Meet the new Boss, same as the old Boss

Peter Abraham
October
26

Hank Steinbrenner spoke to the media gathering at Legends Field.

Via the AP, I heard his comments. The basics: They’re still in the decision-making process and no news is expected until after the weekend. It’s up to Brian Cashman, although the family still has a say.

Then there was this gem:

“What we’re looking for is a guy that’s maybe going to be one of the greatest managers, maybe, of all-time, over a period of 10, 20 years, who knows?”

One of the greatest managers of all time for a decade? In his spare time the guy can cure cancer, negotiate peace in the Middle East and solve global warming. Holy cow.

Steinbrenner also wants somebody who will, “take charge and be a real leader.”

As somebody who needs to write a story for tomorrow’s paper, keep talking Little Stein. It beats those statements from Howard Rubenstein.

I thought we were supposed to be patient. Now we’re expecting the greatest manager of the next decade?

  2. tonyb

Maybe these interviews are just a charade and Hank is going to introduce the reanimated corpse of Miller Huggins as Yankee Manager.

Talk about setting up somebody for a fall….

  3. Yankee Fan in Boston

Did Steinbrenner marry his sister or something? Is that the root cause? What is going on here?

  4. Dr. Acula

“..over a period of 10, 20 years, who knows?”

I think he’s talking about me!

Someone who’s lived more than one life-time ;)

  5. Clueless Day

Public speaking isn’t a very easy thing to do. Hank will settle in soon enough after he has a talk with the media relations people.

  6. JK

What the hell has happened to the Yankees. I am about to burn my hat, the team is going to hell in a hand basket.

  7. pkdkdksasas

As the employer, why wouldnt you expect the best out of your employees? GO HANK

  8. pkdkdksasas

What the hell has happened to the Yankees. I am about to burn my hat, the team is going to hell in a hand basket.

JK, WHAT THE HECK! You better burn your hat because you are not a true fan.

  9. The Monarch

Who was the writer who dubbed one of Steinbrenner’s kids as “Son of Steinbrenner?”

That name is beginning to ring true. :)

  10. Sara

what a circus the yankees have become again! I guess making The Bronx is Burning into a movie was a foreshadowing of what was to come with the Yankees!!!!

  11. Jim M

Most of the quotes I’ve read from Hank are downright incredible. It’s hard to imagine they were meant as they appear in print. Could it be they are taken out of context?

It’s either that or he really needs some PR training. Maybe a little chat with Rubenstein might do him some good.

  12. Dr. Acula

And to think, they shield Big Stein from the media, outta fear that he’ll make an embarrassing statement.

  13. Dr. Acula

_It’s hard to imagine they were meant as they appear in print._

    Maybe it’s code!

  14. Jim M

“Public speaking isn’t a very easy thing to do. Hank will settle in soon enough after he has a talk with the media relations people.”

He should find and join a local Toastmasters club to practice.

  15. Don Capone (Designated Blogger)

Well, I guess it’s better than saying “We want one of the worst managers for the next 10 years!”

But talk about putting pressure on Mattingly (or Girardi).

  16. Bubba

I think Hank is lobbying for the job.

  17. JJ

I confess, I am kind of enjoying the turmoil.
This is old school Bronx Zoo stuff.

The only thing is they better spend like Dad and sign some players (MO/Jorgie/AROD)!!!

  18. T in Miami

I agree with the previous post, public speaking is not the easiest thing to do. Especially when you just get thrown into the limelight like this. I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. Its very easy to sit here and pick at any one comment he says, but in reality, he is just saying the obvious. They want to pick a manager that will take us the promise land many times for a long time. A little obvious, but what so bad about that>?

  19. Tony

I don’t get it what turmoil?? Becasue they are taking their time naming a manger means turmoil and back to the bronx zoo days? ok.

  20. Motown Yankee Fan

Hank’s just trying to take attention away from the World Series with these quotes. So he’s a total genius. He’s given Yankee fans something to debate and think about, so we don’t have to think about, um, what that other AL East team is doing. Go Hank.

Seriously, I don’t envy Cashman right now. I have a feeling his heart is saying Mattingly, and his head is saying Girardi. But I think that Cash usually follows his head.

  21. Dr. Acula

“What we’re looking for is a guy that is faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall stadiums..”â€?

  22. Spoons

Gosh…that description sounds a lot like Joe Torre.

  23. yankee21

What is wrong with setting the bar high here? Are we not talking about a billion $$ plus corporation and the most celebrated franchise in the history of american sports??

Is it wrong of Hank and the rest of ownership to strive toward this? Sure it may sound polyanna like but what is actually wrong about his remarks??

Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t find anything incredible or gem like in this ‘Little Stein’ quote.

  24. .i.

JK THAT IS DISGRACEFUL. GO BURN YOUR HAT AND CLIMB ONTO THE RED SOX BANDWAGON. PLEASE.

we are yankees for life around here (at least i like to think we all are), i don’t care if the whole team dies in a plane crash or doesn’t win a championship for the next 50 years, i would still be a yankee fan. through the clichéd thick or thin.

  25. jennifer

Joe said something like we expect to win the ws
Donnie said it is a crap shoot.

Joe put loads of pressure on himself, Donnie thinks it is luck.

  26. lmk

Awwww. How sad. An owner that wants the absolute best for his team.

  27. Dr. Acula

Lil’ Stein is the straw that stirs the drink ;)

  28. #9

““What we’re looking for is a guy that’s maybe going to be one of the greatest managers, maybe, of all-time, over a period of 10, 20 years, who knows?â€?”

Translation: If new manager doesn’t win a world series in 2008 then he’s history!

  29. Dee

I can’t wait to hear Hank comment on the free Taco Bell tacos:-)

  30. Don Capone (Designated Blogger)

Yeah, this isn’t turmoil. Yet. In the old days the announcement would come tomorrow and the manager would be…Torre! Seriously. Like when Martin was fired and three days later ast the old timers day he was announced as the next manager.

  31. keith

    he should have said:

yeah, we’re probably not going to get someone all that great, but hey, we all know the playoffs are a crapshoot anyway! We’ll sit around conferencing and such for about a week, make an uninformed decision and probably be right back where we started in 2-3 years. Maybe Joe Torre would be willing to come back then!

Now *that* would have made A LOT of sense.

    Idiots.

  32. hmmm

i don’t see the big deal.

to me, this means they are looking for a long term solution. they want the guy they hire to stay for 10-20 years. to grow into the position and become a legendary Yankee manager.

in other words, they don’t want to have to hire a new manager for a LOOOOONG time.

this is the exact opposite of his father.

is his statement awkward and ham-fisted? yeah, a bit. but i’m not really seeing the drama here.

you guys ripped him when he suggested patience b/c you fely he was lowering expectations and now you are ripping him for setting high expectations. make up your minds.

  33. randyhater

“Public speaking isn’t a very easy thing to do.”

How about public shutting the f’ up? Fifteen years we don’t hear a word from this slack-jawed, yellow-fingered Jim Dolan knock-off, now we get an hourly update.

How long before he starts a horrible rock band?

  34. Yankees Chick

a great manager for a decade… so in other words they’re looking for joe torre.

  35. whoa

    I

  36. whoa

“How long before he starts a horrible rock band?”

Probably right after he kicks his drug problem. Oh wait, unlike Dolan he never had one.

    Way to make sense though.

  37. hmmm

“Translation: If new manager doesn’t win a world series in 2008 then he’s history!”

really, b/c that’s basically the OPPOSITE of the phrase “over a period of 10, 20 years”.

  38. whoa

I guess the “heart” symbol doesn’t translate.

Anyway, I tried to type: I heart Hank.

  39. whoa

“a great manager for a decade… so in other words they’re looking for joe torre.”

Nah, then he would have said that he wanted a bad manager who can front for a great team.

  40. hmmm

“a great manager for a decade… so in other words they’re looking for joe torre.”

    yes. they are.

they are looking for the next Joe Torre.

Joe Torre himself is 67 and will not be managing for another decade.

  41. E-ROC

Girardi or Pena. You can’t go wrong with either one, Cash. Cash is in a tough spot and I would hate to be in his shoes.

  42. Doreen

Was the statement a little over the top? Absolutely. But it says that they are not going to make a snap judgment. I don’t know what all the complaining is about. So, he’s not polished. So what. So he speaks from the hip. Okay. I agree — it’s much better than the prepared pablum from Rubenstein’s office.

Just as an aside, but a lot of people have been saying that H & H haven’t had anything to do with this team until right now. I seem to remember that they have been in on things for the last year; they’ve just been in the background, more or less. Now, apparently it’s time for them to be the spokespeople, since George is not. At least George is still there, in whatever capacity, to oversee the beginning of the new phase in Yankee ownership.

  43. Count of Montefusco

    HANK RULES!

    I HEART HANK TOO!

    GO NEWFANGLED YANKEES!

  44. Taylor

I gotta say, I love this. It was getting boring with no comments from George ever. This keeps everything exciting again. I don’t know, it just feels right. Keep it coming Hank!

  45. The Real B

    Oh noz.

They’re looking for someone they feel is going to be the best for the job and are hyping whoever it is up pretty much like they should be.

    We’re doomed. DOOOOOOOOOOMED.

  46. Patrick Bateman

Hank Steinbrenner is looking for a manager who will be one of the greatest managers over a 10 year period?

They had one over a 12 year period, his name was Joe Torre. He’s collecting unemployment right now

  47. iiicollies

Who was instrumental in hiring Joe back in 1995? I’m guessing it wasn’t George. Maybe Gene Michael?

  48. Steve Howe You Doin

I think what this team really needs is one, single, competent Spokesperson, not necessarily the greatest of all time, but one with a college degree.

Oh, and yes, for the next 10, 20 years, etc.

  49. BBB

Damn, Hank is just all kinds of entertaining. Thanks for making my workday pass by faster Little Stein!

Although of course if I still thought he had a huge say in the decision, I would find quotes like this much less entertaining and much more alarming. I could not have possibly woken up to better news this morning than that the decision is Cash’s. I think and hope this means that Stick Michael’s opinion will carry a ton of weight too.

  50. Steve Howe You Doin

We need to start printing T-shirts with Hank’s quotes. Who’s game for some suggestions?

  51. Jeff NJ

I kinda like the outspokeness from Hank. I also think that this statement does not contradict his statement that we should take it easy on next years manager. He thinks there will be growing pains then success. The question is if they miss the playoffs for 1 or 2 years, will he still be patient or will his Steinbrenner blood heat up. Also if Cashman is on the hook for 2008 and there is another first round exit or playoff miss, then there will be a new GM and he will have to accept a manager from the previous regime. Chaos, welcome to the Bronx.

  52. Mike S.

“a great manager for a decade… so in other words they’re looking for joe torre.

    yes. they are.

they are looking for the next Joe Torre.

Hmmm’s comment (above) is right on.

    As for me…

Torre is 67. 10-20 years won’t fit Torre, much like it wouldn’t have fit a 70 year old Stengel back in 1960.

The Torre/Stengel comparison so dead on right now. Each had 12 years, each basically had their career ended in much the same manner. Each were failures elsewhere before joining the Yankees, and their record with the Yankees completely redefined them.

  53. BBB

I think we should hire Joe Maddon as our official spokesperson if he ever gets fired from the D-Rays. Man does he bust out with some gems!

  54. Mike S.

    iiicollies:

    Your answer is Arthur Richman.

  55. randy l

hank steinbrenner is so in over his head that it’s comical. someone in the organization needs to muzzle him. there are sensitive negotiations coming up with arod that need to go in the yankees favor. hank has got to be kept in the background. this is no time for amateurs. cashman needs to be totally in charge of the negotiations with boras and arod or else it’ll be goodbye arod.

  56. Mike R.

It was George that was influential in the hiring of Joe Torre. That was part of the criticism. They thought that George only wanted to hire Joe, who had failed in his previous to jobs, because of his interest in horses and the “I like that guy” factor.

  57. The Real B

So Pete, where’s the apology or admittance that you were wrong for the spreading of bull about Cashman losing power/no one knowing who is in power like you were?

You’re obviously stating otherwise now, but you can’t seriously expect people to forget you blogging like a Torre-induced panicky chicken with its head cut off about stuff like that just a couple days ago.

As a professional, I would think you’d acknowledge it as to not hurt your own credibility further.

  58. Juke Early

Maybe they could try what the Cubs did in 1961-62….rotating mgrs ( terminated: didn’t work too well .400 W%).

Or like our governmental system of checks & balances, with no single branch having total power; The Executive, Legislative & Judicial( extant & barely working). They have Pena, Girardi & Mattingly!

The above was presented as ironic humor, though historically accurate. Personally I’d hire Billy Bob Thornton. . ..

  59. Rich Myers

The greatest manage for a decade? Hmm sounds like Torre – envy

The good old days are back – Hank’s developing the same love-hate relationship with Joe that George had with Billy.

Only Joe won’t play the revolving door game.

    What a family.

  60. Gayle

    BBB–

Based on what I read this morning about the use of Shelley Duncan more next season I do believe that Stick is very much involved. Stick has long been a BIG proponent of Duncan.

  61. Pauly One

Is Hank the one who seems to be smoking a cigarette in every picture taken of him? His quotes crack me up. A little media training would do him good.

  62. Mike S.

    http://findarticles.com/p/arti.....08172/pg_4

states Richman’s role in hiring Torre.

  63. Doreen

    Gayle –

That’s interesting news about Duncan. Where’d you read it? I only get the Star Ledger and my computer is sometimes a pain in the a – so I don’t necessarily read the other papers online.

  64. West Coast Fan

For someone (or some family) that wants a “real leader”, they don’t know the first thing about leadership. A leader’s first priority, I say first priority, is to put those they are leading in a situation where they can succeed, therefore, the leader succeeds.

Saying “…one of the greatest managers, maybe of all time…” is not a recipe for managerial success. He has set the bar way too high. There is no way an expectation should be set for a leader to attain that goal.

This is not beginning well for the next manager. I believe Hank needs some leadership training.

  65. hmmm

“They had one over a 12 year period, his name was Joe Torre. He’s collecting unemployment right now”

    why is this so complicated?

they want their new manager to manage the team for the next 10-20 years.

why can’t people understand that Joe Torre doesn’t fit that description?

Torre is old. the Yankees are getting younger. they want a younger manager to guide the team for the next decade.

    seems pretty reasonable to me.

did you guys really think Torre was going to manage for another 10 years?

  66. Tim

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the Yanks to have a great manager for at least a decade. If a three-times fired loser retread like Torre can have decade-plus success, anyone can.

  67. randy l

cashman is clearly not in control of the yankees, say, the way billy beane is in control oakland. i personally think the yankees are just improvising right now and putting out the fires that are the biggest in front of them. the fact cashman is on a one year contract doesn’t create a lot of leverage for him. trusting someone to take care of you later doesn’t make for a strong position.
as the yankees muddle through naming a manager, negotiating with arod, posada, rivera, etc, who has power will probably emerge because these are critical decisions that will shape the team for the next few years. i think it’s clear cashman has had his wings clipped since last spring. how much they grow back is the question.

  68. whoa

Torre was originally offered the GM job, but he turned it down. He was later offered the managerial job, which paid more, so he took it.

  69. migames

“they want their new manager to manage the team for the next 10-20 years.”

The problem with all these statement is if they want him the are looking for someone to manage 10-20 years, why offer Torre a one year contract? Why not just tell him “hey joe, thanks but we are looking at the long term.”

Their is a problem of perception fueled by Hanks comments.
    Patients-incentive contract
    long term-short term contract

  70. Doreen

I don’t see that the Yankees are putting out fires. They have an order of business, an agenda. First on the agenda — do we want Torre back? Yes, but with limitations. Okay. Offer contract. Torre declines. Back to agenda 1-A – who will manage next season? Prepare list. Interview candidates. Choose candidate and craft a contract. Announce manager. Next on agenda: ARod and free agents.

These are not fires — these were all expected situations that had to be dealt with. Torre’s contract was ended, so that was the first order of business, and so on. I don’t sense any disarray here. In fact, they seem to be making sure all the i’s get dotted and t’s get crossed. There don’t seem to be any knee-jerk decisions being made.

There is no guarantee that any of the decision made will be good ones – only time will tell. But at least they are considered decisions. No fires at all.

  71. Tim

Peter I dare you to contact Randy Levine and Hank and Hal Steinbrenner and show them this blog, namely your comments about them. I guarantee you they will lay down an edict to everyone in the Yankees organization to never talk to you/ give you a quote again and will have someone check your articles to make sure that edict is abided by. Trust me, you will feel it in your coverage. They should ban you from the Stadium for all the getting personal bile you’ve written about them.

Go back to covering the Mets cuz you’re just a poor man’s Mike Lupica now.

  72. whoa

Murray Chass’s column about Torre’s lack of cred put out any and all fires for reasonable people.

  73. Jeff NJ

I think the Yankees better start adding quality people to the baseball operations staff that can one day take over as GM. Cashman is as good as gone after next year, possibly by his own choice with the knuckleheads in charge. He is very marketable and could have a job as a GM for another major league team very quickly, or he could take some time and enjoy his family. Either way, I’d bet any amount of money Cash is gone 1 year from now.

  74. Doreen

The selection of a new manager and what they are looking for has nothing to do with Joe Torre. Joe had already been their manager for 12 years. They were not looking for him to stay for another 10 to 12 years. Even if they wanted him, he would be 76 to 79 years of age. With all the youngsters, I can hardly imagine this would have been a good idea. So, if Torre, then short-term. If someone new, then we need to think longer term. This is a good thing. Do you want these people thinking about hiring someone who they know from the get go may not have sticking power? Ideally, you hire someone that you can live with for a long time. Do things always work out? No, of course not. But you don’t go in with that attitude, because if you do, it surely WON’T work out.

  75. whoa

    Tim,

I disagree with Pete on most issues, but he is a very good reporter, so I can separate that from his opinions. The Yankee’s FO probably does the same thing, as well they should.

  76. filthy stuff

hank, the older of the jerky boys has to be kidding, isn’t he. first i have to suffer thru big steins stupid behavior for his first 30 yrs. now i have to suffer this jerk. Hopefully he tire of his new toy & sell it to someone more worthy, like a nutjob or something.

  77. whoa

Cashman loves this job. I highly doubt that he wants to work for another set of owners while watching the fruits of his labor (Hughes, Joba, Kennedy, Jackson, Tabata, Melky, Cano) win multiple championships in NY.

Plus the Steinbrenner kids seem to like him and they appear to be great to work for.

  78. Doreen

Lots of chicken littles here. Change is not easy, but it was going to come along sooner or later. It’s now. Crazy people make rash decisions. There are no rash decisions being made. At least on its face, it appears that H&H are weighing all the information, listening to other peoples’ opinions — which is more than their dad every did!

I’m not saying they’re not colorful, but why do some of you assume that they have no ability whatsoever? And it seems to me that the ability they lack, they are not above delegating. Why is this a problem?

  79. Jackie Roberts

Forrest Jensen, mark my words, he’ll surprise you all !

  80. Jonathon

I cringe every time this man opens his mouth. Maybe Howard Rubenstein should go to work for Hank Steinbrenner too.

Wait…listen…if you are real quiet, you can hear it…

Snickering from our chowda loving friends up north.

  81. Jonathon

    Doreen…

Lots of apologists too for a man that has not made one reasonable comment since he took more of an active role with this team.

  82. whoa

The Yankees are a better team than the Sox and now that Torre is gone they will stop choking in the postseason and start kicking butt.

  83. DC

What does Mattingly do if he doesn’t get the job? Won’t it be awkward to be a bench coach after begging for the managers job? Can’t really make him manager for a farm team. What do you think?

  84. whoa

“Lots of apologists too for a man that has not made one reasonable comment since he took more of an active role with this team.”

    Really?

Virtually everything he has said has been spot on, whether it be about has father giving Torre a chance in 1996, or keeping Joba as a starter, or a new reliance on the farm system, or how much they relies on Cash.

There is no reason to apologize for that.

  85. Jonathon

Yankees are better than the Sox?

Funny, last time I checked it was the Sox up 2-0 in the World Series with a chance to win their 2nd championship in 4 years.

  86. Jonathon

    And as John Lennon said…

“Living is easy with eyes closed”

  87. randy l

    “No fires at all.”
    doreen-
the yankees have to name a manager quickly so arod ,posada, and rivera know if they want to play for him. that’s fire #1
in three days, the world series could be over and the yankees have ten days to negotiate with arod. that’s fire #2.
then they have a small window with excusive negotiating rights with posada and rivera. that’s fire #3 and fire#4
you see patience while i see the inherent problems of consensus decision making. rule by committee is not going to get arod signed. boras will not sit around while the yankees plod through endless meetings.

  88. BBB

Gayle: that is GREAT news, both about Stick’s increased involvement and Shelley being part of the plan for next year. Thanks for passing it on! I’m a big fan of Shelley’s potential also and I was concerned for a while that he was still mistakenly being viewed as a one-dimensional hacker whose only skill was to run into a homer every so often. Did the article you read specify in what capacity they were thinking about using him next year? I think he could play a good deal of 1st and IIRC he has a pretty good arm so he can play right if they want to sit Abreu vs. a tough lefty.

  89. Doreen

Surely you exaggerate? Not ONE reasonable comment?

  90. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

    Yogi has some competition!

  91. Jake

That is actually a pretty hilarious quote, Pete. haha.

Keep stirring the pot and maybe we’ll get something even better!

  92. Gayle

    BBB

It was in todays New York POst, George King;’s Yankees notes link is below also talked about the Yankees most likely picking up Abreau’s option.

The Duncan usage was as follows”The Yanks envision Duncan getting at-bats in right field and as the DH, and also are toying with the notion of leaving first base as a place for Duncan, Wilson Betemit and perhaps even Posada to get at-bats. ”

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/10.....t_year.htm

  93. Rick (Columbus)

    I like Hank already.

  94. Jake

    JK,

burn your hat and yourself, you are disgrace.

  95. Doreen

    Thanks, Gayle.

  96. Gayle

Also in terms of good people in the front office if they ixney cashman after next year. Damon Oppenheimer is VERY well regarded and I am not sure which team it was asked persmission to speak with him for a GM job and the Yanks said no. I know he is in charge of the draft but maybe someone with better knowledge can say what else he does.

  97. Charlie

    Hold on everybody….

Hank was actually misquoted. He actually said the exact opposite:

“We are looking to hire a terrible manager. We do not want, nor expect him to succeed, and he will be fired after a brief tenure.”

So, actually, Abraham got it wrong, and Hank isn’t the villain the media wants him to be. We can all breathe a sigh of relief.

  98. Jonathon

This is kinda resonable re: The Red Sox…

“If you look at the last 12 years, we’ve won four and they’ve won one. We’ve been in six; they’ve been in one.”

Except, of course, they are playing in their 2nd one.

Wait…this just in over the AP…

Hank Steinbrenner says the Yankees will draft the next Babe Ruth in the 2008 amateur draft. They will be holding meetings next week. Details to follow.

    :)

  99. hmmm

“The Duncan usage was as followsâ€?The Yanks envision Duncan getting at-bats in right field and as the DH, and also are toying with the notion of leaving first base as a place for Duncan, Wilson Betemit and perhaps even Posada to get at-bats. â€?”

looking at the FA options at 1B, i think this is a wise plan.

  100. Peter Abraham

    Tim:

The Yankees have people who read everything. Meanwhile, what I have written that was “personal” ?

I haven’t commented on their looks. I’ve commented on what they have said. They own the team, what they say and what they do is news. People have opinions on that. Everybody won’t agree.

Meanwhile, they are also professionals. They understand that is how it works. They aren’t going to ban me or anybody else from the Stadium. This is America, we have freedom of the press. MLB has rules against that sort of thing.

No offense, but don’t be such a baby. The Steins and Levine are adults, they can take it. Sorry I’m not a cheerleader for your team but you have YES for that.

    Thanks for reading the blog.

The Cardinals were interested in Oppenheimer.

  102. migames

well put Pete. Why do people get all sad when someone pokes at Hank and Hal. For the love of god. These people arent god

  103. Jonathon

I heard that “Tim” is the pseudonym Hank Steinbrenner uses when he posts on Yankee fan blogs.

  104. Dr. Acula

    Jonathon-

if the red sox are so hot, then why did George Mitchell’s office have to smear Paul Byrd ??

    Talk ’bout “October Surprise”

  105. NJ

yea, man we should really aim to hire a guy that wont do a good job and will only be here for a year or two.

  106. Tim

    whoa

It’s Peter’s right to run his mouth about Yankees ownership anywhere including this blog, but it’s Yankees ownership’s right to ban a guy who does that behind their backs and away from his beat. I doubt he has shown or ever will show this blog to Levine or George’s sons. Why would I want a guy talking crap about me, my brother, and my father -MY FAMILY- talking to my general manager, players, or anyone in my organization?

  107. Drive 4-5

Speaking of YES. Did anyone watcg the Cassius Clay documentary they showed last night? Terrific clips of the “Greatest”.

I find it funny how YES is knocked around. They certainly do filter their content, but try watching NESN sometime. In good times and bad nary is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day. Boston Globe sportwriter/ NESN commentator Gordon Eades would do his own root canal before he’d give you an unbiased opinion.

  108. whoa

“Funny, last time I checked it was the Sox up 2-0 in the World Series with a chance to win their 2nd championship in 4 years.”

Because the Yankees have choked in the playoffs since 2004. They are still a better team.

Or do you really think that the Cards were the best team in MLB last season?

  109. Dr. Acula

    Jonathon-

actually, “Tim” is “Mit” spelled backwards.

Obviously, “Tim” must be none other than red sox fan Mitt Romney

  110. whoa

    Tim,

The Yankees have enough self-confidence and a thick enough skin to withstand the criticism.

  115. Peter Abraham

    Tim:

Are you 12? This is New York, buddy. People write critically about the sports teams. If teams banned every writer who was critical, nobody would cover the team. Yes, I’m going to print out the blog and fly down to Tampa and show them. That is how it works.

The Yankees can read if they want to. They can call me to complain or correct me if they want to, that happens once in a while. But they are professionals, they know what the territory is when you own a team.

No offense, but you really can’t be that naive, can you?

Honestly, this is baseball. People just need to calm down.

  116. ray

It’s just killing you guys isn’t it that the Sox are in the Series this year and well on their way to winning the Series. The best team is measured by how you do through the whole season against all the teams and by how you do in the playoffs. On both counts the Sox were better than the Yankees this year. Just deal with it. I readily admit that there have way too many years that the Yankees were better than the Sox.

  117. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

I just wanna go on a date or two. Then if we click we can take it further. All this talk about 20 years is scaring me off. You’re too demanding too early. Take it easy on me I’ve had my heart broken before.

Sorry I’m not a cheerleader for your team but you have YES for that.

Pete, c’mon… Michael Kay, Ken Singleton in cheerleading outfits….

Ok, I am going to vomit….

  119. migames

    timmy,

this aint Cuba, pete can say whatever he wants wherever he wants.

  120. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

Ray said “I readily admit that there have way too many years that the Yankees were better than the Sox.”

There is nothing such as way too much when it comes to the Yankees getting the better of that other team. You hear me? It’s NEVER enough. Normal service shall be resumed. If history repeats itself which it usually does, the Sox will have a nice run these next few years to be followed by Yankee domination for the rest of the century.

  121. Jonathon

You are right…when I think of the best teams, choker is definately the first word that comes to mind.

Those Yankees in 1927, they had some of the greatest chokers of all-time…Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig.

Boy that Big Red Machine team of the 1970’s, they sure did have some chokers didn’t they.

The 98 Yankees, those guys really choked when the game was on the line.

  122. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine

Tim, you’re a bit of a muppet pal. Quit digging a whole for yourself.

  123. whoa

I see that you have a deep understanding of the concept of sample size.

The team that wins the WS isn’t necessarily the best team. The Yankees have been better than the Sox over 162 games for over a decade, except for this season, and that was largely due to the injuries to the rotation in April.

  124. VOIII

So Hank has Foot in Mouth disease…Why all the negativity? Because he inherited a dream job and gets to play fantasy baseball for real? The comments directed at him are completely unfair and reek of jealousy. Because someone is not eloquent does not make them an idiot. This team’s future is extremely bright and anyone with half a brain can see that, They can also see who is responsible for that. Cashman will be here next year and beyond…If I’m wrong then Oppenheimer inherits the throne. The Yankees have great baseball people in place. Let’s not forget about Stick, who built the previous dynasty. Yup, still on board…The Yankees are still the envy of the sporting world and one could argue that their future is brighter then either team playing in the WS right now. Give these guys a chance, or maybe we can run them out of town and they can sell to James Dolan….Would that make you feel better?

  125. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

See, the fun thing about the Stiennies is that the more we rag on them, the better responses we get.

    I love New York.

  126. Pepper Brooks

    VOIII
Would that make you feel better?

    No but Eva Mendes would.

  127. Jonathon

    whoa…

That sounds like what George Steinbrenner used to say.

The Yankees might not have won any championships in the ’80s but they won the most games of any team in the ’80s.

Sounds like a good trade off.

Maybe then if post-season victory is not the best indicator of a team success, perhaps Joe Torre should still be managing this team.

After all, he did lead the Yankees to 90+ wins every year he was here (except 1, but they won the WS anyway that year).

Not to open a can of worms or anything.

  128. VOIII

Eva Mendes would make me feel better too, Unfortunately that’s a pipe dream…Just like having a perfect owner of your favorite sports franchise. If anyone can name an owner who has given his patrons more over the last 35 years…I would love to hear it…10 trips to the WS, 6 championships thousands of backpages and for the Pete Abraham’s of the world…A bazillion quotes to write about….

I look forward to your Post each day, anxiously awaiting new and interesting pictorials in your photobucket.

Alas, its been several days without a new photo. Just that young chick, staring skyward pretending to be in a wet tee shirt contest.
    Very disappointing…Very very disappointing!

The red sox got lucky playing a beat up angels team in the alds. If they faced cleveland in the first round they would have lost the series 3 games to 1 also. Sure they came back but how do you know the yankees wouldn’t have came back if it was a 7 game series.

The red sox are lucky they didn’t face the yankees in the alcs because I have no doubt the yankees would have won the series.

  131. Clueless Day

  132. Tim

    Peter

If that isn’t the pot calling the kettle black. YOU’RE the baby (since you called me one, real mature) constantly whining about Torre and how the Steinbrenners are this and that. I don’t have time to go into every blog entry you’ve written about the Steinbrenners. Let’s just say none of them read this blog and you’re lucky they don’t cuz I can’t see them letting you near their team for what you’ve said about them. NONE of the Yankee beat writers go off on them as much as you do. You’re unprofessional. They could make a case to keep you from the team and simply replace you with another writer. What M.L.B. rules are you speaking of? CITE THEM. Since when was beat writing about the Yanks YOUR right? Yeah M.L.B. rules call for the right for beat writers to have access to the team, but it’s YOUR privilege to be among them. So I can start a newspaper, get into Yankee Stadium, and talk to Cashman? ‘Doubt it, so nevermind your “freedom of the press” jive. I never said you couldn’t write what you wanted to write, I merely said I dare you to direct Levine and George’s sons to your blog. You alluded to having Cashman’s email in a recent blog entry, so you should have no problem getting Levine’s, Hank’s, or Hal’s. Just let them know you cover the Yanks with it and talk extensively about ownership which you do. It’s your crusade to make them look bad when no one in the real world thinks they are bad cuz Yankee fans will still turn out in droves like the real fans they are…while you take one jab at Hank after another with your “he’s looking for a manager to find a cure for cancer” crap which is insensitive to all who have and die from cancer…and getting personal. There, that’s an example.

I’m not a “cheerleader”. What is this myth about YES being cheerleaders? Drinking the Raissman and Stupica Kool-aid? The YES website provide fan forums where people go off on the Yankees. Since when were David Justice and Paul O’Neill, YES analysts, cheerleaders? They could walk away from YES any time they want. Kimberly Jones is a cheerleader? Last I checked, she merely gives a brief pre-game report on the team. She was recently on WFAN with her own views on the Yanks with no qualms about telling it like it is about the Yanks after this year’s A.L.D.S. debacle. I’m sure YES was aware of her little 5-6am gig with Chris Carlin. You don’t really watch/listen to YES broadcasts down in your booth when you cover the Yanks as you’re working on the story for the game, I do. Jim Kaat was a cheerleader? He had a pretty long run as a YES guy. Girardi was a cheerleader? Neither Murcer nor Singleton is a cheerleader. Kay is the lone cheerleader but that hardly qualifies as the entire YES network from being that. If they’re cheerleaders, you’re a Yankee ownership hater yet you cover the Yanks and what does that make you?

The Yanks don’t even have to ban you from the Stadium, they could simply forbid everyone on the team from talking to you. Prove that to Selig if he even hears the case. I’m sure your newspaper would love you doing that.

  133. RobM

I’m a Sox fan so I don’t really have the same perspective here however I don’t really see Pete as being that bad aon the ownership. In Boston when the team isn’t doing well the writers go after the owners, the GM, the Manager. You have the right to report what you think. Tim get over it if you hate the blog stop reading it.

Oh and as for Torre I always thought he was a great manager, pinstripes and all.

  134. TimH

Please don’t mistake TimH for Tim.

  135. Tim

    Peter

No I’m not 12 but you’re sure acting like a 12-year old asking me if I’m one. I’m not saying don’t/ you can’t be critical of the team or talk crap about the Yankees ownership. I’m challenging you to reach out to Levine and George’s sons about your daily rants about them, you seem to have a problem with that, so I’ve leave it at that. My point was if they read your stuff and didn’t want to deal with you after it, they could do that.

You thanked me for reading your blog. Thank you for showing me and your readers that I struck a nerve in you enough for you to come back to me with nothing but insults cuz you’re a blowhard idiot, cuz nowhere did I call you a “baby” or a 12-year old. Keep typing like a 12-year old baby about Torre being gone and George’s sons.

You resort to ad-hominem attacks, so I’m done with you.

  136. RobM

I’m not sure but is this guy just some spammer?

  137. Peter Abraham

    Tim:

I think I speak for everyone when I saw we’re all impressed with the wisdom of your words. Clearly, everyone in the media should root for the Yankees and never write anything other than the party line.

As as soon as I get back from Modell’s with my new Yankees gear, I promise to do my part to praise every word uttered by our great leader, Hank Steinbrenner. I thank you for setting me straight.

Also, in another amazing piece of wisdom, clearly you are correct when you say I am much tougher on the team than the Post or Daily News. And obviously it’s my great privilege that I get to do my job every day and talk to these wonderful people. Obviously I should be more thankful. “Stupica” by the way, was brilliant.

Tim, finally, is there any way I can convince you to take over the blog so we can benefit from your rational views and great wit (again, “Stupica” I’m still laughing)?

Please get back to me Tim. I’ll be home from Modells in 20 minutes.

  145. Rocco

    ray,

were the red sox not down 3 games to 1 to the Indians. Or are you talking about the Yankees not beating the Red Sox?

I believe the Yanks only lost 1 game to the Red Sox in the last 2 series they played.

But you’re right the regular season doesnt matter. Look at the Yankees record vs the indians.

Good luck in the World Series and we’ll see you again next year :)
