The notion that this makes the Yankees look bad is ridiculous. The way this has panned out significantly lessens the pressure on the next manager and makes for a better environment all the way around. The Tampa group comes out of this with their hands relatively clean, having made a generous offer, AND they get to kick off a new era the way I suspect Cashman and the baseball people wanted to.

We'll miss you, Joe.

The King is dead. Long live the King!

YANKEES 2008!!! LET'S DO THIS!!!

I don't see why the option should bother him. Manage next year and let the chips fly.

I am shocked he didn't take it, but at least the Yanks can say to Posada, Mo, et al that they made a big-time offer (although a tricked-up one).

I thought Joe loved the job so much that he would take this kind of offer, color me wrong!

Again, I think it was the option part of the contract. Dealing with this crap next year is probably not too enticing.

Torre's salary ($7 million) was by far the highest in baseball this past year. I think that the $5 million the Yankees offered would still have made him the highest paid manager in baseball even without any of the options (which could have got him up to $8 million). It seems to me to be a fair offer and I don't blame the Yankees.

This is PATHETIC to see all of this going down in a cloud of egos and pettiness on BOTH SIDES. We fans deserve better than this. Shame on all of them. I support Joe - but he is BY FAR the highest paid manager in baseball with all the prestige of the city and the team and he has always taken a little indignity with grace as part of the job. The owners had to express their displeasure. Could they really offer the same salary and maintain the status quo? I don't think it was a disrespectful offer - but it was clearly a well considered slight. What a disgrace all around.

I think it was more the option year than the money... I doubt he wants to go through this again next year too. I wouldn't.
