Tony Pena, one of the three known candidates to replace Joe Torre, has a lot of support.

Will the next manager be the next Phil Bengston or Gene Bartow? It’s not easy being the man to follow The Man. Also, do the Yankees have enough to get Johan Santana?

——————-

Barring some big news, this will be the extent of blogging today. I need some time away from the laptop. So play nice. Or better yet, head outside and enjoy some fall. Go Pats, squish those Fish.

Pete I would love Pena can I also ask would the vets love him or hate him , I think they would love him but what do you think Pete Ab. ?

QUOTE: “This is unexpected because I didn’t think Joe would be going anywhere,” Pena said yesterday. “But if they want to talk to me, I want to talk to them.” UNQUOTE

The perfect response. Mattingly’s agent should take note. Other than the divorce trial thing (TMI BTW) Pena sounds like a very good fit.

  3. CATYA

Who ever it is I sure hope they have a plan and hit the ground running.

Looks like Bowa is leaving as I thought!

Sure hope Melky is not being traded.Wang is too timid for NY
let him go!I don’t believe Wang’s arm was too strong in the division series, seemed like nerves ar work.

  6. CATYA

Sorry for rhe double post computer has a mind of its own sometimes. Also meant nerves at work.

  7. CATYA

This isn’t happening again, meant to say “the “double post.I hope this goes through.Crazy me

  8. Nate

Here’s to hoping Santana doesn’t sign a deal with any team he’s (possibly) dealt to and hits the market in after 08. With Moose and Pettitte off the books, the Yanks could feature a rotation of him and Hughes and Kennedy.

  9. Don

Pete, do you really think it would be a good idea to trade Melky and Hughes for Santana?

  10. Clean House

    A-Rod let go ($81M cleared)

Abreu bought out and let go ($13M cleared).

Damon and $19.6M (60%) of his remaining $26M traded ($9.4M cleared).

Matsui put on and claimed off waivers ($26M cleared).

Giambi released with the money cleared from Matsui gone absorbing the eaten $26M ($26M eaten deducted from the above money cleared).

    Total money cleared:

    $81M + 13M + 9.4M + 26M = $129.4M – 26M releasing Giambi =
    $103.4M!!!

You are absolutely crazy if you think these five will help the Yanks win it all. They will not. It isn’t unreasonable to say that Abreu, Damon, Matsui, and Giambi won’t do worse than they did this year in ‘08 and Giambi was just awful.
Better to spend the money cleared letting go of A-Rod on a whole new bullpen with or without Rivera.

From there you rebuild the starting nine with the farm system foundation of Jeter, Cano, Cabrera, and a re-signed Posada as follows:

Trade for Lance Berkman to be the 1B.

Make Betemit the #9-hitting switch-hitting DH with Duncan getting some at-bats there.

Sign Milton Bradley to play LF for a year and $4M (what he made this year), Mike Cameron to play RF for a year and $6M
(what he made this year), and Joe Crede to play 3B for a year and $7M. Crede will most likely be nontendered by Chicago. Total cost of these 2008-only commitments:
$17M, only $1M more than what Abreu would’ve cost in 2008
and $4M more than what the Yanks cleared buying out Abreu.
The Yanks would basically have these three for a year and only $4M ($17M – 13M cleared getting rid of Abreu.)

For those who scoff at Bradley, he has a world of talent and could be a gem of a find if he could get his head on straight. I don’t think he will fuck up on the biggest stage in pro sports history esp. with Don Mattingly as manager cuz if he does, he’s done in M.L.B. This isn’t Montreal, Cleveland, Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego. He’ll have good guy friend and teammate on S.D. Cameron with him (they could room together). As for Cameron, he posted 21 HR and 78 RBI this year. If he had modest increases in those numbers for ‘08 -say 25 HR and 88 RBI, his defense will make up for the 13 less RBI he drives in vs. 2007 Abreu (101 RBI).

2008 Yanks batting order/ starting nine:

    JETER SS R

Upgrade from Damon at leadoff. Jeter could better his 2007.

    CANO 2B L

    I think he’ll better his 2007.

    BRADLEY RF S

Upgrade from Matsui or Damon in LF and Abreu in the #3 slot.
He can hit for power, average, get on base, etc.

    BERKMAN 1B L

Upgrade from the 2007 Yanks 1B. Maybe he’ll be a cleanup hitter who drives in more than one run in a postseason series unlike postseason chokeartist A-Rod.

    POSADA C S

He should at least post similar power numbers as his 2007 ones (20 HR & 85 RBI) and bat at least .290 since he hit .338 this year.

    CREDE 3B R

Downgrade from A-Rod but a better rotation bullpen, bench, RF, LF, 1B, DH, and leadoff hitter plus Crede’s own defense at 3B and power numbers will make up for it. If he posts somewhere between 2005 and 2006 Mike Lowell with solid defense, I’m thrilled. The archetypal #6 hitter.

    CABRERA CF S

I think he’ll be even better than he was in 2007.

    CAMERON RF R

I’m cool with 25 HR and 80 RBI from him in the #8 slot.

    BETEMIT DH S

I think this 25-year old guy could post at least 25 HR and 80 RBI given a full season to play. Or the Yanks could platoon him and Duncan, make Duncan the DH, or make Juan Miranda the DH. They could battle it out.

    Bench:

Molina and Mientkiewicz re-signed, Duncan, veteran utility guy like Tony Graffanino if not him

The only older guys are Posada, Jeter, Berkman, and Cameron,
but the former three can still definitely hit with the best of them. I could see Cameron being a problem offensively. Big deal -the Yanks could get a bat. If no one’s getting it done at DH, just move Berkman there and start Mientkiewicz at 1B and the #9 slot.

He says management _really_ wanted Torre back, but Joe also had to be punished for recent results. More necks may also be on the Yankee chopping block.

He says the fans and the media have a wrong taken the parting, failing to appreciate management’s effort and perspective, and for rejuvenate Torre’s career in 1996.

Here are the choice quotes on ARod, the Tampa meeeting, and the coaching derby:

    1. “Obviously, we’d love to keep [ARod], but if he opts out, goodbye.”

    2. Torre rejected the deal and walked out after he realized it was a _take it or leave it offer._ Cashman raced after him in a final bid to change his mind.

    3. “If there’s a front-runner [for manager], it’s barely a front-runner.” (Donnie – Gulp!)

    4. Cashman has been actively negotiating deals with Mo and Jorge.

    hahahhahahahahahha!

  18. Andrea

Catya: where does it say that Bowa is gone? In Pete’s article it just says that he has an option to go to Seattle. Which he does.

Not being a pitbull or a troll, so if that’s how you’re taking it, I apologize. Just curious if you read something we didn’t see.

  19. Tommy

    Mornin.
Agreed that following Torre is difficult. Just cannot get comfortable comparing it to following Wooden or Lombardi.
Wooden’s teams put College Hoops on the map. Lombardi was an enormous figure in the history of Pro Football. To me, the Yankees themselves, as well as MLB, easily transcend Joe in a historical context.

I’d like to see Pena get a shot. Why not? Would it kill the Yanks to put a qualified person of color out there to “lead” the organization.

I’d love to have Santana. Rather sign him as a FA. Wang and MElky? maybe. I would not trade Wang and another pitcher for him though. I know many fans disagree, due to the love of hard throwers, but I would keep IPK over Hughes.

  20. Jonathan

there is NO way i trade hughes, kennedy, or joba in ANY PACKAGE for santana. I think all three pitchers will be better than wang. Wang and melkey? in a new york minute! do not break up the big 3 cashmoney. Keep phil, joba and ian together.

  21. Tommy

As much as I disagree with Schilling’s views, I gotta admit the guy has got some stones as a pitcher.

BTW, did anyone else here his profanity on the ESPN postgame? Peter? HE used the S word referring to the stuff JD went through this season.
Espn basically laughed off the new pattern of Boston SPs cussing on their show.
Is this becoming the norm on TV?
There is no Boston pitcher I’ve wanted the Yanks to crush more than Schilling through the years.
That said, his postgame remarks about the home fans were some of the most thoughtful, repectful comments you’ll hear.
Some present Yanks might take note.

    Dr. Acula:

Those Yankees sure watch a lot of movies when they are on the road, eh? (Chick Flix? Action? Family Films?) And boy, am I impressed by A-Rod. Talk about an MVP. He watched FOUR movies in one night. Wow. Four Westerns probably.

    (Crap, how embarrassing!)

  25. randy l

    hey murphydog-
remember the good old days last spring when we were wondering who the hell marty miller was. this is truly a historic yankee mess. even though someone didn’t die, the last time i felt like this about the yankees was when thurman munson died. there’s a clear loss in the organization. i think the reason i was so down on cashman in the spring was that i was getting strong vibes of yankee mismanagement at the top. having swindall busted for picking up hookers in the sleazy side of st pete showed the team was in bad hands. my anger was misdireted at cashman because the problem was higher up. the yankee have never really recovered with things coming to a head with the torre firing and the torre press conference.
cashman is now a victim himself having to walk on eggshells. one wrong move and he loses arod, posada, or rivera. he’s next in line to be the fall guy.
i said in the spring that there wouldn’t be enough time in the day for cashman to take care of torre, arod, posada, rivera, pettitte etc.
with boras announcing that arod is watching to see who the manager is and whether posada and rivera will be on board will affect his decision, cashman is in deep doo doo. if he gets out of this with all these players on board, i’ll be singing his praises. it’s gonna take a miracle to sign all of them.
of course, nice little three year contracts for jorge and mo at a much lower rate in the spring would have solved most of the problem. arod would have had a much clearer view to make his choice.
personally i’m expecting the worse because the steinbrenners say things like “if arod opts out, goodbye”.
that’s the kind of “negotiating” they did with torre. that kind of intractability is not going to fly in this baseball climate with the boras’s of the world.

  26. pat

The Yanks need to get a smart PR person to sit this whole group down and tell them to shut up. Hank Steinbrenner’s comments, justified or not, has now kept the story alive another day. They need to focus on moving forward because revisiting the past is doing nothing to help them.

Most companies don’t pay incidentals for business travel. Not to mention most businessmen make lots less than all these guys. So they charged them back. No Big deal. The bill totals don’t shock me at all (outside of a $400 per day rental car). A few hundred dollars for room service over a 3 or 4 day Baltimore series in a 4 star hotel isn’t that tough to do. I once had a $32 room service breakfast that would have cost $6 at a diner.

  27. Patch

    The best quote:

“The Yankees are united on Alex Rodriguez, he said, but they won’t offer him a new contract should the slugging third baseman opt out of his current deal. “Obviously, we’d love to keep him,” said Steinbrenner. “But if he opts out, goodbye.” ”

good to hear, hopefully they stick by their guns and A-Rod gets punished if he opt’s out.

  28. Tom (Eastchester)

    Pete,

We finally get young people to root for and some fans want to trade them. Give me a break!

  29. pat

I’d like to see Bowa stay. If one of the 3 mentioned gets the managers job, I don’t see who they would want to replace him with. Bowa said yesterday Pena is one of his closest friends. I would think he would want to keep Bowa. If it’s Mattingly or Girardi, I would think they would want to surround them with the most experienced guys they could find.

  30. Jim Clark

Certainly the replacements for Lombardi and Wooden didn’t do very well. But UCLA and Green Bay were winning bunches of championships when tose coaches voluntarily stepped aside. Wooden stayed permanently retired, after a year year Lombardi went to Washington because he missed coaching AND he could get a piece of the franchise he couldn’t in Green Bay (about what you expect from a coach who deounced running back Jim Taylor who moved as a free agent in 1967).
There are a number of teams that were running in place when they replaced a great coach and started winning championships again. Giants in early 30s with McGraw retiring and naming Bill Terry. Oakland had Madden retire in 1979 and Tom Flores won two championships (there was plenty of talk at the time Madden was leaving because he knew the team was about to slip). Tom Lasorda taking over from Walter Alston in running the Dodgers in 1976. Casey Stengel replacing the “popular with players” Bucky Harris in 1949 and Houk replacing Stengel in 1961 when Stengel got
too nasty to young players, too in love with his complex strategy and too praised by writers (players got sick of reading stories about Uncle Robby and Zack Wheat in 1916 when the Yankees won a game 7-2). Bill Parcells has said “My ‘act’ doesn’t work after 4 years” to explain his habit of leaving teams. Was there ANYONE who thought in 1995 that replacing Showalter with Torre was a good idea that would restore greatness to the Yankees? Not me, I thought at best Torre would repeat his Atlanta years: one first, two seconds, no world series.
Historically Steinbrenner has shown a good eye for picking young talent to start as managers: Dick Howser, Lou Piniella, Buck Showalter and hiring retreads that can win championships: Martin, Lemon and Torre. In his 35 years his six championships equal the amount won by his six “big market rivals.
    Dodgers 2
    Mets 1
    Angels 1
    Red Sox 1
    White Sox 1
    Cubs 0

Among his NYC rivals only the Islanders in the 1980s
(steady tandem of Torrey and Arbour) and the Devils (Lamariello with a whole bunch of coaches. Imagine that) can rival him.

  31. murphydog

    randy1:

I’m feeling a bit uneasy too, but I gotta wait until a little more dust settles. Their next couple of moves will tell the tale.

They have to put a team on the field next year and with the young arms they will field a credible team, if not a division winning team. They will get a new manager and some new coaches. They will either sign Mo, Po and A-Rod, (and convince Pettitte to return) or they won’t. Here, money talks and maybe saves the day. Po is arguably the most important piece, maybe even more important than Mo, since Po is an everyday player (almost) and is the rock of the pitching staff.

If the pitching improves and reduces runs allowed, then they can afford to do without some of A-Rod’s runs, maybe soften the blow of losing him. That’s why I’m not sure I would rule out a trade for Santana, either as insurance against losing A-Rod or as creating some leverage for the Yankees against Boras. If they can retain A-Rod and add Santana, well, then lookout – - here we come. That would more than justify giving up Melky and Wang plus a prospect in my mind. They would have to become a more balanced team without A-Rod – not a bad thing. Better balance on offense, instead of relying on the three run, walk-off HR helps ward off cold spells like they had against Cleveland this year and Detroit last year.

We have to hope panic does not set in and they stay Cashman’s course of draft and develop, hold onto top prospects, stay young and financially flexible. (Other than as noted above re: Santana) Is Cash still in control of baseball ops? It seems like Cash got out-voted on how far they would go to keep Joe. But that really is management’s call, not Cash’s call. If the stories are true about Cash chasing after Joe in Tampa after Joe said “no, thanks,” you gotta really feel for Cash losing his partner in crime. And if Joe was on the hot seat for the 7 year drought, so is Cash. But in the recent past, Cash did gather up the new arms, trade for Abreu and promote Wang and Cano. Maybe he’s got enough credit with the Tampa Trio to keep his hand on the tiller and make them forget about Igawa. (You can’t hang Pavano on Cash – - everybody wanted Carl at the time).

As for the A-Rod saga, at the end of the day he’s one of 25 players. You cannot cripple your team or bend over backward for him at the risk of losing the rest of the ball club. They will make him an incredible offer and he will probably stay. Big Stein says he wants A-Rod to stay so he probably will make him an offer he can’t refuse (not like Torre’s contract). The “Goodbye A-Rod if he opts out” line was first uttered by Cash earlier this year, so it’s nothing new. As for A-Rod watching who the new manager is, that kind of statement is exactly what’s wrong with having an A-Rod on your team. He’s got no business insinuating himself in that mix. Boras is just using anything he can think of to get some leverage.

This will be an offseason to remember!

  32. murphydog

    Dr. Acula:

“I’m sure he was just looking for a nice juicy one to smack.”

Smack, beat, choke… I just love my new Thesaurus. No wonder he experienced problems with his throwing arm last year.

  33. Brendon

Alright I am against Randy Levine too, but we need to shut up about him, I admit i was an avid hater but i’ve backed off now beucsae theres other things to focus in like, Tony Pena, what do you guys think of Pena? I love Tony but can he handle New York? The Yankees have to make a big decision between experience or no experience.

  34. Brendon

Ozzie Guillen- no managing experience, won world series in 2005
Clint Hurdle- no managing experience, (could win worid seires) hired in 2002.

So does experience really matter? What do you think?

  35. David

CleanHouse, now why aren’t you working for a major league team since you have all the answers?

    Idiot.

  36. murphydog

Tony Pena? Former Manager of the Year, former catcher, respected by the players, not an “almost peer” to some of the veterans like Girardi, more experience actually managing than Donnie, not as likely to directly antagonize management like Girardi. But is he a big enough name for Steinbrenner & Sons? In their minds, he’s not a “real Yankee” like Donnie Baseball. Maybe the Tamp Trio splits the baby and makes Pena bench coach as insurance against Donnie freezing or brain cramping.

  37. murphydog

You can certainly win games without prior managing experience. But the problem is when you lose. Experience matters in NY because it’s all you have to rely on when the Boss tears you a new one on the back page after a loss. Lack of experience will be the first thing the media and the Boss(or little Bosses) jump on in the event of trouble in the Bronx.

  38. VOIII

The article in the Post has me less concerned about the mini Steins. At least they have a backbone unlike many kids who inherit their father’s business. The fact that they charged back Hotel expenses to people they were already paying obscene amounts of money to does not bother me. The media’s version of the Spanish Inquisition continues…Hughes for Santana is ridiculous, He may be better than Santana by the middle of next season. Keep the Kids and develope some more.

  39. Eugene in Michigan

Has anybody read the ESPN article about Hank Steinbrenner firing back at Torre!?

“Where was Joe’s career in ‘95 when my dad hired him?” Hank Steinbrenner told The New York Post. “My dad was crucified for hiring him.

“Let’s not forget what my dad did in giving him that opportunity — and the great team he was handed,” Steinbrenner told the paper.

Did Torre NOT thank the Boss for the opportunity?!

This guy has egg all over his face, blood all over his hands, and he just can’t clean it up.

Sorry Hank, you just might be losing a fan right now. I always loved the Yankees for their classiness.

    This, is embarrassing.

  40. Eugene in Michigan

Actually, to sum it up best.

Hank, where were the Yankees before you hired Torre?

  41. CATYA

Wonder why Hank was so inclined to remind us what Torre was as a mgr, before he came to the Yankees? Shouldn’t he have something good to say about Torre. Yankee’s fans admired him for what he did here. The jabs at Torre by Hank are only damage control, unappreciated and in bad taste. They hate all the negative press.Torre may have come here as an unknown. After his 12 yrs here ,he is etched in the teams history forever, because of his performance. So Hank what’s your point?

When as a mgr you’ve managed in the #1 baseball mkt, where do you go from here? I hope Torre lands on his feet. On a team that’s a good fit for his mgmt style.

  42. Brendon

Alright I can live with this, Donnie head coach, Tony bench coach…whos third base coach?…..can we please bring back luis sojo

  43. VOIII

    Eugene,
Where were the Yanks b4 they hired Torre?

    on the upswing in 93.
Oh and ah 22 WS rings 33 penants….

Hank was totally right in everything he stated. He has the right to defend himself against the Media’s ridiculous persecution.

  44. gianthinker

I want Tony Pena to get the job. I’d love Mattingly, my favorite player all-time, to be the manager but following Torre is dangerous ground. He made the playoffs all 12 years. What if we dont make the playoffs next year? I dont want Donny to lose his job. I’d rather have an older guy like Pena to lead the team for another year or two so Donny can learn under him and be ready for the job. Donny should be ready to take over when we go into our new stadium. Even if he’s needed earlier it would be because the next manager led the team to horrible results so if Donny then improved the team he’d be looked at better. Its just a better situation. I vote for Pena and keeping Mattingly as our bench coach. Keep Bowa as our 3rd base coach and name Eiland the pitching coach. Thats what I would do.

  45. J-Dawg

Tony Pena would do a very good job if he was hired. It would obviously do wonders for him to have a front office who is committed to winning, unlike the front office that he had to deal with in Kansas City. I honestly have no complaints with Pena, Girardi, or Mattingly. I think that the Yankees will be in good shape with any of the three managing.

P.S. Should be a cakewalk for the Patriots. They’ll be ready for the Dolphins after what happened last year when they went down there, when they were shut out 21-0. Miami is starting a real lemon (Cleo) at quarterback today, no pun intended.

  46. Brendon

what more does donnie need to learn? hes been the hitting coach and bench coach for the best manager in the game joe torre. I don’t think he is going to learn anything more from Tony than he already has from Joe.

  47. BBFan

    I love Hank Stein.
He has the guts to fire back and every thing he said was correct. Is it so difficult to handle truth?, I guess so.

Why should be keep quiet, when they are getting creamed by these media vultures? What is the additional harm that can be done? He was absolutely right, Yankees made Joe Torre.

If this is any indication, I am comfortable with Yankees future. He showed some fire….

  48. BBFan

“Wonder why Hank was so inclined to remind us what Torre was as a mgr, before he came to the Yankees? Shouldn’t he have something good to say about Torre.”

Read the full article. He did say good things. It was a balanced response.

Hey VOIII, any rings in the 80s and 90s?
22 WS rings since 1901. About 1 WS rings every 4 years.

Egg on your face as well.

  50. VOIII

    Eugene,
There were some kids named Derek and Mariano starting their first full season in pinstripes the same year Mr. Torre took over. another one named Andy just getting started on a promising career. Coinkydink? I don’t think so…Who’s to say Buck wouldn’t have reaped the benefits of the roster that was handed to Joe….

  51. murphydog

    VOIII:

“Hughes for Santana is ridiculous, He may be better than Santana by the middle of next season.”

In a “bad” year this year, Santana made 33 starts, went 219 innings, gave up 52 walks, had 235 ks, and surrendered less than a hit per inning (total of 183 hits). And he’s got a couple of CY Youngs. And he’s only 28. And he’s a lefty.

As for Phil Franchise, next year will be his first full season in the Bigs. He’ll have a new manager (and pitching coach probably). He’s definitely got enormous upside, but “better than Santana by the middle of next season” is a pipe dream.

As for charging back costs to the players and managers, however, I’m fine with that.

Hank and Hal scare the hell out of me, from what I’ve read about the two, neither has a desire to run this organization and you can bet everything will sold off by the two shortly after GS passes. These are the good old days.

  53. BBFan

Based on the news out there, I would not be surprised if Pena is the next manager.

Girardi is the better of the three, but he may not get the chance, due to the sensitive situation that exists with Torre departure.

If the Yankee brass beleive that Mattingly is ready, he will get the job. If not Pena will be made the manager and Donnie will continue to be groomed as bench coach.

Given that Mariano, Posada and A-Rod are all latin guys, making Pena the manager will have some silver lining.

Still, Girardi may do extremely well in the interviews (he is a much better communicatior than the other two), and the the new Yankee brass have proven they are risk takers. So, it could still be Girardi.

  54. yankee21

Any of these 3 guys being hired is fine with me but my preference is for Girardi.

Although Mattingly is one of my all time favorites, I just think personality wise he is too similar to Torre and I’m not sure how that is going to translate with ownership looking for a change.

Regarding Johan, I would probe the hell out of the Twins to see if they are willing to do a swap, Wang for Santana. The Twins get a solid starter for several years before he’s eligible for free agency and cheap,,, the Yankees get Santana for a year with the hope of having the inside track for free agency. Only if Santana would agree to an extension with Yankees do I even contemplate throwing in a Melky or an Ian. Otherwise, I lay low and try to up the ante for the eventual suitor.

  55. Joe from Long Island

    Some thoughts:

    1. If our projected starting rotation for next year performs as well as we all think and hope, then whomever the new manager is will look like a genius.

    2. Mattingly, Girardi, and Pena are all exceedingly capable baseball men. There is nothing to fear from any of them.

    3. Scott Boras is blustering when he says that ARod needs to see who the new manager is. Baloney. As long as it’s not Buck Showalter, he won’t care. Managers come and go all the time. There’s no guarantee that whomever the manager is now will still be there next season, and that goes for any team. As long as the money is there, Alex will be there.

The biggest question, in my mind, is whether you trade for Santana now, or wait for free agency, thus saving you players. Next is whether Atlanta will make Mark Texeira available, and what it will take to get him.

  56. Eugene in Michigan

    VOIII,

You didn’t really refute any of my points. You just brought up a new angle. The point is, the Yankees were not getting the job done . . . AT ALL, before Torre. Yet, Hank is implying that Torre should be at the Yankees beck and call because he was “handed” the opportunity.

Funny, Hank’s not being “handed” the Yankees team is he?

  57. VOIII

    Eugene,
22 rings since 1921 the Aquisition of Babe and a trip to the WS 40% of the time. Egg on My face? A drought of 17 years is as long as it ever got… ask a fan of any other team if he’d take that….To say Joe is the reason for 12 straight post seasons and then say he had nothing to do with the last 5 collapses is ridiculous…

  58. Doreen

    Dr. Acula –

I have a hard time getting worked up AGAINST the Yankees front office for charging back what seem to be “picayune” charges. It’s not as if the players can’t afford these expenses. Sorry. The Yankees are not cheap, please, and any suggestion to the contrary is just ridiculous.

  59. CATYA

Hank was on the attack, pure and simple!!! Cheap shot

Heaven forbid they admit in those 12 yrs Big Stein made any mistakes. Who signed off on Pavano and Giambi to name a few?

  60. Eugene in Michigan

Once again, egg on your face.

5 WS trips in 12 years for Torre. A little under 50%

Ask if any fan of any other team would take that?

  61. Paul

I lived in KC during the Pena era. Pena would be a joke. He had a great start in 2003 with the Royals, then nothing. His cheerleading attitude turned the Royals clubhouse against him real quick, and would be a disaster with a veteran team like the Yankees. I won’t even mention his game management, which was the worse of his job ‘attributes’.

He was manager of the year because he went something like 17-1 to start the season, and it was a decent feel-good story. That eroded real quick once his leadership skills were needed. They are non-existent; one episode I remember was when he told Angel Berroa to enter a late inning game as a defensive replacement. Berroa refused, and Pena defended him to the hilt when what happened when it leaked out. I think his defense was something like “He thought I was joking when I told him to get in there.”

    Anyone but Pena.

  62. VOIII

Hank is reaping the rewards of his predecessor’s work just like Torre did.

  63. murphydog

    Brendon:

Of course Donnie could manage right now. For some other team.

The thing about managing the Yankees is that it is so much more than Xs and Os. Donnie has the brain power and knows the game well enough. But can chronically well-mannered and respectful Donnie Baseball manage to keep his mind on the game and his players in line when all hell is breaking loose up stairs, non-baseball people are cursing him and calling him obscene names and he is getting stabbed in the back in the papers and watching Billy Connors coach his pitchers instead of Donnie’s pitching coach… just to name a few of the classics from the Steinbrenner playbook?

In fact, if Donnie is chosen, I would like to start a pool for how long it takes Big Stein to question Donnie’s fire or make a snide remark about the New Manager looking like he picked up bad habits from the old manager.

  64. Eugene in Michigan

Ha, VOIII, just go into hiding. You can’t deny any of the numbers.

  65. VOIII

    Eugene,
Actually it was 6 trips in 12 years for 50% clip. I guess Torre did all by himself…Never mind the incredible Roster he was handed.

  66. Brendon

Alright, I love Donnie, I think he is completley ready, but was he a pitcher or a hitter? A hitter, where do the yankees need help? Pitcing. If the Yankees hire Donnie, they better have a damn good pitching coach to help with some decesions because Donnie knows very little about the pitching, personally I don’t think any of the 3 candidates have very good pitching experience i guess you could say beucase of catching Girardi and Pena but not amazingly. So the Yankees need to consider who the coaching staff behind the next manager.

  67. Doreen

I absolutely enjoyed reading the interview of Hank Steinbrenner. Whether you agree with how this all ended up, at least he is not shirking from speaking up. If he’s going to be taking on all those responsibilities, he can’t be afraid to speak up.

There are three sides to every story. His, theirs, and the actual truth, which lies somewhere between the two. Not to discredit Mr. Torre at all or to suggest he’s not honest or anything like that — no, but we all filter every experience through our own prism.

I am also not suprised at Scott Boras trying to play the “team in flux” card. Give me a freakin’ break. Because EVERY other team in MLB is so stable, never changes front office and on-field personnel, etc. If ARod decides to opt out and plays the Joe Torre card, I will forever change my opinion of him. I have been an ARod supporter, giving him every benefit of every doubt in conversations with friends and family. I am certain Boras is saying to him, if you want to leaave, this is way to do it without making is sound like you couldn’t hack NY. And I would hope everyone would see through that. I’ve never “liked” Boras, but always acknowledge that he is very good at his job and if I needed an agent, I’d probably want him BUT this is just slimey. Slimey, slimey, slimey. And it’s too bad you can’t just say you won’t deal with him because he represents far too many players and you can’t take yourself out of every possible deal, I guess.

  68. murphydog

    Yankee 21:

“Only if Santana would agree to an extension with Yankees do I even contemplate throwing in a Melky or an Ian. Otherwise, I lay low and try to up the ante for the eventual suitor.”

    Agreed.

  69. yankee21

    Catya,

What ownership hasn’t made mistakes, certainly the Yankees’ have, but Giambi and Pavano were hotly contested with the Yankees emerging because of money and in Giambi’s case a special affinity with NYY..

Not many baseball people could have predicted the demise of both of these guys. Giambi was coming off an AL MVP and Pavano had one heck of a year in FL.

Big Stein did make mistakes but more so than any other owner in MLB he has exhibited the willingness to invest in his team and to do whatever it takes to win.

Us Yankee fans are the winners for this.

  70. VOIII

One of those stat geeks huh? Numbers don’t tell the whole story.

  71. Eugene in Michigan

What kind of argument with that? Other winning Yankee managers didn’t have have great rosters?

  72. TimH

The only article from the NY Post worth reading today is on page 3. An article about the guy caught walking nude in Times Square last week with a photo of him walking along holding hands with some lady and he in a Red Sox hat. Lol. Figures.

  73. randy l

    murphydog-
i don’t want to give up wang , melky and whoever else for santana. i’d like for the yankees to hire back neil allen, who overnight taught wang the sinker, as a special instructor.
it’s the seeminly small decisions to let go of key people like allen that undermine an organization. allen played with righetti, guidry, mattingly, randolph, chambliss, etc and was managed by martin and pinella. he also played with richard dotson while with the yankees. the reason this is significant is that dotson had one of the best change ups in baseball and when allen was near the end of his career and was looking for another pitch, dotson showed him this pitch. allen in his career threw two pitches, a 95 heater and a knee buckling 12/6 curve. that was all he needed until he had some arm injuries at the end of his career that took the velocity away. he never mastered the change up or the split fingered fastball that he also experimented with. but somewhere in this search for another pitch, he came up with the sinker that he taught wang.
why am i going on about the background former pitching coach no longer with the organiztion? the reason is that it’s a hundred and one decisions like this that make an organization successful. it’s not the big splash decisions that define an organization like trading for santana. it’s the small decisions like keeping a pitching coach that overnight created a pitcher who went on to win 39 games in two years.
developing pitchers and players like wang doesn’t happen without coaches like allen who have a history with the team and understand what being a yankee is all about.
i have nothing against dave eiland( he was on that 1988 team too as a rookie), but you’d like to think there’s room for allen and eiland and other coaches like them in the organization instead of seeing them picked off and exiled one by one as the latest power stuggle of the “suits” take place.
the steinbrenner sons and levine have no clue about the process i just described above how a good player like wang emerges. wang actually goes back to the 1988 yankees when all thes players were together. there is more to passing on the yankee game than just signing santana to fix everything.

  74. Eugene in Michigan

YOU pointed out the numbers. If you’re going to use numbers as your argument, then you better be sure it holds up.

  75. VOIII

Where were the Yankees after Zimmer left? The last 4 post season exits were huge embarassments….Torre was totally out-managed by 4 managers who’s salary combined do not add up to his. Yeah #s don’t lie…

  76. li

They get hotel rooms as specified in their contracts and meal money, too, so if they want upgrades or room service they should pay for it. What does not smell like roses is the deal Rudy gave them concerning new stadium planning and the shoddy record keeping.

  77. BBFan

    Speaking of the managerial choices:

The more I think about it, in the best interests of Mattingly, he should not be made manager. It may result in Yogi kind of sitaution.

Mattingly may turn out to be a good in-game manager, but his skills to deal with media are clearly lacking. Many of you must have watched how he handled the media for that game when Torre had sit out. His performance was horrible. He was veyy nervous. His answer that he did not go and argue with the umpire beacuase it was not going change any thing is a sign of weakness.

If there is one thing Torre proved is that for Yankees, given the roster, you need not be a great manager, but you need good skills to manage madia and you would be successful. I think that is Mattingly’s weakness.

  78. CATYA

yankee21 I’m aware everbody makes mistakes Hank’s interview didn’t allud to that point at all.It would have been nice for him to admit Torre did contribute to the legacy of the Yankees too. They both benefited from Torre’s hire.

    Doreen:

The more money involved, the higher the mountain of slime you have to climb. That’s why having A-Rod Incorporated for a teammate starts to get really tiring, regardless of the numbers. It’s been the same everywhere he went.

Jeter’s rich too. But he has the four rings, is the Captain and he got his money from George without Boras’ lilly-gilding representation. Boras is trying to cast his client as the Uncaused Cause, the Irresistible Force and the Immovable Object all in one. I hate Boras’ courtroom aggression, the seeming need to win every parry of words and all the ingenuity expended in trying to extract an advantage from every situation. The world class self-centeredness bordering on narcissism of it all…

Yeah, A-Rod developed a mutual respect for Joe. Hey, Alex… can ya’ let Joe’s body cool for a few days, for chrissakes, before you step over it on the way to George’s wallet.

  80. Eugene in Michigan

And why did Zimmer leave? Because of another front office blunder.

  81. VOIII

    Eugene,
You asked the question where were the Yankees pre-Torre…I simply answered it. The fact that other Yankee managers had great rosters is irrelevant. The point is that the Yankees were fine Pre Torre, with Torre, and will be post Torre. I suspect they will be better than Torre should he decide to manage another team. Unless it’s the equally agressive RedSox, who also turned a mediocre manager into a genious.

  82. BBFan

    CATYA,

    Read the article again.
He acknowledged that Torre contributed for the success.
His point was if you take credit for the succes, you also need to bear part of the responsibility for the failures. He did not say all the responsibility, part of the responsibility. That is a fair statement.

If we keep aside our blind faith in Joe and read that article with objectivity, it makes sense.

  83. VOIII

Eugene I will give you the Blunder on Zimmer. I was very upset with losing him. But the fact is Torre’s methods are not getting this team anywhere in the play-offs anymore. It is time for a change and some new ideas. Unless we bring Torre and Zimmer back ;)

  84. murphydog

    randy1:

I can’t complain about bringing back Allen. Why not? And I agree that in a perfect world a well-constructed team would be raised up the way you describe, with attention paid to pouring in quality at all levels. How could that fail – - it wouldn’t.

But the idea of trading for Santana is the way of Steinbrenner, who has just reiterated that the future is now and that the organization’s goal is win it all, now. In a perfect world, where there was patience and respect for process, we would take our lumps for a year or two and then regard with pride our new and powerful team, all home grown.

But just as there is no “I” in “team,” there’s no “patience” in “Steinbrenner.” They are just starting to rearrange the deck chairs and there will be hell to pay if there is no WS next year.

  85. BBFan

It is not fair to cirticise A-Rod at this time based on what Boras says.

Boras is simply doing his job to get an upper hand in the negotiations.

If A-Rod opts out that is when he deserves criticism, not until that time.

There are some hints in Boras statements that make me feel that A-Rod wants to renew with Yanks. After all his blustering comments, Boras says that they will negotiate with Yanks on an extention before opt out. He did not want to upset the Yankee brass completely or make them think that A-Rod will certainly opt out.

  86. yankee21

News flash; Torre is gone baby gone and no matter of justification for him or vehemence expressed against the brass, particularly Hank and Levine, will bring #6 back.

180-200 m payroll, on average at least 2X that of the rest of the teams and in some cases, 4 times (see 2003 marlins).
Results, lost ALDS in 2002 and ALCS in 2004, did not win a single playoff series since the 2004 record debacle. As a consequence the Yankees not only lost their swagger they also fueled the rise of redsox nation to bug the hell out of NYY fans until our team wins again. That really sucks!

Torre was great obviously at getting to the playoffs but that is not the stated objective of ownership, the goal is championship. That is why the owner has been willing to shell out a monstrous payroll and also pay his skipper the top salary in the game— by far.

Getting to the PO may be an ok objective for ATL, but ATL has less than half the payroll of NYY and a fan base that is largely distracted by the braves until football season arrives,, as ATL is a football town through and through.

  87. CATYA

BBF I know he made mention as a token jester. This press was about damage control. You don’t read that atrticle and think they did the best they could to keep him.I read the piec. This was about save face PR. That’s why this blog is the best.Yankee fans have passion!

  88. BBFan

    KATYA,

I do not see any reason why the Yankee brass have to take all the hits unfarily. It is thier right to respond and correct some inaccuracies portrayed by media (not by Joe).

NEWSFLASH: Dice-Ha-F’in-HA-HA takes the mound in the deciding game 7 and gets his @$$ handed to him before the end of the 3rd inning. There is JOY in YankeeLand and the Yankees start their quest for a better Pitcher-Handling Manager ( BIG POOL OF CHOICES THERE ) we resign A-Rod, MO, Posada, and Abreu. Our STarting pitchers next year are Santana, Pettite, Joba, IPK and Hughes and 2008 we win wire to wire for Championship number 27…Oh, and after Cleveland beats Boston today….Rockies Sweep Indians to finish the hottest team towards the end of the regular season AND in the PostSeason OF ALL TIME.

  90. murphydog

    BBFan:

Just as a person is properly judged by the company they keep, A-Rod is properly judged by his choice of lawyer and tactics. A-Rod is certainly not unaware or unapproving of Boras’ methods and statements. For someone as personally sensitive to anything said to or about him, A-Rod has no problem speaking out of both sides of his mouth, claiming to have developed respect for Torre and then immediately trying to use Joe’s departure to try to gain leverage.

It’s not the end that justifies the means, the means matter and are always remembered. That doesn’t mean I think A-Rod should be denied what he’s worth, or that Poor Old George Steinbrenner is a nice guy. I do think that trying to leverage the departure of Joe Torre is extremely cold, calculated and heavy handed. There are a million ways to skin a cat or make a deal, and A-Rod and Boras have chosen this one. Thus, in my mind, it’s fair comment time.

  91. CATYA

Getting to the play offs was a given in the Torre era.It may
not be the same for the new mgr. I hope we do make it to postseason and to the WS.This new mgr has a lot to prove.

Donnie doesn’t seem like he would take the abuse from Da boss that Torre lived with.I think he’ll walk back to his cushy live on the farm.

Joe G played with some of the players.Would they give him his due respect? Dusty Baker who loves and respects Joe T,
said this week on Espn that the coaches are like your uncle
that you can tell anything, and the mgr is like your father.
Would Joe G get that type of respect from the players?

  92. BBFan

    Murphydog,

I agree with you it is cold to use Torre’s departure as leverage. I do not like it either.

All I am saying is that it is Boras doing it. Not A-Rod. It is no different from What Boras did during Bernie negotiations long time back. Then Bernie talked to Stein and came back. I sincerely beleive it will be similar to that situation with A-Rod. At least that is my hope.

  93. randy l

“They are just starting to rearrange the deck chairs and there will be hell to pay if there is no WS next year.”
a loyal fan base that keeps the coffers full and a team culture can override a bad owner , and that seems to be where your and my hopes are, but there’s a tipping point where the owners are so bad they lose both .
zimmer is on record telling girardi that he knows the present ownership so don’t ask him his opinion because it’s obvious. i would not be shocked to see mattingly turn down the offer he’s given by the little steins. at a certain point, the prevailing perception could be that it’s a sinking ship. if that happens there will be wholesale jumping off.
the little steins are going to be overpaying to prevent this perception from taking hold. i guess that’s why you think a santana trade may be in play. i agree it’s going to be interesting, but i don’t overall see a good ending. i think the yankee are going to be like a stock on a slow descent. there’ll be some up periods ,but the long term trend will be downward.
in this age of blogs and the web, it is my hope that the heat will be so great on the little steins that the steinbrener family sells to a qualified billionaire. george did it at times with smoke and mirrors. i don’t think his kids can pull it off. this is an end game for them. they just don’t know it yet.

  94. murphydog

    BBFan:

I hear you. I happen to believe that a lawyer takes on the client’s personna. Bernie will always be remembered as a class act and a gentleman. A-Rod will not be remembered quite as kindly despite the fact that these two men had the same agent and each negotiated huge contracts for their time. The difference must come down to the person behind the lawyer.

I know that Boras could say whatever he has to say to whoever is point on these negotiations at Yankee HQ without having to flog Joe’s body around in the media. Negotiating in the media is a tactic that must be approved by A-Rod or else A-Rod would call Boras on the carpet and it would stop. It really comes down to an appreciation of the need to temper the appearance of A-Rod’s unlimited drive to maximize every iota of compensation, especially when the player has chosen to negotiate in the media, a public thoroughfare.

“i think the yankee are going to be like a stock on a slow descent. there’ll be some up periods ,but the long term trend will be downward.”

I think this is exactly the scenario that the Steinbrenners won’t accept. BY the same token, you have to admit that sticking with Torre for 7 years without a WS title is remarkable restraint from George. I think you will therefore have a tempered version of the anti-youth, free agent madness we all saw from Big Stein in his heyday – - but the Tampa Trio will not be able to commit to an all home grown program due to the time it takes. They’ll listen to Cash and Gene Michael and whoever else as long as they like what they hear and the ideas lead to a quick restabilization. They will be open to exchanging some youth in trade (Santana?) and spending for some free agents to cut down on the length of the journey back to the WS.

For a lower budget team, there would be no choice but to float down for a couple of years until the pieces came together again on their own. But because they are willing to invest big cash, they are looking for quick returns. IMO they will make some big moves this off season and Melky, Wang, Cano and perhaps even the big three kid pitchers are not entirely safe.

  100. nud

It is Donnie or BUST and the Yankees know it….Why is it such a big deal that the “Hitman” never managed a game?? Did Willie Randolph?? This is baseball not football, Matting will have enough guys around him to help with in game moves(very little to make in the AL) and potching changes (biggest challenge) Donnie is the only logical choice. If they can get Santana for Kennedy, Melky, Horne, etc.. (that won’t be enough anyway and I’d try to get Wang in that deal to solidify it) then sign Rowand to play center and we will be golden with Johan, Hughes, Andy, Joba, Moose and maybe IPK if he isnt in the Johan deal. Yanks need to make moves and big ones fast….Its gametime boys…I was crushed in 95 when Buck was jettisoned and HOW DID THAT TURN OUT?? PLAYERS will determine How far the BOMBERS GO IN THE FUTURE!!!

    DON MATTINGLY!!!!!!

what you have described is also the ugly duckling period that the red sox went through when the yawkey estate partnered with haywood sullivan, buddy leroux,o’connell, john harrington in various combinations. duquette spent heavily for pedro giving up prospects. he signed manny for a fortune. it’s not like some good things won’t happen, but like the red sox during that long dysfunctional period, the yankee ownership likewise will be a mess and disliked by all. we will see the equivalent fiasco of duquette chasing clemens out of town.
the smart thing to do for the steinbrenners, and the one that would have made life a lot better for the yawkey family , would be to sell now at the peak of the value of the team. there is no sense tarnishing george’s legacy. he himself has the “lead , follow ,or get the hell out of the way” plaque on his desk.
it’s time for them to “get the hell out of the way”.

  108. myrtlebeachfan

Clean House, your lineup is one of the worst lineups I’ve ever seen proposed for next season. That team would not come close to defeating the red sox for the AL east or to winning the wild card. With that lineup, you are guaranteeing failure for years to come.

Have some sense about you and realize it’s very counterproductive to expect people to even listen to you after insulting anyone who believes ARod, Matsui, Damon, or Giambi would help a team to the playoffs or world series. It’s moronic.

  109. Andrea

myrtlebeachfan: the funniest part of that line up was Betemit as the DH. Especially in the 9 spot. It’s admitting he’s not that good, yet still making him the DH.

  110. Jeter's Future Wife

what is everyone’s beef with Damon? he is the only one that hit (more than the rest) in the playoffs…sure his arm isn’t Melky’s but geez, Giambi, Matsui are way worse and Abreu will stay and he should. he loves being a Yankee.

Jeter’s Future Wife: I’m cool with Damon, as long as he comes into 2008 in shape. He can’t suck up the first half like he did in 2007. I like Damon in left. I think he makes some really good plays. I wish there were a way for him to kind of pass the ball off to Melky and have Melky throw the ball into the infield though :)

  112. Tommy

Doesn’t the aquisition of players like Damon diminish the rivalry? It does for me!

I really hope the Indians win tonight. Otherwise the Sox are on the verge of taking the Yanks’ place in MLB.
Rhoden in NYT today, as well as Kriegel at Foxsports.com have good takes on this possibility.

  113. Andrea

It would only diminish the rivalry if we traded for Damon.

  114. Peter Rabbit

Last year the Yankees lost twice to Kenny Rogers. The same Kenny Rogers that made it all the way through the playoffs using resin/pinetar on his hand.

This year, the Yankees lose because Byrd pitches a gem against them, and he’s taking HGH.

So Torre was managing against cheaters.

Joe Torre’s been knocked out the playoffs in the first round two years in a row due to cheating pitchers.

    That’s not fair.

  115. jennifer

    * 2. Torre rejected the deal and walked out after he realized it was a take it or leave it offer. Cashman raced after him in a final bid to change his mind.

Makes me think maybe they really did want him back, but only on their terms.

  116. murphydog

    Andrea:

I was offended really. Joe takes a stand on Domestic Violence and she makes fun of that to attack him? (She wrote: “It’s time to end the cycle of violence, New York!”). She accused him of a lack of cojones (and you know what part of the male anatomy that is). She referred sarcastically to men with psycho-sexual bruises, as though men whose fathers abandon them – - as happened to A-Rod – - don’t have issues as a result?

Can you imagine if a male writer attacked a woman’s lack of femininity or made joking reference to domestic violence or childhood abandonment by a father? What a jerk.

  117. Sharp Shooter

The Steinbrenner family look like greedy, self entitled rich, that think money can buy anything. How dare you Hank say those nasty things about Joe.Get this Hank, Joe brought Class to this horse and pony organization, and don’t ever forget that!!! We yankee fans remember the dark days before Joe came ,with your father making the Yankees the laughing stock of baseball with his antics.(Bribery. etc) If you wanted Joe gone there was a better way after 12 yrs of service.
Something you rich brats need to learn is how to treat people that are brave enough to work for You. Looks like your dad rubbed off on the whole Band of fools. You can’t buy a championship,it doesn’t work that way. Stop hiding behind your money.

PLEASE sell the team I’m sick of you already!!

No matter how you spin it Hank, you will never look good, never

    Huh-Ha!

Now we get to hear all the dirt!! LOL And why shouldn’t the team charge the players if they are upgrading rooms. And it sounds like Joe isn’t Joe everyman, now is he.

  119. jennifer

I”m thinking they are of the adult varity.

  120. jennifer

    * Alright I can live with this, Donnie head coach, Tony bench coach…whos third base coach?…..can we please bring back luis sojo

Are you nuts!! Sojo for third base coach!! Do you forget how horrible he was!!

  121. herb

Sharp shooter, well said the brain trust could’ve countered their offer .Joe was looking for better terms ,not more money. This blog has people that don’t understand that point.I work with contracts daily there’s always a counter offer.(wiggle room) Joe’s was a take it or leave it.Joe fired Big Stein!

  122. Andrea

murphydog: I totally agree. And very well put on your part. You should write a letter to the post!

Check the Link above…The people who are bemoaning the Torre treatment now, were doing the same thing 12 years ago for Buck…Steinbrenner looked pretty good just under a year later, wouldn’t you say?

  124. Ranting Guy

    Wow.

I’m glad some posters aren’t involved in making any personnel decisions for the Yanks. No offense meant but it’s better most of you stick to picking your fantasy teams rosters.

Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water.

  125. murphydog

    Andrea:

I already sent an e-mail to Peyser. Kudos to the Post for giving us the writer’s email address.

  126. jennifer

UGh I am getting killed in my fantasy football league!! I HATE RANDY MOSS!! He has 22 points by himself for my opposition!!!

  127. BBB

Screw the Pats, LET’S GO GIANTS!!! Osi 4 Prez!!

  128. Andrea

murphydog: if I could be articulate and write something other than “you suck,” I’d probably do the same. You’d think that after 2 English degrees I’d be a little more articulate.

  129. jennifer

I have the worst fantasy team and still somehow lead my division! It is all smoke and mirrors.

  130. jennifer

Jeter is getting alot of heat on message boards. People are getting annoyed about him not acting like a leader. And it is true. He stood up for Jason (a drug user), but didn’t for Alex. Told the fans not to boo Jason, but said I can’t tell the fans what to do when he saw a teamate getting ripped apart by fans.

Also not standing up like Jorge did after the season was over for a man he says is like a father.

  131. Andrea

It’s about time Jeter gets some heat for something. I’m not sure if this is exactly the right thing he should be getting it for, but I’m tired of him getting a by just because he’s Jeter and because he’s a Yankee and because he’s the Captain. It doesn’t always work like that.

  132. jennifer

I know I’m tired of hearing well he probably said soemthing behind the scenes!! Well that isn’t a leader. Most leaders are vocal. I think Jorge is more deserving of being captain than Jeter.

  133. jennifer

    * Brett Gardner: .385, .442 OBP. 4 stolen bases.

I wonder if there is any chance he’d make the team?

  134. Sharp Shooter

Jeter has mastered the art of evasion. He hasjust lost the Only person who didn’t bench his butt, because of so many double plays, he personally hit into this year.

He won’t get away so easily next yr,watch.Let’s see if next year he’s still top dogg. If Arod stays it may bring about a new captain too.

  135. Doreen

I mostly like Derek Jeter. But I think he has always had the wrong temperament to be a captain. He is not outspoken, simple as that. That is not how he operates. And as long as everything is running smoothly, he could get away with being a captain that’s a leader by example. I think Steinbrenner’s appointment of him was pre-mature. But, Jeter was in no position to turn down such a flatering offer, was he? And I’m sure he figured he’d never have to do anything differently than the way he was doing it.

Would someone refresh my memory – was Tino still on the team when Jetes was named Captain, or was it after Tino was gone? No doubt Jeter is the consummate team player, and I would never take that away from him. But a captain should be a little more vocal. Now, to be fair, he may have dealt with things quietly and privately, and that seems to be his way. But most people think of personalities like Munson, and yes, Varitek when they think of captains.

Although, Mattingly was a team captain and he is not the most outspoken individual either.

Plus, Jeter was very, very connected to Joe Torre, and I think you need to give him a break on this one. He really doesn’t need to say anything to the public, and what he says to Torre is of a private nature. In addition, he is still under contract to the Yankees. What can he really, really say? He will eventually have to answer a question or two, and I think everyone knows he will not put his neck out publicly.

  136. Andrea

Well, I’m sure Jeter is a good leader for the team and for his teammates, and I won’t take that away from him because I’m not there. But I am friends with the secretary of the dean of the college I went to (I know, I’m a dork) and she’s very anti A-Rod, and we have a thing that when a player makes us angry, we put a post-it over his face on the team photo she has in her office. When I moved, I basically just sent her an email of a player’s picture and photoshopped a yellow square over a player’s face. Well, I went to visit her after the playoffs and put a post it over Jeter’s face, and she all but stopped being my friend and told me that he’s Jeter, so that can’t happen.

Let’s face it–Jeter was one of the worst Yankees this post season. But she wouldn’t admit it, and still wanted to blame A-Rod. It just doesn’t work like that. If Jeter wants to be the captain, he also has to take the heat when he sucks. But no one said a word about his 3 absolutely awful rally-killing double plays this post-season. If that were A-Rod, t he press would be all over it.

Ok, I’m off my soap-box now.

  137. Pepper Brooks

Ok have to ask the question on the rumors Pete wrote about where the Yankees are pursuing Santana….

I have to think that the asking price is too much for the Yankees to give up. Santana is a great pitcher but is he workth Melky, Hughes/Kennedy and another prospect?

there is nothing out on the market worth signing.

by the way, watching the Sox last night, anyone think of how much Manny’s contract would have been worth to the success of the Yankees versus the wasted money on Giambi, Igawa, Pavano, Farnsworth, and even signing Clemens…. 23 mill for a DH as good if not better than Ortiz …. Should have made the move when Manny was on released.

  138. Andrea

Sharp Shooter: Steinbrenner decides the captain, not the manager.

Doreen: I didn’t say that this was the right thing to give Jeter crap about necessarily, and I’m not sure it is. I’m just glad he’s getting some heat finally. Besides, if he actually did say something, it would be one of his cliches. I’m sure he’d work “We just didn’t get the big hit today” in there somewhere.

  139. Doreen

Just for my own curiosity, I looked up the past captions of the NY Yankees.

What stands out to me, is that most of the guys who were Yankee Captains are more in the Jeter mold than the Munson mold. Thoughts? Classy guys who aren’t very outspoken.

Yo Andrea, I was reading the threads from last night. You busted the chops of that woman for her syntax. Babe your a bit of a hypocrite.Check out your post at 2 3:03 on this thread. You have 2 english degrees? Stop picking others peoples post to pieces. She was kind and let it go.Others would have got you good!Your a head case.type A I think!

  141. Andrea

Doreen: I’m actually surprised, looking at the list, that more of thtem aren’t catchers.

  142. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

…You know, I was hoping that maybe at least last night Boston would lose or something…

At least I got a 1 and 3/4″ broadsword out of my weekend, though.

  143. Brendon

well I personally like Tony Pena, but can he handle the new york market?

  144. Doreen

    Andrea,

Jeter deserves all the heat in the world for not being able to come up big in the playoffs this year. Absolutely. He gets no pass from me just because he’s the captain, and just because he’s Jeter. He played nowhere near where we expect. Our expectations are high, though, and maybe that’s not fair to begin with. But if you’re going to give ARod and others heat, then you’ve got to pass it along where it should go, no matter who it is. And he did also have an “off” year, especially coming off of what should have been an MVP year in 2006. I suspect he was more hurt than he ever lets on. But both he and Damon need to learn that sometimes you do your team a bigger favor by sitting than by playing through the pain.

It’s interesting to me that his bland statements are really starting to bug people. A couple of seasons ago I noticed how he had really mastered the art of never saying anything. This year, I actually enjoyed that Kim Jones seemed to be able to get under his skin a little, and he would a smile and crack back at her. She got him to show some life. But as captain he should be the one answering most of the questions post-game, good or bad, I think. He doesn’t have to be Mr. Tell-All, but people do get tired of cliches. He’s got a lot more personality than he likes to show.

  145. Andrea

Sharp Shooter: It wasn’t a syntax issue. If you’re talking about catya, I honestly have no freaking idea what she’s talking about half the time, and when I ask her to clarify, or disagree based on discrpencies in understanding, she either tells me it’s a difference in opinion, or that I’m a troll or a pit bull. It’s very frustrating.

It wasn’t just yesterday, this goes back to a lot of discussions I try to have with her, and sometimes I’m almost getting what she’s trying to say, but I just don’t, and when I ask her to clarify, she just starts with namecalling and it’s just mean sometimes.

I’m not a hypocrit. I looked back at the post, and while you may not agree with the way I worded what I said, there’s nothing wrong with it.

  146. Doreen

    Andrea -

I was surprised that Guidry was a captain.

  147. Doreen

I don’t want to start anything here, but SOME of Catya’s posts ARE confusing and it takes a couple times through to try and get what she’s trying to say. Not all, by any means, but some. So I understand what Andrea’s trying to say. And I’ve never noticed any of Andrea’s posts to be confrontational.

  148. Andrea

Doreen: I get that the whole team was not-so-good this post season. But the double plays were just awful. I mean, in game 4 (I remember because I was there), A-Rod struck out his first 2 times up on 6 pitches. That’s awful. But at least he was only getting himself out.

Oh well. At the same time, maybe it’s better he’s not getting a lot of crap for it. Let him feel good going into 2008. They’re all kind of getting a pass on their crappy post-season performance because of all this insanity surrounding the manager situation.

  149. BBB

“Brett Gardner: .385, .442 OBP. 4 stolen bases.
I wonder if there is any chance he’d make the team?”

Wow, I didn’t know he was putting up numbers like that. Who is considered the more highly regarded prospect between him and Action Jackson?

  150. Andrea

Doreen: I was a little surprised about Guidry too, because he’s a pitcher, but he’s Guidry. So I was less surprised. If it were, say, Kevin Brown, then it would be a shock.

  151. BBB

Woo Hoo! Shockey TDs are bringin’ SexyBack! (sorry, random!)

  152. Andrea

BBB: I Think I might dub you the Queen of Random.

Look babe you may be cool, but back off a little. You are too serious on the bloggers! That’s all I’m saying.

  154. BBB

Andrea: Cool, works for me! But can T-Clip then be the King of Random? :D

  155. Andrea

Sharp shooter: If you say so.

But please don’t call me a head case. That was my problem with catya. She kept calling me a troll and a pit bull and I didn’t like that. You are entitled to my opinion, but please stop with the name calling.

  156. Sharp Shooter

Andrea, I forgot to ask ,Who put you in charge of the blog posters? Last I checked Pete has oversight of the blog, not YOU.

  157. Andrea

    BBB: haha, of course.

  158. Andrea

Sharp Shooter: you’re right. My fault. I’ll try better next time.

  159. jennifer

We have a few guys in the minors that are outfielders that I believe are pretty close to the majors. I just hope it isn’t for another team.

  160. yanksrule

  161. Andrea

yanksrule: don’t worry about it. I’m a pit bull, a troll, and now I’m a headcase who thinks she is in charge of the blog. Sharp shooter is just looking out for things. Making sure everything is on the up and up.

  162. BBB

Daaaamn, I think someone peed in Sharp Shooter’s Cheerios this morning. What’s your damage bro – other people need to “back off” but you are flinging insults around like nobody’s business? How’s that work??

  163. Sharp Shooter

Andrea, I, read the post the chick used the word once on the whole thread,I just rechecked. She used it once, your lying and trying to back peddle. She said it once! That’s my point, you are good with manipulating the facts in your favor. I’m a little different,I go for the kill!! She let you off the hook big time,by not coming back on you.

  164. hmmm

“Wow, I didn’t know he was putting up numbers like that. Who is considered the more highly regarded prospect between him and Action Jackson?”

Jackson, and it’s not particularly close. Jackson has All-Star potential, especially if he sticks in CF.

Gardner has 4th OFer potential as he has no power to speak of.

  165. Andrea

FINE! I already said you win. I’m a headcase, and I’ll try better next time. Catya already decided I’m a troll and she’s not talking to me anymore. Can’t you just do the same?

And her backpeddling comment was to someone else–and if you actually read through that little conversation, that’s another one that makes zero sense.

  166. Sharp Shooter

BBB I came prepared for this chick. She twist words and get away with it.

  167. jennifer

BBB I think someone did more than pee in it. LOL Talk about waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

  168. Andrea

It’s just a blog. I don’t manipulate people in “real life,” so I certainly don’t bother doing it on a blog.

  169. jennifer

Andrea don’t worry about it. It is just someone looking to cause trouble.

  170. Sharp Shooter

Andrea ,she said you have a pit bull mentality.

    Grrrrr! Grrrrr! Grrrrr! down boy!Haha

  171. BBB

Thanks hmmm. I was just thinking in terms of a possible Johan Santana trade. Jackson’s potential makes me think that might be a bad idea, cause if Melky was traded to the Twins and Aaron Rowand was signed to replace him, then he’d be blocking Jackson’s spot for years to come. Do you know if scouts think his value would decrease significantly if he were to move to, say, RF? But then again they have Tabata for RF eventually…

  172. Pete the repeat parrot

Joe Girardi is the correct choice ….

  173. jennifer

The longest deal I would give Aaron would be 3-4 year deal. No way would I give him the 6 year deal he is looking for.

  174. Andrea

Jennifer: Yeah, I got that now, and I am also thinking it’s possible they’re the same person based on typing paterns. If not, it’s uncanny! whatever.

I hate talking about Melky not in CF! It makes me sad! You bite your tongues! All of you!

  175. Doreen

I think the only person this off-season to get more than a 3-year deal will be ARod. That includes Mo and Jorge. The Yankees have been burned too many times in the past to do it again. ARod is worth taking the risk on, and if renews his contract or signs an extension or whatever it is that you call what he needs to do to stay in NY, part of the money comes from Texas, and he’ll still be a young man even if they give him a 6-8 year deal.

  176. jennifer

Hey Melky could play right, He has a canon for an arm.

  177. BBB

WOW Rowand wants a 6-year deal?! That’s insane. That is exactly why I hope to keep developing the positional prospects on the farm and stay as far away from as many FA’s as possible. The funny part is that some team will gladly pony up a 6 year deal…I hope it’s not us! Esp. since he is likely a Type A FA and it would cost us a 1st round pick..

  178. jennifer

I would also look into trading Matsui. He hasn’t been the same since he got hurt last year. Maybe we can take either Sexton or Beltre off of Seattles hands.

    * Richie Sexson 1b
    4 years/$50M (2005-08)
    $6M signing bonus
    05:$4.5M, 06:$11.5M, 07:$14M, 08:$14M

    Adrian Beltre 3b
    5 years/$64M (2005-09)
    $7M signing bonus
    05:$10M, 06:$11.5M, 07:$11.5M, 08:$12M, 09:$12M
limited no-trade clause allowing Beltre to block deals to 8 clubs (one is SD)

  179. jennifer

I believe the Yankees are getting smarter as far as the long term deals. They waited out Damon, and got the deal that they wanted.

Never mind forget Sexton, he stunk this year. But Beltre could replace Alex should he leave.

  180. Andrea

Ok, Melky can be anywhere in the OF. Just none of you talk about trading Melky. It makes me cry inside.

  181. jennifer

Now the only problem with my deal is,

#1 does Seattle need an OFer?
    #2 does Alex leave?
#3 will mats approve the trade?

  182. Andrea

yeah, that’s the deal with Matsui’s contract? can he be traded?

  183. Mark

    Jennifer:

Forget Richie Sexson. A human strikeout machine.

  184. jennifer

Oh and one more problem, do they have someone to play third if we take Beltre away from them.

  185. Meadowlands report

    The G-Men rule !!!!

    Go Big Blue !!!!

  186. BBB

Unfortunately I don’t think Seattle does need an OF. They have 2 pretty good LF prospects in Adam Jones and (awesome name alert) Wladimir Balentein who were both midseason callups this year. It’s a shame cause I’d definitely take Beltre too if A-Rod opted out. Although I still have some hope that we can trade Igawa to the M’s, so maybe we could get Beltre that way.

  187. jennifer

Mark I looked at his stats after I posted it and realized how stupid the deal would be. His ba was almost .200 this year.

  188. BBB

Hell yeah Meadowlands!! BIG BLUE!!! 5 in a row now!!

Yo, I’m sure most of you already have read about Hank Steinbrenner’s latest laughable comments about Torre. (If not I urge you to read them. http://www.nypost.com/seven/10....._at_i.htm)

But then, check out my boy again. He wrote this amazing, amazing, rebuttal “The Smallness of Prince Henry.” Shakespearean even. http://theyankeesrepublic.blogspot.com/

If you haven’t, you gotta read ‘em both.

  190. jennifer

Well we have to look for a sucker to take Igawa. I can’t figure out who would be stupid enough to take him.

  191. kill-schill(ing)

Yo, I’m sure most of you already have read about Hank Steinbrenner’s latest laughable comments about Torre. (If not I urge you to read them. (Check out Sunday’s New York Post, “Boss Jr. Fires Spitballs at ‘Ingrate’ Torre”)

But then, check out my boy again. He wrote this amazing, amazing, rebuttal “The Smallness of Prince Henry. Shakespearean even.

    http://theyankeesrepublic.blogspot.com

You gotta read ‘em both. After I read it, I feel like the Hank may be worse than George.

  192. BBB

Well Seattle is pretty dumb, plus having a Japanese catcher might increase Igawa’s value to them. And I’m sure they wouldn’t mind dumping Beltre’s salary so they could sign a FA SP. Maybe Igawa & Betemit for Beltre? I know Wilson is supposed to have all sorts of upside but he was as frustrating as Craig Wilson with the constant strikeouts on 3 pitches in big situations…

  193. jennifer

How about Igawa and Matsui for Beltre. Let Alex walk. we clear

5+13+27 off the books, bring in 12 million

  194. jennifer

I’ll tell you one thing. No way in hell do I want to see Wilson playing third next year.

  195. Brendon

Igawa to the M’s…i like…throw in Pavano too, might help us free up money…more money to lure away Johan

I don’t know if this make sense, but instead of giving up prospects, how about throw in money too see if they’ll bite, am i making sense? or am i just on crack

  196. jennifer

Pavano will be on the dl most of next season. Plus I’m sure the Yankees are drawing insurance on him. Just let him go car shopping and do nothing.

  197. Brendon

but how good is beltre? he didn’t do anything this year. i’ve heard of a mike lowell a-rod swap beucase the redsox really want a rod

  198. Dave

I find it funny that the media claim the fans are all with torre and think it was atrocious for the yanks to disrespect torre like that. Yet, most of the fans comments discuss how the deal wasnt insulting or disrespectful whatsoever and completely disagree with the media’s ridiculous perspective – who wouldnt want five million with the possibility of making 8 million for two yrs straight if he reached his goals to manage the yanks for one more yr and lead them (not win) a world series?

I think Girardi is the only one of the three who can handle the pressure of being forced to get to the ALCS in his first yr as manager or be considered a failure. Again, if he can almost get a 20 million dollar team into the playoffs with two stars in dontrelle and cabrera what could he do with a 200 million dollar team with a star at every position and some of the best pitching prospects in baseball?

I think trading wang and melky for santana would be a genius move but i find it hard to believe that the twins would take that deal when they could prolly get better from another team. I wouldnt trade the big three for santana becuz any one of them may eventually be as good as Johan and they r all younger. We might as well wait out this yr let some other team give up all of their prospects for santana and then sign him in the off season by offering him a gigantic contract. Then, our starting rotation could very well be santana, wang, hughes, chamberlain, kennedy – that would be ridiculous. We could give santana an eight yr 300 million dollar contract becuz the rest of the starters would be making league minimum. Cano, melky and tabata would also be making very little and possibly all starting. The salary would all go to Santana, six positional starters and the pen. Thats about half the team.

    “Igawa and Matsui for Beltre”

Sounds good to me, I’m just not sure Seattle has a spot for Matsui unless they were to trade one of their OF prospects for a SP. Which is certainly possible, they need starters badly.

Wilson starting at 3rd next year would be an absolute disaster. If worse comes to absolute worst I’d rather move Cano to 3rd and trade for someone like Mark Grudzielanek. He only has a year left on his contract, and he’s not gonna blow anyone away but he should bat about .300 and play good D.

Another one of Seattle’s players I covet is lefty reliever George Sherrill. Would be GREAT if we could get him as a toss-in in a bigger trade.

“Yo, I’m sure most of you already have read about Hank Steinbrenner’s latest laughable comments about Torre. (If not I urge you to read them. (Check out Sunday’s New York Post, “Boss Jr. Fires Spitballs at ‘Ingrate’ Torreâ€?)”

actually, the comments were pretty balanced if you aren’t just plucking out certain lines to make a story. read the WHOLE article.

also, Hank NEVER said the word ingrate. and yet it is IN QUOTES in the headline. how does the media get away with that? the NY media has no scruples.

some more quotes from the same article:

“Now, was he the perfect guy to manage that team? It seems that way. He did a great job, no question.”

He said he likes and respects Torre, calling him a “top manager” and “class guy.”

“We were discussing everything, not just Joe,” he said of last week’s meetings in Tampa. “We took a little more time than usual [because] we wanted to make sure we got it right.

“You can’t have the fans and media dictate what’s a fair offer. The portrayal of this being a cold business decision is completely incorrect. This was a baseball decision.”

Though Torre said the conversation lasted only 20 minutes and he saw no intent to negotiate on the part of his bosses, Steinbrenner said that after Torre rejected the deal and walked out, General Manager Brian Cashman raced after him in a final bid to change his mind.

“Brian went to talk to Joe, tried to convince him to take it,” he said.

A last-minute change in Tampa prevented Cashman from flying back to New York with Torre, or the GM would have tried to get him to stay once more, he said.

Steinbrenner hinted that other changes might be coming.

“Joe’s not going to be the scapegoat. He’s not the only one that bears responsibility for what happened here,” he said. Still, he said, the ending was “sad.”

“It was a strange day for all of us, ending a 12-year relationship. Tell you the truth, I think we’re all sad. And I think Joe was, too. But sometimes things change.”

  203. jennifer

That is an insane contract for Johan. I don’t like these long term deals. i’d give him 5 years at most.

  204. Catya

Sharp Shooter would you do me a favor and please stop talking about an issue that has been settled. My name is all over this thread and I have not written a single word.Yesterday was yesterday. 205. jennifer

Yeah funny how other media outlets just pick quotes, overall I don’t have a problem with what Hank said. And reading that Cash went after him kind of changes my feels on it. Maybe they did want him to stay only under their rules.

I hope the Yankees realize that Wilson is not what they thought he would be, and won’t even consider him as a replacement should Alex leave. The question is could Cano handle a move to third? If he can move him and pick up a second baseman.

  206. Andrea

Is it absolutely positive that the Twins are trading Santana?

  207. jennifer

It sounds that way, Johan isn’t that happy and they want to get something for him as opposed to just letting him walk.

  208. Sharp Shooter

catya sorry my bad, I had a bad week.

Yo Andrea sorry for the harsh words. The babe was right. This Joe thing has me so upset.I needed a punching bag, sorry.

  209. BBB

“I think trading wang and melky for santana would be a genius move but i find it hard to believe that the twins would take that deal when they could prolly get better from another team.”

What if the Yanks throw in someone like Jeff Marquez though? Or Chase Wright? (I guess Clippard would be a possibility too but I really don’t want him to get traded.) But if Minny was getting Wang PLUS another potential MLB pitcher from us, that would make the deal a lot more palatable for them.

We have better pitching depth on the farm than probably most of the other teams who would be interested in trading for Johan. A deal like this is where we should use that depth to our advantage. I think we could get it done without trading one of the Big 3.

  210. Andrea

Gotcha. I just hadn’t really heard anything “official” about Santana trades. I guess I wouldn’t, though, until there was one.

  211. Dave

Beltre isnt nearly as good of a hitter as Matsui – His career averager obp is 327 which is absolutely horrible. His career average is 271. He brings some power and some speed but matsui is a far better hitter and has a far better eye than beltre. I dont understand why anyone would want to make that deal. Moving cano to third is a bad idea as well – third baseman are much better hitters than second baseman and Im sure we can find better third base hitters on the FA than second base hitters.

If we are going to give arod a 10 plus yr contract at 300 million plus dollars, we are NOT going to get away with giving Santana only 5 yrs. He is not one of the best pitchers in baseball he is far and away the best pitcher. He has won 2 cy youngs and been in the top ten in cy young voting every full season in his career. And the guy is 28 yrs old – we can sign him at 29 – id say we can give him an eight yr contract at least and be satisfied. We gave Moose that long and he isnt even close to as good a pitcher. He gave the twins a hometown discount ( a huge discount) and signed for four yrs. If he signs with the yanks, he is going to want to cash in and will take no less than eight yrs. I think it is worth it by far. He is the only pitcher that is worth eight yrs. Id give him ten if he asked for it but if we can get him for eight – we should consider ourselves lucky. I can see maybe eight yrs 240 million but I think that is a bargain.

  212. Doreen

    hmm,

The problem with most people is they don’t read past the headlines, and many who do, don’t read past the first paragraph.

I agree with you. I thought it was a balanced article, well written. Plus, you can’t judge tone of voice from the written word.

uh oh, Jennifer. Don’t let BBB see that you said that.

  215. Pepper Brooks

Trading for Santana could be the wrong choice, if you have to give up Hughes/Kennedy/Cabrera….Long term, not worth it.

Best choice for replacing Torre, Trade A-Rod for Mike Soscia…

  216. jennifer

There aren’t any third baseman on the market.

  217. Exit Joe Torre Enter Sleepy Joe

torre is going to cash in. hes going to release a controversial book, broadcast, and trick some team into hiring him for his “intagibles”

  218. Andrea

Isn’t Andy Phillips a 3rd baseman? I know he’s not optimal, but he didn’t do so badly offensively last season, and if we got a better offensive 1st baseman, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad? He’s a better option than Wilson Betemit, at least.

  219. Dave

Pepper brooks, I would take alot of players for melky. Certainly we should take santana (arguably the most valuable player over the past five yrs) for melky ( a decent fourth outfielder on most teams.) I hope you meant Hughes/kennedy/chamberlain in your post. Melky isnt worth much if anything to most teams. Wang and melky for Johan would be huge. The only problem is once we make the trade, we are basically doing it for one yr of santana in the hopes of signing santana at the end of next season. The yanks big brass has to ask themselves if we trade for santana what are the chances we actually sign him? If it isnt much better than just signing him without the trade, we might as well wait so we can keep wang and whoever else we need to give up. Id rather not have satnana next yr and then sign him the following yr so that we can have a rotation of Santana, Chamberlain, Hughes, Kennedy and Wang in 2009. That would be the best rotation in baseball and a shoe in for the world series. PITCHING WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

  220. jennifer

Yeah Andy was a third baseman, but I can’t see him being our everyday one.

  221. Brandon

Jenninfer, you raised good points I don’t have a problem w/ what Hank said if anything most of what he said was right. On Torre’s influence to this team people act like he was the only guy that did anything.

Don Zimmer was hired by the Yankee organization not Joe, Buuck Showalter and Bob Watson/Stick Micheal we’re the makers of the team handed to Joe Torre. If Joe took that contract as an insult then that’s on him. I for one am glad the chapter on Torre is closed, this team needs to move on.

Oh and w/ Wilson Betemit trust me he will be solid I just think he will be the next 1B/UTY (like Casey Blake but more offensive hitting potential) remember the hitting coach is Kevin Long and just look at what he did for 1B Carlos Pena. All in all Alex isn’t leaving I just don’t see it.

  222. jennifer

They would trade and sign, NO way would they trade and then hope to sign him.

  223. Andrea

I was basically just saying if A-Rod opts out and there are no other options. It would be better to have Andy Phillips be the every day 3rd baseman than Betemit. I don’t think anyone saw him be the everyday 1st baseman, and that worked out for a while.

I don’t know. Trying to find the silver lining. And by that, I mean I’m trying to find a situation in which Wilson Betemit does not have an every day role on this team.

    I miss Scott Proctor.

  224. Dave

fREE AGENT THIRD BASEMAN: Pedro Feliz, Mike Lowell, Mike Lamb.

Id rather sign Lowell or Lamb than move cano to third and sign a second baseman or keep betemit at third. Neither could stand in arods shoes for a day nevermind a season but next to betemit or Catillo, Easly, Kaz Matsui or Loretta they look pretty solid,

  225. Pepper Brooks

    Dave, meant to include chamberlain.

Here is my take on Melky. If you trade him before the season, who plays center. Damon cannot do it, Duncan cannot do it. Are the Yanks prepared to promote from within – not sure they have a minor league CF who is ready.

But, if they are making that trade, I think immediately, you end any ARod discussion, and give the cash that you would give to Arod to Santana. As the playoffs have shown, good pitching will trump a stacked lineup – Yanks, Boston, Cleveland (by Andy)…But you do not make the trade unless you have the opportunity to negotiate an extension. For one year, it is not worth trading because his performance could be greatly increased playing for a team like the Yanks and then drive up his price – imagine knowing you have Santana ready to pitch in back to back series against Boston, Toronto, and Baltimore… Simply fascianting.

  226. Andrea

I’m willing to bet the Red Sox will at least try to keep Lowell.

  227. CYF

No way do the Twins trade Santana for Wang and Melky alone. If he actually does go on the market, the competition to get him will be something fierce. I believe it’ll take Wang and one of the big 3, plus Melky and/or another upper tier prospect. This is the best pitcher in baseball (an American Leaguer too, so none of the inflated pitching statistics you see with the NL’ers), AND a lefty, AND a strikeout machine. In other words, the most rare and lusted after commodity in baseball. If Minnesota were foolish enough to do a deal for Wang/Melky, the Yanks should jump on that post haste. I love Wang and Melky, but the best pitcher (lefthanded) who’s only 28 and in Yankee Stadium is something to dream of. Hopefully, the new stadium is as kind to lefties (don’t see why it wouldn’t be).

  228. Brandon

Dave, Mike Lowell is garbage, so is Lamb, they wouldn’t survive a season in NY and no way we commit to him for 3 – 5 yrs. at 3B, then it really is a rebuilding yr.

  229. CYF

Talking about lefties, I’d love to see Jeff Francis in pinstripes, but there’s zero chance of the Rockies trading him.

  230. Dave

Yea, if they trade they must sign him. The problem being if some other team trades for him cuyz they offer somethnig better than Wang or melky or the twins wont talk with us unless we throw in hughes, Chamberlain or kennedy like that ridiculous gagne deal where the sox gave up nothing but we were asked to mortgage our future. Heres to hoping we trade for and sign Santana or some other team trades for him and cant sign him and we picked him up in the FA market next yr. I cant imagine many teams offering anything better thn a wang ( a runner up to the cy young) type pitcher who is making close to league minimum and is 25 and a semi decent starting centerfielder who is also making chump change for Santana. We would have to sign Santana immediately and prolly to a deal to the tune of 8 years and 240 million following the last yr of his previous contract. Id take that in a heartbeat. Then we would have a proven ace ( a real ace not a guy who wins 19 games due to run support, cant strike people out and pitches to contact,) three aces in training and Pettitte who can serve as the veteran who wears his heart on his sleeve and leads the pitching staff to victory. Moose can sit in the wings along with Norton, Kontos and Humberto Sanchez just in case anyone goes down or fails to live up to expectations. How great does that sound?

  231. Andrea

    Jeff Francis is insane!

  232. Andrea

    good insane….

  233. CYF

Yah, I know Francis is a pipe dream, but a good young lefty that wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Santana….. you can always dream and throw out something out of the blue into the hot stove.

  234. Andrea

maybe Cash could try something and offer Colorado something. Never know. I doubt it though.

  235. BBFan

I am happy to see that cooler heads here finally succeeding in putting some sense into what Hank Stein said. Earlier today, in my repsonse to KATYA, I said that one should read the full article and it was balanced.

Hank gave credit to Joe where it belonged. He also responded to the bullshi*t from the media guys, including our beloved Peter. He came across well in his response. Obviously, NY Post dramatised the title and many here on this blog are falling for it.

  236. BBB

I think I can categorically state that I would not rather sign Feliz or Lamb than move Cano to 3rd and look for a 2b. 2bs are much easier to find, and Feliz and Lamb suck. Lowell would be better but I’m sure the Sux will try hard to hold onto him, besides Fenway makes him look way better than he actually is. A lot of his hits there would be outs at the Stadium.

  237. BBB

Do we have any good IF prospects on the farm besides the officially useless Eric Duncan? I know we have Juan Miranda at 1b and I really like him. When I saw him in Trenton he was crushing the ball all over the place. And Montero could possibly move to 1b too. But what about 2b or 3b prospects? Anything?

oh, also, speaking of 1b that reminds me. I saw awhile ago that Carmen Angelini was listed as a 1b on milb.com. I thought he was an SS???

  238. Dave

Lowell and Lamb arent nearly the garbage that Andy phillips and Wilson Betemit are. They arent as garbage as most of the second baseman on the free agent market this yr as well if the yanks consider moving cano to third. Basically, if arod opts out, lamb or lowell are our only ooptions. Of course, you dont give them three to five. You sign them for one yr and wait until a better third baseman goes on the fa market.

I agree, I would be surprised if the twins take melky and wang for johan considering that the twins know the type of young pitching talent the yanks now have. But what if the yanks offer Wang, Sanchez and Melky or wang, norton and melky or wang, betances and melky. Now you are talking about a proven 19 game winner (two seasons in a row) in the american league who is prolly runner up for the cy young two yrs in a row AND MAKING CLOSE TO LEAGUE minimum for the next two or three yrs and is only 25. A centerfielder with great defense and a decent bat who would serve as a decent replacement to hunter and is also young and making practically nothing. And we can offer numerous arms still on the farm who can add to their farm system depth in kontos, norton, Dellin Betances or Huimberto sanchez. With the rise of Chamberlain, Kennedy and Hughes and the acquisition of santana all of these guys become expendable and can basically be used as leverage for trades like this. Obviously, they could add to the depth of the pen but with the ability to get the best pitcher in baseball, we might as well throw all of the talent we have at them with the exception of the big three and tabata.

  239. Dave

i dont think we have any s9olid infielder prospects

Mike lamb is better than the majority of second base free agents – i just think moving cano to third would be a horrible idea. He isnt even that good at his throws from second to first. His offense will prolly suffer as result and the yanks would lose all of the edge they have from a solid offensive force at second. Instead cano would become a subpar or average third base hitter. Third baseman usually have a ton of power. They might as well trade for a third baseman. Lets see if alex stays first before we start have legnthy convos about his possible replacement. I for one, think he will stay. If he doesnt, we are in trouble, there is no way around it.

  245. BBFan

Bret Gardner will be a solid 4th outfielder.
If Melky is traded, Damon will be the starting CF and Brett will be the defensive replacement in the late innings.
This of course until Jackson is ready in a year or so.

If Melky happens to go in a deal, the best move is to sign Aaron Rowand to a 3-4 year reasonable FA contract and hold things until Austin Jackson is ready which won’t be until at least 2010.

  251. Tommy

Agreed that so much depends on the AROD outcome. I’ve never been a supporter; the melodrama and bluster of Team AROD makes me ill. That said, his decision will be the starting point of the entire offseason.

If he goes, maybe they should just suck it up, retool sensibly and go with the kid pitchers. Wait to see if they could get Santana after 08.
Alot might depend on what happens up in Boston the next 10 days.
If they win tonight, and win the WS, look out. The brass might panic, and offer MINNY the world.
Also, i read somewhere that BOS is considering offering Bucholz, Ellsbury, Lester or combinations thereof for Santana. Doubt the Yanks would stand by if that is the case.

Sorry, hmmn and Doreen, I thought Hank’s comments made him look petty and self-justifying.

Even Hank’s praise was equivocal and qualified. “Now was he the perfect guy to manage that team. IT SEEMS THAT WAY. He did a great job, no question.”

    It only SEEMS that way?

And if he “sincerely wanted Joe to accept that offer,” as he says, then he’s not only petty but an arrogant fool besides. No one extends a non-negotiable offer and then wonder why some rejects it afterward. Non-negotiable offers amount to ultimatum.

And the dude, whose article I posted, was right. The Steinbrenner’s didn’t “HAND” Torre anything. If anyone was handed anything it was Hank.

Poor Hank: It’s tough to cover your butt when your foot’s in your mouth.

Clemens starts next week or I give my Jets fandom the serious once-over.

    Dr Acula

You realize that the man heading the steroids investigation is a memeber of the Red Sox front office, don’t you?

    Front Office Directory
    Officers
    John W. Henry Principal Owner
    Thomas C. Werner Chairman
    David Ginsberg Vice Chairman
    Phillip H. Morse Vice Chairman
    Larry Lucchino President/Chief Executive Officer
    George J. Mitchell Director

    No conflic there.

  295. jennifer

No, no conflict at all. I’d bet my house that if David Ortiz’s name ran across his desk he’d run to espn to show it. Oh wait no he wouldn’t.

How did all the owners allow that to happen?

  296. Sharp Shooter

catya I miss your post.I do know who you are baby. Are you still mad? Can we talk about it over dinner, please? Do you think Don or Joe will be manager?

Donna wasn’t trying to be funny.

  297. gayle

I may be very nieve but I will wait to hear the full story before I crucify Byrd. As much as I want to I wAtched his press conference and it does seem somewhat believable. He is either legit in wehat he says or really really stupid

He says that he has 3 doctors prescriptions

He used his own personal credit card as well as his own personal address as well as various clubhouse addresses
ie he was not trying to hide anything

He stored the HGH in clubhouse refridgerators again not trying to hide anything

he says his teams as well as MLB and the Union were aware of his medical problem and the stuff he was using to solve it

  298. Brandon

don’t quote me.. but a Japanese interviewer just leaked Hideki Matsui is willing to waive his no trade clause if he loses his LF job to Johnny Damon if anyone can check it’s the Hochi Newspaper, would be appreciated thanks.

  299. Tommy

I often wonder why Mitchell agreed to lead the steroid investigation. It just seems insignificant for someone with his background and accomplishments.

  300. pat

Did anyone see the suggestion of Bill Gallo (I think) in the NY Daily News today for Torre to replace Bud Selig when he leaves? Not a bad suggestion. He’s familiar with the workings of both leagues, knows the business from a player, manager and broadcaster, has experience with one of the tougher owners in the game, is known for his calm demeanor, knows how to handle the media and knows how to work a photo op. Might be the perfect landing place for Mr. Torre.

  301. jennifer

Well the cynic in me thinks he did it so he would get your exact responce. :)

  302. Jeter's future wife

I have no problem with Hank saying that….he has a right to defend the Empire and absolutely the players should be responsible for anything else they charge, obviously they have the money and why should the Yankees pay for their porn?

  303. jennifer

Brandon I would figure he would be upset about not playing left. But bottom line, Damon is a much better lf’er than Matsui. Yeah Damon has a crappy arm, but I don’t think it is as much of a problem in left as it is in any other of position.

I was at a game this year that Damon kept making outstanding catches. I knew there was no way Matsui would have made the catches.

  304. catya

gayle, good point Ankiel in St Louis has a simular problem
explaining his alledged usage too after his surgery. I bst he’s on the list.

Sharp Shooter Answer: Not for nothin.

  305. jennifer

Exactly Jeter’s wife. They make loads of money if they want the extras like porn, or room service, or upgrades. They should pay for it.

QUOTE: I think the Yankees should file some sort of charges. He did win a game against us. UNQUOTE

They Yanks plan to, right after Joe gets finished asking the umpires to stop the game because of midges.

QUOTE: my guess is around 11:30 PM we’ll find out the Red Soxs will make the WS (it’s in the bag)around 11:40 PM their fans will migrate to these parts and start the spamming around 1 AM they’ll get drunk and make Pete’s Blog a rant forum around 2 AM some will pass out on the screen wasting thier breath it’s going to be a very jolly ol’ night UNQOUTE Maybe we should all call it a very early night

QUOTE: Iâ€?m guessing Nancy Drew will make a huge error! UNQUOTE There is no need to demean women by calling him by a girl’s name.

  307. Brandon

yeh I agree Jennifer, IDK how true those statements are by Matsui but if the Yankees trade him they can get some talent back

  308. jennifer

I’m a woman, I think it is funny calling him that.

  309. Andrea

I don’t think it’s the fact that people are calling him a woman’s name. It’s not like they’re calling him Kelly Drew. That wouldn’t be funny. It’s the idea of Nancy Drew. She’s a funny image. She was kind of a pansy, and I don’t anaticipate that she was very good at baseball.

  310. Brandon

I’ll just agree calling JD Nancy Drew is more demeaning toward woman, because Nancy has done better w/ that name then JD ever has :D

  311. Andrea

I think Drew Barrymore has done the most with the name. Anyone?

  312. Kill-Schill(ing)

And isn’t a “Nancy” synonymous with being a pansy.

In Joey Salvia’s song “Don La Greca Stand By Your Team,” one of the lyrics suggests something about acting “like a little nancy”.

  313. li

Even if you think it is funny, when you call men you think are weak or fragile by women’s names (e.g., Carl Pavano, Carla, JD Drew, Nancy) you are implying women are weaker/not as good. That is demeaning to women.

  314. Andrea

I would never condone calling a man by a woman’s name ordinarily. Calling Pavano Carla isn’t funny. But picturing J.D. Drew with the face of Nancy Drew makes me laugh.

And, as Kill Schill pointed out, “nancy” is a slang term for a pansy. Partciularly in the British vernacular. So to an extent, I agree, and if you were to call Carl Pavano Carla, I wouldn’t like it too much. But Nancy Drew is funny. I picture him with the haircut and the big grin and a magnifying glass.

  315. Tommy

Calling him Nancy is a not so thinly veiled way of saying he hits like a girl. Is that demeaning toward women, or just a cute taunt? Let the females decide.
It is demeaning to him and utterly ridiculous.
I bet noone was calling him that in the first inning last night.

How bout Drew Carey? He’s probably an Indian fan.

  316. Andrea

That’s not to say you’re not entitled to your opinion, because you are.

  317. BBB

“anyway on a good note BIG BLUE BABY !!! ”

Yeah Brandon!!! Big Blue Baby – thats what my display name stands for, lol. Sack pack is back and OSI IS DA MAN!! And for the bright red cherry atop the ice cream sundae, Beagles lost at the last second today…hehehe.

  318. BBB

Oh and I agree with Paul Byrd that it is VERY VERY suspicious timing that the HGH news came out today of all days. Good for him, I’m glad he had the balls to say that, he is absolutely right. I mean, coincidentally, on the day where he might get the ball in relief in game 7? Curious and curiouser!

Anyway, I don’t know if I believe Byrd’s story about his doctor or not but at least he is addressing this head on rather than pussyfooting around, so I have to at least respect that.

What’s really interesting to me is his teammate Betancourt was actually suspended for PEDs a while back. The broadcasters haven’t mentioned this at all from what I’ve seen, tho I’m sure they will tonite. But anyway if I were a reporter covering this story, I’d go straight to Betancourt for a quote…see if he mans up or punks out w/a “no comment”..

  319. BBB

Last but not least, calling Drew “Nancy Drew” is pretty mild compared to “GayD Drew” as he is called in Philly. So to whoever was complaining about Nancy, should I summon a waaaaambulance? :) (j/k of course!)

  320. Ray (red sox fan)

I guess if you are a Yankee fan the best you can talk about right now is the merit of calling JD Drew Nancy or not. Suffice it to say that “Nancy” is still playing and doing better than Arod and several other Yankee players during the post season. Guess you guys could use some more ‘Nancys’.

  321. jennifer

It is going to be very cold for the world series this year. it is something like 40 degrees tonight in Denver.

  322. Andrea

I agree BBB. I’d take the Nancy comments over the gay comments. I hate it when people call A-Rod Gay-Rod. Hate it.

  323. jennifer

It is the first thing “Nancy” has done all year. That one homerun was worth 14 million.

  324. Andrea

If I were the Orioles, I think I’d be a little pissed about how much time he’s spending doing crap for/with the Red Sox….

  325. Andrea

Haha, I’m glad he said it. I always thought Mike Lowell had huge eyebrows.

  326. Dave K

    Did he say Daniel Matsuzaka?

  327. Rocco

why not have Damon and Perdo throw out the first pitch also? I mean doesn’t Millar still play for another team?

  328. Jeter's Future Wife

so are we trading Matsui or are we simply putting him on waivers? which is it?

  329. Jeter's Future Wife

I wonder if Derek had any video charges in his room? I mean, apparently, he has the real thing or things in his room and then forgets to pay for parking! The nerve of him!

  330. BBB

“I guess if you are a Yankee fan the best you can talk about right now is the merit of calling JD Drew Nancy or not”

Much like I guess if you are a pink-cap wearing, Yankee inferiority complex-having, bandwagoning Sux fan, the best thing you can come up with to do during your team’s Game 7 is perusing a Yankee blog. lol, what a winner.

  331. gayle

I am not watching teh game but pl;ease dont tell me that Kevin Millar threw out the first pitch that is unreal; if true

  332. BBB

Andrea: yeah I hate the gay comments too. Like it’s such a bad thing! I’m sure there are players that are gay, in fact I have my unofficial list of ones that make my gaydar go off, but I don’t want to bash them, I want to go shopping w/them! :)

  333. Jim Clark

If Torre were to get the commissioner job (although I see Bud Selig being “temporary commissioner of baseball” unti 2057)
I wish him the best. But Bill White had pretty much the same credentials when he became AL President and he found the job to be a nightmare. Too many people asking for jobs. Joe deserves the best; he did a lot for the Yankees in the 1990s and was still pretty good in the regular season in the 21st century. His calm, demeanor and dignity were major assets.

  334. jennifer

He announced the red sox lineup.

  335. Rocco

    gayle

Kevin Millar did throw out the first pitch.

  336. jennifer

God does Jake Westbrook suck!! :(

  337. Andrea

gayle; it’s true. And then he read the line up. He obviously has a man crush on Varitek.

  338. Global Warming

1-0 Boston and it looks like the game is over already.

Stick a fork in Cleveland, they are done.

  339. jennifer

They are overcooked and burnt to a crsip.

  340. Rocco

They should have just gotten Trot Nixon to do it… he was already at the stadium

  341. BBB

I would be pissed as hell about that if I were an O’s fan. I think O’s fans already hate them alot too, so I doubt this will help matters much.

  342. Andrea

I totally called that J.D. Drew DP

Yeah, BBB. I find it hard to believe that of the hundreds of professional baseball players, not one of them is gay.

    Is Asdrubal Cabrera wearing pearls?

  343. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Boston has all the momentum so cleveland’s got work to do.

  344. Phil - 27 in '08

I just read that Kevin Millar is not a member of the MLBPA…anyone know why? Was he a replacement player during the strike like Shane Spencer?

  345. Dave K

    Phil – Yes he was.

  346. yanksrule57

    Clean House,

Are you even a Yankee fan?
You can’t be because your suggestions are so bizarre.
    Milton Bradley?
You know he tore his ACL throwing a tantrum, right?
When you look up the phrase head case in the dictionary it says Example:”See Bradley, Milton, aka Cancer, Clubhouse”.
    Joe Crede?
Yeah just the guy we need to replace A-rod.
Obviously you spent some time in thinking about this because you gave a very detailed response with specific recommendations.
But really, if you think the lineup you proposed would be better (I agree it would be cheaper) you haven’t watched a lot of Yankee baseball.

  347. Phil - 27 in '08

Dave – thanks…I finally found an article online detailing why he “crossed the picket line.” Interesting story:

    http://legalball.com/Stephen_Marshall

  348. Andrea

Are those people with the MVP sign serious?

  349. Rocco

    Maybe Red Sox MVP yeah…

  350. gayle

I did not know that about Millar (that he was a scab player). I wonder why he didnt have the same issues as Rick Reed or Cory Lidle. They were never accepted by some players yet it seems Millar has been embraced

  351. Andrea

Jake Westbrook is like Moose. He keeps toying with my emotions.

  352. YankeeJosh

The slow motion HD replay is amazing. I could have sworn Lofton was out live.

  353. Andrea

What’s the song that they play at Fenway at the end of games?

  354. VOIII

    Is it “Sweet Caroline”?

  355. Rusty

hate to say it, but this is a pretty damn good game.

  356. Andrea

VOIII: nah, Sweet Caroline is during the game, akin to “Cotten Eyed Joe” or the YMCA at Yankee Stadium. They had it in the movie Fever Pitch . I’ve never heard it except in the movie, and the other day.

  357. VOIII

I used to like that song, now I can’t stand it :)

  358. Andrea

VOIII: well, I’ve never been to Fenway to hear it, so I can still like it. I kind of don’t like how the mets stole it and play it at Shea now.

  359. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Am I alone in thinking this one’s headed for extras?

  360. Rusty

    jake westbrook? seriously?

  361. Marc from Portland Maine

    It looks like it Becca.

  362. VOIII

Are the mets still stealing music from other stadiums? ;)

  363. Andrea

VOIII: It would look that way!

  364. VOIII

The pitching tonight seems so hittable, Make you wonder what the Yankees would have done against the Sox in this series.

  365. VOIII

The whole “Enter Sandman” at Shea controversy was amusing…

  366. Andrea

Supposedly, Wagner had “Enter Sandman” with whatever team he was with before Mo had it. Blah blah blah. My issue is that Wagner’s not a badass, so he doesn’t deserve a badass song.

  367. sunny615

Has anyone else read the article on ESPN where Byrd admitted to taking HGH? Lovely – we lost to a pitcher who beat us with illegal substances… just great.

  368. VOIII

Lofton’s gotta take 3rd Varitek has no arm

  369. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Am I alone in hating Kenny Lofton right now?

How the flying Dante’s Inferno do you NOT run on that?

  370. Rusty

larry bowa would have sent lofton…

  371. VOIII

    Blake just pulled a Jeter….

  372. Global Warming

    Good night Indians.

  373. Bada Bing

That’s horribly conservative running and coaching on that play at third. 7th inning, down by a run, with Papelbon lurking you have to take that chance. Hopefully it doesnt hurt the Indians in the end.

  374. Rusty

3rd base coach actually held him up. wedge was shaking his head in the dugout afterwards, they’re gonna lose the game on a blown call at 2nd base and an inept 3rd base coach…

  375. BBFan

Why are people so down on Jeter?
He has only one bad playoff series. It happends.

  376. VOIII

    I guess Papalbum for 8&9, this sucks…

  377. Joe

Well, if Larry Bowa leaves, I’m sure Joel Skinner will now be available to coach 3rd.

  378. Dave K

Rebecca – I’m not happy either, but it wasn’t Lofton. He was held up. Makes you realize how important a guy like Larry Bowa is.

  379. Andrea

I was JUST saying that Bowa would have sent him on that.

  380. VOIII

I’m down on Jeter cuz he has not been a good captian. still love him as a player. Though he has lost some range at SS and should think about CF or maybe RF he has the arm.

  381. VOIII

I’m down on Jeter cuz he has not been a good captian. still love him as a player. Though he has lost some range at SS and should think about CF or maybe RF he has the arm.

  382. Bada Bing

There’s no doubt in my mind that Bowa would have sent him. I cant remember to many bad decisions at 3rd that Bowa has made.

  383. BBFan

All the breaks are going Red Sox way.

  384. section 344

    Go get em Rockies.

  385. Bada Bing

I’m turning it off, I cant stand to watch a the celebration at Fenway that is 6 defensive outs from occuring. Go Rockies!

  386. YankeeJosh

I think the Lofton move was the right one. That ball was smoked and was in shallow left when Manny got to it. With one out you can’t have the tying run thrown out at the plate. If anything, blame is on Gutierrez for not getting to second. A sac fly ties the game.

Doesn’t look like it will matter though.

  387. Rusty

damn and i was sorta havin fun watchin that.

i hope josh fogg slays beckett and helton bats .400 with 4HR on the series. Rockies in 6.

  388. BBFan

Many think Jeter is a selfless player and he thinks team first. Willhe he voluntarily move out of SS position in the best interests of the team in the near future?

  389. VOIII

Well I done for the night, here come the trolls….

  390. J-Dawg

Darn Joel Skinner. If Cleveland doesn’t come back, Skinner will be about as welcome in Cleveland as former Browns owner Art Modell.

  391. Global Warming

Does anyone think the Rockies have a chance in the World Series? I mean all that momentum they had invested in the bank kind of went out of the windows with all those days off IMO.

Then again, I’m still eating crow on that Rockies would be swept by the Phillies prediction :)

  392. VOIII

I never thought Jeter was selfless. He is well regarded and was surely raised by excellent parents but I can’t see him ever Sacrificing his position or his stature.

  393. Drive 4-5

How did we get beat by these choking clowns???? The bonehead call the Skinner and Blake’s double play took the life out of the Indians. Go Rockies!

  394. Boston Dave

will you people stop whining about Jeter being the captain? please. if the yanks won you’d be kissing his a$$. when they lose you whine and moan. both jeter and posada deserve to be captain. be happy the yankees have multiple players that are worthy. does posada not speak up because he doesnt wear the C? of course he still does. relax. jeter is the captain and he deserves it.

  395. CaptainsCorner

This is absolutely nausating!!! Does the Indians Gm like the sound of the crowd now? It doesnt sound like it will be quite. Garko, does the champagne taste good? Lofton that crying loser costs them 2 runs. I wish the Yanks hitters and pitchers had half the balls that Bostons players do.

  396. Kill-Schill(ing)

hey what was the score in the 8th inning of Game 7 in ‘03?

Was it 4-1 or 4-0? 4-1, right? Let’s hope history repeats itself.

  397. VOIII

Just when I give up on Cleveland they get a rally going :)

  398. Rocco

“How did we get beat by these choking clowns”

Well this is a 7 game series. If the Red Sox played a best of 5 they would have lost 3-1 also.

  399. Kill-Schill(ing)

Watch Pronk The Moron goes deep. I feel it.

  400. CaptainsCorner

I wish Hafner can hit I would love nothing more then for him to hit one out here.

  401. Boston Dave

papelbon goes fastball outside first pitch every time. go the other way pronk!

  402. Mo

    It was 5-2.

  403. Andrea

So the other day, someone asked if anyone actually knew the name of the 3rd base coach for the Red Sox, Rockies or Indians.

I’m guessing no one’s going to forgoet Joel Skinner’s name for a while.

  404. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Is it me or does it sound like they’re chanting let’s go A-Rod?

  405. Boston Dave

i would blame casey blake just as much as skinner. horrible double play and then makes an error the next inning.

  406. Boston Dave

why is tim mccarvers scalp bleeding? oh wait… that’s hair dye.

  407. VOIII

BDAVE, Who’s whining? Jeter does deserve the C on his uniform. by default (no-one else makes sense)not because he has displayed good captainship. Captains lead by more than example, they help their teammates, they always have their back. They get on them when their slacking. Great player, Great Yankee, Great Teen Idol, bad captain…

  408. Bob

Andrea, that was me who asked. lol

    GO ROCKIES!!!!!

  409. Andrea

Bob: I bet you’ll remember Skinner for a while now, eh?

VOIII: no no no, no C on the uniform!

  410. CaptainsCorner

The Rockies better be rested and ready to go for the WS!!! Hopefully they can beat this team. Boston winning another WS would be too much to take. You better believe if that happened the Boss would flip and give Arod and the free agents whatever money they want. Lose the manager, Boston wins WS, Yanks lose Arod or Posada or Mo?? Not gonna happen…unless the H and H boys are in charge and extremely cheap.

  411. VOIII

This is why the ALDS should be best of 7. I think the Yankees may have been able to do this…5 game series are too easy for a weaker team to win with a couple of hot pitchers.

  412. Bob

I actually did know he was the 3rd base coach.

Was just trying to make a point about how big a deal they were.

Guess I look pretty dumb now. lol

Stupid Indians. You just know the Rockies magic run is gonna end now and all those obnoxious New Englanders will be running their mouths all winter. Shoot me now.

  413. VOIII

Well at least my boss will be in a good mood all week…He’s a Boston fan ;)

  414. Boston Dave

VOIII – you’re entitled to your opinion… but thank God you aren’t running the team.

  415. Andrea

Bob: well, I bet a LOT of people are going to remember him now!

I think the Rockies can give Boston some trouble. Do you really think tubby Schilling will be able to breathe in Colorado? Clemens had a hard time, and he’s a freak of nature with his work outs.

  416. BBFan

It is not over until it is over!!!

  417. VOIII

If Boston wins another one Redsox nation will over run the country. Fairweather fans :(

  418. Boston Dave

well… if Colorado doesn’t pull it off, I am moving from the place I’ve lived my entire life. I can’t take this.

  419. BBFan

I guess now it is over.

  420. Buddy Biancalana

The Red Sox sure do have that Killer Instinct the Yankees used to have.

  421. Bob

I was really hoping Boston wouldn’t be in the WS. Wanted to just watch it and enjoy it without really caring who won.

But I am so sick of watching all those loser fans in Fenway. I just want to punch all of them in their preppy little faces.

  422. Boston Dave

Bob, I could not have said that better. either part.

  423. VOIII

Boston Dave, Why do you say that? is a figure head position that important? I’m not saying trade the guy…Geez

  424. Rocco

between this and the patriots and BC the New Englanders are going to choke on their own smug. I hope something worse then the Buckner incident happens in the world series and the Patriots lose to a wild card team in the playoffs.

  425. Bob

Well, I’ve seen enough. Have no interest in watching them celebrate.

  426. Buddy Biancalana

I am rooting for the Rockies big time, but somehow I feel the Red Sox are going to win it all especially with home field advantage.

  427. Andrea

Oh, Casey Blake, you silly little bearded man.

  428. CaptainsCorner

And people say that Jeter is the worst SS? Peralta is an awful fielder.

  429. Buddy Biancalana

At least Mark Shapiro & his trophy wife will keep their mouths shut.

  430. Rocco

Casey Blake is on my list of people i do not like.

  431. Boston Dave

VOIII – nobody was crying about Jeter being captain when they were winning. that’s all. There is nothing wrong with leading by example and he commands respect. also, nobody here knows what Jeter is like in the clubhouse. You can have Gary Sheffield captain your team… I’ll take Jeter. Like I said, just because one guy is captain doesn’t mean the other guys have to sit back and do nothing. saying jeter is a bad captain all of a sudden is a copout by upset fans desperately trying to find excuses for a lost season.

  432. Buddy Biancalana

I can’t believe Cleveland let this happen, they should have finished the Sox at home.

  433. Andrea

Rocco is on my list of people I do not like.

  434. CaptainsCorner

I have been rooting for the Rockies ever since the Yanks made there yearly falling apart. Now that Boston is in I have to root for the Rockies even more!!! But there biggest problem is going to be there starting pitching. Francis is good and then you dont know what you are going to get. 2 rookies, and Fogg can be ok. Hopefully they are not too rusty.

  435. Boston Dave

can they at least bean youkilis or manny??

  436. Buddy Biancalana

Gotta hope the Rockies catch some huge breaks & take advantage of anything they can to win. It can be done, they have that something special.

  437. Buddy Biancalana

This has been a really tough 2 weeks to be a Yankees fan.

  438. VOIII

Boston Dave, When the Yankees were winning Jeter wasn’t Captain. I am not blaming his captainship on anything. Just think he should stick-up for his teammates a little more. Also, I did not even want that malcontent Sheffield on the team never mind being captain.

  439. CaptainsCorner

You think Cashman and the H and H boys are watching this in Tampa together? Saying why cant our team play like this? lol pathetic…

  440. PB in DC

well, I guess the Red Sox didn’t roll over against the Indians like the Yankees did.

    Congrats to the AL Champions.

Imagine bing an Indians fan what a joke.. skinner good job as 3rd base coach.

buck is a moron the rookies matsuzaka and okajima!!!!!!he said they pitched 2 rookies tonight.. that is technically true but okajima is 32 yrs ol and dice k is 27..

    buck is a schmuck….

boston is atough team there players are tough teams like that you need to put away wehn you have your chnce…I am interested to see if the rockies come to play or are blown away…

cc and crmona pitched terrible and betancourt is toast… betancourt is 32 and had his 1 grea yr.

perez was also terrible against the sux.

Hal had a nice rebutal to all the torre revisionists today!!!a fair comment not mean but accurate….

  443. CaptainsCorner

It would of been nice if Hall of Famer Beckett had to be used tonight maybe get smacked around alittle bit. So then maybe he wouldnt be totally ready for game 1.

  444. Andrea

Victor Martinez is crying. That’s very sad.

Ok, everyone, listen very closely. What the hell song is that?

  445. YankeeJosh

Andrea, my Red Sox friend says it’s “Dirty Water.”

  446. VOIII

Well it aint “Cleveland Rocks” ;)

  447. Andrea

YankeeJosh: That makes sense. One of the words sounds like “dirty.” Thanks! It was bugging me!

  448. VOIII

    Andrea,
Hopefully we’ll be singing “Rocky Mountain High” after the WS….

  449. Rocco

“well, I guess the Red Sox didn’t roll over against the Indians like the Yankees did.”

you realize Both the yankees and red sox were down 3 games to 1 to the indians right? The only problem was that the red sox had more games to try to catch them… I bet the Yankees could have come back being down 3-1 but i guess we’ll never know.

  450. Andrew

    This is nauseating.

  451. Andrea

VOIII: there’s got to be a better song than that….Rocky Mountain High is a terrible song.

  452. CaptainsCorner

Watch we will see Torre celebrating on TV with Boston in there club house.

  453. Andrea

CaptainsCorner: as long as I don’t have to see him in his underpants riverdancing with Papelbon.

  454. VOIII

Well Sinatra’s “New York, New York” would have been nice… maybe next year. If we ever find a new manager…

  455. Buddy Biancalana

Nice of Ortiz to take off his jersey before the game was over, what a joke.

  456. VOIII

I bet Damon wishes he stayed in Beantown….

  457. jeep girl

Not sure if this has been posted yet but Girardi has the first interview tomorrow…donny on tuesday..Go Girardi!!!

Hey, I’m really liking those “Miller High Life” commercials.

Tough watching Boston celebrate but they deserve it.

  459. VOIII

Well it’s about that time when the Trolls start calling to rub a little salt in the wounds, so I think I’ll call it a night.

  460. AJ

Nice to see how classy Ortiz is. Granted you have a 9 run lead but you don’t go around the dugout with your tanktop on and goggles with 1 out.Boston fans have some nerve always calling out us Yankee fans but I don’t ever remember us showing up a team like Ortiz did tonight. That team is filled with classless idiots Manny,Youk,Papelbon,Schilling etc.It is a shame to see them in there. Nice to see Cleveland forgot how to play baseball in Game 7.I guess there world series was playing us.

  461. Clean House

Hey Andrea do all of us a favor:

STOP MAKING MULTIPLE POSTS WHEN YOU CAN SIMPLY AND POLITELY
FIT ALL YOUR PSYCHOBABBLE INTO ONE POST.

It’s pretty annoying to have to scroll down 400+ posts cuz you make about 60 of them. This isn’t a chatroom.

  462. VOIII

Clean House, Who the F%&& died and left you in charge? GO AWAY you moron….

  463. Rocco

    Just ignore the trolls.

  464. Andrea

No worries. It’s hate me day. And I’m not sure “Dirty Water” was the song I was thinking of. So maybe that’s the song they play at the end of games, but I’m thinking of a totally different song. I’m dumb.

  465. Clean House

VOIII who the #@$% died and left you in charge to tell me to go away, jacka ss? I don’t like Andrea posting every third to fifth comment like she’s i.m.ing/ texting her friends and this is random thoughts time. She can post all her sh it in one post, not 10 out of 17 or 23 out of 77 or whatever which is what it seems like. She’s not really adding anything to the convo save responses to comments without referring to the authors so we know w.t.f. she’s talking about? She’s playing the “I’m ignoring you” game with me cuz she knows she doesn’t know when to s.t.f.u. on here and someone finally called her out on it. She drives up the comment totals which in turn makes it a longer time to scroll to the post screen, it’s annoying. Understand?

I’m not in charge of anything any more than you are which is not at all, just tired of a comments section motormouth who doesn’t know when to s.t.f.u.

I told all of you what this team needed which was $100+M cleared getting rid of five overpaid losers (Giambi, A-Rod, Abreu, Damon, and Matsui), you can’t come up with anything better than insults.

  466. Andrea

I wasn’t playing the I’m ignoring you game…you told me to shut up, so I was. My goodness.

  467. Jim in CT

The first song they play after every win is “Dirty Water” by The Standels. Sort of the opposite of Sinatra’s “NY-NY”.
The second song is “Tessie” by the Dropkick Murphys (South Boston Irish punk band…yes there’s a guy in a kilt playing bagpipes in it). They took a very old Broadway song that was sung incessantly and annoyingly by Sox fans during the 19-teens championship years, then reworked it. Steinberg commissioned it back in 2004. It can be googled and youtubed if you can stand it.

  468. Clean House

Andrea I don’t hate you, you’re not worth hating, and get over yourself. I just don’t like you making every xth comment on here like it’s your private chatroom or email when it’s not.

Back to the overpaid losers. What has Matsui really ever done for the Yanks besides give them just about what’s expected of him in the regular season then disappear in the postseason? He’s fu cked up two consecutive postseasons with his pathetic hitting and fielding (2006-07) thus needs to go either by trade or waivers. I proposed put him on waivers cuz that’s what Boston did to Manny Ramirez after 2003 which buries Matsui’s 2003 or 2007. Manny buries Matsui then and now on fear factor alone as lefthanded relievers lick their chops at the prospect of facing Matsui. If Boston can try to get rid of a guy better than Matsui in 2003 and now (Ramirez), the Yanks could try to get rid of Matsui the same way: WAIVERS.

Think about it: The Yanks put Matsui on waivers, Seattle claims him. Why? Cuz he’s a just a 2-year commitment, they’d mistakenly think they’d be stealing him from the Yanks, they need a full-time DH (since Raul Ibanez is their LF coming off a monster 2007 thus they won’t mess with him), and they’d love to have ALL THREE everyday player Japanese stars (Matsui, Ichiro, and Johjima).

  469. Andrea

Jim in CT–Tessie was actually the song I was thinking. I knew it had bagpipes and stuff. I finally had the brilliant idea of going on itunes and previewing the songs from the soundtrack of Fever Pitch until I found the one I was thinking of. I don’t know why it was bugging me so much, but it was. Thanks!

It sounds to me from Twins Territory that Santana will only be traded as a last resort and ONLY if twins brass doesn’t feel as if the team will contend this next year. If the Twins manage to sign Hunter (unlikely) or come up with decent options at LF, Third and CF (after losing Hunter) it’s likely the team will keep him next year despite inevitably losing him to free agency at the end of the year, and may try to unload him later in the season if things go downhill. With Franchise (Liriano) cleared for spring training and almost definitely coming back next year, if the Twins can field a team offensively that has even a hint of contending Santana likely won’t change uniforms this year.

There is absolutely nothing “official” about the Twins wanting to trade Santana this year. Neither he nor his agent has said they want a trade, just that if the right situation presented itself they would consider waiving the no trade clause. It is highly speculated that the “right situation” would involve a team offering the trade and including a contract extension in the trade, so it wouldn’t be a one year deal. It is highly likely he would ONLY consider a team that WILL contend next year, which means the list is short.

Of course from the MN perspective the Yankees ending up with Santana would solidify their place at the top of the most hated list and would make it clear that both the Yankees and the Red Sox will buy a world series no matter what it takes. Why farm when you can buy it?

  477. E-ROC

    Tony Pena has my vote.

  478. Brendon

Time for Rocktober/vember. Oh and Tony Pena has my vote too, he was able to turn the ROYALS around well atleast got them a winning record and he can handle a pitching staff too. Nothing against Girardi or Mattingly though.

  479. Doreen

Joe Girardi has his interview scheduled for this morning according to the Star Ledger. Pena is scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday, so Mattingly will probably have his interview tomorrow.

It’s sure been a tough couple of weeks for us Yankee fans. Why couldn’t the real Cleveland Indians have showed up 2 weeks ago?! You have to hand it to Boston, though, they really came on strong. You have to believe that not sending Lofton home to tie the game just left Cleveland flat. Nice to know the Yankees don’t have a monopoly on bad decisions. :)

  480. murphydog

Point one: Santana was a Rule 5 pick by Minnesota, so stuff your farm team b.s., son. Minny stole him from Houston, who had discovered him and developed him but decided to protect someone else on their 40 man roster in 2000. Johan went straight to the Minny MLB club, not spending any time in the Minny farm system.

Point two: Minnesota doesn’t have to trade Santana. They just refuse to pay him what he’s worth, hiding behind that small market crap. Use some of that MLB welfare and spend some money if you want to keep your ace.

  481. TimH

Andrea, “My Proud Mountains” by the late great Townes Van Zandt, performed by his son John T. Van Zandt on “Poet a tribute to Townes Van Zandt”. The best and most beautiful Colorado song I have ever heard. Was listening to it last evening after the Sox victory.

    My home is colorado
    With their proud mountains tall
    Where the rivers like gypsys
    Down her black canyons fall
Im a long, long way from denver
With a long way to go
So lend an ear to my singing
Cause Ill be back no more

I left as a young man
    Not full seventeen
    With nothin for company
But the wind and a dream
    bout all the fast ladies
    And livin Id find
When I left my proud mountains
    And rivers behind

    So I rolled and a-rambled
Like a leaf in the wind
Well, I found my fast ladies
    And some hard livin men
    Well, I sometimes went hungry
    With my pockets all bare
Lord, I sometimes had good luck
    With money to spare

I made me some friends, lord,
    That I wont soon forget
    Some are down under
    And some are rambling yet
    But as for me
    Im headed for home
    Back to high colorado
    Never more for to roam

So friends, when my time comes
    As surely it will
    You just carry my body
    Out to some lonesome hill
    And lay me down easy
    Where the cool rivers run
    With only my mountains
    tween me and the sun

    My home is colorado

  482. Victor the Predictor

A new manager will be in place by the end of this week with his coaching staff completed shortly after. The free agent players will need to know who they’ll be playing for before it becomes a sticking point with negotiations.

  483. Doreen

The Yankees have stated they would announce a new manager after the World Series. I guess, conceivably, they could hire one and not announce right away.

  484. jennifer

    * The Yankees find the idea of A-Rod’s concern over the managerial situation humorous, because despite the public appearance that Torre and Rodriguez had mended their relationship, some Yankees front-office execs believe that A-Rod has never gotten over being dropped to No.8 in the batting order in the 2006 playoffs against the Tigers.
“It’s interesting that Boras is suddenly making a big deal about who the new manager will be since A-Rod couldn’t stand Joe,” one Yankees official said.

    From daily news

Thats what I figured, I knew all this crap about how Alex loves Joe now was bs. He is probably happy he is gone, but his agent is now using this to get more money.

  485. randy l

“Minnesota doesn’t have to trade Santana. They just refuse to pay him what he’s worth, hiding behind that small market crap. Use some of that MLB welfare and spend some money if you want to keep your ace.”
    murpheydog-
one part of me would love to see the yankees pull a marlins-like auction of all their players and take down 5-6 teams that live off yankee money and scream about unfairness.
it won’t happen, but it would be fun to watch.
on a serious note, the yankees should have someone heading a team of lawyers who do nothing but fight the trend of yankee fan money flowing to other teams. even subtle things things, like when i watch the yankees on mlbtv on my computer or the mlb cable baseball package i have to get to see yankee games here on cape cod, generate huge amounts of money that goes into a pool that other teams get. i want to watch yes network and only the yankees, but yes network can’t sell a package directly to me. it should be between me and the yes network. but it isn’t. mlb sells me the yes signal with the yankees getting very little of it. so for me to watch yankee games ,i have to give money to othet teams through mlb. that sucks. i’m contributing to the pool of money that goes to other teams to beat the yankees. all yankee fan money should go directly to the yankees and stay with them.

  486. Jonathon

Yeah, but these “Yankee officials” are the same guys that kicked Torre out of the door. They are trying desparately to spin the good will of the fans and the media back into their corner.

They’ve found a new villian to direct the ire of the critics and that is Scott Boras, always an easy target.

The bottom-line is that it was very short-sighted to send the team into turmoil and uncertainty with such important free agent negotiations/contract extentions coming up.

And for what? What was gained by letting the Torre walk?

  487. jennifer

You don’t think the Yankees are right in what they say about Boras? Boras is a villan. When they first started talking about Torre maybe not coming back and how would ALex react. I thought he’d probably be happy. So now for his agent to turn this into he is sad Joe is gone is total bs. Yeah he wants to know who will replace him, but you know he wasn’t crying over the fact that Joe isn’t coming back.

  488. pat

“Some Yankees front office execs believe that A-Rod has never gotten over being dropped to No. 8 in the batting order in the 2006 playoffs against the Tigers. It’s interesting that Boras is suddenly making a bid deal about who the new manager will be since A-Rod couldn’t stand Joe,”

Cashman needs to change everyone in the front office’s and ownerships phone numbers. This is what I was talking about yesterday when I said the Yanks need a good PR person to muzzle everyone. If they really want to sign A-Rod to an extension, who in their right mind is going to put A-Rod on the defensive. A smart business person, if they know that to be true, keeps that info in their back pocket to use in negotiation with the player and not in a PR war in the media. This kind of thing shows players that while the old manager tried to diffuse media distraction to the team, management is will to create it up to win a PR war. Torre has been gone 4 days and the unnamed sources have already shown up.

  489. pat

    EDIT BUTTON

“management now is willing to create distraction to win a PR war.”

  490. Jonathon

Boras isn’t a villian. His job is to get the most money and best offer for his clients by convincing teams to see his point of view. He’s doing his job.

If you want to blame anyone, blame Yankee officials. They are responsible for creating a situation where Boras can float the idea that the current state of the Yankees is not in the best interest of his client.

They opened the door to this posturing.

  491. Doreen

From what I understand, Boras did not say Alex was sad that Torre left; what he is intimating is that with the “Yankees in flux” it might not be the best choice for Alex. It’s two different things.

  492. Jonathon

Good points Pat…why give Alex and reasons to opt out?

If I’m Alex this morning reading those quotes, I’m asking myself, “Is this how it’s going to be if I stay here? Unnamed Yankee officials taking shots at me through the media?”

    Again very short sighted approach.

Alex has the power here. He’s the one with the opt-out clause. He’s the one that can walk-away.

Why give him any reason to do that. The Yankee’s objectives are to make him stay and work out an extention of the current contract.

They should do everything they can to reach that objective. Taking shots at him through the media does not work to that objective.

  493. pat

    Jennifer

In their attempt to villify Boras, they have basically called A-Rod a liar because he has said he loved playing for Joe. Calling someone a liar is usually not a good way to start negotiations if you want to get the guy re-signed. Making statements in the media through unnamed sources is how the Bronx Zoo Yankees used to operate. It just looks bad.

  494. Doreen

It is in the best interest of the Yankees to come to relatively quick decision on who will be the manager, so that the “team in flux” characterization is not as dire. Any of the three candidates are no strangers to the Yankees organization, so there is some built-in stability to whatever the choice is. That takes away some of the bite of the argument Boras is trying to make.

  495. Doreen

And, we have no idea who this “Yankee Official” is. He could be the guy who sweeps the floors, for all we know. I seriously, seriously doubt that anyone with actual power in that organization is going to tell a newspaper reporter that Alex Rodriguez hated Joe Torre. I hate to jump to conclusions in these kinds of anonymous reports. They are designed to stir controversy. Plus I believe there is still a faction of the media who would love to see ARod leave for two reasons: one, they just don’t like him; and two, it’s a better story if he leaves than if he stays.

  496. jennifer

    Good points Doreen.

  497. TimH

There are more than a few beat writers at the Daily News who have nothing but comtemp for the Yankees. Without revealing a source this story could be contrived.

  498. Keith

Typical low class Boston bringing in a player under contract to an AL East team (Kevin Millar) to throw out the 1st pitch and announce their lineup on TV just because he played on the team that won it’s 1st championship in 86 years. Incredible.
No real surprise from a college cowtown not knowing how to act other than like little kids in a sandbox.

  499. pat

“That takes away some of the bite of the argument Boras is trying to make.”

Actually it makes his argument for him. Boras said (I think on Saturday) that manager was only 1 of the questions. How the team would be run in the future now that the sons were taking on more reseponsibility was also an issue. If a guy who is always in the media spotlight for crossing the street, now gets put in the media spotlight by the people who are running the team, if it was me, it would raise even more questions and not answer them.

“I seriously, seriously doubt that anyone with actual power in that organization is going to tell a newspaper reporter that Alex Rodriguez hated Joe Torre”

Don’t be so sure. That’s something George would have said in the past. George always got a pass on stupid media remarks; It was just George being George. Some of those trying to fill George’s shoes whether it be a son or a reviled team president are not going to get the same pass and need to be more careful in what they say and to who now.

“Typical low class Boston bringing in a player under contract to an AL East team (Kevin Millar) to throw out the 1st pitch and announce their lineup on TV just because he played on the team that won it’s 1st championship in 86 years. Incredible.”

I thought just the opposite and that it was great the Red Sox didn’t just ignore Millar’s contributions because he’s wearing another uniform. They acknowledged their past…and did so within major league regulations.

  501. LathamJoe

“I thought just the opposite and that it was great the Red Sox didn’t just ignore Millar’s contributions because he’s wearing another uniform. ”

Yeah, I could just imagine your reaction (along with others) if Johnny Damon threw out the first pitch last night!
I have no problem with former teammates supporting each other…do it in private, not on National TV!

  502. Phil - 27 in '08

Actually, it provided real insight into the fact that these guys develop friendships and bonds and are not just business resources. The Yanks – Sox rivalry would complicate Damon doing that…but the O’s are a different story. Hence why I enjoyed seeing it.

Peter Angelos has ruined the O’s and makes it difficult for anyone to develop loyalty to the organization anymore.

  503. Syracuse Yankees Fan

The Big question is, with Johnny Damon’s arm, would his throw make it to the plate???

  504. desti(NY) 2008

By the end of the General Manager’s meetings in early December, Yankee fans will have every reason to feel good about next season. Brian Cashman has much work to do but this offseason has already started off not being a bore.
