Statement from Brian Cashman

Peter Abraham
October
29

“I received a message from Scott Boras last night informing me that Alex Rodriguez formally opted out of the final three seasons of his contract. We always understood that it was his contractual right to do so.

We expressed our interest in keeping him in pinstripes, and requested the opportunity to convey those feelings to him directly with the Steinbrenner family in an open, face-to-face dialogue.

Alex was a key part of our success over the last four seasons, and I appreciate having the opportunity to work with him. I wish Alex, Cynthia and their growing family the best of luck in the future. I only wish we could have raised a championship trophy together during his time here, which was the ultimate goal we all shared.”

    So long Pay-Rod.

at least cashman handled it with class, unlike arod

For all the people bashing Jeter for not backing him up when the media was on him. It seems now that he knew that fraud was a phony and didnt want to have anything to do with him from the get go. Gotta give it to him for not falling for that fake act.

  6. JohnnyC

Jeter and A-Rod, the Yankees two best hitters, did not have any chemistry when it came to hitting. Losing A-Rod hurts, but it never worked in the lineup the way it should have…

This is an odd set of stats to back this thought up:

In their careers, Jeter hits 20 points higher against lefties than righties, A-Rod hits ten points higher against righties than lefties. Jeter hits 8 points higher during night games, A-Rod hits 24 points higher during day games. Jeter hits 362 in October, A-Rod hits 250 in October (cheap shot). Jeter was 9 for 16 against Schilling in 2007, A-Rod was 3 for 14 against Schilling in 2007. Jeter was 1 for 6 against Jon Garland, A-Rod was 4 for 8 against him.

  7. nate c.

JohnnyC – good stats, but I would think this isn’t such a bad thing. Guys are never really rolling at the same time. It is part of what I think made the lineup good. When one guy wasn’t hitting another was. Plus – Jeter doesn’t bat third right before a rod

  8. Rebecca--Nothing Beats Optimism

Cashman may have had that goal, I’m not sure A-Rod did.

When A-Rod played with Seattle, how many years did Seattle make the playoffs? Like 0, right?

When A-Rod left, the Mariners made the playoffs two years in a row.

Before A-Rod played for Texas, they were perennial AL-West winners.

After A-Rod joined them, they’re perennial basement dwellers and only now just beginning to show some life.

This means good things for the Yankees.

  9. Ian

This is why I love Brian Cashman. No wavering, totally in control of his domain. Just goes to show you who was in charge from 2001 to 2005 and 2005 to the present. I could not feel any more comfortable and confident in the direction of this team.

    Bring us Joe Crede next.

  10. Armand

point was raised by Michael Kay in an ESPN interview.. Say Arod does get offers of X amount of Money for Y years.. and approaches the Yankees and tells them that he’d take off $30 million to account for the Texas subsidy and the Yankees match the rest.. does this seem feasible? Would Boras allow such a deal to be in place?

  11. Dr. Acula

    Boras just lied, “we spoke”

    weasel.

  12. rico

Cashman’s statement shows some class, and no sign at all that the Yankees will be willing to talk to ARod now. Just the right tone. Let’s move on.

  13. Joe Monte

Bring in Beltre and give him a bottle of HGH and we’ll be fine at 3B.

  14. SJ44

Here’s the irony in all this. Joe Girardi is both the Yankees and Dodgers top options as manager.

That means Joe Torre is the Dodgers second choice.

Think about that for a moment. Joe Torre was insulted by the Yankees offer.

How would he feel about being second banana for the Dodgers job to Joe Girardi? Wouldn’t that be “insulting”?

  15. gargoyle

    Cashman=class.

  16. Christine

Boras’ announcing Alex opting out of his contract with the Yankees is like every high school movie where the captain of the football team breaks up with his girlfriend and announces to the other girls “hey ladies, I’m back on the market.”

  17. Chuck

“When A-Rod played with Seattle, how many years did Seattle make the playoffs? Like 0, right?”

Other than 1995 (ALDS & ALCS), 1997 (ALDS) and 2000 (ALDS & ALCS) that would be correct. Two of those series were against the Yankees… someone losing their memory?

*Totally possible and DON’T be surprised if the Yankees take the deal.*

To Alex, courtesy of The Beatles:

    Can’t buy me love, love
    Can’t buy me love

I’ll buy you a diamond ring my friend if it makes you feel alright

I’ll get you anything my friend if it makes you feel alright

‘Cause I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love

I’ll give you all I got to give if you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give but what I got I’ll give to you
I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love

Can’t buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can’t buy me love, no no no, no

Say you don’t need no diamond rings and I’ll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of thing that money just can’t buy

I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love

Can’t buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can’t buy me love, no no no, no

Say you don’t need no diamond rings and I’ll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things that money just can’t buy

I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love

    Can’t buy me love, love,
    (Can’t buy me) love

I hope opting out is worth years of Yankees fan’s hatred and getting adjusted with a new team only to opt out 3 or 4 years later. I won’t miss you.

  20. CaptainsCorner

Torre is the Dodgers 2nd choice and there 1st choice was someone that only managed one year. The funniest part is that Torre was “insulted” by the $5m offer(which would of been $6m by getting into the play offs) the Dodgers wont pay him anything close to what the Yanks would of. He made $7m last year and now he will make what $3m. Have fun sleeping in the dugout in Cali. Torre

  21. blondlobo

Way to go, Cashmoney. Even when Pay-Fraud is a jerk, Cashmoney still has the gumption to issue a statement like a man, instead of leaving a voicemail.

  22. EJ

    SJ44,

You just heard Michael Kay say the same thing about Torre to Buster Olney 10 minutes ago. You’re a jackass. Most people on this blog think Kay is as big a phony as ARod. Torre is gone – let it go.

  23. Casual

Don’t you wish you could get the statement thats actually in Cash’s head rather than the one he released? Probably sounds like the one I say

  24. Christine

S.o.S.27, you raise a valid point.

I admit when I heard we were getting Rodriguez in a trade I said we didn’t need him. At the time, it was fresh of the heels of Rodriguez bashing his BEST FRIEND to the media. Even though, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I remember his first at-bats and how he struggled to get a single. Everyone appeared to be booing him, but being the sucker that I am, I cheered for the underdog. I never booed him, but he just screwed me and plenty of HIS fans.

  25. migames

christine, i feel the same way, I never booed him. I gave up a ton of boos that i didnt use for him. Now i have to boo the subway, mailman and other stuff in my life

  26. Christine

    Casual,

I sure do. I bet it goes something like this:

    “Why you (expletive, expletive) . . .

  27. randy l

    and for the minority opinion.
i like scott boras. i also like it that cashman is making a statement instead of someone else because he’s a professional at what he does.
if you are going to deal with scott boras , you’d better be good. i’ve been down on cashman most of the year , but i think he matured during the year from his younger and cheaper phiosophy just like theo did when he sabataged the red sox in 2006 by not paying for abreau.
cashman is the one the yankees need running point for them right now. if hank the dunderhead is backing off and letting cashman be out in front all the better. i didn’t think hank had the intelligence to know that he didn’t have the intelligence required to run the yankees. just don’t let hank near posada or rivera or pettitte. i can imagine the opinion they have of him.

  28. Christine

Aw Migames, I don’t think any of us should waste another second on this loser. We should all just ignore him and focus on our new manager and the 2008 Yankees.

  29. Kill-Schill(ing)

The Yankees are NOT in Good Shape. That sounds like something Candide might say about the team he covers.

A-Rod’s departure leaves a yawning chasm in the Bronx: the Yankees have no cleanup hitter; they have no right-handed power bat; they have no third baseman—–the third baseman’s whose offensive production single-handely responsible kept them afloat long enough to enable them to contend for the playoffs.

Their five hitter, Matsui’s skills regressed last year. Their seventh hitter, Giambi, is a geriatic albatross. And Posada, their sixth hitter, even if he re-signs, turns 37 next season.

The Yankees have two— yes TWO—starting position players under 33—Melky and Cano. THAT’S IT.

Describing the Yankees as in “GOOD SHAPE” is a little like claiming the US is winning the war in Iraq.

  30. Dr. Acula

You guys are killing me. It like being in the right field bleachers :)

  31. G. Love

Why after reading that statement do I suddenly feel that the door is still open?

Watch this happen. Arod gets a 350 million dollar offer from team X, but at the last moment calls the Steinbrenners and Cashman and tells them he’ll take 30 million less to stay a Yankee thus giving the Yankees the Texas discount.

  32. Drive 4-5

What is the point of kicking Joe Torre at this point i time??? Geez, give it up!!!

On the other end of the spectrum you have Brian Cashman giving PayRod better treatment than he deserved. Cashman comes off as being even tempered and in control at a time the Yankees are in chaos.

  33. Dr. Acula

    Hey, no more hand-wringing, okay.

Let’s remember, this is NYC, not Boston.

  34. EY

Agree, Kill Schill, we are going to have lots of whole to fill this winter. While our pitchers got a lot younger (very good thing!), our bats got older and look more beat up than ever.

  35. Jimbo

    Hey Yankee Fans…
You OK w/letting Torre go? Some of you seem happy? OK.
You OK w/letting A-Rod and his 54 HRs and 156 RBIs go? OK.
You OK w/the Red Sox winning two World Series in sweeps? OK.

Join the REST OF THE PLANET!!!!

    You don’t win every year.
You don’t get what you want every year.
You don’t deserve to win every year.
    And NO ONE does!!!

You’ve won more than anybody else times 2, and you WHINE? You GRIPE? What NO BREAKFAST IN BED Today, Sire?

Listen, you take yer ticket and you take yer chances.

You should be down on your knees thankin’ God you’ve had things go so well for you for so long. But you can’t wait to crab at Torre because he “only” brought you Four Crowns in 12 years.

Try being a fan of any other team, that waits and prays for a few good players, a lucky break, and a ring once, maybe twice in our miserable lives.

You have players with class – but you don’t have any if all you can do is dump on A-Rod heading out the door.

Be pleased with yourself – YOU drove A-Rod out of town, along with those of you who kicked Torre in the tush as well.

May you have a good decade of missing the playoffs to atone for your hubris and arrogance. The bugs in Joba’s face were a message!

  36. EY

The troll’s message should be deleted.

  37. Dave from Westchester

and the reason why arod would accept $30 million less from the Yankees than Team X? When he has that in hand?

  38. randy l

    dr. acula-
there is a certain humour to all this.
for one thing, i am grateful to scott boras and arod for giving me something to think about instead of the red sox getting their second world series in four years.
today is so over the top with bad news, at some point you have to laugh about it.

  39. S.o.S.27

What does Sheffield,Johnson and Fraud have in commin? They all are finally out of the club house. We can finally have a good atmosphere without all those EGOS in the room.

2008 will finally once again be known as the Yankees.
    NOT SHEFFS YANKEES
    NOT UNITS YANKEES
    NOT FRAUDS YANKEES
But the New York Yankees. More unity, more fight(knowing they cant rely on just one person carrying the team 90isk), everyone being equal and less media distractions.

Look for a better year in spite of losing that headcase.

  40. Strummerson

Jimbo is right. All Yankee fans should clearly root for our team to lose for the next 50 years in the name of fair play. How dare we want our team to try to win every year? Let’s applaud failure and call ourselves humble and generous.

  41. Yankeex777

Wow it really seems like This is Cashman saying goodbye forever. This is good, Yanks would look like idiots if they struck up talks with him. Its over goodbye Stray-Rod, Yanks will be better without him..

  42. VOIII

    EJ,
Cant be the same EJ from Pending Pinstripes Blog can it?

    KILL SCHILL,
So I guess you are a glass is 1/2 empty kinda guy huh?

  43. Jimbo

Oh yeah, one more thing…A-Rod left the Yanks to chase $$$$.

Why did Jason Giambi leave the Oakland A’s?
Why did Mike Mussina leave the Baltimore Orioles?
Why did Chuck Knoblauch leave the Minnesota Twins?
Why did Johnny Damon leave the Boston Red Sox?
Why did Roger Clemens come out of retirement (again)?

These and many more Yankees broke their fans’ hearts when they went for the dough-re-mi in the Bronx. Do you think Sox fans liked seeing Clemens or Wade Boggs get rings in Yankee pinstripes? How bout Met fans who saw underachieving Do Gooden and Darryl Strawberry resurface in pinstripes to grab their second rings, which they should’ve stayed sober and gotten as Mets in the late 80s.

Your team has sucked up talent from everybody else using the almighty dollar. And NOW YOU’RE calling Alex Rodriguex “Pay-Rod” as if he was some sleaze? He is merely the personification of what the franchise has engendered.

You treated Bernie Williams badly, then Joe Torre.

    Foo on you.

  44. JohnnyC

Nate C – I see your point in theory. But tell that to Manny and Ortiz…

  45. S.o.S.27

Jimbo makes sense,we should kick a goat out of our stadium, have a curse put on us, so that we dont smell a championship for eternity. Go back to your windy city blog and take fraud with you.

  46. Yankeex777

Jimbo you dont know what you are talkin bout

  47. Chuck

Yankees are in fine shape. They have holes to fill but they have time to do that. We could use a true ace like Santana, but we will get by without one. A-Rod’s departure takes away some production numbers but it will also alleviate some of the dugout tension. Whether the Yankees pick up Lowell or find another temporary solution at third base, the world will not end…

But I assume ticket prices will go down next year since we don’t have to pay the A-Rod premium…

  48. Dr. Acula

Boras asked Kay, “Michael, which is heavier, a pound of steel or a pound of feathers?”

And Kay replied, “Oh, that’s easy, a pound of steel, of course!”

    LOL!

  49. Boston Dave

Steinbrenner Family – PLEASE SIGN CASHMAN to a long term deal. Please…..

  50. Chuck

Jimbo is correct — although it makes no sense that the way this was handled by Boras is in the best interest of his client… there must be an under the table out there somewhere… only time will tell.

  51. Strummerson

    Foo on us indeed!!!

I think the Yanks need to reduce payroll to $35 million. Why should the Steinbrenners put the money on the field when it could stay in their pockets or their horse ranches?

Foo on us for wanting to succeed.

Foo on us for loving our team and the city it represents.

Foo on us for not using poetic phrases that start with “Foo” more often.

  52. stuart

kill shilling let’s use your logic.. the sux have how many starters under 30????2b, 1b, and CF.. there catcher is 37, dh 32 +, LF 34, rf 31 and injury prone, ss is in his 30’s etc.

you can find bad in anything if you look close enough..

NO I am wrong they have 2 ROOKIE pitchers from Boston, oops one is 32 and the other 28 with over 1400 innings on his arm……

  53. 56Bomber

What I still don’t understand about Arod opting out is why did he not wait until 10 days after the World Series if his rationale was that he needed more information regarding the Yankee’s plan to bring back the other FAs and their overall organizational direction. He also turned down the offer of a direct discussion with the Steinbrenners that would have clearly provided him with insight as to what their plans were. Obviously his stated rationale is a smokescreen but to what end? Was it all about grabbing the limelight from the Red Sox while the World Series was still going on? If so, what would he gain from that? I think this was a huge miscalculation and I don’t understand what they felt they would gain by not waiting.

  54. Boston Dave

Jimbo, The Red Sox shunned Clemens and then the Yankees traded for him. The Sox refused to offer Damon a real contract. The other guys had no intention of returning to their original team or were traded. The Yankee fans are upset with how it seems Arod/Boras are handling this. If Arod manned up and was honest he might get a little more respect. Using the “uncertainty of Posada, Rivera” etc line and the timing is what puts it over the top. You are a complete moron yankee-hater that will find a way to criticize the yankees no matter what happens.

  55. stuart

I meant Japan on the rookie pitchers.. No sorry SHilling Elsbury has 70 Ab’s in the bigs he is a all star….

you distort everything that you look at…the yanks if they want will have 4 under 30 starters.. how about 1b(duncan or someone else), they have plenty of $ and 3b….

  56. EY

This Jimbo troll needs to be banned. Losing must’ve gotten to his senses. Everyone knows that the basic goal of competitive sports is to win every game and every year.

When you become complacent and start thinking “it’s ok to lose” “this is not our year,” then you will actually lose. Losing is a self-fulfilling prophecy – now go back rooting for whatever loser team you came from.

  57. We Miss Paulie

Jimbo, we’re all accept that athletes chase money. Agreed.

The thing we all dislike about Arod disingenuous, sleazy way he did it. I think we’d be o.k. if he told Cashman in person and his teammeates and released a statement about his tenure in NY. A straight shooter.

Instead he had his agent leave a voicemail on a Sunday, and thats the last anyone has heard of him.

Not sure where you’re from, but New Yorkers hate people who sneak out the back door.

  58. Pauly One

Listening to the Peter Gammons interview…wow he was annoyed by yesterday’s Arod announcement.

  59. Andrea

I personally hate that he was all “I love New York, my other teams feel weird to me” and now he’s gone. I think we, as fans, kind of feel like he cheated on us. He was like “no, I lvoe you baby, I love you. You’re the only one for me.” Meanwhile he was going to clubs every night, shopping around.

  60. Go NYR

A-Rod is not in it to win. He is in it for money. I guess he has different goals from the team which means he does not fit in well.

Jimbo- I think we have the right to say whatever we want about A-Rod. He did not even hear our offer for a contract extension. The guy is a phony. He says its all about winning and he loves New York, he loves the fans, he loves the playing here, but if that were true, why did he not even meet with Yankees management. The guy is a fraud. He is not a winner like Jeter or Rivera. All he did for our team was cause tension. He can go to Boston or the Mets. I dont care, they can have him. He is a loser and all he cares about is money. He is nothing more than a greedy, arrogant, egomaniac. Thank god he is gone. Its one less headache for us and one more step in the right direction. Three reasons we arigare in good shape:
    Joba
    Hughes
    IPK

  61. Phil

yeah, Gammons was doing something else with his writing hand last night until that pesky ARod made his announcement. J/K it was completely inappropriate for Team ARod to do it during a World Series game.

  62. nate c.

johnny c – they bat next to each other though.
i think the whole dynamic of this lineup is going to be completely different. we may even get a chance to see if giambi can be slightly productive

  63. S.o.S.27

The irony in all this is that he took so much heat from fans for signing that 250 million deal. He said he didnt think it was fair and that he just wanted to fit in. Now the heat is about to double with the new contract plus the way he crawled out of here. He better put some money asside for a few shrink visits weekly.

  65. Chicago Dave

Jimbo is a class-A fool…Schilling, Beckett, Dice K, Okajima, Lowell, Drew, Lugo, Crisp, Gagne…All that homegrown, low-priced talent on the Red Sox…Yes, it’s truly admirable and nothing like the Yankees! HA!!! I’m about to seriously injure myself I’m laughing so hard…

Hey Jimbo, how many writers have to pen articles about how the Red Sox are the new “evil empire” for it to sink into that thick skull of yours? Enjoy the championship all you want, but it’s nothing like ‘04. Your team isn’t a bunch of lovable, over-achieving underdogs anymore. They have all been bought and paid for at a king’s ransom.

  66. Jeter's future wife

we are fine? who said anything about Giambi and Matsui being in the lineup? If we can’t trade them (which I doubt we could), why would you think Girardi would put them in the lineup over a Minky or Duncan and maybe put Duncan out in left field and let Damon DH. Things will be different, no MERCY spots in the lineup anymore! If we have to ride out their contract, then so be it, but Girardi will put the players on the field that give him the best chance to win. Really, look at the Red Sox, their young “nobodies” (Pedroia, Dice K, Ellsbury) came up nicely for them, so who’s to say that our rookies won’t do that when brought along nicely?

  67. Dr. Acula

    Andrea is right.

The biggest loser here is the Scores Gentleman’s club on 60th and 2nd.

The bottom line just took a big hit (no pun intended) ;)

  68. Joey Bagadonuts

We’re in good hands with Cash

” I only wish we could have raised a championship trophy together during his time here….”

Translation: “I only wish he would have hit worth a damn in October”

Any chance Mike Lowell gets to market?

Thanks for the updates Pete. The avalanche of Yankee news is distracting Pete from what he’s really thinking about -

    Good v Ev…I mean Colts v Pats, Sunday Nov 4 4:15 pm

  69. We Miss Paulie

Man, after listening to Gammons, its really does sound like Boras’ “advice” to Alex is going to backfire on him.

  70. randy l

“What I still don’t understand about Arod opting out is why did he not wait until 10 days after the World Series if his rationale was that he needed more information regarding the Yankee’s plan to bring back the other FAs and their overall organizational direction.”
maybe because i didn’t like the ultimatum opt out and goodbye, and because i see the yankees as being in disarray, it makes sense to me that boras had arod opt out now. boras did say that he didn’t think the yankees could make all the decisions necessary with player signings in the ten days for arod to know what theyankees would look like. so why wait the ten days?
i’ve said it since spring that there would not be enough time in the day to deal with everything that’s on the table. posada and rivera should have been extended long ago so there would have been time for other things. it was too much to put in one window of time. poor strategic planning on the yankees part.

  71. Ben

Guys how about Andy Phillips? He really sparked this season!

  72. Doreen

    Andrea -

That’s kind of how I’m feeling. And then you feel so stupid that you believed the guy.

And I know that calmer people here are saying the Yankees will be fine, but I really am not sure. No 3rd baseman, no cleanup hitter, no right-handed power hitter. No free agent prospects to fill the void, so the money the Yankees save on ARod is worthless until next year. The prospect of having to trade at least one of the young pitching phenoms and Melky Cabrera and/or Wang. And the trade is not really necessarily to IMPROVE the team, but to help it survive. Change is one thing. I can accept change. I can accept moving on to a new manager. I can accept players moving on. But this one move by this one player is huge. Not only that, but there still has not been a resolution of the Mo and Posada and Pettitte issues.

And now hearing rumors that Pettitte will follow Torre to LA – not that I necessarily believe it, because, well, the Dodgers would actually have to make Pettitte an offer, but it’s just more aggravation. Gradual change is fine; the change that comes because of cataclysmic events is not so easy to adust to. And the possibility of losing a 3rd baseman, a catcher and your closer is cataclysmic.

I do not confuse this with my real life, but in my “fan” life, it is devastating.

ARod cannot opt out formally until the period beginning AFTER the end of the World Series. This explains the timing of the announcement–it was just a statement of intention, before the end of the World Series, at the last possible moment where it does not commit him to any decision. Typical MO of Boras.

They can always come back to the Yankees for an extension in the next 9 days, while pretending to field offers and let the speculation run rampant.

Nobody in their right mind is going to offer Alex anything for 10 days unless they see the actual paper with the opt out decision written on it and signed by ARod–that is tampering, and would be dealt with severely.

This is how Boras one-upped Cashman in this high stakes negotiation. The fallout has been predictable so far–I am sure Boras told ARod all of this was going to happen. This is not over yet, by any means. This remains a negotiation about the extension, until the final papers are filed. It is not Boras MO to show your cards before the last minute.

The issue is, will the fans forgive ARod? If this is the real story behind all of this, that’s a great question.

There is no other explanation for the actions of the last 24 hours. Boras is not that stupid. Neither is ARod.

If there is another explanation, let me know–since it is major stupidity on their part for it to be anything else.

  74. Go NYR

You dont need a great regular season player like A-Rod to win a World Series. You need strong pitching and timely hitting. 2 things that A-Rod never offered.

  75. Andrea

Doreen: let’s start a support group. We’ll get over the hurt, and Cashman will find a 3rd baseman style Joba type for us all to love. he’ll bat .1000 in his first 10 games or so before getting his first out.

  76. Go NYR

I would see what Robbie Cano can do from the four hole.

  77. Doreen

    Go NYR –

But first you have to get there. And you need regular season players like ARod to get you there. Or several players that add up to an ARod. And right now, I don’t believe the Yankees have that. And right now, they don’t have strong pitching or timely hitting. Don’t misunderstand — I am very excited about the young pitching coming up, but I am not foolish enough to assume that they will be all-stars next season. I expect growing pains and adjustment periods for some or all of them for some or all of the season.

    Peter,
Finally, the Yankees are getting rid of GS’s fantasy team. Heck, I hated rooting for A-Rod. Please take Damon too.
You cannot replace the numbers at 3rd but remember there was no production at 1st this year. Finding a better offensive fit at that corner should be easier. I believe Pena is out there but I don’t trust the numbers. I hear Nick is recovered and they have the fat guy who hit .330 at 1st. so he is available.

“Steinbrenner Family – PLEASE SIGN CASHMAN to a long term deal. Please…..”
i would not be opposed to that.he needs three years at least so he can make decisions without thinking of losing his job. it would also give credence to those who say he still has his clout. signing an extension would be a sure way for the steinbrenner family to back him up. let’s see if they do it. it would be the smart move to make.

  80. We Miss Paulie

Pittsburgh – its pretty clear to me that Boras’ scheme backfired. There is no way now that Arod would ever be welcomed back to NYC. Ever.

I’m disappointed that Tony Pena has not issue a statement :-(

Yes! A support group for jilted fans. And a new “crush!” The perfect medicine. :)

    well said doreen-
one option with girardi being the manager is to change the yankees to a team that manufactures runs and excels in situational hitting. build the team aroung pitching, defense, and situational hitting- not necessarily small ball.
it could be done. lowell would work at third in this scenario although he’s not going to be cheap.

Boras asked Kay, “Michael, which is heavier, a pound of steel or a pound of feathers?

And Kay replied, “Oh, that’s easy, a pound of steel, of course!

    LOL!

    Shirley you can’t be serious.!!

Oh, Dr. Acula, you keep me in stitches. :-)

    Got any more?

Kay: “well, it would depend on which state they’re from”

I wanted A-Rod to stay and sign an extension of max 30M per for 5 years. But I honestly don´t really care he´s gone. I hope he signs with one of the best 15 teams so we get 2 nice picks for him. I kinda hope he´ll sign with the Red Sox, having him come to Yankee Stadium should be SWEET!

At least the Yankees handled the situation with class, unlike A-Rod. And Boras shouldn´t be blamed for being the best agent (by far) in the business.

  90. Amandla

Drive 4-5, I agree. I don’t understand the Torre bashing either. Why does someone always have to be dragged down with him (Jeter/Torre). If A-Rod did half of what Torre did for the Yankees, we’d be thanking him for 2 WS instead of trying to Oust his stank.

You’ve been there too I see. God bless them.

Last night, PayRod handed away the last shreds of adoration or appreciation any fans may have had left for him (other than some little kids who won’t understand all this.) To sacrifice that and your self-respect for the almighty $$ is absolutely SICKENING. He just filled Bonds’ spot as ‘persona non grata’ in the baseball world. I hope he too never wins anything more than his lame MVP awards — as he knows nothing of the word or concept of “team.”

GOOD RIDDANCE you PHONY, MONEY GRUBBING, CHOKING EXCUSE for a BALL PLAYER. His time here has been nothing but a distraction since Day 1 and frankly I am relieved to be rid of him.

One last thought: he probably thought it was funny or cool to try to upstage the RedSox winning. . .if that isn’t warped, I don’t know what is.

  95. Chris

    Ban Jimbo the troll!

  96. Sherri

I like Cashman more and more all the time. Way to go!! Maybe with Alex leaving, Jeter will get his full mojo back. I’m so disappointed in A-Rod, and there’s a still a small part of me that hopes that somehow he’s just brainwashed by Bora$$ and that he’s really not that shallow, but sadly, I’m afraid he is. We don’t want anyone here who doesn’t want to be here…agreed.

  97. Ducky Bent

Does anybody think if A-Rod approaches the Yanks and said he’ll give them a discount – say the 21 mil owed them by Texas – that Cashman and Hank will listen? Or would that just be self-destructive and look bad for the Yanks?

My personal opinion is that if A-Rod/Boras state that A-Rod wants to remain a Yankee and that he’ll offer them a discount, that the Yanks will save face.

This all might have been public posturing of egos on both ends – - The Yankes PUBLICLY saying they won’t talk to A-Rod if he opts out and Boras taking them up on the challenge and publicly opting out.

Either that or A-Rod already has a deal in place with another club.
