Who is running these meetings, the Marx Brothers? What a joke.

  2. migames

whats up with the yankees slacking off at 4:45pm. They dont even work till 5…..weak

  3. Rob

Tune in tomorrow Same Yank Time, Same Yank Channel.

Is it still a cliffhanger if no one even cares anymore?

  4. TK_NYY

If they were going to let Torre go, they needed to do it a lot sooner then this. At this point, letting him hang this long, they are looking like fools.

  5. Joe

This is silly……..and the saga continues…..

  6. wood is good

Why are these meeting a joke? How can anyone expect huge multiple decisions to be made in one or two days? Yeesh.

  7. Will

This is absurd, they have left Torre hanging, and we look like a bunch of horses asses. Figure it out morons!! Either Joe stays or goes!

  8. migames

who is leading the yankees? This is stupid

  9. Drive 4-5

We know white smoke means there’s a new manager. What color smoke comes out of the chimney when they want to indicate indecision?

  10. mel

    No news is…good news?

    Pete,
Can you use your investigative reporting to find out the agenda and priority of items at the meetings? Torre and the Stein Succession are not the only things that need to be discussed. Or are personnel moves (i.e. negotiations with current Yankee FA’s) done by Cashman?

  11. Will

This is just ridiculous, and where the hell are these clowns going at 4:30 p.m. The 7 of those geniuses cant work more then 4 hours in a day. Joe deserves better then this, and now they are a bunch of indecisive jackasses. FIGURE IT OUT GUYS!!! WE AREN’T THE METS!

  12. Rich Myers

If we get a hung jury can we throw this bunch out and install a new ownership team?

  13. Jonathon

Who’s more foolish? The fool, or the fool who follows him.

  14. Mr. T

There are reports that martians have landed in central park. Seriously, these guys love the attention. They probably sat around all day telling each other knock knock jokes.

  15. jk

I do not see how Torre is “hanging”. He will find out his fate soon enough. His contract runs thru the end of October. He is still employed by the Yankees. If he is let go, he will have plenty of time to find another managers job.

  16. migames

    well put obi wan….

  17. Will

How is it hanging? Give the man who has taken you to the playoffs for 12 years a freakin straight answer!! Either YES OR NO, you will have the job or not.

  18. marc

Anyone read the page six Jeter article?

  19. Jonathon

May the force be with you, always…

  20. 56Bomber

Well, if its true that Joe, his wife, and his daughter have left Westchester County airport on a plane headed for Tampa – as a blogger reported on the previous blog entry – then that can mean only one thing… or maybe two.

  21. Rebecca--Nothing beats Optimism!

OK, seriously, what’s so complicated about this?

Yankees’ fans want Torre back (well, a lot of them, anyway)
Giuliani and Bloomberg want him back.
Po, Mo, Jeter and Co want him back.

Sign him to a contract and include the proviso:

_The undersigned hereby agrees not to attempt to manage the bullpen, but instead to let the pitching coach and *new* bullpen coach handle said matter._

Or, at the very least, make Dave Eiland the full time pitching coach?

C’mon Steinny. Steinnies. I know this is New York, but still.

Can we at least know before Colorado sweeps Cleveland in the least-watched World Series since 1994?

  22. Will

    Jeter is livin the Dream…

That Page Six article was pure gold.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/10.....agesix.htm

  23. Brian in CT

I think we can probably all agree that this has to mean Joe stays. I see no reason why they would wait 8-9 days, then let him go. If it turns out they do let him go, it becomes obvious there is no one in charge.

  24. EdWhitson

Page 6…..seems that hitting into double plays is not the only thing Jeter likes to do in twos………..

  25. LathamJoe

What’s the big deal? Torre has until the end of the Month until his contract expires. There a many other personnel decisions to be made other than Torre, some may or may not have an impact on who the next manager is (Rivera, Posada,
A-rod, Abreu, a rebilt bullpen, etc.) These are important decisions that take time and much discussion – not something that should be decided in haste.

My take is that General George, not in the best of health both mentally and physically, was unwittingly left to the press and made his unfortunate statement about Torre being on the hot seat. Other than that bad judgement, the Yankees have been very fair with Torre and his 3 year, $7.5 Mil contract. Even without George’s statemet, the speculation about Torre’s job would have been exactly the same given the fact that the Yankees finished their 3rd straight 1st round exit with the highest payroll in baseball.
If you were the CEO of this Corporation, wouldn’t you have a lengthy summit to discuss its future ?

  26. eric

    george probably needed a nap.

  27. Go Tampa Bay

to commemorate the Rockies’ success this season, I’m predicting the Devil Rays will win WS 2008.

  28. hmmm

“This is absurd, they have left Torre hanging, and we look like a bunch of horses asses. Figure it out morons!! Either Joe stays or goes!”

i don’t understand this sentiment being repeated here.

they are looking at all the options and trying to make the best decision.

why does this mean there is some sort of “stupidity” going on?

in one thread, people argue that Torre should make the most money b/c it’s the toughest, most important job in sports. but in this thread, everyone wants to hand this “toughest job” out without thinking it through.

    relax people.

  29. marc

    hmm,

I agree, Joe isnt the only topic.

They have to decide on Ansy, Arod, Posada, Joba…

  30. Rockin' Rich

    I think they’ve adjourned to Mons Venus…

  31. SJ44

    Agreed Latham Joe.

The Yankees have a lot on their plates right now. If Joe Torre doesn’t like the timetable, he is welcome to say he no longer wants to manage the team and move on.

You don’t hear him complaining so why should anybody else?

What the fans want is immaterial to their decisionmaking. The fans aren’t going to make this decision.

Its not an easy decision. There is the “small” matter of his contract if they want him back.

He’s not going to make 7 million again as Yankee manager, IMO. That means, how many years/dollars do you offer him?

I don’t know but, at least to me, its going to take a little longer than 6 or 7 hours to have consensus on that decision.

  32. philly

Derek just remember- Pay for Parking!!

  33. Rick (Columbus)

Unreal! How can it not be killing Torre?
Too many Cooks in the kitchen?

  34. Rockin' Rich

By the way, Jeter needs to start validating parking.

  35. sunny615

A minute ago, I thought I saw a flag flying over yankee stadium in the breeze… nope, just torre.

  36. Sin City Yank

The longer this goes the better the chances that Father Joe comes back

  37. SJ44

How is it “killing” Torre? He has a contract that runs until October 31.

He’s like any other employee, although much better compensated, who is awaiting the results of his job review.

He’s not “twisting in the wind” in the slightest since he is still employed by the Yankees.

If the decision goes beyond October 31, which it won’t, then say they are “killing” him.

Absent that, they aren’t doing anything wrong to Joe Torre.

  38. migames

If this was the day after the playoffs, i understand. Its been 9 days since the final out. Either you want Torre or you dont. This has less to do with Torre than the yankee leadership.

Stienbrenner already said that TOrre wouldnt come back if we lose, we lost.
Everyone and their mothers know that there are a handful of candidates, Im sure randy levine, brian cashman, gene michael and the rest had their choice. Its not like today they sat down and were like what should we do about torre.

Basically this just proves that the yankees are being led by 2 guy who a month ago didnt want anything to do with the yankees and now the are making critical decisions.

The two sons shouldnt be apart of this. If Cashman had control of this team. They should give him the decision. Why discuss this in a committee.

Who is in charge of the yankees?

This decision isnt about what color the seats are going to be in the new stadium. This is a baseball decision. Give the man who took over the reins that decision.

And one more thing, meeting for 4 hours. Thats just sad.

  39. Annie Savoy

Most corporations have monthly directors meetings and the agenda is always set ahead of time. Apparently the Steinbrenner’s do things differently. Surely they knew that several players’ contracts were up and other issues that would come before the meeting. They also knew that Torre’s contract was up. Something is wrong here………

  40. Brayden

i hope we find out by tomorrow

  41. Lori

I really wasn’t expecting any formal “announcement” today anyway. Even if the Yankees powers-that-be decided they in fact wanted Joe back next year, they need to negotiate a contract with Joe. As has been pointed out here numerous times, it is not a question of firing him mid-contract. His current contract is up at the end of the month and, unless I’m missing something, doesn’t automatically renew. Yankees can’t unilaterally decide they want Joe back at this point — they have to agree with Joe Torre. They would look really stupid if they decided to negotiate through the media (imagine if they released a statement that said we want Joe back for 3 years at 3 mill/year; then Joe would issue a statement saying, I’ll do it for 4) or if they said we want Joe back and then Joe said no or they ultimately couldn’t reach an agreement.

What is really silly is that the Steinbrenner crew felt it necessary to issue a statement saying they weren’t going to make any statement today.

  42. Brayden

    (end of the day tomorrow)

  43. Lori

Annie – What makes you think there wasn’t an agenda? Pete published an article yesterday (I think it was yesterday) that set out the likely agenda. But like most corporations, they discuss the agenda items at the meeting. There is possibly a strong split in opinion here and they need time to work it out. OR, as I said in my previous post, maybe they want to talk to Torre and see what he wants, etc. before making an announcement. Ultimately the best announcement would be “we’ve reached a new contract with Torre for X years at y dollars” or “We’ve decided Joe shouldn’t be back and we’ve reached an agreement with Z person to be the new manager.” Until all of it is tied up and decided, why should they be telling us things piecemeal?

And if they have decided the managerial situation, we’d all be sitting here wondering well what about ARod? What about Mo? etc.

  44. The Central Scrutinizer

    what about this?

They extend Joe Torre for 2 years so he can close out the old and open the new Stadium. Mattingly gets 2 more years under his belt learning from Torre and takes over the helm in 2010. All the player’s, coach’s, politician’s, broadcaster’s, and fans now know for a fact that Joe is leaving (retiring) ahead of time ao there is no posturing win or lose 2 years from now! This gives everyone the respect they deserve and should make everyone happy! Now extend Mo and Po the same 2 years as Torre so they go out with him if they would like to at that time. Alex gets extended 5 yrs. 150 mil (30 a year) to help us in the new Stadium! Joe Torre Day after the ALL Star Break in 2010. Problem Solved!

    NOTHING BEATS OPTIMISM

  45. edgar

i’m thinking they keep delaying meetings because george isn’t always all there.

  46. murphydog

They are meeting at George’s house instead of the Tampa Office because it’s probably a lot more convenient for George. He seems shaky in public, so why make him go out and be practically perp walked into and out of the Tampa offices. Moreover, what better way to say “This is a family business” than to have the meeting at his house instead of the office?

  47. Rob

I can’t belive the impatience and flippant comments. Why don’t they just hastily stick to their guns and fire Joe even though there is no reason to expect better results? Do we need the beast fed that deesperately? I think it’s a good sign that they are not making any announcements in the heat of the moment. Joe Torre’s contract states that he will be a “consultant” for 6 years following the end of his Manager role. Whether this is a golden parachute or not, I think he should be included in these meetings along with Cashman, Michaels, Conner, the scouting staff and everyone else. I don’t particularly like Don Mattingly and I wonder why people would be willing to accept several years of a team managed by Mattingly that will not make the playoffs.

  48. Joey Meatball

What’s the rush ? There’s more issues to discuss than the manager. We’re talking about plans for a whole season and even more.

  49. Peggy

What is really silly is that the Steinbrenner crew felt it necessary to issue a statement saying they weren’t going to make any statement today.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It wasn’t just that. If so, that would be fair enough. But they said “no decision has been made”. After a week of talking among themselves and a meeting today, they STILL don’t know what they want? That front office is a mess.

  50. hmmm

“Basically this just proves that the yankees are being led by 2 guy who a month ago didnt want anything to do with the yankees and now the are making critical decisions. ”

actually, it doesn’t prove anything b/c no one here knows anything about what is going on.

  51. Deep to Left

The plans for “the whole season” have nothing to do with whether or not you bring back the manager. You don’t leave the guy hanging. You decide whether or not you’re bringing him back, you strike a deal with him, THEN you plan out your whole season. You don’t have to decide whether or not you’re going to make Vizcaino an offer before you decide on whether or not to bring back your manager.

  52. Sherri

I agree that Big Stein’s health could be playing into this equation.

  53. murphydog

I agree that this is not necessarily killing Joe. Part of me really thinks Joe wants to be free of this looney bin but can’t bring himself to walk away. He might really appreciate not be re-signed.

Hey Mr. T, if you are reading this… and I say this with all due respect and appreciation for all you’ve done for me as a fan… You’re healthy, you have a young daughter and your older kids and a nice wife. Spend time with these people before it’s too late. There is more to life than baseball. Now’s the perfect time to walk away. Do the TV commentator thing, play golf, travel and lecture, write some more baseball books, be a special Yankee advisor, get more involved in day-to-day things with your foundation.

Joe, you’ll never pay for dinner in NY again and you are going to the HOF. It’s OK to let it go.

  54. catya

If it’s “no “would it take this long to say He’s out? I think a deal is being worked out.2yrs 4mil a year, incentives for 2nd round and Ws berth and a big fat check for WS win.(hopeful)

  55. Doreen

    * What is really silly is that the Steinbrenner crew felt it necessary to issue a statement saying they weren’t going to make any statement today.

Given the amount of press searching for a meeting in Tampa, I don’t think it was silly, at all. Quite the contrary — it was necessary so that people wouldn’t camp outside Steinbrenner’s home all night.

  56. catya

When ,Torre comes back He will be very motivated. Look at the pitching he’ll have to work with.If only The yankees could rid themselves of (Juiced),Giambi.

  57. - - - -

“I can’t belive the impatience and flippant comments.”

I would bet many/most come from kids who have never had to attend business meetings.

  58. mel

    murphydog,

Anybody would want the charmed professional life that Joe has had. And it may be time to time to let go, but if you saw his post-game conference after the final game you saw that he really loves HIS guys. It might not be so easy to let go.

  59. migames

hmmmm…i agree, nothing is proven, we really are just reading tea leaves. But its always fun to speculate. The yankees have become larger than life. I know they have always been larger than life, but meeting for 4 hours in stienbrenners house makes me believe that the have gone all howard hughes larger than life on us

  60. Ravi

What a bunch of losers. Is this the way to treat the winningest coach of our times. I wish Joe would tell them to shove it and find a job elsewhere

  61. G. Love

All right, enough manager talk. Let’s heat up that Hot Stove.

Anyone here think Tampa Bay would take Ian Kennedy for Carl Crawford? Probably not straight up, but with Kennedy being the centerpiece?

I’d love to see Carl in the OF next season instead of Abreu. Figure out from Crawford, Melky and Damon who play were.

If Pettite comes back, we won’t have room for all the kid starting pitchers. Instead of getting another slugger, let’s get a speed guy who hits line drives and can steal 50.

And who here would trade Jeter to Detroit for Zumaya and Bonderman and put Arod at SS next season?

I know it’s blasphemy, but I was just wondering…I know, I know….thank God I”m not the Yankee GM.

  62. catya

The media can be like blood hounds at times, how crass.Go home already!Camping out Torre’s house,at Yankee stadium back at torre’s house,in tampa enough!!!!

  63. Doreen

    * I would bet many/most come from kids who have never had to attend business meetings.

Or run a corporation. Or make decisions involved millions of dollars. Maybe it’s not rocket science, but, clearly there is a need for discussion not just on whether to re-hire, but the alternatives if you don’t, and also, yeah, the money/contract thing.

Just because we want news and aren’t getting it as quickly as we want it, doesn’t mean that the Yankees organization is in disarray or that anything is “wrong.”

  64. PAT M.....

The only issue that Mattingly would need to grasp would be in regards to pitching…….I think Guidry will be replaced by Dave Eiland and maybe move Guidry to the bullpen or as a roving pitching instructor….That’s if he wouldn’t be insulted by the move…..Mattingly knows the game of baseball quite well…Plus he’s been around some former MGR. of the year ( Bowa, Pena & Kerrigan ?? )…..This is simply a question of timing and PR control…..Personally I think St. Joe will come back with a lower salary……Once the team has completed it’s trasition to youth, Mattingly comes on….2010 is my guess….

  65. Joe from Long Island

    Some thoughts”
    1. Of course George’s health is playing into this. If it wasn’t, Joe would have been canned by now, and George would be George. It’s a sign that time is marching on, and it’s now a committee decision. George makes his feelings known, I would bet, but is passing on large amounts of responsibility to his sons. As they are relatively new to the business, they are (rightfully) taking their time and gathering expert opinion from the “baseball people”. I don’t think is a bad way to go about it. So it takes some time, so what? Outside of fans’ frustrations, it doesn’t matter.

    2. Joe wants to come back, I bet. Why wouldn’t he? Even with a pay cut, he will make a lot of money, he doesn’t have to uproot his family, he knows the system, and he has a great chance to win. He’s dealt with the Yankees for 12 years, and George’s threats in the past. He knows he won’t be poor regardless of the decision.

    3. The players won’t be affected by these few days. Not in the least. As long as the dollars are there, they’ll adjust to whatever it is. They’re professional athletes. Change is a part of the gig.

Having said all that, I think it will be either Joe or Donnie. Decisions on the players, Mo, Jorge, Abreu, Molina, are all straightforward, I think. Alex is a bit more complicated, but they will want him, also. They just have to agree on a strategy to deal with Boras.

    It will work out.

  66. J-Dawg

I don’t believe that Torre is 100 percent in the dark. He probably has an idea of whether he will be back or not. It’s not easy to keep secrets these days, but the Yankees were able to keep the signing of Roger Clemens a secret before he made the announcement. Thinking about that convinces me that it’s possible for the Yankees to keep it a secret from everyone else about the status of Torre here. Just my opinion.

  67. mel

Okay, enough of crying in our (metaphoric) beer.

    Who wins tonight?

And how long before the trolls realize the blog’s back up?

  68. Joe from Long Island

Now let’s talk about something interesting – who would trade Wang for Santana? I know Minnesota may not want a sinkerballer for their stadium, turf – But what package would people put together for Santana? Or would you not trade now, but wait for free agency and just spend the money, without giving up a player?

  69. Lori

Mel – SHHHH! Hasn’t it been lovely here without them? Some true open discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of the Yankees and their managers, coaches and players – no name calling, etc. Enjoy it! But, I do think we’re missing some of our regulars. Wonder if Pete can email them to let them all know we’re back up and running.

Joe from L.I. – I agree with you 100%. Just look at the Page Six article on Jeter!

  70. mel

    Joe,

I was floored in one of the chats this week. The ESPN expert said he wouldn’t give up Wang for Santana. Wang is a cheap pitcher for years and Santana would be very $$$. I literally had to rub my eyes and pinch myself! Wang lost himself in the second half. I hope he he gets it back. That would be one drawback to losing Torre. Losing Gator could push Wang over the edge. ;)

  71. G. Love

Joe — I’d trade Wang for Santana in a heartbeat. It’s what else it would take to make that deal that scares me.

If it’s Wang and Kennedy (or one our promising minor league arms) for Johan, I do it.

If it’s Wang and one of Hughes/Joba/Cano I walk away from it.

We need young power pitchers to stay here and Hughes and Joba should be untouchable. I don’t trade Joba for anyone in baseball right now.

  72. mel

    Lori,

I know what you mean, but really the Red Sox is the ying to our yang (or the other way around?). Like it or not they’re a part of our identity and we’re part of theirs.

Cleveland and Boston are duking it out in the ALCS and Tampa meetings are a story?

Although, it was refreshing to see many analysts write stories about how Matsuzaka’s season was a failure. I thought they would try to whitewash it. After all he’s still good. But like Clemens, he didn’t deliver the goods.

  73. gregg from Harrison Joe's home town

I think that have decided to keep Joe. They might not have agreed on how much money and years and that could be taking the time. If they give him 1 year they can let him go early if the team start does not start out well next year like what they did with Yogi, Lemon, Martin and Dent. Joe should get a 2 year or a year with an option that has a buyout.

  74. Joe from Long Island

The salary issue with Wang is not insignificant, though not insurmountable for the Yankees. I can see the case for NOT trading Wang, for that reason – though he did fall off the latter half of the season, and I would have to consult the pitching coach, Joe, whomever, to find out the reason why and if it’s correctable (learn the curveball? control the slider better? Mechanics?).

IF Wang is felt to be correctable, then you can argue to not trade, and go for Santana as a FA. That would give you the potential rotation for 2009 as Santana, Wang, Joba, Hughes, Kennedy – not bad.

Not bad, but the risk you run with that strategy is Santana being traded to Boston, and giving them a leg-up on the FA signing. It would almost be better for the Yanks, if they don’t make a trade for him, for him to go to someone else where he could be “easy FA pickings” for us down the road. I wouldn’t even worry about Santana going to the Mets, because they don’t have what Minnesota would be looking for (pitching).

    Any thoughts?

  75. Doreen

    Mel, Lori –

I had a random thought today regarding the relationship between the Red Sox and the Yankees. I watched the Centerstage interview with Little Stevie Van Zandt the other night. He was talking about the difference between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Red Sox are the Rolling Stones to the Yankees’ Beatles. The Yankees are refined, professional; the Red Sox are more grunge rock, you know?

But I must say, the less I know about Jeter’s escapades, the better. :)

  76. Doreen

Who is going to trade for Santana without insisting upon a contract extension? It would be lunacy to trade for (meaning you give up quality players) Santana without a guarantee that he’s going to be with you for more than 1 year.

The decision whether or not to get into the mix with Santana hinges upon the asking price and who, ultimately, the Yankees are willing to give up. Cashman has said that building up the minor league pitching gives them options — to promote or to trade. Which ones are worth taking a risk trading? And the Twins are in the same league as the Yankees, though not the same division, and who the heck wants a Scott Kazmir type of thing to occur? Well, Santana’s a pretty good bet, but you know what I mean – Santana in his declining years, and someone like IPK just getting better and better (hypothetically, I mean). The difference between a pitcher arc-ing up and a pitcher arc-ing down, career-wise.

  77. PAT M.....

Carl Crawford for Ian Kennedy….Pitching is at a premium right now…..Go after Aaron Rowland…..I suspect that Mussina will have an inflated market value for some NL club this winter like the Phillies……Yanks at least know what Hughes, Kennedy & Joba are about by bringing them up this season….And to think there were many who critized Cashman for promoting up the Bigs…Now they know what they have ( as well as every GM ) and how they fit into their 08 plans…….Quite nice….

  78. mel

    Doreen,

Stevie Van Zandt from Sopranos? That’s a great analogy, and their class and professionalism is what makes the Yankees great.

LOL on Jeter, but I think that paying her parking was the least the young “lady” could do after a night that was probably priceless.

There will be a time, though, when Jeter goes from “cool” to “ewww”. He’s not getting any younger.

  79. mel

    Doreen,

I think it was the same analyst that said he wouldn’t do Wang for Santana for precisely that reason. Whover trades for Johan will have him for a very short time. He will definitely hit the open market.

  80. Frankie D.

In all probability the decision on Torre has been made and they’re waiting for the right time to announce it. If reports are true that Torre & family are headed for Tampa, they’ll digest things and go from there.

  81. Bob Michaels

Yankees will NEVER win another World series with Joe Torre as MGR. It`s time to move on.

  82. Jeter's Future Wife

I think the Yanks front office is smart to cool off after the “loss in the ALDS” and let the dust settle a bit. see what the players are doing, how they are reacting and talk sensibly about who, if anyone, can do a “BETTER” job than Torre has done. They need an outsider from another team to tell them that you shouldn’t take making the playoffs for granted and that if you don’t win a WS, you’re a loser. that’s ridiculous! Maybe they need to bring in someone from the CUBS to let them know all about that! Not that I’m suggesting that they do what the Cubs do, just saying that it’s not that easy just b/c you’re the Yankees, to make the playoffs every year, let alone with a Series.

  83. Doreen

    Mel –

Yes – “Sylvio” Steve Van Zandt from the Sopranos and of E Street Band fame. Now, he did not make the analogy between the Sox and Yankees, because, in this interview, he admitted that he has very little time for sports, except to generically “root for the home team.” It was a great show — quite different than the usual stuff with Michael Kay because Van Zandt is a true individual and doesn’t care about going against the grain. Watch it if you get an opportunity.

Yeah, once you get over that 35 or so age line, going with the very young ladies starts to be a little, well, not so great. And yes, the least a gentleman can do is pay for parking!!!! I don’t get the NY Post and the infamous page 6, so I have been able to live in bliss, a kind of fairy tale where I don’t have to know the sordid details. Then I found this blog, and well, my bubble has burst! Yes, I am naive. :)

    Bring in Mattingly already!!!

A little off the susbject…..LA sports radio is reporting that Kobe Bryant has cleaned out his locker as it appears that his Laker days are over……Maybe to the Knicks ?????

Gone are the days when Jetes used to parade around the Broome St. Bar with George in tow.
    No more hotties for George.

I wouldn’t say the Red Sox were the Rolling Stones to the Yankees being the Beatles…. More like the Sox are Aerosmith… cheap Stones rip off…:)

I think to many of you listen to Mike and the Mad Dog. Just because tose two knowitalls say this makes the Yankees look silly doesn’t make it so. How do we know that Torre doesn’t already know his fate? How do we know the Yankees aren’t giving him the opportunity to go out with dignity. i.e. resigning taking another position with the club etc… To call a group of businessmen who turned a 10 million dollar team into a 4 billion dollar asset, silly or stupid is just…silly and stupid…Why rush a decision that will impact the organization for years? There are a lot of things to ponder, like the sudden availibilty of Leo Mazzone, whom I would hire in a heartbeat, then place Eiland as BullPen coach and bring back the rest of the coaching staff sans Torre. hire Maz to be Bench coach and Donnie Baseball will have all the resources he needs around him to succeed. The doom and gloom after the loss to Cleveland was way to premature…How many teams in can you remember having three 22 year old arms like Joba,Hughes and Kennedy? Throw in the 5 studs recovering from Tommy John surgery and Horne,Ohlendorf,Robertson,Clippard,Marquez all ready for call-ups next season and the team will be making RedSox nation groan for years to come.

    Wow, Willis – you’re harsh! :)

Anyone who has been involved in Corporation Meetings at a high level knows that George and Company are not operating at a professional level.

How is it unprofessional? I would venture to say they are acting VERY professional.

Are the Yankees leaking anything to the media? Nope. Are anybody associated with the Yankees pimping their desired candidates to the media? Nope.

That would constitute unprofessional behavior. We are seeing none of that here.

Perhaps they should have done the following to appease some of you:

Fire Torre an hour after their ALDS loss because George, who is no longer running the Yankees (and hasn’t for the past two years, despite all the statements and bellowing to the contrary), said he didn’t THINK (which is what he said) they would re-hire him if they lost to the Indians.

The reasoning? George said it so, they have to do it.

Why hold meetings to talk about it? Just act off the cuff to appease people hungry for information.

They did what intelligent business people do in these situations. Let things settle down a bit, THEN hold meetings to discuss the future.

Nobody is being put out or compromised here. Especially Torre. He is still under contract to the Yankees until October 31.

Its a little more complicated than, “you either want him back or you don’t”.

What if there is a split within the organization about whether or not to bring him back?

What if there is a split in the organization as to what they want to pay Torre to bring him back?

What if there is a split in the organization as to how much longer they want Torre to manage IF they bring him back?

What if they believe Mattingly isn’t ready to manage yet?

What if the Steinbrenner brothers want to hear from all involved parties in the organization before deciding what to do with Torre?

What if they are discussing whether or not Torre’s presence will affect the signings of the present free agents on the team?

Today was the first day they had everybody in a decisionmaking capacity in the same room to discuss things.

Call me crazy but, its a helluva lot better (and more professional) to make decisions this way than to just do things at a whim, which this organization did for YEARS before 1992.

Whatever decision is reached, at least its safe to say they putting in a lot of thought and discussion about it. That’s all you can ask.

    Very good post, SJ44.
Just because the Yankees heirarchy hasn’t made any announcements to the info-hungry media does not mean that meaningful discussions haven’t taken place.

“Anyone who has been involved in Corporation Meetings at a high level knows that George and Company are not operating at a professional level.”

What in hell does THAT mean??? Have you been privy to the Yankee agenda???
