Girardi talks about his interview

t1_joe_girardi.jpgIn a smart move, the Yankees made Joe Girardi available to the beat writers via a conference call that finished about 10 minutes ago.

Why smart? The Yankees can use the call as a tool to see how Girardi handles the media. It’s also reasonable to suggest we might have come up with an original question or two. Several teams have done this in recent years.

Here is the audio from the call:

I thought Girardi handled himself quite well. His personality is a legitimate question given how his tenure with the Marlins ended. But he seemed to rise above that issue during the call and was pretty honest about the situation.

It’s not a surprise to me that Girardi had a good showing with the media. He probably chalked up his year with the Marlins as a great learning experience. I’m sure that he will do a terrific job with the Yankees if he does become the manager. He made some mistakes in Florida, but one of the keys to being truly successful is being able to bounce back from adversity. I think that Joe can do just that.

  2. Dewey October 22nd, 2007 at 7:31 pm

    good question, pete.

  3. Girardi October 22nd, 2007 at 7:33 pm

    Cashman is >this

  4. Girardi October 22nd, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Cashman is *this* close to having my firstborn named after him.

And I do mean “Cashman”, not “Brian”.

  5. Love Bernie October 22nd, 2007 at 7:35 pm

Thanks for the audio Pete. You’re right. A good move by the Yankees. You said other teams have done this as well, in the recent past. Kind of like an audition in addition to an interview. I like it.

  6. Mauro October 22nd, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Who were all the other people that interviewed Girardi for the job? He mentioned a few names i didn’t recognize

  7. Marc October 22nd, 2007 at 7:47 pm

Joe Girardi should manage the Yankees next year if they know what’s good for them.

  8. Jimbo October 22nd, 2007 at 7:52 pm

I just hope if Joe gets the job that Donnie stays on as a coach. Although that might be awkward.

One thing that Joe has that Donnie does not: the hardware. I wonder if he wore one of his three rings to the interview?

  9. pat October 22nd, 2007 at 7:53 pm

    Pete
I like Girardi and think he would be a good manager. Only thing I would have liked to have heard him say is he thinks in game management was also one of his stengths. Saying relationships as a strength is all good but that was Torre’s main strength. He should have cut himself his own path a little bit more because he’s not going to be able to out-Torre Joe. Very poised and articulate; hopeful that would hold up after the first front office salvo or 4 game losing streak.

  10. brendon October 22nd, 2007 at 8:08 pm

I was never a fan of Girardi out of Mattingly and Pena but he sounded like a professional and one who could lead the Yankees. I agree though, if Girardi gets the job i hope the two (Pena and Mattingly stay), it would help the team.

  11. jennifer October 22nd, 2007 at 8:19 pm

I enjoyed listening to Joe’s imput during the broadcasts this year. He would talk about what he would do in certain situations.

And I don’t think he would manage the same (with the iron fist) that he did in Fla. He will manage to his team. He will have more vets and some rookies. I think he will do a great job.

  12. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 22nd, 2007 at 8:27 pm

    Joe has my vote.

  13. MiketheMike October 22nd, 2007 at 8:32 pm

Thank you Pete for giving us this look at the Q&A you beat writers get and giving us the unfiltered NEWS. It is very helpful to us LOYAL Yankee fans, we are fans of the TEAM not the players or managers or owners. No matter what I will always love the Yankees, 40 wins or 110 wins.

  14. Boston Dave October 22nd, 2007 at 8:34 pm

Joe has my vote as well but I really don’t know much about Mattingly and his knowledge or what his coaching style would be.

Does anyone have the sense that Posada, Pettite, or Rivera would prefer Mattingly? I wonder if Cashman would even speak to those guys and get their opinions or input. Probably not but it might not be a bad idea.

  15. Mark October 22nd, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Joe Girardi handled himself professionally and upbeat after an afternnon of grilling. The 7th game of a World Series might be easier.
    He’ll be an excellent choice.

  16. Jeep Girl October 22nd, 2007 at 8:51 pm

Gotta go with Joe!!! Great question Pete.

  17. grafxkid October 22nd, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Pete, thanks for upping this for us! I agree with the majority here, Joe has my vote. I definitely enjoyed listening to his insights during games this year. Like Jennifer mentioned, he always said what he would do if put in the situation at hand. Joe’s no dummy, he knew what he was doing while commentating and he definitely would be successful in managing the Yankees.

  18. mel October 22nd, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Girardi sounds smart as a whip. I wish his last name was Steinbrenner.

Here’s a small sample of Hank Steinbrenner’s “eloquent” verbal skills:

“I don’t want to get too much into that, but, we’re not stupid,” he said. (reacting to a question re: Girardi’s tenure with the Marlins)

“We want him to stay and I would think he would want to stay. We’ve made it clear if he opts out, goodbye,” Steinbrenner said. (on the Yankees’ position on the A-rod situation)

In unrelated news, Mariano was on Sirius radio and sounded, from his quotes, very patient and not at all contentious as his anonymous “friend” implied.

  19. Horace October 22nd, 2007 at 9:00 pm

    Peter,

You’re really a scumbag. The way you took personal shots at the Yankees front office, you shouldn’t even have access. You’re a disgrace to journalism.

  20. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:01 pm

No matter how much the media would like to pretend otherwise, the Yankees have handled the entire Torre affair smartly, so it’s no surprise that they have continued to do so.

  21. Andrea October 22nd, 2007 at 9:03 pm

What’s with someone coming on here at least once per thread and bashing Peter?

  22. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 9:07 pm

gee Horace who’s getting personal now?

  23. mel October 22nd, 2007 at 9:07 pm

What a messy, ugly divorce it’s turning out to be. Yankees made a half-hearted gesture, Joe spurned their attempts, Joe says goodbye with some digs at the Yankees, stupid Steinbrenner son goes off on Torre saying he’s an ingrate, Joe will go on Costas tomorrow to give his “side of the story”. Sad, sad. And it’s always the kids that get caught in the middle. They should’ve both just taken time to cool off.

But, prospective step-daddy Joe Girardi looks ready to step into this dysfunctional family and run it with a firm hand.

  24. Joe G fan October 22nd, 2007 at 9:08 pm

There is no way that if Joe G gets the managers job will Mattingly stay. Would lead to too much second guessing and you could see Joe G looking over his shoulder at the first five game losing streak.

  25. murphydog October 22nd, 2007 at 9:11 pm

    Horace:

    Who asked you?

  26. mel October 22nd, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    Joe G Fan,

I wonder if that’s a question in the interview. “Would you be o.k. if we asked that the other two main candidates remain on the coaching staff?”

  27. Mark October 22nd, 2007 at 9:13 pm

Time for your milk & cookies, Horace and I guarantee Peter won’t serve them to you.

  28. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 9:15 pm

    most impressive.

I hope he considers SJ44 as pitching coach, dr acula as bench coach, and yankee chick to work with kim jones ;)

  29. hmmm October 22nd, 2007 at 9:18 pm

“Yankees made a half-hearted gesture, Joe spurned their attempts, Joe says goodbye with some digs at the Yankees, stupid Steinbrenner son goes off on Torre saying he’s an ingrate”

except he never actually called him an ingrate.

  30. Horace October 22nd, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Do people think it’s acceptable that Peter took a shot at a guy for being married to Steinbrenner’s daughter?

  31. gayle October 22nd, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Mauro – I think he said the following people were in the interview, the first one not with the Steinbrenners. I may have missed a few one of the names got garbled: Once again it makes me VERY happy that Stick is involved in all of these meetings both with Torre as well as the new manager candidates

    Brian Cashman
    Jean Afterman
    Mark Newman
    Stick Michael
    Billy Eppler
    Damon Oppenheimer

  32. murphydog October 22nd, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Very smart of the Steinbrenners – - or whoever really came up with the idea of this interaction with the media. They are building transparency into the process. That’s new for the Steinbrenners and very interesting. Instead of them leaking it out, they are letting Girardi do his own talking.

I’m sure Girardi made a great impression during the interview, perhaps more of an impression than the Tampa Trio expected. I’m not sure the sons really knew or interacted with Girardi prior to this. Maybe he won them over.

  33. jennifer October 22nd, 2007 at 9:22 pm

yeah it doesn’t sound as bad as the “friend” made it out to be

    * Bogusch: “What does this mean for you, Mariano? Obviously, everyone knows your contract status. Do you need to know who the Yankee manager is before you start talking to [Yankees GM] Brian Cashman?”
Rivera: “Not really. Not really. I know the Yankees are going to do whatever they think is best for the team. I always respect them for that. The Yankees always have given the opportunity to give us the best everything, the best players, the best coaching staff. They always tried to do that. I don’t think it has to do nothing, with me, in terms of signing with the Yankees.”

  34. murphydog October 22nd, 2007 at 9:23 pm

    Horace:

Let it go, Horace. Wait… you’re Swindal himself, aren’t you?

  35. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:24 pm

“stupid Steinbrenner son goes off on Torre saying he’s an ingrate, ”

As if. There is nothing that Hank said that wasn’t true, unlike Torre, who told falsehoods in his press conference, e.g., that the incentives were in an insult when most of the contracts he signed with the Yankees had incentives.

  36. Ellen October 22nd, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Did someone forget to give Horace his meds or something?

  37. Jaewon October 22nd, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Can someone explain to me what Joe did at the end of his time with Florida, and why he got fired in the first place? He took them from being a rebuilding time, with a future but nothing now (like the Devil Rays) to being a contender. Now they’re a nothing team and they don’t have too bright of a future, with the exception of some players, one being Hanley. Before Girardi they were nothing, after him they were nothing, but the one year they were with him they almost made the playoffs.

  38. murphydog October 22nd, 2007 at 9:26 pm

Hey… three cheers for Peter. Who else gets you the audio, like you had press creds? (If Pete keeps posting clips like this, I’m beginning to feel like I’ll make it to pitchers and catchers after all). Thanks, Pete.

  39. Joe M October 22nd, 2007 at 9:27 pm

I would like to be able to turn down 5 million give me a good bench coach & I could manage the Yankees

  40. DMan October 22nd, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Girardi is a long shot.. I think we all know that..

Hes a completely different manager then Pena or Mattingly would be..

He’d really change the attitude and the feeling around the team and the organization..

Is that a good or a bad thing? Who knows..

  41. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 9:28 pm

    Gayle-

he also talked/me the The Boss and chatted about football.

  42. Jimmy the Saint October 22nd, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Horace:
Get a grip. Lots of class you show by insulting the host of the blog. If you can’t act like an adult, take your trash somewhere else.

  43. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 22nd, 2007 at 9:30 pm

    Joha: What about me, mate?

    Can I like be…I don’t know…they don’t have cheerleaders in baseball!

  44. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:31 pm

The Marlins owner, Jeffrey Loria, hired Girardi without consulting with the GM, Larry Beinfast. It led to miscommunication from the outset.

  45. murphydog October 22nd, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    Joe M:

We’re moving on. So is Torre. Join us.

Oh and no, Joe M. You couldn’t manage the Yankees, not with Huggins, McCarthy, Stengel, Billy Martin and Torre sitting right next to you.

  46. asburyboss October 22nd, 2007 at 9:34 pm

was somebody asking about Girardi’s “in game management”? you serious? he was a great catcher in his day…how mnay of those don’t know what is going on with the game? silly.

Girardi is the guy I hope gets it…he has a lot to learn, but he was Posada’s mentor, he nursed Mo’s move to closer, and he’s already got a good resume…plus, if he doesn’t he is gone for good.

  47. Enter Sandman October 22nd, 2007 at 9:34 pm

I can’t be convinced that Joe Girardi isn’t a serious candidate with all the top names within the organization present to exchange thoughts.
It certainly wasn’t a quickie type of meeting. All things sound like Joe is due for a 2nd sit down before all is said and done.

  48. RJPinstripes October 22nd, 2007 at 9:35 pm

I want Joe Girardi at the helm. He will be a different style for the Yanks! And, yes, we need a new voice with a different style running the show! GO WITH JOE !

  49. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Girard is not a long shot.

  50. MJL October 22nd, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Can we please hold off on all the “votes” for Joe? The other interviews haven’t even occurred yet, and this conference call didn’t seem like a very difficult test to pass, thus it should have little influence on who you choose to support. I can see all of the decision-makers falling in love with Mattingly, or Pena going in there and wowing everybody. It’s way too early so everybody relax.

  51. myrtlebeachfan October 22nd, 2007 at 9:46 pm

    http://forums.nyyfans.com/show.....did=106989

    interesting thought.

anyone know or think they know the reason?

  52. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:47 pm

    MJL,

Why do you care? Our votes mean nothing.

  53. Andrea October 22nd, 2007 at 9:48 pm

Rebecca: I want to be a bullpen catcher. Sure, it’s not glamorous, but we get to hang out with Mo and all the other pitchers on their start days, and we get to catch home run balls. And we don’t have to deal with the media.

  54. john scott October 22nd, 2007 at 9:49 pm

I’d like Girardi because I like catchers as mahagers and I think he’d set a different tone for the team. Do you think Damon and Abreu would come in to the next season out of shape if the new manager wasn’t a “player’s manager” lik Joe? I think a bit more discipline and aggressiveness are what they need-especially with the younger players coming in.

  55. gayle October 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

One thing I respect most and I think shows somewhat how he will deal with players and the media is that to this day he has refused to air the dirty laundry that occurred with his end in Florida in public. He has taken the high road when he could very easily go out there and give his side of the story.

  56. Billy Martin in heaven October 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

Joe Girardi….my kind of guy. It’s about time this team had a manager with fire in his belly like I did. If I could only get through to George, I’d give him a piece of my mind.

  57. grafxkid October 22nd, 2007 at 9:52 pm

sorry to interupt the Girardi talk, but I just read Joe Torre will be on the Monday, October 29th show of Letterman.

    as you were…

  58. Joe from Long Island October 22nd, 2007 at 9:53 pm

As a Yankee fan, I think we would do quite well with either Joe Girardi or Donnie. (As long as the pitching holds up.)

It will be a tough call.

  59. jennifer October 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 pm

And I read that the book will come out in time for Christmas.

  60. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 9:54 pm

    Torre on Letterman?

Yet another example of how the Yankees made Joe Torre.

  61. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 9:56 pm

    Who’s Joe Torre?

I mean really, that’s so last week.

ps Nothing against Mattingly, but who has low expectations for tomorrow’s clip? I do.

  62. gayle October 22nd, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Forget about Letterman he will be on tomorrow night HBO Real Sports being interviewed by Bob Costas.

Like I have said before I really just want us all to move on I am getting really sick and tired of the whole Torre woe is me theme. We can all agree that it ended badly BUT Joe Torre got just as much out of the Yankees did the past 12 years as the Yankees got out of him. It is time to move on.

  63. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 22nd, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Joe G has had my vote over Donnie M for a while now, so this is nothing new for me.

    Andrea: Nice choice!

Hmm…I’d like to be the third base coach, I think. I wouldn’t be any good cos I’d wave everyone home and be like ‘SCORE! SCORE!’, but that’s besides the point :-P

  64. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Rebecca: I think YOU should replace Michael “pessimist” Kay.

Andrea: You should be minor league pitching coordinator, so you could hang out with the Bookie Bombers.

  65. susan mullen October 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Joe Girardi is extremely smart–remember he was in the broadcast booth a few months ago when Farnsworth was pitching, and he actually predicted something Farnsworth would do–and he did it! It was something bad like overthrowing to first base to try and stop a stolen base.

  66. Chicago Dave October 22nd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

I’ll go with Joe…If for nothing else but the shameless plug for Northwestern…of which both Joe and myself are alums! HA!!!

Honestly, though, with all the hype about how much the Steinbrenners love Mattingly, I’d be absolutely shocked if anyone but Donnie got the job. If it is someone else, it has to be Girardi. I kind of feel bad for Pena…I have a feeling that his interview is really for show more than anything else.

  67. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 22nd, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Joha: Hah! I’m afraid my play by play wouldn’t be very good, though…I’m a Jersey girl and I curse like one, too!

  68. MJL October 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

    Whoa -

Thanks for making my point for me.

  69. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Here’s the problem with hiring Mattingly: It would be harder to fire him than Torre, and that’s a pretty big risk for a guy who has never managed a game.

  70. Chicago Dave October 22nd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Speaking of “player’s managers,” I fear Donnie would be way too lax with the veterans; whereas it seems like Girardi is willing to get in anyone’s face at any time. Point in favor of Girardi…

  71. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

    MJL,

Wasn’t your point that you cared?

  72. Dee October 22nd, 2007 at 10:17 pm

It’s not an apple to apple comparison but Girardi is usually a lot more articulate and confident in the booth than on this audio clip. I wonder if this media Q&A thing caught him off guard.

Still Joe G gets my vote. Pena second.

    And Pete’s question was great.

Who was the male voice running this Q&A other than “Kimberly”? Was that Levine or Yankees PR guy?

  73. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 pm

just had a thought, Torre sound book a whine a thon on the “Ellen” show.

  74. Andrea October 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Joha: I dunno, it’s a good idea in theory, but i don’t know much about pitching! I’d be like “um, great breaking ball” and they’d be like “that was a curve, coach,” and I’d make them run laps for defying me, then go back to the books to try to learn the difference. But you may be on to something!

  75. Justin October 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Where did Girardi go? Northwestern? Penn? I remember how they always mention the handful of top schools some of the Yanks went to (Mussina, Ohlendorf – go pton!), and Girardi seems to come up in this discussion to, but I can’t remember.

  76. Joha October 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    Andrea-

_and I’d make them run laps for defying me_

for a moment I thought you were going to say “I’d make them do lap dances for defying me”

  77. G.R. October 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Thanks Pete! I think he did a great job answering questions on the spot like that. He’s definitely got my vote, in case it counts!

  78. Bob Michaels October 22nd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

  81. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 22nd, 2007 at 10:34 pm

  82. Bob October 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

Well, I say this. It’s been a while since we went through manager change and at least this seems to be a much improved process than the way it used to be.

  83. MJL October 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

No, my point was that I don’t care about anyone’s points, and it’s especially ridiculous when people make them a day into the interview process.

  84. MJL October 22nd, 2007 at 10:41 pm

    *Votes I should say.

  85. MJL October 22nd, 2007 at 10:42 pm

    *Votes, I should say.

  86. Jay Yankees October 22nd, 2007 at 10:44 pm

Tony P would be GREAT if given the chance. Plus the fact that he’s hispanic/latino would be a great plus for NY. His qualifications alone make him a great choice, but he’d be great for the city as a diversity candidate and the young kids (Cano,Melky, Veres and also the young pitchers) would all respect him and play hard for him.

I also like Joe Girardi. Classy and intelligent guy. I loved how he managed/pushed the kids in FL with a shoestring budget.

I would NOT like to see Mattingly. I loved him as a player, but I hate the fact he’s never managed at all, and I just don’t see him as confident. I think he’d struggle with the pressure/media/expectations. Maybe he needs to start managing in a much smaller market first.
    Just my two cents.

  87. DMan October 22nd, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Hah, this blog entry has been rated PG-13 =P

  91. Andrea October 22nd, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Well that’s sad. I was curious what the counts were.

  92. gianthinker October 22nd, 2007 at 11:19 pm

I wouldnt be mad with Girardi as our Head Coach for a second as long as he keeps Mattingly as his Bench Coach. I actually think that would be a good thing for Mattingly in multiple ways.

  93. whoa October 22nd, 2007 at 11:22 pm

“No, my point was that I don’t care about anyone’s points, and it’s especially ridiculous when people make them a day into the interview process.”

    Why do you hate freedom?

  94. Mike R. October 22nd, 2007 at 11:27 pm

Listening to that call really makes me feel like an insider. I am very impressed with Girardi. I can’t wait to hear the calls after Pena’s and Donnie’s interviews. Should be great stuff.

BTW. George King can send a text message but *1 gives him trouble? What’s up with that?

  95. CaptainsCorner October 22nd, 2007 at 11:30 pm

Girardi once did an interview with Michael “I know everything” Kay and it was right after a series with Boston where Ortiz and Manny feasted on our pitching and he said I would make them both eat dirt if I was the Yank manager. If he gets the job I want to see him stand up to his words. But I definitely think they are going to hire Mattingly. I think they will want to give him a chance and wouldnt think it is fair if he isnt and just let go. They would not have a rookie and 2 year manager on the bench together.

  96. Viking Coach October 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 pm

Girardi pissed off the owner in Florida because he told him to sit down and shut the F&^% up and stop yelling at the umpires about balls and strikes. Thats what got him fired. According to someone that sits in the booth(the other cathcer)its a done deal its going to be Girardi

  97. Dave October 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 pm

I vote for Joe – he has proven he can manage, he is extremely intelligent and articulate on YES, he seems like he can confront players when need be, he is a catcher and has a firm grasp on the game and he seems like he could be a very good in game manager. Mattingly is the quite the opposite. His personality is almost identical to Torre’s and i thought management is looking for a change of pace. Why firing one Torre just to bring in personality-wise his twin brother. The guys is anything but articulate. He has a firm grasp on hitting and fielding but i dont think he knows the first thing about helping our pitchers and with an all star lineup and the majority of our starting rotation and bullpen under the age of 30, I think we need a manager that can help the pitching staff. He seems very non-confrontational and takes on that father figure act like Torre. The guy just doesnt seem to know how to handle the media very well.

Mike and the maddog have been complete morons all week. They spend hours discussing how they KNOW Randy Levine is running the team now because he made the conference calling concerning Torre (not cashman or the steinbrenners.) So they believe if the team falls apart next yr it is on randy levines head. Those two have their heads stcuk so far up Torre and Cashmans $#$ its amazing they ever see the light of day. They dont blame cashman for anything – now that Torre is gone and George is pretty much gone from the decision making process they immediately have to find a new scapegoat not named Cashman. And they talk at legnth this week about how it was an embarassment for the franchise to offer Torre an incentive based contract and to make him wait a week before making him an offer. They dont realize that many of his contracts were incentive based? They dont realize that it takes time to make a critical decision like this with a about ten ppl having their say? The two of them know everything there is to know about baseball yet, they have the common sense of a five yr old. They cant think outside the box for one second. And Mike is actually a yankee fan. Then, of course, Cashman cannot be blamed for any of it. The team falls apart next yr – dont blame the guy who built the team, blame the guy who took the conference call abou torre. And they dont listen to the opinions of a single caller or argues against cash or torre this week. And I love how maddog is pretending like he knows everything there is to know about the yanks this week and Mike is agreeing with everything dog has to say even tho dog spends the majority of his yr bashing the yanks organization every chance he gets. Make cash hold responsibility for god sake. Think about how the contract was five million for a guy that has failed to reach the yanks ultimate goal for seven seasons now. Who cares if he wont three out of four – that was seven yrs ago buddy. Mike constantly talks about how the yanks fail if they dont win and how torre could not be re-signed all season. However, somehow now, at this point, to Mike, this whole thing is a travesty. Where did u brain go Mike?

  98. Dave October 22nd, 2007 at 11:42 pm

I forgot to mention that Donnie would be impossible to fire- they would need to give him a two or three yr deal. Girardi could be easily let go and the organization can completely cut ties with girardi if the team fails under him. Girardi seems to fit the bill exactly. Mattingly is everything the yankees dont want in a manager right now. Another thing Mike and the maddog are completely lost on this week.

  99. Andrea October 22nd, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Could Pete have found a picture of Girardi that made him look older?

  100. Skippy October 23rd, 2007 at 12:01 am

I like Girardi and have been hoping for a while that he’d get the job.

As for the “issues” surrounding his candidacy:

    1) Keep in mind that it’s always been in Florida’s best interest to put out negative stuff about Girardi. By the end of summer ’06, He was getting good reviews for managing, but word was out that they were going to fire him. So to save face, I believe the Marlins orchestrated a smear campaign–otherwise they’d look like idiots for firing the NL manager of the year.
    2) The whole “ruining young pitchers” thing–see above. And in regards to the infamous sending Josh Johnson out after the rain delay story–shouldn’t the pitching coach get at least some, if not more of the blame? It’s his job to take care of the pitchers and to let the manager know if a kid is being put at risk by going out again.
    3) Veterans, or can Joe manage his contemporaries? If he was walking into another team’s clubhouse, yeah, I think it would be dangerous to have to try to win over vets who are only a few years younger than him. But he knows these guys and does anyone really think that players like Jeter and (hopefully!) Posada are so unprofessional that they’ll sulk and pout and misbehave just because a former teammate is now in charge? They may not like every rule that would be put into place, but I think these guys are more interested in winning than acting like pouty first graders.

Anyway, that’s my pitch for this Joe. Thanks for the audio, Pete.

P.S. I have no idea why I have strikethroughs in point #2 above. Pete! Edit button, pleeeaase…

  102. Andrea October 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am

Skippy: the strikethroughs happy if you put — around words. Used to happen to me all the time :)

  103. MJL October 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am

    Why do I hate freedom?

What do you even mean by that?

  104. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am

If you use dashes like –this– , it strikethroughs.

  105. jonm October 23rd, 2007 at 12:06 am

I thought the questions asked were disappointing. The questions struck me as dull and shallow — lame vague questions about “feelings.”

Why not ask questions concerning baseball strategy?

    For example:
What would the candidate do with regard to building a strong bullpen? or
What does the candidate think about the sacrifice bunt? or
Does the candidate prefer managing veterans or rookies? or
Does the candidate think that young players need to be managed differently than veterans?
Or, particularly in Girardi’s case, ask why he thinks that the Marlins young starters had a rash of injuries this year.

With so many baseball resources available online now, there is no excuse for the NY sports media not to be a little more creative.

I watched the whole Torre press conference and the only truly interesting question asked was whether Joe had any regrets.

  106. J-Dawg October 23rd, 2007 at 12:09 am

Keeping Girardi would have been counterproductive if you look at the way that the Marlins do things. He would have made them a consistent winner and a factor in the NL East for years to come. I honestly don’t think that winning is in the minds of Marlins’ management. Whenever they do win, they tear the team apart and start from scratch. They have done that twice, so it looks like they enjoy the challenge of rebuilding. The Marlins would have given him lemons, so Joe would have just made lemonade, simple as that. No matter what kind of team that the Marlins handed to Girardi, he would have made believers out of everybody on that roster, had them ready to play every night, and they definitely would have been contenders. The team in ’06 bought into his philosophy and he won 78 games with a team that many had predicted would lose over 100. It looks like the Yankees have just interviewed the best available manager out there.

  107. J-Dawg October 23rd, 2007 at 12:11 am

That should be the best available managerial candidate. D’OH, I messed up again! :)

  108. cc October 23rd, 2007 at 12:32 am

are they going to do the same with Mattingly? there’s a guy who needs to be tested in front of the media.

  109. Master Wangkee October 23rd, 2007 at 12:45 am

    YO PETE! GOTTA REPRESENT!

Most interesting point made on today’s blog. I hope it’s as obvious to management as it is to us.

“Here’s the problem with hiring Mattingly: It would be harder to fire him than Torre, and that’s a pretty big risk for a guy who has never managed a game.”

  110. MJL October 23rd, 2007 at 12:46 am

I just looked back at all the past managers going back to the CBS Years, and it really makes you appreciate the era that just ended. Going back to 1973 from Torre, Buck Showalter, Stump Merrill, Bucky Dent, Dallas Green, Lou Piniella, Billy Martin, Lou Piniella, Billy Martin (that’s not a mistake), Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Clyde King, Gene Michael, Bob Lemon, Gene Michael, Dick Howser, Billy Martin, Bob Lemon, Dick Howser, Billy Martin, Bill Virdon, Ralph Houk. 21 Coaching changes between 14 men over 35 years. Over a third of those years under Joe Torre. Quite a mark.

  111. Count of Montefusco October 23rd, 2007 at 1:13 am

Man, I love Donnie, but Joe G. is the man for the job.

I’ve always just loved his energy and feel like this squad would really come charging out of the gate in April.

  112. G. Love October 23rd, 2007 at 1:19 am

I don’t buy into this Girardi is going to come in with a set of strict rules.

What rules Girardi could impose on the team that the Yankees don’t already impose on them. No beards or long hair is already in place as well as the dress code.

What else can he do to them? Bed checks, lol?

Seriously, I don’t think he’s going to be cleat length and outlawing laugher in the clubhouse.

I think he’s the man for the job. The toughness that embodied him as a player will become the image of his team. It’s inevitable. His voice and approach to the game and how he views it will be seen.

I love Donnie like everyone. I used to cut high school to go to day games just to watch him play. But he’s going to be more laid back than Torre and I think he’s going to think he needs to stay/look calm all the time since that was Torre’s schtick.

Joe Girardi is the right next step for this team. I hope he gets the chance and the best guy wins out over sentimentality.

  113. Skippy October 23rd, 2007 at 2:05 am

    Oh no…dashes = strikethroughs! That’s bad news, as I am rather dash-happy….

  114. Brandon (Tony Pena for 08') October 23rd, 2007 at 2:07 am

1 more day until Tony Pena wraps this search up and gets the title Yankee Manager Tony Pena :D

  115. Giuseppe Franco October 23rd, 2007 at 2:50 am

Give it up, Brandon. There is NO CHANCE Tony Pena gets that job.

    It ain’t happening. Move on.

  116. Brandon (Tony Pena for 08') October 23rd, 2007 at 3:01 am

Giuseppe, stop hating because you know damn well if his name were Tony Clarkson then w/ his resume you would give him a shot.

  117. Giuseppe Franco October 23rd, 2007 at 3:12 am

    That’s so ridiculous.

Bobby Valentine nor Trey Hillman never had a shot at the job either.

Don’t look for reasons to throw down the race card because it makes you look simple-minded.

  118. Brandon (Tony Pena for 08') October 23rd, 2007 at 3:23 am

you haven’t given me a damn reason why Tony Pena wouldn’t be a good choice !!!

all I hear from you is no shot , no shot , no shot, just a fill in , give me damn break !!!

  119. Giuseppe Franco October 23rd, 2007 at 3:50 am

It’s not just about the man’s resume. It’s also about PR and the Yanks hiring a big name to make up for the Torre flub.

Not to mention they want to keep Mo, Jorge, Pettitte, and A-Rod and Donnie Baseball might be their best chance to make that happen.

There is no way they want to tear this team apart with that payroll and it could happen if those guys leave.

Also, Pete is right about Mattingly coming in a few years ago to eventually become the Yankee manager.

The writing has been on the wall for a few years.

As I said before, if Pena doesn’t get a job elsewhere, I bet he becomes the new bench coach under Mattingly.

  120. EJ October 23rd, 2007 at 9:56 am

    Pete,

Although I think he could be a very good “game” manager, I also have concerns about Girardi’s potential mishandling
of our young pitchers. Do you have an opinion about this?

  121. Drew October 23rd, 2007 at 10:18 am

Who was that running the Q&A? Jason Zillo?
