Torre press conference will be tomorrow

Here’s Joe Torre returning to his home in Westchester. There were a mob of reporters and photographers at his house.

He will hold a press conference tomorrow at the Hilton in Rye, N.Y.

Don’t be surprised if he manages again. He’ll be a prime candidate with the Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers or another large-market team if they want to make a change next season. If Dusty Baker is worth $3.3 million to the Reds, Joe will have his pick of jobs.

  1. Mr. Faded Glory

The Mets and Minaya just gave Willie a vote of confidence and said he’d be back next year. Scratch them off your list. Besides, if they did turn around and fire Randolph, do you think Torre would stab his old friend in the back like that?

  2. Motown Yankee Fan

Wow, do I feel sad. I really wanted him to come back. I have a feeling Joe will handle this really well so that the Yankees don’t look so awful as an organization. Otherwise, forget it, no Pettitte, etc. I think the Yankees may have really miscalculated here.

    We’ll miss you Joe.

  3. #9

Would not be surprised if Torre ends up managing the Toronto Blue Jays. Lots of potential, in terms of talent, there.

  4. Yankees Chick

well judging from that picture, at least the press conference took place in front of a set on a disneyland ride circa 1957…

  5. GreenTeaSucks

Nice murse. Enjoy the large pay raise.

  6. Dr. Acula

Look at Joe’s left hand – is that a folded edition of the Journal News ?

    Me thinks so!

  7. Reflaxion

Nobody else is going to offer him $5 million (potentially $8 million) to manage a team.

So he was offered a pay cut. So what? When he started, he managed the Yankees to four championships in five years. In the following three years, the Yanks made the World Series twice and lost them both. The three after that have all been first-round exits.

When a player’s stats go down, does the team pay him more because of how he performed ten years ago?

The Mets and the Sox aren’t giving up their managers. Torre’s not going to spur a sudden bidding war from this.

I’m just curious as to who the prime candidate is.

  8. Global Warming

    It’s a European carryall!

And no, it obviously wasn’t about the money. You’d have to have blinders on to not realize that.

I bet Torre retires/ takes a job-other-than-manager- with another team.

  9. jennifer

Joe G was very coy when asked if he was contracted. He said he wasn’t. (but that doesn’t mean his agent wasn’t) When asked if he would like it, he said who wouldn’t? I believe he is the front runner for the job.

off topic, they just had matt holiday on. He looks like a cone head. He really should have put a hat on.

  10. Billy

This is a sad day for NY Baseball…...
    BALLGAME OVER –
    SEASON OVER –
    NY YANKEE PRIDE OVER –

Godspeed Joe, you deserved better then this…....

  11. jennifer

Who are the suprising canidates for the job?

  12. Jeff

Trey Hillman might very well get this job.

Just heard Girardi on FOX. The guy wants to replace Torre, make it happen!

  13. jennifer

    I vote for Joe G!!!

  14. Sherri

Jennifer – I was so thinking the same thing about Matt Holliday!! I was trying to find a picture of him without his hat on to send to a friend of mine. I never realized he was such a conehead!!

  15. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

I used to live a few minutes away from Joe Torre. That area must be a mob scene tonight.

It’s actually named the Rye Town Hilton.

  16. Summer

No one’s going to offer him $5+ million to manage. Good for him if he gets it, but I doubt he will.

  17. Dr. Acula

Just think what you’ll be missing (sniffle)

You won’t have Joe’s bullpen mismanagement to kick around anymore (dissolves nto a puddle of tears).

  18. Sherri

He’s 67 years old….might he want to retire, maybe do some tv appearances? I don’t know.

  19. Tim

To say I’m shocked is an understatement. I own my own biz. and I raise my prices every year. Pay cut my arse! Joe, we will miss you. I wish you and the Yankees can make a resolution. You two are a perfrct fit..

Thanks Hal and Hank! I would swear at you, but I’m not allowed..Pricks.

  20. Ravi

What a bunch of worthless owners, who ignored the majority of their fans, and treated Joe bad, especially with the incentive clause. This is a coach who won so may championships and did so much to Yankee baseball.Yankees have a lost a fan and I am not interested in this team anymore and let us boycott this ownership and this lousy management, which includes Cashman.

  21. 2008 Yankees - The Yankees will be GREAT

For all of you who will miss him, there are just as many who will not. He ABUSED the bullpen year after year after year until their arms gave out. I enjoyed Torre and wish him the best but the organization needs somebody who will care for those young lions we have seen.

Good luck Joe….thanks for all the memories

  22. YouDontKnowJack

Everybody has forgotten about clueless Joe. But lets not forget the Yankees made Joe Torre, not the other way around. Also Pete get a grip. Your percentages argument = BS. Highest paid is highest paid. PERIOD.

  23. Brendon

I can’t picture Joe with another team. Plus everyones talking about the Yankees loosing players. Well the thing I can’t get out of my mind is a a-rod mike lowell swap. its scary

  24. SJ44

If the Yankees are smart, they better not lowball Mo and Jorge with their initial offers. If they do, I could see those guys walking, regardless of their histories with the team.

Right now, the best way the Yankees can win the PR war is to aggressively sign Mo, Jorge and Arod, as soon as they can.

If they sign the players, that takes the focus off this decision. If they lowball those guys, and they walk, then its hell to pay.

Something tells me the Yankees know this and will offer these guys a ton of money to stay. If they do, I believe they will stay, regardless of today’s developments.

  25. Dr. Acula

    jennifer-

matt holiday.. looks like a cone head.

    Jen, you’re so superficial. LOL!

  26. Billy

Just wondering, who the hell is this slug Randy Levine anyway???? Just looking at him makes my skin crawl…...what a slime ball. We are in BIG trouble if this is the the new voice of the bombers…Stick save us!!!!!!

GO TO HELL LEVINE THAT IS WHERE YOU BELONG

  27. jennifer

UGH I hate Kevin Youkalos. He is so disgusting looking. :X

  28. Brendon

who i would want to be manager, in order.
    Don Mattingly
Trey Hillman (search him) he sounds like the real deal
    Joe Girardi
    Tony Larusa
    Bobby Valentine

    what do you guys think?

  29. scarletknight64

    Well said, Pete, well said.

He should have been given an offer he can live with or told they were going in a different direction.

Now you really cant even tell who is calling these shots but I sure hope Randy Levine doesnt inherit any power of the baseball operation. He should just concentrate on whatever business role he’s been given and get out of the baseball part.

It looks like Hank and Hal have a lot of growing up to do. This was badly handled.

  30. PAT M.....

So this is the new generation of the Steinbrenner reign of terror….Geez, remember when players didn’t want to play here because of the Front Office ( Owner )B.S…..Well one has to wonder what kind of message this sends out…...Yeah, maybe it was time to close out the Great Torre era, however it certainly should have been handled far better than this…I really thought it would have been a process of transition over the next two years….But this calculated & cunning take or leave it is an embaressment to all Professional Pride that had become the Yanks during the Torre Administration…...I once again feel bad for Cashman, for he was the messenger and it’s just not his style…..Is it true that if they win the Championship in 08, an option to manage in 09 would have kicked in ???? Yankee Pride , at least Torre practiced what he preached…..

  31. Billy

    DIE RANDY LEVINE DIE

  32. jennifer

    Dr. Acula Well doesn’t he?

  33. SJ44

I may be in the minority but, I don’t see the Yankees fading into oblivion because Joe Torre is not managing the team.

That’s not a knock on Torre but, let’s face it, its still the New York Yankees. They have money, with more to come from the new stadium, talent, the best young pitching in the game, etc.

Its not like they are going to cease to exist now.

I know some of you are young enough to only know Joe Torre as manager of the team and a move like this is a shock to your systems.

However, for some of us older fans, we have seen this happen before and the team still did well.

If you look back at the history of the team, in numerous cases, the Yankees won the year after a managerial change.

I doubt it will revert back to musical managers. I also don’t think the team is destined for failure because of this move.

Until I see a mass exodus of players because of the managerial change, I am not buying that line of thinking one bit.

For the players, its about the money. If they are made great offers, they stay. If not, they will go.

  34. Brendon

    haha billy completely agree.

  35. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

I used to live a few minutes away from Joe Torre. That area must be a mob scene tonight.

  36. jennifer

  37. Joe M

I’m tired of hearing (it could have been handled better) What is wrong as to how they handled it. they took there time, made him an offer an he turned it down. so be it an move on

  38. Rob NY

This move was bush league and there isnt any other way around it. So he can’t handle young players? Are you kidding me? He’s managed this team since they were babies in the game and slapping him in the face with this nonvitation back is going to piss off the guys you dont need pissed off… mo jorge and pettite are gunna think twice about coming back to a place that cleary doesnt care about the people side of this. Better send the money truck to panama fully loaded if you want your closer next year… disrespected mo when he asked to talk in spring training and disrespected joe here… welcome to the new era…

  39. Eugene in Michigan

Apparently ESPN Gamecast Chat, Torre is flying back to Tampa right now!?

  40. jennifer

Wow the Soxs are kicking the ball all over the field.

First Manny throws his helmet off trying to make it home, he is thrown out by a good 10 feet.

Now a ball dropped between him the 3rd baseman, ss and they kicked the ball away. :)

  41. Dr. Acula

Look for a surprise, outta-da-box hiring: Bill Parcells.

he’s a winner, and he can handle the NYC media.

  42. We Miss Paulie

Personally, I’d hate to see a re-tread manager, e.g,. LaRussa, Girardi or Valentine. Find some fresh thinking…Trey Hillman is intriguing, don’t know much about him, but maybe there is someone we haven’t even heard of. Where did Eric Wedge come from?

  43. Go Tampa Bay

only a 2-hitter by Beckett so far
Is there a greater postseason pitcher than Beckett.

  44. Matt Waters

Strange. If a certain contingent of the front office wanted Torre gone, which is obvious by today’s machinations, than they should have taken advantage of the situation presented by last season’s playoff loss. The Yankees were heavily favored, summarily destroyed, and Torre managed one of the worst playoff series in baseball history. From the bizarre game 4 lineup, to inexplicably batting A-Rod sixth, for the first time all season, in game one of the playoffs [good confidence boost] Torre was flat brutal in the ‘06 Division Series. If Randy Levine and others wanted a change, that was the time. This just looks weak. The case just isn’t strong. And while the team turning around had more to do with the stabilization of the rotation, and the awakening of Abreu and Cano [factors not really involving Torre] the man deserved credit for keeping the team together when yes, they did look dead. I was there, I remember.

So all and all… this was a truly baffling exhibition by the Yankee hierarchy. If they didn’t want Joe back, period, just fire the guy. Show some guts.

People really should stop freaking out, however. Once March rolls around, and Joba, Phil, and Ian begin their bullpen sessions, this anger and indignation will melt away.

Until then, remember the good times.

  45. Eugene in Michigan

Did anybody ELSE see the ESPN update that Torre is flying back to Tampa!?

  46. Lynn

Joe may take a year off and go to the TV booth then,in 2009, go to Atlanta to manage the Braves

  47. Go Tampa Bay (Rockies world champs 2007, Devil Rays world champs 2008, Yankees world champs 2015)

and Beckett gets out of it – as usual. What a clutch performance

  48. Joe from Long Island

    SJ44 is absolutely right.

I remember when Buck Showalter left (very messy, with George’s feigned concern about Buck’s “little family”); Yogi Berra being fired 16 games into the 1985 season (after being told he had the job for the year); Casey Stengel being fired in 1960. And from what I’ve read, Joe McCarthy’s leaving in what, 1945? was ugly, too. He even went to manage Boston afterwards.

Departures are often messy (I don’t think Jim Tracy has too many kind words for the Pirates, nor Grady Little for the Red Sox). In NY, the biggest stage, they are on very public display.

We need to re-sign the important players – Mo, Posada, Pettitte, A-Rod – get a new manager, and move on. The new crew for 2008 – Joba, Hughes, Kennedy – will make it a very interesting, and hopefully good, year.

  49. Dr. Acula

I’d hate to see a re-tread manager, e.g,. LaRussa, Girardi or Valentine. Find some fresh thinking

    How ‘bout Lindsey Lohan

  50. PAT M.....

SJ44, The first thing that came to mind was the firing of Yogi in 64, and for those of us who were Yankee fans back then all know how that turned out…..That team also had a wealth of young pitchers as well…..Stotelmeyer, Bouton, Downing…..It just sends out a very tarnished image of what the new Yankee ownership is all about…..

  51. Lil' Jimmy Norden

Joe let ego get in the way. He got a fair offer.

    Bring on Joe Girardi!

  52. Matthew Cohen

I bet Torre says it was time for me and the organization to move on.

    Time for new blood.

All good things must come to an end.

    etc.

Pete – step up and script the conference call.

btw – I was married at the Rye Town Hilton.

  53. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

“I remember when Buck Showalter left (very messy, with George’s feigned concern about Buck’s “little familyâ€?); Yogi Berra being fired 16 games into the 1985 season (after being told he had the job for the year); Casey Stengel being fired in 1960. I think the Yankees will be fine. I still feel that they handled this horribly, though.

  54. Pauly One

Joe Torre will have his pick of jobs, and the Yankees’ new brass will have their choice on who to pick to lead this new era. I for one think it will be a good one, thanks to the belief in the farm system, and the future of thse current youngsters on the roster.

  55. Brendon

Well where did Eric Wedge come from…i truly don’t know but I agree lets get a new guy I don’t want an other guy like LaRussa I’d rather have someone like Mattingly but Hillman is very interesting. I think that he is a great canidate, he is a mix of the army general girardi is and the laid back guy mattingly is. like a mix-match. i like him.

  56. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

“btw – I was married at the Rye Town Hilton”.

I consumated my marriage at the Rye Town Hilton. LOL

  57. Brendon

whats this thing about joe torre flying back to flordia??

  58. trevor

Is anyone else feeling absolutey sad and horrible looking at this picture. Torre will never manage another game for us. It is definatley time to move on but this is tough. I am just trying to imagine someone else managing the yankees. Torre is the only yankee manager I ever knew.

  59. Dr. Acula

Did anybody ELSE see the ESPN update that Torre is flying back to Tampa!

maybe the airline lost his luggage.

  60. Dr. Acula

I consumated my marriage at the Rye Town Hilton. LOL

can you post the video 8)

  61. Brendon

clearly he didn’t loose his luggage, hes holding it in the picture above.

  62. Eugene in Michigan

I’m praying to my Yankees cap that George is having a change of heart and realizing he’s letting a great one get away.

    Fire Randy Levine, not Torre.

  63. gargoyle

The process was not handled well but in the end the outcome was the best for the team.

  64. Billy

PLEASE GOD LET RANDY LEVINE GET CANCER!!!!!BETTER YET>>>>AIDS>>>>

  65. Billy

RANDY LEVINE GET CANCER AND DIE

  66. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

    “can you post the video”

    I didn’t marry Tonya Harding.

  67. Dr. Acula

    Brendon-

    that’s his carry-on

he obviously was playing Madden 08 on PSP, while chill’n out with some Kanye

  68. Billy

    RANDY LEVINE = SLIME

  69. Dave K

I have very mixed feelings. For the past few years I’ve felt the Yankees were ready for a new manager. Torre is great if not the best at dealing with the media and by all accounts at dealing with clashing personalities, egos, etc. I just can’t stand the way he manages the bullpen sometimes (example of course being the stat SJ44 always throws up there about Viz being in the games up by 4 so many times) – If that doesn’t happen, maybe he isn’t so gassed come playoff time. Then there is also Sturtze, Proctor, and probably Joba if there were no rules that were overused.

Despite this, I do feel bad for the guy and I do worry a bit about the future. The thing is I really want to see Pettitte back this year and I think he is the type of guy that could walk away because of this. Posada and Rivera too – who knows this could have turned them off and maybe money isn’t everything to them.

The next few days will determine a lot. I hope they make VERY generous offers to keep these 3 in pinstripes for the rest of their careers as they are and should be Yankees for their entire career (minus Pettitte’s years with Houston)

  70. J-Dawg

The fans at Jacobs Field may be chanting “Kenny! Kenny!” when Lofton is up, but I don’t think that they chant that when he comes back to Yankee Stadium!

  71. Dave K

Another one up by the head and Beckett better get ejected Joba style

  72. Billy

LEVINE IS SLIME – New 2008 Yankee Slogan

  73. Dave K

Anyone else enjoy watching the games more without that stupid TBS arrow showing the 9 ft. marker, etc.?

  74. Brendon

want randy levine fired? heres a petition i found

    http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/firelevine

  75. Matt Schweber

It’s been a long time since I’ve written these words.

But today for the first time in almost twenty years I’m embarassed to be a Yankees fan.

    Sickened, Outraged, Appalled, Disgusted.

The organization’s smallness, the cowardice, the vindictiveness, the insolence, the contempt their three-day charade displayed for our intelligence.

The little men that run my beloved Yankees team—and I include Brian Cashman now among them—nauseate me.

I urge all of you, if you haven’t already, to read Verducci’s sentiments

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/tom_verducci/10/18/torre/index.html

  76. Jeff NJ

ESPN had that up by mistake, Torre is not headed back to Tampa. I just read Verducci’s article on Si.Com. It is a nasty indictment of the new Yankee leadership dominated by Randy Levine. This guy is a total a-hole, but he won his war with Torre. Yes the Yankees on the field will recover, but how out of touch is Levine and the others to think that the 1 year low ball offer that Joe had to refuse makes it look like the parting is Joe’s fault?

I’m afraid Levine makes the Yankees look like the Knicks or the Bush administration. They think the public is stupid and doesn’t require honesty, just spin. It is a really sad day for Yankee fans.

  77. Kelli

Get over it Billy, nothing will change because of your rants. Time for your milk & cookies.

  78. Eric Young

Joe Torre’s winning percentage managing the highest payroll in MLB: .605 (1173 – 767)

Joe Torre’s winning percentage managing the highest payroll in MLB: .471 (894 – 1003)

Sorry, Joe. You lost me at Goodbye.

  79. Eric Young

    Ooops…

Joe Torre’s winning percentage managing the highest payroll in MLB: .605 (1173 – 767)

Joe Torre’s winning percentage managing the Atlanta, the Mets, and St. Louis: .471 (894 – 1003)

  80. 2008 Yankees - The Yankees will be GREAT

    Hey Billy:

How about knocking off the Levine stuff…nobody cares about him anyway.

  81. Chris

Joe Torre wasn’t a good manager before he got here. I doubt he will be one in the future now at 68.

He was good with the Yankees, but would be exposed anywhere else. No team is going to offer him $7 million a year next year. No GM wants an old “Clueless Joe” who is use to having a $200 million dollar payroll worth of talent.

  82. Brendon

wow, thanks jeff that article was a great read. levine looks like a coward, auctually he is.

  83. Dr. Acula

    Clay-

digya ever hear how Bobby Abreu’s fiancé, a former Miss Universe, was caught on video “stepping out” of their engagement on the reality show “Cheaters”

you can find the clip (the “action” is vanilla, but nevertheless funny) via the first google link here

Being multilingual has it’s benefits ;)

  84. Vinny

In looking over Cot’s Baseball blog, numerous players have incentive laden contracts. There’s no legitimate reason why a manager can’t have one.

  85. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop, and David Ortiz ate my hamburger (aka Joe)

“I’m afraid Levine makes the Yankees look like the Knicks or the Bush administration. They think the public is stupid and doesn’t require honesty, just spin.”

I agree with the above post, but after reading some of the other posts apparently Levine is right about the stupidity of the public. Some people actually believe that the Yankees made a good offer to Torre.

  86. John in Ohio

I remember being unhappy when Joe replaced Buck.

For those not happy about the first round playoff knockouts, Trey Hillman does not appear to be your man…

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/Trey_Hillman

  87. murphydog

    Billy:

Randy Levine is a former deputy mayor to Rudy Giuliani. He was hired originally I would imagine for his ability to work with the big players in City Government and Politics. As you might imagine, none of Rudy’s Deputy Mayors were soft, gentle beings.

I was surprised that he led the conference call. Maybe he’s moving up in the organization but I think that will only last until the Steinbrenner boys figure out who they want as President. Cashman’s got to be thinking about how much longer he’s going to be around too if there was any retreat on his autonomy in baseball matters at these meetings. That will be interesting to watch.

  88. murphydog

Hey, the Yanks made a lucrative offer to Torre. Not necessarily a fair one or a good one. “Fair” and/or “good” are subjective, individual things. But lucrative, no doubt.
Even if I were to concede that the offer was fair and good, however, Torre still had every right to turn it down for any reason at all, or for no reason. Just think of it as Torre “opting out.”

So life goes on at Castle Grayskull, with Randy “Skeletor” Levine out front for now, doing his best Al Haig (“I’m in charge”) impression. It is interesting to wonder, however, whether Rudy had any input (phone calls?) with Levine regarding his friend Joe.

  89. Ernie

This is a blessing…Joe Torre had no business surviving the collapse of 2004, and since then he’s done nothing of note. There are a minimum of 10 games this season where his inability to manage a bullpen have resulted directly in a loss. Do the math, 10 games is a Division championship.

He has systematically blown out good arms, Luis Vizcaino was the most recent victim of “Torre Arm.” Does anyone think that the notorious “Joba Rules” were put in place for any other reason than Torre killing his arm?
Finally, the braintrust has made the decision to change the face of the organization, and it starts with Joe. Next, it’s Dave Eiland for Gator.

The only question I have is why has Larry Bowa’s name not come up in any managerial discussions? He has had a winning career as a manager, the only major failure was with the “B.S.” Padres back in the 80’s. The young corp of youth and excitement could potentially be sparked by the fire that Bowa wears on his sleeve. Should he fail, he would make the transition to Girardi, or Mattingly that much easier.

I’ll be on my feet for Joe Torre Day at the stadium, he’s did a great job. It’s time to move on…
