In pursuit of a meeting

Peter Abraham
October
16

This can be such a undignified profession at times.

It turns out the vaunted meeting is not at Legends Field. It’s somewhere else in Tampa. So the reporters who have been staking out the parking lots and Steinbrenner Drive (yes, it’s actually called Steinbrenner Drive) are now driving around Tampa looking for the meeting.

Fortunately, I am not among them. I’m working the story from New York.

No news has emerged as of yet.

no offense but I can just see a caravan of cars of reporters driving around Tampa looking with binoculars out the window looking for Cashman or one of the Steinbrenners. Hey at least they are out of the heat and in AC

  2. 56Bomber

What a circus! Brings back fond memories – think I’ll watch the Bronx in Burning DVD tonight while we wait for news.

  3. jennifer

Now they’ll head back to Legends Field. :P

  4. BillyJoBob

How embarrassing. Yanks staff must be laughing their asses off imagining the same thing.

  5. Jeff NJ

How’s that for irony? The Yankees built their stadium right next to Steinbrenner Drive. Guess that’s how they knew where the best place to build would be.

  6. This Year

This is theater of the absurd, through the looking glass stuff. Just get on with it guys.

  7. Drew

    There probably at Shoney’s.

  8. Loren

Pete, anyone tell you that you and Mark Feinsand of the News look like brothers?

  9. Aziz

At the meeting, who do you think sits at the head of the table? George? Hank? Hal? Cashman?

  10. Drew

“Pete, anyone tell you that you and Mark Feinsand of the News look like brothers?”

I don’t see that, but Feinsand does resemble Mike Golic.

  11. TKinDC

Maybe Bill Belichick has some footage of Steinbrenner moving around town?

  12. GiantsYankeesBaby!

    What a soap opera!

  13. brothers

yes pete you & mark look alike think alike & write alike

  14. NJ

they’re probably at the hotel that they own down here. It’s really not that hard to figure out where they would be.

  15. ItalianGreco

At least we know LaRussa is not driving. We all know he is drunk and he learned his lesson.

  16. PB in DC

    Yawn…

Let’s get on with it already.

  17. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

God, this tension is killing me.

    Make a damn decision already!!!

  18. saucy

it’d be hilarious if it turned out they were all in NY. Rubenstein’s office or something…

  19. RER - Fla.

    Peter:

Call your media buddies and tell them to go to George’s favorite restaurant, Bern’s Steak House. The media’s been snookered into hanging around Legends Field.

  20. jennifer

    They are at Jeter’s house.

  21. migames

    they are sj44’s house

  22. BklynYank

    Bwhahaha thats funny

Hey they should call their paparazzi brethren those guys can find anyone anywhere and always catch them in the act. Just ask Paris, Brittney, and Lindsey

  23. Ricky Rios

I’m sorry, but this is freakin hilarious.

    They’ve gone to the mattresses.

  24. John in Ohio

I think I’d be heading for the Columbia in Ybor City to think things over while enjoying a few of the best Mojitos in the world. Pete….do you concur??

  25. ROY

Big Stein was last seen cruising in a white Ford Bronco just outside of Tampa.

  26. S.o.S.27

I think they are at Pavano’s house wanting to see what manager he would like to pitch for.

  27. Aziz

They are probably meeting in NY. That would really throw everyone off.

  28. marc

I believe that Steinbrenner has really lost his marbles and has no idea of whats going on. His PR guys and family speak on his behalf.

  29. G. Love

To me, this meeting should come down to one thing — Andy Pettite. If replacing Torre with Mattingly and replacing Gator with possibly Eiland means Pettite doesn’t come back, then you have to suck it up and bring back Torre.

There is no replacement for Andy Pettite on the free agent market. That means we have to trade to replace him and what are the other teams going to want for a pitcher (who is unproven in NY by the way)? Young pitching. Exactly what we can’t give up.

Unless you tell me we’re going to turn Ian Kennedy into Oswalt, I make the moves that ensure Andy picks up his option and heads a young staff next season. His experience, poise and toughness is irreplacable. We’ve been attempting to replace it since he left. Torre should have started him game 1. I’ve come to the point where I’m fine if Torre goes but not at the cost of our best big game starter.

If retaining Torre means Pettite is 1/5th of our rotation next season, then keep him around.

I think the other free agents in Mo, Arod, Posada are not Torre dependent. They’ll be back if the price is right.

Pettite operates on a different train of thought than those guys and if the idea of no Torre in the clubhouse makes him want to stay home or pitch in Houston again, we can’t afford to lose him.

  30. Drew

I can’t believe people are losing sleep over this.

  31. jennifer

Yeah is anyone sure that Cash got on a plane last night for Tampa? Maybe it is being held at the Yesnetwork offices in the Crysler building. WOuldn’t that be a hoot. All the papers fly down to Tampa and they are right here in NY.

  32. mel

What is this? The Papal Election? White smoke means a new leader of the Yankee Universe has been chosen! Oh, wait. That’s just the smoke from the grill at the steakhouse.

  33. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe)

My sources are telling me that Torre will not be back.

Pete, sorry to scoop you on your own blog.

  34. We Miss Paulie

    Clay – thats good.

  35. J-Dawg

Maybe the meeting is taking place at a Tampa Wal-Mart.

  36. Stephen

Gordon Edes has details of next year’s Yanks/Sox schedule:

    http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....rap_up_08/

  37. Drew

“Can you ever remember a time in any sport when everyone, players and fans, are calling for the return of a manager and its still in question?”

There are a lot of fans who don’t want Torre back.

  38. We Miss Paulie

I know this is the Yankees, but every year, its a circus like this. Nobody else has this kind of season aftermath.

The Yankees made the playoffs. They had the highest number of runs scored, had the best record in the second half of the year.

Aside from CMW getting crushed in 2 games and therefore being outpitched in the post season, tell me, WHATS SO WRONG WITH THIS TEAM?

Just get some better pitching, thats all, and the team is unbelievable.

  39. rico

While we are waiting, I am intrigued by this other story. Has anyone seen Mark Feinsand and Pete in the same place at the same time? Is there a photograph? They think, write, and look alike, but collect two paychecks . …. hmmm.

  40. tessa

@ mel: That would be better than some of the other smoke blowing that has been going on.

  41. Jim from LI

Like most others, I want Joe to return as manager, and I was encouraged by the news reports that Mattingly had indicated he wasn’t ready. Now his agent states it’s “fabricated” and Mattingly is ready to take the job.
I hope he has what it takes, because it will be a sad day if “Donnie Baseball” is fired after not making the playoffs.

  42. Jeff

Just spoke to Hal…Mattingly will be the manager! Yes!

  43. Count of Montefusco

Girardi is not unproven. He was Manager of the Year.

  44. PAT M.....

Just sign a good right hand hitting OF,,,,wouldn’t AroonRowland look great in CF next season with Melkt going to RF…….

  45. Gayle

I have one major pet peeve about this whole thing and the media. Why do some members of the media continue to say that Torre could be fired. This is not the case he has n ot contract so the correct term would that he would not be brought back not fired. very different and very distinct things

  46. Designated Blogger

Since Mattingly is supposedly worried about filling Torre’s shoes, how about easing Mattingly into the job. Torre can be the home manager, Mattingly the road manager. Either way, we still need a new full-time pitching coach (sorry Gator).

  47. hmmm

“drew, why would any yankee fan not want torre back? who would do a better job next year? La Russa? A guy like tony would need some adjustment with these players.

    mattingly? he isnt ready yet.

    Giradi? unproven.”

Joe Torre is 67. if this doesn’t happen now, it’s going to happen in 2-3 years at the latest. and Mattingly and Girardi will still be “unproven”.

    Torre can’t manage forever.

and Torre wasn’t exactly the reigning manager of the year when he got his shot in 1996. he was a pretty unsuccessful manager. let’s not forget that.

if you are never willing to take a chance, you will never achieve anything.

  48. G. Love

Actually Gayle, for point of reference, Joe Torre is still under contract as the Yankees manager until October 31st. He still is the Yankee manager until that date.

  49. RJ

    at times ? LOL…that is funny !

  50. Designated Blogger

BTW, the meeting isn’t in Tampa. I just drove past Torre’s house. Parked out front was Hal’s car, Hank’s car, Cashman’s car, and George’s Lil Rascal.

  51. Rob

This is a lot of drama just to find out Torre is going to manage the team to yet another poor start, followed by a strong finish which burns the team out, that again leads to another 1st round playoff loss.

Wake me when the Yankees actually decide to move forward with fresh leadership.

    YAWN

  52. jennifer

J-Dawg – the NY media is in trouble than. there are a million Walmarts down in FLA. Much like there are a million Starbucks in NYC.

  53. pat

Tampa meeting has adjourned. No decision will be announced today.

  54. SJ44

All this, “Mattingly is not ready” stuff cracks me up.

The guy has been in the game for his entire life. This is not rocket science. He doesn’t need to go to the minor leagues to manage in order to be “ready”.

He has spent his ENTIRE professional career as a NY Yankee. I would argue, NOBODY knows more about what the job entails more than Don Mattingly.

When Joe Torre was hired to manage the Yankees, his career record was over 100 games UNDER .500.

If the internet was in existence back then, I doubt ANYBODY would have predicted he would have the success he has had in NY.

I want to see the person who would have predicted 6 WS, 4 championships and 12 post-season appearances for a guy who had only a single playoff appearance in both his playing and managing careers, prior to coming to the Yankees.

Could you imagine some of the posts back then….

“How could the Yankees hire a loser as a manager”?…

“The guy has NEVER been to a World Series, how can he manage the Yankees”?….

    My point?

Nobody can predict who is ready and who isn’t. At some point, Don Mattingly will be the next manager of the New York Yankees. Its going to happen.

If they bring back Torre, then Mattingly may have to wait a year or two. If they don’t, he’s the guy in 2008.

Either way, he is going to manage the team and I doubt seriously he lacks “credentials” for the job since the last guy they hired wasn’t even close to .500 as a manager in his career and he turned out ok.

  55. Ranting Guy

I wouldn’t be surprised if “the meeting” isn’t even being held in Tampa.

Maybe when they find out where it is, it’ll sort of be like when the press finds out where to go in the movie The Birdcage.

Be glad you didn’t get an ‘invite’ Pete. No offense to any of ANSKY management, but there’s an image I juuust don’t want in my head. Ian Kennedy’s get-up for the Wizard of Oz was at least funny, but that’s enough of that for this season.

  56. rover

actually due to the early exit, the whole team is at disney.
