Wrapping up Game 3 from the Bronx

Peter Abraham
October

Here’s some Alex Rodriguez audio from tonight:

Meanwhile, Phil Hughes became the youngest Yankee ever to win a playoff game. He is eight months younger than Whitey Ford was when he won a World Series game in 1950.

Paul Byrd is 1-4, 4.44 against the Yankees in his career. They tortured him back in August at Jacobs Field, scoring seven runs in two innings. All seven runs came in the second inning. A-Rod homered off him.

I have no idea what they’re planning. But if the Yankees want to get the crowd going tomorrow, they have to convince somebody to throw out the first pitch.

And that is Bernie Williams.

Byrd’s last start against the Yanks:

Paul Byrd was blasted for seven runs in two-plus innings by the Yankees on Saturday.

That’s about right. Byrd gave up 10 runs in 10 2/3 innings versus the Bombers last season. He’s had a lot of solid outings for the Indians this season, but there’s nothing in his arsenal that he can use to retire quality left-handed hitters, something the Yankees have plenty of.

Great idea. Maybe Ian can call Steibrunner and accomplish something productive this time.

  12. Bob from NJ

I wouldn’t be surprised to see CC Sabathia’s name penciled on the lineup card tomorrow with Byrd’s name scratched out.

  13. the todd

was anyone at the game tonight ? how loud was the crowd compared to other yankee playoff moments ? TBS didn’t have much for crowd noise

  14. Max

Taiwan press has confirmed Wang will pitch on tomorrow. Hopfully he can win a game for Yankees!

  15. Lori

Bernie would be incredible. Peter – are you just teasing us or is that really happening?

I missed the beginning of the game today – who threw out the first pitch?

  16. Erik

Tino Martinez threw out the first pitch. My dad thought it would’ve been Bernie today, actually, which would’ve been REALLY cool.

I got home from the game about an hour ago and I’m surprised to read questions about the crowd noise. The crowd tonight was much louder and more into the game than any playoff game I’ve been to in the past couple of years. Not since they were pounding on the Red Sox early in the 2004 ALCS has it been this loud and maybe not since beating the Sox the year before. Even when they were down 3-0 the crowd was rocking. I don’t know how long that would have lasted had the Yanks not turned things around, but happily we didn’t have to find out.

  19. Khoa

Gosh Doc. Those look like prom photos with how young they all look!

  20. emobacca

I like where Ian is pointing

  21. CaptainsCorner

I have a feeling that the 1st pitch will either be Paul Oneil or Yogi. Atleast that is what they did last year.

  22. mel

    Dr. Acula,

Thanks for all the multimedia. Check out the body language of the Mrs. as Ian checks his messages. Looks like Debbie Clemens has already given her a primer.

  23. KurticusMaximus

I can’t even imagine how loud that place would be if Bernie walks out tomorrow to throw the first pitch. I think the Bronx would explode.

Hopefully it’ll be either Bernie or Paulie. Either one, and the Stadium go nuts. If tonight was any indication, tomorrow should be pretty crazy anyway, but the old-timers always get a special reaction. And it would just be so perfect to see Bernie back out there.

    C’mon NY, bring back Bernie!

  24. Summer

So I’m confused — is Bernie really throwing out the first pitch ,or was that just an idea you had?

  25. Dr. Acula

    Mel,

    I dig Debbie, she’s a total ham!

  26. jennifer 27 in 07

Pete is such a tease!! I can’t figure it out myself either!@!

  27. Mike S.

I mentioned it to friends last week. The place would Rock.

No, I don’t have inside information and have no clue if the Yanks would do it, but just from a PR standpoint and it being the right and cool thing to do. Bernie for 1st pitch!

  28. pat

Thanks for the audio. Sounds like A-Rod has learned alot about dealing with the media in the past year.

  29. JessieDog

I was at the game last nigh and was thinking about Bernie throwing out the ball. Seems like he is “around” again and was hoping this would be the right stage for a return. I hope those who are going tonight get to enjoy.

  30. another bernie fan

anybody know if bernie has a website? we should start a draft movement.

  31. Ant928
