Yankees: No decision yet

October
25

Statement from Howard J. Rubenstein, spokesman for The New York Yankees:

“There has been widespread speculation about who the next manager of The New York Yankees will be. The evaluation process is continuing and there will be no immediate decision or announcement.

As to what “immediate” means, that’s a good question.

Teams are not allowed to make major announcements during the World Series unless commissioner Bud Selig grants permission. There is a chance an announcement could come Friday, an off-day for the Series. The earliest end to the Rockies-Red Sox would be Sunday; if the Series goes seven games, Game 7 would be next Thursday.

“We’re going to honor Bud’s wishes, and that’s the bottom line,” Hank Steinbrenner, son of owner George Steinbrenner, said Thursday from Tampa, Fla., where he and other team executives including general manager Brian Cashman gathered to come up with a recommendation for the team’s top officials. “We’ll talk to the baseball office and see what they think.”

Hank Steinbrenner said no decision has been made from the interviewed crop of Girardi, bench coach Don Mattingly and first-base coach Tony Pena. Girardi interviewed on Monday, Mattingly on Tuesday and Pena on Wednesday. ”

    Just to clarify.

That whole post was a quote from the article: To read the full article click on the link.

Title of the article is “Sources: Developing opportunity for Girardi in L.A.”

  3. DC

Please no Mattingly! He is so underqualified it is not funny. What a BIG mistake it would be to bring him on. Do the Steinbrennr’s actually think he is an upgrade over Torre. We need Girardi.

“Hank Steinbrenner said no decision has been made from the interviewed crop of Girardi, bench coach Don Mattingly and first-base coach Tony Pena.”

This only increases Randy Levine’s chance of being selected as next skipper.

  5. Chicago Dave

All this means is that they haven’t finished negotiating all the terms of Mattingly’s deal yet.

  6. JonMichel

Mattingly came out as the favorite but now it looks like the Yankees are second guessing themselves and probably will go with Girardi after Dodgers situation.

  7. JohnnyC

The problem for Mattingly is this – He was originally supposed to succeed Joe in a peaceful transition. Now that there is not a peaceful transition, it will be expected that he “do things differently.” That is a real challenge for a guy that has been Joe’s bench coach, admired him, and did things his way. It will test his credibility with some of the players to change things up.

I love Donnie – but the Boss has set a messy stage for him. He is better equipped to manage in the minors right now and then come back – but that won’t happen. When you get an opportunity, you must take it.

  8. .i.

selig should be careful and not bite the hand that feeds. the yankees aren’t the devil rays. we should get to announce whatever we want to announce, whenever our team wants to announce it and that is final, that is unless of course selig doesn’t like all the money the yankees contribute to mlb.

  9. Dave

a 200 million dollar payroll doesnt have to win the world series every yr – that is obviously not going to happen. But when the highest payroll in baseball times two cant even win the alds three yrs in a row and hasnt won a world series in seven, its not bad luck. It means the wrong decision are being made, the wrong players are being signed and money is being wasted and practically flushed down the toilet. People are right, torre really isnt the one to be blamed. His decision in the post-season didnt help but it wasnt the in game decisions that destroyed us, it was the construction of the bullpen, the bench and most importantly, the staarting rotation. Spending 8 million on Igawa, 10 million on wright, 8 million on farnsworthless and a pro-rated 28 million on clemens certainly didnt help us win. The 20 plus million going to giambi didnt help either. Nope torre isnt the reason we arent winning, cashman is. I dunno when the time comes when cash can start taking some blame.

  10. Jonathon

    Dave…exactly…

I guess some people just can’t stand when others tell them their baby is ugly.

But that was the problem with the Yankees the last few years, and unfortunately Torre had to take the fall.

That having been said, I think this team has a lot of promising young pitching which should lead to better postseason results over the next few years.

  11. Pauly One

I read that as: We offered a contract to one guy, but the candidate and his agent are mulling it over because contract has some fine print on the bottom that specifies who his bench and pitching coach are.

  12. kasey

and the soap opera continues. meanwhile, two teams are still playing.

keep trying to remain relevant, guys. it’s adorable.

  13. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

How funny would it be if it ended up being Peña? Not a knock on Peña; any other team and he’s have probably already locked up the job, but he’s the dark horse, by far, in this case.

It’d be like the Colorado Rockies winning the National League Penn…

    ...Oh.

  14. Giuseppe Franco

    Dave,

You don’t get it. How can we just assume the way Mattingly would manage this team?

Yes, he has a laid back personality. So what? Does that mean he’s a pushover too?

Mattingly has never been the man in charge so we have no idea what kind of manager he’s going to be.

Under Torre, neither Willie Randolph nor Joe Girardi were getting into people’s faces when they had the bench coach gig.

We didn’t see that kind of hardass attitude from them until they got their own gigs and became the men in charge.

How are you so sure Mattingly isn’t going to have that kind of fire in his belly as well?

You are simply speculating on something in which you have no idea what you’re talking about.

  15. Todd

If they are still deciding, that means Girardi is still in the running! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Yankee Fan in Boston

Wow, people are reading a lot into this. They aren’t going to announce anything until a contract is done and the league agrees to it—that could take a little bit of time.

  17. RJ

Forrest Jensen is now in the running for the Manager’s position.

  18. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

Martin Jol got sacked from Tottenham today. That’s the only news that counts today. LOL! COME ON YOU REDS!!!!

  19. Mike S.

I take Mike and the Mad Dog with a grain of salt, but one scenario they threw out is interesting.

Suppose the baseball faction (Cashman, Michael, Oppenheimer) suggest Girardi but the Steinbrenners favor Mattingly? Could that be happening?

    Just saying.

  20. J-Dawg

It’s very possible that the big announcement could wait until after the World Series, because the last thing that the Yankees need would be to draw the wrath of Dud Selig. OOH, not that.

  21. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Mehdi: Whoo! COME ON YOU REDS!! Indeed!

  22. JDnotDrew

I thought I saw smoke signals but it was just burnt toast.Crap, maybe tommorrow. Keep your eyes peeled fellow bloggers.

  23. Dee

They may be negotiating a contract with Girardi while figuring out a fancy title for Mattingly’s next front office job.

  24. RJPinstripes

Dah Boss hand-picked Mattingly 4 years agao! I think that will be it! The young Steinbrenners swill honor their father’s choice! Too bad, but that’s it! I think at this particular time qwe would be much better off with Girardi. But, it won’t happen.

  25. Dr. Acula

TAMPA – (AP) Black smoke exited a chimney atop Mons Venus gentlemen’s club Thursday, indicating the process to select the 32nd manager of the New York Yankees continues.

  26. Don Capone (DesignatedBlogger)

I still think Torre will be back.

  27. nathan

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/25/sports/baseball/25chass.html?_r=2&ref=sports&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

Apparently Joe had incentives to win 90, 94, 98 games.. in his previous contracts.. he also had incentives to win division, LCS, WS…

oh oh…we have a credibility problem for Joe Green T..

is it mere coincidence that article was not linked here ??

  28. catya

    Dr acula ,Hehehehe!!

  29. JohnnyC

Giuseppe – We don’t know how he will manage, but it is difficult for him to be “different” with the same group of guys he has been with. Girardi and Willie got to be different on different teams with different players. It makes a difference.

  30. Drive 4-5

Man, I cannot wait till this whole managerial fiasco is over. Everyone looks bad, including Joe Torre. It’s like watching a Yankeeography of the Howie Spira story.

  31. Dr. Acula

this is speculation, but this is what I think happened:

The baseball people unanimously recommended either pena or Girardi. Now the Mini-Steins are trying to find a way to break the news to Big Stein, who has a diamond-crush on Donnie.

  32. ORORO

.........blah blah blah…........Apparently Joe had incentives to win 90, 94, 98 games.. in his previous contracts.. he also had incentives to win division, LCS, WS…
oh oh…we have a credibility problem for Joe Green T

and the NY Times would never accept a false or misleading story from a source that really had a much different agenda and print it as gospel, now would it????!!!!

  33. catya

So much hoopla going on. Pick one already!
How many ‘brenners does it take to replace a mgr?All this drama for it to be Donnie.WE shoud be wondering who the new bench coach is.

  34. ORORO

they need a sports psychiatrist over this man crush on Donnie. It’s unhealthy

  35. VOIII

Pick on Cashman all you want. He is not resposible for half of the big F/A signings. He is however responsible for the Yankees bright future. He is the one who got the Yankees to throw big money at high risk high reward draft picks (See Joba and Kennedy)...He is the one who put Oppenheimer in charge of the draft. He is the one who rather than try to save his job and improve the team in a win now situation, held on to the kids when most of you were screaming to acquire Gagne….The fact that the Yankees roster was bloated with under-acheivers does not make sense when you have 3 locks for HOF, one very good shot at it, and some very promising young players….The Bullpens were not loaded with closers during their championship years they were loaded with guys who Torre could abuse with out their arm falling off. (See Stanton and Nelson) Both of whom were very ordinary pitchers away from the Yankees. I never said the Yankees should have won the WS every year only that they should have at least shown up during the post season. The Manager has to have some culpabilty there. The missmanagement in 03 only begins the story. 04 was horribly managed by Torre. Not bunting on Schilling, pitching to Ortiz in big spot after big spot…the rest is to painful to rehash…In 05 he emptied the tank to win a division. The bad start was the cause of that…06 He was again at fault when he juggled a line-up that had been producing…he moved the best player in the game to the 8 hole, he should have used Wang in game 4, instead he was in NYC waiting to pitch game 5 (Huge blunder). Sheff at 1st? come on… This year he ran into a hot team? where are they now? Why did he not pull the team of the field in game 2? Why did he not know that his ace was struggling in September? Petitte should have pitched game 1 Hughes game 2 Wang game 3 Moose game 4 Petitte game 5. The Team has taken on his passive nature. Where is the fight in them? Why do they get thrown at time and time again with no retaliation other than Rocket of course. The time for change was as clear as day regardless of how it went down.

  36. nathan

Their source is the MLB office.. where copies of contracts are maintained… if thats wrong.. we have a bigger problem !!

  37. gargoyle

Hopefully Cash has put the kibosh on the rush to hire Mattingly.

Girardi is the man for the job.

  38. longtime

well done VO111 well done it’s about time somebody gives cash his due How about THEO look at all of his blunders he didn’t even make the Beckett trade it was done during his hiatus, Lugo Drew Clement etc and they are about to win thier 2nd world championship in the last 4 years
