Announcement is imminent

Peter Abraham
October
18

The Yankees have scheduled a conference call with the media at 4 p.m.

UPDATE, 3:45 p.m.: As soon as I can, I will give you the news here. I’m also going to try and tape the call and post that later on.

No word yet as to who will be on the call. But presumably at least Brian Cashman and Joe Torre.

  1. Matt

Looks like Joe is coming back, :) . is there anywhere we can view this conference live?

  2. Bob Michaels

    Arggh-Arrgh_no #27 in 08.

  3. Andrea

    I’m tingly with anticipation.

  4. Lori

Can you blog the conference call like you do games Pete?

  5. Andrea

I think Mike and the Mad Dog were saying they’d play it on their show. You can listen to their show online.

  6. ROY

“I would like to announce that Joe Torre Is here. Thank you.”

  7. The D train

The Torre announcement will take a ton of shine off tonight’s ALCS game.

  8. The Count of Montefusco

Very disappointed. I love Joe, but I’m very disappointed.

I was looking forward to new, fiery manager to helm this younger club next year.

  9. Rebecca--Colbert For President!

ESPN has said they will air conference.

  10. J-Dawg

Meet the new manager, same as the old manager.

  11. Andrew

Wow, don’t you just love the stranglehold the Yankees have on all of baseball? Hilarious.

  12. Scott

Torre will be back for 2008 with a team option for 2009.

  13. Jeff

No more Torre. I want a championship with Girardi leading thw way!

  14. jennifer

Joe already on his way back to NY.

Wfan can’t broadcast the call live. :(

  15. Andrea

I take it back. No conference call on Mike and the Mad Dog.

  16. Lori

Mike and the Mad Dog say they can’t carry it live but word is one year with a pay cut.

  17. YankeesLuv

Alright if it’s for just one more year that’s fine. Hopefully there’s a paycut also, no way he’s worth 7 million, who gave him that deal in the first place. Twice as much as any other manager in baseball? One more year and then bring in Donnie I guess to open up the new stadium. I’m kinda sick of this whole thing, just get it over with. Sign Jorge, Mariano, and Arod already. I never minded Torre coming back that much but all this poor Joe business is silly, George gave him the best players paid him a fortune.

  18. Andrea

Just a question–why is everyone so gung ho on Don Mattingly? He’s just Joe, Jr..

    I’m just curious.

  19. #9

Joe will have to take a pay cut but will get all the free Biegilow tea he wants for life.

  20. YankeesLuv

I want Torre to toughen up alittle, he’s gotten too comfortable, stop drinking that green tea and look awake. I don’t expect a world series every year but atleast get out of the first round every couple of years. One more year, sighs oh well I guess it’s alright. I was kinda looking forward to a fresh voice.

  21. gregg from Harrison Joe's home town

The Yankees did the right thing. He should not have been put through this and does not deserve a pay cut. Business as usual Yankee fans for next year. How many days until spring training?

  22. BrianinDC

Can you give us the call-in info, Peter?

  23. No Morre Torre

If Torre comes back, the 2008 Yanks are not winning the World Series and this nonsense will repeat next offseason.

Also, it will be the Yanks saying they care more about keeping up appearances than winning cuz Torre is a loser. That’s right, a three-times fired loser lucky enough to have the Yankees owner want him as Yankee manager. Torre napped 1998-2000. The guy never had competitive adversity in those three seasons then once he did (2001 on) crumbled like the
fraud he is. Showalter could’ve managed not only all four World Series championships, but would’ve won either the 2001 or 2003 World Series if not both and one more. He was a true tactitian and just as much a part of rebuilding the Yanks 1992-96 as Gene Michael, Bob Watson et.al. were. He got the shaft.

B.t.w. guess who rebuilt the Arizona Diamondbacks into a team who defeated the Yankees in the World Series? BUCK SHOWALTER.

Excuse me while I either jump for joy that Torre is gone or feel nauseated for THE REAL YANKEE FANS if he stays.

  24. YankeesLuv

I’m not 100% sure about Mattingly but the Yankees seemed set on him being the next manager whenever Joe finally leaves.

  25. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

Anybody know what channel ESPN will have it on? If it is ESPNNews, then I am stuck because I dont get that channel.

  26. jennifer

Can Mike get off the issue about the “pay cut”. We don’t even know if it is true. He is like a hammer.

  27. Peter Abraham

Somebody just posted how disappointed they were that Torre was back and it would be “business as usual.”

Right. In case you missed it, here’s the list of longest active streaks for making the playoffs:

    Yankees: 13
    7 other teams: 1

Making the playoff is not a given, people.

  28. Mark

If they cut his pay, I’m surprised. I figured the team would look at his signing as a means of saving costs of re-upping Mo and Posada.

I’m also not sure about Mattingly being the heir apparent given his lack of experience. I love the Don but maybe he needs a year or two in Pittsburgh or Florida to ready him.

  29. GreenTeaSucks

Did it take so long due to the fact Joe was making it a requirement that they bring back Vizcaino so he has an another arm to destroy? He didn’t quite get the job done last year, he’s back to finish him off. Feed me your relievers!

  30. Rebecca--Colbert For President!

Thanks Pete. At least someone makes sense of it :)

And it should be on ESPN in two minutes.

  31. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

    testing…

  32. Lori

The only potential disappointment here is that there an “option” for 2009. That means we go through this same nonsense next year. Maybe Joe insisted a date certain for the decision to be made: I’d love for him to have a clause that says “A decision on the option shall be made 30 days after the last 2008 game in which the Yankees play” – and a penalty clause for early disclosure of their decision.

  33. Ranting Guy

    Torre in?
    Guidry out?
    Eiland in?
    No Mazzone?
    Shelly’s pops as hitting coach?
Mattingly and/or Girardi in there anywhere?
    Let us know …

More importantly, will Terry Franocona bench Manny Ramirez for his “there’s always next year” approach, even though “there’s always next year” really WAS the Red Sox mantra for 86 straight years? Tell him there won’t be a next year then trade or release him? At least scold him for the HR posing?

Assuming he’s being asked to return, it’d be interesting to see how much the core players w/ an option to return (Mo, Posada, Pettitte) and maybe even A-Rod influenced the decision on Torre.

  34. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

Schaap just reported Joe will get a 1 year contract with another year option.

  35. Lori

    It’s 4pm . . . Do you know who your manager is??

  36. Dan from Mass

hey this is fun – espnnews it’s live. i didn’t want torre back, but i’m glad he’s back. interesting time for the yankees, management-wise.

  37. Bob

FYI Ranting Guy, Shelly’s Pop is a pitching coach.

  38. Gerry

please post the result here ASAP.. someone.. anyone

  39. RM

What is the big deal about a pay cut. Its reasonable to think that if he managed somewhere else that other team wasnt going to pay him twice what the highest paid manager is making.

  40. saucy

    [[jeopardy music]]

  41. Gayle

    guess what he said no

  42. Rob

Joe Turned it down? Oh My!

  43. Gayle

breakikng news he passed on the offer

  44. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

    ….wait. WHAT?!?!

  45. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

    Joe is out as manager!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. #9

Wonder if Tony Soprano will get whacked?!

    Ooops – sorry wrong blog…

  47. ryan

    Torre turned them down?

  48. Dan from Mass

    WHOA!

  49. jennifer

Whoa, Joe turned it down. He is not our manager.

  50. J-Dawg

    He said NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

I dont believe it. Now the Yanks look like fools. Unbelievable

  52. jennifer

Oh damn. Who is our manager now? What happens to Mo? What happens to Jorge? :(

  53. Matt

    HE DECLINED IT , WHAT!!!!!!!!

  54. Inferno

    wow.

  55. A Tampa Yankee in King George's Court

We should have gotten rid of him under our own terms.

  56. andrew 33

If this is true, and the Fan is reporting it, this does look terrible – what the hell – I had no problem with them waiting but this looks minor leaugeish. Pete do you know what happened ?

  57. Gayle

the deal was 1 year deal with 5 million base
1 million if they made it to alds
1million if they made it to alce
    1 million to world series
    for a total of 8

then the 2nd year would automatically kick in at 8 million

    he said no

  58. ...

    Torre haters:

whether you like it or not… the fate of the Yankees lies heavily in him coming back.

Posada and Rivera have known really no other manager in the past 10-12 years.

The players have his back… and two of the best are free agents and want Torre back…

As many decisions as I disagreed with.. the Yankees doing badly in the first rounds of playoffs is not his fault – but he takes the fall.

Cashman and friends have to see if firing him really is better for the team..

  59. Rob

    I can NOT believe this!!!

  60. The D train

    Gregg :

Get your calendar out. Pitchers and catchers report on February 15.

  61. sunny615

    Mattingly is our manager now

and with Joe turning down an offer, Mo and Po will make whatever deals they feel necessary since Joe left on his terms not let go by the Yankees.

  62. LGV

    Unbelievable.

  63. Matt

Well guys you really can’t blame Joe, all the stress and hype thats over that position. It seems like his job is always in jeporady and he isn’t treated very well and this is kinda Joe’s revenge to get back at them , I was hoping he would be back but you really can’t blame Joe for declining the offer.

  64. B.stanley

    Holy moses.

  65. Andrea

The Yankees don’t look like fools. I kind of had a feeling Joe would turn them down.

I wonder if we’ll hear Pete!

  66. GreenTeaSucks

I was right, Luis Vizcaino is not coming back! That’s why Torre didn’t want to return.

  67. Andrea

I think there’s a better chance of Mo and Posada, and even Pettitte, coming back since Joe turned the Yankees down and it wasn’t the Yankees giving Joe the old F you.

  68. CountryClub

The yanks made a fair offer. I’m sorry to see Joe go, but there’s no reason why managers cant have incentive laden contracts.

  69. sunny615

I think it was more the option year than the money… I doubt he wants to go through this again next year too. I wouldn’t.

  70. Rob

This is PATHETIC to see all of this going down in a cloud of egos and pettiness on BOTH SIDES. We fans deserve better than this. Shame on all of them. I support Joe – but he is BY FAR the highest paid manager in baseball with all the prestige of the city and the team and he has always taken a little indignity with grace as part of the job. The owners had to express their displeasure. Could they really offer the same salary and maintain the status quo? I don’t think it was a disrespectful offer – but it was clearly a well considered slight. What a disgrace all around.

  71. LGV

I am a big time Torre fan but it was a fair offer.

  72. mary ellen

    This sucks!

  73. Marty Bluke

Torre’s salary ($7 million) was by far the highest in baseball this past year. I think that the $5 million the Yankees offered would still have made him the highest paid manager in baseball even without any of the options (which could have got him up to $8 million). It seems to me to be a fair offer and I don’t blame the Yankees.

  74. sunny615

Again, I think it was the option part of the contract. Dealing with this crap next year is probably not too enticing.

  75. TKinDC

I am shocked he didn’t take it, but at least the Yanks can say to Posada, Mo, et al that they made a big-time offer (although a tricked-up one).

I thought Joe loved the job so much that he would take this kind of offer, color me wrong!

  76. Marty Bluke

I don’t see why the option should bother him. Manage next year and let the chips fly.

  77. The Count of Montefusco

The notion that this makes the Yankees look bad is ridiculous. The way this has panned out significantly lessens the pressure on the next manager and makes for a better environment all the way around. The Tampa group comes out of this with their hands relatively clean, having made a generous offer, AND they get to kick off a new era the way I suspect Cashman and the baseball people wanted to.

    We’ll miss you, Joe.

The King is dead. Long live the King!

    YANKEES 2008!!! LET’S DO THIS!!!
