I wouldn't be surprised if "the meeting" isn't even being held in Tampa.

Maybe when they find out where it is, it'll sort of be like when the press finds out where to go in the movie The Birdcage.

Be glad you didn't get an 'invite' Pete. No offense to any of ANSKY management, but there's an image I juuust don't want in my head. Ian Kennedy's get-up for the Wizard of Oz was at least funny, but that's enough of that for this season.

All this, "Mattingly is not ready" stuff cracks me up.

The guy has been in the game for his entire life. This is not rocket science. He doesn't need to go to the minor leagues to manage in order to be "ready".

He has spent his ENTIRE professional career as a NY Yankee. I would argue, NOBODY knows more about what the job entails more than Don Mattingly.

When Joe Torre was hired to manage the Yankees, his career record was over 100 games UNDER .500.

If the internet was in existence back then, I doubt ANYBODY would have predicted he would have the success he has had in NY.

I want to see the person who would have predicted 6 WS, 4 championships and 12 post-season appearances for a guy who had only a single playoff appearance in both his playing and managing careers, prior to coming to the Yankees.

Could you imagine some of the posts back then....

"How could the Yankees hire a loser as a manager"?...

"The guy has NEVER been to a World Series, how can he manage the Yankees"?....

My point?

Nobody can predict who is ready and who isn't. At some point, Don Mattingly will be the next manager of the New York Yankees. Its going to happen.

If they bring back Torre, then Mattingly may have to wait a year or two. If they don't, he's the guy in 2008.

Either way, he is going to manage the team and I doubt seriously he lacks "credentials" for the job since the last guy they hired wasn't even close to .500 as a manager in his career and he turned out ok.

This is a lot of drama just to find out Torre is going to manage the team to yet another poor start, followed by a strong finish which burns the team out, that again leads to another 1st round playoff loss.

Wake me when the Yankees actually decide to move forward with fresh leadership.

BTW, the meeting isn't in Tampa. I just drove past Torre's house. Parked out front was Hal's car, Hank's car, Cashman's car, and George's Lil Rascal.

Actually Gayle, for point of reference, Joe Torre is still under contract as the Yankees manager until October 31st. He still is the Yankee manager until that date.

"drew, why would any yankee fan not want torre back? who would do a better job next year? La Russa? A guy like tony would need some adjustment with these players.

mattingly? he isnt ready yet.

Giradi? unproven."

Joe Torre is 67. if this doesn't happen now, it's going to happen in 2-3 years at the latest. and Mattingly and Girardi will still be "unproven".

Torre can't manage forever.

and Torre wasn't exactly the reigning manager of the year when he got his shot in 1996. he was a pretty unsuccessful manager. let's not forget that.

if you are never willing to take a chance, you will never achieve anything.
