Is it worth noting that it would be about an hour shorter than Joe’s.
Hey, can you post the conference call-in number, so we can all call in with questions? ; )
awesome job Pete! looking forward to hearing the interview.
Pete, Ask him what has changed since the middle of the season. Why does he feel he is ready to manage now.
Also ask him, if he feels it is a defeatest attitute to make a comment about following John Wooden (sp).
I posted this in an earlier thread and realized no one was reading that one so I am reposting:
How can people start saying cash is losing power and Levine is gaining it? Cash;s job is to make trades and sign free agents no? Why cant the president and owners have a say in signing the manager? Why should it be in the hands of the GM or in one mans hands at all? This is more of a franchise decision. And they are still letting Cashman have a say. And cash has not made the greatest decisions in the last couple of yrs either, with all his failings he should be losing power. When Levine starts signing free agents and trying to trade for Santana, then you can start to post how Cash is losing power. The World series isnt even over, people have to relax, the king of horrible decision isnt losing anything unfortunately. I for one, cant wait until cash’s yankee career is over and he can go destroy another team. I dunno why people defend the guy with their life, like he has done anything to help this team. NEWSFLASH: The scouts decided to pick Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy not the GM. Cash was the one that signed Farnsworthless, Pavano, Wright, Johnson, Moose to a two yr contract last yr. He was the one that gave pettitte a player option. He traded for Vizcaino and ohelendorf instead of Micah Owings. He traded away Proctor when we desparately needed bullpen help. He gave clemens a prorated 28 million to go six and six (granted I would have made that signing.) He signed Kevin Brown and Jeff Weaver to waste a couple of million dollars here and there. He completely ignored the bullpen last off season when guys like Justin Speiers and Jamie Walker were free agents. He did not attempt to re-sign Tom Gordon by offering him a massive chunk of change after he had served to solify our bullpen the prior season. He was the one that completely ignored the bench deciding to waste our money on 40 plus yr old arms and stick sal fasano, wil nievers and kelly stinett on the bench to backup a catcher in his mid 30s. He signed a lefty hitter to play first when we had a ridiculously lefty heavy lineup already. He traded away our best right handed bat to the team that knocked us out of the playoffs that season for a pitcheer that had been injurred eight times before the age of 22. He refused to allow Britton to become a major leaguer after trading Jaret wright for him and agree to pay most of the salary. And who can forget that he signed a minor league pitcher for 40 million around the same time all of his advanced scouts were telling him that Igawa may not be a fifth starter in the national league. Guess they were right. If cash cannot evaluate Igawas talent what makes everyone think he hand-picked Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy instead of those scouts the yanks hire for the same purposes. Im just wondering what cash has done right in the last five yrs. And wasnt he hired around the same time the yanks won their last world series ring?
LEVINE IS JUST ACTING AS A SCAPEGOAT TO ALL YOU FANS WHO WORSHIP CASHMAN ON A NIGHTLY BASIS – LIKE MIKE AND THE MADDOG. Now, when cash fails miserably once again, everyone can blame levine instead of cashman. Similar to blaiming steinbrenner and the tampa faction earlier when Cash was ruining our team. Keep praising cashman for things he takes little or no part in like the draft while absolving him of the blame for signing horrible free agents and making stupid trades (Which is his job!)
SJ44,
I still think the Yankees jump at the chance to move Wang and Cabrera for Santana. I also think they will have to add two bodies to get it done. I would do the trade if it was Wang, Cabrera, Horne/Kennedy, Tabata.
That may seem like a lot, but two things:
1) Yankees are trading the proverbial “replaceable parts” (there are several SP in the minors who can serve the #3 SP role of Wang, and Cabrera’s bat is “buyable”).
2) The Yankee “heirarchy” HAS to a burr under its saddle regarding Wang’s performance in the ALDS. And we all know how they treat employees once the shine is off.
3) They have a chance to get the one commodity that has caused them to get bumped out of the playoffs consistently… a knock-down, bonafide A-#1 stud ace. Players like Santana do not come along very often, particulary in such a time of need as the Yankees are in.
4) The Yankees CANNOT risk the Red Sox getting Santana. For that, they should/would/could/will overpay.
Reply to jennifer’s notation: NO.
Cash swore up and down that he didn’t want to part with Cabrera. I’m not sure that recent events change that. Also, what would it do to Cano’s spirits to lose Torre, Bowa and Cabrera all at the same time? In baseball, you are not supposed to get attached to people because they could be gone in a minute, but still – I think that’s a lot to ask of Robbie.
good points there….I’m still cautious for a Santanna trade but I’m sure it would help. If the trade “happens” I would like Torri Hunter to replace Melky.
Thanks for the updates, Pete. Keep them coming.
Love Donnie Baseball, but I want Girardi!!!
Mattingly has finished one part of the test. This entire process of these candidates being interviewed can be compared to taking an important college exam. It’s very important but it may take several days to find out how you did on the exam. That’s the way that it will be for these candidates. The Yankees will tell everyone in a few days which candidate did the best on his exam, or in more traditional terms- will be the new manager.
One more thing to those that think that Santana is a wash to Wang.
His ERA this year was 3.27, the last yankee to do that was the 02 Andy Pettite.
His lifetime ERA is 3.22, the last yankee to do that in a season was the 97 David Cone
His best ERA was 2.61, the last yankee to do that in a season was 78 Ron Guidry
Please dont tell me that Wang and Santana are the same pitcher.
I don’t disagree bobcat.
I like Wang and Melky a lot. But, we are talking about Johan Santana. If you can get him by giving up Wang and Cabrera with another pitcher (no Hughes or Joba), you do it.
This is not some 40 year old guy with a bad back. This is the #1 or #2 pitcher in the game, in the prime of his career. He’s not good. He’s great. If people don’t think so, they don’t know the game.
Things also break right for the Yankees in this situation. There are CF’s out there they can sign to replace Melky. They also have Austin Jackson on the fast track and a deeper system to replace any prospect(s) included in the deal.
well congrats to Donnie Baseball for his interview I hope Tony Pena has a great interview
Pete,
Ask him if Randy Levine is as ugly in person as he is on TV and the papers.
Danke.
Cashman also said Bubba Crosby was going to be in CF in 2006.
Don’t take what GM’s say literally.
For the right deal, they will move ANYBODY if it improves their team. That’s their job.
I guess you guys dont appreciate Wang? A pitcher who won 38 games the last two seasons and is amazing talented. Cabrera who is 23 and will only get better. Kennedy / Hughes who could be this season or very soon #1 or #2 pitchers. Tabata who has been compared to Manny Rameriz and Andrew Jones. So you would trade those guys for a pitcher who has been declining every season? If you dont believe me look at his stats. Their good, but whats the reason to throw away younger players for a pitcher on the decline?
I’m curious to hear Donnie handle the media.
Ask him some good ones, Pete!
Don’t get me wrong. I like Wang and Melky a lot also, and think they are very servicable, but they are replaceable, particulary if you are talking about THE guy out there.
Lest we forget that several pitchers have had a hard time adjusting to the American League. Santana hits the ground running in that regard.
And CF is the spot for FA this year. It’s not SP.
And, as I indicated, you KNOW the von Steingrabbers are not happy with Wang’s performance.
Wow.. Dave, no one other than Cash is to blame… its too bad he could not *predict* pavano’s mental frailities..
i just think u need to drink some water and move away from a few websites..
to blame everything on Cashman is a little silly… and if FA and trades is all a GM gets credited for.. then there are 29 other GMs who shud not get that credit!!
and for the record.. the DBacks refused to give Micah Owings in the trade.. also, it looks like Micah might be a better long-term NL type pinch hitter than a shut down reliever/starter
Anyone else think that Pena’s interview will last about 15 minutes tomorrow?
It’s just great that Melky is still around as a trade chip. It may have been disastrous if he would have gone to Pittsburgh right before last year’s trade deadline. A rumored deal was Melky to Pittsburgh for Jeromy Burnitz and Craig Wilson. No thanks. And when you’re talking about Santana, you’re talking about a two-time Cy Young winner, a guy who is capable of pitching a shutout and striking out 15 each start. There are not too many guys like that available. If Santana is available, go for it.
Douglas,
This is Santana we’re talking about. Where he goes will go a long way to determining the next WS winner.
I DO appreciate Wang… I REALLY appreciate Santana.
That’s true, SJ44 but I’m sure you’ll agree that Melky is quite a bit better than Crosby was. Does anyone know if Melky led the AL in outfield assists?
If johan would have pitched, like he pitched in the past two season with the yankees, he could have won 50 games. Its no joke, this guy is great.
We love Wang, but Johan is a huge upgrade.
Can someone please explain why they think Tony Pena would be a good fit here? He is a quiet, sleepy, players coach….didnt they just let his mirror image go?
Please….
Giuliani is rooting for Boston to win!!

His interview was on the 23rd …..it was meant to be.
They should have Girardi, Mattingly & Pena have a debate the way the presidential candidates do…
Broadcast it on YES and have Pete as the moderator:
“Dear candidates – which of you support the DH rule?”
“If your player was caught using steroids – how would you deal with that player?”
Like Bobcat, I like Wang and Cabrera. But, Melky can be replaced and if you are replacing Wang with Johan Santana, to me, its a no brainer. You gotta do it.
Santana, Hughes, Pettitte, Chamberlain, Mussina. I can live with that rotation. Its an upgrade from this year.
I also like Aaron Rowand. As FA CF’s go, I think he gives you the biggest bang for the buck. Not as expensive as Jones or Hunter, and he fits the kind of player currently lacking on the Yankees right now. A tough, gritty, winner-type of guy. His RH bat also balances out the lineup a bit.
The idea is to improve the team without weakening the farm system. Obviously, we are only speculating here. However, trading Melky, Wang and one other pitcher (no Hughes or Joba) is making the Yankees a better team, IMO.
That’s not a knock to Wang and Cabrera. Its a testimony to how good Johan Santana is and what he can mean to a team.
Let Donnie be player/manager..he could still hit better than Phillips, Mientkiewicz, or Betemit.
How Do , Dave you are ripping CASHMAN like you know what Arizona was offering. Trying to Win now and Rebuild the Farm system is not easy. The Yankees have Not Traded away there best prospects for guys like GAGNE. You can Thank Cashman for that. Has he made mistakes of course he has but of the current management team I have the most faith in him .
VERY NICE !!!!
Brian in CT — Pena is only being interviewed to fulfill Selig’s minority quota. Tomorrow, he might as well be Token Pena.
I think you guys are losing sight of something here. Melky is what, 22 yrs old? Hunter is in his thirties and is oft-injured. I think Rowand is in his late 20’s. Melky could be the CF of the future for the Yankees. I say hold on to him. In the past, we were too quick to trade away our young guys. How about holding on to them to see what they can do?
Coco loco, I agree! I just didnt want to say it : )
I am still shaking my head….Pena, Tony Pena????? C’mon people….
I would love to hear that in selecting Joe Girardi as the next manager, he’ll be given his old uniform No. 25 that he wore as a player. This would signal the departure of the declining Giambi.
Hopefully its Joe G… No to Donnie baseball
did u guys chk this Jon heyman column
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html
suddenly the Yanks dont look so cruel
Girardi wore number 45 when he signed with the yankees. He changed it for Cecil Fielder.
As an aside, Steve Phillips is an idiot. He said on today’s Baseball Today Podcast that NY wasn’t the best place for A-Rod to play. Really? Yeah, that A-Rod is really suffering in that NY atmosphere. I mean, he only had 54 HRs and 156 RBIs. What a slacker!!!
I can’t stand SP and I wish he would keep his trap shut because he doesn’t know what the heck he is talking about. A-Rod has proven that he can play in NY….during the regular season. The Postseason? Well, he’s going to work on that. : )
I’m with SJ 44 in pursuing 30 year old Aaron Rowand in the event Melky Cabrera were to be involved in a Santana deal.
Aside of being a good clubhouse presence, he would be the best pure CF the Yankees have seen in years. The spacious CF at the Stadium and other venues would be his domain and a neat righthanded bat to match. He could keep the position in check until Austin Jackson shows he’s ready.
The Yankees are fine. I think any new manager will add a freshness to the team- and that’s all this team really need.
Any significant trades I think would not be in the favor of the yankees either. Unless the team average age gets younger with a trade, I think the yankees should not trade.
Wang, Pettitte, Hughes, Joba, Kennedy. That’s a rotation built for the future- ofcourse pettitte is the anchoring veteran to give stability and wang is a future veteran. Bullpen can be figured out – hopefully they pay Mo to come back.
Maybe we can see more Shelly Duncan next year? Positional players are set. They pay posada to come back. Arod back. jeter, cano ofcourse. Melky for outfield.
The Yankees just need a whip behind them telling them to not suck so much in the postseason, ie a new manager!
“Steve Phillips is an idiot. He said on today’s Baseball Today Podcast that NY wasn’t the best place for A-Rod to play.”
Of course it’s the best place for ARod – tons of strip joints here.
Brian in CT, you know what he did in KC w/ that team ? How is he not a strong candidate
he led the Royals to 1st place up to August in the AL, There best OFF bats were Beltran 100 RBI, Sweeney 83 RBI and Ibanez 90 RBI
one of the weakest combos in the AL in 2003, 10 wins by Darrel May was the high for KC starters. Oh and the closing tandem of Grimsley & McDougal had 27 saves between them. Tony Pena led that team to 83 wins, IMO he better be a strong candidate
Pena is best served as a 1st base coach
Didn’t he have a suspicious ending to his managerial career in KC?
nathan(nyc) yeah saw it. but don’t fall for the propaganda machine. the tampa group is working overtime on damage control.did you see the NY Times piece about Hank? think about it – is anyone’s deal before the season going to be the same deal after the season? nope – it could be better, it could be worse. plus, we’ll never know what joe was willing to take because according to both him and cashman, and never denied, there was no negotiating. the “incentives” deal was it. and joe says it was the incentives that did it for him. no reason to think he was lying.
we just have think positive now and hope for a good decision on the new manager.
Laura- Just be glad that Phillips isn’t working for Fox. Otherwise he could be in their World Series booth with McCarver. Yikes.
I think if we ask what we need to give up for Santana, the twins will want one of Hughes or Chamberlain and Kennedy or wang along with prospects. They will ask for far more than we are willing to give like they did with Gagne.
Peter ask Donnie if he was ever intimidated by the prowess of Balboni’s mustache.
Jennifer there was nothing defeatist about Donnie’s comment on following Joe, he was being complimentary by comparing Joe to the greatest college basketball coach ever. I disagree with the comparison, but Donnie was being a nice hoosier.
