End of the day at Yankee Stadium

Peter Abraham
October
10

Slow day of newsgathering here at the Stadium. Ron Villone, Mariano Rivera, Alberto Gonzalez and Joba Chamberlain were here over the course of the five hours were were allowed in the clubhouse.

Joba just spoke to us. He said he has no real preference to start or relieve next season. Unlike the rest of his teammates, he had no words of support for Joe Torre.

“It’s part of the game,” he said. “It’s not my decision to make.”

So that is that. Back with more later if anything changes. But it doesn’t seem that any news on Torre’s status will be coming down today.

It would be callous if the Yankees let this drag on more than another day or two.

Can’t believe I’m hearing that from Joba. He earned Joe’s trust, and this is how he repays him.

Stienbrenner is actually losing his mind….Great, this guy is at the wheel?

  3. jennifer

Oh come on he’s a kid, he doesn’t know what to say. Give him a break.

  4. Jaewon

Nothing wrong with what Joba said, he’s been on the team for 2 months it’s not his place to be commenting on the manager

  5. CW

Joba is not yet as media-savvy as some of his teammates, so let’s be fair.

  6. Chien Ming Suck

yankees need a new leader for the foundation of hughes, chamberlain, kennedy, horne, melky, cano!! torre represents the past! its time to let go and begin a new age of winning!

LET GO OF TORRE YOU LOSERS! YOU THINK BRINGING HIM BACK WILL BRING BACK THE DYNASTY! HAHAHA WHY DONT YOU BRING BACK BROSIUS, TINO, ONEILL, AND JUSTICE! AHHAHAHA

bye losers- jeter, posada, matsui! BYE!!!

  7. Joba's OFF can

    Good job Joba!

You are the MAIN REASON the Yanks still aren’t in the post season… so.. I guess it WAS your decision.

  8. Ellen

What a ridiculous comment. The Yankees falling out of the ALDS is Joba’s fault? Dumbest thing I’ve read today, and it’s been a loooooong day.

  9. JeffG

Some folks on here are pretty unhinged.

  10. ItalianGreco

Give the kid a break. He still has a rookie mentality. Now if Jeter said something like that then there would be cause for concern. And Joba is not the reason the Yanks lost the series. Not hitting lost the series.

  11. jennifer

Joba is one of the main reasons we were in the playoffs. All those scoreless innings he pitched, what do you think would have happened if Viz or Farnsworthless was in the game.

  12. TimH

Joba has no loyalties to Joe, and I’m sure during the course of his young career has other coaches at this point he is much closer to.

  13. We Miss Paulie

I like what he said, or not said. He’s staying out of it, which, as a rookie, he should.

  14. Chien Ming Suck

cano is ready to bat #3 or #5! he shouldnt rot in the back end of the lineup in favor of losers like giambi, posada, matsui and jeter!

leave the team you old losers! go with torre!

  15. Sara

I can’t believe the Yankees losing the AlDS is being blamed on Joba by some. What the hell??? How about Jeter who grounded into 3 crucial double plays?????????? How bout A-Rod who, in the clean up spot, had one RBI which came on a solo home run. How many rbi’s did Boston’s clean up have?? We aren’t in the Post Season any more because Yankee offense was DEAD as they have been the past 3 post seasons!!! DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and for all those who want torre gone, what did he do? Blame big George who wants to go out and get a bunch of ever paid, old age players to get stupid fans like us to pay a lot of money to watch them play in the regular season. He doesn’t care about the gel or chemistry of the team. An Alstar team does not equal a world series championship!!!

  16. SJ44

He’s a rookie. He doesn’t have to right to say anything.

Come on, lighten up. Joba Chamberlain has NO say into the future of Joe Torre.

He did the only smart thing he could do in that situation….say nothing.

  17. Chien Ming Suck

the old washed up players like jeter, posada, giambi like torre around cause he makes the feel special! torre obviously favors the oldies over young players!

torre needs to go! these washed up old players feel too secure! bring in girardi who wont be scared to bench someone when he is sucking.

oh ya jeter has deteriorated into a crappy singles hitter. its either single or DP when he comes up. i mean when he was younger he would hit doubles to the gap, now nope, just patented fly ball to right fielder. from “captain clutch” to “derek choker”

  18. J. V. - Yonkers

Joe Torre would have been content with Farnsworth and Bruney until Cashman told (not asked) him that Joba and Kennedy were being called up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
If Torre is retained, it’s likely with a stipulation that his managerial style will need to change especially with his use of the bullpen. He’ll have to understand that the new wave of young Yankees are here with more to come.

  19. Art

Don’t forget the Umpires are to blame for not delaying the BUG game. Torre shares some blame here as well for not even complaining

  20. TimH

Two players I definitely think have lost their luster are Matsui and Giambi, both are one dimensional offensive dinosaurs who clog up the line-up and leave the team little flexibility for the DH postion. Both need to be moved. The thought of Matsui in the outfield in 2008 turns my stomach. Any FA player that the Yankees do sign should bring more to the table than just a bat. Matsui has been nowwere to be found in the past 4 post-seasons.If you look at Hideki Matsui’s post-season batting stats, from Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS through Game 4 of the 2007 ALDS, this is what his totals are:

    16 Games
    69 Plate Appearances
    .213 Batting Average
    .311 Slugging Percentage
    2 RBI

Yes, this covers Games 5-7 of the 2004 ALCS, Games 1-5 of the 2005 ALDS, and Games 1-4 of both the 2006 and 2007 ALDS. A total of two RBI in 16 games.

  21. migames

Does steinbrenner have alzheimer’s? If so, anyone know what the power struggle would be to take him out of the equation would be like?

Im not saying he does have alzheimer, but if he does, what happens?

  22. yo

    haha ya

  23. Pete Abes

    :::BREAKING NEWS:::

Brian Cashman Has just anounced that Joe Torre will NOT be the yankees manager next season, his successor will be Larry Bowa. More on this in a little bit.

  24. jk

Can’t blame Joba, he is sick of having to pick up Torre’s dry cleaning.

  25. jk

Nice try on the Bowa “story”. Better luck next time.

  26. TimH

    BREAKING NEWS-

  27. unmoronic

joba better be a starter next year……..

  28. TimH

BREAKING NEWS-Why would Pete just post a story like that down here? Nice try.

  29. saucy

wow, i should have just stayed in that other thread… :?

  30. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

i wish thats true. larry bowa is the best! hes not g@y style managing like torre (squeezing players cheeks, etc.) i hope he punches jeter everytime he grounds into a DP

  31. Jim PA

I’m not sure myself if replacing Torre is the right way to go, but if so, I hope it’s Girardi and not Larussa at the helm next year. Look what he did in Florida last year with those kids. Amazin’

  32. jennifer

and why would he write Peter Abes and not his full name.

  33. Mike S.

Wrong, Eugene. Joba understands that as a rookie with 24 innings under his belt, he really has no say in the proceedings. He understands that the last thing he should be at this time is a clubhouse lawyer. God knows there are enough of them. Look at the clubhouse lawyers elsewhere (Tiki/Coughlin last year for one).

He is still trying to establish himself as a player. At least he realizes that his job is between the lines and not telling the front office what to do. Someone like a Mo or Posada or Jeter has put in enough time to have some kind of input. Joba hasn’t.

  34. TimH

    because he’s a dope.

  35. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

jeter needs to have his captain tag taken away. how many championships since he was named captain? HAHAHA! jeter is a singles hitter and he cant field, yet hes so full of himself. arod is 50000 billion x better but hes booed everytime he makes an out.

arod should be shortstop AND captain! jeter should just leave baseball because hes a disgrace.

  36. Tom Verducci

“Here’s all you need to know about why the Yankees are 4-13 in their past 17 postseason games: In that stretch their starting pitchers are 2-8 with a 6.36 ERA while averaging 4 2/3 innings per start. Two wins from starting pitchers in 17 games, none in which they completed seven innings. The lack of pitchers who can give them length or the ability to strike out batters — they averaged 5.9 strikeouts per nine innings — has killed New York more than anything else.”

  37. Mike S.

ummm, I think after that post most would say YOU are a disgrace.

  38. catya

I be his dad said keep out of it,you don’t have clout yet.

  39. MRT Bago

Re Joba’s comment, this is the same 22 year old who would have been happy ending the year in AA! He also felt he let down ‘his guys’ in the Midge disaster, so a twinge of guilt about the outcome of the series is still certainly on his mind. He needs to be cut any and all slack about any comments made in the aftermath of the come down of his two month high! The fact that he’s my second cousin has me a bit protective of his psyche right now! If anyone deserves any enmity right now it’s The Captain…

  40. JeffG

Hey Peter, I think it’s time to declare an adult swim here and throw some of these kiddies out of the pool.

  41. TimH

Thoughts from Jimmy Hoffa can’t be too far off.

  42. li

    Joba is correct.

  43. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

are you saying jeter is better than arod, mike S.??? HAHAHA! arod is the better fielder, better hitter and his postseason stats this year are better than jeter’s! he also carried the team all season long to get to the play offs. i dont remember jeter doing that!

now arod should be the SS and captain! but where do you move jeter? he has no range, he cant throw (game 3) and he has no power. the logical choice is to exile jeter from baseball. hes better off making cologne commercials and hosting late night parties.

  44. Tommy

Wow! It took a 22 year old rookie to offer the press a real world answer. The kid is mature beyond his years.

Mo is just pissed off and frankly, probably a bit nervous. Aside from a short stint with Buck, Joe is all he knows. Mo will calm down, and most likely accept a very generous offer from the Yanks.

  45. Tony

what exactly did Joba say that was wrong?

  46. catya

Italian Greco, good pitching stop good hitting.Baseball says a pitchers is fielded by 8 players, ours didn’t HIT!!!

  47. asburyboss

    Pete…how safe is Cashman?

any chance Cashman goes and Torre stays? Not sure how I feel about that.

  48. JDnotDrew

Joba might and I know it’s a small might , be pitching in releif next year . So.. that might have been his arm talking. You never know.
I still want Torre back or maybe Girardi. Is Jim Leyland available?

  49. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

agree mariano is nervous. hes becoming more washed up every year. sooner than later he will become a loser like hoffman. offer him a reasonable contact if he wants to leave, let him! hes not 99 rivera anymore!

  50. Global Warming

    Go Mo!

    Speak out your mind!

As for Joba, maybe there was some bugs in that room so he fumbled the question? Zing!… sorry.

  51. Wolf In Pinstripes

Pete Abe doing a mailbag with Joba: “Joba, one of our readers wanted me to ask you what your favorite pizza from Domino’s is.”

    Joba: Ugh. I can’t eat that #@$&. I’m a Papa John’s guy.

Knee-jerk reaction fan on Lohud Blog upon reading answer: Joba sucks! When he gets 4 world series rings he can tell people what’s good and what isn’t!! $#@& him!!!

  52. migames

i will be heartbroken when torre is let go. I will be stunned if cashman is fired.

  53. Global Warming

By the way, chances that Posada, Mo leave because of Torre is there. It might not be a big chance but money doesn’t buy everything. Singing about it being a business all you want but it’s happened before.

Pettitte was disrespected, he left FOR LESS MONEY to Houston.

The more this organization keeps waiting around and leaving Joe hanging, the more and more the chances increase that Joe comes back.

This Yankee Brass deserves no defense!

  54. Drive 4-5

    Callous = G Steinbrenner.

Good for Joe for pointing out that George was “nuts” to put any extra pressure on his team.

The last thing I want to be is “callous”, but how far should the Yankees go in signing Mo? Do you give him a 3 year deal in the $32 – $35mil range at age 37? He made $10.5 mil this year. I doubt if he’ll sign for less.

  55. Drew

It’s silly to make anything of Joba’s words.

  56. Pat

Joba said what the other players should be saying. Players should not be able to dictate who the manager is like Mo is trying to do. It turns out bad in the end. Want an example? Look at the NBA… Kobe anyone? When players do that it messes up everything.

  57. Tseng

I think it’s kinda hard to stick up for someone when you’ve only been there for a few months. Think about it people, if you just got hired at a company and your boss was fired two months later, do you complain? Veteran workers probably have a lot more perspective and knowledge of the situation than you, so you’d be rather prudent to let it all play out.

And to whoever made the ridiculous comment that it was Joba’s fault we’re out of the post season, if you can pitch accurately at 90+ mph in a hostile crowd environment with literally hundreds of bugs flying around you, crawling on you, crawling/flying INTO you…. maybe you should try out for the Yankees? I’m pretty sure that would mess up my mechanics just a tad.

  58. KurticusMaximus

Seriously, it’s been less than 48 hours since the Yankees lost their game.

I don’t understand all the anger at them taking some time to think about it. For one thing, I can’t imagine they’ll announce Torre’s done until they have someone to replace him.

But seriously, this isn’t a small decision. Of all the choices Steinbrenner and company need to make regarding where his money goes in this team, there aren’t many more important than manager.

Even if the decision has already largely been made, give the guy time to get to Florida and meet with all the other guys down there. Taking a couple days isn’t unreasonable.

  59. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

cashman needs to think long and hard about resigning mo and posada. no more matsui and mussinas please. if theyre old and washed up, let them go. jeter is old and washed up, let him go.

  60. saucy

agreed kurticus. i don’t think they need to rush into any decisions. spring (unfortunately) is quite a few months away.

  61. Global Warming

    Mark this down.

If we don’t re-sign Mo Rivera, we will have a *bottom 5 bullpen next year, right next to the D-Rays*.

  62. Tseng

Jeter, admittedly, is not a good defensive player anymore. Still, who’s better out there(and availible)? His offensive numbers have been fairly solid, too.

  63. GOOM

    get alife chocker….u r a real loooser

  64. Joe M

Once again I think Mo is 38 an I wouldn’t give him a 3 year deal. One year with an option and if he doesn’t like it let him go pitch for Tampa We have too much dead wood on this team now (Giambia) don’t need more

  65. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

AROD SHOULD BE RESIGNED EVEN IF HE OPTS OUT. he should be the SS and captain of the yankees. melky and cano has more respect for him. they dont respect jeter as much. I think it has something to do with arod’s work ethic. while jeter is sleeping in after a night of non stop partying, arod is in the batting cage practicing his craft. melky and cano sees this and they are attracted to his leadership qualities.

does anyone remember the last time jeter hit a double? i cant and thats sad. his usuall game is 1-5 with a single and 3 DPs.

  66. GOOM

Din’t Cashman renew his contract with the agreement he had full control of this team and it’s player/coaches make-up(at least players? Torre may be sent on his way but Cashman seems to have lost some clout and control, ie. the recent comments. I know he gets imput with “discussions” and all but now he’s only “suggesting” things. Where’s the final word there?

  68. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

why did you even list gomes? hes a loser, like you are.

  69. .i.

you haters need to lay off joba chamberlain. i prefer that kimi raikkonen style over all these other “men” making torre bigger than the entire franchise.

  70. Carson

Man, this “captain clutch to derek choker” character is a real tool.

He is such a moron, I’m starting to wonder if he is high, drunk, or a breezy combination of both.

  71. Tseng

Ok choker, it’s quite clear you don’t like Jeter and prefer A-rod. If he opts out though, it means he’ll have turned down a likely 32ish million dollar offer from the Yankees. If he thinks he can get better in the FA market and somehow does, more power to him. I shudder at the thought of signing anyone to more than a 4 or 5 year contract unless there are club options tacked on at the end. Oh yes, I realize a-rod is going to hit a bajillion home runs and make a bazillion dollars for the YES network… but if he starts to break down after he’s 36, that’s more than three pavano’s weighting down the budget.

And if not Jeter, who? Who’s out there?

  72. Yankees Chick

i definitely wouldn’t hold it against joba for not saying anything about torre. the kid is 22 yrs old and has no idea WHAT he’s supposed to be saying to the media and is probably just taking the “no comment” approach to EVERYTHING – a good move for a kid.

  73. Felipe from Brazil

    hey captain imbecile
have you short memory? Jeter led us to the post season last year… why don’t you just shut the f*** and leave your ignorant bostonian troll

  74. Yankees Chick

and pete: you hit the nail on the head: “It would be callous if the Yankees let this drag on more than another day or two.”

letting torre sit and wait on this is nothing short of utter disrespect.

  75. catya

    Captian clutch-,

when, and IF Arod hits with any regularity(With all his practice0 in postseason,anD helps the yankees win “A” WS,maybe he could walk in Derek’s shoes.
I’ll never PERSONALLY, put an import over farm raised, ever.

  76. stuart

if it takes a week to decide I do not think that is callous. the Yanks are doing nothing wrong here it is the INSANE papers and pundits spreading rumors with no facts.

Torre’s contract is over the Yanks need to consider if they want to bring him back and yes the early exit was unplanned and effects the decision

  77. JDnotDrew

Captain Clueless- You get all that from watching the games or do you just like to write down your dreams? Helps you keep track of them and stuff. Yeah I can see that.

  78. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

whens the last time jeter hit a double? can someone answer without looking it up? HAHAHA! thats right you cant remember! jeter is so overrated but unfortunately hes become the image of the yankees. just like torre, people dont want to give him up.

all i can say is STOP LIVING IN THE PAST! embrace the future that is captain AROD, SS of the NY YANKEES!

  79. RM

“jeter has deteriorated into a crappy singles hitter. its either single or DP when he comes up. i mean when he was younger he would hit doubles to the gap, now nope, just patented fly ball to right fielder. from “captain clutchâ€? to “derek chokerâ€?”

Jeters doubles totals last 12 yrs:
    Next Stats >>

    1996 25
    1997 31
    1998 25
    1999 37
    2000 31
    2001 35
    2002 26
    2003 25
    2004 44
    2005 25
    2006 39
    2007 39

So as you can see choker he has hit more doubles later in his career than early.

  80. Jim from Pittsfield

Callous? C’mon…give me a break. This is the media making a story when there is no story.

George said he won’t be back…he won’t be back.

Two days or two weeks. His contract is up. He will have no problem getting a job if that is what he wants. For cris sake, 12 years…and now no matter what George does it will be dissing JT in the press’s eyes to sell papers.

  83. Tseng

I can’t recall the last time Jeter hit a double, but if you can remember when A-rod last hit a double then I think you care far too much about him to be healthy.

  84. catya

captain’s day to move on will come,he is the face of the yankees now!!

  85. mike

jeter tripled the last game of the season, but id remember when he doubled last

  86. catya

    Tseng ,AMEN

  87. Andrea

mike: that should have been an inside the park home run. He wanted to get Bobby his 100th RBI, so he stopped at 3rd. But I suppose you can call that a triple if you’d like.

  88. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

Jeter deteriorated towards the end of the season! Its a sign of things to come 2008 and beyond.

For Arod, were only seeing the beginning of something great. Greatness that is 1000 homeruns and zillions of RBIs. oh ya and 5 WS rings (This will only happen if jeter is traded away)

Hear me out on this.. jeter is obviously jealous of arod’s accomplishments this year. you can see it in his facial expressions. he really sucked this postseason but i wonder if he tanked on purpose. I dont know, maybe he didnt want arod getting all the credit. maybe he wanted arod to leave. just something to think about…

anyway i think jeter should be shipped. him and arod cant coexist and when theres friction you have to eliminate someone. i think it has to be jeter because he is the inferior player.

  89. Houston Mets Fan

ok…let me say by the name I am a Mets Fan…but I want to see the Mets and Yanks play in the World Series next year (you can guess who I want to win)
Here is my guess on what will happen:
    1. Posada re-signs (no way he leaves…or should leave)
    2. AROD re-signs (he cannot get more money from what I see)
    3. Torre is gone
    4. Girardi is Manager
    5. 1 more year from Pettite
    6. THE biggest issue is RIvera, he is going to get 3/36mil (I am basing this off what Philly gave Tom GOrdon…and they would give this to Rivera I am sure, GOD FORBID)

  90. Joey Bagadonuts

No, what’s callous is tabloid reporters and photogs dogging Torre at his home, after he explictly asked them for privacy and to respect his personal space.

Yes I know you and your paper didn’t go there.

So much of this “twisting in wind” and “respect” stuff is just a media creation though. Just because the media wants it’s answer NOW, the Yankees are supposed to provide it? And if they don’t go by your timetable the story becomes how the Yankees are treating Joe cruelly. Look, I like the guy and totally agree he’s a class act yada yada but I don’t buy it, just as I didn’t buy it when Bernie couldn’t retire gracefully, but got it in his head that the Yankees owed him one of their 25 roster spots

  91. catya

    captain clutch,
derek jeter said before arod came to this team,he (jeter)mailed one of his rings to arod,so he could actually see what one looks like up close. Why do you think arod is here?
arod still needs some yankee jewlery, for this mkt to consider him “GREATNESS” This is the place legends are born,we’re still waiting on his “GREATNESS” to arrive!!!!

    Thank you very much!

  92. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

Jeter mailing Arod one of his rings shows the elitist that he truly is. His ego is that of a mountain.

Arod doesnt need jeter to win a WS he needs wang, chamberlain, hughes, kennedy, cano, melky, etc.

  93. saucy

_6. THE biggest issue is RIvera, he is going to get 3/36mil _

i think your estimate is too low. i was thinking more like 40/3, or maybe more.

    similar contract to jorge.

  94. saucy

_His ego is that of a mountain. _

this probably applies to 99.999% of major leaguers.

  95. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

jeter mailing arod one of his rings is like telling him ‘hey look you can have one of these if you become like me, a crappy singles hitter’ … i think this is why Arod struggled under dire times. It wasn’t until this year that he figured it out but it was too late because jeter was already grounding into DPs.

  96. catya

    captain clutch,
this is when they were close it was a joke between friends.Arod had all those players here this year, that you mentioned,Were’s the Bling Bling,Huh!!!!

Posada and Rivera hit the market right because no other closer or catcher is worth anything (the Mets will have to re-sgn LeDuca because everyone else sucks). Rivera was also lights out in the playoff series…that cant hurt him.

  98. J-Dawg

That’s exactly what Joba needed to say. Just keep it simple, the time will come in the future when he needs to say more, but what he said here was perfect. He’s just a youngster, let him be.

  99. catya

captain clutch, Arod will become the palyer you think,it may not be as a yankee,he’s a mercenary a”Hireling.”

  100. JDnotDrew

Jeter does not need to be jelous of antone and he most likely isn’t. If he is it’s prob of Tom Brady with his super hot girlfriends not A-Rod. Even then doubtful cause his ladies prob are nothing but the best.

  101. Joe M

no more than two years an an option for both

  102. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

    catya,
if jeter leaves and Arod is declared captain, they will have a championship dynasty that will last 10 years. I guarantee it! Unfortunately management see the franchise and derek jeter as inseparable.

  103. Houston Mets Fan

Other teams will offer both 3 years…what other closer or cather is available? This free agent market sucks.

  104. Joe M

I think Jeter has a no trade clause

  105. Joe M

Let them offer three years this is business they can go play for Tampa

  106. catya

    captain clutch,
If arod produces in postseason you will encounter a happy fan base, you see if you talk the talk,YOU must walk the walk,if not it’s just a balk!

  107. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

Does jeter have a no-release clause?

  108. Jonathon

The migames post at the top of this thread with the link to the Sports Illustrated story once again shows why any comments made by Steinbrenner have to be taken with a little bit of skepticism at this point.

The man is obviously not well. Any reporter that quotes him now should to use better judgment when doing so.

Steinbrenner is no longer in charge of the Yankees, he’s not even in charge of his own faculties.

The decision on whether or not to re-sign Torre will be an organizational decision.

Let’s just hope he still has enough supporters, or that the supporters that he does have will be able to convince the others that Torre is still the best man to lead the Yankees.

  109. Thrillington

I think the longer this goes on, the more it indicates they are working out a new deal with Joe Torre, which I think is a good thing. Hank Steinbrenner likes Torre a lot and we know from last year that Cashman is one of Joe’s advocates.

I think everyone in management and ownership can appreciate that anything can happen in a short series. Looking back, now we realize how special and extraordinary those teams from 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 were as they emerged champions through such long stretches. This is actually really hard to accomplish yet we as fans take it for granted.

This team hasn’t had pitching for years. Bats can get shut down in these series very easily. With stronger, more reliable pitching, who knows what could have happened in any of these past years.

The Yankees were the only team from last year’s playoffs that made it in this year. They’ve made it consistently since 1995. I think Joe Torre is a part of the reason why it has been so steady all those years. I don’t know if someone else can get this team as it is over the hump. The risk at the expense of losing Torre in such a decision seems rather counterproductive IMHO.

I agree with what’s been said before: be careful what you wish for.

  110. Houston Mets Fan

Rivera goes to the Phillies, Indians or Tigers if he leaves…and the Yanks have no one to replace him with (Joba is not staying in the Pen) and the catching crop sucks this year…the 2 best available cathers played for the Mets last year and they suck!!!!!

  116. Jonathon

    Thrillington

The reason this is taking so long is because the Yankees have to accomplish two things.

    1) Hammer out a deal with Torre, which you mention in your post.

    2) Figure out a way maintain the perception that Steinbrenner is still firmly in control of the Yankees.

Once Torre returns, there are going to be a lot of questions about Steinbrenner’s health and his role with the team.

The Yankees want to maintain the perception that George is still the Boss of old for as long as they can.

Torre’s return is going to poke holes in the illusion and they have to figure out how to deal with that.

    IMHO

  117. Thrillington

    Hey Jonathon,

I had the same thought, but stopped myself from writing it because it sounded too much like a Cold War Kremlin cover-up story. But not at all out of the realm of possibilities.

I hope Steinbrenner is lucid enough to say what he’s been saying. I hate to see anyone fall ill, so evidence of bluster certainly counters any of the previous reports. But firing Torre would just be a lose-lose situation whether you’re a Torre supporter or not. I personally believe he’s been exemplary. But even if you think it’s time for a change, I don’t know of a better option and I would not wish a transition year like 2008 is going to be on a rookie manager like Mattingly.

Since the advent of the Wild Card in ‘95, no team has repeated as a World Series Champion since the Yankee three-peat of 1998-2000. It goes to show how tough it is to repeat with 3 tiers of playoffs.
Steinbrenner said it himself during the celebration of 2000.

  123. Chris NY

did some idiot just declare the 1 run Joba gave up as being the reason we lost 3 games to a team that out hit, out pitched, and out played us in every way possible?

Yeah I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I think that’s what’s going on.

The Steinbrenner children obviously don’t want their father to look like a fool so they are going to try help him save as much face as possible.

But the fact is Steinbrenner is sick and reporters should know better before they call him up on the phone or ask him questions about the future of the Yankees.

I do think Torre should return. Like you said, 2008 is going to be an important year for this team. Among all the things that the Yankees need for next year, I think stability is the most important. Joe Torre provides that.

  129. mike

  131. Keith

The biggest factor in the decisions of the Yankee brass as they meet in Tampa is who gives the team the best possible chance to win especially in 2008 with the end of the old Stadium and in 2009 with the opening of the new Stadium. This weighs heavy on their minds.

  132. Bob Michaels

This is the funny time of the Year, the countless minions were screaming for Torre`s hairless scap when the Bombers were 8 ganes south of 500. Now that the end is near they want Mr Clueless to stay, JUST ONE MORE YEAR, Hoping that the law of averages goes into effect in a positive way and they manage to squeeze out another championship.
THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, THE YANKEES WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP WITH TORRE AT THE HELM.

Stop responding to that hack. All of his arguments have no basis on actual stats (until A-Rod can hit in the postseason he’ll never win a ring, unlike Jeter who’s name is Mr. Clutch for a reason *COUGH*most postseason hits, singles, at-bats and runs scored*COUGH*) except for the self-proclaimed “expert” he is.

I’m the President of the United States, too.

Seriously, the 12 year-olds that like to pose as Yankee fans just to get a rise out of people gets old fast.

  136. Tommy

    Yankees Chick:

Joba did not say ” no comment”. He said “its part of the game……not my decision.” Closer to reality than anything spoken by any other player.
This is not Hoosiers, where Jimmy comes in and says “coach stays, I play; coach goes, I go.”
This is the Big Time. The players will play for $ and suck it up.

At this point ,who knows. Maybe Joe does come back.
It really does not matter. An organization with this much $ and this much established talent can win with Torre or without him.

A buddy of mine( a Yankee hater and west coast native) used to joke that Jeter was not even the best shortstop on his own team. I explained to him that Derek was revered in NY and AROD had no shot of playing shortstop.
Jeter will have to move to another position eventualy. Very few shortstops play 15 + years at a high level. Robin Yount moved to the outfield and he turned out ok I’d say. The day will come. No need to get on him now.

  137. Jonathon

    Bob

That’s a bold prediction…what makes you say that?

  138. J-Dawg

Jose Molina is a great example of how classy the Yankee clubhouse and organization is. Jose was traded by the Angels of course, then was sent to New York. He seemed like he didn’t want to come at first. Suddenly he gets here and is immediately impressed by how the Yankees treated him. Jose said during interviews that he loves the way he has been received in the clubhouse. Molina is the best backup catcher that the Yankees have had in years. It sounds like he is fully content to stay in New York. I would be happy for him to remain a part of this team.

  139. KurticusMaximus

Guys, please stop responding to “Captain Clutch.”

The guy is just another troll, trying to provoke an argument. Let him spout off, and move on.

  141. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

  145. catya

  146. No Morre Torre

The Yanks should let go of Posada because he’s too old to give the 3 years he wants. Yes, I know, he hit .338 this year, but that was an anomaly. History -more specifically his career .277 BA and only two other times he finished .281 or better (.281 in 2003, .287 in 2000)- shows that. He never finished with a .300 or better BA until this year.

He posted 20 HR and 90 RBI this year, but the Mets’ catching tandem of Paul Loduca and Ramon Castro combined for 20 HR and 85 RBI (9 HR and 54 RBI by Loduca + 11 HR and 31 RBI by his

  147. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

tommy said jeter would eventually play the outfield.

  148. BR

    Did you guys see this:
But the Yankees have a Plan B ready, which might include a full-blown pursuit of Johan Santana — even if it means trading Phil Hughes and Robinson Cano and prospects. But even without such a trade, the Yankees are banking on re-signing Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, both of whom will make the Bombers squirm (and pay) for not negotiating with them in spring training, but ultimately will choose to finish their careers in the Bronx.
    http://www.northjersey.com/pag.....FlZUVFeXk2

I somehow doubt this is true, no way were trading Hughes or Cano. Not to mention the yankees have said Hughes is untouchable.

  149. Jonathon

    Joey…exactly.

Steinbrenner’s comments didn’t make any sense in regards to Froemming since the umpiring crew for a series is the same from start to finish. The Yankees still had, potentially, 3 more games with this umpiring crew.

That’s what I mean about reporters. Isn’t the next logical question to that statement, “Did you get the umpiring crew changed for games 3, 4 and 5?” or how about “Did the league office change the crew for the next few game?”

But those are the types of red flags reporters are ignoring when it comes Steinbrenner. They’re ignoring the obvious.

Bill Madden did the same thing last year. How’d that turn out?

  150. from Captain Clutch to Derek Choker

no way the yankees should trade cano! hes a .300+ hitter 30 hr 100 rbi 2nd baseman. I would rather trade 2 of chamberlain, hughes, wang with horne and melky.

  151. BR

two of Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy or Wang would be too much as it is. Cano and Hughes is too much IMO as well.

  152. Jonathon

    BR it is too much…

as much as I love the idea of Santana in a Yankee uniform, I don’t think trading good, young arms away is the answer.

  153. Tommy

I did not explicitly say Jeter would play the outfield. I used Yount as an example of a shortstop moving to a new position. My bad for not being clear. I have no idea if Jeter can play the outfield well. I just feel surethat he will not spend every game of his career at SS. Even Ripken moved. although if Damon can play left, can’t just about anyone?

Someone earlier stated that RF was the easiest outfield position. I beg to differ. Think of all the monster RFs thru the years. The cannon arms. Paulie would be offended!

  154. NJ

I would have no problem with Joba back in the bullpen next season and eventually becoming the closer. Especially if another minor leaguer like Alan Horne would fill out the rotation.

Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Horne or something like that.

  155. Joe from Long Island

I’ve been reading the posts for the last two days, and, guys, just like the season, you can’t panic.

Joe Torre may be gone. No matter how sentimental we get, the only thing that may save him is a terminal disagreement as to his successor. I think that he’ll get a deal as a special advisor, like Reggie Jackson, and some YES games on the side. This will give the Yankees and Joe a dignified exit, good money for Joe, plus insure that he doesn’t wind up managing someone else (like the Mets if they decide to fire Willie in mid-season) and potentially embarass them.

Don Mattingly is likely first up to be new manager. It seems like the Steinbrenner family likes him, and he has paid his dues. Those who say he doesn’t have enough experience as bench coach omit the years he spent as hitting coach – I don’t think he turned his brain off when other aspects of the game came up. And how much experience did Joe Girardi have when he went to Florida? None. I don’t think that the team would bring Joe back as manager with Donnie as “manager-in-waiting”, because that would be a sword hanging over Joe’s head, and I don’t think either one would be comfortable with that arrangement. Nor do I think that Mattingly or Girardi would care for an arrangement where one of them is manager and the other bench coach. Their pride wouldn’t allow it, and I don’t think that sort of semi-shared responsibility that some are talking about would work.

LaRussa’s candidacy likely exists only in LaRussa’s head. If George didn’t like Joe Torre getting “too much credit” for the Yankeees’ success, he sure won’t go for LaRussa’s diva act – and LaRussa hasn’t even won anything around here yet.

Mariano and Jorge will likely re-sign with the team. The team clearly needs their production (the Tigers’ taking on Pudge Rodriguez for $13 M for less offense than Jorge’s was done because there aren’t any good catchers out there – remember our experiences prior to Molina (who will also likely be brought back)). Abreu will similarly come back, again, because he produces (remember, we don’t make the playoffs in 2006 without the year he had) and there are no cheaper/better alternatives (Torii Hunter, 32 yo with a 4-year contract? Andruw Jones after the year he had, praying he comes back? Aaron Rowand – also multiyear.). Abreu at one more year gives the Yanks a bridge to Tabata/Austin Jackson.

First base logjam is more of a problem – Minky, Giambi, Andy Phillips (remember him?) as is Damon/Matsui. But that is what needs to be discussed between Cash and new manager.

Everything we are reading now is tinged with emotion, and posturing (like in the case of Arod). Take nothing at face value. I agree with Peter, Arod will most likely stay here – after a lot of angst. Where else is he going? Who is going to pony up $300M? Moreno bailed on Soriano at $120 M.

Anyway, my original point is that the sky is not falling. And we shouldn’t fall for trolls, who, unfortunately, still lurk about.

  156. Jensen

    From ESPN.COM :

“A baseball official with knowledge of the team’s intentions said the Yankees plan to make contract offers to Rivera, catcher Jorge Posada and slugger Alex Rodriguez before they are allowed to negotiate with other clubs.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Yankees haven’t commented publicly on their plans.”

All 3 of these offers will be sweet, IMO. I still think, ultimately, all 3 of them come back next year WITH Andy P. as well.

  157. Joe from Long Island

Jensen – That may be so -just because it comes from ESPN doesn’t mean it’s not true – but is not surprising. It’s is what should be expected. They’re not letting these guys just walk away. People shouldn’t panic.

  158. Jim Clark

“It would be callous to let this drag on more than a day or two”. Gee Pete, calm down. Take a valium. Typical New York Sports media “I want it yesterday..WWWAAAHHHH!!!!!” It’s a tough decision with both pros and cons about retaining Torre. Best to wait for the disappointment over getting eliminated to make a rational decision. Torre is going to starve if the Yankees don’t reach a decision by Friday.

  159. Dr. Acula

_It would be callous if the Yankees let this drag on more than another day or two._

    Well, it’s gonna be callous.

Buster Olney says they won’t make a move until Friday, at the earliest, and the move will likely occur at the begining of next week.

  160. Doreen

    Pete,

It’s only callous if no one (Cashman, I guess) has spoken to Joe Torre and let him know it might take a few days. Or at least let him know when the meetings are beginning. If they haven’t done that, then it’s callous. At least if Joe knows the decision is not final for a few days or a week, he can live his life without holding his breath everytime the telephone rings.

  161. pat

A friend told me Bill Madden said the same thing as ESPN on SNY today. He said he could guarantee that the Yanks are making Mariano, Jorge and Alex offers before the free agent period begins. He’s also the one who said it was LaRussa to NY but now seems to have backed off that somewhat. He even said something today like who knows maybe Torre is back again. He’s the same guy who said Steinbrenner told him that Torre was gone last year the morning after the Yanks lost and when he stayed he said Swindal changed George’s mind.

  162. Bob Michaels

Joe Torre will meet with reporters at the stadium on thursday.

  163. migames

what is the hold up. Steinbrenner told the media on sunday if the yankees dont win, torre isnt back. The yankees lost 2 days ago. What is the hold up? Honestly, this is silly. If the boss said something, why isnt he doing it? Thats whats callous

  164. Doreen

But I think Steinbrenner said it was likely that they wouldn’t have Torre back. “Likely” is not “definitely.” There is always a loophole. :)

  165. Dr. Acula

_Slow day of newsgathering here at the Stadium._

    Peter,

You need to go outside the box – Go woodward & bernstein.

Meet Cashman or Big Stein at a parking garage or a strip club, um, um I mean gentleman’s club, at 2 in the morning and get all the inside dope.

  166. David

    TimH October 10th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

    “““““““““““““““““““““““““““““

Hey TimH, why don’t you give credit to Steve Lombardi @ waswatching.com, you know, the website you ripped all that off of.

  167. SJ44

Why can’t some of you understand that NO DECISION is going to be reached until the Yankees hold their organizational meetings?

BTW, Steinbrenner did NOT say Torre is gone if they lose the series. He said, He did not THINK they would bring him back”. A slight distinction.

Some of you need to understand how teams work when season’s end. They get together and hold organizational meetings.

Because the Yankees are a two state (NY and FL) organization, all of the parties involved in these decisions aren’t under one roof. They have to go to Tampa for these meetings because George is not going back to NY for them.

So, Brian Cashman, Randy Levine and Lonn Trost have to head to Tampa for the meetings. Since Cashman had to meet with the media yesterday, there was NO WAY they were making any decisions. That’s why the meetings aren’t yet taking place.

Since they were expecting to play Game 5 in Cleveland tonight, don’t you think its a little silly to expect news yesterday or today concerning Torre since they haven’t even MET yet?

Nobody is being callous and nobody is twisting anyone in the wind. Stop parroting comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about and just wait it out.

If this is so hard for Joe Torre, he can simply call a news conference and say he isn’t interested in coming back.

Since he isn’t, if he can sit tight, why can’t some of you?

  168. jennifer

So maybe a decision has been made about Joe? or he made a decision. I can’t see him meeting with the media without knowing what is going on.

Now I won’t get anything done at work, I’ll have the sports radio on again, and be on the blog. LOL

  169. SJ44

BTW, Dave Duncan is under contract for one more year in St. Louis. Meaning, he can’t go with LaRussa if LaRussa leaves the Cardinals.

That takes LaRussa out of any consideration for the Yankees job, if he was ever under consideration.

  170. burn bernie burn

wfan just reported that there is a 1:00 press conference tommorow with torre, no news yet on who is attending or what it will reveal.

  171. Dr. Acula

    _what is the hold up._

Olney says they’re waiting for the politburo to assemble to go over all pros and cons before decisions (including a successor) are made.

Steinbrenner may still have some bark, but like King Lear, he’s trying to hand off his Scepter to his issue. So everyone has to get a word in these days. After all, Big Stein wanted to dismiss Torre last year and replace him with Lou, but he allowed others to talk him out of it. He no longer closes his ears to dissenting voices.

  172. catya

    Dr Acula,
If pete went to that kind of place he would meet “Deep throat” but she won’t be talking about the Yankees for sure!!!! lol

  173. SJ44

Torre always has his year end meeting with the media at the stadium.

    Dr. Acula,

I can just see it now…..

The media stakes out George and his sons at Mons Venus, a popular Tampa Strip Club.

Out comes the Steinbrenner Family, after a three hour lunch that includes several lap dances, and they announce the fate of Joe Torre.

If you get video of that, Pete needs to make you Blogger of the Year! lol

  174. NJ

I love trolls who come here trying to stir crap up. I love the ones that pretend to be Yankee fans even more.

  175. Dr. Acula

    SJ44 -

that is rather odd, Dave and Tony having differnt contract lengths. they’ve been together since Chicago. it isn’t likely Dave would want or need to work for someone else.

  176. Tommy

Pete, Were you followed? Did you switch cabs? Lives are in danger!

i dont think torre would have his usual end of season conferenace with the media until he knows his situation for next year, so lets hope he is back.

    Dr,

The Cardinals were smart. They know Duncan’s value.

Rumor is, Duncan is retiring after next season. Seems like he only wants to coach one more year.

  182. migames

Some of you need to understand how teams work when season’s end.

I understand what they are doing, its AWESOME that they get together and discuss the season, not only the manager, but the whole team and they set the tone or the off season, An offseason that includes so much. My comment was to highlight how ridiculous steinbrenner’s comment was. Why couldnt he say “Well, when the season is over, we will all meet in tampa and discuss the future of the manager and the team.”

    Is that so hard?

Because he opened his mouth, all of this comes out

    stop it you bad boy!!!lol

  185. pat

Per WFAN- As of 8:05 There is No news conference tomorrow and no decdision on Torre has been reached.

  186. Dr. Acula

    SJ-

another factor would be Dave wanting to work with Chris, and he probably didn’t foresee the opportunity to work with his other baby boy, David _Shelley_ Duncan.

  187. Peter Abraham

    People:

stop spreading rumors. there is no press conference tomorrow.

  188. SJ44

If I was running the Yankees, here is how I would handle this situation:

    1. Offer Joe the job of Special Assistant to the GM and/or 50 games on YES, whichever he chooses. Managing one more year is not an option. Frankly, that would do more harm than good because George would be all over him from Day 1, if he has one more year.

He doesn’t deserve a 3 year extension and that can’t be on the table. If the above options are unappealing to him, you have say goodbye.

    2. Opening Day 2008: They retire Joe’s number, and they have the ceremony putting his plague in Monument Park. NYC declares Opening Day 2008, “Joe Torre Day”.

    3. Name Mattingly manager at a PC with Torre formally handing over reins to him in typical Yankee showtime fashion.

    4. Dave Eiland is named pitching coach. Sorry, they need an upgrade from Gator and Eiland has done a great job developing the younger arms he has worked with the past few years. Not a great endorsement of Guidry that Eiland was brought up during the season to work with the pitchers.

    5. Larry Bowa is named bench coach, Trey Hillman joins the staff as third base coach.

    5. Retain Tony Pena as catching instructor and first base coach.

    6. Look for another bullpen coach. Whomever Donnie wants, its his call.

  189. 56Bomber

Peter – Steve Somers on WFAN said that 3 Yankee insiders spoke with Sweeney and mentioned that no decision regarding Joe has been made. Steve also mentioned that there would be a 1:00 press conference with Torre at the stadium (which I figured was his traditional end-of-season session with the media – nothing more). Later on the broadcast, they mentioned that there would be no press conference. Thats how the “rumors” got started.

Regarding Torre’s contract… Many players have performance based incentives in their contracts. Any chance that Torre might settle for something like say $5M per year for two years plus a $2M incentive for winning the World Series? I would not be at all surprised to see that Torre is asked to come back but not without some sacrifice… plus it gives George a way to back out of his statement and save some face. I also would not be surprised if the deal included a plan to name Mattingly as the manager starting in 2010. Just my thoughts but I think it would go a long way to making everyone get a bit of what they want. Plus it would probably help retain some key individuals (Arod, Posada, Rivera).

No, capn’ clutch, what I AM saying is that you are an idiot.

  192. Marc

I hate to say this. But George Steinbrenner is in a tough situation. He has to bring Torre back in my opinion. He can’t afford to lose Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, and maybe even Jorge Posada over a managerial position which is not a huge deal. In other sports like football and baseketball, the coach is involved in every single play. It is not that way in baseball. The toughest thing Torre has to do is try to manage the bullpen. Many people criticized him this season on the way he handled the bullpen. But at the end of the day, who could handle the bullpen? The answer is nobody. Torre had so little to work with out there.
The fact is, George Steinbrenner should be the one who shouldn’t have a job. He has not won the Yankees a championship by himself since the late 70’s. When the Yankees won 4 out of 5, it was because Steinbrenner had been kicked out of baseball for a couple of years. It was not Steinbrenner who decided to build within the organization and try to win a championship that way. He always tried to buy the best teams, and since 2002, it has never worked.
The most important thing with a manager is that the players have to want to play hard for him. That is huge. Look at the Mets. They didn’t look like they had any passion to win down the stretch. And that is a reflection of the manager. They didn’t play hard for some reason under Willie. Yeah I know the Yankees started 21-29, but that was at the beginning of the season.
At the end of the day, Torre should be back as manager. But is Steinbrenner does this, it will certainly appear that the New York players, not him, are in charge of the team. And that is something that George will not allow. I think he will drag this decision out on purpose to make it look like he really considered firing Torre. But right now, Steinbrenner (or whoever else is in charge of the team right now) knows that he has to bring back Torre or else it could be the end of the New York Yankees amazing playoff run for a long time.

  193. Joey Bagadonuts

George Steinbrenner, apparently in one of his occasionally lucid moments, kicked off this whole circus with his comments to the Record reporter. As migames said, it wouldn’t have been so hard to make a general statement about evaluating everything, including the manager, after the season.

So Torre becomes a sympathetic figure to millions watching on TV, forced to manage his team with a guillotine poised over his head.

What would ALSO be “callous”, (besides reporters hanging out in the guys front yard in defiance of his request for personal privacy that is) would be for the Yankees to then drop the axe immediatly after the loss, acting rashly on George’s bluster, instead of conducting a complete and careful consideratin of which direction to go.

Now the fan base is doubly pissed off. First for the way the team got beat badly in the first round yet again, but also now because of the Torre situation.

I happen to be in the anti-Torre camp myself, but by shooting his mouth off when and how he did, George did nothing so much as to spark an outpouring of support for Joe – which now must be taken into account, along with the guy’s strengths and weakness as a baseball manager for this team going forward.

After another first round pounding, potential loss of AROD, unsettled status of MO and Jorge and with all the “end of an era” angst afoot, the Yankees have a serious public relations problem brewing. Replacing Torre at this point might be more PR trouble than it’s worth.

How come when many in the media accuse the Yankees of letting Torre “twist in the wind” and all, and slam the team for even considering replacing him given everything he’s done – they never look at their own complicity in creating these narratives, and their own behavior in pursuing their stories and quotes and the way they spin them. Talk about a herd mentality.

ps If the Yankees trade Hughes and Cano for Santana I’ll throw up. And then I’ll be in the seriously pissed off part of the fan base. Talk about a return to the ways of the 80s

  194. No Morre Torre

You don’t reward Torre after another embarassing first round exit, you just don’t.

NEWSFLASH: THERE ARE ONLY TWO OPEN SPOTS FOR MANAGER IN M.L.B:

Kansas City (Buddy Bell stepped down.)
    Pittsburgh (Jim Tracy was fired.)

St.Louis might have an opening if LaRussa doesn’t return.

I doubt Torre would want to manage K.C. or Pittsburgh and I doubt either team would ask about him. I could see Torre returning to St.Louis. I think that’d be the team he’d want to return to out of the three. Maybe not as his wife and newest child are nicely ensconsed in Harrison, NY. Do they really want to pack up for St.Louis?

My prediction of what will happen:

The Yanks will hire Tony LaRussa or someone else as their new manager. Torre will either wait until the right manager job becomes available in 2009 or retire. If there is no right manager job open for 2009, Torre will retire as I doubt he’d want to manager again at whatever age he’ll be in 2010 (68? 69?)

If I were Torre, I’d just announce my retirement now. I’m neither fired nor let go. I’m neither quitting nor refusing to return. Who could blame me for retiring at age 65 or 66? If people want to say I’m retiring to save face, whatever, who are those people to me? Nothing.

I mean seriously folks, you think Torre gives a _____ what people think of him? He doesn’t care what Steinbrenner thinks of him, and I betcha he went off on Steinbrenner more than once. What’s Steinbrenner gonna do, fire him over an ef you and eat all that money? I doubt it. Steinbrenner probably respects Torre cursing him out, you know these macho ex-football coach types lol.

    SAME GUY?

    PLEASE SHUT UP!!!!!!!

  197. saucy

_Didn’t the Bergen Record quote Steinbrenner as also stating that Froemming would never umpire another Yankee game or words to that effect? As if he had veto power over the umpiring crew?_

This is Froemming’s last season in baseball, so maybe he was referring to that.

    Good Riddance.

_The Yanks should let go of Posada because he’s too old to give the 3 years he wants. Yes, I know, he hit .338 this year, but that was an anomaly. History more specifically his career .277 BA and only two other times he finished .281 or better (.281 in 2003, .287 in 2000) shows that. He never finished with a .300 or better BA until this year._

i’d take that chance. i could see if he busted out of the gates in spring and his leveled off towards the end, but he was pretty consistant all year. i’d give him 3 and if his production tails off towards the end, he then becomes what girardi was to him.

HAHA It’s about time it’s up and running. I can’t believe I actually had to work today. :P Just kidding.

Now if only Pete would show up and update the blog!

Also Steve Summers is an ass, he said there was a press conference, than said ooops we made a mistake there is none. Meanwhile it spread all over the net.

  201. Westchester Dave

Must have been really rough on the trolls today without posting to keep themselves busy.

  202. Bob

Geez Pete, with all the ESPN gigs you’ve had lately, I thought maybe you were too big for us now and shut down the blog. ;)

  203. Sherri

I’ve had major withdrawals today. We don’t need this happening too often!!!

  204. Sherri

Did you guys see on yankees.com where Roger Clemens has come out now, too, in support of Torre?

  205. DadinIowa

I’m glad the blog is back too. Now, if only the Boss would come out and make Torre’s status clear. I think it is unkind to delay. IMHO, keep Torre for two more years, publicly make Girardi the heir apparent, send Donnie to manage in the minors for a couple years in case the Torre/Girardi plan fails for any reason.

Resign Mo, Po, extend A-Rod, keep Pettit, sign Minky for another year, pick up option on Abreau, and get the kiddie pitchers ready for next year.

Oh, and think about a six man rotation to keep the innings low for the rookies. Rotation: Wang, Pettit, Mussina, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy.

Finally, trade Farns for a bag o’ balls and let Olendorf/Bruney, Britton, Veras, E-Ram fight over who gets the 8th inning gig.

Reward Cash with an extension, and let the good times roll in 08!!!

  206. saucy

wow, my one response today actually went through. this page loaded once of the 34432452 times i tried refreshing during work today.

  208. Wolf In Pinstripes

Guys, Pete posted an update over on Yankees Chick’s website earlier today while this blog was down – go check it out there.

  209. SUPER BASEBALL EXPERT MAN

Ugh, it’s going to be another long 6.5 months.

  210. KIRBY

anyone been to Mo’s restaurant before?

  211. Scud Missile

    Simple solution:

Resign Torre on a one year contract pronto so that we can then resign all the key pieces in order of importance: Rivera, Arod, Posada, Molina. Pick up Abreu’s option. Trade Matsui for bullpen help and tell Giambi he can stay at home playing video games with Pavano this season or accept a trade elsewhere. We would have to eat much of his salary, but we could use a decent bullpen arm like a Scott Shields in place of him.

Take on the 2008 season. If Torre is not getting the job done after 3-4 weeks, give him his pink slip and get Donny Baseball or Joey G in here.

  212. Justin

Mo’s restaurant looks mighty pricey. But nice nonetheless. Is this blog finally back on it’s feet? I’ve been slowly dying without it.

  213. Dr. Acula

First off, I want to congratulate Al Leiter on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Al comes from my neck of the wood, Toms River. Way to go, AL! You’ve done good!

Now, on the Torre front, it looks like Joe is being cast as “Jason” from the “Friday the 13th” flicks, cuz he JUST KEEPS COMING BACK !!!!

According to today’s Post, _if_ the Yankee brain trust can’t agree on an successor next week in Tampa, _and if_ Torre agrees to take a paycut, he could return.

Citing “personS in the know,” the Post reports Steinbrenner was affected by Mariano support for Torre’s return.

If Torre survives Tuesday at the Tampa Summit, he has to realize his $7 million a year salary we be reduced.

Torre was easily the highest-paid manager this year in the majors, eclipsing Lou Piniella’s $3.5 million salary with the Cubs.

Steinbrenner has chafed at paying Torre so much money – the deal was negotiated by former son-in-law Steve Swindal – getting Torre to return at a reduced rate would help The Boss save face.

  214. Joey Bagadonuts

    The plot thickens……..

  215. Bosco

“Resign Torre on a one year contract pronto so that we can then resign all the key pieces in order of importance: Rivera, Arod, Posada, Molina.”

    Is this a joke?

In order of importance, the free agents go A-Rod, Posada, Rivera. Mariano is easily the most replaceable of the 3. In fact, he’s the only one that is replaceable.

  216. saucy

    Acula! Ocean County reprezent!

as much as i don’t think the $7/year was completely ridiculous (like some do), i don’t think Torre would expect that much if he tried getting a job elsewhere. i think he’d agree to a paycut.

  217. Ranting Guy

I say don’t trade anyone for Santana, especially the 3 kid pitchers. Wait a year for him to become a free agent.

Santana’s got one year left on his contract, and so does Mussina. Also, Pettitte has one option year left. Those two contracts together = Santana $$ plus almost 50%. Mussina’s alone is almost 2/3 of what Santana might expect in the free agent market. Plus, a $5M team buyout option on Giambi’s $22M ‘09 salary is just one year away. All three of those contracts = almost $50M/yr.

Can someone say extend A-Rod this year and sign Santana as a FA next year?

Well it would be nice to extend Pettitte’s contract if he has 3 good years left, but that’s another topic ….

Santana, Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Chamberlain. Now, chances are we’ll be more than happy to send any 5 of those 6 guys to the mound every day of the season starting in ‘09.

Of course looking up to or even beyond ‘10 / ‘11 (my guess at Pettitte’s retirement) is impossible w/o a crystal ball, but it could be that offering Santana 5-7 years instead of extending Pettitte is the better way to go.

Matsui … I still think he just needs a little work done on his knees and he’ll be a reliable .300/25/100+ player again.

Abreu … someone pointed out that there aren’t many other options available this off season, at least none who will be equal to an average year for him. What are the chances he has another half-season slump, anywhere near as bad as he did this year? I’d say probably not. In May/June I was all for trading him away. But now? Maybe picking up his option would be a better choice.

Damon … LF/DH platoon with Matsui. Melky owns CF now, but please Johnny, come to spring training in good shape. It seems every April he has cramps or conditioning problems with his legs.

Giambi … Aaaaargh! How soon can he be bribed to accept a trade? Might be able to get someone in return at the trade deadline if some team would take him with the agreement that NY picks up the last 2 months of his ‘08 salary plus the $5M buyout for ‘09.

Jeter & Cano … Robbie bounced back after the first half. Jeter is Jeter. NO changes.

1B … Did anyone notice Mientkiewicz actually hitting in the .270s at the end of the year? That’s better than Giambi, and Dougie brings glove. Maybe not worth spending a ton more money than it would to keep him there. If him being there also contributes to keeping A-Rod happy & in pinstripes (yes I know there are many more factors involved with A-Rod) that’s fine with me.

Catcher … Posada & Molina were a good combo. If Posada doesn’t come back, Molina can probably get the job done adequately. Otherwise, maybe Tony Pena (or even Torre?) could strap on the equipment again.

  218. Joey Bagadonuts

As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted

  219. Keith

Here’s a question – Anybody remember Roger Clemens saying at the beginning of HIS season that Steinbrenner told him something very special and meaningful? (or some crap like that) And that he’d reveal it at the end of the year?!?!

Well, its certainly the end of the year and no news?! Anybody with me on this. Pete?

  220. jay destro

    i missed you bloggy blog!

  221. saucy

Ranting Guy, i think if we wait until Johan enteres free agency, we may have waited to long. someone else may have traded for and extend him by then.
