Today in The Journal News
As the Yankees prepare to name a manager, they are also preparing a major offer for A-Rod.
Joe Girardi, in Denver for the World Series, says he has not heard from the Yankees. The same is true of Don Mattingly’s agent.
The final decision seems to rest with Brian Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner. I’ll stick with Mattingly, but it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if Girardi gets it. None of the papers I saw today seem to have a clue. It’s all speculation.
As for A-Rod, expect the posturing to increase from both sides. Scott Boras typically pretends deadlines don’t exist then makes a deal at the last second. That’s what happened with Daisuke Matsuzaka last December.
Once the clock starts ticking on A-Rod, he’ll take it down to the end to try and wring the last dollar out of the deal. It’s what a good agent does.
I’m headed out today to watch the Pats-Skins game with a Washington fan. Hopefully there will be no punches thrown.

I’m sick of all the ESPN articles from the different talking heads about the Yankees’ Manager position that are based on pure speculation. No new information is ever given in said articles..they just keep saying the same thing.
MATTINGLY, GIRARDI, OR PENA WILL BE THE NEW MANAGER. WE DON’T KNOW WHO, BUT I KIND OF THINK THAT MATTINGLY WILL GET THE JOB, BUT IT’S REALLY ANYBODY’S CALL. IT COULD ALSO BE GIRARDI OR PENA. BUT REMEMBER!!!…I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE MATTINGLY (BUT I DON’T REALLY KNOW)
Well thanks a lot. I could have told you that much.
It seems to me at this point in time, the Yanks need a manager with a little more edge, somebody to drive them out of the gate fast instead of digging themselves a big hole early as they’ve done the last few years. That, I think, would be Girardi.
As for ARod, I don’t think he’ll get more money if he opts out, especially if the Yanks aren’t in the mix. I look for something to get done, maybe a 5 year extension at 30 mil. a year. If not, so be it.
Meanwhile, the best the NL has to offer, the Rockies, look like a AAA team against the Red Sox. Ugh. Not what I was hoping for.
DC for a Skins game? Make sure your friend is buying. The Steins (big or little) have nothing on The Danny when it comes to finding new and creative ways to gouge fans.
Pete -
Isn’t is your journalistic duty to call the Yankee front office, talk to some secretary there, and then write that a “front office official familiar with the talks says it is going to be X”?
How dare you simply report facts and present your analysis honestly!!! You’ll never make the back pages that way!
peter, you asked in the last thread where some of us get ideas like arod being a yankee co captain and this possibly being a carrot dangled in negotiations ? i guess we got it from guidry and randolph being yankee co captains. that’s ok about not knowing that. you doing pretty good considering following the yankees is just a job, as you often say, for you. we , on the other hand take things a little more seriously.
i realize that you are more focused on the patriots right now than the yankees, but what are you thinking when you write, “Once the Yankees name a manager and secure Posada, Rivera and Rodriguez, Cashman would have only some minor moves to make.”?
like all of those things are a given. the yankees are entering into a week where all hell could break loose. none of these signings that you so casually mention is a lock.
here’s the problem the way i see it.
there is too much on the table for too short of a time. it’s exactly the kind of set up where things can go wrong in unforseen ways. boras himself is, as you say, going to take things right to the brink. simultaneously posada’s and rivera’s agent are going to be pressuring cashman and the yankees.
there is the term” fog of war” that comes to mind here. the yankees are in a competition for these players that is in effect a negotiating war. from wikepedia: The fog of war is a term used to describe the level of ambiguity in situational awareness experienced by participants in military operations.[1]”
cashman , hank(don’t forget general hank) , and other yankee brass are going to have so much coming at them there is going to be a great chance of screwing up. cashman vs. boras alone is going to be a major battle.
i think ambiguity is going to make things crazy for cashman and the yankees because there are simply too many variables. that said, i hope you’re right and cashman has it all under control and we all wake up on in two weeks from now with all three signed and all is well.
don’t forget to tell us how the patriots come out. we’re all holding our breaths just waiting to hear. i hope you can tell i’m partly kidding here. but not totally. i’d like to hear more from you about all this that the yankees have coming at them than what little you wrote in your sunday column.
Gawd, I LOVE being a Yankee!

p.s. Brady and his girlfriend are overrated
The challenge of deciding on the manager continues. The Yankees are going to be well off with either guy. As long as their free agents are all resigned- Mo, A-Rod, and Posada, and Chamberlain can make a smooth transition into the rotation and Hughes is healthy enough, it really doesn’t matter who manages.
Could be a good one in Foxboro. The Redskins’ secondary is as good as it gets, but their front seven can’t rush the passer. Brady will have more than enough time in the pocket to overcome the secondary. Pats should be 8-0 after today. New England is currently the second best team in my book. The Titans of course are Number 1! I’m a shameless homer!!
J-Dawg
I thought erin andrews is your number one team?
The game doesn’t start for another six hours; Peter gonna do some serious tailgating.
Go Skins just because I can’t stand Bellecheat. A disgruntled Jet fan for 27 years.
Dr A- Erin Andrews will always be Number One in my book. I was talking about NFL power rankings. I always have to give the Titans the top spot because of home state loyalty.
We will make the playoffs!!
By the way, isn’t it an embarrassment to the league that they are sending the Dolphins to London? Not exactly a great showcase, although it could be worse. They could have the Rams play a game in London. Yuck!!
I had a dream that it was ______ that got the job. I won’t mention who cos I don’t want to jinx it!
This morning 60 minutes classic had an episode on Bryan Taylor on. I am watching it on dvr now.
Dolphins losing = really good for Jets fans. Means we’re still not the worst team in the league!
Though we’re close. Really close. START CLEMENS DANG IT!
(and I don’t mean Roger, though at this rate he probably _is_ a better QB than Chad…)

I want the fins to win. Cause even with this horrible crappy season we won’t even get the first pick of the draft!!
Rebecca, I’m afraid I already jinxed it when I got too excited during the pre-game last night.
Watching the way Pedroia and Ellsbury have produced, I think Sox would be crazy to pay $30m+ a yr for Arod. Don’t those two make a combined of $400k or something like that? Imagine if Sox add Arod and $32mill to their books next year and end up watching him and the two rookies produce the same way they have this PO? I don’t think Arod’s thin skin can handle Texas 2.0 and I can’t even imagine the kind of t-shirt CRod will have to wear to fend off the Boston media and fans.
If Boston bids for Arod, it will be out of spite and will have nothing to do with wanting championships.
If Arod leaves NY for the Dodgers, White Sox or wherever, he could go down in history as Pay-Rod who never won a championship vs. a Yankee legend. If he takes that risk for an extra $800 net a year, then he’s much dumber than I thought.
Between the Dolphins and the Rams, one of them goes 0-16 this year. I think that Miami could wind up winning two or three games. If the Rams can’t beat the Browns today, then I pick the Rams to go winless. And the Jets can’t have the first pick as long as the Rams are around!
Do the fins play the rams this year? or will it be possible to have 2 0-16 teams than the Jets won’t even get the second pick!!
“We’re keeping a very, very open dialogue and a very positive attitude toward the direction of the Yankees,” Boras said. “I think when the time comes, there’s going to be definitely exchanges and questions and informational requests that discuss in depth whatever questions the Yankees may have about their future.”
the above was from newsday today. i personally think it’s 50/50 at best that arod will stay with the yankees.people who think he won’t go to the red sox are thinking of the red sox as their father’s red sox. the new red sox organization is is a world class brand that competes quite well with the yankees. the red sox look like they are going to have two world series titles in the last 4 years. one was luck. if winning two is luck, they are extraordinarily lucky. i’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s more than luck. yeah it’s partly a crap shoot, but like the mit professor who figured out how to beat las vegas at blackjack, henry and co. has figured out how to increase their odds . one way they are increasing the odds is simply by having a much wealthier owner and a much more organized chain of command , and they take more calulated chances like matsuzaka. they make a lot of tries. this organization is more with it with the latest technology . does anyone think george and hank can sit down with henry and talk about the latest technologies?
henry and luchinno would love nothing better than stealing arod from the yankees. didn’t everyone think the yankees were going to get matsuzaka last fall?
the one good thing that would come out of arod going to the red sox would be that the yankees would wake up and realize the battle they are in. right now i think they are in denial thinking they are in control of things.
two out of four folks. what have we got? we’ve got hank .somebody shoot me.
I’m just hoping for the aforementioned punches thrown.
If we let Alex walk (which I believe we should, if he opts out), and the soxs resign Lowel. Who plays third? I certainly don’t want to see Wilson there, and I don’t want to see us trade the farm for Cabera espically given his weight problem and not being a good defender. Who is out there? I heard someone suggest moving Cano to third. Could he do it?
jennifer-
why do you think that the red sox brass drunk with winning another world series wouldn’t go after arod to stick it to the yankees? the very fact that they have ellsbury, pedroia, youkillis, papelbon, buckholtz, etc under cheap contracts allows them to pay 30+ million a year for arod. how could arod not make them a better team? manny is coming off the books in a year. shilling’s contract gone. lowell’s gone. it could be argued that the most likely place for arod to get a ring is in boston. how could he not hit in that park?
boras is on good terms with boston’s management. he is absolutely going to use the very real threat of arod going to boston to up the ante. the yankees have got to quit screwing around with the rhetoric with arod and open the vault and sign him.
just my humble opinion.
I disagree. I would only extend him 3 more years 4 at most. More than that is insane. He could have a career ending injury the first year than the Yankees are on the hook for the rest of the contract. And who do you think will be stuck paying for that? Us the fans. They can’t get insurance for the entire contract. I can’t remeber how much of it they are allowed but it isn’t much.
Wouldn’t that just endear the Sox to the rest of the baseball world winning the 2007 WS in 4 games and then signing Arod. I say let them go for it.
Whatever happens with Alex is a ‘win’ situation for the Yankees.
If he stays, awesome, we got a 50 HR 130 RBI er on our team for another _ years.
If he opts out and don’t pursue him, just as well, because, imo, opting out of whatever ginormous offer the Yankees are going to offer would show at best a huge, inflated ego.
I hope A-Rod stays, but if he leaves I won’t lose sleep over it.
Mo and Po, on the other hand…
I think this is a bunch of bull. John Farrell all the WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is a great pitching showing because he raised to great pitchers in Becket and Matsuzaka, who are better than the freaking yankees will ever have in there life. Mattingly sux and Giradi should just leave. Go RED SOXXXXX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We could put Shelley at third.
There is such a large part of me that hopes it goes down. (Arod to Boston) It would be such great entertainment, Arod would be taking prostitution to levels civilization has yet seen. Please do it.
some minor league notes
http://yesnetwork.prospero.com.....;tid=26971
Matsuzaka is a fat toad redux. Last night the first away game win in 5 attempts since Aug. 4. Don’t caaried away buddy.
* In addition, one source told the Daily News last night that “in no way would politics enter into Brian’s decision” – an indication the Yankees are not concerned about a potential public-relations hit if the popular Mattingly did not get the job.
Let Arod go to the Sox, maybe he can derail their playoff express train a bit. Geez, I wonder what his postseason production would be like at $30/yr. 1.3 RBI/20 at bats??
that’s $30 Mil./yr
Okay I was going to ignore you robby. But you have gone over the line!! You should pray you never have to watch a family memeber die from alzheimer’s. It is a cruel disease. You are a very sick person, please leave!
thatwasme-
i’m with you that there would be a backlash against the red sox if they sign arod. and maybe that would be a good thing. maybe the yankees would wake up.
it’s in the red sox best interests to at least get in the way to pry arod from the yankees. it works for them if he opts out and signs with someone else. they took a similar tact with matsuzaka. if he didn’t sign with them, at least he wouldn’t be signing the yankees. boras seems to want arod to choose to opt out. the red sox want arod to opt out. this is a perfect storm for arod and boras.
and rebecca-
if arod goes, the price for posada and rivera wouldskyrocket because the yankees would have to stop the bleeding.
jennifer, why don’t you let robby explain what alsheimers is first.
thatwasme. lol very true, I was going to comment on his spelling error but decided to leave it alone.
At least he made it beyond the 4th and to the 5th inning.
D Matsuzaka (W, 1-0) 5.1 3 2 2 3 5 0 101-66 3.37
Why does what A-Rod does have an influence on Po and Mo?
The Yankees are already gonna offer them c. $40 mill…do they both want like $70 mill for three years or something?
little robby has matured into Rob before our eyes.
speaking of george ( and that wasn’t cool robby) i feel bad for him being in this position. i would hope they give him plaque on the wall of the new yankee stadium while he can still understand it. not a plaque from ownership which would look self serving, but from the players and coaches who have played and worked for him. george deserves it.
that said, george needs more help than hal and hank if he’s going to compete with henry and the red sox.
Living in Mass. I can tell you the amount of the fans dislike of ARod defies description. Replacing Mike Lowell with ARod won’t sell in Beantown.
rebecca-
it’s just the way that the marketplace works. posada’s and rivera’s agents will know the yankees need their clients even more if arod leaves. they will get more.
drive 4-5
do you think that henry and luchinno care what the fans think? or the players. i think they think that if the red sox win the fans will be there.
all the red sox have to do is dangle the idea they are interested in arod and that may be enough for arod to opt out. this is going to be a high stakes game of chess. did you think the red sox were going to bid a 53 million dollar postng fee last year for matsuzaka?
no one did, i’ll say again, these are not our father’s red sox.
I would take Lowell in a heartbeat if Sox swaps him for Arod. But I don’t see it happening. If Sox is stupid enough to take that kind of risk and Arod is greedy enough to prove all his critics right then those two deserve each other, and I’ll look forward to taking pleasure in watching their joint misery for years to come.
ThatWasMe – as much as I can’t stand Matsuzake either (his 6th inning collapse is like clockwork with swiss precision), he’s lost a lot of weight don’t you think?
Randy L–I believe you, but the optimist in me doesn’t want to!
But I stand firm. My biggest concern is Po and Mo…if they need to re-sign A-Rod to keep Po and Mo, then by all means, do it, but Po and Mo are who I care about.
I won’t be heartbroken if A-Rod leaves, I will be if Po and Mo jump ship (especially together)
Didn’t notice Dee, I watched little of the game, jumping in and out. I did have the MLB package during the season and had an opportunity to watch him pitch often. As far as I can see, he is still a work in progress, some think after this season in the USA, he will acclimate and step up in 2008. I’m not sure, he has bouts where he has a problem getting the ball in the strike zone. We might have seen him at his best.
I agree, Randy I. No A-Rod, No WS anytime soon.
Actually, even with A-Rod, the Yankees have a deficiency in their lineup because they don’t have adequate protection behind him. Which makes his accomplishment this year all the more remarkable actually.
Giambi may or may not return to form next year. He could hit 30Hrs. Then again he could spend 3 months on the DL and hit 10HRs again.
Matsui, despite his 25 HRs, was wretched but for six weeks, is too erratic at the plate, and still hasn’t demonstrated he can handle full-time duties at DH.
Posada, despite a career years, hit only about 17 HRs, and entering his 37th year, isn’t likely to hit 20+ HR’s anytime soon.
The Yankees actually could benefit from another legitimate power threat behind A-Rod.
Lose A-Rod and they’re in a lot of trouble.
The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers.
Earl Weaver
I agree pitching is the centerpiece. However, the Blue Jays demonstrated this year how an anemic offense will impede you in the AL East, notwithstanding a superb starting pitching staff.
The Yankees won’t be the Blue Jays without A-Rod but they’ll hardly be a team likely to scare Beckett, Lice-K, Halliday, Burnett, Bedard, Guthrie, Kazmir, etc.
The Yankee succes in the AL East is dependent upon elevating the pitch counts of their AL East opposition’s 1-2-3 starters and disposing of them by the 6th inning.
Without A-Rod, they’re going to have a difficult time doing that because team won’t fear throwing strikes to the rest of their line-up.
ThatWasMe – agree with you on Lice K. I don’t think the problem is the number of games or other excuses everyone is making up for him. And that’s a ton of money to pay for a #3 pitcher. I heard the Sox paid more for Mrs Matsuzake’s bi-weekly first class plane tickets than they did for Jacoby Ellsbury to play baseball all year.
thatwasme-
the old orioles had ” the oriole way” going for them too. everyone was on the same page all the way through the system. that’s what i’d like to see happen with the yankees.i’d like to see a comprhensive yankee way emerge that wouldn’t change as the yankee tea leaves change with the latest d.u.i. or other fiasco in tampa or st pete.
the only way you get a yankee way is to have cutting edge stability at the top. the owners don’t have to be rocket scientists. but if they’re not ,they have to know how to get out of the way. cashman, if given the resources and control, could keep the yankees with the red sox for the next few years, i think it will take someone younger and hungrier than him to really build the team to dominate the red sox which is how it should be. the new york market should kick the boston market’s butt. that it’s not is not reflecting well on yankee managment.
Randy L, all good points that you make about ARod. However and this may be of no concern at all to the Yankees (or Yankee fans for the moment),what does a new Arod pact at some 280 Million or so do to the demands of future Yankee free agents (and even arbitration eligible players)with the likes of Cano, Wang, Duncan, Joba, Hughes, IPK et al. coming due one day, never mind Derek Jeter – or even the demands of Mo and Po today who might think that they too deserve a bigger cut of the pie? I really don’t claim to understand the financials in this regard, so it’s just a dumb thought, but you’d have to think that new Yankee Stadium seat prices are going to go through the roof. Well, I guess that will happen no matter who offers him the mega bucks, in which case it might as well be the Yanks. I have to say however, that even though I’ve been one of his biggest defenders as a player, I’m beginning to wonder if the price we have to pay is not getting more than a bit obscene. Perhaps we should just bite the bullet and let him leave, fill in with role players in the field however we can get them in the FA market, spend some of the bucks saved on some good bullpen help and continue to develope the youngsters. I realize that may mean taking a raincheck on 2008, but we may also be surprised. Personally, I believe if ARod walks it will be all the way to Lou in Chicago where the money and love awaits.
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal if A-Rod leaves.
I agree Randy, you wonder how much input Stick Michael has with this group.
OH NO!! The wave has made it’s way to England!! HORROR of all HORRORS!!!
Yeah, but they actually sing to their national anthem…
I missed it, I was on the phone arguing with my uncle about the Yankees. It is an arguement I can’t win with him. He is right I am wrong.
My prediction is that if A-Rod splits, Cashman will try to trade for Paul Konerko, if they can persuade him to accept a trade to NY. The White Sox pondered trading him to the Angels at the deadline last year.
Incidentally, anyone know whether the Yankees are among the six teams his limited no-trade clause excludes?
I suspect the White Sox would be happy to unload his $12M salary. The question is whether they would accept a Class B prospect.

I was able to figure out that the angels on are on it.
Hmmn, I wonder why he lists the Angels among them. But thanks.
maybe he just likes Los Angeles?
And the bench coach is?
Morons even exist in England. Some idiot ran on the field, ran all around for like 3 minutes.
Maybe Pena? I would like Bowa to stay on and be the third base coach.
I loved London. It really is that amazing. I was called a twat on like my second day there. It was great!
Rebecca that isn’t a very nice term to be called.
jennifer–I’ve been called plenty worse by immediate family members.
I have pretty thick skin.
Not having a clue has certainly never stopped you from braindead posturing. I hate you.
Lacking a clue has certainly never stopped you from braindead posturing, you fat slime. I hate you.
Just spoke to Cashman…it’s Girardi!!!
Apparently Buster Olney said that when the World Series ends, which is likely to end tonight, Girardi will be named the manager. I have no link but members of another Yankees message board have confirmed the comment on Sportscenter.
Vinny that is what i’ve been reading as well. I hope it is correct, and if it is the players will have to deal with it.
Jimmy–Just spoke to Cashman?
Uh-huh. And how, exactly did you manage that?
After ESPN blew the Torre thing, I’m really skeptical!
Appropos of nothing, I really like the Vikings/Eagles colors — purple and teal. Nice.
What a messy field in London. Funny seeing a cheesehead in the stands. They said every NFL jersey is represented there. Neat.
I haven’t read any of the above posts yet. Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I kinda hope the Red Sox sweep, so the Yankees can (1) announce a manager; and (2) get hopping with A-Rod; and (3) get Mo and Posada nailed down. At this point the World Series has become almost meaningless to me. Not only do the games start late, and end late – the final score isn’t even in the morning paper. Reminiscent of if a tree falls in a forest and no one’s there to hear it, does it make a sound. You know?
Rebecca that is what worries me!
I don’t know about you guys, but i am sick of hearing buster olney and Steve Phillips on ESPN. they’re both full of themselves/
Jennifer—well, I did dream it last night…
I’m curious to know the ratings for these games. I know i’ve only watched 1/2 inning and that was the 7th last night.
“Morons even exist in England. Some idiot ran on the field, ran all around for like 3 minutes.”
That’s 3 minutes longer than any of Miami’s running Back’s today ;^)
UGH I am losing big in my fantasy football league. I had 2 players go and I only scored 13 points. My opponent had J. Addai! and he scored 28 by himself. They had 5 players go and have 73 points!! UGH!!!!
Anyone check out nomaas.org? They seem to have Peter in their crosshairs. lol
Will today finally be Chad’s last game? Will it finally start the Kellen Clemens era? Well with Manidiot at the helm likely not!
Now that Torre is gone and the season over nomaas has all this pent up anger to direct somewhere.
Anyone think there is any chance of an announcement being made tomorrow? Or do I just need to set my dvr for Tuesday?
Mangini did the right thing by keeping Pennington as the starting QB. If Clemens was ready, he would be starting already without a doubt. The coach doesn’t want to send up the white flag yet. Clemens will probably start next year, but not this year. Either Clemens isn’t distinguishing himself practice or Mangini is missing the signs. I think I’d go with the former.
There is a likely chance of a Manager choice annoucement on Monday (IMO) if the evil doers win number 4 this evening.
but Clemens played in Baltimore and played _well_
You can’t get second chances forever, and I’d hate for next year to be wasted by Clemens just getting used to the NFL or whatever…
Lets be honest. This is a lost season. It is a good chance to see what we have in Clemens. If he is crap (which I’ll be really ticked about, since they passed up on a few qb who are doing pretty well (Cutler etc)) Than we should have at least the 3rd pick and could try another qb.
That was one game. And he still lost.
And the Jets have only won one game!! I’m so glad I didn’t committ to buying any games from friends. #1 the team sucks, #2 the team stinks, #3 the parking stinks, #4 did I mention that the team stinks?
Brutal article on Scott Boras in the New Yorker this week.
In case you missed it:
http://www.newyorker.com/repor.....ct_mcgrath
I had fun in the game I went to!
But that was maybe because I was sitting in the second row…
this is what it has come down to. the yankee fans talk about arod and his contract and obscene money and red sux fans talk about rings..
david ortiz gave the sux a hometown discount(look it up if you think I am lieing) and aord and his parasite boras thing=k about 1 thing. and it ain’t rings and it is green!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea arod may leave and then the Yanks will be ????No worse off, he is a soft HOF player.. His salary screws things up for every team and in the playoffs he plays like brad hawpe…
let’s talk about how much to pay him and lenght of contract and lose in the 1st round next yr for change….
let him go and move in a new direction..
His new nickname is ALex the Titanic…..
It’s Girardi..bet the farm!!!
Why is this website so problematic? I have trouble refreshing it, and when it does work…it is slower than Giambi from home to first.
I hope its Joe G. But, it still seems very much up in the air. Would like to at least hear a good, substantiated rumor.
Buster Olney reporting on espn.com its Girardi. What does this mean for Donnie Baseball?
DadInIowa-
I’m glad it’s not just me — I have a lot of trouble with this website, too. I usually load a game of solitaire to play while I wait for the site to refresh!
All Buster Olney has reported today is if he had to GUESS, key word is GUESS it would be Girardi. Also that HIS pick would be Girardi, he has nothing to back up any facts it is just who he would choose. That has nothing to do with who the Yanks will choose. WS will probably end tonight since the rockies are sleeping, it will take a day or so to finish the contract, so I would think the announcement will be Tuesday whether Suxs win tonight or tomorrow.
lovin’ the new one post per day diet u got us on lately Pete.
Pete’s just getting ready for Halloween, cos he knows how funny it’ll be if he announces it on Wednesday, and it ends up being Peña and we’re all like ‘dude, are you serious’, etc.
Meanwhile, of the 12 NFL games being played today, if the Jets can pull through a win , I will have gone 11-1.
Jets/Giants parking is awful. It takes forever and a day to get out of that parking lot after a game.
You picked the Jets? That is a pretty gutsy pick. Did you see him almost get Coles killed!
My heart was in my throat seeing Coles on the ground and not moving!! I cannot stand Chad Pennington. He continues to lay his recivers out there with the passes that take a day to get there.
well the dream is all over I had hopes for Tony Pena to be the head manager but I can live w/ Girardi even though I thought Pena was more suited. I hope the Yankees put Tony Pena where he belongs in the bench coach role. His IQ in baseball is very high, they better not let him go.
I have trouble believing Ar0d & Boras will accept this initial offer from the Yankees. Although it may seem unlikely, I could possibly see Arod getting a bigger deal elsewhere if he opts out.
It’s hard to believe the Steins would sit idly if Arod opts out, while Boras negotiates with teams such as the Red Sox and Mets. If either of those teams snags Arod from NYY, Boston seemingly guarantees themselves the AL East, while the Mets claim the NL East.
To imply that the Red Sox would not pony up the cash needed to sign Arod to a mega-deal, is simply foly. If they are willing to throw $50mil+ just to win negotiation rights for Matszusaka, why shouldn’t we expect Henry & Co to throw their money around once more?
The Mets may have Wright at third, but as Davd Wright has said himself, a move to 1st base to accomodate Arod would be something he’s willing to do. The Mets have a new stadium opening up, and signing Arod would help the Mets BIG TIME. Keep in mind the revenue and ratings increase of their Sports Network…
The Yankees should really make sure they know who they are dealinng with, Boras would not opt out of a mega deal liek this if he did’nt KNOW their was a big offer awaiting him in FA…
It’s Girardi. Atleast we won’t have to see Boston on the back pages of the NY papers tomorrow.
I sincerely doubt that Lohud will upgrade it’s network just for us, this blog. It’s a shame there is no real good Yankee blog available on par with what the Boston Globe provides for Red Sox fans at Boston.com. A small group of Yankee has survived on that site for a few years now on a thread “Dem Yanks”. It has been very difficult the past weeks with the trolls, but anyway there are some fine Yankee fans on that one thread, Buck Foston, Pinstripe Zac, Yankee Diva, JFromTheBronx, Vic and of course myself. I see that some of the others have drifted over here too. We have over time developed friendships with the other side and try to be respectful, although tweaking is fair game and part of the fun. I have to say it very refreshing to come onto this site and share my thoughts with just Yankee fans, fans who in my short time here have enlightened me much more than one time. We post many of Peter’s columns as well as others.
I just don’t know why one of the NY dailies do not provide something close to this site for our fans, the Boston Globe is afterall owned by the NY Times, at any rate here it is, take a peek.

The fact that the Yankees are only going to go $1 million over what A-Rod is already making is laughable. Unless Borass and A-Rod see $30+ A-Rod will be a Cub, Met, or an Angel. Write it down. There is no reason why he wouldn’t get more than $28 mil a year outside of the Bronx.
Than let him leave if he doesn’t like it. He should give the Yankees a hometown “discount”.
I agree Vinny, but the teams that are willing to pay that much also have to consider how it will effect any other contracts they may have in the future. Meaning teams like Boston and Anaheim. A raise for Arod is a raise for Manny and Ortiz for example, or Vlad. You wonder how many teams want to go down that road. Or on the other hand, SF could possibly up the ante but then again if Arod is to accept, he is back in the situation he had in Texas. I think he accepts, just my opinion.
Everyone who’s quick to write A-Rod off, who bats 4th when he’s gone?
arod lovers let him leave and you can root for him and his new team. and arods new team can win as many championships as his old teams..
who cares about the punk…
please LEAVE AROD AND ALL THE MONEY TALK I AM TIRED OF YOUR SHOW………………BYE PLEASE GO BYE…….
“Academically, and theoretically, they could make an offer, Boras said as the Steinbrenner claimants prepared to hash out the Yankees’ future. Then, speaking of Rodriguez, he switched to the past tense: “He enjoyed playing in New York.
nice…
1) I picked the Jets on a matter of principle but told everyone to go pick the Bills if they were serious.
2) What’s the source on Girardi aside from ESPN and the Daily News and my dream last night?
3) If A-Rod leaves, have Robbie bat in the four hole. I think he’s good enough to clean up. Or there’s always Bobby.
On fox pregame, they asked Joe about it. He smiled and said nothing yet!! LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!! YOU KNOW!! I’ll see you in da Bronx on Tuesday.
“Anyone check out nomaas.org? They seem to have Peter in their crosshairs. lol”
I don’t even get what they’re whining about this time. I don’t see that particular joke anywhere in their recent history. Their whole front page is more and more whining about Torre. Do they believe they invented the “Insert funny caption under a picture” idea? Are they really that full of themselves?
Jennifer–was it a smile as in an I-can’t-lie-to-save-my-life smile?
If Arod goes and they sign Posada, I think you’ll see him in the 4th hole.
OMG, My mind could be tricking me but I find Joe G’s unprompted little exchange with Jeanne Z about being “still a former MLB manager” at the booth just now telling. He obviously knows something and I doubt he’d bring the subject up himself if the news is not good. He just has the look of someone who knows he’ll be crowned king tomorrow. I hope I’m right!
I wanted to be Manny for halloween, got the long black dreadlock wig, but I can’t find a blue vacuum cleaner bag anywhere.
Jennifer, Rebecca –
I just replayed it, Girardi brought the subject up first himself before Jeanne asked him! Jeanne introduced the booth and when it was Joe’s turn he emphasized he’s “still a former manager”! Then Jeanne asked if there’s news, he said nothing extra to add, with a smile.
Ok Girardi, if it’s you, wink once at the camera, if not, wink twice…
No Maas is a cutting edge site. As such, offending people is unavoidable. Yet it’s apparent to me that it isn’t really done with any malice. They just have a distinct point of view. It’s not like the targets of their barbs don’t have the ability to respond, if they so choose.
So apparently Joe G can’t like to save his booty?
Joe, you’re cute when you lie.
Yea. My dreams don’t lie. Except for that one time.
wow…Manny actually ran all the way past first base on a ground ball DP.
“No Maas is a cutting edge site. As such, offending people is unavoidable. Yet it’s apparent to me that it isn’t really done with any malice. They just have a distinct point of view. It’s not like the targets of their barbs don’t have the ability to respond, if they so choose.”
First, cutting edge how? I’ve seen their stuff a million times before.
And while some of it may not have malice, you can’t tell me for one second that they don’t hate Joe Torre. They do everything they can to rip him even now after he’s already gone. Most of the Torre haters I see at least offer a “Glad he’s gone, but thanks for the good memories Joe”, which is what a classy guy like Torre deserves. No Maas goes out of their way to rip him more. And I don’t really get what their beef was with what Peter posted.
They just seem very full of themselves. The sad thing is I honestly don’t know if that whole “If we had 200 million to spend we’d never lose a game” is honestly a joke or not. It seems ridiculous and clearly just a joke, except the way they act at their site, they really do seem to think they’re the smartest people around when it comes to baseball.
wow…Manny actually ran all the way past first base on a ground ball DP. He must have seen someone he wanted to say hello to down in the RF corner.
I missed Joe G lying?
Damn.
I read that Joba and Roger hung out at a Texas U game this weekend.
“First, cutting edge how? I’ve seen their stuff a million times before.”
Well, certain themes are ongoing, running jokes perhaps, but that doesn’t diminish the wit they usually display, which I would demonstrate if I could post some of their stellar photoshop work here.
“And while some of it may not have malice, you can’t tell me for one second that they don’t hate Joe Torre. They do everything they can to rip him even now after he’s already gone. They don’t hate Torre as a man, they hated his managing, or more accurately his gross mismanagement of, for example, the bullpen.
Let’s not forget that Torre didn’t leave in a very classy fashion, as Murray Chass used incontrovertible facts to conclusively demonstrate. Torre claimed that he was insulted by the incentive laden contract he was offered, but his prior contracts contained precisely the same incentives.
When you have a significant segment the public asserting that Torre is responsible for the successes but not for the failures, I don’t think it’s so unfair that one site remains consistently critical.
“They just seem very full of themselves. The sad thing is I honestly don’t know if that whole “If we had 200 million to spend we’d never lose a gameâ€? is honestly a joke or not. Personally, I love that line for reasons that I won’t go into. The line typifies a point of view that is summarized by the name No Maas.
There was a time when the Yankees were wasting money and hyping “great white hopes” like Maas. Fortunately, those days appear to be over now that Cashman is in charge, but rather than merely being cheerleaders, No Maas acts as a gadfly, unafraid to run counter to the CW to point of aspects of the Yankees (or others) when they behave in suboptimal ways.
Kyle,
I agree about NoMaas. They think they have caught Pete in an inconsistency, yet it appeared that there was a power vacuum within the Yanks front office in the days just before and then following Torres departure. I think Pete was right. If there had NOT been a struggle or internal debate of some kind, Cashman would have immediately implemented his plan. Cash may have the power now, but at the end of the season I am not sure that was true. And Pete’s post about no one being in charge at the time looks more true because of it. I think Cash took the reins, but I bet he had to fight for them.
And whoa, to say that Chass “used incontrovertible facts to conclusively demonstrate” anything is a stretch. From what I have read there was one other contract that had an incentive. If there were others please point to a website.
And what other manager had as part of his incentive: “get to the World Series or you are gone”. And no chance to even negotiate? He flew to Florida to talk face to face, they turned him down. And he has no class?
We can all agree to disagree about the circumstances regarding Torres’ departure, but let’s at least try to stay with the facts that we know. Torre said he felt insulted by the terms and the way the contract was handed to him. He makes the post-season twelve straight years and no negotiation? And now Hank Stein says they will show patience for the next manager? The inconsistencies are mind-boggling.
They wanted him gone. They just did not have the cajones to say it.
Sad but true, the Yankees will not hire a minority to be the Mgr. of the team…..So you can remove Tony Pena from the list……
Just email Pete. Don’t reply.
Is the NL really this bad?
In response to an earlier comment by Jennifer (I think)….I had read I think in Baseball America awhile ago, they had Cano at Thid base.He did play a handful of games at 3B in Trenton in 2003.
I did hear that Tony Pena is willing to stay on the coaching staff if he doesnt get the managers job.And I agree that he should be the bench coach, but only if larry Bowa doesnt return.I think Bowa for bench and Pena for 3RD.
But I did hear that Seattle wants Bowa for their bench (why he would go there is beyond me)
Donnie Baseball—-I hate to say it,might become another Yogi Berra situation.Maybe he comes back to Old Timers Day,but thats about it,I hope that I am wrong.
Its Time for a change in Management philosphy,we all write/read about it here on this blog.We saw how Joe Torre would not bunt in certain situations,or wear out a relief pitcher,or not hit and run sometimes. How bout taking 38pitches out of the game the other day for the Japanese lefty when a righty was at bat, would Torre have done that?NO!! JOE GIRARDI FOR MANAGER anything else is just the same!
looks like “joltin joe girardio” according to jon heyman
thank goodness! hey pete i thought you said it was donnie baseball??

Dude, Yanks, make it official, ok?
I’ve got massive thesis work and this is distracting!
If Girardi indeed gets the job, I’d hope Mattingly would go to AAA and manage at Scranton for a year. It would give him a chance to show he can lead a team and give him valuable training for a job wherever it is.
I’m torn on who I wnat managing the team. ideally I’d love Mattingly to lead a new Yankees dynasty to finally get his ring and get into the Hall as a manager. I also worry a bit about Girardi handling the young pitchers. Yet, Mattingly hasn’t convinced me either. Girardi certainly would be a fair choice.
Pete,
I was wondering what you think about the yankees chances of being able to retain donnie baseball as bench coach if girardi gets the nod?
“Let’s not forget that Torre didn’t leave in a very classy fashion, as Murray Chass used incontrovertible facts to conclusively demonstrate. Torre claimed that he was insulted by the incentive laden contract he was offered, but his prior contracts contained precisely the same incentives.”
That’s untrue. First off, prior contracts did not contain the same incentives. They contained incentives, yes, but not to this extent. Second, they contained incentives because Torre requested them. He wasn’t told “You need incentives because you need motivation” when he signed those contracts. Third, there was more to it that incentives as Torre said, it was also about the amount of time. And before you mention this alleged contract extension he was working on, an extension isn’t the same as actually signing him to a one year contract. Fourth, the Yankees had no interest whatsoever in negotiating. If they REALLY wanted him, would they have negotiated? if they really want Girardi and Girardi says “Hey, let’s talk about the deal you’re offering”, do you honestly believe they’ll say “Nope, take it or get out”? Absolutely not. That doesn’t mean they’d cave into all his demands but you better believe they’d at least talk to him about the contract and see if they can come to a deal that works for both sides. They made no attempt to do so with Torre, showing they really didn’t want him that bad.
Also from all accounts Cashman was one of Torre’s only supporters, so their constant claims that this was a plan of Cashmans have no basis in fact. It’s just something they came up with because otherwise they sound bad when they claim Torre was given a legitimate offer they wanted him to take.
As far as the Photoshop stuff, yes, they do a good job. I’m certainly not saying they don’t. What I am saying is using Photoshop in that way isn’t a cutting edge thing that has never been seen before. Likewise, funny captions under a picture is not something that has never been seen before. And that’s fine. I have no problem with that. They do a good job with that stuff, good for them. I only have a problem when they seem to be whining that someone is ripping them off. You didn’t invent this stuff, fellas. If Peter took something directly from their site and passed it off as their own, that’s one thing. If their complaint is that he posted a picture with a made up caption underneath, they need to face reality. That’s all I’m saying.
Rebecca,
You should have written your thesis on the Yankees. That way this could be considered research. I actually did that and concluded the Yankees would have a new Stadium in the Bronx. Took ten years, but I was right.
YankeeJosh–Hah!
However, I’m not quite sure how I could relate the Yankees to medieval European History as is my concentration! If I was doing American history, of course, it’d be easy, but as far as I know they didn’t play baseball in 1485!
Rebecca,
It’s a challenge to be sure. My major was geography so I focussed on the desired locations for Stadiums, the Meadowlands, the West Side and the Bronx and outlined the forces behind each. Was fun to do but I swear by the end I couldn’t wait for it to be over.
a-rod will opt out per si.com
For anyone interested Heyman’s article on A-Rod opting out is here:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html
The same team earlier this season that beat Beckett and Schilling in Fenway, swept the Yankees in Coors, now have Lester looking like Koufax and at home.
Kyle,
Read Chass’s article from this past week. If you can’t find it let me know and I’ll link it.
The incentives were virtually identical except that the ones offered now would have paid Torre more.
Wait a minute. Are you seriously arguing that incentives are only OK if Torre request them? That’s not the way negotiations work.
Remember. He said he felt insulted by their inclusion. That was obviously false.
If it was the amount of time (years), then that should have been his sole line of argument, but it wasn’t. He is now so arrogant that he thought the media would never call him on his precious contracts.
You say “by all accounts.” So you think that Cashman is lying? If so, please post links to his pattern of lies over the years. He hasn’t been caught in a lie, Torre has. I believe Cashman.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion on what is cutting edge. I won’t address the Peter issues. It’s not my place.
