I don't know if he would be my choice, but I'm sure Mattingly will be fine as manager.

I just hope he's chosen for the right reasons, and not for concern about the appearance of allegegly running Torre and Mattingly out of town in the same week.

If it's him, I want it because he's the right man for the job.

Should read "He traded walks for power, especially when he was younger, but he absolutely controlled the strike zone."

Whoa -

"I would think it’s an obvious point. We know how Girardi deploys personnel. We know how he uses a bullpen. We have seen him employ in game strategies. We know nothing about Mattingly’s ability to handle those situations except his words. I choose action over words."

Yeah, and Girardi absolutely abused his young pitchers that one year. He may not have had their usage directed but he allowed it to happen too. ANd if he needs personnel decisions made for him, then he's no more "experienced" than DB. Hilarious though that people keep making a big deal out of that one year in a small market with a young team.

"By citing Tore as an example you have rebutted your own argument and made my point in the process.

Of course, the Yankees will eventually fire any manager, but they will delay much longer to fire someone like Mattingly, thereby wasting precious time. That could translate into an extra season or two of bad managing."

Uh, Torre had won four rings and six pennants in the eight preceding years. If Mattingly ever gets that accomplished, I should hope he gets an even longer leash. Mattingly will get a three-deal. That's neither too long or too short.

Further, you're still relying on a BIG assumption - that Mattingly WILL fail. And you're just afriad of that happening but nothing to go on. Look, Donnie Baseball isn't afraid of failing, so why are you? I prefer to think about how amazing it will be when he gets that ring. And both view points mean nothing right now, and they certainly aren't a reason to avoid hiring a guy, especially not one with his work ethic, demeanor, and NY savvy.

"You are talking about intangibles, which have value, but I think tangibles are what won the four rings, and plate discipline was a cornerstone of that plan."

What part of "Mattingly had plate discipline" don't you understand. He absolutely controlled the strike zone. He traded power for walks, especially when he was younger, but he absolutely controlled the strike zone. And every player I cited did the same - tangibles and intangibles went together with Donnie Baseball. How old are you any ways? Do you even remember 1985 - 1987? It's got to be all these twenty year olds making all this noise for Girardi.

You're absolutely right, "Drive 4-5"...How DARE I talk about anything but managerial speculation! As if it hasn't been beaten to death all week....

I did hear about the Israeli League baseball signings - an outfielder and a catcher. the catcher, Rodriquez (28) started his professional baseball career in the Red Sox organization.
Also, guess which Vice President of a NY baseball organization is on the Board of Advisors for the Israeli Baseball League? Ya think it had something to do with those two signings?

I heard WFAN's Fatso and the Mad Cow report that Yankee Management has requested permission from the Commish to announce their deals during the World Series. Sweeny Murti was interviewed and he also felt that an announcement (of the manager) would be made by Friday. He also feels strongly that Mattingly will be named, reasoning that they would not have interviewed him if he was to be rejected. Two "icons" rejected in two weeks would not be good PR, I guess.

Dee said: "Hank Steinbrenner: Asked if he was leaving to meet with C-Money, he said: “I’ve got other stuff, not just the Yankees.

What? What other stuff? Like horses?? You can’t run the team unless you think the world revolves around the Yankees."

LOL. No kidding. What impeccable timing young Hank has in saying that right now. If anything, these guys need a couple of courses in PR. Something along the lines of "What to Say, When to Say It, and When to Keep Your Trap Shut."

Truth be told, I'd prefer if Mattingly would agree to manage AAA for a year or two before accepting a managerial position of a ML club. *BUT* I'm not going to rule him out for lack thereof. Plus, it's not like Girardi's success with the Marlins would translate to the Yankees (ala Pinella success didn't translate from the M's to the Drays or Dusty Baker from the Giants to the Cubs).

As everyone keeps pointing out, Girardi had as much or less than Mattingly when he accepted the position for the Marlins. Same with Randolph and the Mets. Just because it's the Yankees, doesn't mean Mattingly doesn't have to tools to succeed. That said, I'd prefer Girardi, but not to the point of being disappointed if it's Mattingly... quite the contrary, I'd be happy with both. But in either case, I'm willing to wait it out before passing judgement.
