWES THEM AN INTERVIEW, than I can’t help you, friend. I, for one, 100% disagree with Pete. I have been around a loved one that was failing in his old age. They do NOT enjoy it, they do NOT want to admit it and it is sad. It is quite possible that The Boss and/or his family have decided not to be 100% truthful about George’s health. Think about it, if it were your father, would YOU want him subject to questions from reporters that felt ENTITLED to be putting YOUR DAD through that, no matter WHO he was in the public eye ?
“If he actually does feel fine, if he actually is in full control of the team, then he should park himself in the interview room and take questions.”
Pete:
Those are big iffs. All reports say he goes in and out. Who are you to tell an old, sickly man to do interviews? Gabriel is right. George doesn’t owe them anything.
I think Pete is jealous Big Stein broke the big story with the Record yesterday.
And I wasn’t suggesting you work for Steinbrenner, I was suggesting that Stein is a HUGE reason if not THE reason the Yanks are currently so successful/popular. If they weren’t so popular, there wouldn’t be 10 beat writers in NY covering them (or 11, or 12, whatever) and you might not have a job.
And we aren’t being “apoligists” The Boss doesn’t owe us anything. We owe him a big thank you for his support of the team and his desire not to use the Yanks as a vehicle for profit, but instead truly caring about their success and doing everything in his power to win the World Series.
Thank you King George.
“Think about it, if it were your father, would YOU want him subject to questions from reporters that felt ENTITLED to be putting YOUR DAD through that, no matter WHO he was in the public eye ?”
No, of course not. But I guess I wasn’t clear in my post. I also wouldn’t want my dad running a multi billion dollar organization if he is not able to do this. If I don’t feel confident in him speaking to the media to defend his thoughts, I wouldn’t feel confident in him speaking to the media at all, including these disparaging comments. I may be very naive, but I can’t help but think that upper management has the ability to control the input/output of Stein’s mouth. If they didn’t want him to say what he did about Torre, it wouldn’t have gotten out.
We all know he helped resurrect this great franchise. There is no debating that. But he is a grown man in the entertainment sector and if he is well enough to cover his tracks, he needs to. If he isn’t and he has the capability to say dangerous things, then shame on his caretakers.
I appreciate the money George has given, and the patience (?) he has put in some of his players and managers. I appreciate what he did and continued to do for guys like Strawberry, it showed a human side. But making an publicly aimed message at the beloved leader of a team is irresponsible and against the “keep it within the team” attitude all of these players he has assembled believe in.
George Steinbrenner is an old dog who will never learn new tricks. Torre said it best in his postgame interview last night. I can’t quote him exactly but he said that the players (albeit VERY WELL PAID) are not machines. Blood still runs in their veins and they are subject to being less than perfect.
Steinbrenner thinks his bluster “motivates” HIS team. It’s the old football mentality. Just remember, Yankee fans, it’s HIS team first. We may pay for overpriced hot dogs, warm beer, and the outrageous other ways the “business” squeezes money out of us but we really have nothing to say when it comes to managing/running it.
My happy ending? The Yanks win the World Series and Joe Torre tells Georgie to find another manager. There will never be the like of Joe Torre again in pinstripes. Let’s see someone else hold the zoo together and get to the playoffs 12 years in a row. Oh yeah, and win 4 WS to boot!
Steinbrenner has done more for the fans of the Yankees then any other owner in MLB. He has spent untold amounts on fielding the best team possible, and is now funding a substantial portion of the costs for a new stadium. As a fan, I don’t feel I can ask anything more from the man. If his health is an issue, then that is simply none of our business. I wish him nothing but the best.
George uses the press sometimes, such as yesterday; and the press uses George. I don’t see George owing a further comment, he made himself clear.
just a dog-and-pony show anyway; George is almost undoubtedly attempting motivation, and/or distracting attention from A-Rod. no followup needed, George has accomplished what he wanted yesterday. not sure that his motivation actually means anything; but he certainly distracted attention from A-Rod for a key day
