Girardi says it would be a privilege
Joe Girardi was in Manhattan tonight for the ALS charity dinner. Brian Heyman of the Journal News was there and relayed these comments:
“The only thing I’m going to comment on about the Yankees situation is what I said two days ago. I had a great interview, and it’s an honor for whoever gets that job. Managing in the big leagues is an honor as well as a privilege.”
Old friend David Cone was on hand as well. He was, as always, happy to talk:
“I think whoever the new manager is going to be is going to be pretty lucky. The Yankees are a great team, a great organization and have tremendous resources,” he said.
“I don’t think you can lose with whoever you choose. Don Mattingly would be a great choice; Joe Girardi would be a great choice. Tony Pena as well. I’m glad I don’t have to make that choice.”

ALS = Lou Gehrig’s Disease
See, Girardi bleeds pinstripes!!
I’m really pulling for Joe!! I like his answers, I like that he thinks he had a great interview. Unlike Donnie, um I think I did okay. BE FORCEFULL I think I did GREAT!! I got my point across etc.
Hip Hip for Joe!
Game 1 is about to begin. Let there be a moment of silence on this blog for the Yankees and their absence from the Fall Classic.
My source has a contact in the Yankees organization. He tells me Girardi’s the frontrunner. He’s been right on a number of Yankees transactions this past season. I won’t go into great detail about him so…. Take it for what it’s worth. Girardi’s the right choice.
I hope the red sox lose the WS at home so i can see some fans cry
Red SOS in the WS.
This is why baseball blows.
Can FOX ever start the Freakin GAME on time?!!!
I am hoping that Joe Girardi gets the selection. But i have a feeling that the powers that be will select Mattingly and are basing some of their decision on a Public Relations angle. They just lost a very popular and successful mgr in Torre and what better way to replace him than with another popular yankee in Don Mattingly. However, if Mattingly has a terrible year(s), who do they go back too then? Joe Girardi will land a Mgr’s job somewhere this off season. Another reason why they should pick Girardi is he will bring a different personality to the managers position than Mattingly would. Mattingly i believe will be too much Torre like and if that is indeed true, then why get rid of Torre in the first place. Also- I think Tony Pena, who is a tremendous asset as a coach, will remain in that capacity for either Joe G or Mattingly. His answer that he is proud to wear the yankees uniform (and who wouldn’t) and would like to return as a coach if he isn’t chosen as the manager i think he realizes this is a two horse race. Lets hope that on friday, the little Steins announce Joe G as the new manager.
Wow, it is really really hard to watch the Red Sox in the World Series in Fenway…
So what is everyone doing for halloween? I’m going grecian and making my costume myself! What about you?
I”m not even watching the game. I’ll flip and catch the score but that is about it.
A-Rod does not want Girardi. Mattingly will be the manager.
Rockies have no chance
Why does A-Rod not want Girardi?
In my opinion, Girardi is so clearly the best choice it’s not even a competition. He is really only competing against a name. You shouldn’t hire a name. You should hire a manager.
Can’t go wrong with any of them.
Josh Beckett is showing why we have to make Joba a starter. You know 9/10 times he is gonna be good for at least 2 wins in a playoff series. Joba has the stuff and mental makeup to be an ace. Its all about him being able to throw 95 in the 8th inning.
I made the choice.It`s Donnie.
The Sox might sweep the Rocks
No one knows that A-Rod doesn’t want Girardi.
But even if that’s true. So what? To let him veto the best choice is absurd (and I am a strong A-Rod supporter).
Just 5 minutes into this game I’m already feeling sick to the stomach. I hope the Pedroia homer has the same ending as the Johnny D homer in our ALDS game 1.
whoa, I agree with you, but that wasn’t the first person I’d heard/seen say that A-Rod was anti-Girardi. Am I missing something?
Don Mattingly is a TRUE YANKEE, HE BLEEDS PINSTRIPES.Sorry No CUB or BUC for me.
Bob Michaels:
Stop making crap up and spreading false rumors. You’ve been warned.
Donnie is not ready for this job. If the Yankees let emotion and sentiment get in the way, they are mking a HUGE mistake. Girardi is by FAR more qualified to manage the team. In today’s Post there was a story about Matttingly taking BP at 8:00 in the morning after a nite game before a day game, does he think he will get the same dedication from todays players? He wiil end up like Ted williams or Larry Bird, his frustration with the player not being able to work at the level that he did will eat him up, he motivated himself I don’t think he can motivate others. I’m a Mets fan and Girardi would be the choice of 80% of the league if they had an opening
Why would the Rockies pitch to Manny with 1st base open?? The Rockies Bubble has burst
If A-Rod had commented on any of the manager options it would have been front page news.
I’m guessing this has to do with people saying A-Rod didn’t get along with Buck and people are saying Girardi is controlling like Buck.
Bob Michaels:
LOL. You got served.
Enough. It’s like the election for Senior Class president already. The Principal will post the results by last period Friday. Now get back to your homework or you’ll get detention.

Don’t forget to post some “party pics”:http://i9.photobucket.com/albu.....greeks.jpg
I’m not watching the WS (and I won’t), but the Rockies haven’t played in forever. I wouldn’t put much stock in one road game.
Gee, no Cub or Buc for someone.
Let’s see.
Miller Huggins came from the Cardinals.
Joe McCarthy came from the Cubs.
Casey Stengel managed the Brooklyn Dodgers and Boston Braves before he managed the Yankees.
Joe Torre managed the Mets, Braves and Cardinals before the Yankees.
Need I say more?
So Pete,
I don’t know if you have seen my posts in an earlier thread today, but I would be interested in your thoughts on Mattingly’s failure to argue a clearly erroneous call in a game in early May when he was acting manager (Torre was suspended for one game). It was a slide into second base and Cano tagged Bloomquist at least two or three feet before the bag. The ump called him safe. Mattingly stayed in the dugout, Bloomquist scored (tying the game) and the Yankees lost to a HR in the ninth.
There was some assertion that Mattingly stayed in the dugout because he did not want to embrass Torre. That makes no sense. He is managing the game. A mistake was made at a critical point in the game and Mattingly did nothing. I know it is only one play, but it is still a managerial test failed by Mattingly.
I recall Donnie saying, The call wouldn’t have been changed, so thats why I didn’t argue (something along those lines).
Also I’d be curious to know what changed in 4 months, when they were in Colordo he was interviewed and stated that he was in the tunnel for 3 years, and only a bench coach for 2, why is he ready now?
One reason you dispute calls is to get the next call.
“There was some assertion that Mattingly stayed in the dugout because he did not want to embrass Torre.”
Mattingly said himself after the game that he did not go out to argue because he did not want to appear to be showing up Torre. Mattingly said he would have argued if he had been the full time manager but he was in a no win situation in regards if he argued or not.
Mattingly didn’t have to argue. All he had to do was go out and ask if another umpire saw the play differently.
Mike S.-
Girardi played for the Cubs!
Pena played for the Bucs!
Beca,
Loved the “10 commandments of being a true Yankee fan” on your blog…good stuff
#9: But that makes no sense. How are you showing up Torre by going out to the ump when a bad call is made? No wait! Not a bad call…. ONE OF THE WORST CALLS OF THE SEASON. If that was the real reason he didn’t go out, it shows poor judgment. The important thing is winning the game!
Jennifer: The belief that the call wouldn’t change is yet another terrible reason not to go out there. First, calls are changed. Stranger things have happened. Second, there are reasons you point these things out to the umpire right away. If I recall correctly, this was the first game of a series. There was an inning and a couple of games left with this umpire crew. Umpires have a way of making things even — or at least being more careful.
Whoa: Correct on both counts… and far shorter than my posts.
Out of good conscience and absolute dedication as a tried and true Yankee fan, I haven’t watched one pitch of a major league baseball game since the final out of the Yankees last game. I cannot and will not.
Until a decision has been reached on the next field manager of the Yankees, sales of bromides will continue to skyrocket.
Fourth quarter sales have already exceeded those of any recorded in the last twelve years with yet two months of sales not realized. Simply phenomenal.
Dr.
Like I don’t know that?
The point is, the Yankees best managers came from elsewhere.
I also question Donnie’s aggressiveness or lack of it on the Cano play. This could also be from lack of experience, which will determine ballgames, especially in the playoffs.
I think Cashman favors Girardi but he could lose his job if Yanks dont make playoffs. Yanks are afraid of losing Donnie if Joe gets the job. Does anyone think Donnie would take the AAA job for a year or so to gain some experience?
