Tampa meeting set to commence

The much-anticipated meeting in Tampa will get started tonight. It’s not like they pass out agendas to these things, so nobody knows when they will reach a decision on Joe Torre. But expect to hear some news on that front tomorrow.

I would love to tell you I know what the Yankees will do with the manager but I really don’t. I was convinced last week that Don Mattingly would get the job and I still expect that to happen. But at some point in that room, those people will have to look each other in the eye and decide a man with no managerial experience whatsoever is better for their team than Torre.

Now that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner are flexing their muscles, the landscape has changed. Nobody knows what they are thinking.

But it was telling last week when Brian Cashman failed to rise to Torre’s defense. You get the sense that Cashman wants a manager he can help mold.

Whether it’s Larry Bowa or some other old hand, the Yankees need to make sure they hire a strong bench coach if Mattingly is their manager.
