Got the press release:

Statement from Howard J. Rubenstein, Spokesman for George M. Steinbrenner:

“George Steinbrenner is traveling back to his home in Tampa and will have no statement at this time.

So the statement is that there is no statement.

Pete, Any chance Joe remains ?

  2. Rebecca--Nothing beats Optimism! October 9th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

    I hate statements like that.

  3. TK_NYY October 9th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

That sounds like someone is, at least, telling him to sleep on it.

  4. Andrea October 9th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

me to, Rebecca, but at the same time, it’s better than saying nothing. He’s not ready to make a real statement, but he’s knows people want to hear something.

  5. Kubah October 9th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

Cashman gave him some warm milk.

I love the Boss, but Torre > Steinbrenner

  6. Doug Mataconis October 9th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

I wonder if they’ll fly the flag when King George returns to Buckingham Place, I mean Tampa.

Face it folks, Joe’s toast. He’s been toast since October 2006 and the only thing that would’ve saved him is another World Series victory.

He doesn’t deserve it, but then again George has a habit of treating managers a lot worse than they deserve

  7. Pauly One October 9th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

Any chance of keeping Torre on as a special advisor for the Yankees? You can never have enough of those?

  8. J-Dawg October 9th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

That statement was a nice way of saying “NO COMMENT.”

  9. #9 October 9th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

    Great going, George.

First you say you will fire him if he doesn’t win.

Then when it comes time to actually act on your promise you run away.

    What a mess.

  10. nate c. October 9th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

i know joe is toast. but, if somehow george kept him around, it would be the first big victory of the offseason.

that’s just my personal opinion, not sure if anyone agrees.

  11. grafxkid October 9th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

I think if Joe stayed, everything else would fall happily into place. The stars would align and keep this great ballclub together. minus the few bumps and bruises that need to be handled of course. I know…wishful thinking!!

  12. Rich Myers October 9th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Pete – based on your relationship with Wang and the fact that he was at the Stadium today, I would expect a no holds bared disection of how the Yankee Ace on October 1st played such a critical role in the demise of this team by the second inning of game 4 on October 8th and what he makes of it all.

What have you got for us?

  13. whozat October 9th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

“First you say you will fire him if he doesn’t win.”

So, I take it you blame Joe for Wang being terrible, the unassailably clutch tandem of Jeter and Posada (and Matsui and ARod, yes) going completely cold at the plate?

I guess you want to give Posada, Mo and Andy reasons not to come back to the Yanks, hm?

Personally, I think that Joe isn’t the guy to establish all this new pitching talent in the majors. I think an amicable parting of ways after this season would have been best, but George foolishly torpedoed that possibility.

Keeping all three of those guys and ARod would allow the Yanks to use their pitching depth to make trades that fix the bullpen and get a solid righty 1B. Losing some or all of those guys would put the team in complete disarray, and they don’t have the young talent to replace them or make trades to replace them. And going the free agent route, especially in such a poor year at 3B, catcher and closer would just be a horrible idea.

Rational people realize this. George right now, and many fans, don’t. It’s sad, really.

  14. Bob October 9th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

I’m so sick of this annual, days after the season, dramafest.

Feels like we just went thru this same crap last year.

  15. CPJerk October 9th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

It appears that I’m one of the few that thinks it’s time for a change in direction at manager. The fact that the Yankees are 4-14 (I believe that’s the number) in their last 18 postseason games under Joe speaks volumes. That’s just unacceptable when you’re manager of the Yankees. I don’t know who would do a better job, but I find it hard to believe Joe is the only person capable of leading this team to a world series.

  16. migames October 9th, 2007 at 5:12 pm

all this talk about doing it with respect and with class went out the window when stienbrenner opened his mouth on sunday, why cant he be like fidel castro and just wear a cute jumpsuits and shut the hell up.

  18. migames October 9th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

two things jump out from feinstein’s comments:
Of course if Steinbrenner was still running the team on a daily basis, three of the players who keyed the victory: Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Robinson Cano, probably would have been traded already for three descendants of Ken Phelps.

    and

The wins and the championships are remarkable; doing it while working for THIS owner is extraordinary.

  19. Bob Cypher October 9th, 2007 at 5:23 pm

If Joe Torre is fired, then maybe we can have a tickertape parade for him downtown (If they had one for Perre Laval and Ayub Kahn, they can certainly have one for Joe) It woulfd be a great way t send off the bst manager since Casey Stengel, and would be great way for NY to say **** to Steinbrenner.

  20. Deryck October 9th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

I’m really trying to decide if it would be easier to be a Nationals or Royals fan at this point. You sure as heck don’t have to put up with the post season meltdown that only the Yankees front office can bring. And hell, liking those teams allows for much more golf in October

  21. Drew October 9th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

I would love to see Howard Rubenstein get axed, and have to announce it himself.

  22. stuart October 9th, 2007 at 5:30 pm

The Yankees fired Casey Stengal.. all managers get fired or do not have there contracts renewed. again torre is class but many people love him becuase the way he communicates thru the media and his CLASS… But the Yanks have other options.. mattingly or Girardi would be great options.. Mattingly the most popular player in the last 25 yrs. as the manager of the only team he ever played for!!!

    not bad…

  23. Rebecca--Nothing beats Optimism! October 9th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

    That is a great article

  24. kasey October 9th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

wait a minute. you’re telling me the yankees failed to win the world series and, as a result, joe torre’s job security is in question/jeopardy?! my god, we’d better all panic, overreact and bicker! next you’ll tell me manny ramirez may not want to play in boston next year!

what a groundbreaking story and debate!

wake me when it’s over. either joe’s back or he’s not. either way, this team isn’t winning jack until they get younger and faster, pitch better, solidify the bullpen, bring back the fundamentals, and abandon the all-star at every position approach. whether torre’s around when that happens is immaterial at this point.

  25. Jimmy October 9th, 2007 at 5:41 pm

    How much does Rubenstein make?

  26. dmm October 9th, 2007 at 5:58 pm

Wang owes the fans an explanantion for his consecutive meltdowns…Joe puts his ace on the mound, TWICE(!!!) and he totally implodes each time.

Pete: Can we please get some commentary from Wang before he flies back to Taiwan? He owes us dammit…

  27. .i. October 9th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

maybe mp would rather have some cheapskate owner or james dolan instead of the “feces in a turtleneck”…

  28. Red Sox Nation Member October 9th, 2007 at 6:06 pm

I can’t believe an owner would get rid of a manager as successful as Torre. Maybe he will want to be some sort of special assistant GM for the Sox….We’ll take him!!!

  29. Doreen October 9th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

    Mighty A -

Thanks for the link. Enjoyed the article. Quite a perspective from outside the New York fishbowl.

  30. Andrea October 9th, 2007 at 6:12 pm

Really, no one owes the fans anything. Wang has never called himself an Ace. He’s no Pavano and it’s not like he rakes in his millions and then sits back with his sore elbow and does nothing.

The Indians just figured Wang out. It happens. Just like some of the Red Sox figured Mo out. Varitek isn’t a good hitter, but he always hits Mo. Somtimes it happens.

  31. Ravi October 9th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

    Pete,

Joe is a class act and I hope George realises there is no better manager out there who can come close to what Joe has accomplished. If he is upset let him talk it up with his favorite Yankee Jeter, who was a dismal failure with his bat and glove.

  32. Jim in CT October 9th, 2007 at 6:55 pm

Y’know, Alzheimer’s really is a terrible and devastating disease.

  33. Girardi October 9th, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Can someone tell me why it’s such a bad idea to try out someone else? I lived through the Billy Martin years, so why must Papa Joe be treated like a Teflon Joe? His approach has clearly stopped working. Try something else out. Why not??? If it doesn’t work out you could always see if Joe and his ego are willing to give it another go. If the Yanks keep Torre in some kind of advisory role or up in the YES booth, then all the better (for Torre). I just don’t know why so many NYers are beholden to this guy and think he should live out his remaining years on this planet as manager of our team.

  34. G. Love October 9th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

Torre won’t take an advisory or YES job. He won’t step down. The guy will be asked to manage another team in a heartbeat.

The Dodges, Orioles, Reds, Cardinals, Mariners would all contact him and see if he interested in managing them…and that’s the just the obvious openings.

You think Houston wouldn’t dump Cecil Cooper for Joe Torre who might bring Andry Pettite back with him to Houston?

A lot of teams with current managers will check the pulse on Torre and see if he’s interested. As a PR and organizational move, he’s a good hire as long he doesn’t demand more than 2-3 million from a potential employer.

The other thing I can see happening is Joe taking a Mets SNY on air type job and then be managing the Mets by the all star break. I don’t think he’d do it to Willie, but you have to think the Wilpon’s who are the kings of PR moves aren’t sitting there thinking Joe Torre taking them into their new ballpark ain’t such a bad idea. He’s clearly shown he can get talented teams into the post season and win world championships. He’s actually a perfect fit for the Mets.

  35. gayle October 9th, 2007 at 8:11 pm

Nice article by a repsected writer but for the Love of God can the press at least some of them get ir right he is or will not be FIRED. Using that langusge is not only misleading but flat out incorrect. His contract is over as of yesterday. It is not a matter of being fired but a matte rof res-signing him just like it is a matter of resigning the players when they become free agents.

Also for the person that asked according to Cost’s he has a 6 year consulting agreement with the Yankees thaT was negotiated with his last contract.

Finally my other question is how exactly do some people want him to go out? Let’s say the team beings him back for 2 years and in those the years the team does not get to the playoffs or has the same fate. those two years he says he still wants to manage do you bring him back again. At some point this does not end good no matter when.

  36. pecosmedic October 9th, 2007 at 11:20 pm

In my opinion, Torre needs to come back. He’s the only one who really know this group of players. Steinbrenner doesn’t know what he has until it’s gone. I’m sure there are other great managers for this club. I just don’t think they’ll come close to what Torre did for the Yankees. I still don’t understand why Torre is getting all the heat for the Yankees elimination this year. Was he supposed to grab Jeter by the hand and tell him, “this is how you hit?” He puts the players out there to do their job. Whether they do their job or not is up to the players. Don’t you agree? He did the best he could with what he had and what Cashman gave him. I really, in my heart, think he did a wonderful job this year and should continue to manage the Yankees. Sorry guys if I piss some of you off. It’s just the way I feel. Have a good night and let’s look forward to next year. We saw a great preview of what’s in store for us with Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy. Now just add Wang into the rotation and we have a “lights out” rotation.
