Breaking news: Torre to Dodgers

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Oct 29, 2007 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Journal News is reporting that Joe Torre will be hired as manager of the Dodgers. The announcement could come as soon as the next or two once a buyout of Grady Little is completed.

Don Mattingly is in line to join his staff. Torre also is interested in Kevin Long. I suspect Long will stay with the Yankees, but he is in demand.

UPDATE, 12:15 a.m.: The Times is reporting the story as well.

It has sure been a quite a few weeks in baseball. The job makes sense for Torre. He’s closer to his home in Hawaii and he knows Southern California from his time as an announcer for the Angels. It also makes sense for Don Mattingly given that his son, Preston, is in the Los Angeles organization.

If the Rockies made the World Series, how far away can the Dodgers be?

Here’s hoping Clint Hurdle names Torre to the coaching staff for the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium next season.

UPDATE, 2:44 p.m.: Here is the story for Tuesday’s newspaper.

Good luck Joe and Don. Now I have an NL team to root for.

    GO DODGERS!

  2. EDFl October 29th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Good luck to Joe and Donnie. We’ll miss your class and dignity

  3. OurKidsPlayDifferentSports October 29th, 2007 at 10:17 pm

WOW. I wonder if he will break the news when he is on letterman tonight?

  4. DadinIowa October 29th, 2007 at 10:18 pm

I haven’t heard it on espn, yet

  5. Rob October 29th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Since it’s been pointed out that I’m not a real fan for voicing my disgust with the dismissal of Joe – I will just state that I only wish the Dodgers were in a position to make the Yankees pay for their stupidity. But if this is true – good luck to Joe. His home town team as a kid – living in Hollywood will suit him well.

  6. bh blue October 29th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

nice that Joe could find a home. Hope they don’t insult him with a measly 5mil contract. maybe he can take a$$rod with him for a security blanket.

  7. PittsburghYankeeFan October 29th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Scott Proctor, watch out–better get that arm some jamba juice!

  8. DadinIowa October 29th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Is this confirmed by anyone? It seems awfully quick.

  9. JFud26 October 29th, 2007 at 10:21 pm

proctor should be on official watch

  12. Dead Arm October 29th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

The real loser in this whole miss should be pretty clear now: Scott Proctor.

  13. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

    I’m insulted !!

  14. Chris October 29th, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Wait a minute! Isn’t Grady Little still the manager? Did they kill him or something?

Can’t wait for Clueless Joe to be exposed without a huge payroll advantage.

  15. Rudy October 29th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

    Poor Scott Proctor.

  16. Grace October 29th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

    What??

So Torre will see Proctor again

And if Tsao stay with LAD, then Joe will become the manager who could work with all three Taiwanese pitchers(Kuo,Tsao,Wang) in MLB….

  17. Rockin' Rich October 29th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

    Nice scoop, Peter!

  18. Class Police October 29th, 2007 at 10:23 pm

Hello the Journal News (pete and his paper) are the ones BREAKING this news you know reprts say that…. This means the reports are coming from the Journal news

    Good work Pete

  21. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

Big Question: Will Torre be able to coexist with Kobe???

  22. randy l October 29th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

wow! this is the day that just won’t quit.
would torre like to have arod join him ?
    you betcha.
torre’s coaching staff? mattingly, guidry? long?
no ,there is absolutely no disarray with the yankees.
good think the dodgers don’t need a catcher. what about a closer? hope not.

  23. Girardi October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Nice one, Rob. Your loyalty’s with Torre instead of the team.

Go root for the Dodgers, you joker. Or become a NY sports writer.

  24. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

_Wait a minute! Isn’t Grady Little still the manager? Did they kill him or something?_

ESPN is reporting Grady Little is heading to Boston!

  25. Donna October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Peter, how come no one else is reporting this? Last night, others started reporting the A-Fraud thing right after Heyman…

  26. Andrea October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Somewhere in LA, Scott Proctor is crying himself to sleep.

  27. Global Warming October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

In the NL, I’ll be rooting for them both.

  28. Rockin' Rich October 29th, 2007 at 10:27 pm

Must have come from the Letterman taping, right?

  29. emobacca October 29th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

    Good luck Joe

  30. Stewman23 October 29th, 2007 at 10:28 pm

The stage is set….Yanks vs. Dodgers, New style vs. Old Style..A world series for the ages is upon the horizon for 2008

  31. down Proctor October 29th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Yes,Poor Proctor never get a chance to rest his arm,Little also kind of used him heavily.

  32. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 29th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Scott Proctor—Dude, get out of Hollywood like yesterday!

All joking aside, I wish Joe the best of luck. I shall proceed to root for the Dodgers, except for two occasions:

    1) when they play the Cubs,
    2) When they play the Yankees, of course!

  33. Nystre October 29th, 2007 at 10:29 pm

    poor scott proctor

  34. Don Capone (DesignatedBlogger) October 29th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

So Torre will be in LA and ARod will be in Anaheim. I hope they both tank.

  35. JonMichel October 29th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Just wondering isn’t Torre still under contract until the end of the year. So, it looks like the Dodgers will have to get us some draft picks for Torre.

  36. whoa October 29th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

    The emperor has no clothes.

  37. McLovin October 29th, 2007 at 10:36 pm

I’ll def. be pullin for the dodgers in the NL. I think it’s funny how he’ll be reunited w/ scott proctor. I’m just hopin Mariano doesn’t follow Joe to LA. It wouldn’t surprise me, but hopefully the yankees offer him enough money that he’ll stay.

  38. Andrea October 29th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

I guess we’ll see where Mo’s loyalty is stronger.

  39. 56Bomber October 29th, 2007 at 10:40 pm

So Torre was pursuing Grady’s job while Grady still has it. Nice. Lou would have no part of that last year when it was Joe’s job to go after. Torre’s luster is fading.

  40. Global Warming October 29th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

“I’ll def. be pullin for the dodgers in the NL. I think it’s funny how he’ll be reunited w/ scott proctor. I’m just hopin Mariano doesn’t follow Joe to LA. It wouldn’t surprise me, but hopefully the yankees offer him enough money that he’ll stay.”

They have Saito, they don’t need Mo.

  41. Gus G. October 29th, 2007 at 10:41 pm

Somewhere Scott Proctor’s arm just got pins and needles. Seriously though, I know have an NL team to root for. If Donnie decides to go back to Indiana, perhaps Zim dusts himself off for another year? Don’t know how his health is for traveling… but it definately is intruiging.

  42. G. Love October 29th, 2007 at 10:42 pm

Bet the Mets are kicking themselves right about now. Don’t think for a minute they weren’t entertaining doing to Willie what the Dodgers just did to Grady.

I think the Mets probably thought they could bring in Torre after 60 games next season. Obviously,

Torre didn’t stay unemployed that long. Good for him and for Mattingly. It’ll be weird seeing Joe and especially Donnie in Dodger blue for sure.

I hope Proctor is ready to go 2 innings on back to back nights starting opening day, lol. His fastball should be clocking 78mph by his 60th appearance of the season in the first week of June.

If Pettite or Mo follows Torre, then I will officially say that Cashman, Levine, Hank/Hal have had a really lousy off season.

  43. whoa October 29th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

There better not be any of those insulting incentives in his contract.

  44. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

    _The emperor has no clothes._

Yeah, they don’t wear much out there, being it’s sunny year-around.

  45. Jason October 29th, 2007 at 10:44 pm

    Good for Joe and Don!!!

  46. roundabout October 29th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

LA buying out Little and hiring Torre has been rumored for days. Glad our hometown paper got it first – officially.
I guess A-Rod isnt going to that California team, for sure, now lol …
    We got Wilson Betemit ;)

  47. VOIII October 29th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Kim Jones is reporting that she knew Torre would go to LA because he had a deal in place two months ago :)

  48. Andrea October 29th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Saito’s actually quite good. I think his ERA and WHIP this year were better than Papelbon’s. I forget the actual numbers, but I think he and JJ Putz are the only 2 (that I can remember…) that are better.

  49. midlandtx October 29th, 2007 at 10:46 pm

Scott Proctor better double up on his winter workouts.

  50. whoa October 29th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

“Yeah, they don’t wear much out there, being it’s sunny year-around.”

I think I’m going to be sick.

  51. Greg October 29th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

anyone have this confirmed with another source. I know Pete is usually reliable, but still I’d like to see another source.

  52. kd October 29th, 2007 at 10:48 pm

Does this take the dodgers out of the running for Arod? My guess is that the two don’t want to hang out with eachother anymore

  53. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

    Talk ’bout PRESSURE cookers!

Will Torre be able to juggle the massive egos of Paris, Lindsay, and Britney?

  54. ThatWasMe October 29th, 2007 at 10:52 pm

Scott Proctor, peace be with you.

  55. G. Love October 29th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

    Pete,

On a side note, can you confirm that John Henry and Scott Boras sat next to one another at the recent Celtics/Cavaliers game on Friday night 10/26/07?

Arod is going to Boston people. Pete needs to go all Woodward and Bernstein and find the mole inside the Boston front office who will reveal what went down this weekend. Somewhere, somehow, deal terms were discussed and agreed upon.

My feeling is that if they went to the game together and kept running into one another during the World Series in Boston and Colorado as has been reported, Arod’s opt out announcement was meant to coincide with Boston winning the series as a double whammy to the NY Yankees organization and their fans. I’m sure Boras and the Red Sox thought it would be cute to announce Arod is leaving NY on the night they won the Series.

The timing of it got screwed up as Boras got a little giddy knowing that the Red Sox will go 10 years and 300 million and give Arod SS so he can set the all time record for HR’s as a SS finally.

I just want to make sure what I heard is correct about Boras and Henry “coincidentily” sitting with each other Friday night at the game.

My prediction, Arod will do the dog and pony show and go to a few towns like SF and LA and then around Turkey Day he’ll sign with the Sox just to make it look less obvious.

There’s a huge story here about collusion and back channel dealings with Boras and the Sox.

I don’t believe this Gammons nonsense about Arod returning to Texas for a second. It’s all smoke screens.

  56. Dr. Acula October 29th, 2007 at 10:56 pm

_Kim Jones is reporting that +she knew+ Torre would go to LA because he had a deal in place +two months ago+_

    That’s IT!

Kim is my new stock broker!

  57. midlandtx October 29th, 2007 at 10:59 pm

OK. Firstly, regarding 10:46 PM, shame on me for not reading the other 32 comments mentioning Proctor before adding my own. Secondly, kudos to Peter and his audience for being that quick, smart, and on the money.

I guess we’ll see if Joe remembers the art of the double-switch and answers all those critics of his in-game management. And too bad the Dodgers have no place to put Bonds. I think Torre could manage this guy as well or better than anyone else.

  58. pat October 29th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

Per Sweeney Murti this afternoon on WFAN

Torre and A-Rod did a 180 in their relationship in 2007 season and the two are really good with each other now.

  59. Jeff NJ October 29th, 2007 at 11:01 pm

How can real Yankee fans not root for this new Dodger team? I think A Rod will join them for sure.

  60. hmmm October 29th, 2007 at 11:02 pm

this is a nice situation for Torre. tons of young talent coming up through the LA system.

not sure if 2008 is the year, but this team could be pretty good in a year or 2.

good on him. wish him the best.

good on the yankees for getting girardi.

sometimes change is best for everyone.

  61. hmmm October 29th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

“I just want to make sure what I heard is correct about Boras and Henry “coincidentilyâ€? sitting with each other Friday night at the game. ”

you do know Boras represents more than one client, right?

he represents Matsuzaka and JD Drew.

  62. randy l October 29th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

    G. Love-
why would henry and boras collude in public with 300 million at stake? if no one saw them getting together, it’d make more sense. i haven’t seen anything where the red sox owners are upset at boras however.
if the red sox do sign arod ,they will have the uber team they said they had no interest in being.manny comes off the books after this year so it wouldn’t surprise me to see arod go there.

  63. Todd October 29th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

When did Torre’s contract expire? Thought it was Oct 31?? Tampering??

  64. Andrea October 29th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

hmmm: I was saying that too, before the blog cut me off. Just because Boras is hanging out with Boston folks doesn’t mean anything about A Rod. If we saw Mrs. Rod hanging out with them, then we’d have to do some wondering.

  65. Bob October 29th, 2007 at 11:18 pm

Seems you really have a scoop here Peter. Don’t find this on any other site.

  66. JJNJ October 29th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

My condolences to Scott Proctor’s arm.

  67. GO DODGERS! October 29th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

    GO DODGERS!!

Not too sure about bringing in all these skanks, but anything is better than that moron grady gump.

    Dodgers vs. Skanks in 08

    GO DODGERS!

    THINK BLUE!

  68. G. Love October 29th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

You’re naive if you think that Boras and the Red Sox front office are not both pompous and arrogant enough to do it out in the open.

No one in Boston, outside of Gammons, have really had anything negative to say about Boras’ misstep.

The “odd timing” remark by Lucchino was hardly an indictment.

I hope he goes to the Red Sox. Arod will destroy that clubhouse and he’ll be locked into a 10 year deal in Hell.

I just hate that the Red Sox may have negotiated a deal when they were not allowed to.

At least we’ll get their 1st round pick as compensation. Hopefully, it’s the next Ruth.

  69. Boston Dave October 29th, 2007 at 11:23 pm

I love Torre and Mattingly but I can’t root for the Dodgers. I guess I am too loyal to the Yankees and I’d rather have the Yankees say “you should have stayed” than hear Torre and Mattingly succeed and say “good riddance”.

  70. Todd October 29th, 2007 at 11:26 pm

Dying to see what Joe is paid!!

  71. gianthinker October 29th, 2007 at 11:27 pm

Good for Torre but its gonna really suck to see Donny in another uniform. But its only the Yankees fault so…

  72. Bobcat October 29th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Contracts are often signed with an “effective date”. The “effective date” of Torre’s contract obviously won’t take effect until his contract with the Yankees’ expires.

Secondly, Torre has said all along, he be interested in the Dodgers’ job “if it became available”. Apparently, it became available.

Third, what do you folks care about Torre? He was run out of town. Yankees’ fans have their own issues to fuss over.

  73. oh October 29th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

    Proctor… No

  74. pat October 29th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

Bill Madden from the Daily News just said on TV that the Yankees front office was happy and celebrating A-Rod’s opt out this morning. That’s not what Hank would have had us believe with his statements today.

  75. Boston Dave October 29th, 2007 at 11:33 pm

bobcat, 90% of the posters in here are wishing torre luck. what are you talking about? i personally will wish him luck but cant root for the dodgers over the yankees. is that wrong? jeeze.

  76. #9 October 29th, 2007 at 11:34 pm

    Hmmmm….

    (Cut to dream sequence)

    Dodger game circa 2008…

Mo closing out a game – then Jorge coming out to congratulate him – with Joe & Donnie coming out of dugout to shake their hands on a job well done…

(Shades of Nettles & Gossage celebrating as Padres in ’84)

  77. Boston Dave October 29th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

pat – i hope that is an exaggeration. no need to be celebrating. they should be busy preparing monster contracts for posada, rivera, an extension for pettite… and now even a deal for kevin long.

  78. G.R. October 29th, 2007 at 11:35 pm

I had never watched baseball until the 1981 WS when I saw Ron Cey get beaned and come back to play. I became a Dodgers fan and then, living where I do, couldn’t see any games. I started watching the Yankees in 1985 when a friend who used to play with Dave Winfield in college got a satellite so we could watch Yankees games. I’ve been an avid Yankees fan since, but I can make the Dodgers my second team!
I’m for a Yankees/Dodgers WS! But it would have to be “The Yankees Win” for me!Dodger blue just doesn’t come close to that midnight blue interlocking NY!

  79. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 29th, 2007 at 11:37 pm

I imagine it will be a looooonnnggg time before the Yanks deal with Bora$ again.

  80. CGramazio October 29th, 2007 at 11:39 pm

It makes sense for a Brooklyn boy to end up with the Dodgers. I’m sure Joe was a Brooklyn Dodger fan as a kid. They’ll spin this one very nicely.

You see how all those nice things Pete said about Joe have paid off…he got to scoop the story. Well done intrepid reporter.

  81. pat October 29th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

Madden also said his story in tomorrows paper will lay out where A-Rod is going to be playing next year. Madden said he was the one who got the Hank quotes from Sunday night and spoke with Hank again today and there is 0% chance the Yanks deal with A-Rod now.

  82. randy l October 29th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

henry is an interesting owner in the sense he doesn’t expect to be right all the time. he goes for probability winning out over the long run. lugo and drew didn’t work out. neither did gagne, but matsuzaka eventually did. beckett did dragging lowell along for the ride.
nothing the red sox do surprises me. i do think they would sign arod. 75 homers in a year would probably win over a few red sox fans.
on the other hand arod going there would be like a pearl harbor for the yankees. they’d have to declare war on the red sox. then the gap would close again. right now without arod the yankees are about 7-8 games back of the red sox. if the red sox add arod, the yankees would be about 12-15 games back.

  83. Boston Dave October 29th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

    thanks for staying straight G.R.

  84. Andrea October 29th, 2007 at 11:40 pm

G Love: they can do it in the open if they want, and then say they were discussing Matsuzaka or Drew. Because Boras has other clients with Boston. It’s not like he’s Jerry Maguire with only one client. So it’s not really arrogance. It’s irrelavent.

  85. CaptainsCorner October 29th, 2007 at 11:42 pm

Who cares what Torre does…On to the Yanks..I just read in an article that Girardi would want(i forgot his name) a teammate from the Cubs as his pitching coach. The whole point of getting rid of Guidry was for Eiland to be there because he is close with Hughes and Joba and they are very comfortable with him. I know Girardi is allowed to pick his own coaches but it would be nice if the Yanks can see if he is ok with that. Plus bringing back Pena and or especially Kevin long because I know everyone liked him, would be good because with the vets on this team I dont think they would it or it would be a good thing to bring a new manager and totally new coaching staff in.

  86. Boston Dave October 29th, 2007 at 11:42 pm

randy l…. are you for real? i disagreed with some of your posts before but they were all valid points. i think you’ve gone over the edge now.

  87. Ducky Bent October 29th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

I guess the word that Torre is an awful in-game manager and the master of ruining arms hasn’t spread to the west coast yet.

  88. randy l October 29th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

“I imagine it will be a looooonnnggg time before the Yanks deal with Bora$ again.”
he represents about 70 something mlb players . how could the yankees not deal with him?
when boras clients drop down in the draft, the yankees are one of the few teams that can sign them. i think boras in inextricably linked with the yankees.

  89. Master Wangkee October 29th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

I guess the Dodgers thought Arod was truly concerned about the Yankees managerial situation before ownership shorted Torre. Don’t the Dodgers realize Arod likes to lie and that he doesn’t care to play for Torre at all. If Alex did want to remain with Torre and only Torre, he would’ve bolted the minute the Yanks fired Torre. I feel like the Yankees have known Alex’s true intentions for a while now and the 5 year 150 mil extension offer was a gift to Boras in exchange for the inside track on other Boras clients (namely Mark Teixeira). The Yankees effectively set the market for Boras and Arod. The bidding will start at 8 years 230 million. The Giants will win the sweepstakes with the Dodgers coming in a close second. The Torre factor’s irrelevant.

  90. henry October 29th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

Wow… Joe T was run out of town!! Yeah right !! I guess (if confirmed) it was ok for him to pull the rug from under Grady..

Grady L took all his folks to LAD and that amounted to nada.. infact Sox won after that…

Hope the same happens with Torre..

  91. Bobcat October 29th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

Not only will Scott Proctor be happy to see Torre, but I’m sure Esteban Loaiza will, too.

Kim Ng is the Assistant GM there, as well.

  92. randy l October 29th, 2007 at 11:57 pm

    boston dave-
so give me your anlaysis of how far behind the red sox the yankees are now that arod is gone. why don’t you ask hmmm how many games the swing is if arod went to the red sox. he’s pretty good with that stuff. i’m thinking it’s a 4-5 game hit with arod gone, and a 4-5 game swing if he goes to the red sox.
    so i exaggerrated. it’s only a 10-12 game swing.

  93. Mike October 30th, 2007 at 12:01 am

Posada, Mo, Petitte and A-Rod (maybe not A-Rod) to the Dodgers.

Jeter’s going to be traded there for prospects – watch.

The Yankees Organization is going into an overhaul, and I suspect a lot of changes to the line up between now and next season. :/

  94. paulaner October 30th, 2007 at 12:01 am

“i think boras in inextricably linked with the yankees.”

Yes, like some kind of weird, ungodly parasitic relationship.

    PS: Poor Scott Proctor.
He outta have the surgeons harvest the ligament now while it’s the offseason and stick it on ice for when it’s needed.

  95. Boston Dave October 30th, 2007 at 12:02 am

randy l – if the teams remain exactly the same as they are right now, minus the arod switch, fine. otherwise only a fool would even start that topic right now.

  96. Bob from NJ October 30th, 2007 at 12:03 am

    Sorry Proctor

  97. migames October 30th, 2007 at 12:03 am

mo in dodger blue? who knows.

  98. Boston Dave October 30th, 2007 at 12:05 am

    mike – i hope you’re kidding… and wrong.

  99. Boston Dave October 30th, 2007 at 12:07 am

randy l – you are right about boras and the yanks at least

  100. migames October 30th, 2007 at 12:07 am

mo in dodger blue? who knows.

3 years from now Mattingly ends up being named manager of the dodgers.

What really stings about all of this is seeing mattingly wear another uniform….sad day

  101. Bobcat October 30th, 2007 at 12:08 am

Mo is 3 months older than Takashi Saito, who is unsigned as yet for 2008.

    Could be interesting.

  102. Kill-Schill(ing) October 30th, 2007 at 12:10 am

Now, when the Yankees suck next year with Wilson Betemit their 3B striking out 200 times, I’ll have a team to root for.

F.You Hank, you and the rest of the Idiot Sons who inherit the earth.

My best to Torre and Mattingly and the Dodgers.

  103. randy l October 30th, 2007 at 12:13 am

    boston dave-
i figure that arod is worth about 5-6 games over an average third baseman. what do you figure?

  104. Nigel October 30th, 2007 at 12:14 am

The Dodgers have one of the best closers(Saito) and one of the best catchers(Martin) in the NL. I don’t see them shelling out big bucks for Mo or Jorge.

  105. Boston Dave October 30th, 2007 at 12:16 am

randy l – are we talking about 2008? just checking because i like to wait and see who will be on the team before i make predictions. i will yield to your wonderous speculative powers in this case. i simply cannot predict how many games the sox should be up over the yankees right now for…. 2008. considering the yankees won just as many games before they had arod as they did with him, its not as easy as you’re trying to make it. shocker, i know.

  106. philly October 30th, 2007 at 12:16 am

Is any other news outlet reporting this?

  107. Dee October 30th, 2007 at 12:17 am

Can’t believe I chose this big news day to be trapped in a remote location for 13 hours!

Very excited about Joe Girardi! Arod and Boras, thanks for helping us cleanse out the bad karma. I’m very excited about rebuilding. Even if we don’t make the playoff next year, so what, I don’t have an expiration date on my plan as a yankee fan.

Good luck Joe Torre and Donnie Baseball. I will root for the Dodgers if you guys end up there.

In fact, all at a sudden many teams to root for:
    1. Yanks
    2. Whoever Sox are playing
    3. Dodgers if Joe and Don end up there
    4. Whoever Pay-Rod’s team is playing

  108. kasey October 30th, 2007 at 12:18 am

as many have said, now i’ve got an NL club to pull for.

i hope he does well out there.

  109. CGramazio October 30th, 2007 at 12:19 am

Why does every single poster on this board have everybody jumping ship to go play for the Dodgers? I guess this is now the LoHud Dodgers Blog. You better change the color scheme Pete.

  110. Ghost of Scooter October 30th, 2007 at 12:23 am

Just heard you on WFAN, Pete. Nice job!

Gotta love the Schmoozer too, even though he is a Muts fan.

  111. Peter Abraham October 30th, 2007 at 12:41 am

The New York Times is reporting this as well.

As for Scott Proctor, he praised Torre when he was traded. He was a minor leaguer until Torre gave him a career.

  112. Rebecca--Optimist Prime October 30th, 2007 at 12:41 am

According to Tyler Kepner, Aaron Boone is a free agent.

    Take that as you will.

  113. Dee October 30th, 2007 at 12:43 am

I love Joe T but why’s he repeating everything he already said 3 times again on Letterman!

It’s a late night talk show, you’re not supposed to dissect how the Ian O’Connor call was so suspicious and all that stuff. Too much info! As much as I think Yanks should rule the world I don’t think the national audience knows who Ian is and what you’re talking about!

Can’t wait to watch you coach another team but no more interviews please!

  114. nud October 30th, 2007 at 12:47 am

Donnies son is in the Dodger oraganization and was a high draft pick a year or 2 back……this is unbelievable….would it really surprise anyone if Mo left…they might as well let Posada walk now 2 being he is 37…Can’t wait to see The “Great” Girardi do his magical thing next yr..What does this Yankee scholar have in mind?? what a joke Cashman is…he knows zilch about players and only about stats…

I Hope George rolls over in his grave when Matt Kemp and James Loney lead the Dodgers to a World Championship….Mattingly’s first ring will be Dodger blue

  115. Arod yells "ha!" October 30th, 2007 at 12:47 am

I guess the fact that the Dodgers previously hired Grady Little doesn’t say much for their judgment.

  116. SHARP SHOOTER October 30th, 2007 at 12:48 am

Joe, nothing but the best to ya in sunny california.

AS soon as Arod takes his prissy boy antics to those idiots
they’ll slap him back into reality, including the ravenous fan base. I can’t wait to see that fur piece grow on his chin to fit in.You know to they have to look dirty, wild, and crazy to keep their image!

  117. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08') October 30th, 2007 at 12:49 am

    PFFFT… Clown

  118. pat October 30th, 2007 at 12:49 am

When Letterman asked Torre about teams, interesting response about Dodgers.
Dodgers- they have someone under contract
Angels-they have a pretty good manager
    D-Rays- they have a manager

Sounds like 2 teams have a manager and the other has a contract to deal with. He also said don’t believe everything you read. Was he talking about Pete?

  119. Clueless Day October 30th, 2007 at 12:51 am

The Dodgers bullpen pitchers better run.

  120. EY October 30th, 2007 at 12:52 am

Hahaha I just saw this, and I am extremely amused that half-way around the United States, Scott Proctor still could not escape the grasp of Joe Torre’s bullpen handling.

Good luck Torre. I’ve always liked the Dodgers. Really rooting for him now.

Somewhere, Proctor’s arm is shivering. This is almost too funny.

Grace, don’t forget about Hu. He has shown a lot of promise this so far. Hopefully he’ll become a regular :D

  121. randy l October 30th, 2007 at 12:52 am

    boston dave-
this blog is so slow hank must be running it now.
okay dave, but your future as a forecaster is in serious jeopardy.
i’ve been saying the same thing about the yankees since last winter that they are in disarray. if you go back, i was all over marty miller before most had even heard of him. i called the hughes injury before it happened. i was unhappy about wang throwing so many sliders because he’d lose his sinker. i said it was a mistake not to extend rivera and hughes. you may disagree with me ,but if you look back i’m saying the same things i’ve said all year.
arod is a great player. there is nothing good about him leaving, but the yankees can still be good in 2008. girardi would have been my choice if i had one. so there’s hope for 2008. but it doesn’t change the fact the yankees are a mess at the top.

  122. randy l October 30th, 2007 at 12:54 am

    *i mean extend posada

  123. Dr. Acula October 30th, 2007 at 12:54 am

    Big Question:

What number will Torre wear – number 6 (his Yankee number) or number 9 (the number he used from 1969 to 1995) ??

note: he couldnt use number 9 in New York as that retired by Roger Maris. 6 was/is an upside down 9.

  124. Mike October 30th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Dodgers actually have pitching, though. :/

Penny, Schmidt, Lowe. Wells is going to be gone… cause lol. But, I mean, if Pettitte decides to follow Torre around, then that’s a fearsome pitching staff in the NL. Just needs offense (RF, 1B).

  125. Charlie October 30th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Since when does Torre live in Hawaii? I thought he lived outside NYC!

  126. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine October 30th, 2007 at 12:55 am

If this is true then good luck to Joe and Donny. I hope they find success with the Dodgers. Hopefully we can meet in the World Series. Josh Beckett is scum.

  127. Stuart October 30th, 2007 at 12:56 am

whiners.. do te red sux fans miss pedro, nomar, lowe, and others from the 2004 title???????????

  128. Stuart October 30th, 2007 at 12:58 am

i live in LA the dodgers can compete because the NL is so bad..
    they need a 3B, a CF, and a lF..

they also need 2 starters….they will compete but the NL sucks……….

  129. Clueless Day October 30th, 2007 at 12:59 am

phony yankee fans converting into dodgers fans.

  130. Catya October 30th, 2007 at 12:59 am

Kudos to you Mr T,for landing on your feet. May California love you like we do in the big apple.Mr T is like a timex, he takes a lickin and keeps on tickin!

  131. Mike October 30th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Damon sold his house in NY, right?

Damon to LA. *Loves speculation, especially ONE DAY AFTER THE WORLD SERIES.*

Renteria to the Tigers was unexpected though.

  132. The LA Yankees October 30th, 2007 at 1:02 am

  137. Dee October 30th, 2007 at 1:16 am

If Guidy and Kevin Long end up there too (but no Mo and Po please) I’ll make a Dodgers jersey in their colors except it’ll say Yankees West.

  138. CGramazio October 30th, 2007 at 1:17 am

The next update I’m expecting is Pete informing us that he’ll now be writing for the LA Times, or better yet the Tolucan Times. God speed Pete, Torre might need you on the west coast.

  139. Brandon (Girardi & Pena for 08') October 30th, 2007 at 1:17 am

Giambi for Looney and Furcal ..works for me LOL

  140. Yankee Fan in Boston October 30th, 2007 at 1:21 am

Good for Torre, this honestly makes me feel good.

I guess I’m rooting for the Dodgers in the NL now!

I just got a quote from Scott Proctor..

“Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!! Not Joe!!! I thought i was thru with him! My arm cant take it, save me! Anyone! “

  148. Clueless Day October 30th, 2007 at 1:28 am

Joe Torre will be exposed for the horrible manager he is. No 200 million dollar payroll in LA. As the yankees make the postseason once again, Joe torre will be sitting at home watching …..

    A NEW NYY ERA 08
No more dumb people running a team.

  149. Sean October 30th, 2007 at 1:29 am

pete, look at you breaking the story on ESPN, good job bud.

  150. EY October 30th, 2007 at 1:31 am

Dah…just missed you peter. Turned on the TV, it was already commercials.

*Breaking News – “Scott Proctor goes to Los Angeles Police Dept. reportedly ordered an immediate restraining order on Joe Torre”

  152. james October 30th, 2007 at 1:41 am

    Pete with the national spotlight

  153. Torre might as well take a year off or retire, THE DODGERS SUCK October 30th, 2007 at 1:45 am

The Dodgers have a good bullpen and several good young everyday players in Martin (C), Loney (1B), Kemp (RF), and Ethier (LF), but their starting pitching, overall hitting, and bench sucks. 2007 everyday players Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra, and Luis Gonzalez are hasbeens. Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre are so-sos on their way to being hasbeens.
All these guys are getting older, not better. Most will be worse. Kent led the team with 20 HR while Martin led the team with 87 RBI.

    Projected 2008 rotation:

    Penny/ Lowe (so-so)/ Schmidt (bust)/ Billingsley (???)/ TBD

    Projected 2008 starting eight:

    C-Martin*
    1B-Loney*
    2B-Kent re-signed?
    3B-Garciaparra
    SS-Furcal
    LF-Ethier*
    CF-Pierre
    RF-Kemp*

    *In his third M.L.B. season.

    Projected 2008 record: 72-90

Penny, Lowe, the bullpen, and at least half the kids with asterisks next to their name above will not be as good as 2007 hence the 8 more losses/ 8 less wins. The team will get more of the same from the hasbeens and near hasbeens. Who’s signing with a team who has one really good starter (Penny) and whose best all-around hitter is a catcher going into his third season?

I don’t see Torre being able to do anything with this team save collect two headache-filled paychecks.

  154. GoSox October 30th, 2007 at 1:50 am

Congrats on the scoop Peter — just heard you on ESPN.

  155. Catya October 30th, 2007 at 1:51 am

Brandon ur funny man! Good stuff.

  156. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine October 30th, 2007 at 1:54 am

God I can’t stand these muppet fans like Clueless Day. Just a real skid mark on our fan base.

  157. GoSox October 30th, 2007 at 1:55 am

“Torre might as well take a year off or retire, THE DODGERS SUCK”

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

First, a rotation of Penny, Lowe and a healthy Schmidt in the NL West is devastating.

Second, I wonder what third baseman who has an agent with ties to Los Angeles the Dodgers might be able to acquire this off-season?

If you consider that the Dodgers are now battling with the LAAA for the LA market, ARod might be worth $30mm/year to them…

  158. CGramazio October 30th, 2007 at 1:56 am

I think I’m going to have to start a west coast version of No Maas now that Torre’s headed to the Dodgers…I think I’ll call it…No Howe. What do you think?

  159. Catya October 30th, 2007 at 1:56 am

Peter, you go boy! ESPN they like you Peter.

  160. Clueless Day October 30th, 2007 at 1:56 am

I can’t stand people like you who think Joe Torre makes the yankees a postseason team. I can’t stand people who give Joe Torre credit for his 4 WS but he doesn’t get any blame for what has been in last few years. I been watching this team longer than u so kid you shouldn’t be talking about muppets you 96 run bandwangoner.

  161. Clueless Joe II October 30th, 2007 at 2:17 am

The Dodgers will finish 4th in the NL West next season:

    1. AZ
    2. SD
    3. COL
    4. LAD
    5. SF

Now that he is managing in the NL, Torre will have a lot more opportunities to make bone-headed decisions.

  162. Born in da Bronx October 30th, 2007 at 3:25 am

I wish both Joe’s well. The Yankees have had their share of good Joe’s. And we are lucky to have another. As for Mr. Torre go forth and prosper in LA if that is the job you take. Those that are clueless, just do not enjoy the game and I have been a Yankee fan for many decades now.

  163. B October 30th, 2007 at 7:06 am

With all the young talent in LA, a monkey could manage them to better than 82-80 next year. Torre will do just that and continue to be hailed as a brilliant manager. Funny stuff.

  164. B October 30th, 2007 at 7:12 am

Though unless Joe Torre wakes up thinking it’s 1996, it might be a bad idea to put him in charge of a team that desperately needs a manager that will USE it’s young talent. Little leaving Billingsley out of the rotation for most of the year was a complete joke.

  165. B October 30th, 2007 at 7:16 am

“I imagine it will be a looooonnnggg time before the Yanks deal with Bora$ again.”

I highly doubt that. He gets the best free agents and best draft eligible players in the game. There is no way around dealing with him.

  166. Mehdi hates Randy LEvine October 30th, 2007 at 10:14 am

Clueless I don’t care how long you have been watching the Yankees you are a muppet. The point is under his watch we won 4 world series which is more than any team including the Yankees could have hoped for. It’s too bad it hasn’t worked out since 2000 but the positives far out weigh the negatives you spoiled brat. It’s because of the putrid 80′s and early 90′s that I am so thankful for him. You muppet.

  167. hmmm October 30th, 2007 at 10:48 am

do you people who are saying posada might go to LA even follow baseball?

  168. saucy October 30th, 2007 at 12:41 pm

“I think I’m going to have to start a west coast version of No Maas now that Torre’s headed to the Dodgers…I think I’ll call it…No Howe. What do you think?”

best comment in this thread, by far…

oh, and good luck to joe in LA.

  169. Dr E October 30th, 2007 at 12:56 pm

I hope St. Joe or his agent didn’t discuss his availabilty to manage a team that already has a manager under contract.

  170. Yoggis October 30th, 2007 at 1:13 pm

The way Dodgers treated Little is not much better than Yankees in Torre Affair. Joe beaware. Good luck, Joe & Donnie (a tough job ahead), nevertheless.

  171. Dave October 30th, 2007 at 1:30 pm

What is “The Journal News”? Never heard of it, so to be honest, I’ll believe it when The NY Times or ESPN reports it.
