Atleast Donnie wazn’t wear’n a “I dance with Papelbon” tee, like rudy.

    HA! thats classic.

I still think that Girardi is the better choice, but I’m going to support Donnie 100% if he gets it. Plus if by some miracle he manages the Yanks to a WS victory, I’ll finally be able to get over the grief I’ve had for 20 yrs about him never winning a championship.

  7. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 23rd, 2007 at 9:08 pm

    HAHA!

And Donnie M looks really weird out of a baseball uniform.

  8. BigJoe October 23rd, 2007 at 9:10 pm

When was the last time Cash saw the sun? My gosh man…get out a bit.

“Every year it was, disappointment, disappointment, disappointment. I just didn’t think it was the right thing. I let them know how I felt. But, when I was speaking, there was nothing coming back”. Joe Torre from his Real Sports interview, airing tonight.

From the day Joe Torre was hired, the mantra for the Yankees has never changed. Its to win the World Series.

That doesn’t mean they have to win the WS every year. But, how can he not acknowledge disappointments, especially the last 3 years?

Does he not think this year was disappointing? How about last year? 2004? How about 3 straight first round losses?

The guy has been in the game his entire life. There are disappointments and the last 3 years, no matter how much he wants to spin it, were disappointing seasons for the Yankees.

His comments reinforce that letting him go was the right move. If the New England Patriots don’t win the Super Bowl this year, I doubt Bill Belichick will call it a successful season.

If Joe wants, “atta boys” for a job well done, work for 500K a year in a soft market, which views 85 win seasons as “great”. He had no problems asking for big money after they won. He has to take some hits when they don’t.

That’s the way it goes and he knows that. I have no idea what he was expecting from the Yankees after this season. He wasn’t going to get a 3 year contract extension.

He wanted a 1 year extension for 4.5 million in the spring. He’s now “insulted” by a one year 5 million dollar offer with incentives.

Now, he’s upset the Yankees felt “disappointed over 3 straight first round losses.

The more he talks, the more he runs the risk of looking like a whiner.

  11. G. Love October 23rd, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Mattingly should have worn the pinstripe suit in the poster Pete posted. That would have be so money.

  12. pat October 23rd, 2007 at 9:11 pm

With all the scrutiny, I’m waiting for someone to say wearing the blue pants and shirt was a nice touch; a pinstriped shirt would have been too much.

  13. BigJoe October 23rd, 2007 at 9:12 pm

Laura, I would love a WS victory under Donnie more than practically anyone else…but I have my doubts after his press call.

  14. pat October 23rd, 2007 at 9:14 pm

and I didn’t have to wait long.

  15. Dr. Acula October 23rd, 2007 at 9:16 pm

    Pat-

    good point.

Donnie should have wore a shirt with a Yankee logo, not Ralph Lauren polo logo.

  16. Jason October 23rd, 2007 at 9:16 pm

Man I hope it is Girardi because I would be saddened if Mattingly was hired and then fired 20 games into the season.

  17. SJ44 October 23rd, 2007 at 9:19 pm

What makes you think Mattingly would get fired 20 games into the season?

Did Joe Torre get fired 20 games into a season?

  18. Bob Michaels October 23rd, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Joe Torre still does not have a CLUE.

  19. .i. October 23rd, 2007 at 9:20 pm

they need to dress better, how long are those sleeves mattingly? and don’t tell me picking out a shirt online is a crapshoot. woah.

  20. Rockin' Rich October 23rd, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Nice to hear from all the fashionistas here… not that there’s anything wrong with that!

  21. Laura October 23rd, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I guess what bugged me the most about Donnie’s press conference was when he used the term “crapshoot”.

Can someone pass a law that the use of the word “crapshoot” is an act of treason, which is punishable by death?

  22. Drex October 23rd, 2007 at 9:24 pm

Ha! Portraying Cashman in hip hop terms with ebonic slang. Like nomaas, without the humor.

  23. Travis October 23rd, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Does anyone dress to look professional anymore?

  24. BigJoe October 23rd, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Crapshoot discounts your players and your own decisions. I would not want to play for a manager that viewed my playoff future as a crapshoot.

Donnie moved me out of his camp and into Joe G’s camp.

  25. #9 October 23rd, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Mr. Torre had much better fashion sense than either of these guys.

  26. Jason October 23rd, 2007 at 9:29 pm

Torre’s been doing this for a while so its a silly arguement.

    Donnie has ZERO management experience.

  27. RockinDaBronx October 23rd, 2007 at 9:29 pm

    Cashman is so emo.

  28. Dr. Acula October 23rd, 2007 at 9:30 pm

Lil’ homie, that’s so mid 1990s.

  32. Travis October 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Sorry, Pat, I wasn’t aware of the Florida dress code! I need to get out of New York.

  33. grafxkid October 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm

    Nice AdLib Pete!!

  34. Jenna October 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm

They both look so awkward, but the caption is priceless, Pete!

  35. .i. October 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm

thats not true, i live in florida and the formal dress code for the gm/manager of a billion dollar team is not what these fools are wearing.

  36. Col October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Yankees should keep Cashman forever just for his name…

  37. Kill-Schill(ing) October 23rd, 2007 at 9:47 pm

was torre on Bryant Gumball’s show already?

  38. realism speaking October 23rd, 2007 at 9:48 pm

All the respect Torre has built up over the years is beginning to show cracks courtesy of himself and the more interviews he does, the bigger the cracks get.
Any manager since George Steinbrenner bought the team in ’72 should have known going in what the expectations were or else they fell under the heading of delusional.
In Joe Torre’s case he caught Steinbrenner in his declining years from about 2005 to now.
C’mon Joe, don’t reach to the depths of sour grapes. Don’t bite the hand that fed you well for 12 years. Just let it go. Nobody would have called you a fool for accepting the last contract you were offered. Most would have figured you were a cat with more than 9 lives.

  39. YankeeJosh October 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm

    SJ,

What gets me is everyone who says the next manager will have so much pressure because it’s win or else. Torre wasn’t brought back after a first round exit, so surely the next manager must do better.

    WRONG.

More was expected from Torre because of his salary demands. A first round exit with Mattingly making substantially less money would be easier to accept. Right or wrong, that’s the Yankees thinking. It’s all about the money with Joe Torre.

  40. J-Dawg October 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm

You can already tell that Mattingly would be a risk taker. They are in the bright sun and Donnie isn’t even wearing those sunglasses. He is tough but needs to watch out for blindness! :)

  41. Dr. Acula October 23rd, 2007 at 9:51 pm

    dress code in Fly

    It depends.

There’s one code in Gainesvile and there’s _another_ in Tampa.

    Day-um, now I’ve heard everything!

  43. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 9:52 pm

He’s on now!! And he has already lost me. He is a liar!! He already changed what he said from last week!!!

Bob: The Yankees offered you a deal for 5 million dollars with incentives that could have brought it up to 8, with only the first year guartanteed. What killed the deal for you?

Joe:what killed it for me was only one year. (HMM In spring training you were talking a 4.5 million dollar deal for *ONLY ONE YEAR* .

Bob: what if they guaranteed two years with the same salary/incentive structure?

Joe: i probably could have worked with that, knowing that the two years was more important to me (hmm you said differently 4 days ago.)
term was more important than amount.

  44. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 23rd, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I have no HBO here, keep the updates coming!

  45. Clark Kent October 23rd, 2007 at 9:56 pm

If Brian Cashman doesn’t get frequent flyer miles from NYC to Tampa and back, something is radically wrong. He must be on a 1st name basis with pilots and co-pilots.

  46. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 9:58 pm

Didn’t like the incentive clause during press conference because it was distracting to players. But he already has one!!

wanted to be part of finding a new manager!!

  47. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Emotions why he didn’t want to go back to the stadium. Assistant has already started cleaning office before offer!!!

  51. #9 October 23rd, 2007 at 10:02 pm

He didn’t give a definitive answer if he goes into Hall of Fame as Yankee.

  52. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:02 pm

Thats it. Makes me be even more against him.

  53. Kill-Schill(ing) October 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 pm

God, I love that man. I only wish I had the chutzpah to go to Torre’s house, knock on his door, and give him a hug.

  54. Viking Coach October 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 pm

    Yankee Fans
Lets take sentiment out of the equation. Is there anyone out there who can onestly say that Mattingly is abetter choice than Girardi? If they were up for any other job in baseball the choice is a no brainer. If the front office lets sentiment get in the way of choosing the next manager they will be making a huge mistake. Let Donnie reamain the icon that he is, if he manages his image will be tarnished, plus girardi is the better man for the job.

  55. .i. October 23rd, 2007 at 10:05 pm

  56. .i. October 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

  57. ORORO October 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 pm

r u kidding me???…he was incredible. Makes the Steinbrenners look absolutely petty and stupid. Take Joe back!!ASAP

  58. Dr. Acula October 23rd, 2007 at 10:09 pm

_He didn’t give a definitive answer if he goes into Hall of Fame as Yankee_

    Oh brother.

He’s not going to the HOF for his tenure in STL, ATL, and Shea.

  59. Yanke MB October 23rd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

    Dr Acula,

    Get a life dude.

  60. Humpty Dumpty October 23rd, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Joe Torre wasn’t pushed off the wall. He fell all by himself. All the King’s horses and all the King’s men can’t put Joe back together again.

  61. Tommy October 23rd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

After the interview, Costas and Gumbel are both spewing the crapshoot line. Then in the same breath, Costas says that the Yanks were not as good as BOS or CLE this year anyway.
Then, he says that Joe could not possibly manage the Brewers. Or the Reds. How pompous!
    Madness!

  62. Dr. Acula October 23rd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

sounds like the interview is a Rorschach test.

I’ll snag it later and post it overnite.

  63. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:12 pm

He never said I want to go in as a Yankee!!

  64. gayle October 23rd, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Ok after this latest interview all I have to say is enough already. Maybe it’s me but we learned absolutely nothing new, although they promoted it as his first one one one (that is not even true) if you saw the press conference then you have seen and heard it all before.

Costas who is usually a great interview seemed more interested in the health status of Steinbrenner and didnt seem to do his homework. What about asking him why he was ok with a one year deal in the Spring??

Finally if incentives are not important then why did Torre have them in his contract all along.

It is time for everyone to move on this story is over and a new chapter will soon be opened. At this point it has just become boring.

  65. BBFan October 23rd, 2007 at 10:16 pm

See, Joe Torre is not the saint he is portrayed to be.

Starting with tonight’s interview, he is making a fool of himself with the kind of answers he is giving.

Correct that… He made a fool of himself on Friday when he said that he did not go to stop the bugs game becuse he was worried his visit will count as a trip. And he gives this answer after he had so much time to think about it. He does not have to make any more trips as Yankee manager. LOL.

  66. SJ44 October 23rd, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Take him back? Sorry but, that’s the LAST thing the Yankees should consider doing. Especially after tonight.

They didn’t want to give him two years for a reason.

Like a player whose time is up, they didn’t feel comfortable having him manage the team for two more years.

Why is that so hard to comprehend? It happens.

Last week, it was the incentives that “insulted” him even though he have had them in EVERY contract he ever signed with the Yankees.

Tonight, the “insult” was the lack of a second year.

He did a great job as Yankee Manager. However, he’s not a Supreme Court Justice. Its not a lifetime position. He’s a baseball manager and, truth be told, not as good as he used to be.

As Dave Checketts used to say every year Mark Messier would look for huge money after his career was in decline….”How many more times do I have to pay for 1994″?

The Yankees can’t keep paying for the past and adequately plan for the future.

They made the right move changing managers even though the ending was bungled. However, if he keeps popping off, as Costas correctly pointed out tonight, he runs the risk of losing the goodwill he built up all these years.

Just let it go Joe, cool off and move on.

  67. Dr. Phil October 23rd, 2007 at 10:18 pm

C’mon Joe, you built a home in Hawaii. Do the right thing and go there. But the time you come back in April, spring training will be over and you can sit back in Harrison and watch Yankee games on YES or listen to John & Suzyn on WCBS.

  68. pat October 23rd, 2007 at 10:20 pm

Players don’t get to pick what the go into the Hall as, why would managers?

  69. Chicago Dave October 23rd, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Is there really any chance at all for Tony Pena at this point? Should he even bother showing up for the interview tomorrow?! I seriously wonder…

  70. Tommy October 23rd, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Does MLB decide the team a manager goes into the Hall with?
Also, the flippant tone they took about the HOF.
He could not possibly go in but as a Yankee.

  71. .i. October 23rd, 2007 at 10:24 pm

so, pat… joe torre is gonna go into the hall of fame as a padre? comon bro…

  72. Chicago Dave October 23rd, 2007 at 10:25 pm

I guess Joe is intent on extracting his pound of flesh from the Yanks now…and he’s going to do it with one TV interview after another.

I sure wish he would just do what Girardi did after the Florida debacle. Talk about it in private but don’t go blabbing “poor me” all over the airwaves. Not too classy, Joe…

  73. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Oh one other thing, Costas mentioned that Joe got the “big deal” after all the success. Um correct me if I’m wrong but he was given the “big deal” *after* the 2004 collapse.

  74. Mr. & Mrs. Alka Seltzer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    Hey Doc Acula :

Any chance of defining a Rorschach test by midnight or so ? We’d prefer not to be up in the wee hours with upset tummys.

  75. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:28 pm

He could answer the question. Roger did. He said he wants to go in as a Yankee. Joe could answer, while that doesn’t mean they would listen to him he could answer!

  76. pat October 23rd, 2007 at 10:29 pm

I didn’t say he doesn’t go in a Yankee. Someone above said he didn’t know if he would go in a Yankee. All I was saying is Torre doesn’t get to decide what he goes in as.

  77. jennifer October 23rd, 2007 at 10:30 pm

I’m waiting for the book to come out.

A year after Joe G was fired by the Marlins he still chooses not to talk about it. But Joe T is already ready to talk.

Jason: “Donnie has ZERO management experience.”

But hes been managing in his own mind!!

  82. Matt October 23rd, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Right you are, Jennifer. Torre started seeing bigger bucks after the 2004 fiasco and in doing so, took advantage of George’s failing health and his son’s indecisions of getting involved with the team. Levine was too busy with the new Stadium project and Steve Swindall signed Torre to his last lucrative deal when he wasn’t busy with the naughty ladies of St. Petersburg.

  83. Dee October 23rd, 2007 at 10:40 pm

I respect Joe Torre and his decision but he really needs to stop talking now. Just stop. If he brings this bitter parade to letterman next week it’s not gonna go over well.

  84. Humphrey Bogus October 23rd, 2007 at 10:49 pm

For my money Mattingly gave some rather vague and shallow answers to questions put forth by the media in his conference. A good hitting coach he his. A managerial candidate is questionable.

  85. LathamJoe October 23rd, 2007 at 10:53 pm

As I recall, when Torre signed hi $19.5 Mil 3 -year extension as manager in 2004, there was also mentioned that he would be retained for up to 6 years as a consultant in the Yankee organization. Just curious, Was that agreement altered?
Obviously, neither party is likely interested in pursuing that opion now!

  86. Nick October 23rd, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Torre needs to realize that NOBODY is bigger than the New York Yankees. Not George Steinbrenner, or Babe Ruth, and certainly not Joe Torre. All a contributing part of team history and no more.

  87. gayle October 23rd, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Torre got his deal in SPRING TRAINING of 2004 it was before not after

  88. Kelli October 23rd, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Torre has run the full gamut of tear jerking and now reality sets in. He’d better stop making appearances for money or he risks looking like a greedy Scott Boras.

  89. mark October 24th, 2007 at 1:47 am

“He could answer the question. Roger did. He said he wants to go in as a Yankee. Joe could answer, while that doesn’t mean they would listen to him he could answer!”

Well, clemens makes complete sense going in as a yankee. Torre, however, has some class.
