i thought villone would get the nod .

  2. Josh

I would have liked to see Ian Kennedy but I can see the reasoning to activating Villone.

  3. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

I agree with activating Villone…as long as he doesn’t get to pitch.

  4. Tommy

It is the correct move. We need a pure relieverat this moment. If we get to the ALCS, we can talk about Kennedy. Against Boston, Torre would have to start with either Hughes or Moose, thus making IPK more attractive as backup.

  5. Drew

Too bad Jimmy Key wasn’t available.

  6. mark

i too thought we would see Ian Kennedy – i guess the powers that be felt Villone (lefty) would be a good choice. this means clemens cannot be on the ALCs roster?? (i think)

unless the yanks go to the WS – Clemens tenure as a Yankee is history – disappointing one at that.

i think it was michael kay on his radio show who predicted Clemens would win between 10-12 games. so much for that prediciton

TODAY’S YANKEES LINEUP (per Yes Network)

    DAMON LF
    JETER SS
    ABREU RF
    AROD 3B
    POSADA C
    MATSUI DH
    CANO 2B
    CABRERRA CF
    MINKY 1B

  8. Yanks fan in Austin

Why not just activate the ball boy? He’d be as good as Villone. Another washed up pitcher. At least Kennedy is young and would give the Yanks a chance at some outs. Villone’s good for…Well, nothing.

  9. Gabriel

that lineup will PUNISH Byrd….Hopefully IPK is activated for the ALCS ? if that is possible ? Pete ????

  10. Phil Hughes Fan

Phil Franchise is on with Fatso and fruitloops

  11. Matt Schweber

Hey, Phil, is that a confirmed lineup?

  12. jennifer 27 in 07

    p-huge on wfan.

  13. PB in DC

Roger had a great career. (Says Captain Obvious)

That doesn’t change the fact that the Yankees are probably better off without him in the ALCS, should they make it there.

I say: Sorry Rocket, but, good riddance. It’s over.

  14. Rebecca--27 in 07! Nothing beats Optimism!

That’s the line up we need tonight.

  15. Jones

Sweet. If the Yankees go up or down by at least 8 runs Villone might see action. Other than that, the move means nothing.

  16. Brandon

Philip Hughes is on WFAN right now w/ Mike and the Mad Dog, IMO he should punch Chris Russo in the face for all season saying he’s not a patch on the fanny of Tim Lincecum but that’s just my opinion :D

  17. Phil Hughes Fan

    Matt-

That was the lineup they posted on the Yes Network with Mike and the mad dog aka Fatso and fruitloops.

  18. Mazun

Why not put Giambi in the lineup?

  19. FlyerHoops

Ugh, is Giambi in Torre’s doghouse or what?

  20. Phil Hughes Fan

If anyone knows anything about body language, PHil Hughes can’t get far enough away of Russo and his hands and arms in Phils face.

  21. GOOM

i liked ipk, then edwar over vilone but torre knows best…lol

  22. Miller

terrible move. hope it doesnt come back to bite us in the arsewhole

  23. Andrew

    Mientkiewicz has a career line of .316 .381 .579 .960, in 21 PA, against Paul Byrd. Giambi’s line, in 18 PA, is .250 .333 .438 .771.

Also, with Wang on the mound, and likely getting a lot of groundballs, you want defense at first. Doug is a legitimate glove at first base, no question he is better than Giambi.

  24. gayle

It is the right move to bring a reliver IPK has never come in as relief and we can add IPK tot he next round if we are lucky enough to make it that far. They can change the rosters for each series.

  25. Phil Hughes Fan

The day Giambi starts to hit the ball the other way and take advantage of the third baseman playing near second base is when Torre might use him again. Giambi is going to be a $20 million PH next year.

  26. Brandon

Andrew put it as best as I could, Minky is needed tonight w/ a groundball pitcher.

*but we can’t use Rocket in the ALCS, just for the WS after we beat the BoChumps arses, so all is well*

  28. Mike R.

I was hoping they would activate me. I have as good a shot at getting an out as Vilone does.

  29. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '07

There’s definitely no complaint from me about having Mientkiewicz out there. He scoops up everything at first base, he’s a versatile hitter, and he knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the playoffs. He’s a crafty veteran and this is definitely not new territory for him. What I mean by a versatile hitter is that Torre can use him to bunt and they could also do a hit and run with Minky. His average isn’t great, but he doesn’t strike out too often.

  30. Doug S

Are you sure Roger could pitch in the WS ? I thought once he was replaced,he was ineligible for the rest of the postseason?

  31. Ted F.

What’s the over/under on strikeouts from the starting pitchers tonight? Wang isn’t likely to be at his best on short rest, but against Byrd I doubt it matters. Wang could be pitching on jet lag with a hangover and he would still win this matchup.

  32. Lil' Jimmy Norden

would have preferred IPK…but villone is a better choice than britton or ramirez.

is clemens in really bad shape?

  33. Pepper Brooks

Giambi and his $20 mill are only 4-16 against Byrd…Yikes.

  34. Willie Mays Hayes

Does everyone realize just how close we were to being up 2-1? 1 out in the 8th, a shot to Minky by Pronk and we have 2 outs – then the bug swarm.

I feel it this year, boys and girls – I do. This ALDS will be the entire season in a small sample size – perfect for the toiletry kit. We came back all year, and now I believe we will do the same in a best of 5.

It all starts tonight – Wang needs to be good, the offense needs to be good, and that should be good enough.

  35. Jeremy

Britton might need some of ARod’s self-help books.

  36. Thurman

I feel a win tonight and it goes back to Cleveland for a 50-50 Game 5. Good series.

Roger came in and changed the mood of the Yankee clubhouse. Maybe it was too expensive of a signing, but he brought the warrior professionalism they needed to recover from 21-29. The youth movement also helped. The lefties starting to hit also helped.

  37. Matt Schweber

Thanks, P-Hughes, I’m off. (Writer bumps fists with everyone in the chatroom.)

  38. jon

Fine with Mientkiewicz at 1B with Wang pitching.

Disagree with Villone over Kennedy. Maybe Kennedy doesn’t feel great. I don’t care that he hasn’t relieved, I take him over Villone in a heartbeat. Plus if the game goes into extras he can pitch until it’s over.

  39. myrtlebeachfan

Hes a better option than Veras or Farns and probably OOhlendorf, because hes a rookie

  40. Matthew Reed

I just got in so Bloe went with Villone over IPK, typical. Well he’ll be gone soon enough!

  41. Matthew Reed

Here we go, now we need a blast!!

  42. Matthew Reed

    Come on!
