The meeting is underway!

Word from Tampa is that the assorted Yankee big shots have assembled at Legends Field.

You can just feel the tension crackling in the air. Well, probably not. But that sounds good.

Probably just a little gas. Just make a decision already so everyone can 2nd and 3rd guess it for the next 6 months.

Hopefully the Yanks make the right move. They should get Donnie the job already. The team is about to move into a new phase of Yankee history with the new stadium coming in 2009 and the youth movement. Time to get younger on the coaching staff.

I wonder if Steinbrenner is waiting on the World Series to make the announcement to make a splash? I know the commish puts a stop to announcing transactions during the WS to make sure the focus is there but if something were to “leak” during the WS,there would be nothing that Selig could do to stop it.

  4. jennifer October 17th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

I don’t want Donnie to take over. For all those who get ticked that Joe doesn’t argue, be prepared for Donnie to NEVER leave his seat. He has stated already that there is no need to argue since it won’t change anything!!

  5. Thomas October 17th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

Dark Smoke if a new pope(manager) is not decided yet. White Smoke if a new pope(manager) is elected. Am I rite?

  6. Stephen October 17th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

I don’t understand everyone’s correlation between a new stadium and Torre’s future. Should Jeter and Posada and Mo go too? Are the Twins letting Torii Hunter go because there’s a new stadium next year?

Why should a team make its personnel decisions based on moving across the street after next year? And would people feel the same way about moving on to a new phase if the Yanks had won the WS this year and next?

  7. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

good point, Stephen. I don’t get it either. Especially considering, if it backfires, it could have negative effects on the new stadium. Realistically, it’s not likely to impact much either way, they’ll sell out regardless.

let’s resolve the torre situation so the Arod circus can take center stage..alex and boras(money grubber) can do there circus routine and let’s see what moronic management go for there kabuki games…

Arod’s routine is old, the Yanks will thive without him and save a ton of $$$$$and much ridiculous drama…

No one worth a damn team wise will bid for him.. Arod can show w at many of us already know all he cares about is $$$$$$$ the rest is BS….

the Arod apologist will be out in force……..How can the Yanks survive without Arod????They will do fine in the long run…

    Jennifer,

That’s not what Donnie said. What Donnie said, and this was after that horrible call at second base in the Seattle game at the Stadium earlier in the season, was its not his team and it wouldn’t be right to do that at this time.

His belief was, what’s the point of carrying on, a direct contrast from Torre, when its not your team? By doing so, all you do is invite comparisions and controversy and the Yankees were at a low point of the season and he felt that would be the wrong thing to do.

If you ask me, that’s a pretty smart move by Donnie. It shows that he knows how the media works in NY and he wasn’t going to do anything to feed meat to the hungry lions.

I suspect if/when he is a manager, he will pick his spots and act accordingly.

Just wanted to point out that ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that even if Torre does come back, Guidry is probably out and the minor league pitching coach (Dave Eiland) that was working with phil, joba, and ian would be the likely replacement. Thought it was interesting cuz nobody has really been talking about that since the decision on Torre hasn’t come down yet. Was wondering what everybody thought.

  11. ryan October 17th, 2007 at 12:21 pm

    ESPN saying Guidry out

  12. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz stole my cheeseburger (aka Joe) October 17th, 2007 at 12:23 pm

George should right a wrong and re-hire Yogi Berra as Manager.

    That would be great!

  13. saucy October 17th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

    re: donnie not arguing

who knows how that arguement would have gone and it would look pretty bad to have a replacement manager get thrown out of a game…

  14. ItalianGreco October 17th, 2007 at 12:27 pm

Gator was a great pitcher, but not a good coach IMO.

  15. grafxkid October 17th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

I’m not an Arod apologist, but don’t people sometimes go where the “grass is greener?” Yes, I know, its not always greener on the other side. Some people even leave jobs and look for another because they are not happy. Or need/want a change. Sometimes they even feel they can’t move up, only lateral. Yeah, A-Rod makes about $40,000 per at bat, its pretty crazy to even think about…hopefully he’ll have the opportunity to make even more…whether it be in pinstripes or someplace else. I hope he stays. I really do. I also hope Torre stays for 2 yrs with a 3rd as an option. I’ll take Damon in LF. Leche in CF. Abreu in RF. Posada, Andy, Mo, Minky, Molina…but damn it, get rid of Farnesworth and Giambi. Keep Matsui in DH or trade him.

And for God’s sake…the Yankees better come to a conclusion on Torre by today. This is getting out of hand.

  16. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Yogi on golf, “80 percent of the balls that don’t reach the hole, don’t go in.”

  17. Paul V October 17th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

Much as I would like to retain A-Rod, I would only want him to stay via an extension that doesn’t put us in the hole as saps.

The Red Sox missed out on him and they have not done badly. We won 4 series in the last 12 years without A-Rod.

It would free up a lot of money for other people.

We shall see. This is the most interesting post season we have had in many years.

  18. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Hopefully all the 30-35 for ten years stuff is crap. Whether the guy projects to play that long or not, imagine if Ken Griffey Jr signed a deal that big for that long?

A-Rod will probably still play into his 40′s, but whether or not he’ll be worth the money he’s worth today remains to be seen. Hopefully he’ll take an extension amounting to a total of 6 more years from now at 30M or less. But who knows…… let’s just hope the 35M/10 year crap is just that, crap and boras hype.

  19. Stuck in Queens October 17th, 2007 at 1:15 pm

Under Guidry’s coaching, I was hoping to see Sean Henn perhaps snapping off one of those unhittable sliders.

    Still waiting…

  20. Bobcat October 17th, 2007 at 1:16 pm

    Jennifer,

Here is what Mattingly actually said:

“It’s part of the game, you have to accept it, bench coach (and interim manager) Don Mattingly said. “It’s the human part of the game.

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....m-yankees/

    You were correct, of course.

  21. Nick October 17th, 2007 at 1:23 pm

I am hoping they are in negotiation over a new contract and that’s why there’s no news yet. Today, they can announce Joe’s under contract for two more years at 5-6 mil per year, but it’s getting late in the day already. Let Donnie learn as a bench coach. In the meantime, we need Andy, Posada, and Mo. Definitely resign Molina. They’ve been looking for a quality backup for the last few years.

As for ARod, he needs the Yanks and the Yanks need him. He’s big money off the field. Yanks are pulling in so much money from the YES Network they are trying to hide it and he definitely helps pad the bottom line. Pick up Abreu’s option, and try and trade Melky / Ian Kennedy / + 1 for Santana and sign him to an extension. Then sign Rowand to play center field.

Pen needs work, but there are plenty in the minors to burn through and see if you can sign a Francisco Cordero or something on the market for set up (assuming he’s set up for Mo rather than close). It would be a shame to lose Kennedy, but to get the best pitcher in baseball, it’s worth it.

If you keep Melky, you have to unload Damon or Matsui and let Duncan / Giambi / Damon or Matsui rotate as DH with Duncan / Damon or Matsui rotating between DH and LF. You have to give Duncan some ABs to see what his worth is. If you plan on keeping him or trading him, they need to find out what he’s capable of. Mastsui bring in too much revenue from Japanese market to even think about unloading.

Unfortunately Giambi becomes a really expensive big bat off the bench with veteran presence. Think Cecil Fielder.

  22. Son of Irabu October 17th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

    Nick, re: trading Melky

My money says that if Melky is traded, he and Cano both fall apart. Watch.

  23. ryan loghry October 17th, 2007 at 2:08 pm

So has everyone written Joe Girardi off? I mean, is he completely out of the successor running? I hope they keep Torre myself. I’ve really appreciated the last 12 years. The clubhouse seemed calm and steady with Joe at the helm, unlike the years before.

  24. Nick October 17th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

Irabu, I thought about that also. But I see no other way to improve the starting pitching with this dreadful free agent class. Who else has the trade value and trade availability on the team? Easier to find a light hitting / good fielding CF than future #3 hitter 2B. Team lacks reliable pitching depth. Not comfortable going into next season with 2-3 rookies in the rotation either.

  25. Enoch October 17th, 2007 at 2:19 pm

For you people who are saying to just let ARod go, keep in mind that statistically us losing him, and the sox potentially getting him is about a ten game swing.

ARod is a must, unless we try to wrangle a M. Cabrerra, which will cost us prospects. ARod only costs money.

  26. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

The new “Big 3″ will be fine in the starting rotation next year. Hottest thing since Oakland’s big 3 dominated.

  27. Nick October 17th, 2007 at 2:26 pm

At the rate Cabrera is growing, he could probably fill the hole between SS and 3B. Doubles and SBs are down because it takes more energy to move all that weight. Better spending prospects on proven starting pitching. (Note to Yankee brass: proven is not equal to old or proven in the 90′s.)

  28. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 2:42 pm

why trade for a 3B when we have the ability to sign the best 3B/PLAYER in the game for free? No reason to give up either a volume of top prospects or current MLB players (or both) for a lesser 3B.

  29. G.R. October 17th, 2007 at 3:00 pm

    Jennifer,

My thoughts exactly concerning Donnie. I loved him as a player but he shows zero emotion on the bench. WHEN Torre is gone, I want someone with a little fire on the bench.

    Ryan,

I think that person should be Girardi!

  30. J. V. - Yonkers October 17th, 2007 at 3:19 pm

If in fact the rumors of a pitching coach change are true, it’s a clear sign that minds have been made up in Tampa and indicates that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner are ready to make decisions.

  31. NYY4Life October 17th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

    Bring back Joe!!!!
If not Joe Torre then bring Joe Girardi.
Donnie is too quiet and similar to Torre.
    The pitiching coach should Eiland.
No need to go after Mazzone because Eiland is very familiar with out young pitchers.

  32. PAT M..... October 17th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

All I ask for this off season is Aaron Rowland…A Gold Glove RH hitting CF……Any other issues can be solved internally…..Damon or Abreu, someone goes…..Abreu makes sense to me…..

  33. Wolf In Pinstripes October 17th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I read something online last night stating that there was a rumor that Damon had sold his apartment in NY. Let the speculation begin. LOL

J/K of course – he could have very well been selling his apartment (if he did indeed do so) with plans to buy a house. I’m just being sarcastic because I’m sure there are people that will latch on to that story and run with it until their legs fall off.

  34. Chris NY October 17th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Are Rowand’s offensive numbers any better than Melky’s? I dont think his arm is as good, nor is his age…
