Bobby V off the list
Cross another name off your checklist. Hank Steinbrenner told reporters in Tampa today that the Yankees would not be interviewing Bobby Valentine.
The Tampa Trio is at Legends Field today along with Randy Levine and Brian Cashman. Joe Girardi has been in with them for about two hours.
If there is a fourth candidate, it’s unclear who that will be. Boston pitching coach John Farrell is a hot name in the game but I can’t see the Yankees waiting until after the World Series to meet with him.
In other news, Joe Torre will be on HBO tomorrow night getting interviewed by Bob Costas.

First!
Does Tony Pena count as a minority interview, as per the request of MLB, Pete? or does it have to be an African-American?
Pena’s name counts for the minority interview requirement.
wow, I never thought of farrell…he could be good.
Pete I still don’t know why Tony Pena isn’t viewed as a stronger candidate than Girardi. He already has the experience in the AL and can control that locker room. Just look what he did in 2003 w/ the Royals
w/ this as his best players
http://city-royals-fans.com/team.htm
P.S. if the Red Sox lose Farrell pack it up because he has been a rock for thier BP management
Brendon ? there’s another guy w/ my name ? welcome I guess..
Pete – I don’t understand this notion you keep returning to that Mattingly is basically owed the job and that he didn’t “come out of retirement” to be stiffed by the Yankees. Was he planning on doing nothing for the next 40 years? If he wants to manage he should get some experience first. Hiring the guy because he’s a member of the “Yankee family” and beloved by the fans is silly. He’s simply not qualified for the job.
well yeah but I’m a brendon not a brandon but close enough lol
Pena is the token minority candidate to please Seling. Nothing more, nothing less. Keep him as 1B coach.
Please give the job to Girardi!!!
indeed we almost have the same name but i’m witn an E not an A
If the Yankees wanted to interview another former Royals manager, Hal McRae would be a funny surprise candidate. He had one of the greatest tirades of all time. He would definitely satisfy the people who want a more emotional manager.
Brandon- I also think that Pena would do a wonderful job. That performance in ’03 also looks better when considering that the Royals’ front office is bumbling and not really committed to winning. Tony would not have to worry about that in New York. He would be a very good fit.
The inexperience factor is way overrated. No manager has experience until he gets his first shot.
Mattingly also might be their best chance on keeping the team together (ie: Posada, Mo, and A-Rod) because they cannot afford to lose those guys.
Jeff, Tony Pena should is not just a minority guy he can really manage and should be considered as the high choice right now
I agree with Pete I don’t think Donnie came out of retirement not to be the manager. Say that Donnie isn’t ready and they hire someone else and he wins 4 world series in the next 5 years. That manager will not be fired anytime soon so then what is Donnie the bench coach for the next however many years. I can’t see it working that way. I think he will get the job. I’m not saying he should but I think he will.
Brendon w/ an “E” – yeh I know
JDawg – I couldn’t agree anymore w/ Tony Pena
Giuseppe – Tony Pena would also be a guy that can influence Jorge staying, Georgy staying and Alex, the players love him
This is not the most rational line of thinking I admit, but one of my biggest reasons for not wanting Mattingly is that I cant stand to watch him fail and (gasp) potentially gets fired as the next manager. As much as I love him I’m not very confident that he will be that great as a manager…yet.
Brandon,
Pena isn’t a serious candidate for the job. He fills the minority requirement because of MLB rules.
If he doesn’t get another managerial job somewhere, I think he’ll be the new bench coach under Mattingly.
Yankee Rican: We don’t do that Mickey Mouse “First” garbage on this blog. Go do it somewhere else.
Giuseppe Franco, how is a manager of the year winner not considered a strong candidate ? He isn’t just a minority fill in, I guarantee someone comes knocking Tony’s door but I believe he stays here no matter what.
Thank God.
Brandon,
He’s not a strong candidate for the Yankee job. He could be for someone else.
The next Yankee manager will be Mattingly or Girardi.
That MOTY award probably has very little if any influence on this decision.
Who would consider Bobby Valentine as a serious candidate ? He’d show up at Legends Field with his well documeted disguise trying to humor himself into the job.
Giuseppe, I’m still waiting for a reason why he wouldn’t be a strong choice for the Yankees (are the Yankees all the sudden racist ?)
why should Girardi (who is my 2nd choice) and Mattingly the automatic in guys ?
You guys who are posting Mattingly for manager with Girardi as bench coach are nuts. That won’t happen. It also won’t happen Girardi as manager and Mattingly as bench coach. One of those guys will get the job and the other will go away.
Mattingly won’t stay as bench coach under Girardi (do you actually think Girardi would want to groom eventual his replacement) and vice versa.
Girardi still might get the Oriole job if he doesn’t get the Yankee job.
As for Pena, his best chance, I think, is as Mattingly’s bench coach. I don’t think they would make him manager. I’m not sure if Girardi would want him on his staff.
As for Bobby V, THANK GOD THEY DIDN’T HIRE HIM. That would have made me cry. The guy, while astute about baseball, is a buffoon. It’s not about his team. It’s about Bobby V. We don’t need another circus act in town.
Farrell is just the hot name. Skinner was the hot name before Cleveland choked and he held Lofton. Farrell strikes me as a guy who “looks the part” and will get over other candidates because of that. That said, I can’t see the Yankees hiring the Boston pitching coach to manage their final season.
I hope it’s Girardi. If it’s Mattingly I won’t be mad, but I’d prefer Girardi.
“The inexperience factor is way overrated. No manager has experience until he gets his first shot.”
This statement might apply to say the Pirates, but we’re talking the Yankees here.
*final season in Yankee Stadium* I meant, not final season, unless I’m predicting the end of the Yankees next year.
Anyone know what the percentage of candidates are that have to be a minority?
If Mattingly gets it, another thought for bench coach – Don Baylor.
Someone mentioned a couple of days ago that Girardi had contacted Paulie about being on his coaching staff if he gets the job. Was that for real and if so, would it be as bench coach?
IMO, I would choose Girardi over Mattingly. Donny’s demeaner reminds me alot of Torre(too laid back). We need a fired up Manager to make a change. If not, why didnt we just stick with Torre. This team needs a new voice, approach and attitude. Girardi or Pena fit that mold better.
Paulie said that he and Girardi had talked, but he didn’t say it was anything formal. Just shooting the breeze. Paulie said he couldn’t think of anywhere better to be coaching.
G.R., that’s the 1st I ever heard of that, though I wouldn’t doubt it
“Girardi still might get the Oriole job if he doesn’t get the Yankee job.”
Is he back in the running for that? I thought he already passed on that.
I don’t think Girardi contacted Paulie. I believe that O’Neil was asked if he would be interested in being on Girardi’s staff and he said yes.
Wasn’t this a convo between him and that a-hole Michael Kay? Now that’s someone whose contract should not be renewed!!!!!!!!
I can’t see there being a fourth candidate, at all, at this point.
Unless, of course, Stephen Colbert wants to throw his name in the ring.
Seriously, though, anyone other than Girardi or Mattingly at this point would have to be considered a dark horse. I’m a fan of taking someone from within the organization if possible…
“Girardi still might get the Oriole job if he doesn’t get the Yankee job.”
What the hell are you talking about? They made Trembley the full-time manager.
“Wasn’t this a convo between him and that a-hole Michael Kay? Now that’s someone whose contract should not be renewed!!!!!!!!”
You are correct Laura.
Drew,
Thanks! I wouldn’t mind seeing that happen if Joe gets the job.
“Someone mentioned a couple of days ago that Girardi had contacted Paulie about being on his coaching staff if he gets the job. Was that for real and if so, would it be as bench coach?”
GR – the rumor is (key word being rumor) he asked Paulie about being hitting coach.
sox are unlikely to give yanks permission to interview farrell (just as the yanks denied the sox permission to talk to stick michael a few years ago)
Kevin Long should remain the hitting coach. He does a great job.
Could the reason be that the reason Valentine isn’t being considered is because he said he wasn’t giving up his job in Japan…
Is it me or has Michael Kay seemingly gone over board regarding Joe Torre and his rejection on the Yankee offer. Listening to last Friday’s podcast and Kay seems a little offended that Torre rejected the offer and that so many people agree with Torre.
Does he really feel this way or does he fear losing his job since the Evil Sith Lord Levine is listening?
“Pepper Brooks
Is it me or has Michael Kay seemingly gone over board regarding Joe Torre and his rejection on the Yankee offer”
Absolutely. I was talking to my wife about it. It sounds like he’s playing more than devil’s advocate. I doubt he fears for his job. For one thing, his radio personna and his TV personna are different. He kisses ass on YES and is quick to criticize on his radio show.
well gotta go. but before I go
*TONY PENA*
“Kevin Long should remain the hitting coach. He does a great job.”
Especially if Arod comes back Kevin Long won’t be going anywhere.
im still hoping for undead zombie manager Billy Martin, who before each game digs his way out of the ground in monument park!
yeah. just in time for halloween.
Michael Kay aside, it’s not a stretch to think that Joe Girardi would want Paulie O’Neill as his bench coach. They’ve been good friends since their playing days.
A good injection of Girardi / O’Neill fire in the dugout could be just what the doctor ordered. It would never be confused with boring.
Tony Pena has already commited to coming back whether he gets the top job or not.
It’s still bothersome in Mattingly saying last week that he didn’t feel he was ready to manage. It may or may not have been said so not to offend Torre but how can those feelings change so suddenly without having managed ?
Drew: Regarding Girardi and the O’s…Baltimore papers reported O’s “sources” as saying that Angelos is unhappy with Trembley and still want him for the manager’s job.
That’s what the hell they were talking about.
“Regarding Girardi and the O’s…Baltimore papers reported O’s “sourcesâ€? as saying that Angelos is unhappy with Trembley and still want him for the manager’s job.
That’s what the hell they were talking about.”
Bizarre. I don’t see Girardi changing his mind on that. Angelos is an idiot. If Girardi doesn’t get the Yankees job he should wait. Dodgers may fire Little.
My only concern with a Girardi/Paulie paring is that I don’t know how Mo, Posada or Jeter would feel being under those guys. I mean, they just played with them. Or it could be the opposite. Having those guys back might remind them of the good ‘ol days when the Yankees didn’t lose in the first round of the playoffs. Maybe they would look forward to it. Time will tell.
A guy who folded under the pressure in Kansas City (with some off the field shenanigans thrown in for good measure) is gonna get a crack at first bill on the NY Yankees? Are there actually people who believe that?
If there’s a more embarrassing and humiliating policy in professional sports than Selig’s “Interview a Token Minority” charade, I’ve not heard of it.
Why are owners not required to interview any female candidates? Or disabled candidates? Or transgender candidates?
Think Angelos is the “Al Davis” of baseball.
While the manager debate continues, it is apparent that without a #1 starter, 2 middle relievers, the manager is not going to matter.
i love the yankees, but i must be honest and say that i think don mattingly would be a terrible choice for yankees manager. I just do. Was my child hood idol but i do not feel he has the requisite skills necessary.
Whoever the manager is is going to have a tough time — if they win 95 games and don’t win the world series, there are going to be questions about the benefits of making the switch… I think Mattingly was right about the pressures on the next guy taking this job…
randyhater:
“Why are owners not required to interview any female candidates? Or disabled candidates? Or transgender candidates?”
When will they have the first disabled candidate? You don’t remember Billy Martin?
Seriously, you gotta give these moguls some time. Remember, MLB didn’t get the concept of blacks being the same as whites until 1947 and then only grudgingly. If things go at about their usual pace, figure you should see the first female manager by 2047 with the rest to follow a few years later.
murphydog –
You’ll see a deaf, dumb and blind manager before you see a female. As long as that deaf, dumb and blind manager once played ball and was someone’s folk hero, he has a shot at the job. As long as there is no professional women’s baseball league, you will NEVER, ever see a female manager.
(And it should be noted, that even when they DID have a PFBL, they were managed by men.)
It is what it is.
Phil 27…way to be friendly.
There are ways to convey information without being a jerk.
Trembley is on the thinnest of thin ice in Baltimore. The second they give him an extension for next season, the team goes on to lose like 30 in a row or something. It was horrendous and the Baltimore people already know they are still in a manager hunt.
Girardi turned down the O’s probably because he didn’t want take over the team in the middle of the season and would like a spring training so he could build his team from scratch. That coupled with the fact that he has a legit shot to get the Yankee job was enough reason for him to say no to a mid-season replacement. There aren’t many mid-season replacement managers that hang around too long. They’re already talking like the dude in Seattle who took over mid-season better win fast or else.
If the Yanks pass on Girardi, that would be enough motivation to go take the O’s job and make the Yanks regret it.
I hope he gets the job. I think having that bit of toughness and grit he has, coupled with his obvious intelligence is a good thing for this team. I have a feeling a Girardi managed Yankee team isn’t going to lead the league in batters who are hit by the opposing team. Just a hunch.
I go along with the idea of Joe Girardi taking over. If they didn’t want Joe T.why go with IMHO a similar type like inexperienced Don Mattingly? There seems to be a call for a more-fired up Yankee Manager and that would be Joe Girardi! And Paul O’Neil on the bench would be a huge plus and bonus for Man. Girardi and the Yanks. I was hoping that Paul would become a full-time YES Yankee broadcaster because he is absolutely THE BEST COMMENTATOR IN THE GAME ! But, I feel he would be a great Yankee coach. Are we sure that he wants to put on the stripes again???
