When we last saw Don Mattingly, he was standing in the middle of the clubhouse demanding that Joe Torre be treated with respect.
The Yankees left Torre dangling for 10 days then made him a take-it-or-leave-it offer that they knew he would refuse.
Through his agent, Mattingly declined comment tonight out of respect for Torre. You have to wonder what he thinks of the way his old boss was treated.
There are only 30 managerial jobs and certainly only one Yankees. So I would guess Mattingly hides whatever anger he feels and tries to get the job. But wouldn’t it be something if he said he wasn’t interested and went back to his horse farm in Indiana?
Meanwhile just spoke to somebody I know who is tight with Mariano Rivera. He said that Mo is more determined than ever to test the market after the developments of today.
Mo’s comment: “The Yankees are one of 30 teams now.”
