Decision soon on next manager

Peter Abraham
October
28

Still no word on who the next manager will be. If Brian Cashman has selected a candidate to send to the Steinbrenners, they’ve managed to keep it quiet.

Depending on who is speculating, some people believe Joe Girardi will get the gig. Others Don Mattingly. Nobody is going on the record, so be careful what you choose to believe. The latest indications are that Girardi will get the job.

Based on the comments of Hal Steinbrenner, the team will negotiate a deal with the new manager on Monday and the announcement should come on Tuesday.

The Yankees can’t make a bad choice here. Girardi and Mattingly are both qualified. Mattingly would probably get a longer honeymoon from the fans and the media, but that shouldn’t be a factor in making a decision.

Jon Heyman of SI says that it’s Girardi, who will be offered a 3 year, 6 million contract:

  2. Rudy

ESPN and Buster Olney are reporting that “All signs point to Girardi,” and a few minor hurdles ahead until he is announced as the manager.

  3. Joe

Buster Olney, Heyman and the daily news all say Girardi.

  4. Andrea

ESPN also announced for about 10 minutes that Torre was coming back. So who knows.

  5. Brendon

Well I like Girardi, but I feel we will never be able to get Mattingly back. I don’t think Mattingly will agree to be bench coach or anything if he doesn’t get the job. I like Bowa as bench coach and Pena as 3rd base coach.

CNNSi is reporting that A-ROd will opt out

  7. Andrea

Brendon: I don’t know Mattingly’s personality, so I have no clue if he’s the “fine, I’m never coming back to your stupid stadium” type. But I don’t know if the Yankees should worry about hurting someone’s feelings and selecting the weaker manager over having who they feel is the better manager.

I don’t know though. I didn’t really think Joe Torre would be the “I’m never coming back” type either.

ESPN has nothing but a bunch of loud-mouths working for them. They all have an opinion and are not afraid to let everyone know what it is. But if they are wrong they will never apologise(sp) for it. With the internet it is no longer necessary to watch to see what the scores are. So I quit watching them years ago.

  9. Ryan

Enjoy playing for a .500 team, Alex.

  10. Todd

Who cares if Mattingly won’t come back to the organization? I cheered for him for years as a player, but that’s not a reason to choose him as a manager (whether he is offended)…..

  11. Jonathan

In an unrelated topic. What is Arod doing not going to the World Series to receive his award. Honestly it is an honor he should have been there.

  12. Nate

I liked Girardi as the manager from the start. If he does indeed get the job, is there any chance that Mattingly returns as the hitting instructor? I think the Yankees responded to him well during his short tenure in that position?

  13. Brendon

well even if Girardi is bench coach and Mattingly is mananager or vice versa…don’t you think there would be second guessing going on if the yankees had a loosing record? I could see another Bronx is Burning

  14. Viking Coach

GOOD BYE A-ROD, ITS BEEN NICE KNOWING YOU..LIKE I SAID LAST NIGHT, A-ROD AND TORRE GOING TO THE DODGERS

  15. Stephen

I think Alex skipped the WS award to avoid the media and the spectacle of it all.

And meanwhile poor Tony Peña is just like…’Remember me? Please?’

    I don’t see the A-Rod stuff anywhere.

  18. CaptainsCorner

Heyman reporting that Arod “the dog on a leash” will opt out of his contract. So either the Angels are tampering with Boras or he is prepared to go to a last place team.

  19. Brendon

wow a-rod really is opting out….hhmm whos the next third baseman…he wasn’t even offered his contract yet how can this be!

  20. JK

heyman is reporting that arod is opting out! I really hope the yanks stick to their guns on this one. I think they will. Arod, you are the best talent I’ve ever seen. But how much is enough? Just play the game!

  21. Utility Man

Id be very surprised if Mattingly was the bench coach. Why would Girardi agree to have the “runner up” sit right next to him, opening himself up to questions like “Well I wonder what Donnie would have done there”

Anyone know who Giradis’ bench coach was with Florida???

Maybe Larry Bowa hasnt accepted the Seattle coaching job, because he might be Girardis’ right hand man???

  22. .i.

Alex Rodriguez notified the Yankees on Sunday that he’s opting out of his record $252 million contract, SI.com has learned.

good luck you piece of dirt.

    AROD OPTS OUT

    GOOD RIDDANCE

    GREEDY KCUF

  25. B

And next season is officially over on October 28th. We’re so screwed.

  26. kasey

“Enjoy playing for a .500 team, Alex.”

you think the yankees, without a-rod and torre, and possibly without posada and rivera, are going to be much better?

get ready for some lean years.

  27. Ryan

It’s not that bad that he’s opting out. 30 million a year goes a long way in making a team deeper, not to mention the picks that come from the other team.

  28. CaptainsCorner

Now we know why he didnt show up at the WS once this got out he didnt want to have to answer questions about him being a money hungry dog. Im glad that Arod couldnt even give the Yanks respect to see what there offer would be!!! Or does he not even think for himself? Boras must control his every move. This really is unreal. Boras said Arod couldnt stay not knowing what Pettitte, Mo and Posada would be doing…Ohh really like he cared who was at Texas when he signed there.

  29. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

If this is true, then good riddance.

If you don’t want to be here, we don’t want you here. We had a fun relationship, but it’s like those flings, when all the passion goes out…

  30. Utility Man

    Good Ridance….You money hungry hipocrite.
If this is true…The Yankees HAD BETTER stick to their guns.

He will either be on the Dodgers—Cubs—or Angels in 2008 if this is true.

  31. gayle

Well so much for wanting to stay in New York and loving to play here.

If a player doesnt want to be here then good riddance. I like how he says he cant make a decison is such a short time without knowing about Mo and Jorge. What a crock.

Fine we can use the 30 million a year on someone (multiple someones)

  32. Brendon

Alright lets compile a list of third baseman that we can get.

    1) Mike Lowell

  33. GG

    Girardi’s coaches with the Marlins:
    Bench coach – Gary Tuck
    Pitching coach – Rick Kranitz
    Hitting coach – Jim Presley
Infield and 1B coach – Perry Hill
    3B coach – Bobby Meacham
    Bullpen coach – Mike Harkey
    Bullpen coordinator – Pierre Arsenault

  34. Ryan

Does this have any bearing on what they do with Abreu?

  35. Viking Coach

Now we will hear how A-Rod is a greedy choke artist, well he will go put up his monster numbers up for someone else, I guess Hank was right tis really is going to be a team in transition….Me I’m going to go out and buy David Wright a first basemans glove, A-rod is buying that home in Greenwich CT. What a night for Yankee Fans A-Rod Bolts and the Sox win the World Series OH BABY !!!!!!!!!

  36. Utility Man

Hey…..Here is a bit of good news that might come out of this…..The Yankee Clubhouse Atendant can now issue #13 to Carl Pavano (Because he is cursed and sux) and then issue #45 to Phil Hughes (Because he likes having a 5 in his number)

  37. Ryan

    2) Joe Crede
    3) Garret Atkins
    4) Eric Chavez

  38. Utility Man

Thank You GG for the info….very nice job!

  39. CaptainsCorner

What makes no sense is the Yanks still have 10 days to sign Posada and Mo how does money hungry know that they wouldnt of signed before then??? It is a big blow to the team, but this means the Yanks have $30m to give to Santana.

  40. Brendon

    hahaha utility man

  41. Andrea

“Rodriguez’s agent Scott Boras said he sent word of the opt-out in writing Sunday and left phone and text messages for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.”

Can you imagine getting a text message like that?

  42. Utility Man

I think I heard that the MUTS are going to go hard after Johan Santanna. They do have some chips to trade.

Would you trade Joba and a low minor leaguer to Minnesota for Johan??? I would not.
