Pena: “Yo, papi, where did you get that coat?”

Cashman: “Colter Bean left it. … Hold up, dog, I got a text.”

Does anyone else get the feeling that the media, the organization and the players think that the fans want Mattingly to be the next manager. It becomes apparent while readin this blog composed of some of the most knowledgeable yankee fans around that this just isnt the case. Perhaps just the ignorant masses want Mattingly but when it comes to the fans that count (the ones that eat, dream and live yankees,) it seems to me that Donnie Baseball just isnt the fan favorite in this scenario. I wish the media would realize that … and the organization for that matter.

  2. NJ October 24th, 2007 at 9:32 pm

Someone should tell “C-Money” that coat is a foot too long for him.

  3. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 24th, 2007 at 9:34 pm

Tony, dude, me gusta los pantalones!

  4. EricVA October 24th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

    New Manager:

    Yogi Berra

  5. #9 October 24th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

    Hey!

Anytime I go on a job interview I have to wear a nice blue suit and red tie.

How come these guys show up like they’re ready to go clubbing with Mr. Jeter??!!

  6. Phil - 27 in '08 October 24th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

Pena definitely wins the best dressed award for the interviews.

  7. li October 24th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

In a perfect world, Pena would get the nod.

  8. #9 October 24th, 2007 at 9:37 pm

I have only one word for Mr. Cashman:

    Rogaine

  9. Master Wangkee October 24th, 2007 at 9:38 pm

    Dave:

I talk to many Yankees fans offline. I’ve not heard one yet who approves of Mattingly over Girardi. They love Donnie but winning’s more important. The front office is much smarter than the masses give them credit for.

  10. Rockin' Rich October 24th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Time to forget about the comb-over, Money.

  11. J-Dawg October 24th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

A lot of walking for Cashman this week. It’s healthy and he has probably burned many calories. :)

  12. jennifer October 24th, 2007 at 9:41 pm

    #9- it is called *stress*

master- i’ve found the same thing too. Most Yankee fans and even none Yankee fans i’ve spoken to don’t want Donnie. They think Joe G will make a much better manager.

  13. ND Yank October 24th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

All of you who think Mattingly will fail as a manager will be disappointed.

  14. Master Wangkee October 24th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

    Jennifer:

You don’t have to call me ‘Master’. My real name is Wangkee.

  15. Dr. Acula October 24th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Let me throw this out there: maybe we should call/email Tampa tomorrow and let them now we want Girardi as manager and Pena as bench coach.

  16. #9 October 24th, 2007 at 9:46 pm

    “My real name is Wangkee”

I would try to keep that bit of information to myself if I was you.

  17. Master Wangkee October 24th, 2007 at 9:47 pm

My secret agent days have come to a halt.

  18. Dr. Acula October 24th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

_You don’t have to call me ‘Master’._

Jen, you can call me “master” ;)

  19. blackaccord October 24th, 2007 at 9:49 pm

cashman probably got the coat from Pavano.. The only return he got for the 40 mill..

  20. .i. October 24th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

that coat is ridiculous. if we had to choose the next manager based on how they dress, then tony pena would get the nod. but cashman is some bogart huh? jees.

  21. BBB October 24th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

I don’t think Mattingly would fail as a manager at all, but I’m still definitely more in favor of the Girardi as mgr, Pena as bench coach. And Cashmoney looks gangsta in the too-big coat!

  22. mary ellen October 24th, 2007 at 9:52 pm

I guess they don’t make men’s clothing in “Petite”, huh?

  23. J-Dawg October 24th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Cashman may have accidentally took that coat from Brian Bruney or Chris Britton.

  24. Andrea October 24th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

That is some MAJOR bling on Pena’s wrist!

  25. mel October 24th, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    #9,

Really, all Tony is missing are the rope chains, then his disco look would be complete!

Did C-Money not take a walk with Joe G.?

  26. J-Dawg October 24th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

    Have accidentally “taken,” sorry.

  27. #9 October 24th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

In Brian Cashman’s next contract, Randy Levine should include Cash achieving fashion sense as a bonus incentive.

  28. Andrea October 24th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

J-Dawg: look at you and your grammar correction. Strunk and White would be proud.

  29. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism October 24th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

  30. Frank from Norwalk October 24th, 2007 at 10:04 pm

Does the new manager have to dress C-Money every morning?

  31. Todd October 24th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

  32. jennifer October 24th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Jen- that could be some bad hairplugs.

  36. JohnM October 24th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

  37. Rocco October 24th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

eh. pena already looks like he has a blank stare on his face. THAT would get annoying really fast :P

  38. Gerry October 24th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Wangkee… Ive seen you’re work all over the YES boards.. didn’t you have some info that arod was getting traded in a 5 way deal?? haha..

Colter Bean? Looks more like Big Papi’s coat or Joba’s!

  39. RJ October 24th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    New Manager…Rudy G. !!! The TRAITOR ~~

  40. #9 October 24th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

    “Cash needs Giuseppe Franco.”

Only Giuseppe Franco can decide if Cash needs Giuseppe Franco!

  41. Evil Fox News Shill October 24th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

Anibal Sanchez and Josh Johnson just called from the operating table. They wanted you guys to know that Girardi may not be the best thing for Joba and Phil….

  42. pat October 24th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Pena must read this blog. We said Mattingly should have rocked the pinstripes yesterday and Pena shows up in pinstripe pants today. HI TONY!!!

  43. Bob Michaels October 24th, 2007 at 10:32 pm

    Girardi lacks GRAVITAS

  44. JohnM October 24th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Giuseppe Franco doesn’t know anything about Giuseppe Franco.

  45. Rocco October 24th, 2007 at 10:37 pm

    I’m into nuggets y’all

  46. DMan October 24th, 2007 at 10:39 pm

So much for those Rockies. To much of a layover, there out of their groove. They had a slim chance to begin with. Oh well.

Boy living in boston will be fun for the next year or so..

  47. Andrea October 24th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

I still say wait until Manny has to lumber himself around the vastness of left field out in Colorado. And you’ll either have no Ortiz or no Youkilis. It’ll be a different game.

  48. Jonathon October 24th, 2007 at 10:50 pm

You had to expect this in Game 1.

Rockies not playing in over a week.

    Beckett on the mound.

Red Sox swinging the bats well.

Series isn’t over yet but it’s going to be tough to beat Beckett.

My prediction is Sox in six.

  49. Joey Bagadonuts October 24th, 2007 at 10:51 pm

Hank Steinbrenner says the decision will be made by Cashman and “the baseball guys”

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10.....f=baseball

  50. DMan October 24th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

    Andrea-

I don’t know. You know me, I was pretty optimistic all season long with the Yanks..

But I don’t know how the Rockies win. Take a look at their eyes in the batters box and in the field. They’re all wide-eyed. They look like deers in the headlights.

I think they were on a wicked hot streak, and now they’ve leveled out. They can’t win like that.

  51. Brandon (Tony Pena for 08') October 24th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

Joey Bagadonuts – Thank god it means Tony Pena has a damn chance !!!

    LETS GO TONY !!! :D

  52. Andrea October 24th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

DMan: True. But from what I hear, they are a good team. They took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox before, and they swept the Yankees. They were star struck today, sure, but that wears off. I don’t think the Red Sox will play very well in Coors Field. I’m not saying the Rockies will win, but I don’t think the whole series will be as one sided as this game makes it seem.

I could be wrong. I have been before :)

  53. ryan October 24th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

Say the choice is Girardi. What type of chance is there that Mattingly, like Pena, would want to stick around? Would Girardi even want him?

  54. Rocco October 24th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

red sox have to win 2 so that the rockies can win in 6 and make fenway silent :)

  55. jaewon October 24th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

Looks like Cashman has been going for some of those Laser Hair Removal For Men! treatments.

  57. DMan October 24th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

I just don’t know. Ill admit I haven’t watched the Rockies much, but they just look lost.

I mean these are young kids on this team.. How do they just pull it together and suddenly get as hot as they were?

    I just don’t see it..

  58. Paul9 October 24th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

Rocks are going to be buried…

  59. Jonathon October 24th, 2007 at 11:04 pm

    7 runs…sheesh…and that’s all with 2 outs.

Worst part for the Rockies, their already 3 pitchers into the bullpen and it’s only the end of the fifth inning.

Not gonna get it done, not against a top American League lineup.

  60. BRags October 24th, 2007 at 11:06 pm

I think they are going to POUND schilling tomorrow. schilling has garbage stuff now. The indians were way too tight in game 6 to do anything off him. he was throwing meatballs down the plate and those hitters did nothing. I expect the Rockies to be aggressive and pound schilling tomorrow.

  61. Andrea October 24th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

I’m just not willing to say they’re going to get buried yet. Not with the Red Sox being forced to play at that field in Colorado. Not with Manny being forced to run around that left field.

  62. Mark October 24th, 2007 at 11:09 pm

Having a team wait around for 8 days to play is an atrocity. How do you expect a team to stay sharp. Typical garbage under Seligs watch. Redsux stay on top of their game with a ridiclous 7 game schedule where they had too many days off in between games while the Rockies already clinched and had to sit around. BP and throwing bullpen sessions can’t compare to intense game situations. Selig should be fired!!!!!!!!!!

  63. DMan October 24th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

    Mark-

There was just no way around it.. I mean the Sox had to play 7, and the rockies swept.

Its just to bad that the Rockies actually playing great baseball is going to hurt them in the end because of the long lay over..

  64. Jonathon October 24th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

D-man…that’s just the thing. The Rockies are a good team that got hot at just the right time.

They also had a lot of help and got a lot of breaks at the end of the regular season.

Unfortunately their ‘hotness’ got them into trouble. By winning the NLCS in 4 games, they had such a long layoff…they probably lost some of that momentum.

We’ll never know if the layoff hurt them because Beckett has been so dominant and probably would’ve done this to any team. But it could’ve been a factor.

Well my hope this winter all the so-called NYY fans move on just like their beloved St. Bloe did

“Why does nomaas have a link to this thread under the heading of “Please get your own materialâ€??”

Because No Maas originated the Ca$hmoneyâ„¢ eponym.

  72. Dr. Acula October 25th, 2007 at 2:58 am

    Matthew Reed-

All niceties to Donnie aside, this is the key paragraph of the NYT article

“If the baseball guys are unanimous or near it, that’s the way you’ve got to go, he said.

  73. RockinDaBronx October 25th, 2007 at 3:34 am

T-Pen knows what time it is,tight slacks always works in a mans favor. Coulter Bean reference Ay Dios Mio! love it.

  74. Peter Abraham October 25th, 2007 at 4:28 am

    Whoa:

NoMaas originated that? That would be news to Kevin Towers and Billy Beane, who have been calling Brian that for about five years now. NoMaas been around that long?

What those guys don’t know is that Cashman actually likes hip-hop, which is where the nickname came from.

People who actually know Brian call him that and have for years.

Beyond that, why would I steal from a bunch of people who are afraid to use their own names on their “work” ?

  75. Green Tea Torre October 25th, 2007 at 7:37 am

this post is a blatant rip on nomaas’ material. it’s pretty obvious if you ever read nomaas. not because you’re using the nickname, but the overall feel of these latest posts. and it’s totally out of character from anything you’ve ever written before.

this place is going downhill fast. i don’t know what to expect next. first, we had more posts about joe torre’s departure than when the yankees were actually playing baseball. and now this? it’s really hard to consider any of this “reporting” at this point. it’s clear since torre left that there is a strong agenda here, and the way it gets played out lacks any journalistic integrity.

  76. Jeter's Future Wife October 25th, 2007 at 7:52 am

    Hey Green Tea

everyone has their opinion and what better place to share it! get over yourself, this blog hasn’t gone downhill, you’re not going to read everything and agree with it and oh by the way, not everyone on this blog has a degree in Journalism – good luck with your criticism elsewhere!

  77. Taylor October 25th, 2007 at 8:18 am

I just want to say that I had a good laugh at the Colter Bean joke. Well done!

  78. Taylor October 25th, 2007 at 8:20 am

Green Tea Torre: How about if you don’t like this website, you don’t look at it? Not too difficult tough guy.

And by the way, Torre leaving was a huge story, so I’d hope Abraham would write a lot about it.

  79. lmk October 25th, 2007 at 8:47 am

C-Money isn’t hip hop. Just sayin.

  80. Anthony October 25th, 2007 at 9:00 am

Cash Money, C-Money, whatever you want to call it is a dumb nickname anyway, so nobody should be falling all over themselves trying to take credit for it.

  81. Pat October 25th, 2007 at 10:01 am

Green Tea Torre probably works for nomaas and if he doesn’t then he’s stealing their material as well! They’re always making fun of him for his green tea lol As for them coming up with the names C-Money, Ca$hMoney, whatever, etc. etc. uhh that’s not exactly difficult to think up on your own… I was calling him that way back in college during the 4 rings years because it sounded catchy. BEFORE nomaas existed. Maybe I should say they overheard me and stole my Cashman nickname? Trying to take credit for something so simple is like a random person seeing a cartoon of a Rabbit named Bugs or a mouse named Mickey for the first time and then proclaiming, “hey I’m gonna call him Bugs Bunny and him Mickey Mouse! I was the first person to think of that!” seriously… I love the nomaas website but give me a break…

Green Tea Torre lists his e-mail as “Joe@Yankees.com”

Another internet hero who loves to rip people but doesn’t want to be challenged.

Joe Torre drinks green tea, hilarious! Right, his doctors advised him to do it when he got cancer.

  85. Christine October 25th, 2007 at 11:23 am

Yeah, I definitely agree that Tony wins the best dressed for the interview award!

  86. JFH October 25th, 2007 at 11:32 am

NoMaas is a joke. They were overly fixated on Torre. They are overzealous in protection of A-Rod. They rip anyone with whom they disagree or who makes a mistake.

If you look at their comments over the year, they clearly make bad judgments too. Just go back and look at some of their postings through the year.

Most of all, they lack class.

Pete’s blog is clearly superior in every way and he will actually put his name on his work and reply to your questions.

    Thank you Pete.

  87. G. Love October 25th, 2007 at 11:34 am

“Pete’s blog is clearly superior in every way and he will actually put his name on his work and reply to your questions. ”

ok, but Pete puts his name on it b/c it is his primary job and he gets paid for it.

how would your employers feel if they saw you posting here all day with your real name?

it’s the same reason that everyone here uses a code name: we don’t want to get fired. it’s unreasonable to expect otherwise.

except for me of course, my real name is Hmmm Johnson.

  89. JFH October 25th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

    Rich:

  92. #9 October 25th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

NoMass should change it’s name to NoTorre…

Like most message boards out there, everyday it’s the same thing – uninformed information followed by the usual flame wars…

Pete is a real reporter with great insight. His reporting for Journal News is excellent – the fact that he has this blog and allows us to be part of it is just a plus as far as I’m concerned.

  93. Vincent Antonini October 25th, 2007 at 12:49 pm

I have to agree big-time with Pete for calling out those NoMaas guys on hiding behind their internet anonymity. You can’t take a website seriously when nobody is willing to put their name and face on it. NoMaas.org is a great place for teenagers and newjack Yankees fans to get together and curse at the Red Sox and Joe Torre.

Pete is willing to respond to comments and stands behind his writing. Joke websites should be ignored or laughed at, but not taken seriously.

Anybody can get a lot of attention on the internet by saying outrageous things and appealing to people who enjoy LCD humor.

  94. #9 October 25th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

The only way I found out about NoMaas is because Pete had it as a link on this blog.

I checked it out once and that was enough – heven’t gone back since.

  95. Kurt October 25th, 2007 at 1:14 pm

C – Money ought to be puttin’ a little more gel on that do of his, considering all the jack he’s got. I’m out. Oh, sorry this isn’t Rome.

  96. Girardi October 25th, 2007 at 1:19 pm

    > Pete is willing to respond to comments and stands behind his writing.

I think the biggest problem people have with PA is:

    1. He goes on personal crusades to either attack certain players (Alex) or defend others to the death (Torre). It’s his blog, and that’s his right. And obviously his editors don’t care either. A blog doesn’t have to be objective, but it does explain why people have a problem with *Pete*, and not his articles, per se.

    2. He flip flops and waffles. (His opinion, that is; I have no idea what he wears or eats – though it wouldn’t be hard to imagine him eating waffles and walking around in flip-flops. But I digest.) Moreoever, he seems to think no one will notice or remember.

    3. He’s admittedly not even a Yankees fan. This is just his job. And, sure, that’s ok. Nevertheless, the point still stands: many are going to take everything he says with a proverbial “grain of salt” and constantly wonder about hidden agendas and so forth. His worship of the Pats makes him all the more suspect.

    4. He’s got a very thin skin. (Again, I’m obviously speaking very metaphorically.) This just gets annoying.

Things I do like about the blog:

    1. Timely scoops and breaking tidbits. The commentary I just mentally filter out. (For example, Pete’s opinion today that Mattingly definitely has the job.)

    2. And, no shame here, but I also worship Springsteen (left wing politics be damned).

  97. saucy October 25th, 2007 at 1:53 pm

i find it hilarous when people say Pete “attacks” a-rod…

  98. PMarcig October 25th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

Since when is posting pictures and making up captions about them the sole property of any one blogger. It was “out of character”? So what!? It’s not supposed to be an objective, professional vehicle for superior journalistic reporting. It can be whatever he wants it to be. It’s a FREAKING BLOG! And it’s the best Yankee one out there.

    Blog on Pete.

I tried to e-mail you but of course you made up an address.

Anyway, a Yankees fan would not do a good job of covering the team. You want me cheering or being a reporter? I like the Patriots because I grew up in New England and my dad had season tickets. If that’s a crime, I’m guilty. Again, what difference does that make?

Right, I have a secret Red Sox agenda. I went into journalism, spent 25 years in the business and moved to New York to torment Yankee fans. You got me. My brilliant plan has been exposed. Here’s some news for you: I covered a Red Sox game when I was 21, they were an incredible bunch of bad guys and I have had little time for them since.

Meanwhile, maybe I do have a thin skin. But in the course of writing about the Yankees – a baseball team – I had the classy folks at NoMaas suggest A-Rod screwed my mother. I also had people make other vile comments about my family, including little children.

People go to your work and do that to you?

Read my stories in the paper. I don’t have any crusades or agendas. I cover the team. But when I write the blog, I write to evoke emotion and get people talking and drive traffic to the site. It’s an experiment and it seems to be working.

I get paid the exact same way whether the Yankees win or lose. I don’t care who plays for them or manages the team. I care about reporting the news and getting it right. My loyalty is to my newspaper.

    Meanwhile, Springsteen rocks.

I did not know other GMs called him that too… that is great.

nomaas.org has, i would assume by now, 100,000,000 hits. thats a joke, im sure. also, and the yankee fans on their know alot more about baseball than most people. out of all yankee sports site, they may know the most. but since they are harsh it makes them “morons”. Ok

    Pete,

I just want to say that you do a great job with this blog and provide a terrific service. Thank you very much for giving fans a forum to express our opinions.

I’m not pandering to Pete here because I do disagree with him on a number of things. But differences of opinion are what makes being a sports fan so much fun. We are all entitled to our opinions. It’s just too bad that people sometimes take their differences of opinion to another level and become disrespectful.

You certainly deserve beter than some of the comments that come your way. Thanks for not throwing the baby out with the bath water and saying that’s enough, I quit.

By the way, are you out of your mind about not letting broadcasters vote for post season awards??? What makes you so smart, huh???:)

“Girardi” and others like Girardi (or may be all of you are the same person, I don’t know)

Please stop saying people have a problem with Pete b/c of this or people don’t respect Pete’s opinions b/c of that. I don’t think it’s far-fetched to assume that most people who frequent this blog appreciate the blogger and what he has to say. So please stop trying to represent “the people”.

And with our team’s disappointing early playoff exit and the state of flux right now, can we all just focus on the positives, like, rotation for next year, coaching staff, etc? I’m not saying everyone has to agree on everything, of course not, but can we talk about real baseball/productive stuff than why the blogger sucks? It’s completely uncalled for, disrespectful and frankly boring.

I for one am more interested in hearing more about the two new Yankees from the Isreali League than all your complaints. You don’t like it, go start your own blog and stay away from this one.

_out of all yankee sports site, they may know the most._

i think it’s time to get your head out of your ass…

Other than the timely good laugh from the front page, I think nomaas is a waste of time.

I don’t agree with Peter quite often, and his blog is more opinionated than his news accounts. That’s to be expected. But I’ll sooner turn here than to nomaas.

I’m sure the folks who run that site are good, devoted and somewhat knowledgeable fans. But their easy solutions are easy to put pen to paper when you’re anonymous and not accoutable.

    It’s a fan blog.
Some would call it a good one.

Personally, I don’t care for it and I find the commentary on nomaas inange.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

    Correction:

    inane, not inange. Oops. :)

  107. Dan October 25th, 2007 at 4:22 pm

Honestly, **** NoMaas. A bunch of driveling, annoying, self-righteous and entitled “fans” who reinforce every negative stereotype about Yankee fans. Plus these really knowledgeable guys gave originally gave the Mussina extension an “A”, (and gave F’s to the Jason Marquis and Gil Meche signings) loved the Farnsworth, Myers and Vilone signings (later claiming that the Yanks have no idea how to build a bullpen), thought Brian Bruney should be the Yanks main setup man and thought Giambi should be the regular first baseman. If they had $200 Million to burn, the Yankees would be bankrupt.

  108. pkdkdks October 25th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

Dan, I bet you booed A-Rod and still thinks Joe Torre should be our manager.

Name me 1 sabermetric stat and what it means and how you formulate it

  109. Kenny October 25th, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Nomaas is an entertaining site but their insight is terrible. It reads like they just read moneyball and think they know everything about baseball now. They do have very funny photoshop jobs when the Yanks play the Sox.

They have a fixation with bashing Torre for everything that goes wrong. Yes, Torre is bad at handling the bullpen but what else can you fault him for this year. Cashman puts the team together but he gets a pass.

Keep up the good work, Pete.

  110. Kenny October 25th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

Also, I cheered A-Rod and have also been critical of Torre. Just getting that out there before a nomaas troll calls me out.

  111. The Monarch October 25th, 2007 at 5:29 pm

Seriously, I just checked out their site and the link here.

They need to get over themselves. His name is CASHMAN…is it really that hard to believe that more than one person may have come up with “C-Money?”

Reminds me of the scene in Rocky I, when the newsreporter asks him if other boxers trained in meatlockers and pounding raw meat.

Rocky’s response, “No, I think I invented it.”

  112. Dan October 25th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

pkdkdks, ERA+ (a stat that you guys seem to be obsessed with) is an ERA based on a pitcher’s home park and the league he plays in, where 100 is used as the average. I’d be lying if I could tell you the math involved, but then again I don’t pretend that I’m the foremost expert on the subject either.

I think Torre should have been fired in 2005 (arguably 2004, for starting Kevin Brown in Game 7 of the ALCS), but also that the Yankees brass dealt with in a completely classless way. And yeah, I booed A-Rod in 2006 because he played like a goddamn dog.
