Torre press conference at 2 p.m.

At some point this afternoon, I’ll post the audio from the Joe Torre press conference. Not sure when that will be.

The press conference is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. ESPN is planning to cover it live from what I understand and I’m sure other stations will be as well.

wow newsflash Scott Boras thinks pay cuts are not doable in pro sports. really… shocking..

I make about 50% of what I use make, but guess what I need to work so I do it.. I live in the real world, you writers live in a dreamland….

I am sure Boras did not have his clients best interest in mind when he made his statements….Boras cares about 1 thing at that is CASH…

Talk about mistreatment’ torre pai ooodles of money for 12 years. his results were very good but below what they were early on for the last 4 yrs or so, the yanks offer him a 33% pay cut but still guarantee his salary is 25% or more higher then any other manager and they are mistreating there manager..

Yes bafoons like Rany Levine did not want to Torre back but were to cowardley to just say that so they low balled him(relative term). and they yankee organization is just a bunch of meanies………..

now we have the steve phillips(moron) and Torres boys(every beat writer in Ny) and 1/2 the so called baseball national writers outraged..they are outraged becuase steinny is a bully and torre is class, but that should not change the point that Torre was not treated pooorly and 12 yrs. is just long enough to work for an organization that has unrealisti goals.

Should Torre have a lifetime contract with a clause stating he’s the highest paid manager in MLB (by a minimum percentage of 60%) year in and year out?

Buck had this team in the playoffs in 95 (and they had the best record in the AL in 94). He and stick sowed the seeds for the dynasty and Cashman was present through all of it.

Everyone knows Levine is lame, but let’s wait to cast judgment on Hank/Hal….I know how tough that can be for the 24/7 PeteAbe blog-fueled media nowadays.

PS-Didn’t Theo Epstein turn down a contract and walk out of Fenway in a Gorilla suit? Few months later he was dancing a jig with Papelbon on the mound at Fenway.

Torre could be back….but is that necessarily a good thing at this point? Lets be real…he won 4 titles with almost an entirely different roster (and got a ton of credit), but he’s 4-13 in the postseason over his last 17. Does that not at least warrent consideration for change?!

Maybe this could have been done with more Torre-like class…but business rarely is. If it translates to wins…it’ll all be fine. Torre will make his millions elsewhere…but I doubt it will be much more than the $5m he was offered to do it here.

    Obviously, Joe Torre’s conference will put another spin on the matter, but if Buster Olney’s article is correct (see below), (1) Torre knew which way the winds were blowing and what type of offer he was going to get;

    (2) He wasn’t ABSOLUTELY, DEAD SET against what he was hearing.

Any idea if it will be online, streaming live? I’m stuck in my !@#$% office with lousy radio reception.

Is YES going to be carrying it? I assume they will since they stream Fatso and Fruitloops then. But they have blocked out their show before when they had Cablevision people on. YES should carry it.

Pete – Thanks for all of your info. I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say on the matter after the conference. I’ll be your glad it’s happening in your own backyard.

    Well said Bronx Bomber.

Randy Levine won’t even be with the Yankees a year from now. Once the Steinbrenner brothers get their legs under him in the organization, he will be whacked.

He was the designated hatchet man yesterday. Everyone who has ever had any contact with the Yankees knows Levine is a jerk and the only reason why he is with the Yankees is because of a deal between George and Guiliani.

They needed an inside political guy to get the stadium deal (and some other things) done and Rudy pushed Levine onto George. Levine had burned so many bridges in the Guiliani administration, he had to go. He landed with the Yankees and was able to get the stadium deal done.

I doubt Hank and Hal will have much use for him once they are comfortable with the day to day business of running the Yankees.

Levine hated Torre, everybody knows that, and he was probably was the first guy to raise his hand and volunteer to be the hatchet guy. Its what he does. He’s a lowlife.

Unless his last name is really Steinbrenner and not Levine, I don’t see his stay in power with the Yankees lasting much longer.

The reality is, the marriage between Torre and the Yankees was over. Torre knew it, which is why he spoke in the past tense at his PC after Game 4, and the Yankees knew it.

Sure, this was a lame PR stunt. However, the relationship had run its course.

Torre had a great 12 year run with the Yankees. He wasn’t “disrespected” or “mistreated” or any of that other nonsense.

As he has always said, “You take the money, you take the @#$%”.

This is how the Yankees do business. If you want to do business with them, you know that going in.

Joe Torre handled this the only way he could handle it and he leaves with his dignity in tact and a great legacy.

The Yankees now have to make the right move and go forward.

Nothing in pro sports lasts forever. Its amazing, given the history of the Yankees, Joe lasted as long as he did.

In case you guys missed it, here are some reactions:

“With what he’s accomplished, I think that he should manage as long as he wants to manage,” Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge said. “I know there’s a business side of it, but from what I understand, for him to look at that [contract] and say no, good for him. You know what? He’s earned and deserves to do whatever the hell he wants to do.”

“I guess I hope that however it came down – and nobody knows but Joe and whoever he was dealing with – I hope Joe is happy,” Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “I think he deserves the respect. And I think you’re going to hear people in baseball, every area of baseball, say probably very, very kind, respectful things about Joe. … And they’re all deserved. I just hope he’s happy.”

I have to say, that I completely agree with Derek Jeter’s silence thus far. We all know that he has had a close relationship with Joe Torre. However, Jeter is the captain of the NY Yankees, not the captain of whatever team Torre is managing. DJ has to be on the team next year with whoever the new manager is. It wouldn’t be good for the captain to begin the year by divinding the team or for that matter, uniting against the new manager

Will Joe be awake for the press conference?

  15. ams223 October 19th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

pete what are your thoughts on torre possibly landing a front office job with the yanks, even taking Levines spot ? Or becoming the eventual commish of baseball?

  16. jon October 19th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Torre’s job could be as the Yankees’ “ego coordinator.”

That was his biggest strength (and I’m not implying that it’s not a valuable trait).

But anyone can manage in-game. And I definitely don’t want Torre in any talent-evaluation position.

The fact is, it’s basically impossible to evaluate any manager’s in-game tactical ability, because the sample size of situations with multiple viable options is very small.

Where did this piece of cr$%ap Randy Levine come from? And how much longer will I have to listen to this BUM. Just remind me, he did what for the Yanks?
