According to several reports, the meeting is at George Steinbrenner’s house in Tampa. Now the media is gathered outside the gates.

Potsdam and Yalta were less complicated than this conference.

KEEP TORRE AND GET RID OF MATTINGLY!

  2. eric October 16th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

this whole meeting thing is so ridiculous, yet i’m pathetically obsessed with knowing what’s going on down there.

  3. Rob L. October 16th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

no…get rid of Renney and hire Mattingly

  4. section 344 October 16th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Yankees should of put the meetings on ppv. They would of cleaned up.

Mattingly in the Denver Post back in June

Mattingly’s own name has been mentioned in discussions of a successor to Torre. It was even mentioned earlier this year when the once-mighty Yankees mightily struggled. He hasn’t been considered seriously by other clubs and isn’t on a short or long list for the vacant Baltimore job.

“I’m not ready to be a manager. I don’t deserve to have that position yet,” Mattingly said without hesitation. “When I was the hitting coach I was locked in a tunnel, concentrating on just one aspect of the game. This is my first year of looking at the entire game, and I’m learning about managing the game and the lengthy season from one of the best managers in baseball history.

“I have no timeline. The way I look at it is I’m too old to be a player, and I’m too young to be a manager, and I’m somewhere in between. I’m happy as a coach. If and when my opportunity comes up, I want to be totally prepared for it.”

Pretty hard to climb down from those statements. He’s not ready and shouldn’t get the job.

or a reality show at least but it would probably hurt too many people’s feelings in the organization. Players get all bent out of shape over arbitration imagine if these meetings went over the air, you would have a full on mutiny but it would make great TV. better than that roadtrip show on YES

  7. mel October 16th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

I was resigned to Torre being gone after 2006, so it was great to have him back in ’07.

Now? I’m done with all the drama. I don’t really have a preference who’s manager next year, as long as we win and as long as it’s not La Russa. Oh, and it’ll be nice to have Andy, Georgie (Jorge), Alex, and Mo back, too. Sniff, sniff, Torre used to call Jorge ‘Georgie’.

  8. RJ October 16th, 2007 at 4:20 pm

Joe Torre for 3 more years….then he can fade out into the sunset, then finish off his baseball career as a Yankees Announcer…..God Bless Him !

  9. Mike S. October 16th, 2007 at 4:21 pm

The big question is who was/is in better shape, FDR at Yalta or the Boss here?

  10. saucy October 16th, 2007 at 4:23 pm

post-game interviews are one thing, but he says ‘y-know’ way too much to be an announcer…

  11. Joe Monte October 16th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

That would be tremendous to see Torre as a Yankee announcer over Michael Kay. You wonder how much Torre wants deal w/ this circus anymore.

  12. junonia October 16th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

Peter – Gordon Eddes has printed a schedule for the Red Sox for the 2008 season – or at least a tentative and partial one. Can you do the same for us? And how about Spring Training – it would be great to be able to make some plans for a trip to Tampa. Thanks

  13. mel October 16th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

It is widely believed that Torre will be donning a suit at Fox if he’s not in a uni next year.

  14. Paul9 October 16th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Will we know the outcome today or will in linger into tomorrow?

  15. saucy October 16th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

does that mean that sox fans have already conceded the alds and are looking forward to next year? lol

  16. Paul9 October 16th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

They should play pin the tale on the donkey and whoever wins gets to choose the next manager. Sounds like fun to me.

  17. mel October 16th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

    Paul9,

    How about musical chairs?

  18. Drew October 16th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

“The big question is who was/is in better shape, FDR at Yalta or the Boss here?”

    Ouch…LOL

  19. G. Love October 16th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

If Torre isn’t retained here, he’ll be named the next manager of the Mets probably around June 1st.

Next season, Willie should keep his personal items in boxes in the manager’s office just to streamline the whole process.

  20. mel October 16th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

    From Verducci,

    5. OK, you’ve probably heard too much already about those infamous sacrifice flies of Cleveland, the mighty midges that, unlike almost all AL hitters, knocked Yankees phenom Joba Chamberlain off his game. But this is too good not to pass on: When the bugs started swarming Chamberlain, a local insect expert in Cleveland telephoned the Indians with an urgent message — those bugs are called midges, and whatever you do, do NOT use insect repellent; midges are attracted to the stuff. The Yankees practically bathed in bug spray; the more Chamberlain put on, the more the bugs swarmed him. So there you go. The Yankees can spend $190 million on payroll and still leave a blatant weakness: no, not their middle relief — their lack of an entymology expert.

    ?!

  21. jay destro October 16th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

this sounds more like the apalachin meeting if you ask me.

  22. migames October 16th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Torre will be offered another job within the organization

  23. migames October 16th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

    IMO…..no clue whats gonna happen

  24. Gayle October 16th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

lol no decision reached meetings resume tomorrow according to statement by rubenstein announced onm wfan

  25. jennifer October 16th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Meeting is over for the day, with no decision made yet on Torre’s future.

  26. Dan October 16th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

    According to WFAN:

Ajourned for the day. No comments out of Tampa today. Yankees have made no decisions and meetings will resume tomorrow.

  27. jennifer October 16th, 2007 at 4:43 pm

mel If thats true, that makes me feel even worse. :(

  28. migames October 16th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

whats up with the yankees slacking off at 4:45pm. They dont even work till 5…..weak

  29. NJ October 16th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

Hmm, I know where big Stein lives. Maybe I’ll pay them a visit.

  30. Dan October 16th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

They’re going to have a sleepover hahaha..

    Man, is this story overblown.

  31. G. Love October 16th, 2007 at 5:18 pm

They should name the next manager through a contest like Battle of the Network Stars or American Gladiators.

I’d put my money on Valentine. The whole low center of gravity thing and the fact that he’d throw salt in his opponents eyes like Mr. Fuji would assure he’d be the last man standing.

  32. Ranting Guy October 16th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

Section 344 – Maybe if they PPV the meetings it could help pay for A-Rod’s contract extension. Count Boras claims he’s worth a billion in TV revenues, right?

  33. Sherri October 16th, 2007 at 5:35 pm

Does Torre have a 7-year consulting deal built into his contract? I thought I read that somewhere and I was just curious…
