Tick … tock … tick … tock

Peter Abraham
October
17

This just in from Tampa … they’re still meeting. Supreme Court justices have been confirmed quicker than this.

My theory is they’re setting up all the promotional days for next season …

April 1: Carl Pavano Day (all fans get $8 million then go home).

May 3: Derek Jeter Free Parking Day.

June 22: Kei Igawa Half-Price Tickets Day (Scranton only).

June 4: A-Rod Giant Piggybank giveaway.

June 22: All fans named “Melky” get in free.

Aug. 1: LoHud Yankees blog readers free beer night.

Aug. 22: John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman Bobbleheads to the first 10,000 fans in blue blazers or with Massachusetts accents.

Sept. 9: Roger Clemens Tough All Day Day (held in conjunction with his first start of the season).

Sept. 15: Diane Lane, Lucy Liu and Beyonce get to sit in the press box for free.

Sept. 30: Fan Appreciation Day. All fans get free team cap and Kyle Farnsworth is released before the playoffs start.

Wouldnt May 3rd be Derek Jeter Double Play day? You Park and your Friend can park free.

  2. Blackaccord

i’m surprised there is no Giambi Farewall day..

  3. migames

Carl Pavano coincides with Dr. James Andrews appreciation day

  4. andrew

August 1st sounds promising, hopefully they’re playing someone I’d like to see.

  5. Pink Yankees Hats Rule

Can we bring back Jaret Wright and Denny Neagle for some love as well?

  6. Stephen

You missed an important detail on the Sterling/Waldman night: it has to be a blue blazer with a handkerchief in the breast pocket.

  7. Christa

Very funny Pete, a good laugh is always appreciated!

  8. J-Dawg

John Sterling’s bobblehead needs to have a feature that allows it to talk. It would say, “it is high, it is far, it is…caught in medium right field!”

  9. alex

    These pretzels…are making me thirsty!!!

  10. 12345

how about some real news pete instead of these corny jokes.

  11. Ghost of Scooter

Sweet! I have Tickets for August 1 too! Sit me in my regular Upper 1 seat and bring on the free beer. $8.75 for a Becks is such a rip …

  12. Rick (Columbus)

How about Big Stein day. Every heads to the stadium but can’t remember why they are there.
I am going to hell for that one.

  13. DON

That Aug 1 promotion is the best idea I have herd yet.
When do the tickets go on sale?

  14. 12345

meetings over no news on torre as per 1050 espn radio

  15. Skippy

Is there a Joba with Bugs figurine day?

  16. JoeT YANKEES

oh August 1st I am SO there!

  17. Lori

Are the Yankees actually playing a game on August 1? Do your bosses know Pete?

  18. Ranting Guy

hey Pete, can we lobby the organization to make that free beer night a real giveaway?

No really … they must get SOME of their personnel moves from all us geniuses posting here, don’t you think?

And what do we get for it? We have to buy our own beer while we read the blog and watch the games on their very own YES Network!

For the price of just one Roger Clemens inning we could all go to a game and be candidates for liver transplants by the next day! Even at Yankee Stadium beer prices! I mean, REALLY! What else on God’s green earth do we have to do?

  19. #9

“May 3: Derek Jeter Free Parking Day.”

You forgot to add: “Applies to women only.”

  20. migames

meeting over. Cashman going back to NY.

    No decision yet

  21. Bada Bing

Update: Sweeny Murti on Mike and the Mad Dog said the meetings for the day just ended and Cash said no decision on the manager has been made yet.

  22. Yankees Chick

dont forget about Jim Fannin Appreciation Day… whatever he did to A-Rod seemed to work this year…

  23. jennifer

I’m missing what Sweeny said, office is too loud. What info does he have?

  24. This Year

Meeting in Tampa is over with “no decision yet” Cashman’s words will be broadcast on WFAN in a few minutes.

  25. www.jobathehutt.com

what about the day after reg season and before playoffs next year:

07 yanks vs. 98 yanks – for a tune up.

My bet is on 98, O’neil gapper in the 8th, head first slide into second, wraps arms around bag, crowd goes nuts.

  26. Rob L.

he has nothing. no decision on torre today. they are still negotiating.

  27. jennifer

They must be in talks with Joe than. If he were fired it would have happened already.

  28. Bob C

    Shouldn’t April 1st be free beer night ( April’s Fools day )

  29. Gayle

Basically said that Cashman came out the meetings are over he is going back to New York. No decision has been made about the manager and they are continuing to negotiate (not quite sure what that means) He also said that the Yankees will not be in the Arod sweepstakes if he opts out. So perhaps that was decided

  30. Clay Bellinger

Diane Lane? I think you can come up with someone better than that!!!!

  31. kd

Wouldn’t it be a shame if Pavano got another Major League deal?

  32. section 344

Sweeney reported that Cashman said again if arod opts out they wont negotatiate with him.

  33. Sara

Word is that Tampa Meetings are done and everyone is headed back to NY. They are in negotiations with the “manager” which they won’t say who it is. My guess is Torre..would anyone else negotiate? One unanimous decision did come out of the meetings…if A-Rod opts out the Yankees will absolutely not go after him.

  34. CGramazio

Very funny Pete, but I must insist on one more day…

April 25: Steinbrenner Calzone Day (Only Big George gets the calzone, but the whole stadium gets to smell it wafting through the stadiums ventilation system)

  35. migames

im thinking they are negotiating w torre.

  36. SJ44

Any Suzyn Waldman bobblehead has to have a mechanism that makes it start crying when you tap it on the head.

They must be negotiating a new deal, for less money, with Torre.

If he was gone, he would be gone. Its going to take more than a day or two to do a deal involving a paycut.

My guess is a 2 year deal for less money is on the table and they will spend the rest of the week trying to hammer out a deal.

  37. Drew

Hey, what’s with Farnsworth being there all year!

  38. Sara

they have to be negotiating with Torre, would any one else negotiate, anyone else would jump at the opportunity.

  39. dadofjft

Good call on August 1, Pete. That’s my birthday.

  40. migames

if they let torre go, wouldnt they have to atleast interview minorities?

  41. Bill

What the hell are they doing in those meetings? I could’ve figured out a new tax proposal in this time. Seriously this is getting stupid.

  42. #9

“Wouldn’t it be a shame if Pavano got another Major League deal?”

Shame? It would be downright criminal.

  43. saucy

    calzone day. nice!

  44. Bob

    This is beyond tedious.

Do they have to take breaks every 5 minutes to remind Steinbrenner what day it is and who he is?

  45. jennifer

Why do we have to wait until August 1st for free beer night? :(

  46. Fred

we need the equivalent of CSPAN for these meetings. the breaks would be great, randy levine attacking the buffet. i thought i was the only one sporting that “open jacket” look.

a bit of perspective, if a business person could even find a job with a $4MM guaranteed salary, it would take far more than ten days to close the deal. months. literally, an emotional cruxcifixion, and the indignity of being interviewed by a score of lackeys and sycophants. george’s blast is no loss of dignity for anyone but george, and at this point, is almost tragic.

more interesting is where they’re taking the team. i’d love to see a pro-forma with a-rod, rivera, abreu and posada backed out, with you guys slugged in their stead. run the numbers, and see how much of a hit attendance and ad sales can endure before you “lose money”. i bet those numbers would startled. you gotta sell a lot of tickets, hot dogs, beer, programs, shirts and ads for half a Billion dollars.

can’t blame boras for trying, but he’s kinda got it backwards. the network enables the team to pay the players, not the other way around. people will watch no matter what, always have, always will. if people watch the living in the past channels in kansas city and tampa, losing 60% of the time, “steve busby bobblehead night,” “all you can eat seats,” they’ll watch the yanks in a rebuilding year with a cadre of exciting prospects.

another angle – torre takes less, leads the way, can encourage others to “take less to be here.” savings pays his salary.

i’d like to know what they had for lunch, whether there was enough diet coke to go around, and who ate what.

  47. mel

It’s taking longer than expected, because while they have agreed on the length and price of contract, they are drafting the Bullpen Rules that will be in place on Opening Day.

Just kidding, we know that JoBA (Joe’s Bullpen Abuse) is grossly exagerrated.

This may not mean that Joe will be invited back. They would want to have someone lined up before letting Joe go. How embarrassing would that be if they couldn’t get anyone competent to come to New York? Just like Alabama’s coaching fiasco last year.

Either way, I’m psyched for next year. With or without Torre. With or without Alex. The umpire will yell “Play Ball” on Opening Day in the last season at Old Yankee Stadium.

  48. Fred

add keri hilson to the sept 15 guest list. yummmm.

  49. mommy

C’mon Pete. Ya gotta fit The Boss in there somewhere. And I DON’T MEAN Steiny! How about Bruce sings the national anthem on July 4th (The OTHER Boss’s b-day).

  50. Fred

add keri hilson to the sept 15 guest list. yum.

  51. Jimbo

Methinks a “Canoli Day” might be in order…

  52. Bill Torre

And everyday is Old Timers Day.

  53. Khoa

    bored, Pete?

  54. whozat

“Shame? It would be downright criminal.”

He will. A really cheap one year deal. Someone like the Rangers that are just desperate for starting pitching. Though, maybe he’ll only get a non-roster invite and have to pitch his way onto a team. Isn’t that what Ponson did this year with the Twins? It kinda rankles for the Yanks to pay 40 mil and not even get a mediocre prospect once he leaves, but…I can’t say that I’d want THEM to be the ones who give him an invite.

  55. Rebecca--Nothing beats Optimism!

Okay, so who’s coming with me on 1 August?

Even if it means missing my mother’s birthday, I am way so there!

  56. Designated Blogger

Forget calzones, how about a Robinson Cannoli Day? A free cannoli to fans wearing a Cano jersey.

  57. Sweet as Candy

There’s no way they’re going to have enough time to come up with all those. At the rate they’re going we’ll be lucky to have a scheduled opening day.

  58. Dee

Did Cashman actually use the word “negotiation”? or was that just sweeney paraphasing? I heard all Cash said was “No desisions has been made on Joe Torre. The discussions will continue”. There’s a big diff between more discussions or more negotiations. Negotiation would likely mean Joe’s coming back and they’re talking money. Discussion on the other hand would mean nothing new.

btw, Boss showing up at 1 and then the meeting ends at 4. That’s one leisurely work day at yankeeland.

  59. catya

    Pete,

No “because of my big fat contract, Arod bankrupts the Yankees,” Day t shirts ?
    Aug 1 bad I don’t drink beer.

  60. Sara

Robinson Cannoli day!!!!!! I LOVE IT!

  61. G. Love

This is the only way to save face at this point. They want Torre to take a pay cut and I think they are justified considering the discrepancy in manager salaries between him and the next guy. If he chooses to not do so (and I’m sure the Yankees are going to let him remain the highest paid manager even after the cut) then it looks like the Yankees didn’t kick him out like garbage. Getting 4 million to manage the Yankees is a gift in my opinion if that’s what they offer him. He’ll be lucky to get that from another franchise.

If he takes the pay cut, then it’s business as usual and Torre is back with Gator being the scapegoat. I would not at all be surprised that if Joe takes the paycut (which he’d be insane not to), he doesn’t get some kind of bonus attached if they win the world series, which I legitimately think they can in the next 2 years with the pitching staff they are going to have.

I don’t really think there’s much chance they are telling Joe to pack his bags on October 31st at this point since if they knew they were not going to negotiate a deal with him, they would have let him walk already and made that annoucement. He’s still under contract till the end of this month.

Of course there’s still the wild card that Joe refuses the pay cut and Donnie Ballgame is the next manager. I know Torre has a lot of pride, but even he has to know that 7.5 million is a bit ridiculous considering the next closest manaher is Lou Pinella who only gets 3.5 million.

If Joe gets a 2 year 8 million extension with possible bonuses if he wins the series, it’s a fair deal and he should take it.

  62. Guy Incognito

    mommy:

Bruce is dead to me since he performed in Fenway Park back in 2003 and called it a “rock ‘n roll exorcism” to end the Curse.

  63. Sweet as Candy

Those of you who are more excited by free beer than $8 million dollars should consider whether you have a problem.

  64. Rebecca--Nothing beats Optimism!

Designated Blogger: But don’t we save the canolis for Phil Rizzuto day? Or does everyone just go and get a free squirrel?

  65. NH Mike

Ha.. That reminds me of the Mets promotions back in the late 70’s early 80’s..
    Appliance week.
    Free car day.
    Free plane day.
    Free team day.

    Too bad nobody went.

  66. Ant928

Can we get a Ronan Tynan Fake Ears day?

  67. ...

    August 1st sounds excellent

  68. J-Dawg

Too bad that the meetings are over, I heard that the danishes and bagels were delicious and that the prune juice and grape juice were outstanding! But in all seriousness, it’s pretty clear at this point that all of the important issues have been solved. It appears that all of the Yankee brass knows who the manager is, it’s just a matter of finishing those negotiations and then making the announcement.

  69. whozat

“the yanks in a rebuilding year with a cadre of exciting prospects.”

The Yanks don’t HAVE a cadre of exciting prospects to replace Posada, ARod and Abreu. If you’re making Joba the heir to Mo in order to let _him_ leave, that means that Hughes and probably Kennedy are in the rotation, because I betcha Andy doesn’t come back if Joe, Jorge and Mo are gone. That means that any other younger pitchers we have (Clippard, Ohlendorf) we keep in order to provide depth. Now, we have nothing we can afford to trade, so we go into the season with Betemit as the 3B, Melky in RF, Johnny back in CF, and Molina (if he’ll re-sign) behind the plate.

    BOO.

Instead, bring ALL those guys back, our exciting young pitchers are still in the mix in MLB, and we can maybe afford to flip Clippard for pen help, or Kennedy for an elite AAA catcher, 1B or corner OFer, and all of a sudden we’re postseason contenders next season AND the future looks a bit brighter.

  70. Jax

They could be negotiating with Mattingly or Girardi. It’s not a given that it’s Torre.

  71. S.o.S.27

Again, for Mattingly’s agent to come out and say that stuff wasnt true that was written, could mean they are negotiating with his them. Also heard that Girardi was on fox and got nervous when asked if he would take Torre’s job. For all the sobbing that came after the playoffs and Cashman not going in public and backing Torre up. My money is on Donny.

  72. saucy

    thought the same thing, jax.

  73. Ranting Guy

Rebecca – What kind of daughter are you??? If your mom’s birthday’s the same day as free beer day at he stadium, you should bring her!

  74. J-Dawg

They’ve been in Tampa for so long, they could be negotiating with Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon for all we know, but I kinda doubt that. :)

  75. Designated Blogger

    Rebecca,

OK, a free cannoli for anyone wearing a Cano jersey, a Rizzuto jersey, or a squirrel around their neck.

  76. Andrea

And this is why I read this blog.

  77. Ruby

“May 3: Derek Jeter Free Parking Day.”

hahaha nice, but you need to add that this only applies to women, and only if they come in pairs.

  78. #9

I picture Steinbrenner in these meetings kind of the way we see Brando’s Don Corleone character in the last couple of scenes of The GodFather…

  79. catya

    #9

    Hahahaha

  80. Nicole

“Derek Jeter Free Parking Day” haha well played my friend

  81. Wolf In Pinstripes

Let me get this straight, Pete. If they didn’t have the promotional day for Diane, Lucy, and Beyonce, you would let them be _charged_ to sit in the booth? Hell, I’d tell them to take it out of my paycheck! Good choices though, my friend. :)

  82. edgar

free parking day. that was brilliant.

  83. #9

“Aug. 22: John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman Bobbleheads to the first 10,000 fans in blue blazers or with Massachusetts accents.”

I would think they would give out free hams on that night.

  84. Cheesyhoboe

I didn’t laugh until the “Farnsworth gets released” part, which admittedly gave me a chuckle.

  85. nettles

Wouldn’t they announce that they weren’t resigning Torre if they were in negotiations with someone else?

Kinda leads me to believe they are talking with Joe.

Funny stuff, Pete! Between, this and the Sox being on the brink of elimination, a lot to smile about today! :)
