New manager by Friday? Maybe so

Brian Cashman isn’t saying much lately. But via e-mail he told me this evening that the three candidates being interviewed are “currently” the only candidates being considered.
That being the case, we could have an announcement by Friday. That’s the first day off in the World Series. Interview Pena tomorrow, make a decision tomorrow night, negotiate the terms on Thursday, press conference in New York on Friday.

On M&MD they said the commish. office could force the yanks to hold off on an announcement until after the WS
How to hire an MLB manager in a New York minute!
shame on baseball tonight for forgetting about mike coolbaugh.
RIP
Tyler,
They should hold off the announcement, wouldn’t want to crash the Red Sox party (GO ROX!)
They do, however, need to let Alex know (as well as Mo & Po). Then the word will leak out and it’ll be even splashier than an announcement. Thus, crashing the Red Sox party (GO ROX!)
Three very good candidates and any one would do a great job.
com’on Tony Pena , Lets Go baby, win this thing !!!
Buster Olney:
1. Girardi’s interview was lights out.
2. Mattingly’s fame works for him and against him. They would like to have a big name to replace Torre, at the same time, Tampa doesn’t want another PR nightmare if a year from now they have to move Donnie out.
3. Boston’s pitching coach John Ferrell and former manager Buck Showalter have been considered, but are not scheduled for interviews at this time.
It would be really hard for MLB to force the Yanks to not make public a decision…
all it takes is a leaked phone call or email.
I’ll be impressed if they make the decision and keep it secret till after the Series.
I would think if the Yanks announced it on the day off it would not be a big deal. So either Fri or Tues. I think Mattingly will get the job but if it is Girardi he is doing the WS pregame on Fox. So they would have to work around that anyway. Knowing the Steins they would probably want to announce it during the WS to take away some of coverage from the animals in Boston. The sooner the better for the Arod situation anyway if they wait until after the WS then they would only have 10 days to deal with his master.
Having listened to both of Pete’s telecons, one with Don and one with Joe, one thing is obvious. Joe is very polished, and quite frankly his polish is why I prefer games on YES without him in the booth. There is a condescending tone to him that is grating. Ken Singleton can explain a baseball situation without it sounding like a lecture. Joe cannot.
Obviously this is just my opinion, but I wonder if anyone else gets this impression, and how his tone would play in that clubhouse.
Don may not come across as smoothly, but he is genuine. Over time I would imagine he would get much better.
If they plan on bringing Arod back they would NEVER bring Showalter on this team, he and Arod hate one another.
All three candidates need campaign slogans to get into the spirit of elections. I have Girardi’s but I am having trouble figuring out a good slogan for Mattingly and Pena. Here is Girardi’s slogan- “A vote for Joe is the way to go!”
If I’m Pena, I have to think that this is a perfunctory interview.
Sounds like they have settled on Joe or Donnie, then, poor Tony he doesn’t deserve to be the token minority interview.
li-famous last words. Watch Peña get it!
Jimbo,
True, Joe does have a strong personality, but that’s what I’d want in my manager. He may be condescending with YES, but look at who he’s working with: Michael Kay, who is really condescending and nasally. Didn’t hear any condescending tone in the telecon.
As for the clubhouse, I don’t think he’d insult the intelligence of the veterans and he wouldn’t have to cajole any of the new guys who are already being mentored by some of the best in the game.
To me, Joe sounds smart as a whip, and while that might threaten some, I think it’s great to have someone that sharp running your team.
Not to say that the other two arent’ sharp or won’t be good. Just saying that Girardi is very impressive to me.
Thanks again, Peter for your work….As the Yankees agree on a new skipper and the Rockies embarass Beckett and the rest of the Boston Bums, the end of this Baseball season will at least have some positive to it.
mel,
Good points. I just hope if they pick Joe that Donnie stays on as a coach. Not sure how that works, though. Could be a Pinstripped Soap Opera.
I used to like Michael Kay when he was with John S. on the radio. I made a post many months ago in which I said that being in the booth with smart ex-players had exposed his lack of knowledge of the game. Joe, Ken, Al, Kitty all made him look kinda dumb at times.
Hey Pete:
Is there anything to the rumor that Posada has an offer on the table in the neighborhood of 3 years $40M? I think I heard Brandon Tierney say it earlier on ESPN Radio, or I might be dreaming.
Yes, Ellen, ESPN News is reporting that the Yanks will offer Posada $40 mil over three years.
Rebecca, I hope Tony gets the position.
Why hasn’t anyone asked any of the candidates if they have people in mind for their coaching staff? It is a question I am dying to know the answer to.
Richard Neer on WFAN is asking:
“Girardi, Mattingly & Pena – are these the best candidates they can come up with?”
Hmmmm…
3 Year, $40 million?
Yeah, I’d take it…huge risk, Posada will be what, 39 at the end of that? However, it’s enough time to trade for or develop a you-know-what.
Girardi does come out off to be smart and VERY confident. Even though that is a good thing I dont know if he might be too confident for the NY media and especially 3 bosses in Tampa that will question your every move. I think he will be a great manager I just dont know if he would flip if he was ever questioned by management or when the media asks you 10,000 questions a day. I feel like he might be the type to get too hot in the heat of the moment. I am curious to know who the vets of the team would prefer, I would assume Mattingly because they are all used to him….but we will never know that.
Jimbo,
I don’t know how Donnie would react if he didn’t get the job. However, I do remember an article at si.com around Father’s Day in which Donnie’s tone was somewhat presumptive.
As Pete likes to say Donnie didn’t come out of retirement, to coach for four years if there wasn’t something to come out of it. After all he has plenty of money.
That bothers me, though. Just because someone comes out of retirement and holds the clipboard for 4 years (actually 1) they should be entitled to the job? (of course there was probably a promise, which of course paints the Yankees into a corner)
Donnie did say in the telecon that he’s been working toward this since he started coaching. If he doesn’t get this job now, then wouldn’t he continue to work toward his goal? And would Donnie be a viable candidate for the manager’s job on any other team? That’s what’s great about Girardi and Randolph, they went for it, even if they had to go outside the Yankees to do it.
If we get posada for3 yrs and 40 mil we should consider ourselves lucky. He would prolly be giving us a hometown discount to take that. Unbelievable that a catcher of his age can sign a contract like that. Dont be too surprised if that contract turns into a boulder around our leg at some point when Posada is on the dl for as many days as Giambi is. But we dont really have a choice unfortunately. The yanks needs to make a big splash by signing Mo and Po before the end of the month after the media crucified them for the torre events. I hope all three are tucked back into the yankees pocket ten days after the world series ends. Hopefully, the rockies and their fans will be celebrating on the streets around the same time Arod and the yanks are negotiating terms and Mo and Po are preparing for their next season in pinstripes. Then, we can start thinking about the dregs of this free agent market to fill our spots at first base and the pen and about abreu and pettittes future. This free agent class is prolly one of the worst in history and we really really dont want to have to start looking for a cleanup hitter, a starting catcher and a closer in this scrap heap. I hope by January the only thing that cashman is concerned with is obtaining a first baseman, some relief pitching (preferrably an ex closer) and how to trade for santana without giving up hughes, chamberlain or kennedy.
Pena has been grossly underestimated on this board and others. Contrary to popular opinion, the Marlins are a well run organization with a tremendous drafting and scouting staff. Girardi had a much more talented pitching staff and lineup and still managed a losing season. There is no Willis/Cabrera/Ramirez on the Royals. The Marlins won two WS in the time (14 years) it took for KC to have a winning percentage above .500. Bottom line is that the Marlins had and always seem to have pretty good talent. Therefore, it is my assertion that Pena not only did more with less, but in addition, he did it in a tougher league. Furthermore, while the owners of both teams are tightwads, KC suffers from a poor scounting dept and FO (Alex Gordon nothwithstanding).
Yes, to Posada for those generous terms. Heart and soul of this team. If he can’t catch anymore, then he becomes a switch-hitting first baseman/DH with some power. Expensive, but it keeps him off the market. Think it’s hard to find primo pitchers? Try finding primo catchers.
Here’s Buster Olney

On The State of the Yankees (Pena, Mattingly, Arod, Girardi, Mini-Stein, Showalter, etc.)
Girardi is the next Mike Scioscia…take it to the bank.
Another former catcher who played under a God-like manager and who comes across “over confident” as some have described Girardi.
Joe G. is built for the job. He looks like a Field General. He looks the part, acts the part, speaks the part, and will steal the show.
PS. Quoting Richard Neer can be hazardous to your health.
Girardi and Pena can be the next Scioscia, more Tony Pena because he can be fiery and happy natured and control a locker room and has done it in the AL before w/ an ABC lineup.
“3 Year, $40 million?
Yeah, I’d take it…huge risk, Posada will be what, 39 at the end of that? However, it’s enough time to trade for or develop a you-know-what.”
I don’t see that that’s such a huge risk. Posada has his best year at the plate @ .338 and has had a relatively consistent BA for the last 6 years.
He’s a matured 39-year old player but not declining. If he’s rested properly during the season, I CAN imagine him lasting another 3 years.
Oh yeah…can you imagine the pressure he handlded to bat .338 when we were playing catch up till the last month of the season.
IMO. We need to see MO and PO in opening day at the new stadium.
**Even Mo, who’s gotten hammered by fans this season. Consider this. Admittedly he is not what he was back when, and he has become somewhat hittable….but if we hadn’t been losing all those games on the first half…Mo would have gotten 40 saves! I don’t see how we can replace talent like that…at least not this off season. Who else is out there?!
Good, on to the next. Tho’ I’m assuming Joe will be explaining how insulted he was on Regis and Kelly at the time, so that might conflict. Maybe I’ll wait to watch him on the Good Night Show with my three year old later.
Girardi did have Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera on hand in ‘06, but little else. Marlins management had just gone on another payroll slashing binge. They traded the likes of Beckett, Mike Lowell, Paul Loduca, Carlos Delgado, Luis Castillo, Juan Pierre, and Ron Villone just to name someone that the Yankees received. They were forced to trade Beckett in order to get Hanley Ramirez. So the cupboard was bare for Girardi. He did an outstanding job to win 78 games as many people had predicted them to lose 100. There was little talent on that team and he was able to bring it all together. National League Rookie of the Year Dan Uggla (from my nearby University of Memphis) was also on the team and definitely benefited from Girardi.
Think of what he may be able to do with all of the talent that the Yankees have. It’s not going to take a Manager of the Year type season for him to make the Yankees a contender. They are already a contender, the only thing that the new manager has to worry about is to keep from pushing the wrong buttons. If the proper buttons are pushed, then the Yankees will undoubtedly continue to be a factor.
don’t worry Joe Torre will be making an appearance on The Maury Show tomorrow (scandals, breakups & lie detector tests)
(misprint)
Steiner:
There’s no doubt in my mind that Posada should sign such a deal. He is that good.
Fact is, though, that when catchers go they tend to go quickly. If Posada can still play behind the plate at 39, it’d be perfect, but what happens if he gets hurt or falls off?
I love Posada and think that resigning him and Mo, and not A-Rod should be the Yanks’ top priority. I hope three years works out wonderfully.
But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think there was some risk involved.
J-Dawg- you give me NL 78 wins, I’ll raise you AL 83 wins
you give me Ramirez, Dontrelle, Miguel Cabrera, I’ll raise you Beltran, Darrell May and Mike Sweeney
you give me Dan Uggla, I’ll raise you Angel Berroa
TOUGH CHOICE
How funny will it be when the big 4 (Posada, Mo, Pettitte, and A-Rod) all come back even though God……errrr…I mean Joe Torre isn’t the manager anymore?
Hey…I think Larry King just said Torre’s gonna be on next after the wildfire updates.
Bob, Joe sure moves fast (j/k)
Brandon- I don’t think that the Yankees could go wrong with either candidate. We can also agree on this- it’s not going to take a heroic season by either guy or Mattingly to make a winner out of the Yankees. Girardi and Tony both had to really make something out of nothing and they did. They won’t have to do that here. This team is in very good shape!
I can’t believe some of the comments regarding the “tone and tenor” of the interviews with Girardi and Mattingly.
Good grief, people!!
If we all based all of our decisions on how people sounded, the checkered-suited used car salesmens’ union would be running the world!!
Let the baseball people decide this. Fortunately, there is no bad choice.
Plus, as has been said a million times… it’s not the manager, it’s the players. Let’s focus on roster improvement, first and foremost. Get the manager named, so Cashman can start tinkering with the lineup card.
J-Dawg, exactly I”m growing tired of the we’re doomed brigade, how I see this is even Donnie can manage this team to the playoffs.
If it’s Joe Girardi most likely Pena is hired by Pittburgh for head managers position. If it’s Tony Pena Mattingly will be the bench coach while Girardi finds a new start else where. If it’s Donnie Baseball Pena needs to be his Don Zimmer, so we’re on the same pg. I got to be careful before Guissepe Franco tells me NO PENA NEVER HAD A CHANCE again
IT’S A CRAPSHOOT BABY!!!
Daily News hammers the traitor within
http://tinyurl.com/23shhe
Pena doesn’t have a chance. Deal with it.
Harley How could I forget about that show!! I’m sure he will be on!
Don’t forget if Jorge starts to not be able to catch towards the end of the contract he can become the back up catcher and dh.
Don’t like the three years. 2 years and an option for Jorge. As far as not declining, just look back at Yanks’ history.
Ellie Howard
1964 (age 35) .313-15-84, 3rd in MVP voting. OPS+ 128 (.826)
1965 .233-9-45 OPS+ 77 (.623 OPS)
It’s amazing Jorge has lasted this long. Most catchers drop off around the age of 33. Unfortunately, a replacement from the minors is at least two or three years away. Retaining Molina is a must.
As for the managing, if that is it, only the three listed as candidates, then I am deeply disappointed. That is not a knock on Mattingly, Girardi or Pena. I think Mattingly will get it, and won’t be surprised if it is Girardi. I have no problem with the choice.
I do have a problem with not interviewing people outside the organization and going “outside the box.” Someone like Ken Macha, who averaged 92 wins a year in his four years at Oakland, and who took the A’s to the 2006 ALCS, needs to at least be interviewed.
The most important decision may be new pitching coach. Personally, I’d favor a pitching-oriented manager (sorry, Donnie), but the choice of pitching coach could be even more important because of the need to continue the developments of Hughes, Chamberlain and Kennedy–not to mention other upcoming youngsters like maybe an Allan Horne.
I have no problem with 3 years for Posada because he can always DH or perhaps play first in his last year.
When you roll the dice, like the Yankees did, and not re-sign him in the spring, that’s the price you pay. It costs you an extra year.
I don’t think the Yankees have any problems paying it, nor should they because its a fair deal.
Donnie, Girardi, Pena it doesn’t matter.
They need to get more pitching in here.
Let’s be real. pena is only being interviewed because they have to interview a minority candidate.
“Let’s be real. pena is only being interviewed because they have to interview a minority candidate.”
and yet, he is still more qualified than Mattingly.
Girardi is going to be a disaster. I hope they choose him as the Dark Ages are coming/here all ready. Little Stein as the new Boss is worse, much worse than the old Boss. Too bad about Pena…….another example of Stein arrogance…Pena the new sacrificial lamb.
Giuseppe Franco, ahhh I was wondering where your Tony Pena hating a.. was
Cut to the Chase it`s Donnie by 23 lengths.
“Girardi is going to be a disaster. I hope they choose him as the Dark Ages are coming/here all ready. Little Stein as the new Boss is worse, much worse than the old Boss. ”
go root for the Mets then, seriously.
“the Dark Ages are coming”, give me a break.
_Giuseppe Franco, ahhh I was wondering where your Tony Pena hating a.. was_
The thing I hate is when people like you decide to recklessly throw down the race card when there’s no substance to it.
I said last week that Valentine, Hillman, and Pena don’t have a chance at this job because Girardi and Mattingly are the two guys with the star power to replace Torre.
I guess I dismissed Valentine and Hillman because of race too, huh?
Just because you are promoting Pena’s candidacy primarily because of his ethnic background doesn’t mean I’m dismissing him for the same reason.
Rudy coming out for the Red Sox?? Oh well,I really did’nt need another reason to not vote for him.
